Little work has been done on the roosting behaviour of Corvidae, particularly the influence of light-intensity on its timing. This paper describes the effects of light-intensity on the roosting times of rooks (Corvus frugilegus) from a large roost during winter. Light intensity was measured and its influence on the departure of birds from the feeding grounds, arrival at the roost, entry into the roost and morning departure was found to be significant. Departure from feeding areas (and arrival at the roost) was earlier at lower light-intensities and later at higher light-intensities. Control of responsiveness to light-intensity by circadian rhythm for rooks from different feeding grounds was discussed.  相似文献

Jackdaws were conditioned to avoid or escape broadcast jackdaw distress calls. The calls were preceded by 10 s of stimulus light which accompanied the broadcast calls for 4 min. Following this, there was a 2-min time-out period without light or sound, after which the stimulus light was illuminated once again. A response (key peck) during the light or light plus sound periods terminated these. Extinction was accomplished with the stimulus light only. Median latencies of response were compared when calls were broadcast using high and low fidelity equipment. Median latencies to the HF calls were significantly shorter than those to LF calls. A comparison was also made between HF calls and discrete 1 kHz tone segments. The median latencies for the tone segments were longer than those for HF calls. HF jackdaw calls were compared with high pass calls (containing only frequencies above 5 kHz) and with HF herring gull distress calls. In both cases, the median response latencies were similar to those for HF jackdaw calls.  相似文献

As ravens have pronounced learning capabilities, especially in the vocal domain, cultural transmission might be a relevant factor affecting the composition of their vocal repertoires. We investigated how important cultural transmission is in establishing a raven's vocal repertoire and whether there are different pathways of transmission. We studied individually known free-ranging breeding pairs whose vocalizations were recorded during interactions with a caged pair. The mean repertoire size of these vocalizations was 12 call types per individual (from 79 types recorded from 74 individuals), with no difference between the sexes. In 81% of individuals the repertoire was composed entirely of calls also used by other individuals. Analysis of the distribution of call types among individuals regarding sex, partnership and neighbourhood and aspects of the geographical distribution of calls showed that the main pathway of cultural transmission was within the sexes. In addition, transmission occurred between pair partners, as well as between neighbouring and more distant pairs. About 40% of the calls in a raven's repertoire were transmitted within a sex and 10% between pair partners. Any two given birds in the population shared on average 20% (0-77%) of their calls. Molecular cloning, molecular phylogeny, gene structure and expression analyses of growth hormone (GH) were performed in a passerine bird, the jungle crow (Corvus macrorhynchos). Unexpectedly, duplicated GH cDNA and genes were identified and designated as GH1A and GH1B. In silico analyses identified the zebra finch orthologs. Both GH genes encode 217 amino acid residues and consist of five exons and four introns, spanning 5.2 kbp in GH1A and 4.2 kbp in GH1B. Predicted GH proteins of the jungle crow and zebra finch contain four conserved cysteine residues, suggesting duplicated GH genes are functional. Molecular phylogenetic analysis revealed that duplication of GH genes occur after divergence of the passerine lineage from the other avian orders as has been suggested from partial genomic DNA sequences of passerine GH genes. RT-PCR analyses confirmed expression of GH1A and GH1B in the pituitary gland. In addition, GH1A gene is expressed in all the tissues examined. However, expression of GH1B is confined to several brain areas and blood cells. These results indicate that the regulatory mechanisms of duplicated GH genes are different and that duplicated GH genes exert both endocrine and autocrine/paracrine functions.  相似文献

One foraging strategy that scavengers can employ to discover unpredictable food sources is to associate directly with predators who inadvertently provide food. The common raven, a well known feeding generalist, is also a prominent scavenger of wolves' kills and is found to be in close association with this predator. We tested the hypothesis that ravens preferentially associate with wolves in winter as a kleptoparasitic foraging strategy. The presence, absence and behaviour of ravens was documented during winter observations of wolves, coyotes, Canis latrans, and elk, Cervus elaphus, as well as the landscape in the absence of these three species. Ravens were found to be in close association with wolves when they were travelling, resting and hunting prey. In comparison, ravens showed no significant association with coyotes, elk or areas on the landscape in the absence of wolves. We also compared ravens' discovery success of wolf-killed and nonwolf-killed carcasses and their behavioural response upon discovery. Ravens found all wolf kills almost immediately and remained at the carcass to feed alongside wolves after the death of the prey. In contrast, ravens were less successful discovering experimentally placed carcasses in the same study region, and did not land or feed despite the availability of fresh, exposed meat. Our results show that ravens' association with wolves is not just an incidental and proximate by-product of the presence of fresh meat. Instead, we show that ravens preferentially associate with wolves in both the presence and absence of food, resulting in the discovery of carcasses and suppression of ravens' innate fear of novel food sources. Through this mode of social foraging, ravens may experience increased foraging efficiency in the use of an otherwise spatially and temporally unpredictable food source.Copyright 2002 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour. The vocalizations of the bush dog (Speothos venaticus), crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous), and maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) were studied in a captive setting. The three species' repertoires were similar and included whines, long-distance calls, and growls. The whines and growls varied in amplitude, duration, and repetition rate; these variations and the frequencies of occurrence probably were influenced by both social organization and habitat characteristics. The bush dog, which lives in family groups and inhabits rain forests, had an elaborate whine-scream continuum that at close distances conveyed a wide range of moods. On the other hand, the maned wolf, which is solitary and frequents open pampas, used amplitude variations of the growl to signal hostile intentions over short, medium, and long distances.The long-distance vocalizations of the three species were the least variable in structure; the bush dog and crab-eating fox used the call to promote contact with separated pairmates or family members. Based on recordings during development, these two calls appeared to arise from the repetitive whine, a variant of the basic whine syllable. The maned wolf also had a contact-promoting howl, apparently an extended whine of high amplitude, but it was rarely recorded during the present study. More prominent was the maned wolf roar-bark, which functioned to space individuals over large distances, and appeared to be a growl of high amplitude.  相似文献

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that causes progressive muscular weakness. Fused in Sarcoma (FUS) that has been identified in familial ALS is an RNA binding protein that is normally localized in the nucleus. However, its function in vivo is not fully understood. Drosophila has Cabeza (Caz) as a FUS homologue and specific knockdown of Caz in the eye imaginal disc and pupal retina using a GMR-GAL4 driver was here found to induce an abnormal morphology of the adult compound eyes, a rough eye phenotype. This was partially suppressed by expression of the apoptosis inhibitor P35. Knockdown of Caz exerted no apparent effect on differentiation of photoreceptor cells. However, immunostaining with an antibody to Cut that marks cone cells revealed fusion of these and ommatidia of pupal retinae. These results indicate that Caz knockdown induces apoptosis and also inhibits differentiation of cone cells, resulting in abnormal eye morphology in adults. Mutation in EGFR pathway-related genes, such as rhomboid-1, rhomboid-3 and mirror suppressed the rough eye phenotype induced by Caz knockdown. Moreover, the rhomboid-1 mutation rescued the fusion of cone cells and ommatidia observed in Caz knockdown flies. The results suggest that Caz negatively regulates the EGFR signaling pathway required for determination of cone cell fate in Drosophila.  相似文献

O-Polysaccharides were released by mild acid degradation of lipopolysaccharides of Providencia alcalifaciens O35 and Proteus vulgaris O76 and were studied by 1D and 2D 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies, including HMBC and NOESY (ROESY) experiments. Both polysaccharides were found to contain N-(1-carboxyethyl)alanine (alanopine) that is N-linked to 4-amino-4,6-dideoxyglucose. Analysis of published data [Vinogradov, E.; Perry, M. B. Eur. J. Biochem.2000, 267, 2439-2446] shows that alanopine is present also on the same sugar in the lipopolysaccharide core of Proteus mirabilis O6 and O57.  相似文献

A new species, Huernia humpatana Bruyns (Apocynaceae–Ceropegieae), closely related to H. similis N.E.Br., is described from the Chela Mountains of Huila Province in southern Angola. The two species are distinguished by the 5-angled and erect stems with more prominent tubercles up to 6 mm long joined into clear angles and separated by V-shaped grooves in H. humpatana as opposed to very obtusely 4-angled stems with tubercles only 2 mm long and only indistinct grooves between the angles in H. similis. Furthermore, in H. similis the nodding corolla is ± 9 mm in diameter with sepals ± 2 mm long, while in H. humpatana the horizontally facing corolla is 18–20 mm in diameter with sepals 4–6 mm long.  相似文献

Constructed and estuarine wetlands, influenced by wastewater treatment plants, were investigated, with respect to microbial activity in terms of functional genes. The density and abundance of three denitrifying genes coding for nitrate (narG), nitrite (nirS), and nitrous oxide (nosZ) reductases, in sediment soil samples from wastewater effluent-fed and estuarine wetlands, were quantified using the SYBR green-based real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). To assess seasonal effects (i.e., winter (average temperature ∼2 °C) versus spring (average temperature ∼20 °C)), the densities of denitrifying genes, with respect to the abundance of functional genes, for the two different wetlands were determined. The three functional genes for all the sampling sites ranged from 1.0 × 106 to 1.0 × 109 copies/g of soil. Without considering seasonal variation, the nitrite-reducing functional genes were dominant over the other two genes in the effluent-fed wetland samples. However, nitrate and nitrite-reducing functional genes were dominant in relatively cold and warm seasons, respectively, in the estuarine wetland samples. Even though robust patterns and conclusions could not be obtained from the limited investigations, patterns with certain trends and needs for potential future research directions were obtained.  相似文献

A new natural product, 2(S),3(S)-3-hydroxy-4-methyleneglutamic acid (G3) has been isolated from seeds of Gleditsia caspica. The structure has been established by chemical and spectroscopic methods. Catalytic reduction of G3 yields 2(S),4(S)-4-methylglutamic acid and a new amino acid, 2(S),3(S),4(S)-3-hydroxy-4-methylglutamic acid. Ozonolysis of G3 followed by oxidation gives 2(S),3(R)-3-hydroxyaspartic acid. The S- (or l-) configurations at C2 in G3 and in 2(S),3(S),4(S)-3-hydroxy-4-methyglutamic acid and the S-configurations at C3 for G3 and 2(S),3(S),4(S)-3-hydroxy-4-methylglutamic acid and at C4 for 2(S),3(S),4(S)-3-hydroxy-4-methylglutamic acid are inferred from the configurations at C2 in 2(S),4(S)-4-methylglutamic acid and at C2 and C3 in 2(S),3(R)-3-hydroxyaspartic acid. The seeds also contain appreciable quantities of 2(S),3(S),4(R)-3-hydroxy-4-methylglutami c acid (G1) and 2(S),4(R)-4-methylglutamic acid.  相似文献

The DD-136 strain of Neoaplectana carpocapsae adversely affected the development of immature stages of Apanteles militaris, a gregarious internal parasitoid of the armyworm, Pseudaletia unipuncta. The adverse effect of the nematode-bacterium complex was indirect, i.e., the infection by the nematode killed the host before A. militaris could complete its development. However, if armyworms containing 10- or 11-day-old A. militaris were exposed to dauer juveniles in Petri dishes, 48.1 and 94.4%, respectively, produced normal cocoons. If hosts containing 9- or 10-day-old A. militaris were fed dauer juveniles, 42.6 and 73.4% of the armyworms, respectively, produced A. militaris which formed normal cocoons. Cocoon-spinning A. militaris larvae were infected by the nematode. After cocoon formation was completed, the dauer juveniles could not penetrate the cocoon and infect the pupa. However, pupae in cocoons which had been deliberately cut open at one end became infected. A. militaris adults were infected when exposed to dauer juveniles in Petri dishes. After 3 days of exposure to dauer juveniles, 25.0, 44.2, and 7.0% of the adults in three trials were alive, whereas 100, 100, and 96.7% of the control adults were alive. Examination of dead adults in the nematode treatment showed that 67.6% contained nematodes. N. carpocapsae developed and reproduced in unparasitized armyworms, in armyworms containing 9-day-old A. militaris, and in those from which A. militaris had emerged. Production of dauer juveniles was significantly higher in unparasitized armyworms and in armyworms containing 9-day-old A. militaris than in those from which A. militaris had emerged.  相似文献

Feeding periodicity, selection efficiency and food consumption of Liza dumerili (Steindachner, 1869) and L. richardsoni (Smith, 1846) were determined. The effects of particle size and nature of ingested food on aspects of the morphology of the alimentary canal of L. dumerili, L. richardsoni, Mugil cephalu (Linnaeus, 1958) and Liza tricuspidens (Smith, 1935) are discused. It was found that the dominant mullet species in the Swartkops estuary (South Africa) not only exhibit different feeding periodicities (L. dumerili and L. richardsoni but that selected material in all the species differs in chemical as well as physical properties. Alimentary canals of each species are morphologically well adapted for selection, ingestion and digestion of its preferredi food items. These factors reduce interspecific competition among the different mullet species.  相似文献
