Due to increased field occurrence of Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) on various crops including soybean, persimmon and apple in recent years in Korea, demand for insecticide applications to control the stink bug has increased. Acute toxicity of eight pesticides on Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), a major egg parasitoid of R. pedestris, was compared in the laboratory. Fenitrothion, spinosad, cyfluthrin, etofenprox and carbosulfan caused 100% mortality of O. nezarae within 24 hours by topical application or exposure to residue. Fenitrothion was also highly toxic to the parasitoid when ingested orally. In a previous study, release of refrigerated inviable eggs of R. pedestris was found to increase field parasitism; therefore, we evaluated the sublethal effect of fenitrothion when O. nezarae parasitised refrigerated or unrefrigerated host eggs. Although parasitism rates on both kinds of eggs significantly decreased when O. nezarae were provided with host eggs sprayed with fenitrothion, no difference in parasitism rate, adult emergence, sex ratio, development time and longevity of O. nezarae was found between the refrigerated or unrefrigerated host eggs when the insecticide was treated either before or after oviposition. There was no significant sublethal effect when parasitised host eggs were treated with the insecticide. From these results, all the insecticides tested showed high, acute toxicity against O. nezarae with relatively lower sublethal effects. Refrigeration of host eggs did not affect the susceptibility of O. nezarae to insecticides.  相似文献

Storing host eggs at low temperatures has been used to mass rear parasitoids of stink bugs, including Riptortus pedestris Fabricius (Hemiptera: Alydidae), a major soybean pest in Korea and Japan. However, no information on the effect of cold storage on parasitization by Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), one of the major parasitoids of R. pedestris, has been published. In this study, we examined biological attributes, including parasitism rate, development time, sex ratio, adult size, and longevity, of O. nezarae when the adult parasitoids were provided with host eggs refrigerated for 0, 15, 30, 60, and 120 days at 2.0 °C. None of the attributes of the first or second generation of O. nezarae was negatively affected by host egg refrigeration up to 30 days. In addition, O. nezarae could parasitize refrigerated host eggs successfully for the first four days of post-refrigeration period when they were kept at 26.3 °C and 78.7% RH conditions. Therefore, refrigeration of R. pedestris eggs can be a good method to mass rear O. nezarae.  相似文献

We conducted field experiments to examine flight orientation behavior of Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii, an egg parasitoid of soybean feeding bugs, using sticky traps with synthetic aggregation pheromones of the host, Riptortus clavatus (Thunberg). Experiments were conducted in plots either containing a soybean field or not containing one. When the traps were suspended at heights of 0.5, 1.5 and 3.0 m above a soybean field in Kobe, O. nezarae females were most frequently caught in the 0.5 m traps. In an open field on the same campus where the vegetation was predominantly tall goldenrod, females were more frequently trapped at 1.5 or 3.0 m. In a soybean field in Kumamoto, females were most frequently trapped in the 0.8 m traps, compared to traps placed at 2.0, 4.0 and 6.0 m. In an oat field in the same area, females were trapped most frequently at heights of 0.8 and 2.0 m. Unlike females, only a small number of males were trapped in the fields in both areas. The result that O. nezarae females were caught in traps at higher positions in non‐host habitats than in soybean fields probably reflects differences in host searching behavior in or movement between the habitats. In host habitats, females mainly walk on the plants or fly within the plant canopy to search for hosts. In non‐host habitats, females may not intensively search for hosts within the plants, and directly respond to host pheromones in the traps at heights equal to or a little higher than the plant canopy.  相似文献

Ooencyrtus pityocampae (Mercet) is a polyphagous egg parasitoid, known mainly as an egg parasitoid of the Pine Processionary Caterpillar,Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Denis &; Schiffermüller), a pest of pines in Southern Europe and in the Mediterranean region. Rearing on artificial medium was recently undertaken, and after a large screening of both materials and techniques available for this aim, a PVC film and a medium devoid of insect material were found as suitable for the complete development ofO. pityocampae. The artificial eggs allowed the parasitoid to oviposit and to develop up to the adult stage. Five adults (2 males and 3 females) were obtained. Development was slower than that observed in natural hosts. Two out of three females laid viable eggs in both natural and artificial eggs.  相似文献

In a previous study, we found that soybean fields could be supplemented with refrigerated eggs of Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) to enhance parasitism. As a part of a study to evaluate the effect of host egg refrigeration on parasitism, host acceptance behavior and interspecific larval competition between Gryon japonicum (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) and Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) were studied in multiparasitized unrefrigerated and refrigerated eggs. O. nezarae showed complete host acceptance behavior when offered refrigerated host eggs that were preparasitized by G. japonicum. Adult emergence rate of O. nezarae was 43 and 74% when the interval between the first and second oviposition was 0 and 4 days, respectively, and was not different between refrigerated and unrefrigerated eggs. Refrigeration did not change host acceptance behavior of G. japonicum, but adult emergence declined from 80% in unrefrigerated eggs to 37% in refrigerated eggs that were pre-parasitized by O. nezarae on the same day. No negative effects of refrigeration on sex ratio, adult longevity, and adult size of the both parasitoids were found. Generally host egg refrigeration did not negatively affect host acceptance behavior of the both parasitoids on preparasitized eggs or larval competition between the two parasitoids in multiparasitized host eggs with exceptions in the development time and emergence rate of G. japonicum. Therefore, host egg refrigeration may not interrupt interactions between the parasitoid populations in the field.  相似文献

The encyrtid Ooencyrtus kuvanae is a solitary parasitoid of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar L. (Lepidoptera-Lymantridae) that is used in biological control programmes and whose mass rearing is influenced by superparasitism. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the self-superparasitism of O. kuvanae at different host densities (5, 10, 15 and 20), female ages (3 and 5 days) and durations of exposure (1 and 5 days) under various laboratory conditions (25°C?±?1°C, RH 60?±?5% and a 16:8?h light:dark photoperiod) as well as in a new laboratory host, Philosamia ricini (Danovan) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) of O. kuvanae. In this study, we determined the rate of egg superparasitism and adult emergence and recorded development time, longevity and body weight. Superparasitism increased with female age and the duration of exposure to parasitoids when females had access to five host eggs. Superparasitism increased the number of parasitoid offspring, but it resulted in male-biased (56.90%) progeny. Furthermore, superparasitism caused deleterious effects to the fitness of the progeny by prolonging the developmental process, and decreasing longevity. For example, we found that when four adults can emerge from one superparasitised host egg, the body size of the parasitoid offspring decreases significantly. Hence, superparasitism should be avoided when mass rearing O. kuvanae.  相似文献

Winter survival and oviposition before and after overwintering in Ooencyrtus nezarae, an egg parasitoid of phytophagous heteropterans, were examined in Osaka, Japan. Eggs of Riptortus clavatus parasitized by O. nezarae were kept under natural photoperiod and temperature. When honey was supplied, some female adults emerging from early September to late November overwintered. The percentage of overwintering individuals increased as the date of adult emergence advanced. Most female adults supplied with honey and hosts oviposited soon after emergence, then stopped laying eggs. Female adults emerging in mid‐October and early November laid eggs and then overwintered. The induction of diapause in the field seems to vary greatly depending on host availability. Without honey, the survival time of female adults was very short, whether host eggs were supplied or not. After overwintering, most females began to lay eggs in early May if host eggs were supplied, and they produced both male and female progeny. In the study area, a legume field in Osaka, parasitization by O. nezarae was observed from early July to November.  相似文献

Gryon japonicum (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) is a solitary egg parasitoid of Riptortus clavatus (Thunberg) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) one of the most important pests in soybean in Korean and Japan. Refrigeration of R. clavatus eggs for up to 120 days was evaluated as a method of mass production of G. japonicum. The refrigeration reduced the eclosion of eggs, thus no nymph emerged after 30 days of egg refrigeration. Increased duration of host acceptance behaviors by G. japonicum and some detrimental effects on parasitism rate, developmental time, longevity, and adult size of the parasitoid were found in refrigerated host eggs. However, all the biological parameters of G. japonicum were unaffected by the refrigeration of up to 30 days. Gryon japonicum parasitized 16 and 14 host eggs daily that were refrigerated for 15 and 30 days, respectively, which did not differ from parasitization of fresh host eggs. Furthermore, refrigeration of host eggs did not reduce the reproduction of the emerged adult parasitoids and emergence and sex ratio of their progeny. Gryon japonicum also parasitized 14 and 13 refrigerated host eggs per day kept at 26.3°C and 78.7% RH for 2 and 4 days of post-refrigeration without significant reduction, respectively. These results show that refrigeration of R. clavatus eggs can be a good method for mass rearing of the parasitoid, and the host eggs killed by cold storage can be supplemented in the field to boost field parasitism.  相似文献

Many arthropods including insects have symbiotic relationships with diverse microorganisms that can confer fitness benefits to their hosts. Riptortus pedestris is a serious pest on leguminous crops in East Asia including South Korea and Japan. Recently, has been reported that R. pedestris form symbiosis with Gram‐negative bacteria in the genus Burkholderia where they acquire symbionts from soil environments without vertical transmission from each generation. In order to address how R. pedestris acquire their symbiont from environment, we hypothesized that R. pedestris would detect and exhibit preference toward the Burkholderia symbionts. In this study, we conducted a series of dual‐choice experiments and Y‐tube olfactometer experiments to monitor and evaluate behavioral responses by 2nd instar R. pedestris toward the Burkholderia treatment and untreated control under various experimental settings in the laboratory. In dual‐choice experiments, there was no significant preference by R. pedestris to the Burkholderia treatment compared with untreated control. Also, no significant difference was detected in the first choice frequency, visiting frequency, and residence time of the insects between the two treatments. Likewise, there was no detectable preference by R. pedestris to microbial odors from the symbionts in Y‐tube experiments. Therefore, our results indicate that there was no evidence supporting that 2nd instar R. pedestris exhibit preference to the Burkholderia symbiont in the laboratory conditions of this study. Further studies are required to evaluate behavioral responses of later immature stages (i.e., 3rd and 4th instar) to the symbionts and provide choice settings at larger semi‐field arenas.  相似文献

The encyrtid genus Comperiella Howard has so far not been reported in the Philippines, where there is currently an outbreak of the coconut scale insect Aspidiotus rigidus Reyne particularly in the southern parts of the island of Luzon and in some areas in Mindanao. Among Comperiella species, only C. unifasciata Ishii has been reported as a parasitoid of A. rigidus. We report not only new sightings of this parasitoid genus in the Philippines from surveys conducted in parts of the provinces of Laguna and Batangas, but also the discovery of a possibly new species that, like C. unifasciata, has been found to parasitize A. rigidus at a high rate. These findings have presented a potential of biological control against the coconut scale insect problem that has threatened the coconut industry in the country.  相似文献

We evaluated the direct effects of three different CO2 concentrations (400, 600 and 1,000 ppm) on the population parameters and growth of the bean bug, Riptortus pedestris, while being fed on soybean. The raw life history data from R. pedestris was analyzed using an age‐stage, two‐sex life table to take the viable development rate among individuals into account. Based on the age‐stage, two‐sex life table analysis, the population projections of R. pedestris provide the stage structure and variability of the population growth under different CO2 treatments. Our results showed significantly shorter immature durations and higher pre‐adult survival rate under elevated CO2 (1,000 ppm) than those under ambient CO2 (400 ppm). The population of R. pedestris reared under elevated CO2 conditions showed higher intrinsic and finite rates of increase but a lower mean generation time than R. pedestris reared under ambient CO2 conditions. Our results show the population parameters and growth of R. pedestris are influenced by increased CO2 relative to ambient CO2 treatment. Further studies on the long‐term direct effects of different CO2 levels on R. pedestris are essential to understand their population dynamics and to establish appropriate management strategies.  相似文献

Riptortus pedestris (Hemiptera: Alydidae) is known to acquire the genus Burkholderia, symbiotic bacteria, from soil. Therefore, symbiont acquisition of R. pedestris would be directly affected by bacterial diversity in soil. Soil typically harbors diverse microbes including different Burkholderia clades such as SBE (stinkbug-associated beneficial and environmental), PBE (plant-associated beneficial and environmental), and BCC (Burkholderia cepacia and complex). Nevertheless, little is known about Burkholderia acquisition patterns of R. pedestris in nature, especially in the context of bacteria clade compositions in soil. Therefore, based on diagnostic PCR analysis, we investigated Burkholderia clade compositions in field-collected soil itself and R. pedestris when the insects were provided with the soil. Also, wild R. pedestris were surveyed to characterize their Burkholderia compositions. First, 88.44% of soil samples were detected with the genus Burkholderia, and triple clade (SBE + PBE + BCC) was most frequently detected. Second, R. pedestris nymphs readily acquired Burkholderia bacteria from field-collected soil where 91.25% of the reared insects harbored the bacteria in their midguts. In contrast to soil, the detection of single BCC clade was the most dominant among the three identified Burkholderia clades. Third, from wild R. pedestris, 80.62% of the insects were found to harbor the genus Burkholderia, and single BCC clade was most frequently detected. Finally, 29.13% and 47.06% of the reared and wild R. pedestris were detected with unidentified Burkholderia clade, which does not belong to any of the three identified clades. Our findings provide baseline information to better understand ecological associations between R. pedestris and Burkholderia bacteria in different clades.  相似文献

Supplementation of host resource can be more economical method for the biological control of insect pest compared to direct release of adult parasitoids. Periodical release of non-viable cold-stored eggs of Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) has been found to enhance parasitism of this pest in soybean fields. To find the optimum environmental conditions for cold storage of these host eggs, we evaluated nine different combinations of temperature (2, 6, and 10 °C) and relative humidity (high 90–95%, medium 70–75%, and low 30–35%). After 30 d of cold-storage, eggs were weighed and held at 26.6 °C and 75% relative humidity for 8 d before testing. To test the eggs’ suitability as hosts following cold storage, females of Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) were released individually onto batches of eggs, and parasitization rates and the development, emergence, sex ratio, adult longevity, and size of parasitoid progeny were examined. Eggs stored at high relative humidity showed less weight loss than those stored at low relative humidity. The number of eggs parasitized was highest (5.9/15) on eggs stored at 6 °C and high relative humidity. Developmental times and adult emergence were optimal on host eggs stored at 2 °C and high relative humidity. A significantly lower proportion of eggs produced male parasitoids when eggs were stored at 2 or 6 °C. Adult longevity was not affected by egg storage conditions, but adult size of progeny decreased in eggs stored at 10 °C. In conclusion, eggs of R. pedestris stored below 6 °C and with a high relative humidity maintained the best quality for parasitization by O. nezarae.  相似文献

Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) has caused severe agricultural damage in Asian regions. To clarify genetic relationships among different populations of R. pedestris in Korea, 294 COI sequences were generated from 294 individual samples collected in 42 local regions. In total, 36 haplotypes were detected from the 294 COI sequences, and the genetic distances among the 42 local populations ranged from 0.00 % to 1.50 %. In the AMOVA results, a variability of more than 98 % was observed within populations, and the median joining (MJ) networks revealed that R. pedestris has expanded by crossing the nine geographical groups. Most of the samples shared one haplotype, H2; however, some samples obtained from the same regions displayed slight genetic differences. These results indicate that R. pedestris have undergone a series of genetic variations.  相似文献

Riptortus pedestris (F.) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) is a key pest of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] in Korea and Japan. Aggregation pheromone traps have been used to attract R. pedestris. An aggregation pheromone, produced by males of R. pedestris, also attracts the egg parasitoid, Ooencyrtus nezarae Ishii (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae). As a new method of pest management, we propose the use of nonviable host eggs in the pheromone trap together to both trap R. pedestris and propagate parasitoids on host eggs attached to the trap. Approximately ten-thousand nonviable refrigerated host eggs were placed outside pheromone traps in three soybean fields (0.167-0.284 ha.). During the sampling period from 7 August to 8 October in 2008, statistical significance of treatment was not found in any life stage of R. pedestris population. However, significantly higher parasitism of both natural (78-91%) and refrigerated eggs (36-59%) occurred in the treatment sites, compared with control sites where parasitism was 0-62% and 16-34% on natural and refrigerated eggs, respectively. The proportion of bean pods with stink bug feeding damage was significantly reduced by 47% in the treatment sites. This study is the first trial of an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy using both nonviable host eggs and trap that simultaneously targets both the pest and its natural enemy.  相似文献

The function of “cuticular hydrocarbons” (CHCs) in insects is to protect the body as well as chemical communication and recognition between species. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry were used to compare the composition of CHCs in eggs, all nymph instars, and male and female adults of the bean bug, Riptortus pedestris (Hemiptera: Alydidae). CHC carbon chain numbers of each developmental stage ranged from 14 to 19 in eggs to the fourth nymph and were 24 in the last nymph. CHCs' carbon chain numbers in male and female adults increased from 16 to 23 and 16 to 27 until 6 days of age, respectively. Major components consisted of n-nonacosane in the larval stages, which changed to n-hentriacontane, n-heptacosane and 13,17-;15,19-demethyltritriacontane in adults. The major component from eggs was not identified. The major component from newly emerged adults was n-heptacosane. CHCs in different developmental stages of the bean bug consisted of n-alkanes with saturated hydrocarbons (27–63%), followed by mono or di-methyl alkanes. However, the CHCs of newly emerged female and male adults consisted mostly of methyl-alkanes. The major constituents of CHCs in the developmental stages of R. pedestris were proportionally different but showed only slight differences in composition.  相似文献

The reproductive and developmental biology of Gonatocerus ashmeadi Girault, a parasitoid of the glassy-winged sharpshooter Homalodisca coagulata (Say), was determined at five constant temperatures in the laboratory: 15; 20; 25; 30; 33 °C. At 30 °C, G. ashmeadi maintained the highest successful parasitism rates with 46.1% of parasitoid larvae surviving to adulthood. Lifetime fecundity was greatest at 25 °C and fell sharply as temperature either increased or decreased around 25 °C. Temperature had no effect on sex ratio of parasitoid offspring. Mean adult longevity was inversely related to temperature with a maximum of 20 days at 15 °C to a minimum of eight days at 33 °C. Developmental rates increased nonlinearly with increasing temperatures. Developmental rate data were fitted with the modified Logan model for oviposition to adult development times across each of the five experimental temperatures to determine optimal and upper lethal temperature thresholds. The lower developmental threshold estimated by the Logan model and linear regression were 1.10 and 7.16 °C, respectively. Linear regression of developmental rate for temperatures 15–30 °C indicated that 222 degree-days were required above a minimum threshold of 7.16 °C to complete development. A temperature of 37.6 °C was determined to be the upper development threshold with optimal development occurring at 30.5 °C. Demographic parameters were calculated and pseudo-replicates for intrinsic rate of increase (rm), net reproductive rates (Ro), generation time (Tc), population doubling time (Td), and finite rate of increase (λ) were generated using the bootstrap method. Mean bootstrap estimates of demographic parameters were compared across temperatures using ANOVA and nonlinear regression.  相似文献

In vitro rearing of the egg parasitoidTrissolcus basalis (WOLL.) from eggs collected on the natural hostNezara viridula (L.) was initiated. Several oligidic diets containing insect material (Manduca sexta hemolymph or host egg content) were tested. Our initial medium with 50% hemolymph induced a high egg mortality, but by decreasing the hemolymph concentration, increasing the hen egg yolk concentration and adding 15% of free amino acids mixture, a hatching rate of 85% of the parasitoid eggs was obtained with 39% reaching the second instar and 33% the third instar. In a medium without hemolymph, but with 18% liquid from parasitized host eggs we obtained 90% to 100% hatching, 25 to 27% reaching the second instar and 8% the third instar. We did not obtain pupation from eggsin vitro, but did get pupae and adults from larvae rearedin vivo to second instar and transfered to anin vitro system.   相似文献

Riptortus pedestris (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Alydidae) has recently become an important fruit-spotting bug of apple and sweet persimmon trees in Korea. Although fruits of cultivated species are unsuitable food for some fruit-spotting bugs, the dietary importance of fruits of apple and sweet persimmon for R. pedestris is unknown. We evaluated harvested fruits of apple and sweet persimmon with or without soybean seeds as a food source for R. pedestris by investigating nymphal development time, immature mortality, preovipositional period, fecundity, and adult size in the laboratory. No first instars of R. pedestris that were fed only apple or sweet persimmon fruits became third instar nymphs. When supplemented with soybean seeds, both fruits supported nymphal development and reproduction of R. pedestris. However, fruits combined with soybean seeds were not a better diet than soybean seeds only. Therefore, apples and sweet persimmons are not essential food sources for the development and the reproduction of R. pedestris. These results suggest that R. pedestris may not reproduce on fruit trees, thus explaining the absence of eggs and nymphs of this bug on fruit trees in orchards. Management of nearby vegetation of fruit orchards would be important for reducing damage by adult R. pedestris.  相似文献
