Objective

This study modeled win and lose trials in a simple gambling task to examine the effect of entire win–lose situations (WIN, LOSS, or TIE) on single win/lose trials and related neural underpinnings.

Methods

The behavior responses and brain activities of 17 participants were recorded by an MRI scanner while they performed a gambling task. Different conditions were compared to determine the effect of the task on the behavior and brain activity of the participants. Correlations between brain activity and behavior were calculated to support the imaging results.

Results

In win trials, LOSS caused less intense posterior cingulate activity than TIE. In lose trials, LOSS caused more intense activity in the right superior temporal gyrus, bilateral superior frontal gyrus, bilateral anterior cingulate, bilateral insula cortex, and left orbitofrontal cortex than WIN and TIE.

Conclusions

The experiences of the participants in win trials showed great similarity among different win–lose situations. However, the brain activity and behavior responses of the participants in lose trials indicated that they experienced stronger negative emotion in LOSS. The participants also showed an increased desire to win in LOSS than in WIN or TIE conditions.  相似文献

People often avoid information and situations that have the potential to contradict previously held beliefs and attitudes (i.e., situations that arouse cognitive dissonance). According to the motivated social cognition model of political ideology, conservatives tend to have stronger epistemic needs to attain certainty and closure than liberals. This implies that there may be differences in how liberals and conservatives respond to dissonance-arousing situations. In two experiments, we investigated the possibility that conservatives would be more strongly motivated to avoid dissonance-arousing tasks than liberals. Indeed, U.S. residents who preferred more conservative presidents (George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan) complied less than Americans who preferred more liberal presidents (Barack Obama and Bill Clinton) with the request to write a counter-attitudinal essay about who made a “better president.” This difference was not observed under circumstances of low perceived choice or when the topic of the counter-attitudinal essay was non-political (i.e., when it pertained to computer or beverage preferences). The results of these experiments provide initial evidence of ideological differences in dissonance avoidance. Future work would do well to determine whether such differences are specific to political issues or topics that are personally important. Implications for political behavior are discussed.  相似文献

Background

Living alone can be tough and risky for the elderly, typically, a fall can have serious consequences for them. Consequently, smart homes are becoming more and more popular. Such sensors-enriched environments can be exploited for health-care applications, in particular, Anomaly Detection (AD). Currently, most AD solutions only focus on detecting anomalies in the user daily activities while omitting the ones coming from the environment itself. However, it appears that serious anomalies can be caused by the environment during the user activity such as getting sick during sleeping when it is cold and the window is open.

Methods

In order to consider environmental context with user activities, in this paper, we present a novel approach for detecting anomalous situations occurring in the smart home environment. To that end, we propose as a first step, an activity recognition method based on an hybridization of a knowledge-based technique, taking full advantage of the semantic representation and the reasoning properties of ontologies and a data driven technique based on Dempster Shafer theory. In the second step, given the recognized activity and its surrounding context, we propose an approach that is able to built situations and detect anomalies with a level of uncertainty.

Results

Our system is implemented, tested and evaluated using real data obtained from the Hadaptic platform1 and opportunity dataset. The former dataset is used to evaluate the detection of anomalies and the latter is for the recognition of activities. Experimental results prove that with suitable time window size, the activity recognizer and the anomaly detector are efficient having respectively 91% of recognition rate and 100% of precision.

Conclusion

Our method allows, on one hand, recognizing user activities and, on the other hand, detecting eventual occurrence of anomalies in the user's situation. It proves to be efficient using the tested datasets for each module. However, in order to obtain a more general conclusion we plan to evaluate the method using more different datasets.  相似文献

The present study proposes arousal as an important mechanism driving buying impulsiveness. We examined the effect of buying impulsiveness on arousal in non-shopping and shopping contexts. In an eye-tracking experiment, we measured pupil dilation while participants viewed and rated pictures of shopping scenes and non-shopping scenes. The results demonstrated that buying impulsiveness is closely associated with arousal as response to viewing pictures of shopping scenes. This pertained for hedonic shopping situations as well as for utilitarian shopping situations. Importantly, the effect did not emerge for non-shopping scenes. Furthermore, we demonstrated that arousal of impulsive buyers is independent from cognitive evaluation of scenes in the pictures.  相似文献

Twin rhesus monkeys, born in a laboratory cage, were reared alone with their mother for a year. Observations were made of mother-infant interactions. Differences between the infants which concerned the amount of time spent off the mother seem to have been due to differences in the behaviour of the mother towards the two twins, whereas differences between measures of behaviour while off the mother seem to have been due to differences between the twins. The twins also differed in activity and in responses to mildly frightening or strange situations. The behaviour of the twins was compared with that of two single infants reared under the same cage conditions and also alone with their mothers. Some differences were found between the twins and the singles in mother-infant interaction, and there were also some differences in activity and in responses to mildly frightening or strange situations.  相似文献

Ultraviolet light has intriguing potential as a marine antifoulant, targeting almost any species and applicable to almost any surface, while not accumulating in the environment. This study field-tested the effects of periodic ultraviolet-C illumination on marine macrofouling. Across four experiments, several UV illumination duty cycles were tested against controls with no illumination. Duty cycles between 1:2 (time with UV:total time per cycle) and 1:20 were all similarly effective, inhibiting almost all macrofouling at three different temperate Northeast Pacific and Northwest Atlantic sites. Susceptible taxa included barnacles, bryozoans, tunicates (colonial and solitary), and, to a slightly lesser extent, mussels. Duty cycles of 1:30 and 1:60 reduced but did not eliminate biofouling. Measurements of ultraviolet illumination on oceanographic sensors showed similar results. The results suggest further investigation of ultraviolet light as an antifoulant for marine sensors, including susceptibility of other taxa, optimizing illumination patterns, and exploring the potential for evolved resistance.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour and diets of fishes in two tropical habitats, a marine reef and a freshwater pond, were studied comparatively in Brazil. Similarities were found in the tactics employed to obtain food, the social patterns during foraging, and the general diet, notwithstanding lower-level taxonomic differences between the food items. The feeding behaviours of about one-third of the fish fauna from each community were approximately equivalent. The feeding categories of these fishes are briefly described. The similarities in the feeding modes probably reflect structural and functional properties shared by the two communities. Additional behavioural similarities of fishes in both habitats are presented and the lack of some particular foraging modes in each community is noted. The picture emerged that different, unrelated fish assemblages have the ability to evolve towards a similar behavioural and structural organization in response to comparable situations and constraints. The value of underwater observations and naturalistic studies on tropical freshwater fish assemblages is indicated.  相似文献

The seriousness of the risk that healthcare workers faced during SARS, and their response of service in the face of this risk, brings to light unrealistic assumptions about duty and risk that informed the debate on duty to care in the early years of HIV/AIDS. Duty to care is not based upon particular virtues of the health professions, but arises from social reflection on what response to an epidemic would be consistent with our values and our needs, recognizing our shared vulnerability to disease and death. Such reflection underwrites a strong duty of care, but one not to be borne solely by the altruism and heroism of individual healthcare workers.  相似文献

Despite the potential of social media for environmental monitoring, concerns remain about the quality and reliability of the information automatically extracted. Notably there are many observations of wildlife on Twitter, but their automated detection is a challenge due to the frequent use of wildlife related words in messages that have no connection with wildlife observation. We investigate whether and what type of supervised machine learning methods can be used to create a fully automated text classification model to identify genuine wildlife observations on Twitter, irrespective of species type or whether Tweets are geo-tagged. We perform experiments with various techniques for building feature vectors that serve as input to the classifiers, and consider how they affect classification performance. We compare three classification approaches and perform an analysis of the types of features that are indicative for genuine wildlife observations on Twitter. In particular, we compare some classical machine learning algorithms, widely used in ecology studies, with state-of-the-art neural network models. Results showed that the neural network-based model Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) outperformed the classical methods. Notably this was the case for a relatively small training corpus, consisting of less than 3000 instances. This reflects that fact that the BERT classifier uses a transfer learning approach that benefits from prior learning on a very much larger collection of generic text. BERT performed particularly well even for Tweets that employed specialised language relating to wildlife observations. The analysis of possible indicative features for wildlife Tweets revealed interesting trends in the usage of hashtags that are unrelated to official citizen science campaigns. The findings from this study facilitate more accurate identification of wildlife-related data on social media which can in turn be used for enriching citizen science data collections.  相似文献

Flexibility in the echolocation call structure of bats can improve their performances, because, in some situations, some signal designs are better than others. Hence, at least some bats should adjust their echolocation calls according to the setting in which they are operating but also to the specific task at hand, that is their behavioral intention. We studied variation in the echolocation calls of Pipistrellus kuhlii emitted during four flight situations that were similar in setting but differed in behavioral context: emergence from a roost, commuting to and from foraging sites, foraging and returning to a roost. Echolocation calls produced by P. kuhlii differed significantly according to the flight situation. Call types differed most distinctly between foraging and commuting. We also found a high variance in the emergence calls we recorded, perhaps reflecting pre- and post-takeoff calls. Discriminant function analysis on calls emitted while foraging, commuting or returning to the roost classified the calls to the correct group 73.3% of the time. The differences between bats' echolocation calls in different flight situations might indicate an intrinsic change in the bat's behavior. Recognizing these differences could be crucial when using call variables to identify bat species.  相似文献

Many dorid nudibranchs possess large numbers of calcareous spicules in their mantle, gill, rhinophores and foot. However, the arrangements of these structures and their differences among taxa are poorly known. Spicule networks were stained with Alizarin red and compared among 12 species of cryptobranchiate dorid nudibranchs and four outgroups. Three general types of networks were found: a cobweb-like, unbraced framework of one or few spicules per side; a ramifying system of thick, spiculated tracts; and a lattice-like arrangement of distinct radial and circumferential tracts. The Discodorididae species investigated shared a cobweb-like network and papillae supported by a ring of spicules, while the Porostomata showed consistent characters leading to a lattice-like network with larger spicules in the central notum. The Dorididae studied were not cohesive, but each species shared characters with the aforementioned groups. Therefore, spicule network form may provide new characters to help resolve the phylogeny of Doridina.  相似文献

Background

Surveys are popular methods to measure public perceptions in emergencies but can be costly and time consuming. We suggest and evaluate a complementary “infoveillance” approach using Twitter during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. Our study aimed to: 1) monitor the use of the terms “H1N1” versus “swine flu” over time; 2) conduct a content analysis of “tweets”; and 3) validate Twitter as a real-time content, sentiment, and public attention trend-tracking tool.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Between May 1 and December 31, 2009, we archived over 2 million Twitter posts containing keywords “swine flu,” “swineflu,” and/or “H1N1.” using Infovigil, an infoveillance system. Tweets using “H1N1” increased from 8.8% to 40.5% (R 2 = .788; p<.001), indicating a gradual adoption of World Health Organization-recommended terminology. 5,395 tweets were randomly selected from 9 days, 4 weeks apart and coded using a tri-axial coding scheme. To track tweet content and to test the feasibility of automated coding, we created database queries for keywords and correlated these results with manual coding. Content analysis indicated resource-related posts were most commonly shared (52.6%). 4.5% of cases were identified as misinformation. News websites were the most popular sources (23.2%), while government and health agencies were linked only 1.5% of the time. 7/10 automated queries correlated with manual coding. Several Twitter activity peaks coincided with major news stories. Our results correlated well with H1N1 incidence data.

Conclusions

This study illustrates the potential of using social media to conduct “infodemiology” studies for public health. 2009 H1N1-related tweets were primarily used to disseminate information from credible sources, but were also a source of opinions and experiences. Tweets can be used for real-time content analysis and knowledge translation research, allowing health authorities to respond to public concerns.  相似文献

The hypothesis being tested was that the exposure of female workers to the electromagnetic field (EMF) emitted by an induction hob (IHb) meeting public exposure limitations (evaluated according to EN/IEC 62233) is also compliant with European Directive 2013/35/EU on workers’ protection. The electric field induced in three female models in a realistic ergonomically comfortable posture near IHb was evaluated using numerical models of 25 kHz EMF sources (IHb covered by cooking vessels). It was found that, in analyzed ergonomically comfortable exposure situations, the electric field induced in the user's body may exceed public and workers’ limits when the vessels do not match the dimensions of IHb's heating zone. This can even be the case when IHb complies with Conformité Européenne labeling requirements (i.e. EMF exposure falls below public limits 30 cm away from IHb edge). In the 36 exposure scenarios analyzed, statistically significant differences were found when the distances from IHb and vessel dimension, and the height and body mass index of models in exposure scenarios varied, but not between the use of models of pregnant and nonpregnant women. The use of IHb complying with European requirements on general public protection does not ensure that EMF exposure to workers complies with the relevant limits. This study compares the flight and echolocation behaviour of three vespertilionid bat species while they commute on flyways. We measured the bats’ spatial position relative to vertical background contours and relative to the ground while recording their echolocation behaviour. In Myotis daubentonii, we found a significant influence of spatial context on the position and dimensions of flyways as well as on echolocation behaviour. In gap situations, flyways tended to be narrower and located closer to background structures, flight speeds were lower and the bandwidth of echolocation signals was larger than in edge situations. Differences in background structure did not affect flight and echolocation behaviour. When commuting in the same gap situation flyway positions and dimensions for M. daubentonii and Myotis brandtii were similar but differed from those of Pipistrellus pipistrellus, which were slightly higher and further out than those used by the Myotis species. In M. brandtii, flyway positions and dimensions remained constant over 3 years. We found species-dependent differences in signal structure, but pulse interval and flight speed were similar across all species. The influence of available space on the position of flyways, on flight speed and on echolocation behaviour is discussed.  相似文献

Social media like blogs, micro-blogs or social networks are increasingly being investigated and employed to detect and predict trends for not only social and physical phenomena, but also to capture environmental information. Here we argue that opportunistic biodiversity observations published through Twitter represent one promising and until now unexplored example of such data mining. As we elaborate, it can contribute to real-time information to traditional ecological monitoring programmes including those sourced via citizen science activities. Using Twitter data collected for a generic assessment of social media data in ecological monitoring we investigated a sample of what we denote biodiversity observations with species determination requests (N = 191). These entail images posted as messages on the micro-blog service Twitter. As we show, these frequently trigger conversations leading to taxonomic determinations of those observations. All analysed Tweets were posted with species determination requests, which generated replies for 64% of Tweets, 86% of those contained at least one suggested determination, of which 76% were assessed as correct. All posted observations included or linked to images with the overall image quality categorised as satisfactory or better for 81% of the sample and leading to taxonomic determinations at the species level in 71% of provided determinations. We claim that the original message authors and conversation participants can be viewed as implicit or embryonic citizen science communities which have to offer valuable contributions both as an opportunistic data source in ecological monitoring as well as potential active contributors to citizen science programmes.  相似文献

Decoding others' intentions is a crucial aspect of social cognition. Neuroimaging studies suggest that inferring immediate goals engages the neural system for action understanding (i.e. mirror system), while the decoding of long-term intentions requires the system subserving the attribution of mental states (i.e. mentalizing). A controversial issue, stimulated by recent inconsistent results, concerns whether the two systems are concurrently vs. exclusively involved in intention understanding. This issue is particularly relevant in the case of social interactions, whose processing has been mostly, but not uncontroversially, associated with the mentalizing system. We tested the alternative hypothesis that the relative contribution of the two systems in intention understanding may also depend on the shared goal of interacting agents. To this purpose, 27 participants observed social interactions differing in their cooperative vs. affective shared goal during functional-Magnetic-Resonance-Imaging. The processing of both types of interactions activated the right temporo-parietal junction involved in mentalizing on action goals. Additionally, whole-brain and regions-of-interest analyses showed that the action understanding system (inferior prefrontal-parietal cortex) was more strongly activated by cooperative interactions, while the mentalizing-proper system (medial prefrontal cortex) was more strongly engaged by affective interactions. These differences were modulated by individual differences in empathizing. Both systems can thus be involved in understanding social intentions, with a relative weighting depending on the specific shared goal of the interaction.  相似文献

This work is the second fragment of the investigation of the nature of individual differences in physiological principles of infant temperament. The aim of this stage of the study was to estimate the contribution of genotypic and environmental factors to the formation of individual differences in childhood temperament of the second half-year of life. The experimental group consisted of 172 infants from mono- and dyzygotic twin pairs, aged 8–12 months. The estimations of the level of psychomotor development (by Bayley’s Scales) of all the children were normal. The temperament was estimated by Balleyguier’s Questionnaire, which has a number of substantial advantages over other questionnaires. The contribution of genetic and environmental factors was statistically analyzed by model fitting at the levels of individual temperamental features (questionnaire scales) and integral dimensions (the basic factors of the factor structure of estimations by the scales). It was shown that the nature of individual differences in the temperamental features of children of the second half-year of life markedly differs. The features such as activity, irritability, aggression, and negative emotional background in neutral everyday situations are under rigid genetic control. The sensitivity to punishment signal is to an equal extent determined genetically and by the factors of shared (family) environment, while the individual differences in sociability are predominantly determined by the family environment. A significant discordance between the observed phenomena and the data of recent literature is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

The present study attempted to identify situations that would lead subjects to endorse euthanasia when no implicit assumption about the inevitability of death was made. Participants in the study were 54 males and 47 females enrolled in introductory psychology courses at the University of California, Los Angeles. Subjects indicated how likely they would be to endorse euthanasia in specific hypothetical situations for themselves and for each of their parents. When a factor analysis was conducted on the self situations, four factors were identified: (1) physical condition and pain; (2) external sanction, financial hardship, and emotional stress; (3) mental alertness; and (4) lowered expectation of recovery. A factor analysis was also conducted on the parents’ situations and four slightly different factors were obtained. The results indicate that different decisional criteria are used for self than for parents. Also, the decision to terminate another's life appears to involve the consideration of more factors than the decision to terminate one's own life. Neither sex nor religious affiliation differences were found to be related to the endorsement of euthanasia. However, a significant relationship was found between endorsement of euthanasia and low scores on a religiosity measure when subjects were divided into low and high scorers.  相似文献

Doubly labeled water (DLW) is an accurate, portable method for measuring free-living energy expenditure. However, under certain conditions shifts in baseline abundance of deuterium and oxygen-18 tracers used in the method may produce errors in derivation of both turnover (k) rates and calculated energy expenditure. Present objectives were to examine during what experimental situations baseline errors arise and to address means of correcting for such baseline shifts so that consequent errors in energy expenditure calculations are minimized. Under conditions where shifts in baseline abundance for deuterium and oxygen-18 parallel abundances corresponding to the natural meteoric water ratio, self-compensating changes in k values for both deuterium and oxygen will result in minimal error to the DLW energy expenditure calculations, provided that the dose ratio of isotopes also mimics the meteoric water line. However, in situations where relative shifts in abundance of each isotope across the measurement period are not in parallel relative to the natural meteoric water line, then the potential for larger DLW errors exists. Optimally, subjects should equilibrate with the new water source. Failing this, correction for shifting baseline can be accomplished by measuring isotopic abundance changes in a control group of subjects not given the DLW dose, but performing similar tasks and consuming the same diet as the group given DLW. Alternatively, theoretically based correction values can be calculated given knowledge of the abundances of the final drinking water and the interval time that subjects consumed the new fluid.  相似文献
