Food preferences and food availability are two major determinants of the diet of generalist herbivores and of their spatial distribution. How do these factors interact and eventually lead to diet differentiation in co-occurring herbivores? We quantified the diet of four grasshopper species co-occurring in subalpine grasslands using DNA barcoding of the plants contained in the faeces of individuals sampled in the field. The food preferences of each grasshopper species were assessed by a choice (cafeteria) experiment from among 24 plant species common in five grassland plots, in which the four grasshoppers were collected, while the habitat was described by the relative abundance of plant species in the grassland plots. Plant species were characterised by their leaf economics spectrum (LES), quantifying their nutrient vs. structural tissue content. The grasshoppers’ diet, described by the mean LES of the plants eaten, could be explained by their plant preferences but not by the available plants in their habitat. The diet differed significantly across four grasshopper species pairs out of six, which validates food preferences assessed in standardised conditions as indicators for diet partitioning in nature. In contrast, variation of the functional diversity (FD) for LES in the diet was mostly correlated to the FD of the available plants in the habitat, suggesting that diet mixing depends on the environment and is not an intrinsic property of the grasshopper species. This study sheds light on the mechanisms determining the feeding niche of herbivores, showing that food preferences influence niche position whereas habitat diversity affects niche breadth.  相似文献

Field and laboratory studies have demonstrated that food-storing species have an impressive memory and an enlarged region of the brain, the hippocampal region. Lesion experiments have shown that the hippocampus is important in accurate retrieval of stored food. Taken together, these results have led to the hypothesis that the enlarged hippocampus is associated with the memory requirements of retrieving stored food. In this review, we discuss four areas of study: comparative studies of the brain, comparative studies of behaviour, developmental plasticity and seasonal changes in food storing and the hippocampus.  相似文献

Traditional ecological theory predicts that the stability of simple food webs will decline with an increasing number of trophic levels and increasing amounts of omnivory. These ideas have been tested using protozoans in laboratory microcosms. However, the results are equivocal, and contrary to expectation, omnivory is common in natural food webs. Two recent developments lead us to re-evaluate these predictions using food webs assembled from protists and bacteria. First, recent modelling work suggests that omnivory is actually stabilizing, providing that interactions are not too strong. Second, it is difficult to evaluate the degree of omnivory of some protozoan species without explicit experimental tests. This study used seven species of ciliated protozoa and a mixed bacterial flora to assemble four food webs with two trophic levels, and four webs with three trophic levels. Protist species were assigned a rank for their degree of omnivory using information in the literature and the results of experiments that tested whether the starvation rate of predators was influenced by the amount of bacteria on which they may have fed and whether cannibalism (a form of omnivory) occurred. Consistent with recent modelling work, both bacterivorous and predatory species with higher degrees of omnivory showed more stable dynamics, measured using time until extinction and the temporal variability of population density. Systems with two protist species were less persistent than systems with one protist species, supporting the prediction that longer food chains will be less stable dynamically. This study aimed to characterize the food intake by the fish assemblage inhabiting aquatic macrophytes stands, evaluating the changes in food availability among the periods of the hydrologic cycle and the trophic responses of the fish assemblage along with food availability. Fish sampling was conducted in stands of aquatic macrophytes (predominantly Paspalum repens, Poaceae) along banks of the Trombetas River during the four hydrologic periods (rising, high, receding, and low water level) that represent different phenological conditions of the habitat. The food consumption by the fish assemblage was analyzed for 41 species with stomach contents. The assemblage fed mainly on aquatic insects, periphytic algae and detritus. Food availability analysis showed that food resources changed among periods. Fifteen species were present in more than one period and most of those species showed dietary changes along with the hydrologic cycle, feeding mainly on invertebrates in the rising water period and periphytic algae and detritus in receding and low water periods. Only four species showed sufficient numbers to be analyzed in relation to diet and food availability along the at least three hydrologic periods, two of which showed a positive correlation between diet and food availability for three of the four periods; the other two species did not show this correlation, and presented omnivorous habits. In all cases, the selectivity values for the most important food items were near zero, indicating that intake was not motivated by feeding preference. Our results suggest that both trophic plasticity and omnivorous diets are important adaptations for species that inhabit temporally variable habitats such as aquatic macrophytes stands.  相似文献

1992年 8月至 1 993年 5~ 6月在渤海调查过程中取得了大量海洋浮游生物样品 ,从中获得 80 0个消化道内含有食物的真刺唇角水蚤标本 ,经分析得出 :真刺唇角水蚤营小型浮游生物食性 ,主要摄食小型桡足类 (占其食物组成的 76.4% ) ,其中小拟哲水蚤是它的主要摄食对象 ( 74.7% ) .此外 ,它也摄食少量硅藻类 ( 2 3.0 % )、甲藻类 ( 1 .1 % )、金藻类 ( <0 .1 % )和纤毛虫类 ( 1 .5% ) ;其食物组成有明显的季节变化 ;其类群更替率各季平均达 30 .7% ,其种类更替率达 40 .3% ,并显示出硅藻类自春至冬逐渐增高而桡足类逐渐降低的规律性 .其摄食强度以春季为最高 ,秋季居第二位 ,夏季居第三位 ,冬季最低 .  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA sequencing was used to identify and distinguish four species of commercially important Mediterranean grey mullets. Partial cytochrome b and D-loop sequences were obtained from the four fish species, and these were used to perform phylogenetic analysis and to determine species-specific DNA fingerprints. Species-specific amplification primers were designed from these fingerprints, and these were used to characterize the species origin of several samples of commercial, processed mullet ovary products. In addition to differentiating between food products from different species, this method is also sensitive enough to distinguish food products from mullets of the same species from different regions.  相似文献

1. Generalist insect herbivores occupy a variety of habitats that differ in food plant composition. Dietary mixing has been proposed as a possibility for generalists to overcome nutritional deficiencies of single plant species, but only a few studies have investigated herbivore feeding and fitness for diets that resemble natural scenarios. We studied feeding behaviour, survival, and reproduction of the generalist grasshopper Chorthippus parallelus raised on food plants of four typical habitats. 2. Grasshopper diet consisted of grasses (92.5%), legumes (6.7%) and, in small quantities, other forbs (0.8%). Diet selection differed between the four food plant mixtures, and depended on grasshopper sex and developmental stage. There was no correlation between the relative abundance of plant species in the field and the fraction of these species in the grasshopper diet. 3. Grasshoppers survived on average for 40.4 ± 1.0 days before maturity, grew 106.8 mg until maturity moult, and females laid 4.1 ± 0.4 egg pods, each of which contained 8.5 ± 0.4 eggs. However, despite the differences in feeding behaviour, grasshopper fitness was the same in all of the four food plant mixtures. While the digestibility of ingested food was similar in the four different treatments, indices indicated differences in the conversion efficiency to body mass. 4. Our results show that C. parallelus is a plastic feeder with no fixed preferences in diet composition. The results emphasise that generalist herbivores can counteract putative quality deficiencies of single food plants by selective dietary mixing.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The protein content of individuals of four species of cladoceran and two species of rotifer in eight ponds was measured over several time periods. The protein content in coarsely filtered water, which includes particulate (less than 31 μm for cladoceran and less than 10μm for rotifers) and dissolved proteins, was also analysed to estimate the amount of food available to the animals.
2. A positive relationship between protein content of individuals and protein in the food was found for all the species. The increase in protein content of the animals was less pronounced when food was more abundant.
3. When food concentration was lower, a greater reduction in protein content was observed in two species of rotifers than in four cladoceran species. Moreover, when comparing among species of Cladocera, the reduction in protein content at low food concentrations was more marked in the small-bodied than in the large-bodied species. These results are consistent with the size-efficiency hypothesis.  相似文献

Food web stability: the influence of trophic flows across habitats   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12  
In nature, fluxes across habitats often bring both nutrient and energetic resources into areas of low productivity from areas of higher productivity. These inputs can alter consumption rates of consumer and predator species in the recipient food webs, thereby influencing food web stability. Starting from a well-studied tritrophic food chain model, we investigated the impact of allochthonous inputs on the stability of a simple food web model. We considered the effects of allochthonous inputs on stability of the model using four sets of biologically plausible parameters that represent different dynamical outcomes. We found that low levels of allochthonous inputs stabilize food web dynamics when species preferentially feed on the autochthonous sources, while either increasing the input level or changing the feeding preference to favor allochthonous inputs, or both, led to a decoupling of the food chain that could result in the loss of one or all species. We argue that allochthonous inputs are important sources of productivity in many food webs and their influence needs to be studied further. This is especially important in the various systems, such as caves, headwater streams, and some small marine islands, in which more energy enters the food web from allochthonous inputs than from autochthonous inputs.  相似文献

A common approach to analyse stability of biological communities is to calculate the interaction strength matrix. Problematic in this approach is defining intraspecific interaction strengths, represented by diagonal elements in the matrix, due to a lack of empirical data for these strengths. Theoretical studies have shown that an overall increase in these strengths enhances stability. However, the way in which the pattern in intraspecific interaction strengths, i.e. the variation in these strengths between species, influences stability has received little attention. We constructed interaction strength matrices for 11 real soil food webs in which four patterns for intraspecific interaction strengths were chosen, based on the ecological literature. These patterns included strengths that were (1) similar for all species, (2) trophic level dependent, (3) biomass dependent, or (4) death rate dependent. These four patterns were analysed for their influence on (1) ranking food webs by their stability and (2) the response in stability to variation of single interspecific interaction strengths. The first analysis showed that ranking the 11 food webs by their stability was not strongly influenced by the choice of diagonal pattern. In contrast, the second analysis showed that the response of food web stability to variation in single interspecific interaction strengths was sensitive to the choice of diagonal pattern. Notably, stability could increase using one pattern and decrease using another. This result asks for deliberate approaches to choose diagonal element values in order to make predictions on how particular species, interactions, or other food web parameters affect food web stability.  相似文献

采用体视显微镜和骨骼双染色法对5种不同栖息环境的无尾两栖动物蝌蚪的口器和舌鳃骨的形态结构特征进行了观察。5种蝌蚪口器由唇齿行、唇乳突和角质颌等组成。舌鳃骨是由关联骨Ⅰ、关联骨Ⅱ、角舌骨、舌鳃骨盘和角鳃骨等骨骼组成。蝌蚪的梅氏软骨若较发达,其摄食方式可能为刮食;蝌蚪的舌鳃骨发达,其摄食方式则可能为滤食。角质颌、唇齿以及角鳃骨上鳃耙的出现显著增强了蝌蚪主动摄食能力和对食物与非食物的主动选择性。  相似文献

Summary The relationship between the food selection of four leaf beetle species (Phratora vitellinae, Plagiodera versicolora, Lochmaea capreae, Galerucella lineola) and the phenolic glycosides of willow (Salix spp.) leaves was tested in laboratory food choice experiments. Four willow species native to the study area (Eastern Finland) and four introduced, cultivated willows were tested.The willow species exhibited profound differences in their phenolic glycoside composition and total concentration. The food selection patterns of the leaf beetles followed closely the phenolic glycoside spectra of the willow species. Both the total amount and the composition of phenolic glycosides affected the feeding by the beetles. Phenolic glycosides apparently have both stimulatory and inhibitory influences on leaf beetle feeding depending on the degree of adaptation of a particular insect. Very rare glycosides or exceptional combination of several glycoside types seem to provide certain willow species with high level of resistance against most herbivorous insects. Analogously the average absolute amount of leaf beetle feeding was lower on the introduced willows than on the native species to which the local herbivores have a good opportunity to become adapted.  相似文献

A comparative study was carried out on the seasonal variation in egg and body volumes of four species of rotifers, Brachionus calyciflorus, Brachionus angularis, Keratella quadrata and Anuraeopsis fissa, from ponds near Sevilla and in Doñana National Park. Temperature and food concentration significantly affected egg volume in all four species; clutch size significantly affected egg volume in A. fissa, B. calyciflorus and B. angularis, but not in K. quadrata. As temperature increased, egg and body volumes declined in A. fissa and B. angularis but increased in K. quadrata and B. calyciflorus due, perhaps, to complex interactions between temperature, food level and clutch size.All four rotifer species responded similarly to changes in food concentration: below a certain food level, egg and body volumes were small but increased to a maximal size, which differed in the four species, as the food concentration was raised. At higher food levels, there was a reduction in egg and body volumes. The food levels for maximum egg and body volumes are interpreted as optimal ones; below these, food limitation reduces the size of the reproducing adult and, consequently, the size of eggs. Above this optimal level, higher food levels accelerated the rotifer life cycles, resulting in adults maturing at smaller sizes with a larger number of smaller eggs.  相似文献

Captive owl monkeys (Aotus nancymaae, A. azarai) share food frequently within both families and pairs. In this study food sharing was observed in seven mated pairs and four families (i.e., four mated pairs and their offspring). Patterns of food sharing were examined with respect to age class, sex, and the presence or absence of dependent offspring. Within families, most food transfers were from adult males to developing offspring. Adult males and females transferred food to their mates in caged pairs as well as in family units. Food interactions between adults are as likely to result in food transfers as those between adults and offspring. This pattern of food sharing between mates in a monogamous species may serve both nutritional and social functions that differ from those in polygamous species.  相似文献

SUMMARY. The food and feeding patterns of four schilbeids in Lake Kainji were studied between November 1974 and October 1975. Physailia pellucida , a small but abundant species, fed on small crustaceans and immature insects, while Schilbe mystus , a larger but less common schilbeid, fed principally on fish, with insects as a supplementary item in its diet. The rare species, Schilbe uranoscopus , was piscivorous, Siluranodon auritus , another small and rare species, is a herbivore feeding mainly on algae, with some crustaceans and immature insects taken as a source of animal protein. Preferential food selection by different length groups was found in S. mystus and P. pellucida . There were seasonal changes in the dietary items. Competition for food within the family was assumed not to occur in view of the different feeding habits of the species.  相似文献

Avian diversity in four areas of agrifields of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana was studied in order to find a correlation between agricultural land use, woody vegetation and the occurrence of bird species. The areas included College Orchard (Transect I), Agrifields of Oil seed section of Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics adjacent to orchards of PAU (Transect II), Crop field area of Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics on the back of Thapar Hall, PAU (Transect III) and Experimental area of Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics of PAU (Transect IV) which was without any trees around it. A total of 12,642 birds including 30 different species were recorded in all the four transects. The total no. of birds (5,074) and species (22) was highest in transect IV. House crow, red wattled lapwing, rose ringed parakeet and common myna were found to be the dominant birds in Transect I, II, III and IV respectively. Species richness and species diversity varied throughout the year. All the four areas had one or the other crop which attracted a number of bird species for food and the adjacent woody vegetation in Transect I, II and III providing nesting, perching and roosting sites to birds. It reveals that both the trees and food availability in the agrifields attract different bird species for different purposes like food, nesting and roosting.  相似文献

1. Adult feeding strongly increases longevity and fecundity in parasitic wasps. Searching for food resources involves costs; therefore, it is advantageous to be able to feed on the breeding substrate.
2. Cohorts of females of four drosophilid parasitoid species were assigned to different food treatments including starvation. Fat contents were measured and compared after 5 days. In this way the nutritional value of breeding substrates to females could be expressed in terms of energy reserves.
3. Three of the four species tested fed on natural breeding substrates. A fourth species did not produce evidence of such feeding. However, this species fed on honey when fat reserves were low.
4. Feeding is related to: (i) the species' natural breeding substrate, (ii) the energy allocation and lifetime expectancy of the female, and (iii) time of the season.
5. Because feeding strongly influences longevity and fecundity, it is argued that the different feeding strategies found may affect competitive relationships between these drosophilid parasitoid species.  相似文献

The metabolic responses to temperature changes and the reproductive strategies of four species of harpacticoid copepod are examined in relation to their depth distribution, susceptibility to predation and assumptions about food supply. Two species, one of which is heavily preyed upon, are confined to the surface layers and two species occur deeper in the sediment through most of the year. These latter species appear to have adopted different metabolic strategies in response to lowered food supply but both have a lower Q10 than surface dwelling species. In addition the surface species have the ability to regulate their respiratory demands at times of high, short-term, temperature fluctuations. Preliminary data suggests that generally, the surface species have shorter development times than those dwelling deeper in the sediment but until more information is available on the energetic costs of reproduction it cannot be shown that deeper dwelling species are more conservative in their reproductive strategies.  相似文献
