Training programs for research personnel are discussed as a key resource that must be part of an effective animal care and use program. Because of the legal responsibility to ensure that research staff are qualified to use animals, many institutions have justified the necessity for a training coordinator and/or trainers for their animal care and use programs. Effective training programs for research personnel must meet the needs of the client base (research scientists and staff) so that they are relevant, practical, and timely. To meet these objectives, it is useful to involve the scientific staff in the analysis of their learning needs. To meet a performance standard necessary for quality research, a large percentage of the institutional staff must participate in the training program. Often it is the principal investigators who set the tone for their staff members regarding the importance of receiving training. Garnering support from this client base will create a culture that encourages training and engenders a positive attitude about humane animal care and use. One effective approach is to incorporate nonanimal models as alternatives to live animals to teach humane handling techniques and methods, thereby contributing to refinement, reduction, and replacement (the 3Rs). Also discussed are the necessity of timely feedback from clients, documentation of personnel training for regulatory purposes, and the collection of training metrics, which assists in providing justification for the granting of additional fiscal support for the program. Finally, the compliance procedures and opportunities for essential refresher training are discussed and related to high performance standards, humane animal use, and quality research, all of which contribute to the 3Rs.  相似文献

The field of laboratory animal medicine is experiencing a serious shortage of appropriately trained veterinarians for both clinically related and research-oriented positions within academia, industry, and government. Recent outreach efforts sponsored by professional organizations have stimulated increased interest in the field. It is an opportune time to critically review and evaluate postgraduate training opportunities in the United States and Canada, including formal training programs, informal training, publicly accessible training resources and educational opportunities, and newly emerging training resources such as Internet-based learning aids. Challenges related to each of these training opportunities exist and include increasing enrollment in formal programs, securing adequate funding support, ensuring appropriate content between formal programs that may have diverse objectives, and accommodating the training needs of veterinarians who enter the field by the experience route. Current training opportunities and resources that exist for veterinarians who enter and are established within the field of laboratory animal science are examined. Strategies for improving formal laboratory animal medicine training programs and for developing alternative programs more suited to practicing clinical veterinarians are discussed. In addition, the resources for high-quality continuing education of experienced laboratory animal veterinarians are reviewed.  相似文献

The essence of learning is change; learning is the process by which learners customize new information to make it personally meaningful and relevant. Training is the process of helping students make those changes. Research indicates that adults learn differently than children or adolescents and that adults consistently use the following six learning strategies: prior experiences; conversations; metacognition; reflection; authentic experiences; and images, pictures, or other types of visuals. Each of these learning strategies can be combined with the other strategies and often build upon each other. A recent study on how health care professionals learn indicated that the learning strategy they used most often was reflection, which supports learning before, during, and after training. Numerous examples are provided in this article describing how to integrate each of the six adult learning strategies into laboratory animal science training. While lectures and other types of direct instruction are appropriate, they are inadequate and ineffective unless they are integrated with and support adult learning strategies. Both the US Department of Agriculture regulations and the Public Health Service Policy mandate that research institutions must ensure that all personnel involved in animal care, treatment, or use are qualified to perform their duties. Applying adult learning strategies to training for the laboratory animal science community will enhance learning and improve both the science and the humane care of the animals, which is a goal our community must continuously strive to achieve.  相似文献

Scalability is a major demand for high-yield, stable bioprocess systems in animal cell culture-based biopharmaceutical production. Increased yields can be achieved through high-density cell culture, such as in the combination of microcarrier and fluidized bed bioreactor technology. To minimize inocula volume in industrial applications of fluidized bed fermentation systems, it is crucial to increase the bed volume in the reactor during the fermentation process. We tested scale-up strategy for the production of recombinant human arylsulfatase B (ASB) enzyme used in enzyme replacement therapy in patients afflicted with mucopolysaccharidosis type VI (MPS VI). This enzyme was derived from Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells cultivated as adherent cell culture on Cytoline macroporous microcarriers (Amersham Biosciences, Uppsala, Sweden) using a Cytopilot Mini fluidized bed bioreactor (FBR; Amersham Biosciences, Vogelbusch, Austria). Both 1:2 expansion (herein referred to as the addition of fresh, not-yet-colonized microcarriers) and 1:6 expansion of the carrier bed were performed successfully; the cells restarted to proliferate for colonizing these newly added carriers; and the stability of the culture was not negatively affected.  相似文献

Reduction, refinement and replacement of laboratory animals wherever possible, are the guiding principles of the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA) education guidelines. Of these, reduction is probably the least understood. Reduction and refinement are dependent upon each other. In the reduction "axis", there is a window of appropriate numbers of animals; too few and the experiment will lack power--too many and animals will be wasted. Reduction must be understood as the appropriate number of animals required for each experiment. The refinement "axis" is more straightforward. Better welfare is always desirable. Any factor can interfere with a study in two ways. If it changes the mean, this may not be serious, because it should do so in all groups. If it causes a change in variation, then this is far more troublesome, because this is bound to alter the appropriate number of animals for an experiment. Scientists are definitely concerned about the variation of the characters that they are working with. It is obvious that changes in variation may be study-specific, which makes the formulation of overall guidelines difficult. Indeed, instead of trying to assess the impact of housing and procedures on every possible character, it could be more productive to look at the effects of welfare indicators on variation, with the understanding that low variation here is likely to be reflected by low variation in most other characters, while aiming to achieve the most uniform welfare of the animals in the study.  相似文献

Objective: To determine manager and staff perceptions of oral health and dental service issues for residents in aged care facilities in the Perth Metropolitan Area, Western Australia. Design: Focus groups and face‐to‐face semi‐structured interviews with aged care facility managers and staff. Setting and subjects: Personnel at 12 facilities (high‐level and low‐level care) located in the Perth Metropolitan Area participated in the study. Interviews were conducted with 14 facility managers. Focus groups and face‐to‐face interviews were conducted with 40 facility staff. Results: Managers and staff had similar views regarding most issues. While resident oral health was considered important, regular oral care programmes were limited or lacking. In general, high care facility residents did not have regular dental checkups, while those in low‐level care facilities usually visited their own dentist for checkups or treatment. Barriers to maintaining regular oral care included: resident non‐compliance; financial concerns; lack of co‐operation from family; mobility issues; and lack of interest from dental professionals. Suggested improvements to current services included regular on‐site visits, staff education and specialised dental professionals. Conclusion: Residents face many barriers to maintenance of adequate oral health care, particularly those who are functionally dependent and cognitively impaired. There is an urgent need for appropriate oral care programmes for aged care residents, which include dentists with aged care experience and continuing education for facility staff. Any major programmes should be evaluated carefully.  相似文献

Institutions are required by federal laws and regulations to oversee and evaluate their programs, facilities, and procedures for using animals in research, teaching, and/or testing activities. These responsibilities are specifically charged to an institutional official (IO) and an institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC). Initially, the individuals tasked with these responsibilities seldom have the requisite knowledge or experience to fulfill their charges effectively. Furthermore, simply reading the regulatory requirements does not prepare the novice IO and IACUC members to effectively monitor and guide the program. As a result, many new IOs and IACUC members are managing their responsibilities with insufficient understanding of the laws, regulations, standards, and policies. Specific training strategies for inexperienced IACUC members are needed to help them understand their responsibilities for ensuring animal welfare through an effective, high-quality, and compliant animal care and use program that supports the critical research needed to improve human and animal health. Likewise, most IOs would benefit from training to help them better understand their responsibility for enhancing or maintaining the quality of the institution's animal care and use program. Education and training should begin with an orientation to the laws, regulations, standards, and policies. Continuing training and education are also important to keep abreast of the changes in the interpretation of these laws and regulations as well as the changes in veterinary science. For both the IO and the IACUC, understanding and acceptance of their authority and responsibilities are significant factors in establishing and maintaining a quality animal care and use program.  相似文献

Training depends for its success upon initial selection of both students and teacher, and secondly on the curriculum content relevance to realistic job designations, consequent upon community appraisal, epidemiological surveys, manpower studies and facilities analysis. Examination systems should not be an encumbrance to real learning and the acquisition of appropriate skills. Management in primary health care depends for its improvement upon accepting that the delivery system is supportive to the primary health care unit rather than the reverse; that the structure of the delivery system and educationa; programmes correlate and form a simple referral chain and that data gathering be designed for a community information system rather than for cantralized statistics. The two aspects, manpower development and delivery system, can be made more relevant one to the other by reconsidering the overall roles of the teacher and the practitioner. Supervision is a key issue and is primarily an educational activity, not administrative. Teamwork, to be effective, must be learned and instilled from inception of training.  相似文献
