The use of natural dyes to color textiles and other objects has a long history in Andean South America, but has for the most part become a lost technology with the introduction of synthetic dyes. A literature and field survey to recover information about the traditional use of dye plants in Peru, from pre-Hispanic to recent times, was accompanied by taxonomic identification of collected dye plant materials. Fiftysix dye plants from Peruvian sources are listed.  相似文献

The microbial degradation of azo dyes: minireview   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The removal of dyes in wastewater treatment plants still involves physical or chemical processes. Yet numerous studies currently exist on degradation based on the use of microbes—which is a well-studied field. However progress in the use of biological methods to deal with this environmentally noxious waste is currently lacking. This review focuses on the largest dye class, that is azo dyes and their biodegradation. We summarize the bacteria identified thus far which have been implicated in dye decolorization and discuss the enzymes involved and mechanisms by which these colorants are broken down.  相似文献

An ethnobotanical survey of practicing dyers in the biodiversity rich ecosystems of Sierra Leone and of the literature was conducted on the common plant species used to produce natural dyes. In addition, the methods used to obtain these dyes and to dye fabric, together with the techniques used to produce various patterns on fabric were investigated. Although the thriving dye industry is now predominantly serviced by synthetic dyes, the knowledge of the plants used still survives among some dyers, who use plant dyes to some extent. However this indigenous knowledge is rapidly being lost as increasingly less of it is being passed on to succeeding generations. Several plants used in the dyeing process are documented, together with their taxonomic characteristics; local names; how the dyes are produced and fabric dyed; the colors obtained; in addition to how various patterns are designed. Sustainable utilization of this important renewable natural resource is discussed.  相似文献

High-resolution melting (HRM) analysis relies on the use of fluorescent dyes, such as LCGreen,ResoLight, and SYTO9, which bind in a saturated manner to the double-stranded DNAs. These dyes are expensive in use and may not be affordable when dealing with a large quantity of samples. EvaGreen is a much cheaper DNA helix intercalating dye and has been used in quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and post-PCR DNA melt curve analysis. Here we report on the development of an EvaGreen-based HRM analysis and its performance, in comparison with the popular LCGreen-based HRM analysis, in detection of DNA polymorphism in plants. We found that various polymorphisms ranged from single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to Indels were equally detected by using EvaGreen- or LCGreen-based HRM. EvaGreen dye was sensitive enough in discovery of SNPs in fivefold pooled samples.Using this economical dye we successfully identified multiple novel mutant alleles of Gln1-3 gene, which produces a cytosolic glutamine synthetase isoenzyme (GS1), in a maize ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS)-mutagenized library, and genotyped rice mapping populations with SNP markers. The current results suggest that EvaGreen is a promising dye for HRM analysis for its ease to use and cost effectiveness.  相似文献

Contemporary knowledge of dye plant species and natural dye use in Kurdish Autonomous Region, Iraq In Kurdistan, natural dyes once played an important role in the life of nomads as they wild-crafted and traded natural dyes for their survival. They learned from their family how to find, harvest, process, and dye with natural dyes. Abandonment of weaving and the nomadic life, and recent changes in the economy have contributed to significant changes in the natural dyeing culture. Traditional knowledge of natural dyeing plants is no longer common among weavers. This study documents the surviving knowledge of dye plant species and assesses the transmission of knowledge between elderly weavers and a younger generation of weavers’ apprentices. Information on dyeing and dyeing plants was elicited through a species recognition task using picture cards, a pile-sorting task, and through in-depth interviews with nomads in the mountains of the Soran district as well as weaving teachers and students in the city of Erbil, Kurdish Autonomous Region, Iraq. Consensus analysis of pile-sorting data supports the hypothesis that informants belong to a single culture. The results confirm the erosion of natural dyeing culture in Kurdistan and stress the need to stimulate knowledge transfer from the elderly, empirical generation to the younger, learning generation. The study also uncovered the existence of a keen interest among the student informants in traditional herbal medicine. If this trend is true for Kurdish urban youth in general, then it could lead to a revival and perpetuation of traditional plant knowledge.  相似文献

Wild and tissue cultured plants of Portulaca grandiflora Hook. have shown to be able to decolorize a sulfonated diazo dye Navy Blue HE2R (NBHE2R) up to 98% in 40 h. A significant induction in the activities of lignin peroxidase, tyrosinase and DCIP reductase was observed in the roots during dye decolorization. The wild plants and tissue cultures could independently decolorize and degrade NBHE2R into metabolites viz. N-benzylacetamide and 6-diazenyl-4-hydroxynaphthalene-2-sulfonic acid. A dye mixture and a textile effluent were also decolorized efficiently by P. grandiflora. The phytotoxicity study revealed reduction in the toxicity due to metabolites formed after dye degradation.  相似文献

Plants used as natural dye sources in Turkey   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study was carried out in the regions where handcrafts such as carpet and rug weaving are common in Turkey. In the regions where natural dyes are used, 123 plant species belonging to 50 families were identified as sources of natural dyes. In natural dye production, different parts of the plant or the whole aboveground plant is used. Ten different colors are gained from the plants. Sometimes the same color can be obtained from different plants. By mixing different plants, it is possible to produce various colors. We also identified more than 12 natural and more than eight chemical assistant substances (mordant) that are used in the regions to bind dye to fibers, to maintain the strongness and brightness of the colors, and to obtain various colors  相似文献

Azo dyes are commonly generated as effluent pollutants by dye using industries, causing contamination of surface and ground water. Various strategies are employed to treat such wastewater; however, a multi-faceted treatment strategy could be more effective for complete removal of azo dyes from industrial effluent than any single treatment. In the present study, rice husk material was used as a substratum in two constructed wetlands (CWs) and augmented with microorganisms in the presence of wetland plants to effectively treat dye-polluted water. To evaluate the efficiency of each process the study was divided into three levels, i.e., adsorption of dye onto the substratum, phytoremediation within the CW and then bioremediation along with the previous two processes in the augmented CW. The adsorption process was helpful in removing 50% dye in presence of rice husk while 80% in presence of rice husk biocahr. Augmentation of microorganisms in CW systems has improved dye removal efficiency to 90%. Similarly presence of microorganisms enhanced removal of total nitrogen (68% 0 and Total phosphorus (75%). A significant improvement in plant growth was also observed by measuring plant height, number of leaves and leave area. These findings suggest the use of agricultural waste as part of a CW substratum can provide enhanced removal of textile dyes.  相似文献

Phytoremediation, the use of plants to clean up contaminated soil and water, has a wide range of applications and advantages, and can be extended to scientific education. Phytoremediation of textile dyes can be used as a scientific experiment or demonstration in teaching laboratories of middle school, high school and college students. In the experiments that we developed, students were involved in a hands-on activity where they were able to learn about phytoremediation concepts. Experiments were set up with 20—40 mg L?1 dye solutions of different colors. Students can be involved in the set up process and may be involved in the experimental design. In its simplest forms, they use two-week-old sunflower seedlings and place them into a test tube of known volume of dye solution. Color change and/ or dye disappearance can be monitored by visual comparison or with a spectrophotometer. Intensity and extent of the lab work depends on student's educational level, and time constraints. Among the many dyes tested, Evan's Blue proved to be the most readily decolorized azo dye. Results could be observed within 1–2 hours. From our experience, dye phytoremediation experiments are suitable and easy to understand by both college and middle school students. These experiments help visual learners, as students compare the color of the dye solution before and after the plant application. In general, simple phytoremediation experiments of this kind can be introduced in many classes including biology, biochemistry and ecological engineering. This paper presents success stories of teaching phytoremediation to middle school and college students.  相似文献

Background

Bai people in the Dali Prefecture of Northwest Yunnan, China, have a long history of using plant extracts to dye their traditional costumes and maintain this culture for posterity. However, the development of modern technology, while vastly improving the dyeing efficiency, is also replacing indigenous knowledge which threatens the indigenous practice, causing the latter disappearing gradually. This study sought to examine the indigenous knowledge of plants used for textile dyeing in Bai communities, so as to provide a foundation for their sustainable development.

Methods

We conducted a semi-structured interview among 344 informants (above age 36) selected through a snowball sampling method. Free lists and participant observation were used as supplementary methods for the interviews. Three quantitative indicators (informant consensus factor [ICF], use frequency, and cultural importance index [CI]) were used to evaluate the indigenous knowledge of the dye-yielding plants.

Results

Twenty-three species belonging to 19 plant taxonomic families were used for dye by Bai communities. We summarized them into four life forms, eight used parts, five colors, three processing methods, and four dyeing methods. Among them, Strobilanthes cusia (Nees) O. Kuntze was the most traditional dyeing plant and has an important cultural value. Location, age, and gender were found to have a significant effect on indigenous knowledge, and the dyeing knowledge was dynamic and influenced by social factors.

Conclusions

Diverse plant resources and rich indigenous knowledge of textile dyeing persist at settlements of Bai communities in Dali Prefecture. However, high labor costs and thinning market of traditional products that use plant dye cause repulsion toward traditional practice. To that, a good income in other profession attracts indigenous people to shift from their tradition of making plant-based dye and associated cultural systems at risk of extinction. More research for market development for products that use plant-based dye is necessary for the conservation of this valuable knowledge and biodiversity protection in Bai communities.

Four methods of spray application were compared in 1986 with the recommended method of glyphosate application for pre-harvest retting of flax (Linum usitatissimum). Sampling individual plants immediately after application of glyphosate and dye demonstrated that spray penetration through the crop canopy, measured as dye deposition on the lower stem as a percentage of total deposition per plant, was the same for all methods of application. None of the methods of application improved the uniformity of dye deposition.
The following year, effects of deseeding prior to spraying and of using an air-assisted sprayer were investigated. Deseeding increased dye deposition on the lower stem but did not improve the efficacy of glyphosate. Application with an air-assisted sprayer increased the proportion of spray deposited on the lower stem but not the absolute amount deposited or the efficacy of glyphosate. Dye deposition on individual plants varied greatly for all methods of application and, when glyphosate was applied using the same methods, undesiccated plants occurred in all plots.
Considerable improvements in spray penetration and uniformity of spray deposition appear necessary for successful pre-harvest retting of flax with glyphosate.  相似文献

Summary In the montane herb Ipomopsis aggregata, size and placement of stamens and pistils vary substantially among flowers within plants, among nearby plants, and among groups of plants separated by 50–100 m. We trained captive hummingbirds to feed from flowers of this species in a flight cage, and explored the effects of different degrees of floral variability on carryover of fluorescent dyes that act as pollen mimics. We found that the slopes of linear dye carryover functions generally became more shallow as floral variability increased; this led to substantially longer carryover in the treatment with greatest variability. On the other hand, total amounts of dye transferred did not appear to be sensitive to the degree of variability. Floral variability may have a subtle but important effect on plant fitness by influencing the distance of pollen transfer.  相似文献

Plants traditionally used to dye carpets and woven matting in the eastern Mediterranean region were investigated. The survey was carried out in Kadirli, Feke, Aladağ, the surrounding villages of Adana, and in Osmaniye (Turkey). According to the survey results, 37 species of plants belonging to 29 families were used in natural dye production. The total dye contents of collected plants ranged from 1.5% to 10.0%. Mordants and dyes obtained from some of these plants were used to treat wool yarn and the yarn's dyed properties were tested. Some of the plants were also examined in terms of cultivation and fifteen were transferred to a Dye Plants Collection Garden. They were Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. ssp. antitaurica Yalt., Arctium minus ssp. pubens (Bab.) A method useful in tracing the vascular bundles of herbaceous plants and the water conducting system of woody plants is presented. A stock solution of 2.5% basic fuchsin in 95% alcohol is prepared. A mixture of 1 to 2 parts of the stock solution to 100 parts of tap water (slightly alkaline) is made, standing 12-48 hours and being filtered before use. Cut ends of the living plants to be examined are immersed in the working solution until the dye appears in the parts desired.

The material may be examined by serial, hand sections mounted in 50% to 75% glycerin, or it may be split, laid open, and examined with a low power lens. Clearer views may be procured by dehydrating in an alcohol series and clearing in methyl salicylate. Permanent mounts may be made by removing the methyl salicylate with xylol and mounting in balsam. Structures such as leaves, which contain considerable chlorophyll, should be first boiled in slightly alkaline 85% alcohol until the green color is removed.  相似文献

Duckweeds, such as Lemna minor Linnaeus (Alismatales: Lemnaceae), are common in aquatic habitats and have been suggested to reduce larval mosquito survivorship via mechanical and chemical effects. Furthermore, pond dyes are used increasingly in aquatic habitats to enhance their aesthetics, although they have been shown to attract mosquito oviposition. The present study examined the coupled effects of L. minor and black pond dye on the oviposition selectivity of Culex pipiens Linnaeus (Diptera: Culicidae) mosquitoes in a series of laboratory choice tests. Subsequently, using outdoor mesocosms, the combined influence of duckweed and pond dye on mosquito abundances in aquatic habitats was quantified. Mosquitoes were strongly attracted to duckweed, and oviposited significantly greater numbers of egg rafts in duckweed-treated water compared with untreated controls, even when the duckweed was ground. The presence of pond dye interacted with the duckweed and further enhanced positive selectivity towards duckweed-treated water. The presence of duckweed caused significant and sustained reductions in larval mosquito numbers, whereas the relative effects of dye were not evident. The use of floating aquatic plants such as duckweed, combined with dye, may help reduce mosquito populations via the establishment of population sinks, characterized by high rates of oviposition coupled with high levels of larval mortality.  相似文献

In vitro culture plants of Typhonium flagelliforme were found to decolorize a variety of dyes, including Malachite Green, Red HE 8B, Methyl Orange, Reactive Red 2, Direct Red 5B (DR5B), Red HE 7B, Golden Yellow HER, Patent Blue, and Brilliant Blue R (BBR), to varying extents within 4 days. The enzymatic analysis of plant roots of aseptically raised plantlets performed before and after degradation of the dye BBR by these plantlets showed a significant induction in the activities of peroxidase, laccase, tyrosinase, and 2,6-dichlorophenol-indophenol reductase, which indicated the involvement of these enzymes in the metabolism of the dye. Comparative study of the enzyme status of the plants Typhonium flagelliforme and Blumea malcolmii during the degradation of DR5B and BBR showed marked variations in the enzyme profile with respect to the use of different sources of the enzyme. Phytoremediation of BBR using Typhonium flagelliforme was confirmed with high performance liquid chromatography and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis performed before and after the degradation of the dye. One of the products of the metabolism of the dye was identified as 4-(4-ethylimino-cyclohexa-2,5-dienylidinemethyl)-phenylamine with the aid of gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy (GC–MS) analysis. Significant decrease in the American Dye Manufacturer’s Institute, biological oxygen demand, and chemical oxygen demand values of synthetic mixture of textile dyes and industrial effluent confirmed the decolorization and detoxification. Phytotoxicity studies also revealed the nontoxic nature of the metabolites of BBR.  相似文献

Potato yellow dwarf virus (PYDV) and Sonchus yellow net virus (SYNV) belong to the genus Nucleorhabdovirus. These viruses replicate in nuclei of infected cells and mature virions accumulate in the perinuclear space after budding through the inner nuclear membrane. Infection of transgenic Nicotiana benthamiana 16c plants (which constitutively express green fluorescent protein (GFP) targeted to endomembranes) with PYDV or SYNV resulted in virus-specific patterns of accumulation of both GFP and membranes within nuclei. Using immunolocalization and a lipophilic fluorescent dye, we show that the sites of the relocalized membranes were coincident with foci of accumulation of the SYNV nucleocapsid protein. In contrast to the effects of PYDV and SYNV, inoculation of 16c plants with plus-strand RNA viruses did not result in accumulation of intranuclear GFP. Instead, such infections resulted in accumulation of GFP around nuclei, in a manner consistent with proliferation of the endoplasmic reticulum. We propose that the relocalization of GFP in 16c plants can be used to study sites of rhabdovirus accumulation in live cells. This study is the first to use live-cell imaging to characterize the effects of rhabdoviruses on plant nuclear membranes.  相似文献
