In the present study, the serum and hair levels of zinc, selenium, and copper were determined in children with iron-deficiency
anemia (IDA). A total of 52 anemic children aged 1–4 yr constituted the study group. Fortysix healthy children acted as controls.
The copper and zinc levels were measured with an atomic absorption spectrophometer. Serum and hair selenium was determined
by a spectroflourometric method. The serum zinc and selenium concentrations in the IDA group were found to be significantly
lower and serum copper significantly higher than those in the controls (p<0.05). Lower iron, zinc, and selenium concentrations (p<0.001) but not copper were found in hair (p>0.05). 相似文献

The Cu and Zn levels of both 607 men (1–85 y old) and 649 women (1–92 y old) were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry.
Sex does not influence Cu (14.89±0.89 μg/g and 15.26±0.79 μg/g hair for males and females, respectively) and Zn contents (200.97±9.68
μg/g for men and 209.81±9.49 μg/g hair for women). Age influences Cu and Zn concentrations, but only significantly in females:
Cu levels decrease over 60 y of age; whereas Zn levels increase significantly from age groups 2–5 to 20–40 years. Hair color
influences Cu concentrations in both males and females. In males, white hair containes less Cu than black hair; in females,
white hair's Cu levels are significantly lower than those of dark blond, red, light brown, and brown hair. There are no significant
differences in Zn concentrations with respect to different hair colors, in either males or females. 相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine Se, Zn, and Cu concentrations in blood plasma and milk of lactating women from central
Poland who were in different stages of lactation and to investigate the relationship between the content of trace elements
in mothers’ blood and concentrations of microelements in their milk. Se and Zn concentrations in blood plasma of mothers were
the lowest and Cu was the highest on the first 4 d of lactation (colostrum, n=43) and were found to be 34.9±11.8 μg/L, 0.51±0.13 mg/L, and 1.70±0.55 mg/L, respectively. The highest plasma level of Se
and Zn and the lowest content of Cu could be observed between d 10 and 30 of lactation (mature milk, n=41), and were found to be 54.3±14.6 μg/L for Se (p<0.001), 0.76±0.20 mg/L for Zn (p<0.001), and 1.03±0.30 mg/L (p<0.001) for Cu.
The results of Se, Zn, and Cu determination in breast milk samples demonstrate a pattern of decline in their concentration
with advancing stages of lactation. We found out that Se, Zn, and Cu concentrations were the highest in colostrum (n=43) and amounted to 24.8±10.1 μg/L, 8.2±2.8 mg/L, and 0.45±0.11 mg/L, respectively. The content of all determined microelements
declined significantly during the time of lactation. Statistically significant linear correlation was found between concentrations
of Zn in blood plasma and milk in the first stage of lactation. Weak but statistically significant linear correlations were
also found between plasma Se content in plasma and in transitional and mature milk of breast-feeding women. 相似文献

The concentration of zinc, copper, selenium, albumin, and ceruloplasmin in blood plasma and the activity of superoxide dismutase
and glutathione peroxidase in erythrocytes were determined in a set of patients with idiopathic scoliosis (n=51). A significant decrease of selenium concentration (0.50±0.16 μmol/L) was found when compared with a control group (0.69±0.07
μmol/L) (p<0.01). The same levels of significance were found out for selenium levels corrected for albumin content. In a group of patients
with a curvature over 45° indicated for a surgical correction, the average plasma concentrations of selenium were significantly
lower (p<0.05) in comparison with a group of patients with a curvature below 45° treated conservatively.
The GSH-Px activity in erythrocytes was the same in both sets. In comparison with the controls, no significant differences
were revealed in all of the other parameters. The detection of the decreased blood plasma concentration of selenium has suggested
possible disturbance of well-proportioned distribution and of general optimal availability of selenium in the organism of
patients with idiopathic scoliosis with likely effects on the process of synthesis and maturation of collagen affecting the

Hair zinc and copper: Relationship to hair type and serum concentrations in children and adolescents
The zinc and copper serum and hair concentrations of 691 3-18-y-old girls and boys previously determined as a part of the
Multicentre Study of Atherosclerosis Precursors in Finnish Children and Adolescents were further analyzed in order to find
a possible association between these two zinc and copper indices. The influence of hair color and the diameter of individual
hair strands on hair concentrations were studied by the analysis of covariance. Hair color and serum zinc concentrations were
found to be associated with hair zinc concentrations in boys. Such an association was not found for zinc and copper concentrations
in girls. Hair vs serum concentrations in different age and hair color groups did not show however, a significant relationship
either in copper or in zinc concentrations. The subjects with very low or high serum zinc or copper concentrations did not
usually have extreme hair concentrations and vice versa. However, there were some subjects with low or high serum concentrations

We examined serum copper (Cu), serum zinc (Zn), and the serum copper/zinc ratio (Cu/Zn) in 162 patients. All of them were
seen to have an abnormal shadow in the chest X-ray films, that is, 109 patients with lung cancer (LC) and 53 patients with
no lung cancer (NLC). The mean Cu and Cu/Zn in LC patients were significantly higher than those in NLC patients (p<0.05). In LC patients, Cu and Cu/Zn were higher and Zn was lower in advanced tumors than early ones. There was a significantly
clear relation between Cu or Cu/Zn and the tumor (T) stages. When the relative risk (RR) of LC was estimated, it was seen
that the higher Cu and Cu/Zn became, the higher RR became. Furthermore, we showed the sensitivity of the receiver operator
characteristic of the test (ROC) curve for Cu, Cu/Zn, and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) to diagnose LC, as explained in a
paragraph of methods.The determinations of Cu, Zn, and Cu/Zn are simple and inexpensive. They also appear to have a great diagnostic value in determining the local invasion of LC and as a screening test in the

Plasma selenium and glutathione peroxidase in erythrocytes were analyzed in a case-control study encompassing 441 cases with
breast cancer and 191 controls with benign breast disease. No difference in mean serum selenium level between cases and controls
on supplementary selenium intake was seen. If only individuals without supplementary intake, 278 cases and 135 controls, were
considered a preventive effect was found increasing with selenium level. This finding was significant among women 50 years
old or more with Mantel-Haenszel odds ratio=0.16 for individuals with serum selenium >1.21 μmol/L. Also for subjects with
serum selenium in the range 1.00–1.21 μmol/L a significant preventive effect was seen with odds ratio=0.38. For women under
50 years of age a nonsignificant preventive effect was seen. Glutathione peroxidase in erythrocytes did not correlate well
with serum selenium and was not a marker for the risk of breast cancer. 相似文献

Postpartum scalp hair samples from 82 term-pregnancy mother/neonate pairs were analyzed for their concentration of zinc (Zn),
copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb), using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Maternal and neonatal Zn concentrations
had geometric means (and 99% confidence intervals) of 122.5 μg/g (117.9–131.5 μg/g) and 146.9 μg (141.5–156.7 μg/g) respectively.
Corresponding Cu values were 18.4 μg/g (17.6–23.8 μg/g) and 6.7 μg/g (6.3–7.6 μg/g). Those of Cd were 0.49 μg/g (0.47–0.69
μg/g) in the mothers and 0.57 μg/g (0.55–0.86 μg/g) in the neonates. For Pb, they were 7.95 μg/g (7.60–9.32 μg/g) and 4.56
μg/g (4.39–5.56 μg/g). Cigaret smoking, despite its relatively low prevalence (19.5%), was associated with lower Zn and higher
Cd and Pb concentrations and in lower Zn/Cd and Zn/Pb molar concentration ratios. Smoking also altered interelemental relationships,
particularly those of Zn with Cd and Pb and those between Cd and Pb. Smoking frequency appeared to show negative dose-response
effects on maternal and neonatal Zn concentrations, Zn/Pb molar concentration ratios, and birth weight. Mothers with a history
of oral contraceptive (OC) usage had significantly higher Cu concentrations and lower Zn/Cu molar concentration ratios than
nonusers, with the highest Cu concentrations and lowest Zn/Cu values being associated with third-generation OCs. No similar
effects were elicited in the respective neonatal Cu concentrations. Neither alcohol consumption nor prenatal supplementation
with iron and/or folic acid had discernible effects on the maternal or neonatal elemental concentrations. The data from this
study suggest that in a given population of term-pregnancy mothers and neonates, significant interindividual variations in
hair trace element concentrations can occur, irrespective of commonality of general environment, and that lifestyle factors,
including cigaret smoking and OC usage history, can be significant contributory factors to such variations. The data are discussed
in relation to the effects of smoking-associated exposure to Cd and Pb exposure on Zn availability for placental transfer,
as well as on the quantitative maternal Zn supply levels to the fetus resulting from the known tendency of smokers to have
lower dietary intakes of Zn. The higher Cu concentrations in OC users are discussed in relation to altered Cu metabolism,
characterized by increased synthesis of the Cu-binding protein, ceruloplasmin, as an acute-phase antioxidant response to altered

Obesity is among the main contributing factors in the etiology of essential hypertension (EHT). Leptin, the product of the
ob gene, is expressed mainly in adipose tissue. We examined the relationship between two trace elements, zinc (Zn) and copper
(Cu), and leptin in patients with EHT (n=35) and normotensive (NT) controls (n=50) because leptin as well as Zn and Cu were reported to be associated with the pathophysiology of EHT. Plasma leptin levels
were determined with a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was utilized
to determine plasma Zn and Cu levels. There was a negative correlation between leptin and Zn, and the Zn/Cu ratio (r=−0.359, p<0.05; r=0.361, p<0.05, respectively) in pooled subjects. When subjects were divided based on the presence or absence of hypertension, there
was a negative correlation between leptin and Zn (r=−0.375, p<0.05) as well as leptin and Zn/Cu ratio (r=−0.398, p<0.05) in NT subjects. Similar trends were observed when leptin/BMI (body mass index) levels were utilized. There was no significant
correlations between levels of Cu and leptin or leptin/BMI. In conclusion, in addition to high leptin levels, Zn and the Zn/Cu
ratio were lower in patients with EHT compared to NT controls. 相似文献

The aim of the present study is to evaluate the status of plasma essential trace elements selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), copper
(Cu), and iron (Fe) concentrations and their related acute-phase proteins, ceruloplasmin (Cp), ferritin, transferrin (Tf),
and albumin levels in patients with vivax malaria. Plasma Cu and Zn concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry
(AAS). Se concentrations were determined by graphite furnace AAS. Fe, Cp, Tf, and albumin levels were determined by colorimetric
methods. Plasma Se, Fe, and albumin levels were found to be significantly lower (p<0.01, p<0.001, and p<0.05, respectively) and Cu, Cp, and ferritin levels and Cu/Zn ratios were significantly higher (p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001, and p<0.05, respectively) in patients when compared with those of healthy subjects. Plasma, Tf, and Zn levels were not found to
be significantly different (p>0.05) in patients and controls. There were positive important correlations between Cu and Cp (r=0.908, p<0.001), Zn and albumin (r=0.633, p<0.001), and negative correlations between Fe and ferritin content (r=−0.521, p<0.05) and Fe and Tf (r=−0.616, p<0.01) in the patients group. Our findings demonstrated that plasma essential trace elements Se, Cu, and Fe change, but these
changes might be dependent on acute-phase proteins, which were regulated as a part of defense strategies of the organism,

Several studies have shown that plasma copper concentrations are increased in various carcinomas. Zinc acts as a cellular
growth protector, including growth of neoplastic cells, and its deficiency was demonstrated to be involved in several stages
of malignant transformation. However, the usefulness of the serum zinc and copper determinations in cancer prevention, detection,
monitoring treatment, and prognosis requires further investigations. The aim of the present study was to compare the serum
copper and zinc levels in patients with cancer of the lung (PC), breast (BC), gastrointestinal tract (GIC), and gynecological
(GYNC) malignancy with progress of the disease. The results of the study have shown a significant increase in the mean total
serum Cu levels and the serum Cu/Zn ratio in all patient groups with cancer compared to a control group. Increased mean serum
concentrations and Cu/Zn ratios were found in the whole group (ALLC), and for the GIC and GYNC groups with local as well as
metastasized (Meta) disease in comparison with the control group. The mean serum concentrations of Zn were decreased only

The lead, copper, zinc, and magnesium levels of scalp hair taken from 153 children aged 1–15 yr and young people (16–18 yr)
with selected neurological disorders (hyperexcibility, loss of consciousness, and epileptiform convulsions of an unknown origin,
etc.), were measured using the atomic absorption spectrometry method and then compared with a control group of healthy children
(n=108). The research indicated significantly reduced mean levels of magnesium in the hair of children suffering from selected
neurological diseases (in children aged 11–15 yr of age, above 30%; up to 5 yr of age, nearly 30%; the differences were statistically
significant at p<0.05) and slightly decreased mean levels of copper (differences statistically significant at p<0.05, particularly in the 11 to 15-yr category). Differences in zinc levels in hair were inconsiderable (not statistically
significant in any age groups). The lead level in the hair of the above-mentioned group of children was exceeded in relation
to the control group (a statistically significant difference at p<0.05 for the total group). A more than twofold decrease in the mean value of the Mg/Pb ratio (and a nearly 30% decrease in
the value of the Mg/Zn ratio) in the hair of children suffering from neurological diseases suggests that the high toxicity
of lead accompanying, among other things, magnesium deficiencies might be a cause of the observed disorders in children. 相似文献

Chronic alcoholics frequently show associated malnutrition. Both ethanol and malnutrition exert profound changes on zinc and
copper metabolism. In this study, we found higher hair zinc and copper values in 43 male alcoholics than in 39 controls. Hair
copper was significantly related to the amount of ethanol consumed, whereas hair zinc was higher in consumers of distilled
beverages. No relation was observed between hair zinc and copper and nutritional status, kind of diet consumed, style of life,
and liver cirrhosis. Consequently, hair zinc and copper levels are related only with alcohol intake. 相似文献

BackgroundSelenium is important for human health and involved in various metabolic processes. Deficiency of selenium associates with increased risk for cancer and cardiovascular diseases. There has been an increase use of selenium supplements for the treatment of autoimmune thyroid conditions. However, the potential biological effects of selenium overload arouse the public concern. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations of plasma selenium concentrations of adults with metabolic syndrome (MS) in Chinese population.MethodsA matched case-control study including 204 metabolic syndrome patients and 204 healthy controls was conducted in 2012. The MS cases were defined according to the criteria of Chinese Diabetes Society (CDS). Healthy controls without abnormality of metabolic components were matched with cases in age, gender and region. Plasma concentrations of selenium were determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). Fasting plasma glucose (FPG), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) were detected by automatic biochemical analyzer.ResultsThe median levels of plasma selenium in MS group were 146.3 (107.3–199.4) μg/L, which were significantly higher than that in the control group (127.4: 95.7–176.0) μg/L; Plasma levels of selenium were related to the risk of MS in dose-response manner. Risk of MS was significantly higher in subjects with plasma selenium in the highest tertile (T3: ≥176.0 μg/L) compared to those in the lowest tertile (T1: <95.7 μg/L) [odds ratio (OR) = 2.416 (95% CI: 1.289–4.526)]. The plasma levels of selenium were positively correlated with fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (rs = 0.268, P < 0.001). Plasma selenium at the median (T2: 95.7–176.0 μg/L) or upper tertile (T3: ≥176.0 μg/L) was associated with increased risk of elevated FPG (defined by FPG ≥ 6.1 mmol/L) as compared with the lowest tertile (T1: ≤95.7 μg/L) [T2 vs. T1, OR = 3.487 (1.738–6.996); T3 vs. T1, OR = 6.245 (3.005–12.981)].ConclusionsHigher levels of plasma selenium might increase the risk of metabolic syndrome and elevated fasting plasma glucose. In recent years, a great number of studies have investigated the possible role of trace elements in the etiology and pathogenesis
of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoartritis (OA). We studied synovial fluid and plasma concentrations of selenium (Se),
zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and iron (Fe) in patients with RA and OA and compared them with sex- and age-matched healthy subjects.
Plasma albumin levels were measured as an index of nutritional status. Plasma Se, Cu, and Zn concentrations were determined
by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and Fe concentrations were determined by the colorimetric method. Although plasma and
synovial fluid Se concentration were found to be significantly lower (p<0.05, and p<0.05, respectively), Cu concentrations were significantly higher in patients with RA than those of healthy subjects and OA
(p<0.05 and p<0.05, respectively). There were no significant differences in plasma and synovial fluid Zn concentrations and albumin levels
among three groups (p>0.05). On the other hand, synovial fluid Cu and Fe concentrations were significantly higher in patients with OA than those
of healthy subjects (p<0.05). There was a significantly positive correlation between synovial fluid Se−Cu values and Zn−Fe values in patients with
RA. Our results showed that synovial fluid and plasma trace element concentrations, excluding Zn, change in inflammatory RA,
but not in OA. These alterations in trace element concentrations in inflammatory Ra might be a result on the changes of the

The aim of this study was to (1) estimate the concentration of selenium in the plasma of 146 residents (65 men and 81 women)
and in the hair of 34 persons from the Gdańsk region in northern Poland, aged 19–70 and (2) compare the obtained results with
data corresponding to healthy populations living in different European countries. Selenium in plasma was determined by atomic
absorption spectrometry using the hydride generation method. The mean selenium concentration in plasma of the investigated
persons was 73.3 ± 14.1 μg/L, 76.7 ± 13.2 μg/L in men, and 70.4 ± 14.7 μg/L in women. No age — dependent differences in plasma
selenium were found in the investigated population. In 20% of the investigated persons, the selenium level in plasma was lower
than 60 μg/L. The mean selenium concentration in hair was 0.30 ± 0.11 μg/g. A positive, statistically significant correlation
between selenium concentrations in the plasma and hair of the investigated persons was found. The obtained results indicate
that the selenium level in significant part of this population is suboptimal and should be elevated by supplementation with

Plasma zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and magnesium (Mg) concentrations, copper/zinc ratio, and selenium (Se) status were studied
in 44 vegetarians (22 males and 22 females) and their age- and sex-matched nonvegetarians in the Bratislava region (Slovakia).
Vegetarians had statistically significant lower levels of plasma Zn and Cu than nonvegetarians, which may be the result of
lower bioavailability of Zn and Cu from this type of diet. No differences in plasma Mg levels were found between vegetarians
and nonvegetarians.
Se status, as expressed by plasma and erythrocyte concentrations and plasma and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activities
(GPx), was significantly lower in vegetarians when compared to nonvegetarians. In the series as a whole, there were significantly
higher correlations between plasma and erythrocyte Se concentrations and between plasma and erythrocyte GPx activities. Significant
positive correlations were also found between plasma Se concentrations and erythrocyte GPx activities, and between erythrocyte
Se concentrations and erythrocyte GPx activities.
A vegetarian diet does not provide a sufficient supply of essential antioxidant trace elements, like Zn, Cu, and especially
Se. Se supplementation should be recommended to this risk group of the population. 相似文献

This article describes a study in which four trace elements (Se, Mn, Cu, and Fe) were analyzed in the blood serum of the patients
with colorectal cancer from the Moravian region of the Czech Republic. Atomic absorption spectrometry with graphite furnace
atomization was used for analysis of selenium and manganese and with flame atomization for analysis of copper and iron. The
observed serum concentrations in adenocarcinoma colorectal patients of selenium were significantly lower (41.8 ± 11.6 μg/L)
and those of manganese (16.3 ± 4.5 μg/L) and iron (2.89 ± 1.23 mg/L) were significantly higher as compared to the age-matched
control group. Copper serum content (0.95 ± 0.28 mg/L) did not significantly differ as compared to healthy population. 相似文献

Breast cancer is a global public health problem and the most frequent cause of cancer death among women. Mammary carcinogenesis is driven not only by genetic alterations but also by epigenetic disturbances. Because epigenetic marks are potentially reversible they represent promising molecular targets for breast cancer prevention interventions. Selenium is a promising anti-breast cancer trace element that has shown the modulation of DNA methylation and histone post-translational modifications in other malignancies. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of selenium compounds [methylseleninic acid (MSA) and selenite] on cell proliferation and death, expression of the tumor suppressor gene RASSF1A and epigenetic marks in MCF-7 human breast adenocarcinoma cells. Treatment with MSA or selenite markedly inhibited (P < 0.05) in a dose-dependent manner the proliferation of MCF-7 cells. MSA induced (P < 0.05) G2/M cell arrest while selenite presented the opposite effect. Regarding cell death induction, MSA acted mainly by inducing apoptosis (P < 0.05), while selenite only induced necrosis (P < 0.05). Furthermore selenite, but not MSA, markedly induced (P < 0.05) cytotoxicity and increased (P < 0.05) RASSF1A expression. Both selenium compounds inhibited (P < 0.05) DNMT1 expression. MSA decreased (P < 0.05) H3K9me3 and increased (P < 0.05) H4K16ac, while selenite decreased (P < 0.05) this latter histone mark. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report showing that selenite and MSA modulate epigenetic marks specifically in breast cancer cells. Our data reinforce the anti-breast cancer potential of selenium that is dependent on its chemical form. Furthermore the data show that epigenetic mechanisms represent relevant molecular targets involved in selenium inhibitory effects in breast cancer cells. 相似文献

complication of pregnancy, however, remains unknown. We studied the relationship between maternal leukocyte selenium, zinc,
and copper concentrations and the risk of preeclampsia in a large hospital-based case-control study. One hundred seventy-one
women with proteinuric pregnancy-induced hypertension (with or without seizures) comprised the case group. Controls were 184
normotensive pregnant women. Leukocytes were separated from blood samples collected during the patients’ postpartum labor
and delivery admission. Leukocyte concentrations for the three cations were measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry
(ICP-MS). Concentrations for each cation were reported as micrograms per gram of total protein. Women with preeclampsia had
significantly higher median leukocyte selenium concentrations than normotensive controls (3.23 vs 2.80 μg/g total protein,
p<0.0001). Median leukocyte zinc concentrations were 31% higher in preeclamptics as compared with controls (179.15 vs 136.44
μg/g total protein, p<0.0001). Although median leukocyte copper concentrations were slightly higher for cases than controls, this difference did
not reach statistical significance (17.72 vs 17.00 μg/g total protein, p=0.468). There was evidence of a linear increase in risk of preeclampsia with increasing concentrations of selenium and zinc.
The relative risk for preeclampsia was 3.38 (adjusted odds ratio [OR]=3.38, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.53–7.54) among
women in the highest quartile of the control selenium distribution compared with women in the lowest quartile. The corresponding
relative risk and 95% CI for preeclampsia was 5.30 (2.45–11.44) for women in the highest quartile of the control zinc distribution
compared with women in the lowest quartile. There was no clear pattern of a linear trend in risk with increasing concentration
of leukocyte copper concentrations (adjusted for linear trend in risk =0.299). Our results are consistent with some previous
reports. Prospective studies are needed to determine whether observed alterations in selenium and zinc concentrations precede
preeclampsia or whether the differences may be attributed to preeclampsia-related alterations in maternal and fetal-placental
trace metal metabolism. 相似文献
