The ultraviolet (UV) absorbance of the mucus of a Great Barrier Reef damselfish Pomacentrus amboinensis was investigated with regard to ontogeny and time spent in captivity. The UV absorbance of P. amboinensis mucus increased with fish size and decreased with time spent in captivity. The wavelength of maximum absorbance of the mucus did not change with fish size, but shifted towards shorter wavelengths with increasing time spent in captivity. The UV absorbance of the mucus of fish with 'fin rot' was compared to that of similar healthy individuals, and a significant decrease in UV absorbance of unhealthy fish mucus was detected; no wavelength shifting occurred. Pomacentrus amboinensis appears to sequester mycosporine-like amino acids from the diet in order to protect epithelial tissues from UV damage, and decreases in UV absorbance in captive fish were probably due to insufficient dietary availability.  相似文献

The Brilon-reef complex is one of the biggest Devonian carbonate buildups (~80 km2) of the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge. The Burgberg section is located in the southeastern fore-reef area of the Brilon Reef Complex and exposes a succession of strata (117 m thick), which extends from the Middle Givetian (middle varcus conodont Zone) to the Viséan (bilineatus conodont Zone). Field and microfacies observations led to the definition of nine microfacies that are integrated into a sedimentary model divided into off-reef, intermediate fore-reef, and proximal fore-reef sedimentary domains (SD). The off-reef domain (SD1) is the most distal setting observed and is characterized by fine-grained sediments, dominated by pelagic biota and the local occurrence of gravity-flow deposits. The intermediate fore-reef (SD2) is characterized by a mixture of biota and sediments coming from both deeper-water and shallow-water sources and is influenced by storm and gravity-flow currents. In this domain, Renalcis mound-like structures developed locally. Finally, the proximal fore-reef (SD3) corresponds to the most proximal setting that is strongly influenced by gravity-flow currents derived from the Brilon Reef Complex. The temporal evolution of microfacies in the fore-reef setting of the Burgberg section show five main paleoenvironmental trends influenced by the onset, general development, and demise/drowning of the Brilon Reef Complex. Fore-reef to off-reef lithologies and their temporal changes are from the base to the top of the section: (U1)—fine-grained sediments with large reef debris, corresponding to the initial development of the reef building upon submarine volcaniclastic deposits during the Middle Givetian (middle varcus Zone) and first export of reef debris in the fore-reef setting; (U2)—high increase of reef-derived material in the fore-reef area, corresponding to a significant progradation of the reef from the Middle Givetian to the Early Frasnian (maximum extension of the Brilon Reef Complex to the south, disparilis to the falsiovalis conodont biozones); (U3)—progressive decrease of shallow-water derived material and increase of fine-grained sediments and deep-water biota into the fore-reef setting, corresponding to the stepwise withdrawal of the reef influence; from the Middle to the Late Frasnian (jamieae conodont Zone); (U4)—development of a submarine rise characterized by nodular and cephalopod-bearing limestones extending from the Late Frasnian to the Late Famennian corresponding to the demise and drowning of the Brilon Reef Complex as a result of the Late Frasnian Kellwasser events (upper rhenana and triangularis conodont biozones); (U5)—significant deepening of the Burgberg area starting in the Late Famennian, directly followed by an aggrading trend marked by pelagic shales overlying the nodular limestone deposits.  相似文献

Monitoring daily activity patterns of animals in the field and in captivity often revealed different results. For example, Syrian hamsters Mesocricetus auratus showed diurnal surface activity in the field, but nocturnal patterns in the laboratory. The aim of our study was to monitor the field activity of a close relative of this species, the Ciscaucasian hamster Mesocricetus raddei from Dagestan. Using the radio-frequency identification (RFID) technique we were able to obtain field data from 20 Ciscaucasian hamsters. In contrast to the data obtained in captivity where the Ciscaucasian hamsters were active mainly at night, they showed a diurnal activity pattern in the field, i.e. animals were observed on surface between sunrise and sunset. Discussing the putative causes of the different activity patterns, we are focusing especially on ecological constraints and advantages. Also, we stress the necessity of more field observations.  相似文献

Most studies on animal physiology and behaviour are conducted in captivity without verification that data are representative of free-ranging animals. We provide the first quantitative comparison of daily torpor, thermal biology and activity patterns, conducted on two groups of sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps, Marsupialia) exposed to similar thermal conditions, one in captivity and the other in the field. Our study shows that activity in captive gliders in an outdoor aviary is restricted to the night and largely unaffected by weather, whereas free-ranging gliders omit foraging on cold/wet nights and may also forage in the afternoon. Torpor occurrence in gliders was significantly lower in captivity (8.4% after food deprivation; 1.1% for all observations) than in the field (25.9%), mean torpor bout duration was shorter in captivity (6.9 h) than in the field (13.1 h), and mean body temperatures during torpor were higher in captivity (25.3°C) than in the field (19.6°C). Moreover, normothermic body temperature as a function of air temperature differed between captive and free-ranging gliders, with a >3°C difference at low air temperatures. Our comparison shows that activity patterns, thermal physiology, use of torpor and patterns of torpor may differ substantially between the laboratory and field, and provides further evidence that functional and behavioural data on captive individuals may not necessarily be representative of those living in the wild.  相似文献

The tendency of juvenile and adult field-trapped Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) to exhibit self-induced food deprivation in response to changes in their living environment was studied after different periods of residency in the laboratory environment. Self-imposed food deprivation resulting from the forced occupation of a novel environment (activity wheels) was greater for those animals tested immediately upon capture and after 25 weeks in captivity than for rats in captivity for 4 weeks. The deprivation response of juveniles was less than for adults immediately following capture but after 25 weeks in captivity the responses of the two age groups were similar. Deprivation responses following reintroduction to the home cage environment diminished over time in captivity. Wheel-running by adults was greatest immediately following capture whereas juveniles continued to show relatively high levels of wheel-running at 4 weeks in captivity. The results are discussed in terms of habituation to the laboratory environment and time-dependent changes in response to novelty.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of fishing on the behavior and abundance of the cleaner fish Labroides dimidiatus on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, by comparing cleaner fish density (underwater visual census) and behavior (focal animal observations) at a fished and a no-take site. Cleaner fish density, as well as the number of individuals and species cleaned, did not differ significantly between sites; however, L. dimidiatus spent more time interacting (physical contact involving feeding bites) with individual clients at the no-take site, indicating that fishing can indirectly affect mutualistic interactions on tropical reefs.  相似文献

The simultaneous effects of grazing and nutrient enrichment on macroalgal communities were experimentally investigated using plastic mesh enclosure/exclosure cages along a natural nutrient (DIN, SRP) gradient from the discharge of a tidal mangrove creek on the west side of Norman's Pond Cay, Exumas Cays, Bahamas. Nutrient enrichment was the only factor affecting total biomass of macroalgae whereas selective herbivory moderated species composition. Biomass ranged from >2 kg dry weight m−2 at the DIN-enriched Waterfall to <600 g dry weight m−2 in the DIN-limited Algal Halo. Grazing by the queen conch Strombus gigas and the sea hare Aplysia dactylomela significantly reduced biomass of the epiphyte Laurencia intricata, but not its host Digenea simplex at the DIN-enriched Waterfall. These two rhodophytes dominated the macroalgal community at the DIN-enriched Waterfall and inner Algal Halo, whereas the chlorophytes Microdictyon marinum and Cladophora catenata dominated the relatively DIN-depleted outer Algal Halo. Higher grazing rates by S. gigas, A. dactylomela, and juvenile parrotfish and surgeonfish at the DIN-enriched Waterfall compared to the more oligotrophic Algal Halo suggested selective grazing on higher quality (nitrogen) diets by these herbivores. A pronounced increase in the carbon/nitrogen (C:N) ratios of D. simplex and L. intricata from the Waterfall to the Algal Halo indicated increased DIN-limitation of growth in the more offshore, lower DIN macroalgal communities. In contrast, only modest increases in C:N ratios of M. marinum and C. catenata between the Waterfall and Algal Halo suggested that these species are better adapted to growth in reef environments with lower levels of DIN enrichment. Low coral cover (<2%) co-occurred with high macroalgal cover (>35%) at DIN-enriched reef sites around Norman's Pond Cay (Waterfall, Patch Reef, North Perry Reef) compared to relatively high coral cover (10-20%) and low macroalgal cover (<20%) at the lower DIN reef sites (Rainbow Reef, Lang's Reef). These results support ecological theory that bottom-up control via nutrient enrichment is a primary factor regulating overall biomass and taxonomic assemblages of macroalgae on coral reefs, whereas grazing is more important in controlling relative species composition via dietary preferences.  相似文献

Blood flukes of the family Spirorchiidae Stunkard, 1921 are significant pathogens of marine turtles, both in the wild and in captivity. Despite causing considerable disease and mortality, little is known about the life cycles of marine species, with just four reports globally. No complete life cycle has been elucidated for any named species of marine spirorchiid, but the group is reported to use vermetid and fissurellid gastropods, and terebelliform polychaetes as intermediate hosts. Here we report molecular evidence that nine related spirorchiid species infect vermetid gastropods as first intermediate hosts from four localities along the coast of Queensland, Australia. ITS2 rDNA and cox1 mtDNA sequence data generated from vermetid infections provides the first definitive identifications for the intermediate hosts for the four species of Hapalotrema Looss, 1899 and Learedius learedi Price, 1934. Additionally, we provide a new locality report for larval stages of Amphiorchis sp., and evidence of three additional unidentified spirorchiid species in Australian waters. Based on the wealth of infections from vermetids during this study, we conclude that the previous preliminary report of a fissurellid limpet as the intermediate host for L. learedi was likely mistaken. The nine species found infecting vermetids during this study form a strongly supported clade exclusive of species of the other two marine spirorchiid genera for which sequence data are available; Carettacola Manter & Larson, 1950 which falls sister to the vermetid-infecting clade + a small clade of freshwater spirorchiids, and Neospirorchis Price, 1934 which is distantly related to the vermetid-infecting clade. We provide further evidence that spirorchiid transmission can occur in closed system aquaria and show that spirorchiid transmission occurs at both an important turtle rookery (Heron Island, southern Great Barrier Reef, Australia) and foraging ground (Moreton Bay, Australia). We discuss the implications of our findings for the epidemiology of the disease, control in captivity, and the evolution of vermetid exploitation by the Spirorchiidae.  相似文献

The photosynthetic performance, pigmentation and response to nutrient enrichment of a Dictyota community were studied over a 32 m depth gradient on Conch Reef, Florida Keys, USA. Dictyota spp. was the dominant space occupier on Conch Reef. During summer months from 1994 to 2001, mean percent cover was 43% at 7 and 21 m depths. Percent cover of Dictyota spp. was markedly lower at 32 m relative to shallower sites. The metabolism of Dictyota menstrualis and Dictyota pulchella were negatively impacted by attenuation of irradiance with increased depth such that ETRmax and P/R ratio decreased by 85% and 47%, respectively in samples from 7 to 32 m. Decreased cover of Dicytota spp. at 32 m relative to shallower sites may be the result of the inability of this species complex to acclimate to low irradiance levels as indicated by a lack of change in α and photosynthetic pigment content with increased depth.The response of D. menstrualis populations on Conch Reef to nutrient enrichment was variable. During August 2000, a natural enrichment experiment was conducted as D. menstrualis photosynthetic performance was surveyed both during and for days after a period of cool, nutrient-rich internal tidal bores bathed the 21 m site. No changes in in situ photosynthetic performance were observed either during or for 2 to 4 days after this natural event suggesting no nutrient limitation. In August 2001, a manipulative nutrient enrichment experiment was conducted with D. menstrualis from 7, 21 and 32 m. Increases in ΦII were found in individuals exposed to nutrient enrichment from all depths, indicating at that time D. menstrualis was nutrient-limited on Conch Reef. Variation in the physiological response to nutrient enrichment may be the result of the frequency of internal tidal bores on Conch Reef in the months prior to our experiments. Variation in the responses by Dictyota spp. to irradiance and nutrient enrichment suggests that long-term monitoring over relevant temporal and spatial scales is necessary to accurately characterize limits on productivity and spread of this weedy species assemblage.  相似文献

Wild animals and captives display physiological and behavioral differences, and it has been hypothesized, but rarely tested, that these differences are caused by sustained elevation of the hormone corticosterone. We used repeated computed tomography (CT) imaging to examine body composition changes in breeding male and female wild house sparrows (Passer domesticus; n = 20) in response to two weeks of captivity, and assessed behavioral changes using video recordings. Half of the birds received the drug mitotane, which significantly decreased stress-induced corticosterone titers compared to controls. Based on the CT images, fat volumes increased, and pectoralis muscle density and heart and testes volumes decreased, over the two weeks of captivity in both groups of birds. However, beak-wiping, a behavior that can indicate anxiety and aggression, showed increased occurrence in controls compared to mitotane-treated birds. While our results do not support the hypothesis that these body composition changes were primarily driven by stress-induced corticosterone, our data suggest that experimentally reducing stress-induced corticosterone may mitigate some captivity-induced behavioral changes. Broadly, our results emphasize that researchers should take behavioral and physiological differences between free-living animals and captives into consideration when designing studies and interpreting results. Further, time in captivity should be minimized when birds will be reintroduced back to the wild.  相似文献

Glucocorticoid steroids modulate immunocompetence in complex ways with both immunoenhancing and immunosuppressive effects in vertebrates exposed to different stressors. Such bimodal effects have been associated with variation in duration and intensity of the stress response. Given that natural populations have been exposed to a multitude of stressors, a better understanding of the functional association between duration and intensity of the stress response, the resulting changes in glucocorticoid plasma levels and their impact on different aspects of immunocompetence emerges as a cornerstone for vertebrate conservation strategies. We investigated the effects of a restraint challenge (with and without movement restriction), long-term captivity, and transdermal corticosterone application on plasma levels of corticosterone (hereinafter referred to as CORT) and different parameters of innate immunocompetence in the male cururu toads (Rhinella icterica). We show that for R. icterica restraint for 24h proved to be a stressful condition, increasing CORT by 3-fold without consistent immunological changes. However, the application of a more intense stressor (restraint with movement restriction), for the same period, potentiated this response resulting in a 9-fold increase in CORT, associated with increase Neutrophil/Lymphocyte ratio (N:L) and a lower bacterial killing ability (BKA). Transdermal application of corticosterone efficiently mimics repeated acute stress response events, without changing the immune parameters even after 13 days of treatment. Interestingly, long-term captivity did not mitigate the stress response, since the toads maintained 3-fold increased CORT even after 3 months under these conditions. Moreover, long-term captivity in the same condition increased total leukocyte count (TLC) and generated an even greater decrease in BKA, suggesting that consequences of the stress response can be aggravated by time in captivity.  相似文献

Examining the relevance of ‘animal personality’ involves linking consistent among- and within-individual behavioural variation to fitness in the wild. Studies aiming to do this typically assay personality in captivity and rely on the assumption that measures of traits in the laboratory reflect their expression in nature. We examined this rarely tested assumption by comparing laboratory and field measurements of the behaviour of wild field crickets (Gryllus campestris) by continuously monitoring individual behaviour in nature, and repeatedly capturing the same individuals and measuring their behaviour in captivity. We focused on three traits that are frequently examined in personality studies: shyness, activity and exploration. All of them showed repeatability in the laboratory. Laboratory activity and exploration predicted the expression of their equivalent behaviours in the wild, but shyness did not. Traits in the wild were predictably influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and sunlight, but only activity showed appreciable within-individual repeatability. This suggests that some behaviours typically studied as personality traits can be accurately assayed in captivity, but the expression of others may be highly context-specific. Our results highlight the importance of validating the relevance of laboratory behavioural assays to analogous traits measured in the wild.  相似文献

Investigating the relationship between deep-water coral distribution and seabed topography is important for understanding the terrain habitat selection of these species and for the development of predictive habitat models. In this study, the distribution of the deep-water gorgonians, Paragorgia arborea and Primnoa resedaeformis, in relation to terrain variables at multiple scales of 30 m, 90 m and 170 m were investigated at Røst Reef, Traena Reef and Sotbakken Reef on the Norwegian margin, with Ecological Niche Factor Analysis applied. To date, there have been few published studies investigating this aspect of gorgonian distribution. A similar correlation between the distribution of P. arborea and P. resedaeformis and each particular terrain variable was found at each study site, but the strength of the correlation between each variable and distribution differed by reef. The terrain variables of bathymetric position index (BPI) and curvature at analysis scales of 90 m or 170 m were most strongly linked to the distribution of both species at the three geographically distinct study sites. Both gorgonian species tended to inhabit local topographic highs across all three sites, particularly at Sotbakken Reef and Traena Reef, with both species observed almost exclusively on such topographic highs. The tendency for observed P. arborea to inhabit ridge crests at Røst Reef was much greater than was indicated for P. resedaeformis. This investigation identifies the terrain variables which most closely correlate with distribution of these two gorgonian species, and analyzes their terrain habitat selection; further development of predictive habitat models may be considered essential for effective management of these species.  相似文献

Five monorchiid species are reported from Diagramma labiosum Macleay (Perciformes: Haemulidae) collected from Heron Island on the southern Great Barrier Reef (GBR): two described species, Helicometroides longicollis Yamaguti, 1934 and Diplomonorchis kureh Machida, 2005 and three new species, including one new genus, Asymmetrostoma heronensis n. g., n. sp., Lasiotocus arrhichostoma n. sp. and Proctotrema addisoni n. sp. Helicometroides longicollis and D. kureh were previously reported from the closely related species Diagramma pictum (Thunberg) from Japan. Two further monorchiid species known from D. pictum, Genolopa plectorhynchi (Yamaguti, 1934) and Paraproctotrema fusiforme Yamaguti, 1934, appear to be absent from the southern Great Barrier Reef. Previous reports of two other monorchiids from D. labiosum from the GBR, Paramonorcheides pseudocaranxi Dove & Cribb, 1998 and Helicometroides vitellosus (Durio & Manter, 1968), are shown to have been made in error. The high richness of monorchiids and other trematode families in D. labiosum is consistent with that seen in other haemulids elsewhere.  相似文献

Pocillopora damicornis (Linnaeus) has seasonal gametogenesis and planula release at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, in contrast with several previous reports on the species at other locations. The number of planulae released and gonad development varied considerably among colonies sampled at the same time, but reproductive activity occurred predominantly in winter. P. damicornis planulae settled preferentially on algal-covered substrata, rather than bare coral substrata, but showed subsequent mortality inversely related to this settlement preference. Competition with algae and biological disturbance contribute to spat mortality at different stages of settlement and growth.  相似文献

Because it is found aggregated in its normal environment and is tolerant of the presence of conspecifics in the laboratory, Eledone has been designated as a ‘social’ octopus. Behavioural observations of Eledone moschata confirmed that individuals interacted often, did not always move away from one another when touched and did not often withdraw into available shelters. However, E. moschata also formed a size-based dominance hierarchy, as do several species of Octopus in captivity. This parallel may mean that the apparent differences in social organization of octopods are quantitative rather than qualitative.  相似文献

A method for rearing five hawk moth species, namely Acherontia atropos (Linnaeus, 1758), A. lachesis (Fabricius, 1798), Agrius convolvuli (Linnaeus, 1758), Daphnis nerii (Linnaeus, 1758), and Hyles livornica (Esper, 1780) (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae) on artificial diets is described. Two recipes of these artificial rearing media are proposed. Special attention is given to maintenance of adult moths in captivity and raising immature stages.  相似文献

The prevalence of antibodies to morbilliviruses, Brucella and Toxoplasma was studied in the Black Sea bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus ponticus maintained in captivity. Serum from 59 dolphins was tested, and in most cases the tests were repeated 2–4 years later. Antibodies to the tested pathogens were detected in 69% of the dolphins. Sixteen Black Sea bottlenose dolphin maintained in captivity (27%) had antibodies to two, or even three, of the pathogens. No apparent signs of infection were found in the dolphins; however, the high prevalence of antibodies to the morbilliviruses, Brucella, and Toxoplasma may indicate an important role of dolphins in the ecology of these pathogens.  相似文献

The vegetative development of the seagrass Thalassia testudinum was assessed in three reefs (Hornos, isla Sacrificios, isla de Enmedio) of the Veracruz Reef System (Veracruz, México) which are located at increasing distances from the mainland coast. Leaf nutrient content of T. testudinum suggests that the availability of nitrogen and phosphorus increases from Hornos reef to isla Sacrificios and isla de Enmedio, that is, as the distance to the coast increases. The total biomass of this species tended to increase similarly as a result of the large increase of the biomass of rhizomes and roots but not of leaves. In contrast to previous knowledge of the response of seagrasses along gradients of nutrient availability, the rhizome and roots to shoot biomass ratio increased by a factor of two as nutrient availability increased. The density of T. testudinum shoots and their mass, the LAI and leaf productivity, and the average number of leaves produced by a T. testudinum shoot in 1 year were lowest in the reef closest to shore (Hornos). Our results show that the vegetative development of T. testudinum in Hornos reef is restrained when compared with that in isla Sacrificios and isla de Enmedio and suggest that the differences of vegetative development of this species in the Veracruz Reef System might be driven by factors other than nutrient availability.  相似文献

Remote populations are predicted to be vulnerable owing to their isolation from potential source reefs, and usually low population size and associated increased extinction risk. We investigated genetic diversity, population subdivision and connectivity in the brooding reef coral Seriatopora hystrix at the limits of its Eastern Australian (EA) distribution and three sites in the southern Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Over the approximately 1270 km survey range, high levels of population subdivision were detected (global FST = 0.224), with the greatest range in pairwise FST values observed among the three southernmost locations: Lord Howe Island, Elizabeth Reef and Middleton Reef. Flinders Reef, located between the GBR and the more southerly offshore reefs, was highly isolated and showed the signature of a recent bottleneck. High pairwise FST values and the presence of multiple genetic clusters indicate that EA subtropical coral populations have been historically isolated from each other and the GBR. One putative first-generation migrant was detected from the GBR into the EA subtropics. Occasional long-distance dispersal is supported by changes in species composition at these high-latitude reefs and the occurrence of new species records over the past three decades. While subtropical populations exhibited significantly lower allelic richness than their GBR counterparts, genetic diversity was still moderately high. Furthermore, subtropical populations were not inbred and had a considerable number of private alleles. The results suggest that these high-latitude S. hystrix populations are supplemented by infrequent long-distance migrants from the GBR and may have adequate population sizes to maintain viability and resist severe losses of genetic diversity.  相似文献
