Restoration of Wet Fen Meadows by Topsoil Removal: Vegetation Development and Germination Biology of Fen Species 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The present investigation was part of a fen restoration project, which deals with the rehabilitation of a deeply drained peat land used for intensive agriculture for more than 200 years. Consequently, the conditions for restoration are unfavorable. The hay of well‐developed fen meadows from nature reserves in the region appeared to contain enough viable seeds to act as a source for the development of target communities when spread out on bare peat after topsoil removal. Repeated vegetation analysis showed that a combination of topsoil removal and hay transfer resulted in the establishment of new populations in the target area for 70% of the species of the donor area. Germination conditions of fen species were investigated to determine the optimal combination for stimulating germination rates. Most fen species were found to be dormant, and it was shown that dormancy could be broken with fluctuating light and temperature cycles and stratification pre‐treatment. 相似文献

In the Vecht river plain, the vegetation diversity has been diminished during recent decades, due to hydrological changes and resulting eutrophication. Different options are discussed for hydrological management aimed at abating the eutrophication and at stimulating the characteristic mesotraphent succession phases of the fen vegetation. The ecological impact of the management plans are estimated with the hydro-ecological model ICHORS; this model takes into account the relations between the non-biotic environment and the presence of hydrophytes and phreatophytes. The impact of the hydrological options is assessed, after rearrangement of the predicted values of the species to values of the required fen vegetation. These results are incorporated in the management options with the water balances of the polders. Information on the costs of the options is used as a basis for a cost-benefit analysis. Technical hydrological solutions such as purification of the supplied water might contribute to the eutrophication abatement, but they are on their own unlikely to restore the ecosystems. Contrastingly, options involving the restoration of the original hydrology would probably lead to the characteristic mesotraphent fen vegetation once more, and the financial implications of this are likely to be the more favourable in the long-term. 相似文献

Our study evaluated how species composition and plant traits that indicate functioning condition in fens responded to grazing cessation over time in an arid ecosystem of the western US. The specific questions addressed were: (i) how does livestock exclusion influence species composition in fens; (ii) is grazing cessation associated with shifts in species functional traits that indicate fen condition; and (iii) what is the pattern of response to livestock exclusion over time?Location

We studied paired fenced and unfenced study sites in two fens to examine the effects of livestock exclusion. Parallel transects were established at each site, and plant species and ground cover were repeatedly surveyed, once prior to and multiple times following treatment, using 0.01 m2 frequency frames. We used NMDS to analyse species composition, RLQ and fourth‐corner analysis to evaluate species functional traits and environmental variables, and linear mixed effects models to examine differences in responses between fenced and unfenced study sites over time.Results
After fencing, we observed unexpected shifts in species composition and plant functional traits. Grazed sites were associated with peat‐forming obligate wetland, moss and sedge species, while fenced sites were characterized by non‐peat‐forming facultative upland, and upland forb, grass and early seral species. Species composition also varied between sites and sample years.Conclusions
We found that livestock exclusion strongly affects plant species composition in fens, including promoting species with functional traits that indicate a loss of functioning condition, such as ruderal and upland species. Possible explanations for these observed shifts include: (1) biomass accumulation in the absence of herbivory, (2) competitive exclusion in fenced sites, (3) succession, (4) the abiotic conditions of our study sites, particularly hydrology and nutrient status, and (5) interactions among these factors. We conclude that degradation of fen wetlands caused by livestock grazing in the arid western US may not be reversed by excluding livestock alone. 相似文献4.

In order to stop the continuous decline of typical dune slack communities along the Dutch coast, restoration projects have been carried out since 1952. Restoration measures consisted of re-introducing traditional management techniques in dune slacks, such as mowing, grazing and sod removal, or constructing artificial dune slacks to compensate for lost biodiversity elsewhere. An analysis of successful and unsuccessful projects showed that constructing new dune slacks was not very successful for maintaining new populations of endangered dune slack species, since such projects were often carried out in areas where seed banks were depleted, while hydrological conditions and seed dispersal mechanisms were sub-optimal. The construction of sand dikes to prevent sea intrusion in large beach plains was, unintentionally, a temporary success for the establishment of many Red List species, although such measures often disrupted natural dune slack formation. Successful sites were all characterised by a regular discharge of calcareous groundwater provided by local or regional hydrological systems, where not very long ago populations of typical dune slack plants were present. Under such conditions, sod removal was a successful measure to create pioneer stages which were relatively stable, due to a very slow accumulation of organic matter in the topsoil. It is argued that new and more flexible coastal defence strategies can provide new opportunities for natural and relatively stable pioneer stages of dune slack formation, suitable for the long term preservation of endangered dune slack species. 相似文献

The present paper reviews the major environmental problems in Dutch aquatic and semi-terrestrial fens: desiccation, (internal and external) eutrophication, acidification, habitat fragmentation and intoxication. It discusses both the positive and the negative consequences of the restoration measures taken in Dutch fens, and strongly emphasises the biogeochemical and biological processes and factors responsible for the deterioration of plant and animal communities in fens. Only with the knowledge of these key processes and factors are optimal restoration and management measures possible. Finally, important gaps in knowledge are pointed out and a call for new research is made. 相似文献

After abandonment of chalk grassland in the Netherlands, Brachypodium pinnatum had become very dominant and this resulted in a dramatic decrease of plant diversity. Restoration of these abandoned sites is important, because of its former high diversity with many nationally endangered species. To restore the chalk grassland vegetation, the impact of the introduction of different experimental cutting regimes was investigated during three years. The thick litter layer and the dominance of Brachypodium was strongly reduced after introduction of all cutting regimes. In all cutting treatments forb phytomass increased considerably, especially in the twice-a-year cutting vegetation, where the forb phytomass became as high as that of Brachypodium. Phanerogamic species diversity was stimulated in all cutting regimes. Especially the number of short-lived forbs. with a persistent seed bank, increased markedly in the twice-a-year cutting treatment. It is concluded that cutting the vegetation twice is adequate to reduce the negative effects of the thick litter layer and the abundant growth of Brachypodium. It creates an appropriate starting point for more detinite management, whether mowing or grazing. However, the restoration of a more complete species assortment strongly depends on the re-invasion possibilities of these species. 相似文献

Restoration of Wet Dune Slacks on the Dutch Wadden Sea Islands: Recolonization After Large-Scale Sod Cutting 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The effects of sod cutting were studied in a dune area on the Dutch Wadden Sea Island of Texel. Sod cutting was carried out in a range of different dune slacks in order to restore dune slack vegetation with many endangered Red List species. Sod cutting removed approximately 96% of the soil seed bank. Species abundant in the seed bank, notably Juncacea, also had a high frequency in the vegetation that established during the first year after the restoration measures. Many other species not registered in the seed bank or in the former vegetation also appeared. Species richness in the monitored plots exceeded that of uncut reference plots after a few years. Colonization rates were higher than extinction rates in most plots, indicating that a stable state has not been reached after 5 years. Differences in species richness between slacks appeared to be related to the occurrence of source areas nearby and availability of dispersal agents, such as flooding and animals. 相似文献

Measuring the efficiency of fen restoration on carabid beetles and vascular plants: a case study from north‐eastern Germany 下载免费PDF全文
The aim of the study was to assess the effects of fen rewetting on carabid beetle and vascular plant assemblages within riverine fens along the river Peene in north‐eastern Germany. Drained (silage grassland), rewetted (restored formerly drained silage grassland), and near‐natural (fairly pristine) stands were compared. Eighty‐four beetle species (7,267 individuals) and 135 plant species were recorded. The richness of vascular plant species and the number of endangered species were highest on near‐natural fens. Fourteen years of rewetting did not increase plant species numbers compared with drained fens. For carabid beetles, however, species richness and the number of stenotopic species were highest on rewetted fens. Rewetting caused the replacement of generalist carabids by wetland specialists, but did not provide suitable habitat for specialist fen carabids or for plant species of oligo‐ or mesotrophic fen communities. Therefore, raising the water table on fens with nutrient‐rich, degraded peat was not sufficient for restoring species assemblages of intact fens, although water level was the most important environmental factor separating species assemblages. Our study illustrated that insects and plants may respond differentially to restoration, stressing the need to consider different taxa when assessing the efficiency of fen restoration. During the symposium Restoration and recovery of shallow lake ecosystems in The Netherlands studies on restoration of eutrophic lakes were addressed and discussed. Many Dutch shallow lakes have received high external loadings of phosphorus through supply water that is influenced by the River Rhine and loadings in The Netherlands. Two important Action Plans (the Rhine Action Plan, the North Sea Action Plan) are now in operation to reduce nutrient emissions. The targets set are not likely to be fully reached, so that supplementary reduction of phosphorus supplied to inland fresh waters will be required. In several shallow lakes such a reduction has been achieved recently, but without leading to discernible recovery. The main causes of delay are phosphorus storage and its subsequent release from sediments and foodweb; however, the remaining extraneous phosphorus supply is often still too high. Supplementary actions are, therefore, called for. A further reduction of phosphorus inputs is suggested, besides supplementary measures proposed, viz. dredging, flushing, biomanipulation, chemomanipulation. Restoration to the past situation via upwelling groundwater appeares to be feasible in some cases. There is a common consensus that each lake behaves differently depending to its morphology, hydrology and history of eutrophication. Therefore each lake has to be studied before restoration measures can be applied. Besides, the ecosystem should not only be studied as a separate entity, but as a part of systems of a higher integration level. 相似文献

Restoration of wet grassland communities on peat soils involves management of nutrient supply and hydrology. The concept of
nutrient limitation was discussed as well as its interaction with drainage and rewetting of severely drained peat soils. Different
methods of assessing nutrient limitation were compared and the type and extent of nutrient limitation were determined for
several wet grassland communities. It was concluded that a full-factorial field fertilisation experiment is the most preferable
method. Plant tissue analyses and soil chemical analyses were considered less suitable, although they may provide helpful
additional information. Fertilisation experiments in the laboratory using sods or using test plants appear to be the proper
means to study mechanisms or processes, but have a restricted predictive value for field situations. Generalising the results,
it seems that many relativily undisturbed grassland plant communities on peaty soils are characterised by N limitation. Phosphate
limitation for vegetation on peat soils is mainly observed in specific circumstances such as extreme calcium richness, high
concentrations of Fe or as a result of drainage or long-term hay cropping. The latter two may also cause K limitation. Rewetting
is regarded as a prerequisite in restoring wet grassland communities. Further restoration measures to influence nutrient availability
depend on aims of the management and the individual site conditions.

The conquest of land from the sea has been a long tradition in the Netherlands. When salt marshes were high enough, they were embanked when it was economically feasible, and transformed into intensively exploited agricultural land. This resulted in the transformation of halophytic communities to glycophytic communities. Often as an alternative, a low levee, a summerdike was built, which greatly reduced the flooding frequency of the landward summerpolder, hence creating a sedimentation deficit therein. Such summerpolders now cover 1200 ha in the Netherlands, 2100 ha in NW-Germany and small areas in England. Due to continuous embankments, the present salt-marsh area is relatively small with respect to the tidal basins. Discussions have been started how to increase the salt-marsh area. Two options will be discussed, firstly de-embankment of summerpolders and maintenance of the protective seawall, secondly increase of the effects of saline seepage behind the seawall by top soil removal. Both options include the restoration of salt-marsh communities (target communities) in intensively agriculturally exploited sites that have been salt marshes before. From the few examples abroad and experiments it is discussed (1) to which extent the sedimentation deficit in summerpolders could be compensated for, (2) if the soil seed bank is likely to contribute to re-establishment of salt-marsh communities, (3) if the dispersal of propagules of halophytic plants will be possible by hydrochory when the summerdike is breached, (4) to what extent is dispersal by endozoochory through waterfowl important in case re-establishment in a saline seepage area behind the seawall without open connection to the sea is envisaged. Two case studies of de-embanked summerpolders in the Netherlands revealed that the sedimentation deficit can be counteracted by rapid sedimentation, provided enough transport is possible from the foreshore. Dispersal by incoming tidal water from the nearby salt-marsh source area into the target area is possible for many salt-marsh plant species. The rate of success seems to depend on the relative position of source area and target area. A case study in a saline seepage area after top soil removal in the Netherlands, showed that the number of viable seeds dispersed by droppings from waterfowl is limited. Hence the possibilities for restoration of inland halophytic plant communities seem much lower than after de-embankment of summerpolders. 相似文献

Most relatively large (> 250 ha) and shallow (< 2 m), Dutch lakes originate from large-scale peat mining. Originally, their
water tables were regulated by natural processes such as evapotransporation, precipitation, drainage and seepage (up and downwards).
These lakes used to be oligo to mesotrophic, and the phytoplankton consisted mainly of diatoms and green algae. However, 30
years ago filamentous cyanobacteria were also present.
Owing to the intensification of agriculture in the surroundings of the lakes, their management developed more and more towards
a man-made reservoir function. This management resulted in inflow of eutrophic water from the agricultural areas in winter.
In summer the lakes were increasingly used as a water supply. This supply is compensated by water imported mainly from the
River Rhine.
The impacts of this reservoir function on the limnology of the Dutch fen lakes are discussed with the Tjeukemeer, the Loosdrechtse
Plassen and the Reeuwijkse Plassen as examples. All these lakes have become typical eutrophic waters with high turbidity,
dominance of filamentous cyanobacteria and bream and complete loss of submerged macrophytes. Finally, methods and results

在山西吕梁山系按照纬度从北向南依次选取马伦草原、荷叶坪、云顶山作为研究区,于2015、2016、2017年7月下旬进行亚高山草甸植被群落多样性调查,研究吕梁山亚高山草甸物种多样性不同年份、不同纬度的时空变化格局。结果表明:(1)吕梁山亚高山草甸群落中矮嵩草(Kobresia humilis)和珠芽蓼(Polygonum viviparum)、线叶嵩草(Kobresia capillifolia)和珠芽蓼、车前草(Plantago asiatica)和披碱草(Elymus dahuricus)分别为马伦草原、荷叶坪、云顶山的优势种,不同山地植物优势种和次优势种均以菊科(Asteraceae)、蔷薇科(Rosaceae)、莎草科(Cyperaceae)、禾本科(Gramineae)植物为主。(2)吕梁山亚高山草甸物种多样性在不同年份分布较为稳定,Pielou指数在连续3年内均无较大变化; Shannon-Wiener指数、Simpson指数和Patrick指数在2016年最高,同时该年份的降水天数也是最多,表明吕梁山亚高山草甸物种多样性在时间上呈现出受降水条件影响较大的变化格局。(3)吕梁山偏南部的云顶山多样性指数高于偏北部的马伦草原和荷叶坪,表明吕梁山亚高山草甸物种多样性在空间上表现出由北向南逐渐升高的变化格局。因此,吕梁山亚高山草甸物种多样性在时空上呈现出受降水条件影响较大,且由北向南逐渐升高的变化格局,降水条件和纬度梯度对该山地亚高山草甸物种多样性的时空变化格局产生了重要影响。 相似文献

Modeling Habitat Change in Salt Marshes After Tidal Restoration 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Salt marshes continue to degrade in the United States due to indirect human impacts arising from tidal restrictions. Roads or berms with inadequate provision for tidal flow hinder ecosystem functions and interfere with self‐maintenance of habitat, because interactions among vegetation, soil, and hydrology within tidally restricted marshes prevent them from responding to sea level rise. Prediction of the tidal range that is expected after restoration relative to the current geomorphology is crucial for successful restoration of salt marsh habitat. Both insufficient (due to restriction) and excessive (due to subsidence and sea level rise) tidal flooding can lead to loss of salt marshes. We developed and applied the Marsh Response to Hydrological Modifications model as a predictive tool to forecast the success of management scenarios for restoring full tides to previously restricted areas. We present an overview of a computer simulation tool that evaluates potential culvert installations with output of expected tidal ranges, water discharges, and flood potentials. For three New England tidal marshes we show species distributions of plants for tidally restricted and nonrestricted areas. Elevation ranges of species are used for short‐term (<5 years) predictions of changes to salt marsh habitat after tidal restoration. In addition, elevation changes of the marsh substrate measured at these sites are extrapolated to predict long‐term (>5 years) changes in marsh geomorphology under restored tidal regimes. The resultant tidal regime should be designed to provide habitat requirements for salt marsh plants. At sites with substantial elevation losses a balance must be struck that stimulates elevation increases by improving sediment fluxes into marshes while establishing flooding regimes appropriate to sustain the desired plants. 相似文献

Grassland restoration has become a key tool in addressing the drastic losses of seminatural grassland since the mid‐twentieth century. This study examined the restoration by green hay transfer of upland hay meadows, a particularly scarce and vulnerable habitat, over an 11‐year chronosequence. The community composition of 18 restoration meadows was compared with that of donor reference sites in two study areas in the Pennine region of northern England. The study investigated: differences in community composition between donor and restoration meadows; transfer of upland hay meadow target species; and the effect of time and isolation from neighboring meadows on the community composition of the restoration meadows. Results showed that restoration meadows differed from donor meadows in that some target species were easily transferred whilst others were not found in the restoration meadows, or were at low levels of cover. Time had a significant effect on the community composition of the restoration meadows, but the similarity between restoration sites and donor sites did not increase with time, and the effect of isolation was not significant. The study showed that the green hay transfer method increases botanical diversity and is an important first step in meadow restoration. However, further restoration activity, such as seed addition, is likely to be required if restoration sites are to resemble closely the reference donor sites. 相似文献

高寒草甸具有重要的生态服务功能,然而固有脆弱性使其极易遭受气候变化和人为干扰等多重因素的影响。作为滇西北旅游资源中重要的组分之一,高寒草甸吸引了大批游客前往开展徒步旅行活动,但伴随着的践踏干扰作用会不可避免地对高寒草甸生态系统带来负面影响。然而,目前关注践踏干扰对滇西北高寒草甸植被的影响,特别是植被功能性状和功能多样性如何发生变化方面的研究还十分欠缺。以云南省香格里拉市碧塔海自然保护区内的典型高寒草甸生态系统为研究对象,采用实验践踏的方式(一共5种不同强度的践踏处理)来模拟旅游活动对草甸植被的干扰作用,并以草甸植被的茎叶性状特征为切入点,重点探讨践踏干扰对茎叶性状的平均大小和变异程度的影响,以及物种丰富度(以物种形态分类为基础)和功能丰富度(以功能性状为基础)之间的关系。研究结果显示,随着践踏强度的增加,植株高度和叶片大小的平均值,而不是茎叶性状的变异程度,出现明显下降趋势。此外,物种丰富度和功能丰富度均随践踏强度的增强而减小,且两者之间呈现显著正相关关系。然而,较之轻度践踏实验组,重度践踏实验组中的功能均匀度和功能分离度水平均有所增加,表明践踏干扰可能会在短期内打破优势种对资源的绝对占有格局和减少物种间的生态位重叠程度。尽管高寒草甸对人类践踏活动有一定的承受能力,但气候变化和人为干扰等多重因素势必会改变和影响高寒草甸群落的结构和功能可持续性,这也对高寒草甸的保护与管理工作提出了更加紧迫的要求。 相似文献

In the Turku Archipelago of SW Finland the traditional animal husbandry dramatically decreased in 1950s after which the unused semi-natural pastures and meadows began to develop into less species rich shrub and tree communities. Restoration of some semi-natural meadows and pastures started in the late 1970s. Removing trees and shrubs, grazing, mowing, and pollarding deciduous trees were used as restoration of practises. Vegetation changes were followed from forty-one permanent sample plots established on restored areas. In this paper the data before restoration and 7–8 years after the first monitoring was analysed with parametric tests. The sample plots were divided into three restoration groups where the main restoration practises were: group 1. grazing, group 2. thinning (clearing plots from shrubs and removing some trees), group 3. thinning, mowing, and grazing (old wooded meadows). The results showed that: (1) The vegetation changed during analysed time. The number of species increased in all restored areas even though the changes were more pronounced in grazed areas and wooded meadows than in thinned areas. During restoration many common herb and grass species immigrated into the sample plots, but very few new indicator species of meadows were recorded. Most of the new species were found in few numbers in a sample plot which led to the significant increase in the number of sparse species (percentage cover < 1) in all restoration groups. The grasses benefited more from the restoration than herbs increasing their percentage cover significantly in grazed areas and in wooded meadows. In thinned areas the total percentage cover of the ten most dominant herb and grass species increased significantly. (2) The different restoration groups changed vegetation quite similarly. In grazed areas and in wooded meadows significant changes were slightly more numerous than in thinned areas. (3) The differences between the islands in vegetation changes were not pronounced. The added variance components among islands increased during restoration which probably indicated that the restoration practises as well as the species pool of the islands influenced the success of restoration. 相似文献
