After being acclimatized to feeding on fruit flies, the Asian house gecko, Hemidactylus frenatus Duméril & Bibron (Gekkonidae:Squamata), consumed fewer methyl eugenol (ME) fed male fruit flies, Bactrocera papayae Drew & Hancock (Tephritidae: Diptera) than when offered ME-deprived males. After one-day exposure to only ME-fed males, the geckos avoided feeding on female flies when in the presence of ME-fed males. When mechanically disturbed, the ME-fed males spontaneously ejaculated a rectal secretion which contains phenyl propanoids that deter the predator.The ME-fed males also competed significantly better than normal (ME-deprived) males for virgin females. Male B. papayae converts ME to three other phenyl propanoids which act in concert as a sex pheromone to attract females during courtship and as an allomone to the gecko.  相似文献

Reciprocity and social bonding hypotheses were evaluated as explanations for observed patterns of social grooming in assamese macaques (Macaca assamensis). In accordance with social bonding, females, as the long-term residents of this matrifocal group, groomed each other and juveniles more often than males groomed one another or juveniles. On the other hand, males groomed females more often and for longer durations than females groomed males and, whereas both males and females groomed juveniles more often than juveniles groomed them, juveniles groomed their elders for longer durations. Male grooming of females did not seem directly related to matings as males are single mount ejaculators and use coercive mating tactics. Male grooming of females could not be accounted for in terms of reciprocity; it was not a simple function of dominance. Although both sexes groomed subordinate females more than vice versa, males groomed dominant males more and females groomed subordinate males more than they received grooming from them. Grooming was concluded to function to establish and maintain affiliative social bonds rather than as a specific mechanism to obtain matings or any other specific reciprocation in terms of services or favors.  相似文献

Ontogenetic shifts in habitat use and activity in a stream-dwelling isopod   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We examined ontogenetic changes in diel patterns of habitat use and activity of the lotic isopod Lirceus fontinalis in relation to differences in predation risk from green sunfish, Lepomis cyanellus. Juveniles are ≤5 mm total length (TL), individuals 6-9 mm TL are mature females (c. 90%) and immature males, and mature males are ≥10 mm TL. Isopods of all sizes were far more dense in Cladophora , a filamentous green algae, than in open silt/sand substrates in fish pools. Densities of each size did not increase in open areas at night in fish pools when risk of predation presumably decreases. Few individuals of any size class occurred in open silt/sand areas in fish pools. However, habitat use did not depend on fish presence. Densities and relative abundances of all sizes were similar between algal and open habitats in fishless pools both day and night, except for mature males which were more abundant in open areas during daylight. All sizes of isopods were significantly more dense in fishless versus fish pools, and density of a size class was influenced by fish presence. Densities of size classes were typically juveniles > individuals 6-9 mm TL > mature males. Green sunfish are size selective feeders on isopods, thus demography of isopods within pools may be partially influenced by the size structure of the fish population.
Isopods reduced their activity, as measured by captures in benthic traps, in the presence of caged green sunfish only at night. This behavior coupled with relatively high activity levels during daylight regardless of fish presence suggests other predators or factors may influence diel activity. Mature males were overrepresented in traps relative to their occurrence in fish runs, indicating high activity levels. Mature males were also more active than gravid and nongravid females and juveniles in the presence of fish in laboratory aquaria. Number of male encounters with nongravid females depended on activity level.  相似文献

Circannual and circadian activity patterns of American mink Neovison vison were studied in a fishpond area in northern Germany. Fourteen mink were radiotracked, nine of them (five males, four females) for at least 6 months, some of them even up to 21 months. Both sexes have reduced activity rates in winter months and showed a considerable increase of activity during mating season (March). In summer months—during the pup raising period—female activity continued to be high. Male mink, on the other hand, were less active with the exception of August and September. During this time, dispersal of juveniles takes place with resident males increasingly having to defend their territories. Circadian activity rhythms differed markedly between sexes. All investigated females exhibited a perennial diurnal pattern. Female activity during twilight and night was significantly lower than during daylight. Three investigated male mink showed a typical nocturnal course throughout the year. Daylight activity of these animals was very low, increased during dusk and dawn activity rates and stayed at a higher level during the night. Two males behaved arrhythmic; they did not prefer any time of the day for activity. The observed temporal strategies were discussed in context of intra-sexual territoriality, sexual dimorphism in body size and different environmental factors.  相似文献

Green treefrogs, Hyla cinerea, at a study site in eastern Georgia behaved as prolonged breeders: there were many more males present each night than females, the arrival of which was unpredictable. Individual males were usually consistent in their behaviour during a single night, and were most often observed calling. There was a weak, negative correlation between male size (snout-vent length, unless otherwise stated) and the frequency of satellite behaviour, defined as a non-calling male's being situated near a calling male. In 2 of 3 years, the mean size of males observed as satellites was less than that of the calling males with which they were associated on a given night; however, many satellites were the same size or larger than calling males. The distributions of matings per male during three seasons were not significantly different than Poisson distributions with the same means. Individual mating success was best predicted by attendance at the breeding site; mating success was negatively related to the frequency of satellite behaviour in some analyses, but very little of the variance was explained. An exhaustive series of analyses failed to show any pattern of size-dependent mating, including weight-assortative mating, even when males that were frequently satellites were excluded. The relative sizes of males and females in amplexus had little effect on fertilization success. On a seasonal basis, males were clumped in their spatial distribution, and matings tended to occur where male density was highest. Individual males were highly variable in their patterns of movement, which were not correlated with size or mating success. Mating success was also unrelated to the frequency (Hz) of the low-frequency spectral peak in the advertisement call of the male; male size and weight were negatively correlated with the frequency of the low-frequency peak.  相似文献

The locomotor performance of reptiles is profoundly influenced by temperature, but little is known about how the time of day when the animal is usually active may influence performance. Time of day may be particularly relevant for studies on nocturnal reptiles that thermoregulate by day, but are active at night when ambient temperatures are cooler. If selection favours individuals that match their performance to activity times, then nocturnal species should perform better during the night, when they are normally active, than during the day. To test this hypothesis, we investigated how the time of day and body temperature affected the locomotor performance of adult females of the velvet gecko (Amalosia lesueurii). We measured the sprint speeds, running speeds and number of stops of 43 adult females at four different body temperatures (20, 25, 30 and 35 °C) during the day and at night. At night, sprint speeds were higher at 20 and 35 °C but sprint speeds were similar at 25 and 30 °C. By day, sprint speed increased with body temperature, peaking at 30 °C, before declining at 35 °C. However, gecko speeds over 1 m was higher at night at all four test temperatures than by day. Number of stops showed broadly similar patterns and females stopped almost twice as often on the racetrack during the day than they did at night. Furthermore, the thermal breadth of performance differed depending on when geckos were tested. Our results demonstrate that both body temperature and the time of day affects the behaviour and locomotor performance of female velvet geckos, with geckos running faster at night, the time of day when they are usually active. This study adds to evidence that both body temperature and the time of day are crucial for estimating the performance of ectotherms and evaluations and predictions of their vulnerability to climate warming should consider the context of laboratory experimental design.  相似文献

This paper reports prevalence of coccidial oocysts in fecal samples from 6 endemic and 2 introduced lizard species on Mauritius, an island nation in the Indian Ocean. Total coccidian prevalence was 54% (n = 341) for the endemic 'ornate day gecko,' Phelsuma ornata; 48% (n = 159) for the endemic 'Durrell's night gecko,' Nactus durrelli; 53% (n = 15) for the endemic 'Serpent Island night gecko,' N. serpensinsula; and 78% (n = 248) for the introduced gecko, Hemidactylus frenatus. These high prevalences may reflect lack of long-lasting immune response to coccidial infection. There were few significant differences in prevalence among age, island, sex, or body condition within species, suggesting that these coccidia are relatively nonpathogenic and have little effect on host fitness. Prevalence was higher in the dry season than the wet season. These data suggest other factors, such as low host immune response to reinfection, affect overall prevalence more significantly than the effect of humidity on oocyst survival on Mauritius. No coccidia were found in samples from the endemic 'Gunner's Quoin night gecko,' N. coindemirensis (n = 155), probably reflecting parasite extinction due to a host population bottleneck following historical introduction of rats. There was no evidence of competitive or facilitative interactions between Eimeria sp. and Isospora sp., but evidence of competition between 2 Eimeria species in the 'ornate day gecko,' Phelsuma ornata. No evidence was found of cross-species infection, suggesting that reptile coccidia have high host specificity and are, therefore, poor subjects for studies of parasite-mediated competition and the evolution of sex.  相似文献

2002年4-8月份,在中国科学院海北高寒草甸生态系统定位站附近,采用标志流放、直接观察法和解剖法对青藏高原特有的植食性小哺乳动物———高原鼠兔(Ochotonacurzoniae)的行为时间分配、繁殖特征和后代存活率等方面进行了研究。结果表明,雌、雄成体平均地面活动时间占总时间的比例分别为88.67%和89.88%,在不同的繁殖时段,成体的各种行为时间分配存在显著的变化,并影响后代的存活率。幼体从出生到15d的存活率和雌、雄性成体的每次移动距离以及雌性成体的地面活动强度都显著的正相关;从15d到45d的存活率和雄性成体的地面活动强度、观望强度显著的正相关。在相同的观察时期,高原鼠兔雌、雄成体的一些行为时间分配存在显著差异,如雄性成体地面移动距离、频次在繁殖前期显著的高于雌性成体;雄性成体的观望强度在6、7月份显著高于雌性成体。说明雄性成体在领域防卫中较雌性成体承担更多的责任,雌、雄成体在育幼活动中的繁殖投入存在互补性。  相似文献

In bushcricket communication systems males have to signal acoustically to attract females. The calling activity, however, not only may increase mating success, but also may result in costs in terms of energy and predation risks. In this study the calling activity of males and its timing during the day were analyzed for several species of the genus Poecilimon,representing two different communication systems. In species with mute females that approach the males phonotactically, calling was restricted to darkness and syllable rates were high. In species where females respond acoustically to male song and thus can induce the male to approach them phonotactically, males called during both day and night or during the day only, and syllable rates were low. After mating, male acoustic activity dropped to a very low level but was restored during the following 2 to 3 days, a time period longer than the minimal male mating interval. The results are discussed with regard to possible energetic limitations, the risk of attracting predators and parasitoids, and the spermatophore production of males.  相似文献

Sleeping cluster composition and distribution were studied in a semi-free-ranging population of 174 Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) in Rocamadour/France. Over a period of 2 months 341 sleeping clusters comprising 754 animals were recorded as animals left the sleeping trees. To control for nocturnal activities five observation periods were conducted, each of which covered a complete night. Sleeping partners were selected from a particular set of individuals. From night to night there was considerable fluctuation among the individuals, which finally formed a sleeping cluster. Preferred size of sleeping clusters was two and three individuals per cluster. The majority of females spent the nights in body contact to infants or female juveniles; whereas males either slept alone or with older male juveniles. Adult males and females never shared a sleeping cluster. During the night the animals showed hardly any locomotive and vocal activity. Felids are generally considered to be crepuscular and nocturnal in their activity, but few studies have attempted to analyze the variability of their activity patterns. We studied the daily activity of the Iriomote cat Prionailurus iriomotensis by radio-tracking on Iriomote Island, Japan. The general activity patterns of Iriomote cats showed slightly prevailing activity during dark periods of the day with particular peaks at dawn and dusk or during the early hours of the night. However, these patterns were clearly dependent on the sex and reproductive status of the cat. Peaks of cats’ activity coincided with those of their main prey. On average, the cats were active for thirteen hours per day. During the mating season, the rhythm of activity in males followed that of breeding females, but not that of non-breeding ones. Males exhibited 11% higher total daily activity and longer active bouts during the mating period than in the remainder of the year. Breeding females had additional mid-day activity peak during the nursing period, but their total time of activity per day was 16% lower than in the period of kittens’ independence. Their active bouts were shorter and more frequent during nursing than at other times. These results suggest that lactating females perform frequent movements to and from the den site to care for kittens. During the non-nursing period, females increased their activity, possibly in response to lowered prey abundance and the need of intensive foraging to recover after lactation. Seasonal and sexual variation of activity patterns in the Iriomote cats confirmed the existence of different reproductive strategies of males and females of these solitary carnivores.  相似文献

In most biparental, substrate-brooding species of cichlid fishes, female and male roles differ. Females are usually more involved in direct care of the young while males spend more time away patrolling the territory. This study tested the flexibility of these sex roles with removal experiments in the convict cichlid, Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum. When males were removed, female fanning activity increased. When females were removed, males spent more time fanning and less time away from the brood. Other behavioural variables (frequency of digging, mouthing, foraging and retrieving) were not affected. Being alone or paired during a first breeding episode did not affect parental behaviour during a subsequent episode in which all fish were paired. Observations were carried out during the day and at night, and nocturnal fanning of fry is reported here for the first time. Female role appears less flexible than male role, as befits the more direct care normally given by females.  相似文献

Activity patterns of Dendrohyrax arboreus were investigated by direct observation of a habituated population in the Parc National des Volcans, Rwanda. Of seventeen animals caught, four were males and thirteen were females. Of the population, 17% were juveniles. Population estimates from transects indicated a biomass of 23.3 kg/ha. Radio-tracking of ten individuals showed bimodal activity patterns, with peaks after dusk and later in the night for males and during the day in females. Hyrax were active 16% of the time. Feeding was the dominant activity and mature leaves of Hagenia abyssinica were the most important food. Travelling within and between trees occupied 4% of the time and occurred predominantly during daylight hours. Calling behaviour was markedly seasonal, being most pronounced in the dry season when hyrax called regularly in the early evening, and often a second time late at night. During the rains, calls were infrequent and unpredictable, tending to occur in the second half of the night. There was no correlation between weather or lunar conditions and calling behaviour. The ecological strategy of tree hyrax in terms of metabolic rate, thermoregulation and energy conservation is discussed in the light of their activity and feeding behaviour.  相似文献

Winglength was the most powerful intersex discriminator, giving 99.5% separation by itself and 100% combined with bodyweight or keel length. Females but not males, had longer wings and were heavier as adults than as juveniles. Pectoral fat and muscle indices explained 81–91% of variation in total fat and 93–96% of variation in total lean dry weight for male and female hawks but bodyweight change explained only 56–60% of variation in the fat index compared with 75–76% for pectoral lean dry weight. The best size index, keel length, explained only 6.4% of bodyweight variation in males and 11.2% in females. Winglength was very weakly correlated with keel length. Taking size difference into account, females were heavier with higher wingloading than males but had relatively lighter flight muscles and therefore a lower power availability relative to their flight requirements than in males. On the other hand, females had greater maximum fat stores (17% of bodyweight) than males (14%) and could have survived longer than males without food. These differences would be adaptive for the different role of each sex during breeding. The weight of first capture of live-trapped adults and juveniles increased between September and December, possibly because moulting (in adults) or hunting inexperience (in juveniles) kept weights low in autumn but also perhaps because the benefit of having large reserves for surviving, relative to the cost of decreased agility in flight because of increased wingloading, was greatest in mid-winter. Shot hawks weighed more than the live-trapped birds but showed the same trends, as did retrapped individuals. Females but not males, tended to lose weight in January before a further increase in the spring. Records of hawks retaken more than two months after first capture showed that between October and January survival in females but not males, was enhanced by high bodyweight. Since female weights were also significantly lower in southern Sweden than in central and northern areas, it is suggested that changing agriculture or other factors in the south may have reduced prey for females more than for males.  相似文献

Summary Over-winter torpor patterns of Richardson's ground squirrels hibernating in southern Alberta were monitored with temperature-sensitive radiocollars to determine if these patterns differed between males and females in a manner related to the greater costs of mating effort by males than females. The hibernation season (from immergence to emergence) was composed of three periods: post-immergence euthermy, heterothermy, and pre-emergence euthermy. The hibernation season was shorter for juveniles than adults both among males (< 150 versus 234 days) and females (185 versus 231 days), a reflection of the later immergence into hibernation by juveniles. However, regardless of the absolute duration of hibernation, heterothermy accounted for a smaller proportion of the hibernation season of males (93±5%) than females (98±1%) and, within the heterothermal period, males had shorter torpor bouts and longer inter-torpor arousals. Overall, males spent a smaller proportion of the hibernation season in torpor (85±6%) than females (92±1%). This sexual difference was largely attributable to the longer duration of preemergence euthermy for males than females. Males terminated torpor in January and February, when hibernacula were at their coldest, then remained euthermic for 8.8 days (range 0.5–25.0 days) before emergence. In contrast, females terminated torpor in March, when hibernaculum temperatures were increasing, then remained euthermic for only 1.1 days (range 0.5–2.0 days) before emergence. Males lost less mass per euthermic day during hibernation than females (7.0 versus 9.3 g/day). Males and females hibernated at similar depths (56 cm), but males had larger chambers than females (18 versus 16 cm3/g). Many males, but no females, cached seeds in the hibernaculum. Males met the costs of thermogenesis and euthermy from a combination of fat reserves and food caches, whereas females relied solely on fat. Access to food caches permitted males to terminate torpor several weeks in advance of emergence, during which time they recouped mass and developed sperm in preparation for the forthcoming mating season.  相似文献

Diel activity ofJesogammarus spinopalpus was monitored by an actograph using infra-red beams. The overall level and diel pattern of activity differed between males and females, and between the single and precopula phases. Single males were more active during the dark period (night) (153 intercepts/h) than during the light period (daytime) (50 intercepts/h), showing a clearly nocturnal habit, whereas the activity of single females was very low both at night (18 intercepts/h) and in the daytime (8 intercepts/h). The activity pattern of precopula pairs was nocturnal, but the level of activity was lower than that of single males (48 intercepts/h at night and 6 intercepts/h in the daytime). The sexual difference in activity level may reflect behavioral tactics during reproduction.  相似文献

19 juvenile members of known genealogies in two wild baboon groups were studied over a 16-month period to compare the ontogeny of agonistic experience and dominance relations for males and females. Juveniles of all age-sex classes were disproportionately likely to receive aggression from and submit to adult males per unit of time spent in proximity. This pattern intensified with increasing juvenile age. With age, juvenile females more often submitted to unrelated adult females from higher-ranking families, whereas this was not true for juvenile males. All juveniles received aggression from older group members more often during feeding than was expected by chance. High rates of agonistic interaction with unrelated adult females accounted for old juvenile females (3–5.5 years-old) interacting agonistically more frequently than male age peers and young juveniles of either sex (1–2.5 years-old). Adult females were also more aggressive toward females among young juveniles, suggesting that adult females target females among juveniles for aggression and resistance to rank reversal. Within juvenile age groups, males dominated all females and all younger males, irrespective of maternal dominance status. Dominance relations among female age-peers were generally isomorphic with relations among their mothers. No juvenile targeted any older male for rank reversal. Males targeted all older females, whereas females typically targeted only older females from families lower-ranking than their own. The strong sexual dimorphism in adult body size in baboons may explain why juvenile males' dominance relations with peers and adult females are not structured along lines of family membership as is true for the less dimorphic macaques. Acquisition of higher agonistic status probably allows juveniles of both sexes to increase their success in within-group feeding competition during late stages of juvenility, which, in turn, could affect important life-history traits such as age at menarche and adult body size.  相似文献

Temperate zone bats can use daily torpor as a means of saving energy. Some argue, however, that torpor is costly for both males and females and that individuals should only use it during times of poor foraging conditions. Others hypothesize that the costs are greater for females and that males should enter torpor more regularly. We tested these alternative hypotheses by using temperature-sensitive radiotransmitters to monitor use of torpor and foraging by free-ranging big brown bats ( Eptesicus fuscus ). During the pregnancy period, males used torpor at night more and foraged less often than did females. Males also went into deep torpor more often and remained in torpor longer than did females. When they foraged, males and females were away from the roosts for equal periods of time. During the lactation period, males and females rarely failed to forage and foraging times were again no different between the sexes, although males may roost at night away from the maternity colonies. Males again used torpor and deep torpor more often and for longer than females did. These results support the hypothesis that the fitness costs of using torpor are lower for males than for reproductive females and that males regularly use torpor as an energy-saving mechanism. Females enter torpor only when foraging conditions are poor, presumably because torpor prolongs gestation and slows neonatal growth thereby leaving less time for females and their young to prepare for hibernation.  相似文献

Male and female strategies were compared for wild–living populations of coypu (Myocastor coypus Molina) censused during two years in marshlands of central–west France. In a habitat composed of a canal network bisecting pasture fields typically 0–5 ha in size, coypu movements were largely restricted to stretches of open water, though males explored further from water than females. Adults occupied home ranges with a mean size of 3–82 ha or 1. 19 km of canal, males on average moving faster over a larger area and using a greater length of canal than females. Movements within partially shared ranges were most positively coordinated between male–female pairs, while male–male interactions were less frequent. Juvenile coypus were largely absent from the late winter population. Synchronization of litters in March–April resulted in a peak of juveniles in early summer. The sex ratio of juveniles and sub–adults reversed from a male bias in summer to a female bias in autumn. Population densities peaked in November at 4 ha, with a significant female bias (1M: 1–6F). In the same month, a neighbouring population at lower density (1 ha-l after treatment with rodenticide) was significantly male biased (2–7M:lF) and may therefore have been acting as a sink for males dispersing from the high density population. Transients comprised 63% of the population. Females were resident longer than males, 22% of females remaining at least 5 months against 6% of males. Dispersal was recorded only for males aged 6 months or older. The general result, of exploratory behaviour amongst males contrasting with the establishment of longer term home ranges by females, is discussed in terms of male reproductive success and the capacity for females to influence nutrient supply to their litters.  相似文献
