The association and commissural connections between the four cortical areas in water (Natrix sipedon) and garter (Thamnophis sirtalis) snakes were studied by placing lesions on the cortical surface and studying the resulting degeneration in Fink-Heimer preparations. Lateral cortex projects to the outer one third of layer 1 of ipsilateral medial cortex. Dorsal cortex projects to the middle third of layer 1 of ipsilateral medial cortex. Dorsomedial cortex projects bilaterally to the inner third of layer 1 and to layer 3 of me dial cortex. It also projects to layer 1 of contralateral dorsomedial cortex. Medial cortex projects ipsilaterally to each of the other cortical areas. With the apparent exception of the projection of medial cortex to lateral cortex, each projection is organized such that each rostrocaudal segment of a cortical area projects to all segments of the target area lying at the same or more caudal levels.  相似文献

Summary Central connections of the olfactory bulb of Polypterus palmas were studied with the use of horseradish peroxidase and cobalt-tracing techniques. The olfactory bulb projects to subpallial and palliai areas in the ipsilateral telencephalon; a projection to the contralateral subpallium is noted via the habenular commissure. A further target of secondary olfactory fibers is a caudal olfactory projection area in the ipsilateral hypothalamus. No labeling was seen in the anterior commissure and in the contralateral olfactory bulb. The medial and the lateral pallium receive secondary olfactory fibers in distinct areas. Neurons projecting to the bulb are found in the ipsilateral subpallium, mainly in one dorsal longitudinal nucleus. The main connection with the tel- and diencephalon is mediated via the medial olfactory tract. This tract also contains fibers to the contralateral telencephalon, and to the hypothalamus. The smaller lateral olfactory tract mediates fibers to the lateral pallium. The organization of pathways of secondary olfactory fibers in the telencephalon is described. The present findings are compared to those obtained in species possessing an inverted forebrain. This investigation was supported by grants from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft to DLM  相似文献

Binocular depth perception mechanisms in tongue-projecting salamanders   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Tongue-projecting salamanders (Bolitoglossini) combine extreme speed and high precision in prey capture. They possess all requirements for stereoscopic depth perception: frontally oriented eyes, a substantial amount of direct ipsilateral projection in addition to the contralateral one, and binocularly driven neurons. Extracellular recordings were made from retinal afferents in the tectum as well as from the somata of tectal neurons. RF-sizes of afferents and tectal neurons were determined, and the response properties of tectal neurons were tested under monocular and binocular conditions with stimuli of different size and velocity. While RF-sizes and response properties of binocular neurons during binocular and contralateral stimulation were similar, ipsilaterally stimulated neurons exhibited much smaller RFs, lower spike rates and different size preferences.Furthermore, the contralateral retinotectal projection from one eye and the ipsilateral from the other are in register. While retinal afferents are distributed linearly over the tectal surface, most tectal neurons are activated by a retinal area corresponding to the frontal visual field; this results in a magnification of this region. The two monocular receptive fields of binocular neurons exhibit zero disparities (horopter) at distances that coincide with the maximum reach of the tongue. We hypothesize that bolitoglossine salamanders (as well as amphibians in general) make use of two kinds of disparities: (1) between the maps in the left and right tectal hemisphere, coding for the lateral eccentricity of an object, and (2) between the ipsilateral and contralateral retinotectal map, coding for the distance. The presence of substantial direct ipsilateral afferents in bolitoglossine salamanders appears to be the basis for a fast computation of object distance, which is characteristic of these animals.Abbreviations Ax/Ay coordinates of a recorded afference - Nx/Ny coordinates of a recorded neuron - RF receptive field - RFc contralateral receptive field - RFi ipsilateral receptive field - RFx/RFy coordinates of a receptive field center - RGC retinal ganglion cell  相似文献

Summary The retinal efferents of the catfish, Mystus vittatus, were investigated with the use of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique. Most retinal fibres extended contralateral to the eye that had received HRP label, while a few fascicles projected to the ipsilateral side without decussation in the optic chiasma. The contralateral fibres projected to the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the nucleus opticus dorsolateralis, the nucleus of the posterior commissure, the nucleus geniculatus lateralis, pretectal nuclear complex, and to two layers of the optic tectum, i.e., stratum fibrosum et griseum superficiale and stratum griseum centrale. The accessory optic tract arose from the inner area of the optic tract and extended ventromedially to the accessory optic nucleus. The ipsilateral fascicles projected to almost all the above mentioned nuclei, but these projections were comparatively sparse. The ipsilateral retinal projection was restricted to the rostral tectum.  相似文献

The development and regeneration of the ipsilateral retinopetal projection of the nucleus olfactoretinalis (NOR) in the cichlid fish Haplochromis burtoni was studied with 1,1′-dioctadecyl-3,3,3′,3′-tetramethyl indocarbocyanine perchlorate (DiI) in fixed tissue. Through out development most NOR cells projected to the contralateral retina. Only an insignificant, transient elevation of a projection to the ipsilateral retinawas found in a few animals; however, after severing the contralateral processes of NOR cells by either enucleation or nerve crush, many animals had significantly more NOR cells with a regenerated process to the ipsilateral retina. Nevertheless, within a few weeks of surgery, the number of animals with ipsilaterally projecting cells were reduced to control values. The transiently enhanced ipsilateral projections to the retina imply changes in the guiding mechanism after these operations and the existence of control mechanisms against unusual connections to the retina in this bony fish. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Summary Horseradish peroxidase was injected unilaterally into the optic tectum of the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus. The sources of tectal afferents were thereby revealed by retrogradely labeled neurons in various brain centers. Retrogradely labeled cells were seen in both the ipsilateral and contralateral telencephalon. The superficial pretectal area was labeled on both sides of the brain. Ipsilateral projections were also observed coming from the entopeduncular nucleus. Both the anterior thalamic nucleus and the ventro-medial thalamic nucleus projected to the ipsilateral optic tectum. Cells in the ipsilateral nucleus of the posterior commissure were seen to project to the tectum. Labeled fibers were visualized in the lateral geniculate nucleus ipsilateral to the injected tectum, however, no labeled cell bodies were observed. Therefore, tectal cells project to the lateral geniculate nucleus, but this projection is not reciprocal. No labeled cells were found in the cerebellum. Labeled cells occurred in both the ipsilateral and contralateral medial reticular formation; they were also observed in the ipsilateral nucleus isthmi. A projection was seen coming from the dorsal funicular nucleus. Furthermore, labeled cells were shown in the inferior raphe nucleus.Abbreviations AP Area pretectalis - C Cerebellum - DPTN Dorsal posterior tegmental nucleus - H Habenula - IRF Inferior reticular formation - LI Inferior lobe - LGN Lateral geniculate nucleus - LR Lateral recess - MB Mammillary body - MRF Medial reticular formation - MZ Medial zone of the telencephalon - NC Nucleus corticalis - NDL-M Nucleus opticus dorsolateralis/pars medialis - NI Nucleus isthmi - NPC Nucleus of the posterior commissure - OPT Optic tectum - OT Optic tract - PC Posterior commissure - PN Pineal organ - PrOP Preoptic nucleus - PT Pretectum - TBt Tectobulbar tract - TEL Telencephalon - TL Torus longitudinalis - TS Torus semicircularis - VC Valvula cerebelli - VLTN Ventrolateral thalamic nucleus - VMTN Ventromedial thalamic nucleus  相似文献

Retinal projections were experimentally manipulated in a bony fish to reveal conditions under which considerably enlarged ipsilateral projections developed and persisted. Three experimental groups were studied: animals after unilateral enucleation, after unilateral nerve crush, and after enucleation and crush of the remaining optic nerve. At 29 days after unilateral enucleation alone, no enhanced ipsilateral projection had developed. After nerve crush, however, large numbers of retinal fibers regenerated into the ipsilateral tectum. Retrogradely filled, ipsilaterally projecting ganglion cells were distributed throughout the entire retina. After 15 days regenerating retinal fibers covered the entire ipsilateral tectum. At later stages the ipsilateral projection showed progressive reduction in coverage of the tectum. Combining enucleation with nerve crush led to an ipsilateral projection that covered the tectum at 28 days and later. In this experimental situation the development of an ipsilateral projection appears to be a two-step process: (1) Fibers are rerouted to the ipsilateral side at the diencephalon, and (2) ipsilateral fibers persist in the tectum only in the absence of a contralateral projection while they appear to be eliminated in the other cases. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Summary Cobalt fills from small, defined regions of the antenna in D. melanogaster show that the three types of sensilla on the third segment, the flagellum, and a fourth sensillum located in the arista, project into the glomeruli of the antennal lobe. We have identified 19 glomeruli in each lobe, according to their location, shape, and size. At least ten of these represent major projection areas of flagellar or aristal sensilla. The large majority of glomeruli is innervated from both antennae, but a small group of five receive exclusively ipsilateral input. A particular sensory fiber appears to terminate only in one specific glomerulus, either in the ipsilateral or in both lobes. Fills from flagellar regions bearing a single type of sensillum, yield a specific pattern of glomeruli containing stained terminals. Aristal projections remain strictly ipsilateral, whereas those from the other sensilla consist of an ipsilateral and a bilateral component. When filling from different points in an area bearing one type of sensillum, similar projections are produced, suggesting that projection patterns observed reflect predominantly the type of sensillum rather than its location on the flagellum. Accordingly, individual glomeruli might represent functional units, each receiving antennal input in a characteristic combination. We are indebted to Dr. H. Tobler for critical comments. In amphibians and teleosts, retina and tectum grow incongruently. In order to maintain the retinotopy of the retinotectal projection, Gaze, Keating, and Chung (1974) postulated a shifting of terminals throughout growth. In order to test the possibility that ingrowing retinal fibers are the driving force for this shifting, we induced a permanent retinal projection into the ipsilateral tectum in juveniles of the cichlid fish Haplochromis burtoni. The surface of the tectum had increased (11–18 months later) 2.5–5.8 times, and the surface of the retina 8.6–14 times. Filling of ganglion cells with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) retrogradely from the tectum showed ipsilaterally regenerating ganglion cells only in the center of the retina. The position of ganglion cells indicated that the ipsilateral projection derived only from axotomized and regenerating retinal ganglion cells but not from those newly born. Ipsilaterally projecting retinal fibers showed terminals only in the rostral half of the tectum. Comparison of area of terminations of ipsilaterally projecting ganglion cells at various times after the crush provided no evidence for expansion or a shift into caudal tectal areas throughout the period of growth. These findings are compatible with the idea that newly ingrowing fibers induce older terminals to move caudally.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a modification of Kohonen's self-organization map (SOM) algorithm. When the input signal space is not convex, some reference vectors of SOM can protrude from it. The input signal space must be convex to keep all the reference vectors fixed on it for any updates. Thus, we introduce a projection learning method that fixes the reference vectors onto the input signal space. This version of SOM can be applied to a non-convex input signal space. We applied SOM with projection learning to a direction map observed in the primary visual cortex of area 17 of ferrets, and area 18 of cats. Neurons in those areas responded selectively to the orientation of edges or line segments, and their directions of motion. Some iso-orientation domains were subdivided into selective regions for the opposite direction of motion. The abstract input signal space of the direction map described in the manner proposed by Obermayer and Blasdel [(1993) J Neurosci 13: 4114–4129] is not convex. We successfully used SOM with projection learning to reproduce a direction-orientation joint map. Received: 29 September 2000 / Accepted: 7 March 2001  相似文献

Summary Back-labeling of regenerated electromotor neurons in the teleost Sternarchus albifrons was performed to test the hypothesis that, in regenerated spinal cord, incorrectly located electromotor neurons are eliminated because their axons do not reach the correct target area (electric organ). In each cross section examined, all of the regenerated electromotor neurons ipsilateral to the implantation site were labeled with horseradish peroxidase, including those ectopic cells located at the edge of the cord, which are later eliminated by selective cell death. Retrograde labeling of these ectopic neurons demonstrates that their axons do extend into the correct target area (the regenerated electric organ). Thus total misdirection of the axons cannot be the cause of their subsequent cell death. We conclude that selective neuronal death in this system does not reflect the absence of axonal projection to the correct target area.A preliminary report on this work has been presented in Soc. Summary Two types of central neurons in the antennal lobe of the American cockroach Periplaneta americana were labeled with a combination of two specific markers. Their synaptic contacts were characterized and their distribution on the neurons examined. A uniglomerular pheromone-sensitive projection neuron with dendritic arbor in the male-specific macroglomerulus (attractant neuron) was characterized physiologically by intracellular recording and then filled with biocytin, which was converted to a marker for this individual neuron by a preembedding procedure. In a postembedding procedure local, multiglomerular interneurons were marked by immunogold labeling of GABA. Two kinds of synaptic contacts were found on the attractant neuron. (i) Input synapses from GABA-immunoreactive profiles. There were many of these, which (together with results of previous studies) suggests that local interneurons mediate polysynaptic transmission from antennal receptor fibers to the projection neuron. (ii) Output synapses onto GABA-immunoreactive profiles and onto non-identified neurons. These contacts indicate that signals generated by the projection neurons in a given glomerulus are passed back to multiglomerular interneurons and hence are also transmitted to other glomeruli.  相似文献

Efferent projections of the thalamic locomotor region were investigated using the horseradish peroxidase technique of retrograde axonal transport. This enzyme was injected into different brain structures. Function was monitored during a micro-injection into the locomotor areas. It was found that direct descending projections from the hypothalamic locomotor region lead mainly to ipsilateral structures and reach the lumbar sections of the spinal cord. Neurons of the locomotor area of the hypothalamus make their major connections with thelocus coeruleus area and the medial brainstem reticular formation. Projections were observed from the hypothalamic locomotor region to the mesencephalic locomotor area and the locomotor strip.A. A. The substrate selectivity of Candida antarctica lipase for various carboxylic acids was systematically investigated for their condensation with p-methoxyphenethyl alcohol in acetonitrile. The electron density of a carboxylic carbon and the projection area of an acid molecule were numerical indicators for evaluating the substrate selectivity. Both the electron density and projection area had an influence on the V/K m value, while only the projection area affected the K m value. The presence of conjugation with a carboxyl group in an acid and a branched structure in the non-carboxylic region independently lowered the V/K m value by an order of 1.  相似文献

The normal development of the retinal projection was studied in a bony fish with Dil. Between 5.5 and 10 days postfertilization the contralateral retinal projection grows from the rostral pole of the tectum across its center. A maximum of 15 retinal fibers reaches the ipsilateral tectum. In 33-day-old juvenile animals, less than 15 ipsilateral fibers terminate in the entire tectum. Ipsilaterally projecting ganglion cells (maximal number = 20 cells) are scattered throughout the entire retina, and the location of ganglion cells in the retina and axonal terminations in the tectum display a large interindividual variability. This suggests that the small adult contingent of ipsilateral fibers in this bony fish develops without an initial exuberant ipsilateral retinal projection that is later pruned back. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In the retinotectal projection, the Eph receptor tyrosine kinase ligands ephrinA2 and ephrinA5 are differentially expressed not only in the tectum, but also in a high-nasal-to-low-temporal pattern in the retina. Recently, we have shown that retrovirally driven overexpression of ephrinA2 on retinal axons leads to topographic targeting errors of temporal axons in that they overshoot their normal termination zones in the rostral tectum and project onto the mid- and caudal tectum. The behavior of nasal axons, however, was only marginally affected. Here, we show that overexpression of ephrinA5 affects the topographic targeting behavior of both temporal and nasal axons. These data reinforce the idea that differential ligand expression on retinal axons contributes to topographic targeting in the retinotectal projection. Additionally, we found that ectopic expression of ephrinA2 and ephrinA5 frequently leads to pathfinding errors at the chiasm, resulting in an increased stable ipsilateral projection.  相似文献

1. The injection of acetylcholine (ACh) into the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) caused marked hypotensive response in either unanesthetized or anesthetized rats.2. The present experiment was designed to investigate anatomical connections of the ACh injection site in the MPFC with putative autonomic-related brain nuclei, as well as their possible involvement in the mediation of the hypotensive response to ACh.3. For the above purpose, the bidirectional neuronal tracer biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) was injected into Cg1 and Cg3 areas, within the MPFC of male Wistar rats. Five days later the animals were sacrificed and brain slices were processed and analyzed to determine neuronal projections efferent from as well afferent to the MPFC.4. Neuronal staining was more prominent in regions ipsilateral to the BDA injection site. Prominent efferent projections of the MPFC were observed in the contralateral MPFC; ipsi- and contralateral amygdala and hypothalamus; ipsilateral septal area, diagonal band, and zona incerta.5. Similar but not equal patterns of neuronal labeling were observed when BDA injections were performed within the two adjacent MPFC areas. BDA injections centered in the ACh injection site in the Cg3 area caused strong labeling in the septal area and diagonal band as well as an overall hypothalamic labeling. Within the hypothalamus an intense cortical projection was observed in the lateral hypothalamus (LH). BDA injections into the Cg1 area caused a more evident labeling of the amygdaloid complex.6. Neuronal cell bodies were evident throughout the MPFC as well as in the sensory-motor cortex when BDA was injected into the LH, thus indicating a massive ipsilateral cortical projection from the Cg3 to the LH.7. Bilateral NMDA-induced lesions within the LH caused a significant attenuation of the depressor responses to ACh injection in the MPFC, whereas unilateral lesions were marginally effective. These results indicate the involvement of the LH in the mediation of the hypotensive response to ACh injection into the MPFC as well as the bilateral distribution of the hypotensive pathway.  相似文献
