The development of a discharge in a point?plane gap filled with a saline solution with a salt content of 3% was studied experimentally. The duration of the voltage pulse applied to the gap was about 2 ms. Data are presented on the formation dynamics of gas microcavities at near-threshold voltages at which gas-discharge plasma appears in some microcavities. The cavities are conglomerates of microbubbles with a typical size of ≈100 μm. At the threshold voltage (≈750 V), the active electrode is covered with a gas layer and the gap voltage is in fact applied to this layer, which leads to the development of discharges in individual microbubbles. In this case, the discharge operates in the form of short current pulses. The number of microcavities filled with plasma increases as the voltage grows above the threshold value. At the plasma boundary, new microbubbles are formed, in which discharges are ignited. As a result, the plasma front propagates from the active electrode into the gap with a characteristic velocity of 103 cm/s.  相似文献

Pulse-periodic corona discharge in atmospheric air excited by applying a voltage pulse with a subnanosecond or microsecond rise time to a point electrode is studied experimentally. It is shown that, at a voltage rise rate of dU/dt ~1014 V/s, positive and negative ball-shaped streamers with a front velocity of ≥2 mm/ns form near the point electrode. As dU/dt is reduced to 1010?1011 V/s, the streamer shape changes and becomes close to cylindrical. The propagation velocity of cylindrical streamers is found to be ~0.1 mm/ns at dU/dt ~ 2 × 1010 V/s. It is shown that the propagation direction of a cylindrical streamer can be changed by tilting the point electrode, on the axis of which the electric field strength reaches its maximum value. It is established that, for the negative polarity of the point electrode and a microsecond rise time of the voltage pulse, a higher voltage is required to form a cylindrical streamer than for the positive polarity of the point electrode.  相似文献

The microbial composition of acid streamers (macroscopic biofilms) in acidic, metal-rich waters in two locations (an abandoned copper mine and a chalybeate spa) in north Wales was studied using cultivation-based and biomolecular techniques. Known chemolithotrophic and heterotrophic acidophiles were readily isolated from disrupted streamers, but they accounted for only <1 to 7% of the total microorganisms present. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) revealed that 80 to 90% of the microbes in both types of streamers were beta-Proteobacteria. Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of the streamers suggested that a single bacterial species was dominant in the copper mine streamers, while two distinct bacteria (one of which was identical to the bacterium found in the copper mine streamers) accounted for about 90% of the streamers in the spa water. 16S rRNA gene clone libraries showed that the beta-proteobacterium found in both locations was closely related to a clone detected previously in acid mine drainage in California and that its closest characterized relatives were neutrophilic ammonium oxidizers. Using a modified isolation technique, this bacterium was isolated from the copper mine streamers and shown to be a novel acidophilic autotrophic iron oxidizer. The beta-proteobacterium found only in the spa streamers was closely related to the neutrophilic iron oxidizer Gallionella ferruginea. FISH analysis using oligonucleotide probes that targeted the two beta-proteobacteria confirmed that the biodiversity of the streamers in both locations was very limited. The microbial compositions of the acid streamers found at the two north Wales sites are very different from the microbial compositions of the previously described acid streamers found at Iron Mountain, California, and the Rio Tinto, Spain.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of breakdown and the initial stage of a discharge in a long tube (with an interelectrode distance of 40 cm and a diameter of 2.8 cm) at a pressure of ~1 Torr and pulse discharge current of ~10 mA. Breakdown was produced by positive voltage pulses with a linearly growing leading edge with a steepness of dU/dt ~ 106–108 V/s. The time interval between pulses was varied from τ = 0.5 ms to 1 s, the pulse duration being 10 ms. The work was aimed at studying the memory effect of the discharge gap, namely, the influence of the previous pulse on the breakdown characteristics of the next one. In the experiments, the breakdown voltage was measured at different values of dU/dt and τ. It was found that the memory effect was absent at τ ~ 1 s. At the same time, an increase in the breakdown voltage with increasing dU/dt was observed. In the range of τ ≈ 50–200 ms, the breakdown voltage also did not depend on τ, but the memory effect took place. The memory effect in this case consisted in that the breakdown voltage decreased with increasing dU/dt, so that, at dU/dt ~ 107 V/s, the breakdown voltage was two times lower than in the case of τ ~ 1 s. For τ ~ 1–10 ms, the memory effect manifested itself in that the breakdown voltage depended on τ: it could either decrease (the “normal” effect) or increase (the “anomalous” effect) with increasing τ. Breakdown of the discharge gap was preceded by the propagation of an ionization wave, except for the case of small τ values in the domain of existence of the anomalous effect. Estimates allowing one to qualitatively explain the experimental results are made.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of the breakdown stage of a low-pressure discharge (1 and 5 Torr) in a glass tube the length of which (75 cm) is much larger than its diameter (2.8 cm). Breakdowns occurred under the action of positive voltage pulses with an amplitude of up to 9.4 kV and a characteristic rise time of 2–50 μs. The discharge current in the steady-state mode was 10–120 mA. The electrode voltage, discharge current, and radiation from the discharge gap were detected simultaneously. The dynamic breakdown voltage was measured, the prebreakdown ionization wave was recorded, and its velocity was determined. The dependence of the discharge parameters on the time interval between voltage pulses (the socalled “memory effect”) was analyzed. The memory effect manifests itself in a decrease or an increase in the breakdown voltage and a substantial decrease in its statistical scatter. The time interval between pulses in this case can reach 0.5 s. The effect of illumination of the discharge tube with a light source on the breakdown was studied. It is found that the irradiation of the anode region of the tube by radiation with wavelengths of ≤500 nm substantially reduces the dynamic breakdown voltage. Qualitative explanations of the obtained results are offered.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of the structure of an ac surface discharge excited by a metal needle over a plane dielectric surface. A barrier corona discharge was ignited in atmospheric-pressure argon at frequencies of the applied sinusoidal voltage from 50 Hz to 30 kHz. In experiments, the area of a dielectric covered with the discharge plasma increased with applied voltage. The discharge structure in diffuse and streamer modes was recorded using a digital camera and a high-speed image tube operating in a frame mode. It is found that, in the positive and negative half-periods of the applied voltage, the structure of the surface discharge is substantially different. The statistical characteristics of the branching surface streamers in the positive and negative half-periods are determined as functions of the voltage frequency. The most intense lines in the emission spectrum of the barrier corona are determined for both half-periods. The correlation between the dynamics of the emission intensity and the dynamics of the discharge current and voltage is investigated.  相似文献

Axon voltage-clamp simulations. II. Double sucrose-gap method.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文
This is the second in a series of four papers on the simulation of the voltage clamp of cylindrical excitable cells. In this paper we evaluate the double sucrose-gap voltage-clamp technique for the squid and lobster giant axons. Using the Crank-Nicolson method of solution of the cable equations and differential equations representing the voltage clamp circuit we studied the effect of length of the sucrose gap "node" on the voltage profile along an excitable cell during a simulated voltage clamp. The voltage gradients along the region of the cell within the node produce "notches" in the current recording as well as changes in the magnitude of the sodium and potassium current for a given voltage step. Our results show that good voltage clamp control requires node lengths less than one-half the axon diameter.  相似文献

Adult dogwhelks, maintained on mussels for 60 days before experimentation to reduce prior effects of ingestive conditioning and handling skills appropriate to barnacles, and thence deemed “inexperienced”, preferred the largest barnacles presented to them. Juvenile and adult dogwhelks, maintained on barnacles and deemed experienced, preferred barnacles of intermediate sizes that were correlated with the sizes of the dogwhelks. “Inexperienced” dogwhelks penetrated barnacles significantly more often by drilling than by prising, whereas experienced dogwhelks did the reverse. A predominant tendency to prise open barnacles was developed by previously “inexperienced” dogwhelks after they had eaten six to eight consecutive prey. Larger dogwhelks prised open greater proportions of larger barnacles than did smaller dogwhelks. Experienced adult dogwhelks prised open all barnacles of ≈2-mm opercular diameter but only 20% of those ≈ 6 mm in diameter. The preferred barnacles, 4–5 mm in opercular diameter, were of a size that the experienced adult dogwhelks could prise open in 50% of attacks.Dogwhelks inspected barnacles by crawling over them for ≈20 min when the prey were subsequently rejected and ≈30 min when subsequently eaten. Penetration time and ingestion time were linear functions of barnacle diameter, total handling time ranging from 4–26 h for barnacles of 2.5–2.7 mm opercular diameter. Experienced dogwhelks handled barnacles faster than “inexperienced” dogwhelks, largely because they used the quicker method of penetration by prising whenever possible. The yield of flesh per unit handling time was an accelerating function of barnacle size and, with experience, could be increased by a factor of ≈1.2 for barnacles of 7 mm opercular diameter to ≈2.0 for barnacles of 2 mm opercular diameter. The preference of experienced dogwhelks for barnacles somewhat smaller than the largest available, may have reflected the greater frequency with which these prey could be penetrated by the quicker method of prising. Minimizing handling time could be important in nature if there is a risk to feeding dogwhelks of being displaced by competitors. In the laboratory, 12% of dogwhelks where thus displaced.Barnacles of ≈5 mm opercular diameter were estimated to be slightly more profitable than mussels of ≈17.5-mm shell length to a dogwhelk experienced with barnacles, but less profitable to a dogwhelk that has recently fed extensively on mussels. Dogwhelks, therefore, might switch between diets predominately of barnacles or of mussels if prey of comparable profitabilities change drastically in their relative abundance on the shore.  相似文献

Studies of the evolution of elaborate ornaments have concentrated on their role in increasing attractiveness to mates. The classic examples of such sexually selected structures are the elongated tails of some bird species. Elongated tails can be divided into three categories: graduated tails, pin tails and streamers. There seems to be little debate about whether graduated and pin tails are ornaments; i.e. costly signals used in mate choice. However, in the case of streamers there is considerable discussion about their function. It has been suggested that tail streamers could be (i) entirely naturally selected, (ii) entirely sexually selected, (iii) partly naturally and partly sexually selected. The prime example of a species with tail streamers is the swallow (Hirundo rustica) in which both sexes have tail streamers. In this paper we discuss the aerodynamic consequences of different types of manipulation of the streamer and/or outer tail feather. We make qualitative predictions about the aerodynamic performance of swallows with manipulated tail streamers; these predictions differ depending on whether streamers have a naturally or sexually selected function. We demonstrate that these hypotheses can only be separated if tail streamers are shortened and changes in aerodynamic performance measured during turning flight.  相似文献

The photovoltaic absorber Cu2ZnSn(SxSe1–x)4 (CZTSSe) has attracted interest in recent years due to the earth‐abundance of its constituents and the realization of high performance (12.6% efficiency). The open‐circuit voltage in CZTSSe devices is believed to be limited by absorber band tailing caused by the exceptionally high density of Cu/Zn antisites. By replacing Cu in CZTSSe with Ag, whose covalent radius is ≈15% larger than that of Cu and Zn, the density of I–II antisite defects is predicted to drop. The fundamental properties of the mixed Ag‐Cu kesterite compound are reported as a function of the Ag/(Ag + Cu) ratio. The extent of band tailing is shown to decrease with increasing Ag. This is verified by comparing the optical band gap extrapolated from transmission data with the position of the room‐temperature photoluminescence peak; these values converge for the pure‐Ag compound. Additionally, the pinning of the Fermi level in CZTSSe, attributed to heavy defect compensation and band tailing, is not observed in the pure‐Ag compound, offering further evidence of improved electronic structure. Finally, a device efficiency of 10.2% is reported for a device containing 10% Ag (no antireflection coating); this compares to ≈9% (avg) efficiency for the baseline pure‐Cu CZTSe.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that sexual signals can rapidly diverge among closely related species. However, we lack experimental studies to demonstrate that differences in trait‐associated reproductive performance maintain sexual trait differences between closely related populations, in support for a role of sexual selection in speciation. Populations of Northern Hemisphere distributed barn swallows Hirundo rustica are closely related, yet differ in two plumage‐based traits: ventral color and length of the outermost tail feathers (streamers). Here we provide experimental evidence that manipulations of these traits result in different reproductive consequences in two subspecies of barn swallow: (H. r. erythrogaster in North America and H. r. transitiva in the East Mediterranean). Experimental results in Colorado, USA, demonstrate that males with (1) darkened ventral coloration and (2) shortened streamers gained paternity between two successive reproductive bouts. In contrast, exaggeration of both traits improved reproductive performance within H. r. transitiva in Israel: males with a combination treatment of darkened ventral coloration and elongated streamers gained paternity between two successive reproductive bouts. Collectively, these experimental results fill an important gap in our understanding for how divergent sexual selection maintains phenotype differentiation in closely related populations, an important aspect of the speciation process.  相似文献

Sounds produced continuously during flight potentially play important roles in avian communication, but the mechanisms underlying these sounds have received little attention. Adult male Red-billed Streamertail hummingbirds (Trochilus polytmus) bear elongated tail streamers and produce a distinctive 'whirring' flight sound, whereas subadult males and females do not. The production of this sound, which is a pulsed tone with a mean frequency of 858 Hz, has been attributed to these distinctive tail streamers. However, tail-less streamertails can still produce the flight sound. Three lines of evidence implicate the wings instead. First, it is pulsed in synchrony with the 29 Hz wingbeat frequency. Second, a high-speed video showed that primary feather eight (P8) bends during each downstroke, creating a gap between P8 and primary feather nine (P9). Manipulating either P8 or P9 reduced the production of the flight sound. Third, laboratory experiments indicated that both P8 and P9 can produce tones over a range of 700-900 Hz. The wings therefore produce the distinctive flight sound, enabled via subtle morphological changes to the structure of P8 and P9.  相似文献

Hydrodynamic conditions have a significant impact on the biofilm lifecycle. Not well understood is the fact that biofilms, in return, also affect the flow pattern. A decade ago, it was already shown experimentally that under fast flows, biofilm streamers form and oscillate with large amplitudes. This work is a first attempt to answer the questions on the mechanisms behind the oscillatory movement of the streamers, and whether this movement together with the special streamlined form of the streamers, have both a physical and biological benefit for biofilms. In this study, a state of the art two‐dimensional fluid–structure interaction model of biofilm streamers is developed, which implements a transient coupling between the fluid and biofilm mechanics. Hereby, it is clearly shown that formation of a Kármán vortex street behind the streamer body is the main source of the periodic oscillation of the streamers. Additionally it is shown that the formation of streamers reduces the fluid forces which biofilm surface experiences. Biotechnol. Bioeng. 2010; 105: 600–610. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Mixed population biofilms consisting of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, P. fluorescens, and Klebsiella pneumoniae were grown in a flow cell under turbulent conditions with a water flow velocity of 18 cm/s (Reynolds number, Re, =1192). After 7 days the biofilms were patchy and consisted of cell clusters and streamers (filamentous structures attached to the downstream edge of the clusters) separated by interstitial channels. The cell clusters ranged in size from 25 to 750 microm in diameter. The largest clusters were approximately 85 microm thick. The streamers, which were up to 3 mm long, oscillated laterally in the flow. The motion of the streamers was recorded at various flow velocities up to 50.5 cm/s (Re 3351) using confocal scanning laser microscopy. The resulting time traces were evaluated by image analysis and fast Fourier transform analysis (FFT). The amplitude of the motion increased with flow velocity in a sigmoidal shaped curve, reaching a plateau at an average fluid flow velocity of approximately 25 cm/s (Re 1656). The motion of the streamers was possibly limited by the flexibility of the biofilm material. FFT indicated that the frequency of oscillation was directly proportional to the average flow velocity (u(ave)) below 9.5 cm/s (Re 629). At u(ave) greater than 9.5 cm/s, oscillation frequencies were above our measurable frequency range (0.12-6.7 Hz). The oscillation frequency was related to the flow velocity by the Strouhal relationship, suggesting that the oscillations were possibly caused by vortex shedding from the upstream biofilm clusters. A loss coefficient (k) was used to assess the influence of biofilm accumulation on pressure drop. The k across the flow cell colonized with biofilm was 2.2 times greater than the k across a clean flow cell.  相似文献

Recent studies have suggested that the proximal part of the swallow (Hirundo rustica) tail streamer appears to aid turning flight, as expected if streamers evolved initially purely through natural selection for enhanced manoeuvrability. However, the evolution of slender aerodynamically advantageous streamers is also predicted by an alternative hypothesis, which suggests that such a trait could develop primarily to ameliorate the aerodynamic cost of a long size-dimorphic tail. To distinguish between these hypotheses, we have investigated for the effect on manoeuvrability of trimming the tips of the outer tail feathers into short streamers, without lengthening these feathers, in two streamerless hirundine species--the house martin (Delichon urbica) and the sand martin (Riparia riparia). This allowed us to examine the aerodynamic costs and benefits of streamers at an early evolutionary stage that predates elongation of the outermost tail feathers through female choice. We showed that such initial streamers enhance manoeuvrability in streamerless hirundines, confirming the findings of recent studies. However, in contrast to these studies, we showed that improved manoeuvrability resulting from streamers could arise before the outermost tail feathers have become elongated (e.g. owing to female choice). The occurrence of such an aerodynamic advantage depends on the ancestral shape of a forked tail. This provides support for the hypothesis that streamers, like those in the barn swallow, might evolve initially purely through natural selection for enhanced manoeuvrability.  相似文献

A discharge operating in a 80-cm-long discharge tube with an inner diameter of 15 mm, filled with a 3 : 1 neon–argon mixture at a pressure of 1 Torr, was investigated experimentally. Square voltage pulses with a period of 1 s were supplied to one of the tube electrodes, the second electrode being ungrounded. The initial stage of breakdown—the primary breakdown between the high-voltage (active) electrode and the tube wall, accompanied by the propagation of the prebreakdown ionization wave—was the same as in the conventional scheme with a grounded low-voltage electrode. Since the discharge gap was not closed, the discharge was not ignited. An essentially new effect was observed after the end of the voltage pulse. After a certain time interval, voltage spikes of opposite polarity, the amplitude and shape of which were close to those observed during the primary breakdown, appeared in the voltage and current waveforms of the active electrode. Simultaneously, a radiation pulse from the region adjacent to the active electrode was observed and an ionization wave began to propagate toward the second electrode. This work is dedicated to investigating this effect (which was named “reverse breakdown”) and analyzing its mechanism. A conclusion is made on the similarity of this phenomenon to the processes occurring in atmospheric-pressure dielectric barrier discharges.  相似文献

The dynamics of the spatial structure of the plasma of pulsed discharges in air and nitrogen in a nonuniform electric field and their erosion effect on the plane anode surface were studied experimentally. It is established that, at a nanosecond front of the voltage pulse, a diffuse discharge forms in the point cathode–plane anode gap due to the ionization wave propagating from the cathode. As the gap length decreases, the diffuse discharge transforms into a spark. A bright spot on the anode appears during the diffuse discharge, while the spark channel forms in the later discharge stage. The microstructure of autographs of anode spots and spark channels in discharges with durations of several nanoseconds is revealed. The autographs consist of up to 100 and more microcraters 5–100 μm in diameter. It is shown that, due to the short duration of the voltage pulse, a diffuse discharge can be implemented, several pulses of which do not produce appreciable erosion on the plane anode or the soot coating deposited on it.  相似文献
