A numerical model of a spark discharge propagating along the ground surface from the point at which an ∼100-kA current pulse is input into the ground has been developed based on experiments in which the velocity of a long leader was measured as a function of the leader current. The results of numerical simulations are in good agreement with the measured characteristics of creeping discharges excited in field experiments by using a high-power explosive magnetic generator. The reason why the length of a spark discharge depends weakly on the number of simultaneously developing channels is found. Analysis of the influence of the temporal characteristics of the current pulse on the parameters of the creeping spark discharge shows that actual lighting may exhibit similar behavior.  相似文献

The results of the experimental studies of a spark discharge in the point-to-plane geometry in argon at a discharge current limited by a large ballast resistor are presented. A microstructure of a low-current spark discharge representing a formation consisting of a set of micron-size current filaments inside a spark current channel has been revealed.  相似文献

Results of studies of a spark discharge initiated in argon in a point–plane electrode gap with limitation of the discharge current by a large ballast resistance are presented. It is shown that the current flowing through the plasma channel of such a low-current spark has the form of periodic pulses. It is experimentally demonstrated that, when a low-current spark transforms into a constricted glow discharge, current pulses disappear, the spatial structure of the cathode glow changes abruptly, and a brightly glowing positive plasma column forms in the gap.  相似文献

With the proper stabilization of a negative corona, it is possible to increase the threshold current at which the corona discharge in the point-plane gap in air transforms into a spark. Then, in the current range corresponding to the transition region between the corona discharge and the spark, a new type of discharge arises—an atmospheric-pressure diffuse glow discharge. The transformation of the negative corona into a glow discharge and then into a spark is accompanied by the rearrangement of the discharge structure. The experiments show that, as the corona current increases, the radial current profile at the anode shrinks and the glow diameter near the anode increases. The radial profiles of the current and the corona glow during the transition to a glow discharge are measured. The longitudinal structure of the corona is computed using a 1.5-dimensional model that, unlike the other available models, includes gas ionization in the drift region of the corona. The experimental data are used to determine the effective cross section of the current channel at the anode. The radial glow profile near the anode is calculated using the measured current profile and assuming that the field profile is parabolic.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies and numerical simulations of a spark discharge excited in a short point-plane gap filled with atmospheric-pressure nitrogen. The discharge was powered from a high-voltage source connected to the discharge gap through a large ballast resistance. In this case, a short-term spark develops only due to the charging of the stray capacitance of the external circuit; therefore, the energy released by the spark and its intensity are both low. Rapid current growth in a weak spark is accompanied by the contraction of the current channel rather than by its gasdynamic expansion, as it occurs in long-duration kiloampere sparks. Simulations show that, because of the very short spark lifetime, the plasma in a weak spark is substantially nonequilibrium and the gas temperature is fairly high.  相似文献

The dynamics of the spatial structure of the plasma of pulsed discharges in air and nitrogen in a nonuniform electric field and their erosion effect on the plane anode surface were studied experimentally. It is established that, at a nanosecond front of the voltage pulse, a diffuse discharge forms in the point cathode–plane anode gap due to the ionization wave propagating from the cathode. As the gap length decreases, the diffuse discharge transforms into a spark. A bright spot on the anode appears during the diffuse discharge, while the spark channel forms in the later discharge stage. The microstructure of autographs of anode spots and spark channels in discharges with durations of several nanoseconds is revealed. The autographs consist of up to 100 and more microcraters 5–100 μm in diameter. It is shown that, due to the short duration of the voltage pulse, a diffuse discharge can be implemented, several pulses of which do not produce appreciable erosion on the plane anode or the soot coating deposited on it.  相似文献

Experimental study on the development of the spark channel from the anode needle under pulsed electrical breakdown of isopropyl alcohol solution in water with air microbubbles has been performed. The presence of the microbubbles increases the velocity of the spark channel propagation and increases the current in the discharge gap circuit. The observed rate of spark channel propagation in microbubble liquid ranges from 4 to 12 m/s, indicating the thermal mechanism of the spark channel development in a microbubble liquid.  相似文献

It is commonly accepted that, as the current increases, a diffuse negative corona inevitably goes over to a strongly nonuniform and nonsteady spark discharge. In this paper, a new effect—the transition of a negative corona to a diffuse glow discharge at atmospheric pressure—is studied experimentally and numerically. The evolution of the corona parameters during the transition to the regime of a glow discharge is traced.  相似文献

Nonstationary processes in atmospheric-pressure glow discharge manifest themselves in spontaneous transitions from the normal glow discharge into a spark. In the experiments, both so-called completed transitions in which a highly conductive constricted channel arises and incomplete transitions accompanied by the formation of a diffuse channel are observed. A model of the positive column of a discharge in air is elaborated that allows one to interpret specific features of the discharge both in the stationary stage and during its transition into a spark and makes it possible to calculate the characteristic oscillatory current waveforms for completed transitions into a spark and aperiodic ones for incomplete transitions. The calculated parameters of the positive column in the glow discharge mode agree well with experiment. Data on the densities of the most abundant species generated in the discharge (such as atomic oxygen, metastable nitrogen molecules, ozone, nitrogen oxides, and negative oxygen ions) are presented.  相似文献

Results are presented from measurements of the discharge current and the factor of the discharge gap filling with spark channels during pulsed sliding discharges of opposite polarities in Ne, Ar, and Xe on an aluminum oxide ceramic surface. The measurements were performed in the regime of single pulses of submi-crosecond duration at discharge voltages of 0?C12 kV with two discharge chambers with different thicknesses of the ceramic plate (0.4 and 0.17 cm) and different electrode gap lengths (4 and 10.3 cm) at gas pressures of 30 and 100 kPa. The results obtained for discharges of opposite polarities are compared with one another, and common features of discharges in three gases are revealed. It is shown that the filling of the discharge gap with spark channels in the gases under study is more efficient in the case of the positive polarity of the discharge voltage, except Xe at a pressure of 100 kPa in the electrode gap of length 10.3 cm. The quasi-homogeneous regime of discharge in each of the three gases is attained easier at lower gas pressures. Comparison of the data on the filling factors of the discharge gap and the peak currents of opposite-polarity discharges for each gas at a given pressure indicates that the higher the discharge current, the more densely the discharge gap is filled with spark channels.  相似文献

Experimental results and model concepts concerning the relation between the index K of the interelectrode gap filling with spark channels and the peak current I peak of a single-pulse submicrosecond multichannel complete sliding discharge on an alumina ceramic surface are discussed. The spatial structure of an incomplete discharge at the threshold for the surface spark breakdown of gas is considered. The experiments were performed with three gases, Ne, Ar, and Xe, at pressures of 30 and 100 kPa and opposite polarities of the discharge voltage, with two discharge chambers differing in the geometry of the discharge gap and the thickness of the ceramic plate. It is shown that, although the structure of the incomplete discharge at the threshold for spark breakdown varies from diffuse homogeneous to pronounced filamentary, the dependence \(K\left( {\sqrt[6]{{I_{peak} }}} \right)\) for a complete discharge is close to linear and can be qualitatively explained by the earlier proposed semiempirical model of the time evolution of the structure of a multichannel discharge. In particular, the estimated steepness of the dependence \(K\left( {\sqrt[6]{{I_{peak} }}} \right)\) agrees best with the experimental results when the local density of free electrons at the threshold for spark breakdown is 1016 cm?3 or higher.  相似文献

Experimental data on the spatial structure of a single-pulse sliding discharge in neon at voltages below, equal to, and above the threshold for spark breakdown are discussed. The experiments were carried at gas pressures of 30 and 100 kPa and different polarities of the discharge voltage. Photographs of the plasma structure in two discharge chambers with different dimensions of the discharge zone and different thicknesses of an alumina dielectric plate on the surface of which the discharge develops are inspected. Common features of the prebreakdown discharge and its specific features depending on the voltage polarity and gas pressure are analyzed. It is shown that, at voltages below the threshold for spark breakdown, a low-current glow discharge with cathode and anode spots develops in the electrode gap. Above the breakdown threshold, regardless of the voltage polarity, spark channels directed from the cathode to the anode develop against the background of a low-current discharge.  相似文献

The dynamics of the plasma parameters in a given cross section of a long-lived leader channel in air after a jumplike decrease in the discharge current is simulated numerically with the help of a one-dimensional non-steady-state model constructed with allowance for the dynamics of the energy input into the channel, the expansion of the channel, and the nonequilibrium ionization kinetics in the leader plasma. It is shown that, after a decrease in the current, the electric field in the channel, first, rapidly decreases and, then, increases gradually as the gas cools. The higher the energy input into the discharge before the decrease in the current, the longer the time scale on which the electric field increases. The results of simulations of the electric field in the channel agree with the data from the experimental modeling of the actual leader channel by a short spark.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental studies of a steady-state negative point-to-plane corona in atmospheric-pressure nitrogen at anomalously high (milliampere) currents. The evolution of the corona glow with increasing discharge current is traced up to the corona conversion into a spark. It was found that the structure and current-voltage characteristic of the corona change significantly when the working gas is slowly blown trough the discharge cell. It is shown that, starting from a current of I≥0.5 mA, a negative corona in a nitrogen flow acts as a streamer corona, whereas there are no streamers in the absence of gas blowing. In contrast to the quadratic dependence of the current versus voltage in a low-current corona, the current-voltage characteristic of a high-current corona is linear. The time evolution of the radial profile of the current density at the anode is studied under different experimental conditions.  相似文献

As was shown earlier for pulsed discharges that occur in electric fields rising with extremely high rates (1018 V/(cm s)) during the pulse rise time, the electron current in a vacuum discharge is lower than the current of runaway electrons in an atmospheric air discharge in a 1-cm-long gap. In this paper, this is explained by that the field emission current from cathode microprotrusions in a gas discharge is enhanced due to gas ionization. This hastens the initiation of explosive electron emission, which occurs within 10–11 s at a current density of up to 1010 A/cm2. Thereafter, a first-type cathode spot starts forming. The temperature of the cathode spot decreases due to heat conduction, and the explosive emission current ceases. Thus, the runaway electron current pulse is similar in nature to the ecton phenomenon in a vacuum discharge.  相似文献

The temporal parameters of a process of vacuum gap commutation under exposure to a nanosecond pulse of laser radiation incident on the cathode has been studied depending on the radiation energy. Based on the experiment data, it is suggested that a glow discharge is initially ignited in electrode erosion products under exposure to the laser pulse, which due to development of the ionization-overheating instability undergoes the contraction of current channel and transits to an arc discharge. With the radiation energy exceeding a threshold value, the radiation (incident on the cathode) accelerates directly the instability development and the glow discharge transition to the arc discharge due to the radiation absorption in the discharge plasma.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental investigations of the dynamics of optical emission from a nanosecond diffuse discharge in a rod-plane electrode system. A study was made of discharges in a 10-cm-long interelectrode gap in atmospheric-pressure air (the cathode being a 1-cm-diameter rod with a bullet-shaped end). The voltage across the discharge gap was 220 kV and the voltage pulse duration was 180 ns, the voltage rise time being 10 ns. In experiments, the discharges were observed to evolve through two stages: the bridging stage and the conduction stage. The bridging stage begins with intense optical emission from the cathode region, the onset of the emission being delayed with respect to the beginning of the voltage pulse. Simultaneously with the onset of optical emission, a displacement current corresponding to the motion of charged particles begins to be generated in the cathode region. The duration of this current corresponds to the time the emission front takes to bridge the gap. As the emission front reaches the anode region, the current increases abruptly, indicating the beginning of the conduction stage. It was found that the time delay of optical emission relative to the beginning of the voltage pulse largely governs the discharge parameters: as the time delay becomes longer, the emission front velocity in the bridging stage increases from 0.6 to 1.5 cm/ns, the probability of realizing a multichannel structure of the discharge becomes higher, and the discharge current and the intensity of X-ray emission from the discharge grow.  相似文献

An unsteady discharge of a relativistic vacuum diode is studied analytically. The amplitude and rise time of the discharge current pulse are determined as functions of the input parameters of the problem. It is found that, in a nonrelativistic limit, the maximum attainable amplitude of the discharge current pulse is equal to JAlim = 9/4JCL, where JCL is the vacuum-diode limiting current prescribed by the 3/2 law. The parameters of the dipole moment of the layer formed above the grid anode are found in the nonrelativistic limit.  相似文献

Numerical simulations of a negative corona in air demonstrate that the experimentally observed regime of self-oscillations, known as Trichel pulses, is well described by a three-dimensional axisymmetric model that is based on the standard transport equations and in which only the ion-induced secondary electron emission at the cathode is taken into account. The quantitative difference between the measured and calculated values of the mean current and the pulse repetition rate most likely stems from the insufficiently large dimensions of the computation region and from the fact that the point shape adopted in simulations somewhat inexactly conforms to that used in experiments. It was found that the transverse discharge structure near the cathode radically changes during the pulse. Specifically, as the current grows, a cathode sheath forms at the discharge axis and expands over the cathode surface. When the current falls off, the cathode sheath is rapidly destroyed; as a result, the characteristic field structure is well defined only near the discharge axis and becomes virtually indistinguishable as the current decreases by an order of magnitude.  相似文献

The processes of ion flux formation in the plasma of a high-current vacuum spark were investigated experimentally. It is shown that multicharged ions are generated in the neck formed in the erosion products of the inner electrode. The plasma escaping from the neck region plays a role of a piston dragging particles of the cold peripheral plasma into ambient space. As the discharge current increases, the flux of the evaporated electrode material grows, the degree of ionization of the plasma produced decreases, and the efficiency of plasma heating caused by the pinching effect is reduced.  相似文献
