An investigation into the influence of low temperature thermo-chemical pretreatment on sludge reduction in a semi-continuous anaerobic reactor was performed. Firstly, effect of sludge pretreatment was evaluated by COD solubilization, suspended solids reduction and biogas production. At optimized condition (60 °C with pH 12), COD solubilization, suspended solids, reduction and biogas production was 23%, 22% and 51% higher than the control, respectively. Secondly, semi-continuous process performance was studied in a lab-scale semi-continuous anaerobic reactor (5 L), with 4 L working volume. With three operated SRTs, the SRT of 15 days was found to be most appropriate for economic operation of the reactor. Combining pretreatment with anaerobic digestion led to 80.5%, 117% and 90.4% of TS, SS and VS reduction respectively, with an improvement of 103% in biogas production. Thus, low temperature thermo-chemical can play an important role in reducing sludge production.  相似文献

Three pretreatment methods were compared based on their ability to increase the extent and rate of anaerobic bioconversion of pulp mill secondary sludge to biogas. The pretreatment technologies used in these experiments were: (i) thermal pretreatment performed at 170 °C; (ii) thermochemical (caustic) pretreatment performed at pH 12 and 140 °C; and (iii) sonication performed at 20 kHz and 1 W mL−1. Sludge samples were obtained from a sulfite and a kraft pulp mill, and biochemical methane potential (BMP) assays were performed using microbial granules obtained from a high-rate anaerobic digester operating at a pulp mill. Biogas production from untreated sludge was 0.05 mL mg−1 of measured chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 0.20 mL mg−1 COD for kraft and sulfite sludge, respectively. Thermal pretreatment had the highest impact on sludge biodegradability. In this case, biogas yield and production rate from sulfite sludge increased by 50% and 10 times, respectively, while biogas yield and production rate from kraft sludge increased by 280% and 300 times, respectively. Biogas yield correlated to soluble carbohydrate content better than soluble COD.  相似文献

Effects of different pretreatment methods on sludge dewaterability and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) degradation during petrochemical sludge anaerobic digestion were studied. Results showed that the total biogas production volume in the thermal pretreatment system was 4 and 5 times higher than that in the ultrasound pretreatment and in the control system, and the corresponding volatile solid removal efficiencies reached 28%, 15%, and 8%. Phenanthrene, paranaphthalene, fluoranthene, benzofluoranthene, and benzopyrene removal rates reached 43.3%, 55.5%, 30.6%, 42.9%, and 41.7%, respectively, in the thermal pretreatment system, which were much higher than those in the ultrasound pretreatment and in the control system. Moreover, capillary suction time (CST) of sludge increased after pretreatment, and then reduced after 20 days of anaerobic digestion, indicating that sludge dewaterability was greatly improved after anaerobic digestion. The decrease of protein and polysaccharide in the sludge could improve sludge dewaterability during petrochemical sludge anaerobic digestion. This study suggested that thermal pretreatment might be a promising enhancement method for petrochemical sludge solubilization, thus contributing to degradation of the PAHs, biogas production, and improvement of dewaterability during petrochemical sludge anaerobic digestion.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion is generally considered to be an economic and environmentally friendly technology for treating waste activated sludge, but has some limitations, such as the time it takes for the sludge to be digested and also the ineffectiveness of degrading the solids. Various pre-treatment technologies have been suggested to overcome these limitations and to improve the biogas production rate by enhancing the hydrolysis of organic matter. This paper studies the use of peracetic acid for disintegrating sludge as a pre-treatment of anaerobic digestion. It has been proved that this treatment effectively leads to a solubilisation of organic material. A maximum increase in biogas production by 21% is achieved. High dosages of PAA lead to a decrease in biogas production. This is due to the inhibition of the anaerobic micro-organisms by the high VFA-concentrations. The evolution of the various VFAs during digestion is studied and the observed trends support this hypothesis.  相似文献

Microwave (MW) irradiation is a relatively new possibility of conditioning and pretreating for wastewater sludge. Following its application in the telecommunications and food-industries, the environmental use of this technique has come into the limelight in recent years, and has become increasingly popular. Various publications have dealt with the examination of the effects of MW irradiation in municipal sludge-handling processes. We focused on the effects of MW irradiation at different power levels on solubilization (sCOD/tCOD), biodegradation and anaerobic digestion of sludge from the food-industry. For evaluating the efficiency of MW pre-treatment, the changes in the soluble fraction of the organic matter, the VS/TS ratio, the biogas yield, the methane content in the biogas, and the rate of batch mesophilic digestion were used as control parameters. Additionally, the energetic efficiency of MW pre-treatment was also examined. The results were compared with those of conventional heat (CH) treatments of the same sludge. The MW treatment proved to increase both the sCOD/tCOD and the VS/TS ratio. Furthermore, the biogas and methane yields increased during the digestion of the MW-pretreated food-industry sludge. A higher MW power level generally enhanced the biogas and methane production. Energetically, the most economic pre-treatment of sludge from dairy and meat processing was at a power level of 1.5 Wg−1 and 2.5 Wg−1 MW respectively; the surplus energy content of the enhanced biogas product could not compensate the extra energy demand of the stronger MW pre-treatments.  相似文献

During wastewater treatment, most organic matter is transferred to a solid phase commonly known as sludge or biosolids. The high cost of sludge management and the growing interest in alternative energy sources have prompted proposals for different strategies to optimize biogas production during anaerobic sludge treatment. Because of the high solid content and complex structure of sludge-derived organic matter, methane production during digestion is limited at the hydrolysis step. Therefore, large digester volume and long retention times of over 20 days are necessary to achieve adequate stabilization. Pre-treatments can be used to hydrolyze sludge and consequently improve biogas production, solids removal and sludge quality after digestion. This paper reviews the main pre-treatment processes, with emphasis on the most recent developments. An overview of the different technologies is presented, discussing their effects on sludge properties and anaerobic digestion. Future challenges and concerns related to pre-treatment assessment and implementation are also addressed.  相似文献

Recently, anaerobic degradation has become a prevalent alternative for the treatment of wastewater and activated sludge. Consequently, the anaerobic biodegradability of recalcitrant compounds such as some surfactants require a thorough study to avoid their presence in the environment. In this work, the anaerobic biodegradation of amine-oxide-based surfactants, which are toxic to several organisms, was studied by measuring of the biogas production in digested sludge. Three amine-oxide-based surfactants with structural differences in their hydrophobic alkyl chain were tested: Lauramine oxide (AO-R12), Myristamine oxide (AO-R14) and Cocamidopropylamine oxide (AO-cocoamido). Results show that AO-R12 and AO-R14 inhibit biogas production, inhibition percentages were around 90%. AO-cocoamido did not cause inhibition and it was biodegraded until reaching a percentage of 60.8%. Otherwise, we fitted the production of biogas to two kinetic models, to a pseudo first-order model and to a logistic model. Production of biogas during the anaerobic biodegradation of AO-cocoamido was pretty good adjusted to the logistics model. Kinetic parameters were also determined. This modelling is useful to predict their behaviour in wastewater treatment plants and under anaerobic conditions in the environment.  相似文献

A biological pretreatment with new complex microbial agents was used to pretreat corn straw at ambient temperature (about 20°C) to improve its biodegradability and anaerobic biogas production. A complex microbial agent dose of 0.01% (w/w) and pretreatment time of 15 days were appropriate for biological pretreatment. These treatment conditions resulted in 33.07% more total biogas yield, 75.57% more methane yield, and 34.6% shorter technical digestion time compared with the untreated sample. Analyses of chemical compositions showed 5.81-25.10% reductions in total lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose contents, and 27.19-80.71% increases in hot-water extractives; these changes contributed to the enhancement of biogas production. Biological pretreatment could be an effective method for improving biodegradability and enhancing the highly efficient biological conversion of corn straw into bioenergy.  相似文献

The effect of combination of mechanical and chemical pretreatment of municipal waste activated sludge (WAS) prior to anaerobic digestion was studied using a laboratory scale system with an objective to decrease volatile sulfur compounds in biogas and digested sludge. Mechanical pretreatment was conducted using depressurization of WAS through a valve from a batch pretreatment reactor pressurized at 75 ± 1 psi, while combined pretreatments were conducted using six different dosages of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and ferrous chloride (FeCl2) along with mechanical pretreatment. About 37-46% removal of H2S in biogas occurred for different combined pretreatment conditions. Sludge solubilization achieved due to the mechanical pretreatment increased total cumulative methane production by 8-10% after 30 days during the biochemical methane potential (BMP) test. The pretreatment also improved dewaterability in terms of time to filter (TTF), and decreased methyl mercaptan generation potential of the digested sludge.  相似文献

Enhanced biomethanation of kitchen waste by different pre-treatments   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Five different pre-treatments were investigated to enhance the solubilisation and anaerobic biodegradability of kitchen waste (KW) in thermophilic batch and continuous tests. In the batch solubilisation tests, the highest and the lowest solubilisation efficiency were achieved with the thermo-acid and the pressure-depressure pre-treatments, respectively. However, in the batch biodegradability tests, the highest cumulative biogas production was obtained with the pressure-depressure method. In the continuous tests, the best performance in terms of an acceptable biogas production efficiency of 60% and stable in-reactor CODs and VFA concentrations corresponded to the pressure-depressure reactor, followed by freeze-thaw, acid, thermo-acid, thermo and control. The maximum OLR (5 g COD L−1 d−1) applied in the pressure-depressure and freeze-thaw reactors almost doubled the control reactor. From the overall analysis, the freeze-thaw pre-treatment was the most profitable process with a net potential profit of around 11.5 € ton−1 KW.  相似文献

The increase in the number of wastewater treatment plants and the quality required for the residue produced makes it necessary to improve the efficiency of anaerobic digestion of sludge. Pretreatments of secondary sludge have shown important advantages in the elimination of volatile solids and pathogenic microorganisms from the sludge, and they have also had a positive effect on biogas production. However, such methods are associated with high operating costs. This paper shows the behavior of a autohydrolysis pretreatment, which consists of subjecting the secondary sludge to a temperature of 55 °C for 12–24 h with a limited amount of oxygen under batch operation. The pretreatment results in a high solubilization of organic matter, increasing the fluidity of the sludge and improving the biogas production. This study focuses on the evaluation of the influence of oxygen and the initial sludge concentration on the pretreatment behavior. The main results obtained showed that when autohydrolysis pretreatment was carried out for 12 h, with a high solid concentration and microaerobic conditions, the solubilization of organic matter was increased by 40%, the methane productivity was improved by 23%, and there was an overall improvement in sludge fluidity. Moreover, the energy assessment of the autohydrolysis pretreatment and anaerobic digestion system showed the energetic feasibility of this treatment method, since the increase in energy production compensates for the extra energy required to carry out the pretreatment.  相似文献

Anaerobic co-digestion of fruit and vegetable waste (FVW) and activated sludge (AS) was investigated using anaerobic sequencing batch reactors (ASBRs). The effects of AS:FVW ratio and the organic loading rate (OLR) on digesters performances were examined. The mixtures having AS:FVW ratios of 100:00, 65:35, 35:65, by a total solid (TS) basis were operated at an hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 20d. However, 30:70, 20:80, 15:85, 10:90 and 0:100 ratios were tested at an HRT of 10d. To investigate effects of aerobic and anaerobic digestion on the sludge filterability, specific resistance to filtration (R) was also determined. Increasing FVW proportions in the feedstock significantly improved the biogas production yield. The reactor that was fed with a 30:70 ratio showed the highest VS removal and biogas production yield of 88% and 0.57 L g(-1) VS added, respectively. The filterability results showed that the anaerobic effluent was characterised by a slightly better filterability efficiency of 1.6 x 10(16) m kg(-1) than 1.74 x 10(16) m kg(-1) of aerobic effluent. However, FVW addition improved the anaerobic co-digestion effluent filterability (5.52 x 10(14) m kg(-1)).  相似文献

The effect of ultrasound and gamma-irradiation used as pre-treatments for the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge at both mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures was examined. Untreated activated sludge was also subjected to anaerobic digestion at these temperatures as a control. The sonication time was 90 s using a Soniprep 150 (MSE Scientific Instruments) which operated at 23 kHz and had been adjusted to give an output of 47 W and the gamma-irradiation dose was 500 krad. The digesters were operated in a semi-continuous mode, being fed with fresh sludge every 24 h at hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 8, 10 and 12 days. Over the 24 h period the differences between the digesters, in terms of volatile solids (VS) reductions and biogas production, were not statistically significant for any particular set of conditions. Thermophilic digestion performed better than mesophilic digestion in terms of biogas production, VS reductions (except at HRT of 8 days) and specific methane yields and the optimum retention time was 10 days, at both temperatures. When gas production over the initial eight hours (probably the hydrolytic stage) was examined, it was found that the gas production rates for pre-treated sludges were higher than those for untreated sludges. This was most pronounced at thermophilic temperatures and a HRT of 10 days. Sonication did not affect the numbers of faecal coliforms in the sludge. However, gamma-radiation caused a 3-log reduction and, when coupled with mesophilic digestion, gave a product which contained < 100 g(-1) TS. Thermophilic anaerobic digestion produced sludges which contained < 1 g(-1) TS irrespective of any pre-treatment.  相似文献

This report presents a new approach to studying the metabolic and kinetic properties of anaerobic sludge from single batch experiments. The two main features of the method are that the methane production is measured on-line with a relatively cheap system, and that the methane production data can be plotted as rate vs time curves. The case studies of specific methanogenic activity, biodegradability and toxicity tests here presented show that very accurate kinetic data can be obtained. The method is specifically useful in experiments in which strong changes in methane production occur, and it is proposed as a powerful tool to study methanogenic systems. Furthermore, the method is simple and could be implemented by industry in the routine analysis of sludge.  相似文献

In this study, microwave treatment is analyzed as a way to accelerate the hydrolysis in anaerobic digestion of municipal wastewater sludge. The influence of the absorbed energy, power and athermal microwave effect on organic matter solubilization and biogas production has been studied. In addition, a novel method that considers the absorbed energy in the microwave system is proposed, in order to obtain comparable experimental results. The absorbed energy is calculated from an energy balance. The highest solubilization was achieved using 0.54 kJ/ml at 1000 W, where an increment of 7.1% was observed in methane production, compared to the untreated sample. Using a higher energy value (0.83 kJ/ml), methane production further increased (to 15.4%), but solubilization decreased. No power influence was found when 0.54 kJ/ml was applied at 1000, 600 and 440 W. Microwave heating was compared to conventional heating in two different experimental setups, providing similar methane yields in all cases.  相似文献

Electrolysis-enhanced anaerobic digestion of wastewater   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study demonstrates enhanced methane production from wastewater in laboratory-scale anaerobic reactors equipped with electrodes for water electrolysis. The electrodes were installed in the reactor sludge bed and a voltage of 2.8-3.5 V was applied resulting in a continuous supply of oxygen and hydrogen. The oxygen created micro-aerobic conditions, which facilitated hydrolysis of synthetic wastewater and reduced the release of hydrogen sulfide to the biogas. A portion of the hydrogen produced electrolytically escaped to the biogas improving its combustion properties, while another part was converted to methane by hydrogenotrophic methanogens, increasing the net methane production. The presence of oxygen in the biogas was minimized by limiting the applied voltage. At a volumetric energy consumption of 0.2-0.3 Wh/LR, successful treatment of both low and high strength synthetic wastewaters was demonstrated. Methane production was increased by 10-25% and reactor stability was improved in comparison to a conventional anaerobic reactor.  相似文献

Design, construction, and starting-up of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor was carried out. This system was proposed for excess sludge stabilisation, particularly that generated at an activated sludge wastewater treatment facility installed in a sugarcane mill. The upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor built, had a working volume of 22.3 m3and a hydraulic residence time of 22 days. Methane production was at a maximum of 79% volume with an average of 60% for this treatment. For starting up the anaerobic reactor, a suitable inoculum from a neighboring plant was used. As the waste characteristics in both plants were different, an acclimation procedure was followed to achieve granulation. Control and stability of anaerobic reactions were monitored with alkalinity data, using the so-called ‘alfa alkalinity’ to try to keep its value at around 0.4. Once pseudosteady-state conditions were reached (chemical oxygen demand reduction and methane-rich biogas production within ±10 percent), the organic load was steadily increased up to feeding 100% excess sludge. The UASB reactor used to stabilise the excess biomass generated a sludge with a much lower volume than that originally fed. Its design ensured adequate hydraulic flow and biogas production with a high methane content. The bacteria were attached constituting spheres and very minor maintenance operations were required.  相似文献

The effect of the inoculum source on the digestion of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) under anaerobic conditions has been investigated. The potential for primary and ultimate LAS biodegradation of anaerobic sludge samples obtained from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) of different geographical locations was studied applying a batch test system. It was found that only 4–22% of the LAS added to the batch anaerobic digesters was primarily transformed suggesting a poor primary degradation of the LAS molecule in anaerobic discontinuous systems. Regarding ultimate biodegradation, the addition of LAS to the batch anaerobic digesters caused a reduction on the extent of biogas production. Significant differences in the inhibition extent of the biogas production were observed (4–26%) depending on the sludge used as inoculum. Effect of the surfactant on the anaerobic microorganisms was correlated with its concentration in the aqueous phase. Sorption of LAS on anaerobic sludge affects its toxicity by depletion of the available fraction of the surfactant. LAS content on sludge was related to the total amount of calcium and magnesium extractable ions. The presence of divalent cations promote the association of LAS with anaerobic sludge reducing its bioavailability and the extent of its inhibitory effect on the biogas production.  相似文献

Summary Wastewater sludge is a complex raw material for fermentation and requires pre-treatment in order to transform less biodegradable compounds into more easily degradable ones. In this study, sludge was treated by thermo-alkaline and oxidative pre-treatment methods and subjected to Bacillus thuringiensis fermentation in bench scale fermentors under controlled conditions. Thermo-alkaline treatment was found to be an effective process in order to enhance the entomotoxicity tested against spruce budworm. The total cell and spore counts were improved by 40 and 46%, respectively as compared to that using the untreated sludge. The final entomotoxicity potency increased from 12.3 × 109 SBU/l of the raw sludge to 16.6 × 109 SBU/l of the thermo-alkaline pre-treated sludge. The improvement of the process performance was attributed to a better oxygen transfer due to decrease in media viscosity and an improvement of nutrient availability due to the sludge solubilization and biodegradability.  相似文献

The use of carbon-based conductive materials has been shown to lead to an increase in biogas and methane yields during anaerobic digestion (AD). The effect of these additives on AD using synthetic substrates has been extensively studied, yet their significance for wastewater sludge digestion has not been adequately investigated. Therefore, the aim of this research was to optimize the concentration of petroleum coke (PC) that is a waste by-product of oil refineries, for the anaerobic digestion of wastewater sludge and investigation of phosphate removal in the AD process in the mesophilic temperature range. According to the results of the experiments, supplementing reactors with PC could significantly improve biogas and methane production. Supplementation of reactors with 1.5 g/L PC led to 23.40 ± 0.26% and 42.55 ± 3.97% increase in biogas production and methane generation, respectively. Moreover, the average volatile solids (VS), phosphate, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removals were 43.43 ± 0.73, 46.74 ± 0.77%, and 60.40 ± 0.38%, respectively.  相似文献
