The present paper presents the first clinical standards for growth velocity in height of Belgian boys and girls, based on purely longitudinal data. Growth charts are provided with centiles of height for age, along with the growth velocity curves of the typical early, average and late maturing child in the population. These new growth velocity standards provide centile lines which allow to judge whether a child's growth velocity over a one-year interval lies within the limits of normal variation for his age, irrespective of his stage of maturation. They also provide information about variability in the individual patterns of growth velocity in the population and can, as such, also be used to evaluate the normality of a child's pattern in growth velocity over a longer period of time. Age at peak velocity occured in 95% of the children within an age range of about 4 years. The average age at peak height velocity at puberty was 14.0 years (S.D.=1.0) in boys and 11.6 years (S.D.=0.9) in girls. Peak height velocity was in the average 9.1 cm/year (S.D.=1.4) in boys and 7.5 cm/year (S.D.=1.1) in girls. The representativity of these new standards with respect to the actual Belgian population was tested by comparison with recent cross-sectional data, collected on a large number of subjects. These new charts will find useful applications in longitudinal health screening surveys, and in clinical follow-up studies, where interest lies in the examination of a child's growth retardation in relation to some disease, or catch-up growth, as a response to subsequent medical treatment.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal growth and bone age (BA) development are the most important clinical parameters for monitoring adequate glucocorticoid replacement in children with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). AIM OF THE STUDY: To analyze the growth pattern of patients treated for CAH of the salt wasting (SW) and simple virilizing (SV) clinical forms; to evaluate final height as compared to reference data and individual target height; to evaluate the course of BA development. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A large database of 598 patients with CAH was created in 5 Central European countries and growth data of 341 treated patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were of Caucasian origin. Centiles were constructed in a cross-sectional manner and an additional longitudinal analysis was performed in order to evaluate the pubertal growth spurt by applying particular statistical methods (Preece-Baines model). RESULTS: The growth of SW CAH patients was impaired in infancy and early childhood (0-3 years of age), but followed normal patterns in childhood until puberty. In contrast, children with SV CAH had normal patterns of growth in infancy and early childhood and were considerably taller than healthy references during childhood. In the longitudinal study, peak height velocity in both boys and girls was normal, but it occurred at an earlier age than in the standard population. The final height of patients with CAH was reduced in comparison to both the reference and the individual target height. No correlations were found between final height and age at the start of the therapy in SV patients or between final height and year of birth. BA was advanced in both types of CAH, but more accelerated in SV patients. CONCLUSION: Characteristic growth patterns for treated SV and SW CAH children were identified, with a normal pubertal growth spurt and reduced final height being observed.  相似文献

Measurement of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) levels is used during the assessment of a child for the presence of growth hormone (GH) deficiency and to monitor the efficacy of GH replacement therapy. In either case, robust normative data are required to allow IGF-I values to be expressed as standard deviation scores, enabling comparison between individuals and assessment of change over time. However, IGF-I levels in healthy children are affected by a number of parameters, including age, gender, pubertal status, height, nutrient intake, body composition, intercurrent illness and ethnicity, and the generation of such data requires the collection of samples from significant numbers of healthy children. As external quality assurance schemes for IGF-I and an international standard based on authentic recombinant IGF-I are not widely used, it is imperative for the clinician to understand the performance characteristics and limitations of the IGF-I assay used and to be aware of the source and quality of control data. It must also be recognized that IGF-I measurement is only one component of the diagnostic process and has its limitations, as tissue sensitivity to circulating serum IGF-I levels will differ between individuals.  相似文献

The purposes of the current study were: (1) to describe growth and physical development and establish norms for schoolchildren from Rostov region in Russia; (2) to compare major characteristics of development between urban and rural children by sex and age.Nearly 200,000 children (198,712) aged between 7 and 17 years from 232 urban and rural schools of Rostov region (Southern Federal District of Russia) participated in the study. School age is a period of intensive growth and physiological and psychological development. Irregularities of personal development are caused by a multitude of factors, such as sex differences, heredity, socio-economic status of a family, standard of living, particular environmental conditions, and lifestyle.It has been established that children from the Southern Federal District of Russia had body mass index values higher than age-appropriate norms for all Russians (Total Russian, Rudnev et al., 2014) and World Health Organization charts. Children from urban settings were taller and heavier than children from rural settings.Sex is one of the most influential factors which play key role in determining specific characteristics of growth and personal development. According to our results, boys and girls both had similar age-related changes in weight and height, but their respective dynamics differed. Girls’ height and weight values accelerated at the age 10 to 12 years and plateaued after the age fourteen, whereas in boys height and weight steadily increased with age, showing slight acceleration at the age 12 to 13 years, and reached a plateau by the age of seventeen.  相似文献

沉水植物的稳定生长是重建健康湖泊生态系统重要环节, 底质条件是沉水植物生长的关键因素。研究通过观测沉水植物生理生态的变化来探讨麦饭石对其影响及作用机理。研究结果表明, 与湖泥组相比, 麦饭石可明显促进沉水植物苦草生长, 覆盖1 cm厚度麦饭石的苦草植株高度、单株生物量优于湖泥组(P<0.05); 改性麦饭石组的苦草株高、单株生物量高于麦饭石原石组(P<0.05)。麦饭石组中两种植物苦草和轮叶黑藻的光合色素、根系活力、丙二醛、过氧化物酶活等指标在一定程度上均优于湖泥组。检测发现麦饭石中含有丰富的植物生长所需的常量和微量元素, 可以明显促进沉水植物生长。可见麦饭石有益于沉水植物生长, 可进一步作为底质改良材料应用于湖泊生态修复工程。  相似文献

An understanding of the hormonal basis of normal growth and development, including the changes occurring at puberty, is important foundation knowledge for contemporary medical practice in most fields of medicine. A quiz, testing the important physiological concepts of growth and puberty, was designed using the format of the well-known television game "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." An evaluation of this formative assessment activity revealed that a cohort of first-year undergraduate medical students valued learning with peers in an enjoyable, interactive environment, where they were able to admit to uncertainties and clarify answers. It also showed that making an educational activity fun need not detract from the focus of giving feedback on learning. Formative assessment, known to produce learning gains in a range of educational settings, is an important activity in contemporary medical education. With a greater emphasis on self-directed learning and less well-defined curriculum boundaries, feedback helps students to understand and apply the important physiological concepts that underpin the practice of medicine.  相似文献

通过青藏高原和安第斯山高原地区儿童青少年身高、体重和胸围的比对,探讨高原地区儿童青少年生长发育的规律和特点,找出儿童青少年生长发育的高原地区差异,进一步改善高原地区居民的健康状态,促进儿童青少年生长发育,为高原医学和高原人类学的发展提供理论基础。本文以青藏高原和安第斯山高原地区儿童青少年为研究对象。选择在西藏出生长大、经体检证明身体健康6-21岁藏族男女(父母3代藏族)共2813例有效样本(男,1417例;女,1396例),在知情同意情况下直接测量了身高、体重和胸围。印度、秘鲁、玻利维亚、智利等国家和地区儿童青少年生长发育资料从文献中获取。去除不完整的无法比较及年代过于久远的材料,排除小样本及数据不全和不符合要求的样本,严格控制质量。所有测量数据输入SPSS13.0统计软件包。对数据进行描述性统计分析、独立样本t检验、方差分析等统计学处理。结果显示:1)青藏高原儿童青少年男女身高高于安第斯山男女。2)青藏高原儿童青少年的体重与安第斯山儿童青少年相近。3)青藏高原儿童青少年的胸围明显小于安第斯山儿童青少年。高原地区与非高原地区儿童青少年生长发育相比有相似性又有特殊性(如发育水平低,胸径较大,生长发育指标普遍低于WHO(2007)和本国国内水平)。西藏藏族儿童青少年比安第斯山的发育好,两者具有不同的体质特征,这可能与生态环境、高原缺氧、遗传因素和社会经济文化等多种因素有关。  相似文献

Comparisons between competing and non-competing sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) populations demonstrate pronounced effects of density on plant height growth, height-to-crown width ratio, and s popuiaUon's height inequality. In the present study, non-destructive measurements of height and the prolected crown area of sunflower plants were taken at seven times from emergence to fruit maturation in even-aged monospeclflc stands with initial densities of 1, 4, 16, and 64 plants/m^2. The mean height of populations Increased and then decreased with increasing population density; the height Inequalities of uncrowded populations decreased during stand growth, whereas the height inequaiiUes of crowded popuisUons decreased first and then increased during stand development. The interindlvidual relationships between the relative height growth rate and height within uncrowded populations became significantly negative during population growth, whereas these relationships were negative first and then became positive during the development of crowded populations. In the uncrowded populations, the static Interindlvldual relationship between height-to-crown width ratio and volume was positive, whereas for the crowded population these relationships became negative with increasing competition for light. The data suggest that the plastic responses of plant height and height-to-crown width ratio to light competition will become more Intense with increasing competition Intensity. The results of the present study argue strongly for the Importance of size-dependent Individual-level plastic responses due to size-asymmetric light competition In generating the variations in population height inequality.  相似文献

Anthropometry has been used for the assessment of growth at different ages. Among the anthropometric measurements, weight, height, arm circumference, and lower and upper limb lengths are of the most important criteria showing the development of children in school age. The aim of the present study was to measure the lengths of upper (arm, forearm, hand) and lower (thigh, leg, foot) limbs of children studying in primary schools of Aydin, a city in the western region of Turkey, and to assess the differences according to the gender (female, male) and living areas (urban, rural). In different age groups, many differences were observed when compared for gender and area. Differences were also seen when compared with the other studies done in different part of Turkey. The data was the first one for the region and it might be useful for further regional studies or for national comparisons. More studies designed with bigger sample sizes that cover many cities belonging to the same region of the country are needed. In addition to cross-sectional studies, longitudinal studies may give more useful knowledge for understanding the growth of children.  相似文献

Human height is an important trait from biological and social perspectives. Genes have been widely recognized to be involved in human body growth, but their detailed controlling mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we present a computational model for functional mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that control trajectories of human height growth through an interactive network. The model integrates mathematical equations of human growth curves into the mixture model-based functional mapping framework, allowing the identification and mapping of individual QTLs responsible for the developmental pattern of human growth. The model was derived on a random sample of subjects from a natural population, for each of which molecular markers within candidate genes or throughout the entire genome are typed and height data from childhood to adulthood are collected. A series of testable hypotheses are formulated about the genetic control of developmental timing and duration at different stages. The model was used to characterize epistatic QTLs for height growth hidden in 548 Japanese girls which is a semi-real data set with simulated the marker genotypes. With an increasing availability of genetic polymorphic data, the model will have great implications for probing the genetic and developmental mechanisms of human body growth and its associated diseases.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo study trends in height of Turkish and Moroccan immigrant children living in The Netherlands, to investigate the association between height and background characteristics in these children, and to calculate height-for-age-references data for these groups.DesignNationwide cross-sectional data collection from children aged 0 to 18 years by trained professionals in 1997 and 2009. The study population consisted of 2,822 Turkish 2,779 Moroccan, and 13,705 Dutch origin children in 1997and 2,548 Turkish, 2,594 Moroccan, and 11,255 Dutch origin children in 2009. Main outcome measures: Mean height in cm, and mean height standard deviation scores.ResultsIn 2009, mean height at the age of 18y was similar for Turkish and Moroccan children: 177 cm for boys and 163 cm for girls, which was 2 to 3 cm taller than in 1997. Still, Turkish and Moroccan adolescents were 5.5 cm (boys) to 7 cm (girls) shorter than their Dutch peers. No significant differences were found in mean height standard deviation scores across the educational level of the parents, geographical region, primary language spoken at home, and immigrant generation.ConclusionsWhile the secular height increase in Dutch children came to a halt, the trend in Turkish and Moroccan children living in The Netherlands continued. However, large differences in height between Turkish and Moroccan children and Dutch children remain. We found no association with the background characteristics. We recommend the use of the new growth charts for children of Turkish and Moroccan origin who have a height-for-age below -2SD on the growth chart for Dutch children.  相似文献

The evergreen oak Quercus glauca often dominates secondary broadleaved forests in Western Japan. It is regarded as a mid-successional species, whose diameter and height growth fall between those of early- and late-successional species. Despite the ecological importance of this evergreen oak in the secondary succession of the evergreen broadleaved forest zone in Japan, tree-felling data that allow estimations of tree mass and leaf area from non-destructive measurements are lacking. This paper provides stem growth data, read from tree rings on disks sampled from 13 Q. glauca stems, and their allometric data. The samples were collected in 1994 from the Ginkakuji-san National Forest, Kyoto City, Japan. Allometric data comprised data on stem age, diameter at breast height, diameter at 10% height, tree height, height of the lowest living branch, height of the lowest living leaf in the crown, volume of the main stem, squared stem diameter just below the lowest living branch, total leaf area of the stem, dry weight of the total leaves, dry weight of all branches, dry weight of the main stem, total aboveground dry weight, mean relative photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) above the crown, mean relative PPFD below the crown, crown projection area, and specific leaf area. These data can be helpful for estimating the biomass and leaf area index of a Q. glauca stand by enabling the derivation of allometric relationships between non-destructive measurements (such as stem diameter at breast height, and tree height) and tree mass or leaf area. Diameters (including bark thickness) at ground height and above (at 0.5- or 1-m intervals) for each stem are also provided. Stem growth data were based on tree-ring reads from disks taken from heights of 0.0 and 0.3 m, and at 0.5-m (stem height <7 m) or 1.0-m (stem height ≥7 m) intervals above that. Stem volume growth derived from these tree-ring data can be converted into stem mass growth if combined with an analysis of the allometric data, which may serve as a useful resource for the estimation of carbon fixation by evergreen oaks in relation to global climate change.  相似文献

Stature is the most often used anthropometric measure in the nutritional, growth and development, anthropological and forensic oriented studies. Its estimate is considered to be an important assessment in the identification of unknown human remains and its medico-legal significance is obvious in forensic examinations. Diurnal variation in stature is a biological norm in the human body and its effects can be reflected in the reliability of height data in these studies. We hypothesize that the extent of diurnal variation is more in children as compared to adults in a population.  相似文献

Abstract Benthic macroinvertebrates are the group of organisms most widely used for assessment of water resources. Rapid assessment approaches are intended to be efficient and cost effective; savings are found in reduced sampling and more efficient data analysis. Rapid bioassessment programmes have been quickly accepted and now cover most of the United States (US) and equivalent programmes cover all of the United Kingdom (UK). Rapid bioassessment programmes are designed to screen large regions, pinpointing trouble spots worthy of more detailed attention. Fundamental to all rapid bioassessment methods is the classification of streams so that comparisons can be made between reference areas and areas of concern, or test sites with similar characteristics. Both the UK and US approaches assess habitat characteristics. These characteristics are used to predict the fauna expected at a test site in the UK approach; in the US they are used as an aid to classification and interpretation of aquatic faunal data. Habitat assessments in the US are also used to determine whether poor water quality or degraded habitat are stressing the invertebrate communities. This is a major development in approaches to water resource assessment. In the UK, a model developed using multivariate statistics uses a few environmental variables thought to be unaffected by human activities to predict the fauna expected at a test site. The US approaches analyse data using several indices (or metrics) presumed to represent ecological features of interest. These indices have a range of sensitivities to different kinds of stress and must be calibrated for the area of interest. The two approaches have been developed in isolation but may have much to offer each other. Developing programmes are advised to consider both. Future needs include: development of procedures that can be applied to large rivers and to lakes; further refinement of ecological principles underlying metric choice; the inclusion of chemical criteria and toxicity tests to establish thresholds that indicate impairment; and development of criteria indicating the necessity for implementation of quantitative assessment studies.  相似文献

The development of a new system for medical database application running on minicomputer under MUMPS system is described. Two kinds of data representation in global structure are briefly reviewed. The use of a subject oriented multi-dimensional data structure greatly simplifies database design and facilitates data manipulation, organization, selective retrieval and software development. It is concluded that the program generator approach can provide the flexibility necessary for various applications and future growth of computerized medical record system. The final system has been proven effective in practical operation. The future extension concerns the introduction of multi-microprocessor structure and logic representation is presented.  相似文献

基于实地调查,依据基径和高度分级数据,通过年龄锥和年龄结构拟合函数分析库姆塔格沙漠3个典型种群的年龄结构特征和种群生长状态及发展趋势。结果表明:梭梭种群年龄结构呈反"J"型曲线,目前属于稳定增长型种群,但因其幼苗数量相对较少使其增长受限;沙生柽柳种群年龄结构呈"铃"型曲线,虽然表现出类似稳定型种群特征,但由于幼龄植株数量很小,中龄级的植株数量比例较大,种群存在衰退威胁;胡杨种群年龄结构具有一定的特殊性,呈反转"S"型曲线,中、大龄级植株数量保证了种群能够维持一定的稳定状态,而幼龄级数量较大,使种群具有一定的增长潜力。3个典型种群各自年龄结构特征使其面临着不同程度的生存威胁,必须采取不同的保护措施以维持种群结构的稳定和发展。  相似文献

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Limited data are available about spontaneous growth, pubertal growth spurt and the long-term outcome of patients suffering from familial male precocious puberty (FMPP). We report on a boy with FMPP whose growth pattern and pubertal development was studied longitudinally without treatment. METHODS: Long-term prospective follow-up without treatment of a 6.2-year-old boy with FMPP having inherited a mutation of the LH receptor gene (A568V) from his father. RESULTS: The pubertal growth spurt was of unusual maximal amplitude (growth rate 12.4 cm/year at the age of 5-6 years) and of extraordinary duration lasting for 5.2 years from age 3.8 to 9.0 years. No deterioration of height potential was observed. Height (174 cm) was within target height range (171.5-188.5 cm) at age 13 years. No central precocious puberty occurred. CONCLUSION: FMPP is an experiment of nature demonstrating that the amplitude and duration of the pubertal growth spurt are much more variable than previously described. Furthermore, this case emphasizes that the indication for treatment is highly dependent on intrafamilial and individual factors.  相似文献
