Summary Previous studies have shown that an algivorous grazing minnow (Campostoma anomalum) is the major herbivore in Brier Creek, a hardwater stream in south central Oklahoma. In summer and autumn schools of Campostoma virtually eliminate algae from substrate surfaces in deeper areas of some pools. The pool-to-pool distributions of algae and Campostoma reported for this stream could occur if nutrient limitation permits grazing by Campostoma to outrun algal growth. To test this hypothesis, mesh pens were built to exclude Campostoma from substrates in each of four typical Campostoma pools. N+P+K lawn fertilizer was added daily to two of the four pools; the other two, which received no fertilizer additions and which were not visibly affected by fertilizer transported downstream from the pools enriched with nutrients, served as controls. Algae accumulated rapidly on natural substrates and on unglazed ceramic tiles in grazer-exclusion pens in pools receiving N+P+K additions and more slowly in pens in both control pools. Periphyton biomass on grazed substrates in all four pools remained low throughout the experiment. Hence, Campostoma at normal densities were able to outrun algal growth even when nutrients were added. Eleven days after the experiment started, I determined biomass, biomass-specific net primary productivity, and areal net primary productivity of periphyton on substrates exposed to all combinations of grazer (+,0) and nutrient (+,0) treatments. Grazing increased biomass-specific primary productivity, prevented accumulation of biomass, and decreased areal primary productivity of periphyton. Additions of N+P+K increased biomass-specific net primary productivity of grazed and ungrazed periphyton and markedly increased biomass of periphyton on substrates protected from Campostoma. Although food supply for Campostoma appeared to be greater with nutrient additions, condition of Campostoma in pools receiving N+P+K was not significantly different from Campostoma collected from control pools 35 days after the experiment started. I conclude that although nutrient supply limits biomass-specific primary productivity of periphyton in Brier Creek, nutrient limitation in this stream exacerbates, rather than causes, the visually conspicuous pool-to-pool complimentary distribution of algae and Campostoma: in this stream, grazing by Campostoma at natural densities can outrun periphyton growth even when nutrients are added.  相似文献

Monitoring river periphyton with artificial benthic substrates   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
The objective of this research was to identify the materials and methods necessary to study the attached algal community on a river bottom in deep water. The study site was the Susquehanna River near Falls, Pennsylvania. Artificial substrates of smooth glass, frosted glass, Vermont slate, sandy slate (flagstone) and acrylic plate were placed on the stream bottom in detritus free sample holders by scuba divers. Both monthly and long-term cumulative samples were collected from the plates employing scuba and a Bar-Clamp sampler. River stones (natural substrates) were collected for comparison. Samples were analyzed in a Palmer Cell under a Bausch and Lomb research microscope. Diatoms were the most important colonizers of river stones, with the genera Nitzschia and Navicula most abundant. Highest periphyton densities occurred on natural substrates in winter with a maximum of 2.2 × 104 units/ mm2. Artificial substrates with one month exposure periods accumulated maximum periphyton density from May through October with relatively low densities in winter. Cumulative artificial substrates were most like river stones in patterns of colonization. Frosted acrylic is recommended for future studies employing benthic artificial periphyton substrates. This study was partially supported by the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company  相似文献

In two laboratory tests at 15 °C early-instar nymphs of the mayfly, Ephemerella subvaria were kept on different diets and their survival and growth recorded. The diets were either conditioned maple leaf discs; maple leaf disc remnants + Gammarus faecal material; maple leaf disc remnants + Hesperophylax faecal material; a clump of Cladophora strands or periphytic growth on small stones. A control group received no food. In both the tests, nymphs kept on Cladophora showed significantly (P 0.05 or P 0.01) higher percentage survival than for those on any other diet and the growth of these nymphs was second only to nymphs given periphyton as a diet. Although the nymphs on a diet of periphyton showed significantly (P 0.01) higher growth as compared to those on other food sources, the survival percentage of these nymphs was the poorest, presumably because of food limitation. As expected, a diet of maple leaf discs resulted in significantly higher survival and growth of nymphs as compared to the nymphs not given any food. The results clearly demonstrated that autochthonous sources of organic matter can serve as excellent food for stream invertebrates.  相似文献

How do grazers affect periphyton heterogeneity in streams?   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Alvarez M  Peckarsky BL 《Oecologia》2005,142(4):576-587
The effects of grazing by stream invertebrates on algal biomass and spatial heterogeneity were tested experimentally in flow-through microcosms with natural substrates (rocks). One experiment tested the effects of fixed densities of three species of grazers (the caddisfly Allomyia sp. and two mayflies, Epeorus deceptivus and Baetis bicaudatus) on periphyton. Baetis was tested with and without chemical cues from fish predators, which reduced grazer foraging activity to levels similar to the less mobile mayfly (Epeorus). Mean algal biomass (chlorophyll a; chl a) was reduced in grazer treatments compared to ungrazed controls, but there were no differences among grazer treatments. Algal heterogeneity (Morisita index) increased with grazer mobility, with the highest heterogeneity occurring in the Baetis-no fish treatment (most mobile grazer) and the lowest in the caddisfly treatment (most sedentary grazer). A second experiment used a three factorial design, and tested whether initial resource distribution (homogeneous vs. heterogeneous), Baetis density (high vs. low) and fish odor (present vs. absent) affected grazer impact on algal resources. Abundances of Baetis and chl a on individual rocks were recorded to explore the mechanisms responsible for the observed distributions of algae. Initial resource heterogeneity was maintained despite being subjected to grazing. Mean chl a was highest in controls, as in experiment I, and effects of Baetis on algal biomass increased with grazer density. There were no fish effects on algal biomass and no effects of grazer density or fish on algal heterogeneity. At the scale of individual rocks Baetis was unselective when food was homogeneously distributed, but chose high-food rocks when it was heterogeneously distributed. Results of these mechanistic experiments showed that Baetis can track resources at the scale of single rocks; and at moderate densities mobile grazers could potentially maintain periphyton distributions observed in natural streams.  相似文献

The effect of different light qualities (blue, green, white, red and far-red) on ethylene production in leaf discs and flower petal discs of Begonia × hiemalis cv. Schwabenland Red was studied. All the light qualities, except far-red, reduced the ACC-conversion to ethylene in leaf discs by about 70% at a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 20 mol m–2s–1.Blue and green light were less inhibitory than white and red light at lower PPFD. In all treatments far-red light at 0.5 mol m–2s–1 of photon flux density (PFD) stimulated the ACC-conversion to ethylene in leaf discs by about 60–90% compared to the dark-incubated control. White and red light strongly inhibited the -naphthalene-acetic acid (NAA) stimulated ethylene synthesis in leaf discs. The results may suggest that the ethylene production is controlled by phytochrome in the leaves but not in the petals. Lack of coaction of any light quality with silver ions on ethylene production in leaf and petal discs was also observed.Abbreviations ACC 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid - EFE ethylene forming enzyme - NAA -naphthalene-acetic acid - PFD photon flux density - PPFD photosynthetic photon flux density - RH relative air humidity - SAM S-adenosylmethionine - STS silver thiosulphate  相似文献

1. The longitudinal effects of herbivory on stream periphyton assemblages were examined in laboratory stream channels, each of which consisted of an upstream chamber, which either contained snail grazers or not, and downstream chambers, none of which contained grazers. Periphyton assemblages of two ages (0–21 days old and 21–42 days old) were sampled in both upstream and downstream chambers to detect proximate (i.e. localized) and longitudinal (i.e. downstream) effects of herbivory. 2. Both proximate and longitudinal effects were detected, although they differed in their impact on the periphyton assemblage. Periphyton biomass and cell accumulation were lower in grazed than in ungrazed upstream chambers throughout the experimental period. Accumulation rates on initially bare tiles were substantially higher downstream of grazed than of ungrazed chambers, but grazing had no effect on cell densities in established (21–42 day old) assemblages downstream. 3. Longitudinal effects of herbivory were not due to quantitative differences in the flux of propagules or nutrients from grazed and ungrazed chambers. Although not tested in this study, it is hypothesized that differences in the physiological condition of exported propagules may have contributed to differences in downstream colonization rates in grazed and ungrazed streams. 4. The magnitude of longitudinal impacts of herbivory and the importance of different causal mechanisms are predicted to vary depending on the standing crop and productive capacity of the periphyton assemblages as well as the consumptive demand of the herbivore guild.  相似文献

Algal responses to nutrients, grazing by Helicopsyche borealis, and concurrent grazing by Helicopsyche and Baetis tricaudatus were examined in recirculating stream chambers. Alagl communities, dominated by Achnanthes minutissima, Cocconeis placentula, and Synedra ulna, were primarily phosphorus-limited. Algal populations responded after only 6 days of nutrient enrichment. Initially, both the adnate diatom Cocconeis and erect diatom Synedra showed positive response to nutrient enrichment. Accumulation of algal biomass between day 3 and 6 in the P enriched treatment was resulted primarily from the growth of Synedra, an overstory rosette-like diatom colony. Such a shift in dominant growth from adnate to erect diatoms is a general phenomenon in periphyton succession in the absence of disturbance. Algal species showed differential responses to an increase of Helicopsyche densities. The accrual rate of Achnanthes continuously decreased with increasing grazer densities. The accrual rates of both Cocconeis and Synedra declined but reached plateaus between medium and high grazing densities. Baetis effectively and exclusively depressed Synedra and had no significant impact on Cocconeis. After concurrent grazing, algal communities were mainly dominated by Cocconeis (approximately 80% of total algal biovolume). The grazer' s mouth structures, grazing efficiencies, and mobility may account for the differential effects of concurrent grazing on algal communities. Significant interactive effects of P and grazing by Helicopsyche indicated that both nutrient addition and grazing may exert significant impact on algal communities. However, grazing may have a much stronger effect on algae than nutrients. Our results indicate that enhancement of algal biomass by P was dampened by grazing activities and that P had no effect on algal biomass in the presence of grazers.  相似文献

The effect of zeatin, NAA (-naphthaleneacetic acid), putrescine and cefotaxime on the frequency of shoot regeneration from Betula pendula Dalecarlica EM 85 leaf discs has been examined. About 80% of leaf discs were induced to form adventitious shoots when the culture medium contained 45.6 moll-1 zeatin and 0.1 mmoll-1 cefotaxime. The addition of NAA to zeatin-containing media prevented shoot regeneration but stimulated root development directly from leaf tissues. Putrescine (0.1 mmoll-1) and cefotaxime (0.1 mmoll-1) could both significantly increase the percentage of leaf discs regenerating on optimal zeatin-containing media, and increase the number of shoots per regenerating disc.Abbreviations NAA -naphthaleneacetic acid - BAP 6-benzyladenine  相似文献

1. Epilithic algae grown on elevated or non-elevated ceramic tiles were exposed (to produce assemblages with different grazing histories) in a heavily grazed, montane stream in New Mexico, U.S.A. to Ameletus nymphs (Ephemeroptera) and Ecclisomyia larvae (Trichoptera) and the algal composition in insect faeces was compared to that on the tiles. Differences in grazing and digestion efficiency between grazers were then assessed and also differences in susceptibility to ingestion and digestibility among common algae. 2. Ordination of tile and faecal samples, using the relative abundance of common algae, revealed that: (i) algal assemblages on elevated vs. non-elevated tiles differed only slightly; (ii) the taxonomic composition of algae in faeces of both caddis and mayflies differed substantially from that on the tiles, indicating low grazing efficiency for some algal taxa; and (iii) the algal composition of faeces produced by caddis larvae and mayflies was similar, indicating little difference in grazing efficiency between them. However, some algal taxa were more susceptible to ingestion by caddisfly larvae when occurring on elevated tiles than on non-elevated tiles, suggesting that previous exposure to caddis grazing influenced assemblage attributes. 3. Although Ameletus and Ecclisomyia differed little in grazing efficiency, the percentage of diatoms that were dead after passage through the gut was greatest in the mayfly treatment, suggesting that mayflies digested diatoms more efficiently than the caddis. Analyses of differences in the condition of chloroplasts within diatoms in tile and faecal samples showed that losses of ’live‘ diatom cells (i.e. those containing full chloroplasts) during gut passage through mayflies equalled the increase, in faeces, of ’dead‘ (empty frustules) cells of all common diatoms. In contrast, some diatoms were digested inefficiently by caddis larvae. 4. Algae on elevated tiles contained a higher proportion of dead diatoms than those on non-elevated tiles, possibly because mayflies visited raised tiles more often and, consequently, ingested and defaecated cells at a higher rate in the absence of caddis larvae. Moreover, diatom taxa differed in the percentage of cells that were dead within tile assemblages, with populations of typically grazer-resistant taxa (e.g. Achnanthidium minutissimum, Planothidium lanceolatum and Cocconeis placentula var. euglypta) containing significantly more dead cells than grazer-susceptible taxa [e.g. small, chain-forming Fragilaria (= Staurosirella)]. This result suggests that a trade-off exists between ingestion vs. digestion resistance of microalgae. Both the ingestion and digestion efficiency of algivorous macroinvertebrates could influence the structure and function of algal assemblages. In heavily grazed systems, where algal cells are probably processed through grazer guts repeatedly, differential resistance to digestion among algae may be particularly important.  相似文献

Surface sediment diatom assemblages were examined from 26 freshwater sites near Isachsen (78°47N, 103°32W), Ellef Ringnes Island, a region of diverse and atypical water chemistry for high arctic sites. One hundred and sixty eight diatom taxa were identified from these samples, over 50% of which had not previously been recorded in the Canadian High Arctic. Variations in diatom assemblages were related to changes in measured environmental variables using multivariate techniques. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that five variables contributed significantly to explaining patterns of diatom variation (i.e., COND, DIC, Mn, TPF, TPU). The first CCA axis (=0.44) was primarily controlled by conductivity-related variables, while CCA axis 2 (=0.21) was related to particulate concentrations. Diatom-based inference models were generated for the reconstruction of conductivity (RMSEPjack=0.32, r2jack=0.76) and pH (RMSEPjack=0.40, r2jack=0.69). The strengths of these models indicate that it will be possible to reliably infer past trends in conductivity and pH from diatom assemblages preserved in dated sediment cores from the Isachsen region.  相似文献

In this paper we analysed autotrophic sources of the carbon ( 13C) and the trophic position ( 15N) of Leporinus friderici in the influence area of Corumbá Reservoir, Brazil. We collected samples of muscles of fish from different sizes riparian vegetation, C4 grasses, zooplankton, periphyton and particulate organic carbon (POC). There were significant differences for the carbon isotope proportion found in muscles of L.friderici in the different size groups analysed. The highest values of 13C recorded for middle sized individuals is attributed to the large contribution of C4 plants in their diet. Small individuals sampled upstream also receive similar contribution from C4 plants. In contrast the same size group sampled downstream from the reservoir, has a much smaller of C4 plants. The 13C negative character of small individuals from downstream is due to the larger contribution of C3 plants (except periphyton). At larger sizes we found intermediate 13C values. The 15N proportions we found for each size group were not significantly different, however we found decreasing mean values with increasing size. The trophic level calculated from the dietary data was higher than that found with the 13C concentration in the muscle, except for small individuals, when the values were equal.  相似文献

The Glossosomatid caddisflies, which are stream-insect grazers, have been found to negatively affect the densities of mayfly grazers through intensive periphyton exploitation. The grazing efficiency of a Glossomatid caddisfly, however, is known to decrease with increasing current velocity. A manipulative field experiment was conducted to test the hypotheses that the presence of Glossosoma sp. decreased the densities of three mayfly grazers, Baetis thermicus, Cinygmula sp. and Paraleptophlebia chocorata, and that the decrease was stronger in slower stream-flow conditions. The experiment followed a two-factorial design with flow conditions and Glossosoma densities as the main factors. The periphyton biomass in conditions of reduced Glossosoma density was greater than in natural Glossosoma densities, but was not affected by flow conditions. In partial contradiction of the experimental hypothesis, the experimental reduction in Glossosoma density resulted in a higher density of Baetis, irrespective of flow conditions. The grazing activity of Glossosoma would not be affected by the flow variations that were employed in the present experiment. The reduction in Glossosoma density resulted in higher densities of Cinygmula and Paraleptophlebia only in fast-flow conditions, a result that did not support the experimental hypotheses. The competitive influence of Glossosoma on these mayflies might be altered by flow conditions causing differences in the resource structure.  相似文献

Micropropagated plantlets are fragile and often lack sufficient vigour to survive the acclimatization shock during transplantation to the soil. Effects of photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFDs) on growth, photosynthesis and anatomy of micropropagated Doritaenopsis were studied after 4 months of acclimatization in a greenhouse at 25 °C. The plantlets were transferred to three different PPFDs for four months, i.e. low light (175), intermediate light (270) and high light (450 mol m–2 s–1). For most of the growth parameters measured i.e. leaf length, leaf area, leaf width, fresh weight, dry weight, chlorophyll (Chl) a/b ratio, were greater for the intermediate light levels after 4 months of acclimatization. The only exception was leaf thickness, which was increased more under high light levels. Results showed that the survival of Doritaenopsis plantlets was greatest (90%) in low light and intermediate light (89%) compared with only (73%) at high light. However, at low light levels, pigment concentrations (chlorophyll a, b and total chlorophyll) were higher. Net CO2 assimilation (A), stomatal conductance (g) and transpiration (E) were higher in plantlets grown at high level PPFD than at low after 4 months of acclimatization. Photosynthetic efficiency (Fv/Fm) decreased insignificantly; only at mid day for the high light treatment whereas leaf temperature and stomatal closure increased compared to low light. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images of leaves from acclimatized plantlets showed an increase in wax formation for the high light grown plantlets compared to those at low light. Microscopic analysis of acclimatized root sections showed highly developed multiseriate-velamen layers and higher root cell activity; while shoots had larger leaf air spaces than those of in vitro grown plantlets. These results suggest that physiological acclimation occurs at the intermediate PPFD (270 mol m–2 s–1) in Doritaenopsis compared to treatment at the high light level.  相似文献

Turgor (p) and osmotic potential (s) in epidermal and mesophyll cells, in-situ xylem water potential (-xyl) and gas exchange were measured during changes of air humidity and light in leaves ofTradescantia virginiana L., Turgor of single cells was determined using the pressure probe. Sap of individual cells was collected with the probe for measuring the freezing-point depression in a nanoliter osmometer. Turgor pressure was by 0.2 to 0.4 MPa larger in mesophyll cells than in epidermal cells. A water-potential gradient, which was dependent on the rate of transpiration, was found between epidermis and mesophyll and between tip and base of the test leaf. Step changes of humidity or light resulted in changes of epidermal and mesophyll turgor (p-epi, p-mes) and could be correlated with the transpiration rate. Osmotic potential was not affected by a step change of humidity or light. For the humidity-step experiments, stomatal conductance (g) increased with increasing epidermal turgor.g/p-epi appeared to be constant over a wide range of epidermal turgor pressures. In light-step experiments this type of response was not found and stomatal conductance could increase while epidermal turgor decreased.Symbols E transpiration - g leaf conductance - w leaf/air vapour concentration difference - -epi water potential of epidermal cells - -mes water potential of mesophyll cells - -xyl water potential of xylem - p-epi turgor pressure of epidermal cells - p-mes turgor pressure of mesophyll cells - s-epi osmotic potential of epidermal cells - s-mes osmotic potential of mesophyll cells  相似文献

Elevated aluminum (Al) concentrations are often associated with acid-stressed aquatic ecosystems, so it has been unclear whether acidic water or elevated Al is more responsible in changing community composition. Experiments were done to investigate effects of acidification and increased Al on the abundance of benthic algae in artificial streams supplied with natural water and nominal treatments of (a) pH 4.8, (b) 500 µg l-1 Al, or (c) the mixture of pH 4.8 and 500 µg l-1 Al compared to a control without added Al or acid. These treatments are referred to as Acid, Al-only, Acid + Al, and the control, respectively. In the Acid treatment the abundance of two diatoms, two green algae, dry weight biomass, and chlorophyll a decreased; one diatom and one filamentous blue-green alga increased. In the Al-only treatment, densities of two diatoms, one green alga, one blue-green alga, dry weight biomass, and chlorophyll a increased. In the Acid + Al treatment, abundances of one green alga, two blue-green algae, and concentrations of chlorophyll a decreased below the levels observed in the Acid treatment. Acid and Al concentrations were altered by each other and by chemical and biological processes in the stream system. Species of diatoms, green algae, and blue-green algae responded individually to treatments and mixtures of acid and Al. Shifts in the abundance of species may change food web relationships for higher-level consumers, and algae may be useful biomonitors of ecological stress.  相似文献

Temporal patterns of grazer-periphyton interactions in laboratory streams   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
SUMMARY. 1. The snail Juga silicuta (500 m?2) and the caddisfly Dicosmoecus gilvipes (50 m?2) were introduced into separate laboratory streams on days 1, 9, 16 and 28 of algal development. The mayfly Baetis spp. (500 m?2) was introduced on days 1 and 16, and two streams did not receive grazers. We assessed the interaction between succession in the pcriphyton, herbivore type and time of encounter in a 40-day experiment. 2. In ungrazed streams, the chlorophyte Scenedesmus obliquus was the most abundant early colonizer. The relative abundance of diatoms increased after day 9, and at day 40 the algal assemblage consisted of a thick mat of diatoms and S. obliquus with an overstorey of filaments of the chlorophyte Stigeoclonium tenue. In general, introductions of grazers at any stage altered this pattern by removing biomass, accelerating the replacement of S. obliquus by diatoms, and suppressing the growth of filaments. Grazing also reduced the relative abundance of the larger diatom Nitzschia oregona but increased the relative abundance of the smaller adnate diatoms Nitzschia frustulum var. perpusilla and Navicula minima. 3. Dicosmoecus decreased algal biomass and altered successional trajectories to a greater degree than either Juga or Baetis. Dicosmoecus rapidly grazed the entire substrate, whereas Juga and Baetis only cleared patches in the assemblages. Little alteration in algal development was observed in the Baetis streams after day 16, probably because (he periphyton assemblages attained a size and structure that prevented effective grazing by Baetis. 4. The patchy grazing patterns of Juga and Baetis resulted in more diverse algal assemblages than either the Dicosmoecus grazed or ungrazed streams. In natural streams, the temporal and spatial pattern of grazing relative to the developmental stage of the periphyton may contribute to maintaining a mosaic of algal patches in different serai stages.  相似文献

Leaf explants harvested from shoot proliferating cultures and intact plants of Liquidambar styraciflua Variegata were placed on solidified Woody Plant medium supplemented with 0.1 mgl-1 (0.5 M) naphthaleneacetic acid and 2.5 mgl-1 (11.1 M) benzyladenine to initiate shoot meristems directly. Leaves from intact plants produced over 4 times more adventitious shoots than leaves from in vitro shoots and had a greater tendency to form shoots on the lamina. The relative developmental age of leaf tissue used dramatically influenced the shoot organogenic response observed for leaf explants from intact plants of L. styraciflua Variegata and Moraine.-Leaves that were either 20% or 50% of full size and still actively expanding were superior to other developmental stages for shoot organogenesis. As developmental leaf age increased throughout the period of leaf expansion, the number of shoots forming on the petiole stub remained constant, whereas shoot formation on the lamina increased 8 fold. Shoots derived from Variegata leaves rooted well and grew normally as plants. Differences in rooting ability and plant size could be detected between groups that had been separated according to explant source (in vitro vs. intact plant) and the location of shoot formation (petiole vs. lamina).  相似文献

1. An experiment conducted in streamside channels was used to document the regrowth of grazed periphyton. Our objective was to determine the relative importance of current velocity, grazing duration, and grazer type in shaping the trajectory of algal and periphytic regrowth. 2. The grazing mayflies Baetis bicaudatus and Epeorus longimanus were used alone and in combination to create three grazing treatments at slow, medium and fast current (2–5, 15–20 and 30–40 cm s?1, respectively). Duration treatments consisted of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 days of grazing. Chlorophyll a and ash‐free dry mass (AFDM) accumulation on grazed tiles was measured (as periphytic AFDM and chlorophyll a, respectively) at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 days following the removal of grazers. 3. Chlorophyll a and AFDM was best predicted by interactions between current velocity, grazing duration and regrowth time. 4. The two grazer species did not differ in their effect on Chlorophyll a and AFDM during the period of periphytic regrowth that followed grazing. 5. Longer grazing duration reduced periphytic biomass, but also accelerated algal regrowth, and this growth enhancement was more pronounced at slower current velocities. 6. Data from this study suggest that herbivory can have important historical effects on periphytic accrual.  相似文献
