Swimming and diving abilities of two syntopic species of water shrews, Neomys anomalus and Neomys fodiens, were tested in aquaria using video recordings taken from three views (lateral distant, lateral close and dorsal). The frequency and total duration of diving, as well as the mean duration of diving and floating bouts, were significantly higher in N. fodiens than in N. anomalus. Frequency of paddling during surface swimming was lower in N. fodiens than in N. anomalus. N. fodiens dived mainly for long distances at the bottom of the aquarium and performed a wider range of dive profiles than N. anomalus, which preferred rather short and shallow dives. The two species differed also significantly in their fineness ratios (describing how streamlined their bodies are) when diving. When swimming, N. fodiens had a relatively wider body and performed narrower movements with its tail than N. anomalus. These results show quantitatively and qualitatively for the first time that N. fodiens is more proficient at swimming and diving than N. anomalus. The results also help to explain the inter-specific differences in efficiency of underwater foraging, and support the idea of segregation of ecological niches of these species based on their different foraging modes (diving vs. wading).  相似文献

We previously found that Wickerhamomyces anomalus (formerly Hansenula anomala, Pichia anomala) was the second most frequently isolated yeast in Belgian artisan bakery sourdoughs and that the yeast dominated laboratory sourdough fermentations. Such findings are of interest in terms of the advantage of W. anomalus over other commonly encountered sourdough yeasts and its potential introduction into the sourdough ecosystem. Here, we provide a brief overview of current knowledge on yeast ecology and diversity in sourdough in the context of the potential natural habitat of W. anomalus. Insight into the population structure of W. anomalus was obtained by comparing internal transcribed spacer rDNA sequences of selected sourdough isolates with publicly available database sequences.  相似文献

Plant secondary compounds can prevent feeding by phytophagous insects or, if ingested, can be poisonous to them. Less attention has been paid to the additional effects they have on feeding behavior when they are only weakly deterrent or not deterrent at all. Experiments were carried out on the generalist grass-hopperSchistocerca americana. Individuals were presented either with two cakes of high-quality artificial food with a single deterrent compound added or with two cakes, each with a different added deterrent compound. The deterrents consisted of single plant secondary compounds that were either marginally or strongly deterrent. There were profound differences in feeding behavior between those individuals given identical and those given different cake types, including longer feeding bouts on single cakes when a choice of different cake types was available. The behavioral effects demonstrate that the presence of secondary compounds in one food can influence the patterns of feeding on other available foods and suggest that such chemicals could impact foraging activities in a complex manner.  相似文献

Dietary mixing by nymphs of Schistocerca americana was studied in the laboratory using artificial diet cakes. Individuals were given either two different inadequate but complementary diet cakes or two adequate and identical ones. When unique flavors (coumarin or NHT) were added to the diet cakes, insects given the inadequate diet treatment switched between cakes more than insects exposed to the adequate diets. Geographic studies addressing the role of competition in determining species’ macrodistributions have been limited by only simple or subjective means of identifying regions of suitable habitat. Now, ecological‐niche models of species’ potential distributions present a possible approach to testing for the geographic patterns predicted under competitive exclusion and competitive release. Previously, we modeled the potential distributions of two spiny pocket mice (Heteromys australis and H. anomalus) in northwestern South America using specimen localities, environmental data, and the Genetic Algorithm for Rule‐Set Prediction (GARP). Here we superimpose the models to examine known distributional records in areas of potential sympatry between the two species, thus testing the geographic predictions of competitive exclusion. In addition, we examine environmental characteristics of known localities, testing for data consistent with competitive release. Areas of potential sympatry are minimal, lying in regions of intermediate water balance. Only records of H. australis are known from areas of potential sympatry in regions where the species’ ranges meet, consistent with exclusion of H. anomalus by H. australis. Heteromys anomalus inhabits areas ecologically suitable for both species only in the isolated Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in which H. australis is not present (most likely for historical reasons). Furthermore, environmental characteristics of localities of H. anomalus in biogeographic regions where H. australis is absent fit the pattern predicted under competitive release. In contrast, localities of H. australis show no indication of competitive release. Although the results of present analyses do not conclusively demonstrate competitive exclusion or release, they provide directional hypotheses that can now be tested in experimental field and laboratory studies.  相似文献

Blue mold decay is the one of most important postharvest disease of apples caused by the fungus, Penicillium expansum. This study aimed to investigate the biocontrol efficacy of the yeast, Wickerhamomyces anomalus, on postharvest blue mold decay of apples and the relative defense mechanisms. The results indicated that W. anomalus could significantly reduce the blue mold decay of apples, and the maximum inhibition was obtained when the concentration of W. anomalus was 1?×?108 cells ml?1. Furthermore, W. anomalus significantly reduced the fruit decay under ambient conditions, without generating any change in fruit quality. In vitro experiments showed that W. anomalus greatly inhibited the spore germination and germ tube elongation of P. expansum. Besides, its ease of adaptation, stable growth and potential colonization of in apple wounds or surfaces indicated that W. anomalus could compete with P. expansum for nutrients and space, leading to considerable inhibition blue mold decay. W. anomalus significantly induced the activities of polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in apples. Moreover, W. anomalus increased the contents of flavonoid and total phenols. All these results suggested that W. anomalus has potential biocontrol efficacy to control the postharvest blue mold decay of apples

Malted barley is a major raw material of beer, as well as distilled spirits and several food products. The production of malt (malting) exploits the biochemical reactions of a natural process, grain germination. In addition to germinating grain, the malting process includes another metabolically active component: a diverse microbial community that includes various types of bacteria and fungi. Therefore, malting can be considered as a complex ecosystem involving two metabolically active groups. Yeasts and yeast-like fungi are an important part of this ecosystem, but previously the significance of yeasts in malting has been largely underestimated. Characterization and identification of yeasts in industrial processes revealed 25 ascomycetous yeasts belonging to 10 genera, and 18 basidiomycetous yeasts belonging to 7 genera. In addition, two ascomycetous yeast-like fungi belonging to the genera Aureobasidium and Exophiala were commonly detected. Yeasts and yeast-like fungi produced extracellular hydrolytic enzymes with a potentially positive contribution to the malt enzyme spectrum. Several ascomycetous yeast strains showed strong antagonistic activity against field and storage moulds, Wickerhamomyces anomalus (synonym Pichia anomala) being the most effective species. Malting studies revealed that W. anomalus VTT C-04565 effectively restricted Fusarium growth and hydrophobin production during malting and prevented beer gushing. In order to broaden the antimicrobial spectrum and to improve malt brewhouse performance, W. anomalus could be combined with other starter cultures such as Lactobacillus plantarum. Well-characterized microbial mixtures consisting of barley and malt-derived microbes open up several possibilities to improve malt properties and to ensure the safety of the malting process.  相似文献

We studied the intra- and interspecific size variability of 271 water shrewsNeomys fodiens (Pennant, 1771) andN. anomalus Cabrera, 1907 from seven sample sites along a latitudinal transect from Bosnia and Herzegovina to Poland.Neomys anomalus was the only water shrew in three Dinaride karst fields, while it was sympatric with N.fodiens in remaining sites. The first principal component scores (PC1; 72.2% of variance explained), derived from principal components analysis of 13 cranial, mandibular and dental measurements, were used as the size factor. One-way ANOVA detected significant interpopulation variation in both species; intraspecific variation, however, was much more pronounced inN. anomalus. No latitudinal size pattern was found in N. fodiens (r = −0.42, p = 0.58), while mean PC1 scores correlated significantly and negatively with latitude inN. anomalus (r = −0.92, p = 0.004). Therefore, along a north to south transect,N. anomalus converged in size towards N. fodiens, which suggests that the former species occupies increasingly more aquatic habitats in the same direction. Individuals from allopatric populations ofN. anomalus from Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina were, on average, larger than sympatric conspecific populations from the same latitudinal zone, which is consistent with the hypothesis of character displacement.  相似文献

The yeast Wickerhamomyces anomalus has been studied for its wide biotechnological potential, mainly for applications in the food industry. Different strains of W. anomalus have been isolated from diverse habitats and recently from insects, including mosquitoes of medical importance. This paper reports the isolation and phylogenetic characterization of W. anomalus from laboratory‐reared adults and larvae of Phlebotomus perniciosus (Diptera: Psychodidae), a main phlebotomine vector of human and canine leishmaniasis. Of 65 yeast strains isolated from P. perniciosus, 15 strains were identified as W. anomalus; one of these was tested for the killer phenotype and demonstrated inhibitory activity against four yeast sensitive strains, as reported for mosquito‐isolated strains. The association between P. perniciosus and W. anomalus deserves further investigation in order to explore the possibility that this yeast may exert inhibitory/killing activity against Leishmania spp.  相似文献

Bacterial wilt caused by the Ralstonia solanacearum species complex (RSSC) is a disease that negatively affects the cultivation of Solanaceae crops in Burkina Faso. Knowledge of the pathogen diversity is essential to deploy locally adapted control methods. In this study, diseased plants showing typical bacterial wilt symptoms were collected in the three main agroclimatic zones of Burkina Faso for the detection of RSSC isolates. Strain characterization was achieved through a phylogenetic and pathogenicity diversity assessment. A total of 102 isolates were sampled, and Phylotype I (Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum) was predominant (n = 101; sequevars 14, 31, 34, and 46). The remaining isolate was characterized as Phylotype IIA-35 (Ralstonia solanacearum). Phylotypes I-31 and I-46 were predominant and both characterized as the most the aggressive group of strains amongst a subset of 33 representative isolates. Our findings provide valuable information as regard RSSC diversity that breeders and resistance programme should target in order to fight this pathogen in Burkina Faso and around the world.  相似文献

A better understanding of the genetic factors controlling grain yellow pigment content (GYPC) is important for both pasta (high GYPC) and bread wheat (low GYPC) quality improvement. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) for GYPC have been mapped repeatedly on the distal regions of chromosome arms 7AL and 7BL in wheat, and the Phytoene synthase 1 (PSY-1) gene located in this region has been proposed as a candidate gene. We show here that PSY-E1, the tall wheatgrass orthologue, is completely linked to differences in GYPC, and that selection for white endosperm mutants in recombinant lines carrying this gene resulted in the identification of a mutation in a conserved amino acid of PSY-E1. These results, together with the association between GYPC and allelic differences in PSY-1 in hexaploid wheat, suggest that this gene plays an important role in the determination of GYPC. However, a second white endosperm mutant previously mapped to chromosome arm 7EL showed no mutations in PSY-E1 suggesting the existence of additional gene(s) affecting GYPC in this chromosome region. This hypothesis was further supported by the mapping of QTL for GYPC on 7AL proximal to PSY-1 in a cross between pasta wheat varieties UC1113 and Kofa. Interestingly, the Kofa PSY-B1 allele showed unusually high levels of polymorphisms as a result of a conversion event involving the PSY-A1 allele. In summary, our results support the hypothesis that allelic differences in PSY-1 and at least one additional gene in the distal region of the long arm of homoeologous group 7L are associated with differences in GYPC. Hybrid speciation is thought to be facilitated by escape of early generation hybrids into new habitats, subsequent environmental selection and adaptation. Here, we ask whether two homoploid hybrid plant species (Helianthus anomalus, H. deserticola) diverged sufficiently from their ancestral parent species (H. annuus, H. petiolaris) during hybrid speciation so that they are more fit than the parent species in hybrid species habitats. Hybrid and parental species were reciprocally transplanted into hybrid and parental habitats. Helianthus anomalus was more fit than parental species in the H. anomalus actively moving desert dune habitat. The abilities to tolerate burial and excavation and to obtain nutrients appear to be important for success in the H. anomalus habitat. In contrast, H. deserticola failed to outperform the parental species in the H. deserticola stabilized desert dune habitat, and several possible explanations are discussed. The home site advantage of H. anomalus is consistent with environmental selection having been a mechanism for adaptive divergence and hybrid speciation and supports the use of H. anomalus as a valuable system for further assessment of environmental selection and adaptive traits.  相似文献

The lateral line system and its innervation were examined in the ostraciid Ostracion immaculatus (Tetraodontiformes), and compared with those in the triacanthodid Triacanthodes anomalus (Tetraodontiformes) and the acropomatid Malakichthys wakiyae (Perciformes). The carapace of O. immaculatus was composed of 6 cephalic and 2 trunk lateral lines, all neuromasts being categorized as “superficial.” Triacanthodes anomalus was identical with O. immaculatus in the absence of the mandibular line and its innervating ramus, whereas in M. wakiyae the line and ramus were present. All neuromasts were “superficial” in the former two, but “canal” in the latter. Judging from the essentially identical lateral line topography and innervation patterns in all three species, the superficial neuromasts in the two tetraodontiforms were considered to have resulted from replacement of canal neuromasts. The number of neuromasts in the cephalic lateral lines of O. immaculatus (106) and T. anomalus (91) were similar, being significantly higher than in M. wakiyae (30). However, the reverse was true for the trunk lateral lines, the two tetraodontiforms having fewer neuromasts (39 in O. immaculatus, 47 in T. anomalus) compared with M. wakiyae (59).  相似文献

To test the previously suggested synonymization of S. anomalus with the older S. magnus, a fragment of the mitochondrial COI gene was amplified via the polymerase chain reaction and sequenced. The sequence variation was examined in a total of 327 base pairs for four steganacarid mite populations, two of which belong to S. anomalus, one to S. magnus and one to S. hirsutus. The sequence variation suggests that S. magnus and S. anomalus are not distinct species and that the population from Fioreta (Siena) is more similar to that from Apulia than to the nearer population from the Apuan Alps. The results show the usefulness of this molecular approach as a tool for determining taxonomic status and for suggesting faunistic movements in the past millions of years.  相似文献

Investigations were carried out to evaluate the efficacy of biocontrol agents (Paecilomyces lilacinus and Cladosporium oxysporum) and/or oil cakes of castor, linseed, groundnut, mahua and neem in the management of root knot nematode, Meloidogyne javanica infecting eggplant under glasshouse conditions. All the treatments effectively suppressed the nematode population and kept the infection at significantly low level. Individual treatment of P. lilacinus was more effective than C. oxysporum in controlling M. javanica, whereas among oil cakes individual treatment of neem was more effective in the management of M. javanica followed by linseed cake, castor cake, groundnut cake and mahua cake. However, the efficacy of biocontrol agents increased in the presence of oil cakes. The highest improvement in plant growth and best protection against M. javanica was obtained by the integration of P. lilacinus with groundnut cake followed by neem cake, linseed cake, castor cake and mahua cake. On the other hand the integration of C. oxysporum with neem cake followed by groundnut cake, linseed cake, castor cake and mahua cake gave the best results in managing M. javanica on eggplant.  相似文献

A study of male meiosis has been carried out on air-dried testicular preparations from three insectivore species: Crocidura russula, Neomys anomalus and Talpa occidentalis.Two particularities in relation to the meiotic process were found. The sex-chromosomes show a special allocycly. In the zygotene and pachytene stages, only some cells (a maximum of 50% in some individuals) present a typical sex-vesicle. In the majority of cells in these stages, the X-chromosome appears unfolded, isopycnotic or negatively heteropycnotic, with the ends of the arms together. The Y-chromosome is more condensed and it is associated with the ends of the X-chromosome. At diakinesis and metaphase I the sex chromosomes show end-to-end pairing. A second interesting feature in these species is the existence of spontaneous polymeiosis in a relative high frequency.The origin of this phenomenon, and the influence of these two particularities on fertility and the relation with the phylogeny of these species are discussed.  相似文献

An early flowering mutant plant of Eucalyptus grandis with normal vegetative growth was found in a nursery in northern Brazil. This mutant plant flowers at approximately 90 days from germination. A cross between a wild-type (normal flowering) tree and the mutant was carried out, generating a progeny of 88 individuals where early flowering segregated in an approximate 1:1 ratio. A genome scan with 100 microsatellite markers distributed across the genome was carried out using bulk segregant analysis (BSA) on two contrasting bulks of 15 plants each. Linkages (LOD>3.0) with a major effect early flowering quantitative trait locus (QTL) were detected and confirmed by a full scale cosegregation analysis for markers EMBRA27, EMBRA60, EMBRA164, EMBRA158, EMBRA91, and EMBRA65. A localized linkage map involving the six loci and the early flowering QTL named Eucalyptus early flowering 1 (Eef1) was constructed belonging to linkage group #2 in the existing microsatellite reference map. The Eef1 locus was mapped between markers EMBRA27 and EMBRA164, with distances of 21.8 and 6.4 cM, respectively. In introgression experiments, these two markers could be successfully used with an expected precision of 98% to select plants carrying the Eef1 mutant allele, assuming no recombination interference in the genomic segment. Early flowering could be a very useful trait both in breeding as well as experimental genetics of Eucalyptus.  相似文献

Seeking new yeast strains having the ability to protect apple fruits against blue mould for a long time under different storage conditions was the main goal of this work. Based on the in vitro test, yeast strains KKUY0017 and KKUY0051 were selected as the most effective antagonists against Penicillium expansum. Sequencing of 26S rDNA of both yeasts confirmed that the identity of KKUY0017 and KKUY0051 was Cryptococcus albidus and Wickerhamomyces anomalus, respectively. The two strains protected the apple fruits from the blue mould disease under a wide range of temperature (5–30°C); however, W. anomalus KKUY0051 was more effective. At 25°C, W. anomalus KKUY0051 involved in the reduction of disease severity and disease incidence of blue mould by 56.49% and 57.78%, respectively. When either of the two yeasts was applied in concentration of 108 or 109 cells/mL, the maximum reduction in disease severity and disease incidence was achieved. Under cold storage (5°C), both yeast strains succeeded to protect the apple fruits free from the infection up to 24 days. Electron micrograph showed a fit attachment between the cells of C. albidus KKUY0017 and the fungal hyphae leading to the degrading of the hyphae; however, W. anomalus killed the fungal hyphae without direct attachment to them. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis of the cell-free extract of W. anomalus KKUY0051 revealed the presence of toxic compounds such as the nitrophenol derivatives. The results support the assumption that the main mode of action of this yeast is by killer toxins. We conclude that application of these yeasts under cold storage condition could keep the apple fruits free from blue mould infection for a long time.  相似文献
