有关鱼类耳石的研究已有100多年的历史,目前已形成一个相对独立的研究领域,在多个研究层面上深入开展,但年龄与生长至今仍然是鱼类耳石研究的主要方面。本文分别从耳石的年轮、日轮和重量方面,介绍了当前耳石在鱼类年龄与生长研究中的应用与发展。我们认为,对耳石日轮的研究仍将会是耳石研究的重要方向;相关研究将会逐渐由个体尺度向种群尺度发展,并可为渔业资源的可持续利用提供科学依据。  相似文献

Length–weight relationships (LWR) of fish serve as building blocks in ichthyology and fishery science. In this study LWR knowledge is extended to some species, regions and sizes of fish either incomplete or missing from the literature or from the online databank (FishBase). For several species data are presented for the first time, while other entries are improved and expanded. Organisms were captured by trawl from the continental shelf of the Israeli coast, where fishes were hypothesized as being small due to low productivity and high water temperatures – a phenomenon called ‘Levantine Nanism’. Despite this, for nine of the 43 species presented here the maximum length values exceeded their Lmax in FishBase. The dominance of fishes of Indo‐Pacific origin among the species with exceptionally large specimens (7 of 9) is in agreement with Bergmann's rule; it is thus hypothesized here that these large specimens result from the low temperatures in the Mediterranean compared to their warm Indo‐Pacific sources. This is an example of the superb adaptation of tropical species to the Mediterranean and suggests that Levantine Nanism may be limited to indigenous species.  相似文献

Synopsis Eugenie Clark is an ichthyologist with a talent for communicating about marine life. Her life had three principal periods, (1) studies under Charles Breder, Carl Hubbs, Lester Aronson and Myron Gordon, (2) directorship of the Cape Haze Marine Laboratory sponsored by the Vanderbilts, and (3) professorship and inspired teaching at the University of Maryland. Genie proved that sharks have surprising learning abilities and that, contrary to popular opinion, none are vicious killers. During her studies on reproductive behavior, territoriality, and ecology of tropical marine sand-dwelling fishes of the Caribbean and Red seas, among many other phenomena, she discovered the cross-fertilizing hermaphroditeSerranus subligarius, the Moses and peacock soles producing toxins that repel sharks and other predators, and sharks sleeping in underwater caves in Mexico and Japan. She combined a love for swimming and diving with the study of marine fishes - from hard-hat diving and snorkeling to using SCUBA and submersibles. Professor emerita since 1992, she has ridden whale sharks and participated in dives using submersibles to 3 600 m depths. She is a recipient of over 25 honors and awards, participated in 24 television specials, and the current IMAX film on sharks. The family Labridae (including scarines and odacines) contains 82 genera and about 600 species of fishes that inhabit coastal and continental shelf waters in tropical and temperate oceans throughout the world. The Labridae (the wrasses) is the fifth largest fish family and second largest marine fish family, and is one of the most morphologically and ecologically diversified families of fishes in size, shape, and color. Labrid phylogeny is a long-standing problem in ichthyology that is part of the larger question of relationships within the suborder Labroidei. A phylogenetic analysis of labrids was conducted to investigate relationships among the six classical tribes of wrasses, the affinities of the wrasses to the parrotfishes (scarines), and the broad phylogenetic structure among labrid genera. Four gene fragments were sequenced from 98 fish species, including 84 labrid fishes and 14 outgroup taxa. Taxa were chosen from all major labrid clades and most major global ocean regions where labrid fishes exist, as well as cichlid, pomacentrid, and embiotocid outgroups. From the mitochondrial genome we sequenced portions of 12S rRNA (1000 bp) and 16S rRNA (585 bp), which were aligned by using a secondary structure model. From the nuclear genome, we sequenced part of the protein-coding genes RAG2 (846 bp) and Tmo4C4 (541 bp). Maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony, and Bayesian analyses on the resulting 2972 bp of DNA sequence produced similar topologies that confirm the monophyly of a family Labridae that includes the parrotfishes and butterfishes and strong support for many previously identified taxonomic subgroups. The tribe Hypsigenyini (hogfishes, tuskfishes) is the sister group to the remaining labrids and includes odacines and the chisel-tooth wrasse Pseudodax moluccanus, a species previously considered close to scarines. Cheilines and scarines are sister-groups, closely related to the temperate Labrini, and pseudocheilines and cheilines are split in all phylogenies. The razorfishes (novaculines) and temperate pseudolabrines form successive sister clades to the large crown group radiation of the Julidini. The cleaner wrasses (Labrichthyini) are nested within this radiation and several julidine genera do not appear to be monophyletic (e.g., Coris and Halichoeres). Invasion of temperate water by this predominantly tropical group has occurred multiple times and the reconstruction of biogeography assuming an Indo-Pacific ancestor results in five different lineages invading the Atlantic/Caribbean region. Functional novelties in the feeding apparatus have allowed labrid fishes to occupy nearly every feeding guild in reef environments, and trophic variation is a central axis of diversification in this family.  相似文献

Africa is blessed with an abundance and rich diversity of freshwater fishes, reflecting its Gondwanan history and geographical position astride the equator. Africa is, however, relatively poorly serviced scientifically, in this respect presenting a challenge to the tension between conserving biodiversity and sustainable development. Biosystematics has experienced several paradigm shifts in the past half century, including the rise of cladistics and more recently the adoption of molecular DNA applications to taxonomy and phylogeny and the assembly and manipulation of large data sets in an era of major development of bioinformatics. The richness of African biodiversity is a magnet to the global systematic community that, to a degree, offsets the disadvantage of an impoverished indigenous scientific capacity. Conservation biology, however, is rooted more closely to the local situation and therefore requires indigenous taxonomic services that are inevitably scarce. Balancing this network of tensions between scientific knowledge generation and application is like walking a tightrope for existing African scientific resources, and to cope it is essential to embrace modern innovative approaches such as barcoding to identify organisms. This paper considers the historical development of African freshwater ichthyology, presents a suite of recent examples illustrating trends in systematic ichthyology in Africa and draws conclusions to suggest that both traditional and new-age approaches to taxonomy are necessary for a complete understanding and appreciation of African freshwater fish diversity and its conservation. The chosen examples also suggest that the tensions between the approaches can be effectively managed provided exponents work collaboratively. The emerging evidence indicates that the combined skills and insight of complex scientific teams including systematists, ecologists, molecular biologists and earth scientists are needed to resolve the deep complexity of evolution in terms of space, time and form.  相似文献

Global climate change is impacting and will continue to impact marine and estuarine fish and fisheries. Data trends show global climate change effects ranging from increased oxygen consumption rates in fishes, to changes in foraging and migrational patterns in polar seas, to fish community changes in bleached tropical coral reefs. Projections of future conditions portend further impacts on the distribution and abundance of fishes associated with relatively small temperature changes. Changing fish distributions and abundances will undoubtedly affect communities of humans who harvest these stocks. Coastal-based harvesters (subsistence, commercial, recreational) may be impacted (negatively or positively) by changes in fish stocks due to climate change. Furthermore, marine protected area boundaries, low-lying island countries dependent on coastal economies, and disease incidence (in aquatic organisms and humans) are also affected by a relatively small increase in temperature and sea level. Our interpretations of evidence include many uncertainties about the future of affected fish species and their harvesters. Therefore, there is a need to research the physiology and ecology of marine and estuarine fishes, particularly in the tropics where comparatively little research has been conducted. As a broader and deeper information base accumulates, researchers will be able to make more accurate predictions and forge relevant solutions.  相似文献

Information on fish trophic levels is important to assess fishing impacts and to better understand the bioaccumulation of pollutants within aquatic food chains. The local ecological knowledge held by small-scale fishers can fill knowledge gaps in fish trophic ecology. We estimated the trophic levels of 69 tropical and subtropical fish species (33 coastal and 36 freshwater species) using data on fish diets from the literature and obtained from interviews with Brazilian fishers. The fish trophic levels estimated from fishers’ knowledge were positively correlated with the trophic levels estimated using data from biological studies for both coastal and freshwater fish. The fishers’ knowledge also indicated bioaccumulation patterns, as the fish trophic levels estimated from fishers’ knowledge were positively related to the mercury (Hg) content in fish muscle (wet weight, from literature data) in 41 fish species (15 coastal and 26 freshwater). These findings reveal the potential for new applications of fishers’ knowledge to ecotoxicology, which could improve management of aquatic ecosystems and strengthen fishers’ political status.  相似文献

Nineteenth-century Basque culture became a kind of ethnographic museum for anthropology, yet the nativism of its discourse ignored the industrial dimension of Basque society. This duality was captured, however, by the amateur photographer Eulalia Abaitua. She has been ignored by the canon due to her “amateur” status, her gender, and perhaps even her own transnational identity. However, her work fits into a long photographic tradition of “vernacular” ethnographers and her contribution is to be found in her “performance” or production. She should, then, be reclaimed as a significant actor in the history of Basque ethnography.  相似文献

Fish play an important role in the culture of Japan, supplying the primary source of food protein. Research on fish ecology in Japan began developing about 1955, and paralleled that in North America and Europe, but has a number of unique differences. Two main research foci, stream fish ecology and ecology of Lake Biwa, were founded by H. Kawanabe and his colleagues while graduate students in D. Miyadi's laboratory at Kyoto University in the 1950s. The focus on studies of individual differences in ecology, life history, and behavior by direct observation that were developed in this laboratory had a pervasive influence on research that has continued to the present. In the 1980s, Kawanabe, who had succeeded Miyadi as laboratory head, also co-organized a major research project on the complex communities of cichlid fishes in Lake Tanganyika, which has involved nearly every major Japanese investigator in fish ecology since. A review of research conducted by Japanese investigators in stream fish ecology, ecology of fishes in lakes Biwa and Tanganyika, and marine reef fish ecology revealed a wealth of literature of which most English-speaking fish ecologists are unaware. The most striking difference between Western and Japanese research is the focus on detailed observations and experiments in natural habitats of individual differences in behavior, life history, and ecology, and how these ultimately affect processes at the population and community level, as amply demonstrated by Kawanabe's early work on ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis. This approach predated by 20–30 years the current interest in individual differences and individual-based models in North America and Europe.  相似文献

The late Dagmar Dykyjová (1914–2011), who is being honoured by this issue of Folia Geobotanica, was an excellent scientist as well as university teacher and research coordinator. Her research work stretched from both fundamental and applied plant physiology to the ecology of wetlands and wetland plants in particular, and to the ecology of Central European orchids. Apart from having authored, co-authored or edited numerous scientific publications, also including several books, she had great merits in popularizing a sensitive approach to environmental management, nature conservation and management of natural resources, based on up-to-date scientific knowledge. She played an important role in the Czechoslovak participation in the International Biological Programme (IBP, 1965–74), especially in the fields of plant production ecology and wetlands ecology. Our understanding of the ecology of tropical mangals has strong practical implications for the management and conservation of these threatened ecosystems. Earlier models of tropical mangals proposed overwhelming influences by physical forces and processes such as the tidal regime or geomorphology on ecosystem structure and function. Recent findings from especially the Indo-Pacific mangals suggest also considerable influence from biotic agents and processes such as sesarmine crab feeding and bioturbation activities in shaping the ecology of tropical mangals. I argue that more research attention should be paid to the study of the interplay between physical and biotic influences in the ecology of tropical mangals. Examples in litter dynamics and community determination are given to illustrate how biotic influences may respond to changes in the physical setting of mangals. This necessitates an approach integrating the two sources of influences. Despite decades of increased research effort, answers to many fundamental questions concerning practical management issues of tropical mangals are still largely unavailable. The often-acclaimed functions and values of tropical mangals also have to be critically assessed in the light of existing and future data. It is proposed that research effort should also be targeted towards the assessment and mitigation of the predicted impacts of urgent problems faced by tropical mangals (e.g. conversion to aquaculture ponds, pollution) in order to secure their long-term conservation and wise management.  相似文献

Species identification is fundamental to address questions about community ecology, biodiversity, conservation and resource management, at any life history stage. Current studies on fish larval ecology of tropical species are hampered by the lack of reliable and effective tools for identifying larvae at the species level. Emperors and large-eye breams comprise fish species from the perciform fish family Lethrinidae. They inhabit coastal and coral-reef habitats of the tropical Indo-Pacific, and they are important fishery resources. Their taxonomy is considered difficult and identification to species is often problematic. Lethrinidae larvae and juveniles can be identified on the basis of meristic counts at the sub-family level, but no further. In this study, we developed a set of polymorphic PCR markers (size polymorphisms at the intron regions from 4/5 nuclear protein-coding genes and single-strand conformation polymorphism of a 205-bp fragment at the mitochondrial 16S rRNA locus), to characterize 341 specimens from 21 Lethrinidae species from New Caledonia (southwestern tropical Pacific). A genetic data-bank was constructed using the genotypes screened from the multiple gene loci of adult or sub-adult specimens used as references for these species. The 16S rRNA gene fragment was able to differentiate species for the genus Lethrinus, but it provided little diagnostic resolution among different species within the genus Gymnocranius. A combination of the 16S rRNA marker and 4 nuclear markers developed herein allowed to sort out species within Gymnocranius spp. from New Caledonia. Using genotype distributions at nuclear loci to test for reproductive isolation, we found that three apparently undescribed large-eye bream species may exist, provisionally referred to as Gymnocranius sp. A, sp. B and sp. C. Subsequent genotyping of 137 Lethrinidae larvae collected from the bays of the Noumea peninsula, New Caledonia, found a total of three species (Lethrinus genivittatus, Lethrinus olivaceus and Gymnocranius sp. 全球渔业衰退是21世纪人类面临的重要挑战之一。为了有效地遏制鱼类资源的衰退,精确的鱼类生态调查是其首要任务。传统的鱼类监测以渔获物采集与形态学鉴定为主,往往耗时耗力且效果不佳,已无法满足现阶段大尺度上的精确调查。环境DNA (eDNA)技术作为一种近年来新兴的鱼类生态调查方法,其与传统方法相比具有灵敏度高、经济高效、采样受限小且对生态系统无干扰的优势,目前其已被广泛地应用于鱼类物种监测、多样性调查、生物量评估以及繁殖活动监测等方面的研究。然而,eDNA技术在鱼类生态学研究的具体应用中暴露出的一些问题将会影响其监测结果的精确性,诸如操作流程的不规范、基因数据库的不完善以及eDNA在环境中生态学过程的不明确等。鉴于上述原因,首先对eDNA技术的发展历程、分析流程以及eDNA技术在鱼类生态学研究领域中的研究进展进行了综述,而后着重分析了eDNA技术的发展当前所面临的困难与挑战,并提出了相应的解决方案,最后对eDNA技术未来在鱼类生态学研究领域中的发展趋势做出了展望。通过本研究,以期能够为eDNA技术在鱼类生态学领域中的准确应用提供理论基础。  相似文献

Despite the importance of small tropical streams for maintaining freshwater biodiversity and providing essential ecosystem services to humans, relatively few studies have investigated multiple-stressor effects of climate and land-use change on these ecosystems, and how these effects may interact. To illustrate these knowledge gaps, we reviewed the current state of knowledge regarding the ecological impacts of climate change and catchment land use on small tropical streams. We consider the effects of predicted changes in streamflow dynamics and water temperatures on water chemistry, habitat structure, aquatic biota, and ecosystem processes. We highlight the pervasive individual effects of climate and land-use change on algal, macroinvertebrate, and fish communities, and in stream metabolism and decomposition processes. We also discuss potential responses of tropical streams in a multiple-stressor scenario, considering higher temperatures and shifts in hydrological dynamics. Finally, we identify six key knowledge gaps in the ecology of low-order tropical streams and indicate future research directions that may improve catchment management in the tropics to help alleviate climate-change impacts and biodiversity losses.  相似文献
