Epiphytic and epipelic diatom assemblages were studied in relation to water chemistry and habitat character in lowland ponds of Koshi Tappu, Nepal. Epiphytic assemblages from different microhabitats, such as morphologically different plants, roots, stems, filamentous algae and decomposing leaves, within the same ponds were similar. Assemblage composition of epiphytic diatoms reflected gradients in water chemistry and habitat character of the pond with respect to pond vegetation and substratum type, bank profile and land use in the catchment. Epiphytic and epipelic assemblages responded to chemical gradients in the surface water, particularly concentrations of Ca, Mg and Na, but epipelic diatoms also indicated differences in SO4. Epipelic diatoms were also sensitive to interstitial water chemistry variations in PO4, Si, Ca and Mg. There were no relationships between species richness, diversity or evenness and gradients in water chemistry and habitat character. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Although epipelic diatoms play a key role in primary production of many ecosystems, many aspects of their biodiversity, ecology and geographical distribution are poorly understood. The present study is based on sampling of 45 man-made fishponds in the Czech Republic covering an environmental gradient from oligo/dystrophic highland ponds within protected areas to the eutrophic/hypertrophic lowland ponds used for intensive fish production. Diatom distribution patterns assessed using biomass and species composition variables were assessed along environmental and geographical gradients. In total, 185 epipelic diatom taxa were found in the investigated samples. The differences in species composition between sites were correlated with environmental parameters, but not with the geographic distance of the localities. This pattern might suggest that niche-based control, rather than the effect of dispersal limitation, is the main driving force in the species composition of epipelic diatoms in fishponds. The alpha-diversity of sites correlated with altitude, nitrogen and chlorophyll a concentrations but did not correlate with the area of the ponds. The significant relationships between local abundance of species and their regional occupancy were very similar to previous studies of diatoms in boreal streams. In addition, these data concur with patterns known for multicellular organisms suggesting that in this respect diatoms may not differ from groups of organisms with larger body sizes. Although benthic diatoms are used to assess river water quality, there are few data on the rate at which diatom assemblages react to changes in water quality. The aim of this study was to assess the reaction time of diatoms and to discuss the changes occurring during water quality improvement on the basis of their autecological characteristics. In order to simulate this improvement, diatom-dominated biofilms grown on artificial sandstone substrata were transferred from several polluted rivers to an unpolluted river. They were sampled three times: before transfer and 1 and 2 months after transfer. The ecology and growth-forms of the taxa explained most of the changes in species composition observed during the experiment. Adnate diatoms gradually replaced motile and stalked taxa. Gomphonema parvulum, a stalked diatom positioned vertically in the biofilm, is adapted for light and space competition in high-density algal biofilms. When transferred to an unpolluted site, this growth-form is less competitive and does not tolerate the high grazing pressure. Fistulifera saprophila is a single celled motile diatom, living in organic matrices. When the artificial substrata were transferred to the unpolluted site, this particular ecological niche disappeared quickly. On the other hand, Achnanthidium minutissimum, which is considered to be cosmopolitan and an early colonizer, increased during the first month of transfer and then decreased. It was gradually replaced by A. biasolettianum, which was the taxon best suited to this pristine stream. The changes observed differed between treatments depending on the species composition and architecture of the biofilms. In particular, biofilms dominated by stalked and motile diatoms were more quickly modified than those dominated by small motile diatoms. The diatom index reflects these changes, and its values showed that about 60 days following a water quality improvement were necessary for transferred diatom assemblages to reach diatom index values similar as those at the unpolluted river.  相似文献

Diatoms are commonly and frequently used as water quality indicators, but only a few studies have been done to evaluate the importance of littoral, contemporary diatoms as bioindicators. This study aims to determine the main predictors of diatom community composition from 73 Swedish lakes. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) revealed pH, phosphate, nitrite/nitrate levels, longitude and percentage of forest in the catchment to be the most important factors of 51 environmental variables for structuring diatom assemblages. Cluster analysis separated the lakes into three groups based on the diatom community composition. Lakes belonging to these groups were characterised as: (1) acidic, nutrient-poor; (2) circumneutral, nutrient-poor and (3) alkaline, nutrient-rich, according to the results of a discriminant function analysis and dominant diatom taxa revealed by similarity percentage analysis. Ecological guilds according to growth morphology and the ability of nitrogen-fixation were assigned to all diatom taxa. All three lake groups exhibited a distinct guild composition. Nitrogen-fixing diatoms were found in nutrient-rich lakes, only. Our results indicate that taxonomical composition of littoral diatom assemblages can be applied in the assessment of nutrient and acidity status of Swedish lakes. Differences in distribution of the ecological guilds were connected to several environmental factors such as nutrients, light and grazing; their application in assessment of trophic status of lakes is therefore precarious.  相似文献

We compared the use of epilithic, epiphytic, and epipelic diatom communities in stream biomonitoring by investigating species composition and relationships with measured water quality variables in two tributaries of the Grand River, Ontario, Canada. Although ordination showed some separation of the epilithon from other habitats, clear habitat preferences and seasonality were not identified. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that measured water quality variables explained the major gradients in the diatom data for all three habitats. The diatoms from each habitat were strongly related to alkalinity, suspended solids, biological oxygen demand and conductivity, and in addition, epipelic and epiphytic diatoms showed significant relationships with total phosphorus. It was concluded that although some species were more abundant in one habitat than the others, the community structure of the epilithic, epiphytic and epipelic habitats from these streams was not consistently different. The results indicate no apparent benefit to sampling discrete habitats for water quality monitoring using diatoms, however, the best relationship are obtained using the sum of the diatom data from all three habitats.  相似文献

The Greater Yellowstone Area ecosystem experienced major wildfires in 1988, resulting in a substantial number of catchments being burned. We studied diatom assemblage structure at 14 sites over 5 years in catchments ranging from 0 to over 90% burned. Coefficients of variation for selected physical measures provided a good assessment of the degree of disturbance experienced by the various sites and correlated highly with percentage of catchment burned. Principal components analysis quantitatively estimated the degree of temporal change in diatom assemblages at a site. The more extensively burned catchments showed the greatest amount of structural change in diatom taxa among years. Navicula permitis Hust. and Nitzschia inconspicua Grun. were predominant in the heavily disturbed systems, whereas Achnanthes minutissima Kuetz., A. lanceolata (Breb.) Grun., Rhoicosphenia curvata (Kuetz.) Grun. ex Rabh., and Diatoma hiemale var. mesodon (Ehr.) Grun. were common in less disturbed streams. The results demonstrate that recovery trajectories of lotic diatom assemblages following major landscape-scale disturbances are a function of disturbance intensity resulting from differences in catchment characteristics.  相似文献

Diatom communities along stream longitudinal gradients   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
1. Summer diatom communities on artificial substrates were sampled weekly for a month in three first- to sixth-order tributaries of the Kentucky River to determine how community structure varied with stream size. 2. Diatom cell abundances were generally higher in the headwaters. Species diversity increased in a downstream direction in two of the streams, and in an upstream direction in the third. However, diversity in general seemed more closely related to current regimes than to stream size per se, with highest species diversity at intermediate current velocities. 3. Variation in diatom accumulation rates was greater in downstream communities than in the headwater assemblages of two streams, suggesting that downstream communities may experience greater fluctuations in abundance, at least under low-flow conditions. 4. Patterns of species distributions suggested a relationship between morphological growth forms (guilds) and stream size, as well as the influence of current. Achnanthes spp., Eunotia spp., erect, and stalked taxa were more commonly associated with headwater assemblages. Filamentous and centric diatoms occurred with greater frequency downstream.  相似文献

The composition (% relative abundance) of diatom assemblages from soft bottom sediments was studied at 75 sites situated in 46 rivers, brooks, and ditches in the islands of Hiiumaa and Saaremaa and in the lowland of West Estonia. Although the total number of recorded taxa was 205, the studied diatom assemblages consisted of 54, 55, 48, and 50 constant species in the drainage basin of Moonsund, the Gulf of Riga, Hiiumaa, and Saaremaa, respectively. The habitats of the dominating taxa were heterogenous and the most widespread species were Achnanthidium minutissimum, Martyana martyi, Meridion circulare, Cocconeis placentula, Planothidium lanceolatum, and Amphora pediculus. The Shannon–Weaver diversity (H) index varied from 2.09 to 4.63. Multivariate analyses were used to identify the environmental variables governing the composition and structure of the benthic diatom assemblage. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Redundancy Analysis (RDA), based on 56 most abundant taxa, indicated differences in the composition and structure of diatom assemblages between different drainage basins as well as between the upper and lower stream courses. In the headwaters there prevailed small epipsammic diatoms (Martyana, Planothidium, Staurosira, Staurosirella). Different motile epipelic species from the genera Amphora, Navicula, Nitzschia, etc. were distributed abundantly in the lower courses of the streams. There was a positive correlation between order of the stream site and trophic level of water (R=0.35; p<0.05). Along a river system, the increasing order of the stream was accompanied by higher trophic level of water.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Surprisingly few data compare the apparent responses of diatoms and macroinvertebrates to metals in streams. We examined variation in metals, diatoms and macroinvertebrates between 51 streams in metal‐mining areas of Wales and Cornwall, U.K., using a survey design with multiple reference and polluted sites. 2. To quantify variations in metals between sites, we calculated cumulative criterion unit (CCU) scores, a recently defined measure of total stream metal concentration and toxicity, to account for additive effects of each metal relative to putative toxic thresholds. We compared assemblage responses among epilithic diatoms and macroinvertebrates to CCU scores or individual metal concentrations using correlation and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). 3. Macroinvertebrate diversity, richness and total abundance declined and evenness increased with increasing copper concentrations. Trends with CCU scores were significant but less pronounced. Some individual macroinvertebrate taxa varied significantly in abundance with CCU scores, copper or zinc, but overall assemblage composition correlated only with manganese, pH and nitrate. 4. Among diatoms, pH and conductivity explained the major variations in assemblage composition, and neither diversity, richness nor evenness varied with metal concentration. Nevertheless, the single strongest predictor of diatom assemblages on ordination axis 2 was the CCU score. The abundances of some macroinvertebrate taxa, particularly grazers, also explained significant variations in diatom assemblages that were linked to both metals and acid–base status. 5. Diatom species apparently tolerant of high metal concentrations included Psammothidium helveticum, Eunotia subarcuatoides, Pinnularia subcapitata and Sellaphora seminulum. Of these, P. helveticum, E. subarcuatoides and P. subcapitata were abundant at lower pH than S.seminulum and might indicate metal enrichment over different pH ranges. Sensitive species included Fragilaria capucina var. rumpens, Achnanthes oblongella and Tabellaria flocculosa. 6. We conclude that macroinvertebrates at these sites reflected metal pollution most strongly through variations in diversity while effects on diatoms were best reflected by changes in assemblage composition. We suggest that, with further refinement, CCU scores might be useful in evaluating the possible effects of metal pollution on benthic organisms in European rivers.  相似文献

Epiphytic, epilithic, and surface sediment diatom assemblages were identified and enumerated from 35 study ponds on CapeHerschel (78°37″N, 74°42″W), east-central Ellesmere Island, Canada. All the sites are shallow (maximum depth <2 m), clear, oligotrophic, and freshwater. The ponds freeze completely for 10 months of the year. Major ion concentrations are relatively similar among the 35 sites, although environmental gradients exist. Over 130 diatom taxa from 28 genera were identified in the periphyton samples. Marked differences in species composition were evident among the ponds. Moreover, many of the diatoms exhibited varying degrees of microhabitat specificity. Variance partitioning by canonical correspondence analysis showed that 26% of the total variance exhibited by diatom species composition could be accounted for by the measured environmental variables (i.e. 10.2% by habitat and 15.8% by water chemistry). Pondwater alkalinity best explained the distribution of taxa, and weighted averaging regression and calibration were used to develop a transfer function to infer pondwater alkalinity from the diatom assemblages. Other important environmental variables included [Na+] for the epilithic and [SiO2] for the epiphytic assemblages.  相似文献

Three diatom ecological guilds were distinguished based on their potential to tolerate nutrient limitation and physical disturbance, i.e. a low profile, high profile, and motile guild. The guild distributions were examined along nutrient and flow disturbance gradients and across habitats in two extensively sampled streams. The guilds showed distinct distributional patterns, i.e. the low profile guild was favored in nutrient-poor and high disturbance habitats; the high profile guild reached a maximum in nutrient-rich sites and in conditions of low flow disturbance; and the motile guild increased along the nutrient gradients and decreased along the disturbance gradient. Guild distribution was habitat-specific: the low profile guild dominated the epipsammon, the high profile guild showed preference for epilithon and epiphyton, and the motile guild—for epipelon. The highest guild diversity was observed at high nutrient levels across all habitats, at higher flow disturbance levels, and in the epipelon and epiphyton. Comparisons of species, guild, and environmental distances, derived from species counts, guild abundance, and physico-chemical data, respectively, revealed high congruence between species–environment and guild–environment correlations. The predictable behavior of the three ecological guilds along nutrient and disturbance gradients, and across major benthic habitats elucidates the functional value of different diatom growth morphologies in species–environment interactions and suggests a potential use in ecological assessments of human-impacted ecosystems.  相似文献

Functional-based assessments to identify the effects of human-induced disturbances on diatom communities are increasingly used. However, information on the response of functional groups to natural disturbances in temporary depressional wetlands is limited although important for the development of temporary wetland biological assessments. We assessed how diatom life-form and ecological guilds responded to a seasonal hydrological and hydrochemical gradient in three least human-disturbed, temporary depressional wetlands. We assigned species to their respective life-form and ecological guild groups and compared metric composition along the gradient. Overall, temporal variability in alkalinity and ionic composition, essentially Na+, as well as hydrological factors, wetland depth and total relative evapotranspiration (ETo), were good predictors of diatom species and functional group composition. Low profile guilds dominated by pioneer life-forms showed the strongest relationship with higher disturbance levels (i.e. increasing Na+, alkalinity with a decrease in depth). Similarly, the planktonic guild and tube-living, rosette and adnate life-forms dominated at higher disturbance levels whereas the high profile diatoms displayed the reverse trend. Our study shows the effectiveness of functional-based assessments beyond traditional species-based approaches for understanding and predicting community responses to temporal changes in environmental conditions. We also highlight the benefit of using both life-forms and ecological guilds where a broad set of metrics can enhance our understanding of the mechanisms relating diatom composition to environmental stressors and provide signs of underlying ecological processes.  相似文献

The Cuyahoga River is a heavily polluted tributary of Lake Erie located in N. E. Ohio (USA).One hundred seventy taxa of diatoms were identified from seven locations along the Cuyahoga River. The most frequently collected diatoms from each station were Cyclotella meneghiniana, Gomphonema parvulum, Navicula cryptocephala, N. cryptocephala var. veneta, N. lanceolata, N. menisculus, N. minima, N. minuscula, N. pelliculosa, Nitzschia amphibia, N. ovalis, N. palea, and Rhoicosphenia curvata. In the most heavily damaged region of the river these widely-distributed taxa were the only frequently collected diatoms. The relatively undamaged section of the river contained 94% more taxa than the most heavily damaged section. Chief among these additional taxa were Achnanthes lanceolata, A. lanceolata var. dubia, Cocconeisplacentula, Fragilaria vaucheriae, Melosira varians, Meridion circulare, Navicula mutica var. tropica, N. symetrica, Nitzschia dissipata, Stephanodiscus astraea, and Synedra rumpens. The degree of similarity between diatom assemblages along the Cuyahoga River as measured by a modification of Sørensen's index of similarity in species-frequency of occurrence composition was related to the degree of chemical-physical water quality similarities and to the extent of similarity between areas of geologic and biologic substrates. The most dissimilar diatom assemblages usually occurred between locations that were the most dissimilar with respect to chemical-physical water quality conditions rather than to dissimilarities with respect to sediment-substrate composition.  相似文献

This study examines distributional patterns of benthic diatom assemblages in relation to environmental characteristics in streams and rivers in the California Central Valley ecoregion. Benthic diatoms, water quality, and physical habitat conditions were characterized from 53 randomly selected sites. The stream sites were characterized by low mid-channel canopy cover and high channel substrate embeddedness. The waters at these sites were enriched with minerals and turbidity varied from 1.3 to 185.0 NTU with an average of 13.5 NTU. A total of 249 diatom taxa were identified. Average taxa richness was 41 with a range of 7–76. The assemblages were dominated by Staurosira construens (11%), Epithemia sorex (8%), Cocconeis placentula (7%), and Nitzschia amphibia (6%). Multivariate analyses (cluster analysis, classification tree analysis, and canonical correspondence analysis) all showed that benthic diatom assemblages were mainly affected by channel morphology, in-stream habitat, and riparian conditions. The 1st CCA axis negatively correlated with mean wetted channel width (r = −0.66) and thalweg depth (r = −0.65) (Table 4). The 2nd axis correlated with % coarse substrates (r=0.60). Our results suggest that benthic diatoms can be used for assessing physical habitat alterations in streams.  相似文献

Models of the diatom associations found in upper Florida Bay and adjoining sounds have been constructed utilizing Q modal factor-vector analysis and ecologic diversity indices (Shannon index, number of species, evenness). Four distinct associations were defined using Q-mode factor-vector analysis. Two associations were epiphytic, occurring on Thalassia testudinum König—Association I was characterized by Cocconeis placentula Ehr., Association III by Cylindrotheca closterium (Ehr.) Reim. & Lewin and Cocconeis placentula Ehr. The other two associations were epipelic, occurring on the carbonate mud substratum—Association II was characterized by Cyclotella striata (Kütz.) Grun., Rhopalodia gibberula (Ehr.) O. Müller and Surirella fastuosa (Ehr.) Kütz., Association IV by Fragilaria crotonensis Kitton and Cyclotella striata (Kütz.) Grun. The majority of the 161 species identified were present in both the epiphytic and epipelic assemblages. Only 33 species were restricted to the epiphyton, and 18 species restricted to the epipelon. The epipelic assemblage was significantly more diverse than was the epiphytic assemblage. A general trend of increased diversity away from terrestrial environs toward more open areas of water in both the epipelon and epiphyton was also found.  相似文献

Drought is a natural phenomenon experienced by many intermittent and also seasonal lotic systems. It has diverse effects on the structure and distribution of biological communities through habitat transition from wetted to terrestrial conditions. The Njoro River, a tropical stream, was drought‐stressed between late 1999 and mid 2000, providing an opportunity to sample and describe the distributional patterns of diatoms and Limnodrilus oligochaetes in the vertical sediment profile. The dispersion of Limnodrilus oligochaetes with sediment depth profile varied from quasi‐random (i.e. exponent k of the negative binomial distribution >2.0 or <0) at the surface to strong aggregation (0 < k < 1.0) in the deeper sediments. Diatoms were heterogenous, with most species contributing less than 1% of all the diatoms collected from the riverbed. Contagious dispersion was a common feature among the diatom species. The distribution of Fragilaria ulna was largely quasi‐random in all sites, with Nitzschia amphibia and Cocconeis placentula demonstrating quasi‐random distribution in the Kerma vertical sediment profile. Escape from stranding to deeper sediment strata as the drought progressed was not a universal response among the diatom species. Our results showed that drought‐stress altered the structure of biological assemblages and also emphasized the need for the management of tropical lotic systems and their catchments for flow permanence. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of environmental variables on the structure of benthic diatom assemblages, and to propose type assemblages of diatoms characterizing unpolluted headwater streams of Luxembourg. A total of 289 diatom samples were collected in the headwater streams of Luxembourg. At each sampling site, physical and chemical variables were also measured. The relationships between environmental variables and the distribution of the taxa were estimated using univariate and multivariate statistical analyses. On the basis of geology and stream water chemistry, Luxembourg could be separated in two regions. The streams in the schistose northern part of Luxembourg presented a low carbonate hardness (median 3.5° F); the streams in the southern part of Luxembourg presented a high carbonate hardness (median 21.8° F) notably connected to the presence of sandstone and limestone substrata. A Twinspan classification carried out on diatom assemblages defined two groups of samples corresponding to these two regions. The carbonate hardness that is related to the nature of the geological substratum appeared to be the major structuring variable for the assemblage composition. Anthropogenic pollution was a secondary structuring variable for diatom assemblages since each group could be subdivided in subgroups presenting statistically different nutrient and organic matter concentrations. The diatom assemblages of these subgroups were characterised by differences of saprobic and trophic preferences. On the basis of these results, two type assemblages of diatoms are proposed for the unpolluted headwater streams in the two regions of Luxembourg. The presence of these different type assemblages in Luxembourg shows the necessity to adapt diatom bioindication to the different regions of the country.  相似文献

During the period March–May 1991, sediment samples were taken every two or three days at one intertidal station in the brackish part of the Westerschelde estuary. Quantitative cell counts were made in order to investigate the short-term temporal changes in diatom numbers and assemblage structure.Throughout the whole sampling period, the diatom assemblage was dominated by epipsammic diatoms. Three species, Achnanthes delicatula, Opephora cf. perminuta and Catenula adhaerens on average accounted for almost 67% of all valves counted. The epipsammic diatom fraction showed no significant changes in absolute numbers; its species composition appeared relatively stable. In contrast, epipelic diatom densities significantly increased towards the end of the study period. Species composition within this fraction was less stable. Multivariate analysis (Principal Components Analysis), in combination with multiple regression, indicated that total sky irradiance (on the second and third day preceding sampling) and percentage organic matter were related to the short-term fluctuations of the epipelic diatom fraction.  相似文献

The effects of urban pollution from Hanoi city on the benthic diatom communities of the Nhue–Tolich river system were studied during the 2003 dry season. Benthic diatoms were allowed to grow on glass slides suspended in the water flow for 4 weeks. To reveal the relationship between water quality and diatom communities, Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used on data concerning relative abundances of diatom species and environmental variables. Two diatom indices, IPS and DAIpo, were applied to evaluate water quality in the three rivers. A total of 291 diatom taxa were found in the Red, Nhue and Tolich Rivers. These were mainly cosmopolitan taxa, with some tropical, subtropical and endemic taxa. The most abundant taxa at the Red site were Aulacoseira granulata, Achnanthidium minutissimum, Encyonema minutum, Navicula recens and other halophilous taxa such as Nitzschia kurzii, Seminavis strigosa, Entomoneis paludosa, Bacillaria paradoxa. Diatom assemblages at the Tolich site consisted mainly of Nitzschia umbonata, Nitzschia palea and Eolimna minima. Diatom density ranged from 660 to 30,000 cells/cm2. Environmental variables and diatom assemblage composition at all sites were significantly correlated. Two diatom indices gave similar results and indicate the Tolich River with the lowest values as a highly polluted site.  相似文献

We evaluated the existence of trophic guild structure, considering seasonal and annual variation, in two terrestrial carnivore assemblages: one from Santa Cruz province (Argentinean Patagonia, composed by six carnivore species), and the other from Doñana National Park (SW Spain, composed by five carnivore species). To identify trophic guilds, we first studied seasonal and annual diets of predators, calculated trophic overlap among species pairs, and then constructed overlap matrices (similarity matrices). We determined guild membership objectively by entering the similarity matrices into the clustering technique unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic averaging. Carnivores from both assemblages were grouped, respectively, into four feeding guilds. Lagomorphs and rodents promoted the formation of two feeding guilds in both study sites, although the taxonomic composition of predator species that composed them was different. The ungulates-edentates feeding guild was only present at Santa Cruz, whereas the birds and reptiles feeding guild was only present at Doñana. Invertebrates and fruits were the base for the formation of a guild composed by species of the same taxonomic origin both in Santa Cruz and Doñana. Guild structure of Santa Cruz and Doñana assemblages did not exhibit seasonal or annual variation, although the specific guild composition changed over the two studied periods for both assemblages. This structure probably responded to discontinuities in resource spectra in Santa Cruz and fluctuations in rabbit abundance in Doñana. Our results support the hypothesis that establishes that guilds are originated by opportunistic convergence of species on abundant and energetically rewarding resources.  相似文献
