Lack of biodiversity data is a major impediment to prioritizing sites for species representation. Because comprehensive species data are not available in any planning area, planners often use surrogates (such as vegetation communities, or mapped occurrences of a well‐inventoried taxon) to prioritize sites. We propose and demonstrate the effectiveness of predicted rarity‐weighted richness (PRWR) as a surrogate in situations where species inventories may be available for a portion of the planning area. Use of PRWR as a surrogate involves several steps. First, rarity‐weighted richness (RWR) is calculated from species inventories for a q% subset of sites. Then random forest models are used to model RWR as a function of freely available environmental variables for that q% subset. This function is then used to calculate PRWR for all sites (including those for which no species inventories are available), and PRWR is used to prioritize all sites. We tested PRWR on plant and bird datasets, using the species accumulation index to measure efficiency of PRWR. Sites with the highest PRWR represented species with median efficiency of 56% (range 32%–77% across six datasets) when q = 20%, and with median efficiency of 39% (range 20%–63%) when q = 10%. An efficiency of 56% means that selecting sites in order of PRWR rank was 56% as effective as having full knowledge of species distributions in PRWR's ability to improve on the number of species represented in the same number of randomly selected sites. Our results suggest that PRWR may be able to help prioritize sites to represent species if a planner has species inventories for 10%–20% of the sites in the planning area.  相似文献

Serological techniques of double diffusion (Ouchterlony) and nephelometry (Boyden Procedure) were employed to analyze the serological correspondence of taxa belonging to the Caprifoliaceae with selected taxa belonging to the Rubiaceae and the Cornaceae. Cornus (Cornaceae) exhibited relatively high correspondence with most representatives of the Caprifoliaceae, especially with Sambucus. The correspondence of Viburnum with Cornus was low. The serological correspondence of genera of the Caprifoliaceae with three genera of the Rubiaceae was relatively low indicating that these two families are serologically distinct. The correspondence between the Caprifoliaceae and the Cornaceae suggests a closer relationship between these two families than between the Caprifoliaceae and the tested genera of the Rubiaceae. These limited data suggest that the Rubiaceae and the Caprifoliaceae should not be placed in one taxonomic order. However, the serological variation for additional taxa within the Rubiaceae must be ascertained before more conclusive statements can be made relative to the degree of serological similarity between the two families.  相似文献

We present a study of soil organic carbon (SOC) inventories and δ13C values for 625 soil cores collected from well‐drained, coarse‐textured soils in eight areas along a 1000 km moisture gradient from Southern Botswana, north into southern Zambia. The spatial distribution of trees and grass in the desert, savannah and woodland ecosystems along the transect control large systematic local variations in both SOC inventories and δ13C values. A stratified sampling approach was used to smooth this variability and obtain robust weighted‐mean estimates for both parameters. Weighted SOC inventories in the 0–5 cm interval of the soils range from 7 mg cm?2 in the driest area (mean annual precipitation, MAP=225 mm) to 41±12 mg cm?2 in the wettest area (MAP=910 mm). For the 0–30 cm interval, the inventories are 37.8 mg cm?2 for the driest region and 157±33 mg cm?2 for the wettest region. SOC inventories at intermediate sites increase as MAP increases to approximately 400–500 mm, but remain approximately constant thereafter. This plateau may be the result of feedbacks between MAP, fuel load and fire frequency. Weighted δ 13C values decrease linearly in both the 0–5 and 0–30 cm depth intervals as MAP increases. A value of –17.5±1.0‰ characterizes the driest areas, while a value of ?25±0.7‰ characterizes the wettest area. The decrease in δ 13C value with increasing MAP reflects an increasing dominance of C3 vegetation as MAP increases. SOC in the deeper soil (5–30 cm depth) is, on average, 0.4±0.3‰ enriched in 13C relative to SOC in the 0–5 cm interval.  相似文献

Allometric equations for the estimation of tree volume and aboveground biomass in a tropical humid forest were developed based on direct measurements of 19 individuals of seven tree species in Northern Costa Rica. The volume and the biomass of the stems represented about two‐thirds of the total volume and total aboveground biomass, respectively. The average stem volume varied between 4 and 11 Mg/tree and the average total aboveground biomass ranged from 4 to 10 mg/tree. The mean specific gravity of the sampled trees was 0.62 ± 0.06 (g/cm3). The average biomass expansion factor was 1.6 ± 0.2. The best‐fit equations for stem and total volume were of logarithmic form, with diameter at breast height (R2= 0.66 ? 0.81) as an independent variable. The best‐fit equations for total aboveground biomass that were based on combinations of diameter at breast height, and total and commercial height as independent variables had R2 values between 0.77 and 0.87. Models recommended for estimating total aboveground biomass are based on diameter at breast height, because the simplicity of these models is advantageous. This variable is easy to measure accurately in the field and is the most common variable recorded in forest inventories. Two widely used models in literature tend to underestimate aboveground biomass in large trees. In contrast, the models developed in this study accurately estimate the total aboveground biomass in these trees.  相似文献

Validation of the Brazilian versions of two inventories for measuring oral health‐related quality of life of edentulous subjects Objectives: To analyse the validity of the Brazilian versions of OHIP‐EDENT and GOHAI as assessment tools of edentulous subjects’ OHRQoL. Background: Inventories for measuring oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) are important in clinical studies regarding oral rehabilitation. However, there is a need for comprehensive validation after translation into different cultural settings. Materials and methods: The sample comprised of 100 complete denture wearers (29 men, 71 women, mean age of 65.2 ± 9.9 years). The associations between each OHRQoL inventory and other variables served as measurements of construct validity. Data analysis comprised the Spearman correlation test as well as multiple regression using the OHRQoL inventories as dependent variables and the other scales as determinants. Results: Both OHRQoL inventories showed good correlation with denture satisfaction, whereas lower correlation coefficients were found among the inventories and the HAD subscales. Denture satisfaction alone explained 48% and 39% of the variance found for the OHIP‐EDENT and GOHAI, respectively, as assessed by multiple regression. A smaller effect was found for OHIP‐EDENT. Conclusion: Both OHIP‐EDENT and GOHAI showed good construct validity for measurement of OHRQoL of edentulous subjects.  相似文献

Surface diatom samples were collected from two saltmarshes in the Seymour–Belize Inlet Complex on the mainland coast of British Columbia to examine the controls on diatom distribution and provide training sets for regional studies of sea-level change. Cluster analysis and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) were used to examine diatom distributions within and between the two marshes whilst canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and partial canonical correspondence analysis (pCCA) were used to analyse species–environment relationships. The diatom assemblages were shown to be quite different between the two marshes, Waump and Wawwat'l. Q-mode cluster analysis separated the diatom assemblages from Waump into three zones corresponding to recognized vegetation zones; diatom zone C corresponds to the high marsh and is dominated by Pinnularia obscura, Caloneis bacillum and Diploneis ovalis, zone B spans the high- and mid marsh and is characterised by Fragilaria exigua, Nitzchia palea and D. ovalis, whilst zone A from the low marsh/tidal flat includes high frequencies of Diploneis smithii, Ctenophora pulchella and F. exigua. Three different diatom zones were recognised at Wawwat'l; two upper zones, E and F, corresponding to the mid-marsh which are dominated by mixed abundances of N. palea and Fragilaria construens var. venter, Navicula peregrina and Navicula clementis and zone D from the low marsh/tidal flat with increased frequencies of F. exigua and Achnanthes delicatula. At Waump, the major controls on diatom distribution were found to be elevation and to a lesser extent pH, whilst at Wawwat'l, the primary controls were grain size/organic content, conductivity and elevation. The results confirm that saltmarsh diatoms may have potential for future sea-level studies in this region. However, caution must be exercised as the significant difference in the diatom assemblages between the two marshes suggests that the diatoms are responding to a number of environmental variables on a local scale. Some of this variation may reflect highly seasonal changes in sedimentation and salinity resulting from the proximity of the marshes to adjacent streams which are subject to spring freshet. Local differences in elevation between the collected samples may also account for some of the assemblage variability. The results emphasize the great diversity and high sensitivity of intertidal diatom species to environmental controls.  相似文献

Calculation of the area under the disease-progress curve (AUDPC) as a measure of quantitative disease resistance entails repeated disease assessments. For typical sigmoid disease-progress curves, repeated assessments may be unnecessary. A mathematical procedure is derived for estimating the AUDPC from two data points. A field trial with ten cultivars with and without the gene Yr18 for resistance to stripe rust were inoculated with two pathotypes of Puccinia striiformis (from the cultivars Karamu and Oroua) and assessed for the percentage leaf area infected seven or eight times during the growing season. The AUDPCs were calculated directly from data and estimated from the described equation. Calculated values were plotted and ranked against estimated values, and excellent correspondence was obtained (Spearman’s Rank Correlation in the Karamu trial= 0.9879 and the Oroua trial=0.9515). Therefore, an estimation of the AUDPC from two data points provides an equivalent amount of information as from repeated assessments. Received: 23 September 1999 / Accepted: 14 April 2000  相似文献

Butterflies are widely used in biodiversity surveys, and several methods of relative abundance counts have been developed. The most frequently used linear transects are praised for a good replicability, but recently have been criticised for poor species detecting ability, especially for poorly visible or extremely sedentary species. As an alternative, timed surveys, based on zigzagging study sites and flexibly checking transient butterfly resources, have been proposed by some authors. We tested the utility of the two methods while studying the effect of restoration practices on butterfly assemblages in limestone quarries in the Czech Republic. Numbers of species and individuals detected per 10 min transect walk were compared with numbers of species and individuals detected during 10 min timed survey. Mobile and imperceptible species were compared in separate analyses as a measure of detection efficiency. More species and individuals per visit were recorded by timed surveys. No difference in detectability of mobile and imperceptible species between both methods used was observed. Whereas linear transects will probably remain the method of choice for long-term monitoring programs employing armies of recorders, timed surveys appear more appropriate for studies in which it is important to obtain the most comprehensive check-list of species occurring at study sites, which is often the case in conservation inventories in species rich regions with limited number of experienced researchers.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate the genetic variation in Danish populations of the endangered European crab apple (Malus sylvestris). Special emphasis was given to hybridization between the wild species and its cultivated relative Malus ×domestica. A total of 178 wild individuals from four Danish populations were studied along with a reference sample of 29 old cultivars. The genetic variation within and among samples was studied at ten microsatellite marker loci. Additionally, a morphological analysis was carried out to identify hybrids and test for correspondence between phenotypic and genotypic indices of hybridization. From application of ordination and a model-based cluster analysis to the molecular data, two clusters were identified consisting of wild and cultivated individuals, respectively. This indicates that pronounced admixture between the two species is not present. At the population level, a high correspondence was found between geographic isolation from M. ×domestica and genotypic and morphological indices of hybridization. As expected, isolated populations appeared less affected by hybridization than poorly isolated populations. Isolated “pure” M. sylvestris populations could thus be identified. However, morphological and molecular evidences of hybridization were found to be divergent at the individual level. This is suggestive of some historical introgression into the M. sylvestris gene pool and indicates that relying exclusively on either morphological or molecular characters as diagnostic markers in studies of hybridization between M. ×domestica and M. sylvestris might lead to fallible results. Combined application of genetic and morphological markers is therefore recommended.  相似文献

The comparative study of the karyotypes of Microcebus (Lemur, Cheirogaleid) and Cebus (Platyrrhini, Ceboid) shows important similarities between nearly all large chromosomes of these two genera. Since a relationship has been previously found between the Karyotypes of Homo and Cebus, a correspondence may be found between many chromosomes of man and those of Lemurs. In order to test the hypothesis that mistletoes (Phoradendron tomentosum) are differentially adapted for the host species that they occur on, mistletoe seeds from the three most common hosts in central Texas (hackberry, Celtis occidentalis, elm, Ulmus crassifolia, and mesquite, Prosopsis glandulosa) were planted onto different individuals of each of the three hosts. Germination of seeds and formation of haustorial disks by seedlings were followed in the subsequent 17 months. Germination of seeds was very high for all nine combinations of maternal (source) and seed (experimental) hosts (range 82%–98%). There were no significant differences in seed germination between the two groups when source and experimental hosts were the same species and when they were different species. In contrast, development of haustorial disks when source and experimental hosts were the same species was significantly greater than when experimental host and source host species were different. The data suggest that populations of mistletoes are genetically differentiated such that early seedling development is greatest when there is correspondence between maternal and seedling host species.  相似文献

In Japan, Stigmaeopsis miscanthi (Saito) occurs in two forms that are differentiated by the intensity of male-to-male aggression, i.e. there is a low aggression and a high aggression group (known as the LW and HG forms, respectively). The effects of counterattack behavior against predators were experimentally compared between the two forms. Parental males and females of both forms could achieve significant counterattack success against Typhlodromus bambusae, a specific predator, and counterattack efficiency increased significantly with parental density. Furthermore, the HG form showed a stronger tendency than the LW form to kill predator larvae. Thus, variation in counterattack success may exist between these two forms, and there is some correspondence between male-to-male belligerence and counterattack effectiveness against predators.  相似文献

Ricotta argues against the existence of a unique measure of biodiversity by pointing out that no known measure of α-diversity satisfies all the adequacy conditions that have traditionally been set for it. While that technical claim is correct, it is not relevant in the context of defining biodiversity which is most usefully measured by β-diversity. The concept of complementarity provides a closely related family of measures of biodiversity which can be used for systematic conservation planning. Moreover, these measures cannot be replaced by summary statistics but must rely on inventories of biodiversity surrogates at candidate sites for conservation.  相似文献

Since penguins rely on the main planktonic resources of the Southern Ocean, knowledge of their diet may be used for monitoring these resources During winter and spring of 1987 and 1989, we investigated the composition of the diet of gentoo penguins. Pygoscelis papua, in relation to changes in the availability of two prey species, Euphausia vallentini and Themisto gaudichaudii, sampled during plankton surveys in the Kerguelen Islands. The comparison between plankton surveys and diet analysis was performed on samples taken 2–4 km from the studied colonies. Data on the abundance of Zooplankton derived from penguins' diet matched closely those from net hauls during a year of high plankton availability (1987). On the other hand, a weaker correspondence was found during a year of restricted availability (1989). The mean sizes of amphipods caught by penguins and net hauls were very similar but the size distribution showed comparatively fewer small and large individuals in net-hauls than in penguin stomachs. Detailed studies on the feeding range and foraging effort of penguins are therefore needed in the near future to validate the potential of penguin diet as a measure of plankton abundance.  相似文献

The humification index (HI) values of three different manures and earthworm casts were calculated for three different extractant solutions (0.5M sodium hydroxide, 0.1M sodium pyrophosphate pH 7 and 0.1M sodium pyrophosphate plus 0.1M NaOH). The alkaline sodium pyrophosphate solution was found to be the most suitable because of both its extraction efficiency and the quality of the organic matter extracted which allows a good characterization of the stabilization degree attained by composting. Neutral sodium pyrophosphate extracts also show characteristic HI values for different samples but lower extraction efficiencies. The HI values for sodium hydroxide extracts show only little differences between manures and composts. The good correspondence found between HI data and isoelectric focusing (IEF) patterns confirmed on one side that humification indexes give a quantitative measure of the humification degree, on the other side that IEF is a suitable technique in order to obtain qualitative informations on organic matter stabilization in earthworm casts.  相似文献

Neuronal spike trains are regarded as stochastic point processes. To estimate the order and value of Markov processes of the interspike interval sequences with small number of samples, we have proposed a new measure of simplified statistical dependencyd m. This measure is derived from statistical dependencyd m (T=) in the case of Gaussian process, and is obtained by the standard deviation and the matrices of the serial correlation coefficients. Sinced m is a parametric measure, it is calculated from the interval sequence transformed into the aormal distribution. We designate this as normalized simplified statistical dependencyNd m. The order and value of the maintained spike sequences recorded from the mesencephalic reticular formation, red nucleus, optic tract, and lateral geniculate nucleus neurons in cats have been estimated. It is indicated that there is a considerable correspondence between the value ofNd m and that ofd m (T=). This suggests thatNd m is useful in practice to estimate the order and value of Markov process with small number of samples.  相似文献

Oligochaeta, occurring in the littoral zones of two sand pits, were sampled in order to determine the relationship between the oligochaete species and the waters’ trophic level. Differences between sand pits attributable to community structure and to an overall higher abundance of oligochaetes, especially tubificids, were observed in Dzierżno Małe. Multivariate analyses (correspondence analysis [CA] and canonical correspondence analysis [CCA]) reveal correlations between the distribution patterns of oligochaete species and the concentration of nitrates, phosphates and dissolved oxygen. Some species, e.g. Dero digitata, Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, Potamothrix hammoniensis, Nais simplex, Limnodrilus claparedeanus, Limnodrilus udekemianus and Tubifex tubifex, were more abundant in eutrophic sites. The results of the study showed that the richness of Oligochaeta species is not a good method for estimating the trophic levels of the studied sand pits. Indicators based on the share of oligo-, meso- and eutrophic species in Oligochaeta communities are better for evaluating the water quality in the studied reservoirs.  相似文献

As a part of a project to compare phylogenetically the larval or embryonic development of all major taxa of the Branchiopoda (Crustacea), the larval development of the Japanese spinicaudatan clam shrimp Eulimnadia braueriana Ishikawa, 1895, is described. Seven naupliar stages are recognized, based mainly on significant morphological differences between them, but in one case, on size alone. The seven stages range in length from 156 µm to 760 µm. Nauplius 1 is nonfeeding with incompletely developed and nonfunctional feeding structures. Nauplius 2 has apparently functional feeding structures, including a well-developed mandibular gnathobase, setulate protopodal endites of the antennae, and setules on various setae involved in swimming and food manipulation. Nauplius 3 is morphologically identical to Nauplius 2, but more than 50% larger. In nauplius 4, the coxal endite (naupliar process) of the antennae develops a bifid tip. Nauplius 5 has a lateral pair of primordial carapace lobes, and the first 4–5 pairs of trunk limb buds are weakly developed, making the anterior part of the trunk wider than the posterior. In nauplius 6, five pairs of trunk limb buds are visible externally and a small carapace has appeared, reaching approximately to trunk limbs 2; also, the pair of large buds behind the mandibles in previous stages has become divided into a large, anterior, setose bud and two smaller, posterior buds. The identities of these structures as either paragnaths or maxillules/maxillae remain uncertain. In nauplius 7, about six pairs of trunk limb buds are visible externally. The general morphology of the nauplius larvae of E. braueriana is much like those of the well-known Limnadia lenticularis (Linnaeus, 1758) and Eulimnadia texana Packard, 1871, including an elongate, lanceolate labrum; however, because of various heterochronies, the correspondence between the larval sequences of these species is not perfect. There is even less correspondence with the 5-stage larval development reported for Limnadia stanleyana King, 1855, and the spatulate labra of that species and Jmnadia spp. are different from those of other known limnadiid nauplii. The larvae of E. braueriana possess many typical (and synapomorphic) branchiopod features, such as the general morphology of the appendages involved in feeding and the mode of trunk limb development, while the small buds of the first antennae and the exact number and development of the parts of the trunk limbs are typical for the Spinicaudata.  相似文献

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Both incidence and mortality of lung cancer are especially high in Hungary. Several investigations suggested recently that month of birth (MOB) is associated with the risks of several nonmalignant disorders as well as some malignant disorders. Only a few studies investigated previously the association between MOB and risk of lung cancer, but they provided inconsistent results. We, therefore, decided to investigate this issue in a large sample of individuals who died from lung cancer. Accordingly, we determined the MOB-associated risk of death by lung cancer between the years 1970 and 2009 among all individuals born in Hungary between 1925 and 1934. The final sample included about two million people. A total of 61,904 deaths by lung cancer occurred in this sample during the period investigated. Using analysis of variance (ANOVA), we did not find significant association between MOB and risk of lung cancer death, either in the whole population investigated (F?=?1.492; p?=?.145) or in the female subpopulation (F?=?1.535; p?=?.129). However, those males born in late spring (May–June) had a lower risk of lung cancer development (F?=?2.577; p?=?.006). Results of the Edwards test also did not suggest consistent association between MOB and risk of lung cancer death in the whole investigated period (1925–1934) in any populations (i.e., whole population or male and female subpopulations). In conclusion, we did not find significant association between MOB and risk of lung cancer in our total sample (although results alluded to a weak association between MOB and risk of lung cancer development among males). The possible associations between MOB and the risk of lung cancer development (or smoking) would require confirmation (or refutation) in large studies from other populations.
