Results are presented from the experimental studies and numerical simulations of the behavior of dust grains in the plasma of an inductive RF discharge. The experiments were carried out with neon at a pressure of 25–500 Pa and with 1.87-μm melamine formaldehyde grains. The discharge was excited by a ring inductor supplied from a generator operating at a 100-MHz frequency. The effective dust-grain interaction potential used in numerical simulations involved the spatial dependence of the grain charge on the plasma floating potential, grain-interaction anisotropy resulting from the focusing of the drift ion current by the negatively charged grains, and specific features of the shielding of the dust grains by the plasma electrons and ions recombining both in the plasma bulk and on the grain surface. The results of Monte Carlo simulations show that the dust grains form specific filament structures observed experimentally in the plasma of an inductive electrodeless discharge. __________ Translated from Fizika Plazmy, Vol. 26, No. 5, 2000, pp. 445–454. Results are presented from Monte Carlo calculations of the electric charge of dust grains in a plasma produced during the slowing down of the radioactive decay products of californium nuclei in neon. The dust grain charging is explained for the first time as being due to the drift of electrons and ions in an external electric field. It is shown that the charges of the grains depend on their coordinates and strongly fluctuate with time. The time-averaged grain charges agree with the experimental data obtained on ordered liquidlike dust structures in a nuclear-track plasma. The time-averaged dust grain charges are used to carry out computer modeling of the formation of dynamic vortex structures observed in experiments. Evidence is obtained of the fact that the electrostatic forces experienced by the dust grains are potential in character.  相似文献

The time characteristics of grain charging, namely, the relaxation time of the steady grain charge and the charge fluctuations of grains of different sizes, are computed from particle simulations. The results obtained are compared with some theoretical predictions (primarily those derived from the drift-diffusion model). The simulations are carried out for nonmoving and moving two-temperature argon plasmas.  相似文献

The possibility is studied of the formation of ordered dust-grain structures in a low-temperature thermal plasma consisting of electrons, ions, and micron-sized charged dust grains. The range of the required values of the coupling parameter Γ defining the degree to which the plasma is nonideal is calculated using the results of diagnostic measurements carried out in a plasma consisting of combustion products of propane in air with grains of different materials. The results obtained show that the most favorable conditions for the formation of strongly correlated grain structures (for both positively and negatively charged grains) take place at the maximum grain number density and a plasma temperature close to the minimum flame temperature (∼1600 K). In this case, the optimum grain radii lie in the range 4–10 μm and the maximum value of the parameter Γ is less than 200. Since the calculated values of Γ give an upper estimate, liquidlike ordered structures are most likely to form in a thermal plasma. Based on the results of the analysis, it is stated that an increase in the parameter Γ and, accordingly, the formation of plasma-crystal structures in a thermal plasma can only occur for positively charged grains. __________ Translated from Fizika Plazmy, Vol. 26, No. 7, 2000, pp. 626–632. The dynamics of dust ion-acoustic solitons is analyzed in a wide range of dusty plasma parameters. The cases of both a positive dust grain charge arising due to the photoelectric effect caused by intense electromagnetic radiation and a negative grain charge established in the absence of electromagnetic radiation are considered. The ranges of plasma parameters and Mach numbers in which ??conservative?? (nondissipative) solitons can exist are determined. It is shown that, in dusty plasma with negatively charged dust grains, both compression and rarefaction solitons can propagate, whereas in plasma with positively charged dust grains, only compression solitons can exist. The evolution of soliton-like compression and rarefaction perturbations is studied by numerically solving the hydrodynamic equations for ions and dust grains, as well as the equation for dust grain charging. The main dissipation mechanisms, such as grain charging, ion absorption by dust grains, momentum exchange between ions and dust grains, and ion-neutral collisions are taken into account. It is shown that the amplitudes of soliton-like compression and rarefaction perturbations decrease in the course of their evolution and their velocities (the Mach numbers) decrease monotonically in time. At any instant of time, the shape of an evolving soliton-like perturbation coincides with the shape of a conservative soliton corresponding to the current value of the Mach number. It is shown that, after the interaction between any types of soliton-like perturbations, their velocities and shapes are restored (with a certain phase shift) to those of the corresponding perturbations propagating without interaction; i.e., they are in fact weakly dissipative solitons.  相似文献

A theoretical model is presented that describes the charging of dust grains in the positive plasma column of a stratified glow dc discharge in argon. A one-dimensional self-consistent model is used to obtain axial profiles of the electric field, as well as the electron energy distribution function along the axis of the discharge tube. Radial profiles of the electric field are determined in the ambipolar diffusion approximation. It is assumed that, in the radial direction, the electron distribution function depends only on the total electron energy. Two-dimensional distributions of the discharge plasma parameters are calculated and used to determine the potential and charge of a test dust grain at a certain point within the discharge and the electrostatic forces acting on it. It is shown that the grain charge distribution depends strongly on the nonequilibrium electron distribution function and on the nonuniform distribution of the electric field in a stratified glow discharge. A discussion is presented on the suspension of dust grains, the separation of grains by size in the discharge striations, and a possible mechanism for the onset of vortex dust motion at the edge of a dust cloud.  相似文献

The effect of charged micron-size dust grains (microparticles) on the electric parameters of the positive column of a low-pressure dc glow discharge in neon has been studied experimentally and numerically. Numerical analysis is carried out in the diffusion-drift approximation with allowance for the interaction of dust grains with metastable neon atoms. In a discharge with a dust grain cloud, the longitudinal electric field increases. As the number density of dust grains in an axisymmetric cylindrical dust cloud rises, the growth of the electric field saturates. It is shown that the contribution of metastable atoms to ionization is higher in a discharge with dust grains, in spite of the quenching of metastable atoms on dust grains. The processes of charging of dust grains and the dust cloud are considered. As the number density of dust grains rises, their charge decreases, while the space charge of the dust cloud increases. The results obtained can be used in plasma technologies involving microparticles.  相似文献

A model of dust grain charging is constructed using the method of moments. The dust grain charging process in a weakly ionized helium plasma produced by a 100-keV electron beam at atmospheric pressure is studied theoretically. In simulations, the beam current density was varied from 1 to 106 μA/cm2. It is shown that, in a He plasma, dust grains of radius 5 μm and larger perturb the electron temperature only slightly, although the reduced electric field near the grain reaches 8 Td, the beam current density being 106 μA/cm2. It is found that, at distances from the grain that are up to several tens or hundreds of times larger than its radius, the electron and ion densities are lower than their equilibrium values. Conditions are determined under which the charging process may be described by a model with constant electron transport coefficients. The dust grain charge is shown to be weakly affected by secondary electron emission. In a beam-produced helium plasma, the dust grain potential calculated in the drift-diffusion model is shown to be close to that calculated in the orbit motion limited model. It is found that, in the vicinity of a body perturbing the plasma, there may be no quasineutral plasma presheath with an ambipolar diffusion of charged particles. The conditions for the onset of this presheath in a beam-produced plasma are determined. __________ Translated from Fizika Plazmy, Vol. 29, No. 3, 2003, pp. 214–226. The influence of the neutral component of the dusty ionospheric plasma on the process of dust grain charging is analyzed. Microscopic ion fluxes onto a dust grain are calculated with allowance for the interaction with the neutral components of the ionospheric plasma for both negatively and positively charged dust grains. For the latter case, which takes place in the presence of intense UV or X-ray solar radiation, the electron heating caused by the photoelectric effect is also investigated. It is found that the efficiency of electron heating depends on the density of neutral particles. The altitudes at which these effects appreciably influence the charging of different types of nano- and microscale dust grains are determined. It is shown that these effects should be taken into account in describing noctilucent clouds, polar mesosphere summer echoes, and physical phenomena involving grains of meteoric origin.  相似文献

Equations for the motion of an individual dust grain in the double layer of a negatively charged cylindrical probe in a glow discharge plasma are derived and solved numerically. The distribution of the electric potential near the probe is determined, and the grain charge is calculated as a function of the distance from the probe for different probe potentials. The trajectories of grains with different initial energies are traced. An analysis of the grain trajectories shows that, at a certain distance from the probe, high-energy grains may be recharged; i.e., the grain charge may change sign. The grains are found to have no direct effect on the probe current in a dusty plasma of a glow discharge.  相似文献

Plasma?dust effects in the martian atmosphere are discussed. A specific feature of the martian atmosphere is the presence of dust grains in a wide range of altitudes. Taking into account the presence of the martian ionosphere and the high conductivity of the medium at lower altitudes, the appearance of plasma systems in the martian atmosphere can be considered quite a common phenomenon. Special attention is paid to dust devils that frequently form in the martian atmosphere and can efficiently lift dust grains. The processes of dust grain charging as a result of triboelectric effect and generation of electric fields in a dust devil are discussed. The dynamics of dust grains in such a vortex is simulated with allowance for their charging and the generated electric field.  相似文献

The problem of the evolution of a perturbation in a dusty plasma and its transformation into a nonlinear wave structure is considered. A computational method that allows one to solve the set of nonlinear evolutionary equations describing variable-charge dust grains, Boltzmann electrons, and inertial ions is developed. Exact steady-state solutions corresponding to ion-acoustic shock structures associated with anomalous dissipation originating from dust grain charging are found taking into account the effect of electron and ion charge separation. The role of this effect increases with the speed of the shock. The evolutions of an initial soliton (which is a steady-state wave solution in a plasma containing dust grains with a constant charge) and an initially immobile perturbation with a constant increased ion density are investigated. In a charge-varying dusty plasma, the soliton evolves into a nonsteady shock wave structure that propagates at a constant speed and whose amplitude decreases with time. The initially immobile perturbation with a constant increased ion density evolves into a shock structure similar to a steady-state shock wave. In the latter case, the compression shock wave is accompanied by a rarefaction region (dilatation wave), which finally leads to the destruction of the shock structure. The solution of the problem of the evolution of a perturbation and its transformation into a shock wave in a charge-varying dusty plasma opens up the possibility of describing real phenomena (such as supernova explosions) and laboratory and active space experiments.  相似文献

The pulsed mode of a negative corona discharge in air has long been known; however, in electropositive gases, this mode has not been previously observed. This paper presents the results from a systematic study of a newly discovered pulsed mode of a negative corona in nitrogen over a wide range of experimental parameters. The conditions under which the pulsed mode is realized are described in detail. The dynamic characteristics of current pulses are determined. The shapes and parameters of current pulses in nitrogen and air are compared.  相似文献

The effect of microwave radiation on a complex plasma produced by an external ionizer is studied using numerical simulations. It is shown that, as the radiation intensity increases, the scattering of the incident radiation by charged metal grains is enhanced and radiation at the second harmonic of the incident radiation appears in the scattered spectrum. This effect is associated with the grain charge oscillations caused by the nonlinear action of the microwave field. It is found that, under the action of strong microwave radiation, the grain charge can increase by one order of magnitude. It is shown that, when the microwave intensity is high enough, the distribution of the electric field near a dust grain is shown to change so radically that the field component normal to the grain surface can even change its sign.  相似文献

The properties are studied of dusty plasma structures formed in a glow discharge in a dust trap above the lower wall of the side branch of the discharge tube, near the turn of the discharge channel. The dust structure is three-dimensional with a characteristic size of up to 3 cm and contains about 30000 dust grains. Depending on the experimental conditions, dust-acoustic, dissipative, and charge-gradient instabilities can develop in such a structure. When using highly polydisperse dust grains of arbitrary shape, the effect of selection of dust grains by the plasma with respect to their mean size and shape was discovered. This effect was studied quantitatively in two gases by using the method of gathering and extraction of the dust grains levitating in the trap. The morphology of the dust structures was determined from the pair correlation functions of the horizontal cross sections containing long-range order peaks and elements of a hexagonal lattice. Stratification of a uniform structure accompanied by convective rotation caused by the grain charge gradient was observed. Applications of the dusty plasma created in this type of device are discussed.  相似文献

The concentrations of adenine nucleotides were determined in germinating lettuce (Lactuca sativa) seeds after transitions from air to hypoxic or anoxic atmospheres. The ratio ATP/ADP and the energy charge were rapidly lowered after the transitions and remained stable at low values for hours. The energy charge in anoxia stabilized at a value close to 0.3. After 24 h in anoxia the energy charge rose rapidly to high values (0.9) when N2 was replaced by air. The metabolic properties of lettuce seeds had then been conversed for hours at low energy charge. In hypoxia the O2 uptake was decreased and the energy charge was stabilized at values intermediate between that in air and that in anoxia. When the O2 partial pressures (pO2) were 5 and 2kPa, the values of O2 uptake were one-third and one-sixth of that in air, and the energy charges were 0.7 and 0.5. These results show that the energy charge is regulated over a wide range of values. The ratio ATP/ADP and the energy charge are indicators of the limitation of metabolic activity by hypoxia.  相似文献

The results of investigations of dust grain behavior in plasma formed by a proton beam in inert gases (He, Ar, Kr) are demonstrated. Stable ordered dust structures, namely “a plasma-dust crystal” formed of dust grains 1.0, 3.0, and 4.8 μm in diameter are obtained in the proton beam range for the first time. The mathematical model which allows for numerical simulation of crystal formation from dust grains formed by proton beam plasma is developed.  相似文献

Results of the experimental studies of the dynamics of dust grains in the plasmas of an rf capacitive discharge and a dc glow discharge are presented. The dusty plasma of a dc glow discharge was investigated in both ground-based experiments and experiments carried out under microgravity conditions (on board the Mir space station). The pair correlation function, temperature, and diffusion coefficient of dust grains are measured in a wide range of the dusty-plasma parameters. Dimensionless parameters responsible for the microscopic transport of dust-grains in a gas-discharge plasma are determined. A nonintrusive diagnostic technique for determining the dust-grain charges and screening lengths under the assumption of screened interaction between the grains is proposed. This technique is used to estimate the surface potential of dust grains of different size in a gas-discharge plasma.  相似文献

The results from numerical simulation of the dust grain charging process in a weakly ionized gasdischarge plasma are analyzed. An empirical approximate formula for the ion current to the grain surface under conditions close to those in laboratory experiments with dusty plasmas is derived. Investigations show that the approximation proposed greatly simplifies determination of the grain charge by avoiding laborious calculations for different grain sizes and different parameters of the surrounding plasma.  相似文献

Charged particle transport and kinetic processes in a low-temperature dusty plasma are numerically simulated. Dust grains are represented as spheres with a given radius. The self-consistent electric field in the plasma surrounding a charged dust grain is calculated taking into account the perturbations of plasma quasineutrality near the grains. It is shown that applying an external electric field leads to a rearrangement of the plasma space charge and a break of the spherical symmetry of the electron and ion density distributions around the grain. The mutual influence of two identical charged dust grains is considered, and the energy of the electrostatic interaction between the grains is calculated. It is shown that this energy has a minimum at a certain finite distance between the grains.  相似文献
