In this paper, we present a new method for multi-scale analysis of electromyography signals based on an interesting fractal process known as multiplicative cascade multi-fractal. Using simulated needle electromyography signals, we show this method provides a means for discrimination of normal and neuropathic electromyography signals. We also present experimental results that show the new parameters, computed using multiplicative cascade multi-fractal modeling, are more robust than the conventional signal parameter, number of turns, in the presence of additive noise. Results of multiplicative cascade multi-fractal modeling are consistent with other multi-scale approaches; advantages and differences are high lighted.  相似文献

MOTIVATION: The importance of a systematic methodology for the mathematical characterization of three-dimensional gene expression patterns in embryonic development. METHODS: By combining lacunarity and multiscale fractal dimension analyses with computer-based methods of three-dimensional reconstruction, it becomes possible to extract new information from in situ hybridization studies. Lacunarity and fractality are appropriate measures for the cloud-like gene activation signals in embryonic tissues. The newly introduced multiscale method provides a natural extension of the fractal dimension concept, being capable of characterizing the fractality of geometrical patterns in terms of spatial scale. This tool can be systematically applied to three-dimensional patterns of gene expression. RESULTS: Applications are illustrated using the three-dimensional expression patterns of the myogenic marker gene Myf5 in a series of differentiating somites of a mouse embryo.  相似文献

Bacteria communicate using secreted chemical signaling molecules called autoinducers in a process known as quorum sensing. The quorum‐sensing network of the marine bacterium Vibrio harveyi uses three autoinducers, each known to encode distinct ecological information. Yet how cells integrate and interpret the information contained within these three autoinducer signals remains a mystery. Here, we develop a new framework for analyzing signal integration on the basis of information theory and use it to analyze quorum sensing in V. harveyi. We quantify how much the cells can learn about individual autoinducers and explain the experimentally observed input–output relation of the V. harveyi quorum‐sensing circuit. Our results suggest that the need to limit interference between input signals places strong constraints on the architecture of bacterial signal‐integration networks, and that bacteria probably have evolved active strategies for minimizing this interference. Here, we analyze two such strategies: manipulation of autoinducer production and feedback on receptor number ratios.  相似文献

This paper investigates the role of species interactions as a mechanism determining the changing seasonal abundance of microphytobenthic species. Different kinds of interactions can occur between microphytobenthic species, e.g., interference competition (a species directly hindering the growth of another) or resource competition. If such interactions are strong, the capacity of species to exploit parts of the seasonal spectrum of temperature and light conditions could be greatly affected. A model system of two freshwater benthic phototrophs, the cyanobacterium Leptolyngbya foveolarum (Rabenhorst ex Gomont) Anagnostidis et Komárek and the diatom Nitzschia perminuta (Grunow) M. Pergallo, was used to study the capacity of each species to grow in ranges of temperature (7, 15 and 25 °C) and light (5, 40 and 200 μmol m−2 s−1) conditions in single-species and two-species cultures. Growth was followed for 14–17 days by measuring chlorophyll a and maximum photosynthetic capacity using spectrophotometry and pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorimetry. A PHYTO-PAM fluorimeter facilitated simultaneous observations in mixed cultures on the two species. In mixed cultures, the diatom appeared to be a ‘cool season species’ (low temperature and low light intensity) and the cyanobacterium a ‘summer or autumn species’ (higher temperature and light intensities). This is different than predicted by monoculture experiments, where a wide range of optimal growth conditions was found. Two-species biofilm tests indicated inhibitory effects of the cyanobacterium on the diatom species, especially under conditions favorable to the cyanobacterium. High or low light intensities, increase of local pH caused by depletion of inorganic carbon, and limitation of other inorganic nutrients (resource competition) were examined as factors contributing to diatom inhibition, but none provided an acceptable explanation for observed growth patterns. This paper uses data of The Distribution Atlas of Polish Butterflies to simulate the effect of four different types of area loss (aggregated, fractal, random, and nested) on species diversity and species–area relationships (SARs). We found that power function and logarithmic SAR models overestimated species loss in the case of aggregated, fractal, and random patterns of area reduction. Instead, the modification of the power function by Plotkin et al. (Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 97 (2000b) 10850) (S=S0AzekA) with k being a shape-adjusting parameter worked better and gave sufficient predictions of species loss. The net effects of the aggregated, fractal, and random types of area loss on species diversity were very similar with an aggregated pattern of area loss leading to slightly higher rates of species loss than both other processes. We conclude that SARs might be useful tools for biodiversity forecasting if they are constructed in a case-specific manner. The use of standard models instead might be misleading.  相似文献

Mapping nucleotide sequences onto a "DNA walk" produces a novel representation of DNA that can then be studied quantitatively using techniques derived from fractal landscape analysis. We used this method to analyze 11 complete genomic and cDNA myosin heavy chain (MHC) sequences belonging to 8 different species. Our analysis suggests an increase in fractal complexity for MHC genes with evolution with vertebrate > invertebrate > yeast. The increase in complexity is measured by the presence of long-range power-law correlations, which are quantified by the scaling exponent alpha. We develop a simple iterative model, based on known properties of polymeric sequences, that generates long-range nucleotide correlations from an initially noncorrelated coding region. This new model-as well as the DNA walk analysis-both support the intron-late theory of gene evolution.  相似文献

The application of the theory of chaotic dynamical systems has gradually evolved from computer simulations to assessment of erratic behavior of physical, chemical, and biological systems. Whereas physical and chemical systems lend themselves to fairly good experimental control, biologic systems, because of their inherent complexity, are limited in this respect. This has not, however, prevented a number of investigators from attempting to understand many biologic periodicities. This has been especially true regarding cardiac dynamics: the spontaneous beating of coupled and non-coupled cardiac pacemakers provides a convenient comparison to the dynamics of oscillating systems of the physical sciences. One potentially important hypothesis regarding cardiac dynamics put forth by Goldberger and colleagues, is that normal heart beat fluctuations are chaotic, and are characterized by a 1/f-like power spectrum. To evaluate these conjectures, we studied the heart beat intervals (R wave toR wave of the electocardiogram) of isolated, perfused rat hearts and their response to a variety of external perturbations. The results indicate bifurcations between complex patterns, states with positive dynamical entropies, and low values of fractal dimensions frequently seen in physical, chemical and cellular systems, as well as power law scaling of the spectrum. Additionally, these dynamics can be modeled by a simple, discrete map, which has been used to describe the dynamics of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction.  相似文献

 Neurons of the rat spinal cord were stained using the Golgi impregnation method. Successfully impregnated neurons from laminae II, III, and VI were subjected to fractal and nonfractal analyses. Fractal analysis was performed using length-related techniques. Since an application of fractal methods to the analysis of dendrite arbor structures requires caution, we adopted as appropriate a nonfractal method proposing a generalized power-law model with two main nonfractal parameters: (i) the anfractuosity, characterizing the degree of dendritic deviation from straight lines; and (ii) an estimate of the total length of arbor dendrites. The anfractuosity can distinguish between two sets of drawings where the fractal methods failed. We also redefine some basic concepts of fractal geometry, present the ruler-counting method, and propose a new definition of fractal dimension. 以浙江省天目山国家级自然保护区为例,采用多尺度分析思想,利用多重分形分析方法,研究了不同尺度下物种多样性的变化、空间分布格局以及多样性与空间格局之间的关系。研究主要得到3方面的结论:(1)物种多样性具有尺度依赖性,随着空间尺度的增大,Shannon-Wiener多样性指数Ⅳ增大,Margalef多样性指数足和均匀度指数E减小;(2)多重分形参数αmin。多重分形谱的变化范围SR等能够定量反映物种的空间分布特征,空间大尺度越大,物种越聚集,空间分布越不均匀;(3)物种多样性与空间格局存在线性或幂函数关系。研究表明多重分形分析定量描述物种空间格局是有效性的,多重分形参数与生物多样性之间的定量关系为研究物种空间格局、生态属性与尺度之间的关系奠定了基础。因此,分形结合传统方法,在生物多样性方面的研究将有很大的潜在价值。  相似文献

Small-angle neutron scattering experiments have been made on solutions of humic acid aggregates with an acidity corresponding to pH 5.0 and at 0.1 M ionic strength. We observe power-law decay of the intensity over one decade of the scattering vector, Q, indicating that the aggregates are fractal. We explain the normalized intensity in the entire Q-range by assuming that the humic acid particles can be described by building units of a radial size, 25 Å, aggregated into clusters with an average radius of 400–500 Å. For humic acids obtained from two different sources, we determine the fractal dimension, D = 2.3 ± 0.1. For small values of Q, the measured data of one of the samples extend into the Guinier range giving an average radius of gyration of 320 ± 20 Å. Correspondence to: R. Österberg  相似文献

A simple practical method exists for classifying and comparing planar curves composed of connected line segments. This method assigns, a single numberD, the fractal dimension, to each curve.D=log(n)/[log(n)+log(d/L)], where:n is the number of line segments,L is the total length of the line segments, andd is the planar diameter of the curve (the greatest distance between any two endpoints). At one end of the spectrum, for straight line curves,D=1; at the other end of the spectrum, for random walk curves,D→2. Standard statistics are done on the logarithms of the fractal dimension [log(D)]. With this measure, trails of biological movement, such as the growth paths of the cells and the paths of wandering organisms, can be analyzed to determine the likelihood that these trails are random walks and also to compare the straightness of the trails before and after experimental interventions.  相似文献

Coordinated or ‘field’ behaviour of cells of a tissue can be treated as an interaction between signals and a responding system. When the response involves the reaction of similar cells to a gradient, the field properties are thought to reside mainly in the signal. It is not generally recognized that initially uniform properties in the responding tissue can contribute to the specification of geometrical detail. One such feature is that a tissue may have an intrinsic wavelength, e.g. for the diameter of a new-forming organ. Another is tensor properties. Gram-negative bacteria communicate with each other by producing and sensing diffusible signaling molecules. This mechanism is called quorum sensing (QS) and regulates many bacterial activities from gene expression to symbiotic/pathogenic interactions with hosts. Therefore, the elucidation and control of bacterial QS systems have been attracted increasing attention over the past two decades. The most common QS signals in Gram-negative bacteria are N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs). There are also bacteria that employ different QS systems, for example, the plant pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum utilizes 3-hydroxy fatty acid methyl esters as its QS signals. The QS system found in the endosymbiotic bacterium associated with the fungus Mortierella alpina, the development of an affinity pull-down method for AHL synthases, and the elucidation of a unique QS circuit in R. solanacearum are discussed herein.  相似文献

This study presents an integrated assessment approach for the sustainable development of agricultural landscapes. The approach evaluates single agricultural production practices by means of environmental, economic and social indicators. To implement the approach, a mixed method was employed that combines modelling techniques and survey methods. The economic and environmental indicators were implemented within the bio-economic modelling system MODAM (Multi-Objective Decision support system for Agro-ecosystem Management) in order to assess economic performance and the effects on the abiotic and biotic environments. The modelling approach was applied to a case study in a region of north-eastern Germany, within the state of Brandenburg. In addition, the acceptance by farmers of different production alternatives that are known to have environmental benefits was examined in the case study. To allow for a direct comparison between different indicators, the results of the assessment are dimensionless index values that indicate the suitability of certain agricultural production practices with respect to an indicator. The indicator-related indices are then aggregated into an overall index of sustainability differentiating between ‘strong’ and ‘weak’ sustainability. Results are presented for exemplarily chosen production practices for sugar beet, potato and winter rape production and set aside. Depending on the underlying concept of sustainability (‘weak’ vs. ‘strong’), different production practices were identified as the most suitable ones in a given situation. This integrated assessment enables determination of positive and negative correlations between indicators. The approach allows for the identification of production alternatives that are assessed to be economically and environmentally beneficial as well as socially accepted, although at different levels.  相似文献

Deposits on surfaces in water-bearing systems, also known as ‘fouling’, can lead to substantial losses in the performance of industrial processes as well as a decreased product quality. Early detection and localization of such deposits can, to a considerable extent, save such losses. However, most of the surfaces that become fouled, for example, in process water pipes, membrane systems, power plants, and food and beverage industries, are difficult to access and analyses conducted on the water phase do not reveal the site or extent of deposits. Furthermore, it is of interest to distinguish biological from non-biological deposits. Although they usually occur together, different countermeasures are necessary. Therefore, sensors are required that indicate the development of surface fouling in real-time, non-destructively, and in situ, preferably allowing for discrimination between chemical and/or biological deposits. In this paper, an optical deposit sensor is presented which fulfills these requirements. Based on multiple fluorescence excitation emission matrix analysis, it detects autofluorescence of amino acids as indicators of biomass. Autofluorescence of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide?+?hydrogen is interpreted as an indicator of biological activity, thus it acts as a viability marker, making the method suited for assessing the efficacy of disinfection treatments. Scattering signals from abiotic deposits such as calcium carbonate or corrosion products can clearly be distinguished from biotic substances and monitored separately. The sensor provides an early warning of fouling, allowing for timely countermeasures to be deployed. It also provides an assessment of the success of cleaning treatments and is a promising tool for integrated antifouling strategies.  相似文献

Purpose

To investigate the relationship between displacement of pelvic floor landmarks observed with transperineal ultrasound imaging and electromyography of the muscles hypothesised to cause the displacements.

Materials and Methods

Three healthy men participated in this study, which included ultrasound imaging of the mid-urethra, urethra-vesical junction, ano-rectal junction and bulb of the penis. Fine-wire electromyography electrodes were inserted into the puborectalis and bulbocavernosus muscles and a transurethral catheter electrode recorded striated urethral sphincter electromyography. A nasogastric sensor recorded intra-abdominal pressure. Tasks included submaximal and maximal voluntary contractions, and Valsalva. The relationship between each of the parameters measured from ultrasound images and electromyography or intra-abdominal pressure amplitudes was described with nonlinear regression.

Results

Strong, non-linear relationships were calculated for each predicted landmark/muscle pair for submaximal contractions (R2–0.87–0.95). The relationships between mid-urethral displacement and striated urethral sphincter electromyography, and bulb of the penis displacement and bulbocavernosus electromyography were strong during maximal contractions (R2–0.74–0.88). Increased intra-abdominal pressure prevented shortening of puborectalis, which resulted in weak relationships between electromyography and anorectal and urethravesical junction displacement during all tasks.

Conclusions

Displacement of landmarks in transperineal ultrasound imaging provides meaningful measures of activation of individual pelvic floor muscles in men during voluntary contractions. This method may aid assessment of muscle function or feedback for training.  相似文献

目的:本文以设计的表面肌电(sEMG)信号采集系统为基础,探讨sEMG信号中的降噪处理问题。方法:结合sEMG信号的噪声影响情况,首先利用带通滤波器消除肌电信号频带外噪声,再通过频谱插值法来抑制工频干扰分量,最后使用小波分析方法来削弱肌电信号频带内噪声。结果:通过对检测sEMG信号的降噪处理,信号噪声得到明显抑制。结论:所设计采集系统能够获得满意的sEMG信号检测效果,所采用降噪方法能够有效提高sEMG信号的质量。  相似文献

The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum from the [4Fe–4S]3+ cluster in several high-potential iron–sulfur proteins (HiPIPs) is complex: it is not the pattern of a single, isolated S=1/2 system. Multifrequency EPR from 9 to 130 GHz reveals that the apparent peak positions (g values) are frequency-independent: the spectrum is dominated by the Zeeman interaction plus g-strain broadening. The spectra taken at frequencies above the X-band are increasingly sensitive to rapid-passage effects; therefore, the X-band data, which are slightly additionally broadened by dipolar interaction, were used for quantitative spectral analysis. For a single geometrical [4Fe–4S]3+ structure the (Fe–Fe)5+ mixed-valence dimer can be assigned in six different ways to a pair of iron ions, and this defines six valence isomers. Systematic multicomponent g-strain simulation shows that the [4Fe–4S]3+ paramagnets in seven HiPIPs from different bacteria each consist of three to four discernible species, and these are assigned to valence isomers of the clusters. This interpretation builds on previous EPR analyzes of [4Fe–4S]3+ model compounds, and it constitutes a high-resolution extension of the current literature model, proposed from paramagnetic NMR studies.  相似文献

The statistical properties of the spontaneous background electrocorticogram (ECoG) were modeled, starting with random numbers, constraining the distributions, and identifying characteristic deviations from randomness in ECoG from subjects at rest and during intentional behaviors. The ECoG had been recorded through 8 × 8 arrays of 64 electrodes, from the surfaces of auditory, visual, or somatic cortices of 9 rabbits, and from the inferotemporal cortex of a human subject. Power spectral densities (PSD) in coordinates of log10 power versus log10 frequency of ECoG from subjects at rest usually conformed to noise in power-law distributions in a continuum. PSD of ECoG from active subjects usually deviated from noise in having peaks in log10 power above the power-law line in various frequency bands. The analytic signals from the Hilbert transform after band pass filtering in the beta and gamma ranges revealed beats from interference among distributed frequencies in band pass filtered noise called Rayleigh noise. The beats were displayed as repetitive down spikes in log10 analytic power. Repetition rates were proportional to filter bandwidths for all center frequencies. Resting ECoG often gave histograms of the magnitudes and intervals of down spikes that conformed to noise. Histograms from active ECoG often deviated from noise in Rayleigh distributions of down spike intervals by giving what are called Rice (Mathematical analysis of random noise—and appendixes—technical publications monograph B-1589. Bell Telephone Labs Inc., New York, 1950) distributions. Adding power to noise as signals at single frequencies simulated those deviations. The beats in dynamic theory are deemed essential for perception, by gating beta and gamma bursts at theta rates through enhancement of the cortical signal-to-noise ratio in exceptionally deep down spikes called null spikes.  相似文献
