The zooplankton composition is studied in the thermokarst, glacial and meteorite lakes, channels, former riverbeds, and hollows in the basin of Anadyr’. We found 174 taxa: 78, Rotatoria, 55, Cladocera, and 41, Copepoda. The most diverse is the lake fauna: 51 taxa of Rotatoria, 48, Cladocera, and 37, Copepoda. The thermokarst Lake Maiorskoe hosts 68 taxa: 31, Rotatoria, 14, Cladocera, and 23, Copepoda, wheras the cold ultraoligotrophic Lake El’gygytgyn features only one species of Cyclop of the group scutifer Cyclops neymanae Strel., and Rotatoria and Cladocera are present as allochtonous forms. The Copepoda illustrate the relations of the Anadyr’ fauna with those of Europe, North America, and Japan.  相似文献

Pelagic, littoral, and terrestrial resources can all play a role in supporting consumers in lakes. The role of benthic algal-derived food web pathways in lakes is perhaps the least understood because limnologists have historically focused on pelagic (open-water) production and processes. We compiled carbon stable isotope data from 546 fish populations (75 lakes), and used a two end-member mixing model to calculate littoral–benthic reliance for each fish species in each lake. Fish littoral–benthic reliance values were averaged by lake to assess overall fish species benthic reliance for each lake. Lake-specific mean littoral reliance (BRL; fish species not weighted according to production or biomass) averaged 57% and was independent of lake morphological and limnological attributes. For these same lakes, water column nutrients, light, and morphometry data were used to estimate whole-lake benthic algal and phytoplankton primary production. On average, benthic algae comprised 36% of whole-lake primary production (BPf = 0.36). BPf and BRL were weakly correlated: BRL tends to be high even in large/deep lakes in which benthic algae is a minor contributor to whole-lake primary production. The high littoral–benthic contribution to individual fish species appears to reflect the high concentration of fish species diversity in the littoral zone. Our work cannot be extrapolated to whole-lake fish production. However, the result is consistent with other work indicating that most fish species inhabit the littoral zone, whereas relatively few exclusively inhabit the pelagic. Our results suggest that it takes less primary production to support a single fish species in the littoral zone than is required to support a species in the pelagic.  相似文献

Background

Chronic pain is recognized as a public health problem that affects the general population physically, psychologically, and socially. However, there is little knowledge about the associated factors of chronic pain, such as the influence of weather, family structure, daily exercise, and work status.

Objectives

This survey had three aims: 1) to estimate the prevalence of chronic pain in Japan, 2) to analyze these associated factors, and 3) to evaluate the social burden due to chronic pain.

Methods

We conducted a cross-sectional postal survey in a sample of 6000 adults aged ≥20 years. The response rate was 43.8%.

Results

The mean age of the respondents was 57.7 years (range 20–99 years); 39.3% met the criteria for chronic pain (lasting ≥3 months). Approximately a quarter of the respondents reported that their chronic pain was adversely influenced by bad weather and also oncoming bad weather. Risk factors for chronic pain, as determined by a logistic regression model, included being an older female, being unemployed, living alone, and no daily exercise. Individuals with chronic pain showed significantly lower quality of life and significantly higher psychological distress scores than those without chronic pain. The mean annual duration of absence from work of working-age respondents was 9.6 days (range 1–365 days).

Conclusions

Our findings revealed that high prevalence and severity of chronic pain, associated factors, and significant impact on quality of life in the adult Japanese population. A detailed understanding of factors associated with chronic pain is essential for establishing a management strategy for primary care.  相似文献

During the last glaciation, the Rhone glacier extended as far as the region of Lyon and covered Lakes Bourget, Annecy and Léman. Glacial retreat successively freed Lakes Bourget and Annecy, it reached Geneva around 14 000 B.P. and the head of Lake Léman at about 12 000 B.P. Deposits situated between Nyon and the foot of the Jura provide a complete palynological zonation and serve as a type section for the lake core studies. A palynological horizon (about 1 800 A.D.) has been found in Lake Bourget and wood has been dated at 3 230 ± 65 B.P. (14C) in a core from Lake Léman. Three 6 m cores from each lake were sampled together with many 0.5 m cores from Léman. The short Lake Léman cores have been dated by137Cs and provide a precise indication of changes in the basin during recent decades. Holocene climatic variations are evident in the Léman cores and are reflected by concentrations of carbonate and organic carbon which increase at the end of the Alleröd and reach a maximum in the Atlantic Period (climatic optimum). Human settlement on the shores of Lake Annecy is shown by increases in heavy metals; increased sedimentation rates suggest settlement at the beginning of the Christian era. All the cores show increases in the organic matter and nutrients; from the turn of the century in the Léman, and later for the other lakes where eutrophication started only a few decades ago. NAI-P shows a very recent increase, around 1965 in the Leman. Heavy metals (Hg, Cd and Pb) show increases at about 30 years ago in Annecy, at about the turn of the century in Lake Léman and in the mid-19th century in Lake Bourget.

Résumé Lors de la dernière glaciation, le glacier du Rhône a atteint la région de Lyon et recouvert les lacs du Bourget, d'Annecy et le Léman. Son retrait a successivement libéré les lacs du Bourget, d'Annecy, puis le Léman de leur carapace de glace. Aux environs de 14 000 ans B.P. son front se trouvait au voisinage de Genéve, puis vers 12 000 B.P. à l'embouchure du Rhône en amont du Léman.La chronostratigraphie des grandes carottes (6 m) prélevées dans les trois lacs a été établie par la palynologie, sur la base des zonations obtenues dans un profil complet provenant d'un marais situé entre Nyon et le pied du Jura. Elles ont pu être contrôlées par un marqueur palynologique dans le lac du Bourget (150 B.P.) et la datation au 14C d'un fragment de bois dans le Léman (3 230 ± 65 B.P.). Une série de carottes de grand diamètre provenant de ce dernier lac, datés par le 137Cs, ont donné une image très précise du l'évolution du milieu durant les dernières décades. D'une facon générale, toutes les carottes montrent une augmentation des teneurs en matière organique, puis en nutrients, vers le fin du 19ème siècle pour le Léman et quelques dizaines d'années plus tard pour les lacs du Bourget et d'Annecy. Le début du l'etrophisation se situe beaucoup plus tard dans le Lémen avec l'accroissement des teneurs en phosphore, principalement de ses formes NAI-P et O-P, soit aux environs de 1965.

Human management of livestock and the presence of different breeds have been discussed in archaeozoology and animal breeding. Traditionally osteometrics has been the main tool in addressing these questions. We combine osteometrics with molecular sex identifications of 104 of 340 morphometrically analysed bones in order to investigate the use of cattle at the Eketorp ringfort on the ?land island in Sweden. The fort is dated to 300-1220/50 A.D., revealing three different building phases. In order to investigate specific patterns and shifts through time in the use of cattle the genetic data is evaluated in relation to osteometric patterns and occurrence of pathologies on cattle metapodia. Males were genotyped for a Y-chromosomal SNP in UTY19 that separates the two major haplogroups, Y1 and Y2, in taurine cattle. A subset of the samples were also genotyped for one SNP involved in coat coloration (MC1R), one SNP putatively involved in resistance to cattle plague (TLR4), and one SNP in intron 5 of the IGF-1 gene that has been associated to size and reproduction.The results of the molecular analyses confirm that the skeletal assemblage from Eketorp is dominated by skeletal elements from females, which implies that dairying was important. Pathological lesions on the metapodia were classified into two groups; those associated with the use as draught animals and those lesions without a similar aetiology. The results show that while bulls both exhibit draught related lesions and other types of lesions, cows exhibit other types of lesions. Interestingly, a few elements from females exhibit draught related lesions. We conclude that this reflects the different use of adult female and male cattle.Although we note some variation in the use of cattle at Eketorp between Iron Age and Medieval time we have found little evidence for the use of different types of animals for specific purposes. The use of specific (genetic) breeds seems to be a phenomenon that developed later than the Eketorp settlement.  相似文献

To investigate the expression of TNF-α, IFN-γ, TGF-β, and IL-4 in the spinal tuberculous focus and its relationship with the lesions type, severity, and bone destruction. The pathological samples of patients with spinal tuberculosis (TB) were divided into hyperplasia group and necrosis group according to their intra-operative and post-operative pathological findings. Normal bone tissues were taken as the control group. Pathology and expression of TNF-α, IFN-γ, TGF-β, and IL-4 in different tissues were compared among these three groups using immunohistochemical staining, quantitative image analysis, and measurement of bone tissue. 286 granulomas observed in the 14 samples in the hyperplasia group, which included 84 necrotizing and 202 non-necrotizing granulomas. As for the 20 samples in the necrosis group, there were 356 necrotizing and 186 non-necrotizing granulomas among all the 542 granulomas. The proportion of necrotizing granulomas in the necrosis group was significantly higher than that of the hyperplasia group. By inter-group comparison, expression of TNF-α, IFN-γ of granulomas in the hyperplasia group was significantly higher than that of the necrosis group, while the expression of TGF-β, IL-4 of granulomas in the necrosis group was significantly higher than that of the hyperplasia group. Also, expression of IFN-γ of non-necrotizing granulomas was significantly higher than that of necrotizing granulomas in the hyperplasia group, and expression of TGF-β in necrotizing granulomas was significantly higher than that of non-necrotizing granulomas in the necrosis group. The lesions were mainly bone resorption in the hyperplasia group, whereas mostly necrotic bones accompanied by local fibrosis in the necrosis group. Expression levels of TNF-α, IFN-γ in the hyperplasia group have a positive correlation to bone loss, whereas expression levels of TGF-β, IL-4 in the necrosis group have a positive correlation to the bone formation. The high expressions of TNF-α, IFN-γ in the spinal tuberculous focus were associated with protective immune cells. TGF-β and IL-4 were related to allergic lesions, fibrosis and osteogenesis. Expression imbalance of TNF-α, IFN-γ, TGF-β, and IL-4 might aggravate the allergy of TB.  相似文献

Management of plant resources is a complex process that involves the interaction of numerous cultural, environmental, economic, and ecological factors Therefore, understanding factors influencing management decisions requires multidisciplinary approaches, including both quantitative and qualitative perspectives. This study explores quantitative approaches as methodological tools with which to identify patterns underlying more intensive management of plant resources. The research was conducted in the village of Santa María Tecomavaca, Oaxaca, in south-central México, within the semiarid Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve. Three models explaining the management intensity tendencies were identified, consistent with the pattern of multiple variables influencing plant management.  相似文献

Recombinant human α-galactosidase A (rhαGal) is a homodimeric glycoprotein deficient in Fabry disease, a lysosomal storage disorder. In this study, each cysteine residue in rhαGal was replaced with serine to understand the role each cysteine plays in the enzyme structure, function, and stability. Conditioned media from transfected HEK293 cells were assayed for rhαGal expression and enzymatic activity. Activity was only detected in the wild type control and in mutants substituting the free cysteine residues (C90S, C174S, and the C90S/C174S). Cysteine-to-serine substitutions at the other sites lead to the loss of expression and/or activity, consistent with their involvement in the disulfide bonds found in the crystal structure. Purification and further characterization confirmed that the C90S, C174S, and the C90S/C174S mutants are enzymatically active, structurally intact and thermodynamically stable as measured by circular dichroism and thermal denaturation. The purified inactive C142S mutant appeared to have lost part of its alpha-helix secondary structure and had a lower apparent melting temperature. Saturation mutagenesis study on Cys90 and Cys174 resulted in partial loss of activity for Cys174 mutants but multiple mutants at Cys90 with up to 87% higher enzymatic activity (C90T) compared to wild type, suggesting that the two free cysteines play differential roles and that the activity of the enzyme can be modulated by side chain interactions of the free Cys residues. These results enhanced our understanding of rhαGal structure and function, particularly the critical roles that cysteines play in structure, stability, and enzymatic activity.  相似文献

The Gammaproteobacteria are widely and abundantly distributed in various environments, and they play important roles in the geochemical cycles of biogenic elements (e.g., C, N and S) in the ecosystems. Previous studies showed that Gammaproteobacteria dominate in saline and hypersaline lakes. However, little is known on how salinity influences gammaproteobacterial community composition and their ecological functions (i.e., organic carbon degradation). In this study, we investigated the gammaproteobacterial diversity and carbon utilization and their response to salinity in six saline/hypersaline lakes and one freshwater lake on the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP). The results indicated that the gammaproteobacterial community composition was mainly influenced by the salinity of the studied QTP lakes. Salinity was also a key environmental factor influencing the carbon utilization ability of Gammaproteobacteria: within one genus (e.g., Halomonas, Pseudoalteromonas, Vibrio) the strains retrieved from low-salinity environments had stronger carbon utilization ability than their counterparts from high-salinity environments; within one genus, the strains isolated from lakes with different salinity shared similar carbon utilization preference, indicating that species belonging to the same genus may execute similar ecological functions in the environments regardless of salinity.  相似文献

The microtubule cytoskeleton is assembled from a finite pool of α,β-tubulin, the size of which is controlled by an autoregulation mechanism. Cells also tightly regulate the architecture and dynamic behavior of microtubule arrays. Here, we discuss progress in our understanding of how tubulin autoregulation is achieved and highlight work showing that tubulin, in its unassembled state, is relevant for regulating the formation and organization of microtubules. Emerging evidence suggests that tubulin regulates microtubule-associated proteins and kinesin motors that are critical for microtubule nucleation, dynamics, and function. These relationships create feedback loops that connect the tubulin assembly cycle to the organization and dynamics of microtubule networks. We term this concept the ‘tubulin economy’, which emphasizes the idea that tubulin is a resource that can be deployed for the immediate purpose of creating polymers, or alternatively as a signaling molecule that has more far-reaching consequences for the organization of microtubule arrays.  相似文献

The benefits of using white clover in pastures have been widely recognised for many years. However, clover is perceived as being unreliable because of its typically low content, which is spatially and temporally variable, in mixed pastures. One proposed solution to increase the proportion of clover in the diet of grazing animals and composition in the pasture is to spatially separate clover from grass within the same field. In a field experiment ryegrass and white clover were grown in fine mixtures, and in pure alternating strips of ryegrass and clover of 1.5 m, 3 m or 18 m width within a field. Pastures were grazed for two grazing periods of 9 and 12 weeks, and measurements of sward surface height (SSH), herbage mass and composition and clover morphology were taken. Grazing behaviour was also observed. Results showed that spatial separation in the long term, when compared with a fine mixture, increased clover availability (18% to 30% v. 9%, based on standing dry matter) and was not grazed to extinction. Ewes maintained their preference for clover throughout the experiment (selection coefficient 2 to 5), which resulted in a reduction in the SSH of clover in monocultures to <3 cm and significant changes to the morphology of clover (smaller leaves, shorter petioles and thicker stolon), at the expense of maximising their intake. Spatial separation in the short term may therefore allow grazing animals to select their preferred diet; however, in the long term in continuously grazed pasture, their preference for clover depletes its availability.  相似文献

It is well known that estrogenic compounds affect development of fertilized eggs of many species of birds, fish and amphibians through disrupted activity of carbonic anhydrase (CA). The most potent activity comes from the most commonly occurring synthetic sterol, 17α-Ethynylestradiol (EE2). Less is known about the responses of aquatic phytoplankton to these compounds. Here we show for the first time that, in comparision to the control, the addition of 7 µM EE2 reduced the growth rate of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii by 68% for cells grown at high CO2. When cells were grown in ambient air (low Ci) with a fully activated carbon concentrating mechanism through the induction of CA activity, the growth rates were reduced by as much as 119%. A reduced growth rate could be observed at EE2 concentrations as low as 10 pM. This was accompanied by a reduced maximum capacity for electron transport in photosystem II as determined by a lower FV/FM for low Ci-grown cells, which indicates the involvement of CAH3, a CA specifically located in the thylakoid lumen involved in proton pumping across the thylakoid membranes. These results were in agreement with an observed reduction in the chloroplastic affinity for Ci as shown by a strong increase in the Michaelis-Menten K0.5 for HCO3 . In itself, a lowering of the growth rate of a green alga by addition of the sterol EE2 warrants further investigation into the potential environmental impact by the release of treated waste water.  相似文献

Effects of Schisandrin B (Sch B) and -tocopherol (-TOC) on ferric chloride (Fe3+) induced oxidation of erythrocyte membrane lipids in vitro and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced lipid peroxidation in vivo were examined. While -TOC could produce prooxidant and antioxidant effect on Fe3+-induced lipid peroxidation, Sch B only inhibited the peroxidation reaction. Pretreatment with -TOC (3 mmol/kg/day × 3) did not protect against CCl4-induced lipid peroxidation and hepatocellular damage in mice, whereas Sch B pretreatment (0.3 mmol/3.0 mmol/kg/day × 3) produced a dose-dependent protective effect on the CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity. This article presents the results of a comprehensive geochronological study of gyttja deposits from a section of a terrace above a floodplain located on the right bank of the Ob River near the town of Kolpashevo. According to the 230Th/U dating, the age of the gyttja could be dated in the range of 110–95 kyr. The results of spore–pollen analysis suggest that the gyttja deposit was formed in the period of a wide distribution of middle taiga forest landscapes with the dominance of spruce; the climatic conditions were similar to modern ones. These events probably took place in the interstadial time during MIS-5c or at the end of Kazantsevo interglacial period.  相似文献

Summary Female freshwater eels injected with estradiol-17 (E2) for 15–78 days appear paler and secrete more mucus than controls. The resulting strongly opalescent blood plasma indicates that vitellogenin synthesis occurs in the liver, which shows a significant hypertrophy, an increased vacuolization (lipid material) and glycogen depletion. Plasma sodium is lowered, but calcium levels are considerably increased. The gonosomatic index increases (0.92±0.1 to a maximum of 2.21). Oocytes are enlarged, but the incorporation of vitellogenin remains discrete. Gonadotrophs (GTH cells), small and scarcely visible in the pituitary of control eels, are hypertrophied and contain numerous glycoprotein granules after E2-administration. E2 may act on the pituitary and/or hypothalamus via a positive feedback to induce gonadotrophin (GTH) synthesis; GTH release seems to be very limited as indicated by the ovarian response. The differentiation of GTH cells in eels treated with fish pituitary extracts is most probably due to secretion of E2 by the ovary, which reacts on the pituitary. Various hypotheses are considered to explain the low GTH release.Thyrotrophs, somatotrophs and prolactin cells of the pituitary are stimulated. In the pars intermedia, MSH and PAS-positive cells appear less active. A possible antidopaminergic effect of E2 is discussed.E2 administration constitutes a simple and economic technique to induce the synthesis of GTH and will facilitate the biochemical and biological study of the latter hormone in eels.  相似文献

Abstract

The prevalence of cigarette smoking in the United States has declined over the past few decades. However, some leveling‐off in prevalence rates has been observed in recent years, and the rate for teenagers and young adults has even turned upward. This paper considers four alternative scenarios of future cigarette smoking patterns in the United States for the population 25 and over and measures the impact these different scenarios would have on excess mortality due to smoking and on the sex and age distributions of deaths. Scenarios reflecting higher levels of smoking prevalence produce considerably more deaths than scenarios tied to lower levels. As many as two and one‐half million excess deaths would take place in the decade of the 2020's if a high prevalence, rather than low prevalence, assumption proves correct. Even when a constant prevalence, assumption proves correct. Even when a constant prevalence assumption is compared with a moderately‐declining prevalence assumption, as many as one million excess deaths would be generated during that decade alone. Lowering smoking prevalence rates would also change the population sex ratio by reducing deaths for males more than deaths for females, and by contributing to the aging of the population. The results are interpreted in terms of the overall impact of smoking on mortality and with regard to public and private policy decisions related to cigarette smoking.  相似文献
