Leaves of debranched Japanese mint (Mentha arvensis L., subsp.haplocalyx Briquet var. piperascens Holmes) were marked to allowsubsequent identification for age. Leaves of different age groupswere distilled for determination of quantity and quality ofoil. Most of the oil and its principal component, menthol, weresynthesized during the first 2 weeks of growth, while menthoneand the a-pinene percentage composition of the oil declinedwith age after 2 weeks. A significant decrease in percentageoil content occurred in older leaves indicating that leaf lossthrough senescence caused less loss of oil than of dry matter.Proportion of young to old leaves had a significant effect onoil composition. This is believed to be the first report onoil composition of leaves from single plants of Japanese mint.  相似文献

Plants of Japanese mint (Mentha arvensis L. subsp. haplocalyxBriquet var. piperascens Holmes) were grown under 100, 64, 49and 28% conditions of prevailing radiation for 10 weeks, withharvests at 4, 6.8 and 10 weeks. Measurements were made on plantgrowth, yields of essential oil and chemical composition ofoil. The greatest morphological responses to increased shading intensitywere increases in stem length and leaf area. Little responseto shading was shown by mean relative growth rate (RGR) or meannet assimilation rate (NAR) while that of mean leaf area ratio(LAR) was marked. No significant differences in oil yield werefound among different treatments at the final harvest nor werethere great differences in amounts of menthol and menthone, two important constituents of Japanese mint oil. The experiments indicate that, within the experimental limitsimposed, Japanese mint tends to compensate in growth and oilproduction for shading effects. This work may also explain thedifferent and sometimes contradictory results reported in theliterature on the effects of shading on mint oil production  相似文献

Crossing blocks of Mentha arvensis cv Kalka (menthol mint without carvone) and Mentha spicata cv Neera (carvone mint without menthol) in alternate rows (2:1::Kalka:Neera), and pollination of florets of Kalka with that from Neera, yielded a carvone-rich variant among the open-pollinated seedlings. The variant possesses the hybrid phenotype, including the vigorous M. arvensis growth habit and the synthesis of rich oil aroma supplemented with a menthol tinge (carvone 64%–76% against 58% for the normal carvone mint cv Neera), and thus a novel combination of the essential oil. Chromosome counts and random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis confirmed that this spearmint variant, designated as the variety Neerkalka, is a unique interspecific hybrid (2n=5x=60) of M. arvensis cv Kalka (2n=8x=96) and M. spicata cv Neera (2n=2x=24). Vegetative multiplication of the hybrid was facilitated by its underground sucker-reproducing ability which is otherwise absent in spearmints. The per cent improvement in the variant ranged from 31–97 for herbage yield and 95–317 for oil yield over the standard spearmint varieties (MSS-5, Arka and Neera), with per hectare oil yields of 125.0 kg, 139.0 kg and 65.0 kg, respectively. Floral initiation in seedlings of Stylosanthes guianensis var.guianensis cv. Schofield grown at a photoperiod marginal forflowering (12–11.75 h) was promoted by a combination oflow day (25 °C) and low night (16 or 21 °C) temperatures, and completely inhibited by a 35 °C day temperature. Additionally, earliness of floral initiation under naturally decreasing daylengthwas negatively related to temperature regime over the range35/30 to 20/15 °C (day/night). Menthol is a highly valued monoterpene produced by Japanese mint (Mentha arvensis) as a natural product with wide applications in cosmetics, confectionery, flavours, beverages and therapeutics. Selection of high menthol yielding genotypes is therefore the ultimate objective of all genetic improvement programmes inMentha arvensis. A positive correlation was observed in the present study between menthol content in oils of evaluated genotypes and the level of tolerance to externally supplied menthol of explants of these genotypes in culture medium. The easy use of this relationship as a selectable biochemical marker opens the practical applicability of largescalein vitro screening of the germplasm, clones and breeders' material for selection of elite genotypes.  相似文献

Seedlings of Stylosanthes guianensis var. guianensis cv. Cookand S. guianensis var. pauciflora cv. Bandeirante were defoliatedand placed in a naturally lit glasshouse at 23/18 °C, 28/23°C or 33/28 °C (day/night). After exposure to 14 h daysand after floral induction with 30 cycles of 11 h, plants wereallocated to 11, 12, 13 or 14 h during flowering and seed formation. Floral initiation occurred after 10–15 short-day cycles.Flower appearance was hastened by warm temperatures and spikenumber per plant at 20 d after flower appearance was negativelyrelated to temperature and greater in Cook than in Bandeirante.Exposure to 13- and 14-h days reduced the continued differentiationof inflorescences in Bandeirante, and in Cook in warm temperatures.Floret number per spike was greatest at 23/18 °C and a higherproportion of florets aborted in Bandeirante at 33/ 28 °C.Variations in seed setting of the bi-articulate loment of Bandeiranteare described. Highest potential seed yield occurred if afterfloral induction 11 or 12 h days were maintained with 23/18°C or 28/23 °C temperatures. The use of herbs in pharmaceutical preparation is ever increasing, and the demand for pesticides free material by the concern industries is on the rise. Consequently the need to grow disease-free plants using non-chemical fertilizers and pesticides is the need of the hour. Mentha arvensis cv. kosi is highly infested with Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid and White) Chitwood, and severe oil yield loss occurs due to this nematode pest. Employing ecofriendly ways of nematode management, the mutualistic endophytes (Trichoderma harzianum strain Thu, Glomus intraradices) and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (Bacillus megaterium and Pseudomonas fluorescens) were assessed individually and in combination on plant biomass, oil yield of menthol mint (M. arvensis cv. kosi), reproduction potential and population development of root knot nematode, M. incognita under glasshouse conditions. These microbes enhanced the plant biomass and percent oil yield both with and without M. incognita inoculation. Dual application of mutualistic fungal endophytes and Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPRs) may be a wise option for enhancing the oil yield and tolerance of menthol mint against M. incognita infection.  相似文献

Triacontanol (TRIA) has been realized as a potent plant growth promoting substance for a number of agricultural and horticultural crops. Out of a large number of essential oil bearing plants, mint (Mentha arvensis L.) constitutes the most important source of therapeutic agents used in the alternative systems of medicine. The mint plant has marvelous medicinal properties. In view of enhancing growth, yield and quality of this medicinally important plant, a pot experiment was conducted according to simple randomized block design. The experiment was aimed at studying the effect of four concentrations of TRIA (10−0, 10−7, 10−6 and 10−5 M) on the performance of mint with regard to growth and other physiological attributes, crop yield and quality attributes and the yield and contents of active constituents of the plant. The growth and other physiological parameters as well as yield and quality attributes were studied at 100 and 120 DAP. The foliar application of TRIA at 10−6 M concentration significantly enhanced most of the growth and other physiological attributes, crop herbage yield and the yield and content of active constituents (menthol, l-methone, isomenthone and menthyl acetate) of mint at both the stages. However, the next higher concentration of TRIA (10−5 M) exhibited slightly negative effect and did not further increase the values of the attributes studied, but it proved significantly better than the control. Application of TRIA significantly enhanced the yield and content of all the active constituents determined by GLC technique.  相似文献

The effects of temperature, photoperiod and light integral onthe time to first flowering of pansy (ViolaxwittrockianaGams)were investigated. Plants were grown at six temperatures (meansbetween 14.8 and 26.1 °C), combined with four photoperiods(8, 11, 14 and 17 h). The rate of progress to flowering increasedlinearly with temperature (up to an optimum of 21.7 °C)and with increase in photoperiod (r2=0.91, 19 d.f.), the latterindicating that pansies are quantitative long day plants (LDPs).In a second experiment, plants were sown on five dates betweenJuly and December 1992 and grown in glasshouse compartmentsunder natural day lengths at six temperatures (means between9.4 and 26.3 °C). The optimum temperature for time to floweringdecreased linearly (from 21.3 °C) with declining light integralfrom 3.4 MJ m-2d-1(total solar radiation). Data from both experimentswere used to construct a photo-thermal model of flowering inpansy. This assumed that the rate of progress to flowering increasedas an additive linear function of light integral, temperatureand photoperiod. Independent data from plants sown on threedates, and grown at five temperatures (means between 9.8 and23.6 °C) were used to validate this model which gave a goodfit to the data (r2=0.88, 15 d.f.). Possible confounding ofthe effects of photoperiod and light integral are discussed. Pansy;Violaxwittrockiana; flowering; photo-thermal model; temperature; photoperiod; light integral  相似文献

The Growth and Development of Maize (Zea mays L.) at Five Temperatures   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The objectives of this work were to measure growth and developmentrates over a range of temperatures and to identify processeswhich may limit vegetative yield of maize (Zea mays L.). Twosingle cross Corn Belt Dent maize hybrids were grown from sowingin a diurnal temperature regime of 16/6 °C day/night andin constant temperature environments of 16, 20, 24 and 28 °C.The 16/6 °C environment was close to the minimum for sustainedgrowth and 28 °C was near the optimum. Entire plants wereharvested at stages with 4, 6, 7 and 8 mature leaves in alltemperature treatments except 20 °C in which the final twoharvests were carried out at 9 and 10 mature leaves. Mean totalleaf number varied between 19.5 and 16.0 with the maximum occurringat 16/6 °C. Although harvests were carried out at comparableleaf numbers, and hence at similar developmental stages, thetime interval between sowing and harvest decreased considerablyas temperatures increased. The relative rates of dry weight and leaf area accumulationwith time increased with a Q10 of 2.4 between 16 and 28 °C,while leaf appearance rate increased with a Q10 of 2.9 overthe same range; both rates were highest at 28 °C. Althoughdry matter partitioning to the shoots increased with temperature, the area of individual leaves varied in a systematic patternwhich resulted in maximum leaf area, leaf area duration andconsequently dry weight being realized at 20 °C for anygiven stage of development. Summary Potassium deficiency resulted in a increased accumulation of total phosphorus, inorganic phosphorus and sugar phosphate which suggested some interference in phosphorus metabolism predominantly beyond the sugar phosphate synthesis stage. Roots appeared to be a reservoir for accumulation of various phosphorus fractions of Japanese mint (Mentha arvensis L. var.piperascens).A higher respiration rate under potassium deficiency might be one of the factors to retard the inclusion of inorganic phosphorus into structural components, resulting in poor formation of organophosphorus compounds needed for plant growth and development. In spite of an increased essential oil content (ml/100 g dry weight) in a phosphorus deficient situation, total essential oil production (ml/plant) was low. Foliage growth, essential oil content and respiration was higher between 60 to 80 days and seemed to be associated with a high intensity of enzymatic and metabolic activity, as observed in various phosphorus fractions rising to a very high value after 80 days of crop growth.  相似文献

The effects of inoculation with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungus Glomusfasciculatum on the root colonization, growth, essential oil yield and nutrient acquisition of three cultivars of menthol mint (Mentha arvensis); Kalka, Shivalik and Gomti, were studied under field conditions. The VAM inoculation significantly increased the root colonization, plant height, fresh herbage and dry matter yield. oil content and oil yield as compared to non-inoculated cultivars. The effect of VAM inoculation on the root colonization, growth and yield of mint was more pronounced with the cv Shivalik than the cvs Kalka and Gomati, indicating Shivalik as a highly mycorrhizal dependent genotype. VAM inoculation significantly increased the uptake of N, P and K by shoot tissues of mint, but most markedly increased the uptake of P. The VAM-inoculated mint plants depleted the available N, P and K in the rhizosphere soil as compared to non-inoculated control plants, however the extent of nutrient depletion was greater for P than N and K. We conclude that the VAM inoculation could significantly increase the root colonization, growth, essential oil yield and nutrient acquisition of mint for obtaining economic production under field conditions.  相似文献

Effects of temperature on partition of assimilate between leaves, stems and panicles of pearl millet are analysed in terms ofa duration (tw) over which a structure increased in weight, and a partition factor (p)—the fraction of new dry matterallocated to the structure during tw. The value of tw was, forall structures, inversely proportional to temperature abovea base of 10 °C and below an optimum of 28 to 30 °C.For stems and panicles, the value of p was, with one exception, little affected by temperature. The dry weight of these structureswas, therefore, proportional to tw, and decreased with risein temperature. (The exception was panicles at the lowest temperature,19 °C, for which p was reduced by 40% because few grainswere set.) For leaves, however, p increased with rise in temperature, counteracting the effect on tw, such that dry weight changedlittle with temperature. The optimum temperature for reproductiveyield was 22 °C, but the proportion of the total dry matterallocated to reproductive structures changed little between22 °C and 31 °C. Factorial combinations of three photoperiods (10, 13 and 16h), two day temperatures (18 and 28 °C) and two night temperatures(5 and 13 °C) were imposed on nodulated plants of six diversegenotypes of faba bean (Vicia faba L.). Plants were grown inpots in growth cabinets from both vernalized (1.5±0.5°C for 30 d) and non-vernalized seeds. The times from sowingto the appearance of first open flowers (f) were recorded. Seedvernalization decreased the subsequent time taken to flowerin almost all genotype x growing environment combinations (theexceptions were plants of the cv. Maris Bead grown in threecooler, short-day regimes). The influence of temperature andphotoperiod on the rate of flowering was quantified, using amodel applied previously to other long-day species of grainlegume in which positive linear relations between both temperatureand photoperiod and the rate of progress towards flowering areassumed to apply. A significant positive linear response ofrate of progress towards flowering to limited ranges of meandiurnal temperature was detected in all six genotypes, but inthree genotypes (Syrian Local Large, Aquadulce and Maris Bead)the 28 °C day temperature reduced the rate of progress towardsflowering - suggesting that the optimum temperature for floweringin these genotypes is below 28 °C. In four genotypes (MarisBead, Giza-4, Aquadulce and BPL 1722) a significant positiveresponse to photoperiod, typical of quantitative long-day plants, was observed only in plants grown from vernalized seeds. Incontrast, plants of the genotype Zeidab Local grown from bothnon-vernalized and vernalized seeds showed the same positiveresponse to photoperiod, whereas plants of the land-race SyrianLocal Large were consistently unresponsive to photoperiod. Theimplications of this range of responses amongst diverse genotypesare discussed in relation to screening germplasm. The influence of temperature on nectar secretion in non-pollinatedflorets of Trifolium repens was investigated in growth chambersat 10, 14, 18 and 22°C. The effect of temperature on therate of nectar secretion was significant in all clones. Theoptimum temperature for secretion in three clones varied from10°C for a clone of Icelandic origin, to 18°C in a cloneselected from a Danish variety. Similarly, the average nectaryield varied significantly among clones of different geographicalorigin. One clone secreted two to four times more than othersat 10°C. The optimum day temperature for nectar secretionwas higher when the plants were exposed to low night temperature, presumably a result of decreased night respiration. Nectar accumulatedat the floret base until senescence. Evidence for reabsorptionof nectar was obtained in four clones. Sucrose, fructose andglucose were identified as the major sugars in the nectar. Highnight temperatures led to decreased sucrose percentage in favourof glucose and fructose. The frequency of new florets openingper day was not influenced by temperatures between 10 and 22°Cin one clone, whereas low temperatures significantly decreasedthe number of new florets in another. Few or no modified stomatawere observed in the epidermis of the nectary. The high variationwith respect to nectar secretion at low temperatures, alongwith the high heritability of this quality, suggests that breedingfor high nectar production at low temperature is plausible. The significance of nectar yield in pollination biology is discussed.Copyright1994, 1999 Academic Press Trifolium repens, white clover, nectar, temperature, floret age, flowering, nectary  相似文献

Exposure to high temperature (30 °C) before or after exposureto low temperature (0, 4 or 8 weeks at 4 °C) consistentlyincreased the number of leaf nodes at flowering and delayedflowering in a range of genotypes of spring rape(Brassica napusvar.annuaL.).Four days of prior exposure to high temperature had more effectthan 2 d, and the effect of subsequent exposure to high temperaturewas maximized when exposure commenced 1 week after the end ofthe low-temperature treatment. In genotypes that showed a vernalizationresponse (i.e. in which the number of leaf nodes at floweringwas reduced or flowering was advanced by low temperature), thisresponse was reduced or eliminated by either prior high-temperaturetreatment (antivernalization) or subsequent high-temperaturetreatment (devernalization). A biochemical model to accountfor these effects is proposed.Copyright 1998 Annals of BotanyCompany Brassica napusvar.annua, spring rape, antivernalization, devernalization, vernalization  相似文献

Factorial combinations of four photoperiods (10, 11·33,12·66 and 16 h d-1) and three mean diurnal temperatures(20·2, 24·1 and 28·1°C) were imposedon nodulated plants of three Nigerian bambara groundnut genotypes[Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc., syn. Voandzeia subterranea (L.)Thouars] grown in glasshouses in The Netherlands. The photothermalresponse of the onset of flowering and the onset of poddingwere determined. The time from sowing to first flower (f) wasdetermined by noting the day on which the first open flowerappeared. The time from sowing to the onset of podding (p) wasestimated from linear regressions of pod dry weight againsttime from sowing. Developmental rates were derived from thereciprocals of f and p. In two genotypes, 'Ankpa 2' and 'Yola',flowering occurred irrespective of photoperiod and 1/f was controlledby temperature only, occurring sooner at 28·1 than at20·2°C. The third genotype, 'Ankpa 4', was sensitiveto temperature and photoperiod and f was increased by coolertemperatures and photoperiods > 12·66 h d-1 at 20·2°Cand > 11·33 h d-1 at 24·1 and 28·1°C.In contrast, p was affected by temperature and photoperiod inall three genotypes. In bambara groundnut photoperiod-sensitivitytherefore increases between the onset of flowering and the onsetof podding. The most photoperiod-sensitive genotype with respectto p was 'Ankpa 4', followed by 'Yola' and 'Ankpa 2'. Therewas also variation in temperature-sensitivity between the genotypesinvestigated. Evaluation of bambara groundnut genotypes foradaptation to different photothermal environments will thereforerequire screening for flowering and podding responses.Copyright1994, 1999 Academic Press Vigna subterranea (L.) Maize (Zea mays L.) and spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)were grown in nutrient solution at uniformly high air temperature(20 °C), but different root zone temperatures (RZT 20, 16,12 °C). To manipulate the ratio of shoot activity to rootactivity, the plants were grown with their shoot base includingthe apical meristem either above (i.e. at 20 °C) or withinthe nutrient solution (i.e. at 20, 16 or 12 °C). In wheat, the ratio of shoot:root dry matter partitioning decreasedat low RZT, whereas the opposite was true for maize. In bothspecies, dry matter partitioning to the shoot was one-sidedlyincreased when the shoot base temperature, and thus shoot activity, were increased at low RZT. The concentrations of non-structuralcarbohydrates (NSC) in the shoots and roots were higher at lowin comparison to high RZT in both species, irrespective of theshoot base temperature. The concentrations of nitrogen (N) inthe shoot and root fresh matter also increased at low RZT withthe exception of maize grown at 12 °C RZT and 20 °Cshoot base temperature. The ratio of NSC:N was increased inboth species at low RZT. However this ratio was negatively correlatedwith the ratio of shoot:root dry matter partitioning in wheat, but positively correlated in maize. It is suggested that dry matter partitioning between shoot androots at low RZT is not causally related to the internal nitrogenor carbohydrate status of the plants. Furthermore, balancedactivity between shoot and roots is maintained by adaptationsin specific shoot and root activity, rather than by an alteredratio of biomass allocation between shoot and roots.Copyright1994, 1999 Academic Press Wheat, Triticum aestivum, maize, Zea mays, root temperature, shoot meristem temperature, biomass allocation, shoot:root ratio, carbohydrate status, nitrogen status, functional equilibrium  相似文献

Rye (Secale cereale cv. Rheidol) and wheat (Triticum aestivumcv. Mardler) were grown at shoot/root temperatures of 20/20°C (warm grown, WG plants), 8/8 °C (cold grown, CG plants)and 20/8 °C (differential grown, DG plants). Plants fromcontrasting growth temperature regimes were standardized andcompared using a developmental timescale based on accumulatedthermal time (°C d) at the shoot meristem. Accumulationof dry matter, nitrogen and potassium were exponential overthe time period studied (150–550 °C d). In rye, therates of plant dry matter and f. wt accumulation were linearlyrelated to the temperature of the shoot meristem. However, inwheat, although the rates of plant dry matter and f. wt accumulationwere temperature dependent, the linear relationship with shootmeristem temperature was weaker than in rye. The shoot/rootratio of rye was stable irrespective of growth temperature treatment, but the shoot/root ratio of wheat varied with growth temperaturetreatment. The shoot/root ratio of DG wheat was 50% greaterthan WG wheat. In both cereals, nutrient concentrations anddry matter content tended to be greater in organs exposed directlyto low temperatures. The mean specific absorption rates of nutrientswere calculated for the whole period studied for each species/temperaturecombination and were positively correlated with both plant shoot/rootratio and relative growth rate. The data suggest that nutrientuptake rates were influenced primarily by plant demand, withno indication of specific nutrient limitations at low temperatures.
