A theory for the geotropic movements of the Heliunthus unnuus hypocotyl has been given earlier by Johnsson et ul. In the present paper this theory is tested by extensive experiments. The magnitude as well as the rate of geotropic curvature are found to be in agreement with the theoretical predictions. Further, the geotropic reaction time, defined as the time between the start of geotropic stimulation and the start of the geotropic reaction is determined as a function of the stimulation angle with respect to the plumb line. A slight variation found in the reaction time is included in the theory.  相似文献

Geotropically induced phase-shifts in circumnutations of Heliauthus annuus hypocotyls are studied. - Theoretical deductions from a previously developed theory for geotropical movements are made for the case of a short gravitational stimulation in different phase positions of an oscillating hypocotyl. - Experimental studies are performed to test the theoretical results. - The conclusions are drawn, that the theory mentioned can satisfactorily describe geotropically induced phase-shifts. Oscillatory entrainment to the speech signal is important for language processing, but has not yet been studied in developmental disorders of language. Developmental dyslexia, a difficulty in acquiring efficient reading skills linked to difficulties with phonology (the sound structure of language), has been associated with behavioural entrainment deficits. It has been proposed that the phonological ‘deficit’ that characterises dyslexia across languages is related to impaired auditory entrainment to speech at lower frequencies via neuroelectric oscillations (<10 Hz, ‘temporal sampling theory’). Impaired entrainment to temporal modulations at lower frequencies would affect the recovery of the prosodic and syllabic structure of speech. Here we investigated event-related oscillatory EEG activity and contingent negative variation (CNV) to auditory rhythmic tone streams delivered at frequencies within the delta band (2 Hz, 1.5 Hz), relevant to sampling stressed syllables in speech. Given prior behavioural entrainment findings at these rates, we predicted functionally atypical entrainment of delta oscillations in dyslexia. Participants performed a rhythmic expectancy task, detecting occasional white noise targets interspersed with tones occurring regularly at rates of 2 Hz or 1.5 Hz. Both groups showed significant entrainment of delta oscillations to the rhythmic stimulus stream, however the strength of inter-trial delta phase coherence (ITC, ‘phase locking’) and the CNV were both significantly weaker in dyslexics, suggestive of weaker entrainment and less preparatory brain activity. Both ITC strength and CNV amplitude were significantly related to individual differences in language processing and reading. Additionally, the instantaneous phase of prestimulus delta oscillation predicted behavioural responding (response time) for control participants only.  相似文献

For more than a decade research on the botanical mechanism responsible for circumnutation has centered on whether or not these nearly ubiquitous oscillations can be attributed to a hunting process whereby the plant organ continuously responds to the gravity force and, by overshooting each stimulus, initiates a sustained oscillation or, driven by a not yet defined autogenic mechanism, performs oscillatory activities that require no external reinforcement to maintain the observed rhythms of differential growth.  相似文献

The effect of gravity compensation by the clinostat on the elongation, weight, and activity of two cell wall-loosening enzymes (cellulase and β-1,3-glucanase) in Helianthus annuus hypocotyls was examined. Gravity compensation increases elongation (28.1 %) and weight (18.3 %). The activity of cellulase extracted from the apical sections is raised, but there is no significant effect on β-1,3-glucanase. The relationship between gravity compensation, changes in auxin level, and function of these two enzymes in respect to elongation is discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of this research was to study the movement of 45Cain geotropically stimulated hypocotyls of Helianthus annuus.Six-day old seedlings fed with 45CaCl2 were placed horizontalfor 1, 2, or 3 hours. The 45Ca accumulated more in the upperhalf of the hypocotyl than in the lower half, particularly afterthree hours. Geotropic stimulation under nitrogen causes nosignificant difference between the two halves. The role of thisdifferential accumulation of Ca in geotropic curvature is discussed.  相似文献

The kinetics of 3H-labeled arachidonic acid (AA, 10—10-10—5 M) incorporation into murine peritoneal macrophages was investigated. During the incorporation of AA into the cells, the steady state was reached at 10 h. The level of incorporation consisted of 48-50% for nanomolar concentrations and 28-30% for micromolar concentrations of AA. Exogenous AA in micromolar but not nanomolar concentrations stimulated [3H]AA release from intracellular stores of pre-labeled cells. A mathematical model fitting the behavior of the experimental system is proposed. The difference in the level of uptake of AA in nanomolar and micromolar concentrations is explained by the activation of AA release from intracellular stores at high concentrations of exogenous AA.  相似文献

Non-chromotropic substances such as fibrin and gelatin and most tissue and cellular structures stain orthochromatically with internal dye concentrations of such metachromatic dyes as methylene blue and toluidine blue which, if in solution, would be metachromatic. Therefore, at ordinary levels of staining these substances depress the natural tendency of these dyes to change color. However, at elevated levels of dye-binding metachromasy eventually occurs. This phenomenon is explained on the basis of the distribution of dye-binding sites. In these substrates, by contrast with chromotropic substances, many binding sites are too far removed for dye interaction, consequently the interaction frequency can become high enough to produce a color change only as saturation of the available sites is approached. It is also shown that the destruction of color is a characteristic of metachromasy and that water molecules intercalated between approximated dye ions are responsible for the loss and change of color. A concept of metachromasy is proposed in which the interaction between water molecules and suitably approximated dye ions plays an essential role. The experimental studies are described against a background of the history and evolution of ideas on metachromasy. The literature is reviewed and reassessed particularly from the physicochemical viewpoint.  相似文献

Studies have been made of the distribution of 45Ca, 42K, totalK+ and 32P between the concave and convex sides of segmentsof hypocotyl of Helianthus annuus and coleoptiles of Zea maysduring curvatures induced by gravity, unilateral illuminationor unilateral applications of indol-3yl acetic acid (IAA). Theelements were fed to the roots of seedlings for a 3–4h pretreatment period. Distributions in segments in intact seedlingswere compared with those in explanted segments deprived of acontinuing supply of the element concerned in order to separatepossible differential transport of the element from the rootsfrom any real movement across the organ from side to side. Withall three treatments, and in both explants and intact plants,45Ca concentrations (on both fwt and dwt bases) were higheron the convex side. There was evidence of differential transportto the two sides and also of a direct movement across the parenchymafrom one side to the other. In organs where curvature was inhibitedby low temperatures (4 °C in geotropic experiments) or bythe antitropistic agent, N-1-naphthylphthalamic acid, no concentrationdifferences arose between the two sides. After the tropic stimulithe onset of the concentration differences preceded the onsetof curvature significantly, indicating that those differenceswere not caused by differential growth of the organ. The diuretic,mersalyl, applied unilaterally produced differences in elementconcentration of the same order and kind as similar treatmentwith IAA, but caused no growth curvatures. It is concluded that the movement of elements in tropicallycurving tissues, although apparently obligately-linked withcurvature, is not the result of that curvature or its cause,but is in some as yet undefined way an outcome of auxin gradientsin the tissue.  相似文献

Environmental factors that induce spatial heterogeneity of stomatal conductance, g s, called stomatal patchiness, also reduce the photochemical capacity of CO2 fixation, yet current methods cannot distinguish between the relative effect of stomatal patchiness and biochemical limitations on photosynthetic capacity. We evaluate effects of stomatal patchiness and the biochemical capacity of CO2 fixation on the sensitivity of net photosynthetic rate (P N) to stomatal conductance (g s), θ (θ = δP N/g s). A qualitative model shows that stomatal patchiness increases the sensitivity θ while reduced biochemical capacity of CO2 fixation lowers θ. We used this feature to distinguish between stomatal patchiness and mesophyll impairments in the photochemistry of CO2 fixation. We compared gas exchange of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) plants grown in a growth chamber and fed abscisic acid, ABA (10−5 M), for 10 d with control plants (-ABA). P N and g s oscillated more frequently in ABA-treated than in control plants when the leaves were placed into the leaf chamber and exposed to a dry atmosphere. When compared with the initial CO2 response measured at the beginning of the treatment (day zero), both ABA and control leaves showed reduced P N at particular sub-stomatal CO2 concentration (c i) during the oscillations. A lower reduction of P N at particular g s indicated overestimation of c i due to stomatal patchiness and/or omitted cuticular conductance, g c. The initial period of damp oscillation was characterised by inhibition of chloroplast processes while stomatal patchiness prevailed at the steady state of gas exchange. The sensitivity θ remained at the original pre-treatment values at high g s in both ABA and control plants. At low g s, θ decreased in ABA-treated plants indicating an ABA-induced impairment of chloroplast processes. In control plants, g c neglected in the calculation of g s was the likely reason for apparent depression of photosynthesis at low g s. We develop an approach to find an energy-optimal stimulus that entrains an ensemble of uncertain, uncoupled limit cycle oscillators. Furthermore, when entrainment occurs, the phase shift between oscillators is constrained to be less than a predetermined amount. This approach is illustrated for a model of Drosophila circadian activity, for which it performs better than a standard 24-h light-dark cycle. Because this method explicitly accounts for uncertainty in a given system and only requires information that is experimentally obtainable, it is well suited for experimental implementation and could ultimately represent what is believed to be a novel treatment for patients suffering from advanced/delayed sleep-phase syndrome.  相似文献

Experimental and theoretical study of sensors based on enhanced transmission through periodic metal nanoslits is presented. Our approach consists of the design of one-dimensional nanoslits array and its application in sensing for water quality control. Rigorous coupled waves analysis was used for the design and fit to the experimental data. Two types of surface plasmon resonance excitations are shown to be possible, one at the upper grating–analyte interface and one at the lower grating–substrate interface. This latter resonance is shown to be affected by the multiple interference or cavity-type effects. Those structures were fabricated by deposition of the metal layer and electron beam lithography of the nanostructure. We found that Ag-based periodic array exhibits the highest sensitivity to refractive index variations. Sensitivity enhancement was measured by ethanol concentrations in water. Stability of the Ag-based sensor was improved by covering the grating with less than 15 nm polymethyl methacrylate capping layer without deterioration of the sensitivity.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. A series of experiments was carried out on bioconvection using cultures of Polytomella agilis, Tetrahymena pyriformis and Chlamydomonas moewusii. During convection these microorganisms disperse into more and less dense regions causing visible patterns. These patterns, called the cell plan forms, were found to change with increasing Rayleigh numbers above Rc, the lowest concentration gradient at which bioconvection occurs. Hexagonal convection cells were observed near the critical Rayleigh number, Rc. As the Rayleigh number was increased the cell plan form changed from hexagons to 2-dimensional rolls and then to square convection cells. The size of the observed convection cells was less than expected for such a physical phenomenon. This appears to result from an increasing tendency of the microorganisms to circulate near the upper surface at higher Rayleigh numbers. The square convection cells appear to be unique to bioconvection. The inhibition of bioconvection is directly linked to an increased mortality rate. Observations on the nature of negative geotaxis were made which tend to support the statocyst hypothesis.  相似文献

Inhibitors of carbonic anhydrase (hCA; EC 4.2.1.1) are used as medicines for many diseases. Therefore, they are very important. In this study, a known series of Schiff bases were synthesized and their effects on the activities of hCA‐I and hCA‐II, which are cytosolic isoenzymes of carbonic anhydrase, were investigated under in vitro conditions. The synthesized compounds (H1, H2, H3, and H4) were found to cause inhibition on enzyme activities of hCA‐1 and hCA‐II. IC50 values of H1, H2, H3, and H4 compounds were 140, 88, 201, and 271 μM for hCA‐I enzyme activity and 134, 251, 79, and 604 μM for hCA‐II enzyme activity, respectively. The synthesized Schiff bases were characterized by several methods, including 1H NMR, FT‐IR, elemental analysis, and polarimetric measurements. Correlation coefficient square values (R2) of comparison of the theoretical and experimental 1H NMR shifts for H1, H2, H3, and H4 compounds were found as 0.9781, 0.9814, 0.9758, and 0.8635, respectively.  相似文献

Adhesive interactions have long been proposed to play a centralrole in the patterning of neural structures and their interconnections.Many of these ideas are based upon experiments on the projectionfrom the eye to the optic tectum (the retinotectal projection)in lowervertebrates. In order to test the feasibility of suchproposals, a detailed model, based largely on adhesive interactionsbetween cells, has been developed. Computer simulations of themodelshow that simple adhesive interactions are sufficient toexplain much of the literature on the patterning of the amphibianretinotectal projection. Aspects of the model have been experimetallytested through the use of antibodies to known adhesive molecules.The results of these experiments appear consistent with therole of adhesion in the patterning of the connections and withthe predictions of the model. Although such experiments demonstratethe power of adhesive cell interactions in the patterning ofnerve connections, additional experiments and simulations demonstratethat some other non-adhesive processes may play a role. In particular,the addition of a process that is dependent on the activityof the neurons allows the model to better fit the literature.An activity-dependent competition between neurons for adhesivesites on the target cells appears to be sufficient to play thisrole.  相似文献

Abstract

Resonance Raman spectra with Q-band excitation are reported for microperoxidase-11, the cytochrome c analog. Spectra were acquired in the mid-frequency range for the oxidized, and reduced forms of the undecapeptide, as well as for the imidazole and carbonyl complexes. Oxidation and spin state marker bands of the undecapeptides are consistent with a six-coordinate, low spin iron in both oxidation states. Porphyrin core size correlations yield a porphyrin-centre to pyrrole-nitrogen distance of 2.00 Å for MP11, suggestive of a six-coordinate species in a distorted heme environment. Molecular dynamics results show that the non-planarity of the heme of the parent cytochrome is conserved in the microperoxidase and its carbonmonoxy analog.  相似文献
