Twenty enzymes and three non-enzymatic proteins were examined by electrophoresis in samples of the Atlantic mackerel Scomber scombrus. The observed phenotypes were attributed to genes at thirty-nine loci. Seven loci were variable giving a mean heterozygosity of 0.049 ± 0.033. Heterozygosity estimates for marine teleosts are discused.  相似文献

The spawning grounds of the Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) are traditionally considered to be the Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of Mexico) and the Mediterranean Sea (Mediterranean Sea). However, for the western Atlantic, unequivocal evidence of bluefin spawning outside the Gulf of Mexico has been shown. In this study we present the first records of genetically confirmed bluefin larvae in the southern Bay of Biscay (eastern Atlantic). These findings provide evidence of bluefin spawning activity outside the Mediterranean Sea, in the north-eastern Atlantic. However, our results suggest that the bluefin spawning in the Bay of Biscay is a sporadic phenomenon.  相似文献

The distribution of scleractinian corals in the Bay of Biscay, NE Atlantic   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Studies on the distribution of scleractinian corals in the Bay of Biscay were relatively numerous during the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century. Yet, recent reports are scattered, sometimes unpublished, and therefore knowledge about the current coral occurrence in the area is limited. This study aims at compiling the available historical and more recently collected information on the occurrence of scleractinian corals in the Bay of Biscay. Data from two recent cruises are included and compared with previous explored coral sites from as early as 1830 up to 1995. A database of 347 records including 34 described species of scleractinians highlights that the slope of the Bay of Biscay is an important habitat for scleractinians. This could be expected due to the high topographic relief providing the necessary hard substrate and accelerated bottom current flow that corals require. Further exploration of the occurrence and ecology of corals in the area is recommended to support the conservation of cold-water coral reefs along the European margin. Mean length and mean weight at age of Atlantic mackerel in the North Sea increased significantly between 1960 and 1979, then, decreased markedly during the 1980s. In contrast, median age at maturity decreased (c. 1-1.5 years) from 1960. Median length at maturity remained stable until the 1980s, when it declined sharply. The significance of these changes is discussed in relation to variation in sea temperature, food availability and stock size. It is speculated that the changes during the 1980s resulted from immigration of western stock mackerel.  相似文献

A serum esterase polymorphism in the Atlantic mackerel Scomber scombrus revealed a significant excess of homozygotes in seven of eleven area samples collected in the N.E. Atlantic. Breaking down the data by sex, year class, size within year class and haul did not remove the homozygous excess. The presence of a null allele is unlikely due to the high frequency required and the lack of null allele homozygotes. It is suggested that the homozygous excess might arise from a shifting selection on different batches of larvae produced over the spawning area and season.  相似文献

Predation of three calanoid copepods (Calanus helgolandicus, Temora longicornis and Centropages chierchiae) on phytoplankton, dinoflagellates and ciliates was estimated in the Gironde estuarine plume (Bay of Biscay) during winter by means of in situ incubations. Both phytoplankton and ciliates were part of the diet of those three species, while only Centropages chierchiae also included a significant portion of dinoflagellates in its diet. The clearance rates of Calanus helgolandicus for ciliates and phytoplankton reached 2.8 and 4.0 ml copepod–1 h–1, respectively, those of Temora longicornis were 3.2 and 1.8 ml copepod–1 h–1, and those of Centropages chierchiae were 4.3 and 0.8 ml copepod–1 h–1.Neither Calanus helgolandicus nor Temora longicornis selected dinoflagellates, given the low clearance rates measured for this prey category (0.05 and 0.03 ml copepod–1 h–1, respectively). By contrast, Centropages chierchiae included dinoflagellates in its diet, with a clearance rate of 4.9 ml copepod–1 h–1. Within a given prey category (ciliates or dinoflagellates), all three copepods selected larger prey types (>40 m) over smaller ones (40 m). This implies a better detection and capture of larger motile prey compared to small ones. The results are discussed with regard to the omnivorous feeding behavior of these copepods observed here, during a late winter phytoplankton bloom.  相似文献

Geometry of the caudal fin of the mackerel Scomber scombrus was modified to examine the effect of the height of the fin on swimming kinematics. Mackerel with reduced caudal fin height had significantly shorter stride length and higher tail beat amplitude compared with the control having an intact caudal fin ( P  < 0·005).  相似文献

A foraminifera-based transfer function has been developed using a modern dataset of 46 samples and 23 species obtained from four Basque marshes in Northern Spain. The relationship between observed and foraminifera-predicted elevation illustrated the strong performance of the transfer function (). Indeed, these results indicate that precise reconstructions of former sea levels are possible (RMSEPjack = 0.27 m). The precision of the transfer function is comparable to other foraminifera-based transfer functions from the northern Atlantic Ocean. This is even more important considering that sampling procedures did not involve taking samples along transects that reflect the elevational gradient of concern. Instead, sampling was performed randomly to avoid possible correlation between the different variables controlling the foraminiferal distribution (e.g., elevation and salinity). This transfer function has been constructed including agglutinated and calcareous foraminifera with the aim of increasing the range of sedimentary environments that can yield relative sea-level (RSL) data, and providing improved quantitative reconstructions with defined error terms in a region (Bay of Biscay) where highest marsh surfaces are under-represented in late Holocene sedimentary sequences.  相似文献

The Nivelle River, a typical Pyrenean mountainous watershed reaching the Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean), was sampled with high resolution during 1996. The particulate organic carbon (POC) contents during successive floods shows that there is a graduated impoverishment of the organic fraction of suspended particulate matter (SPM) from the first flood to the next ones, reaching a threshold value (3%) attributed to allochtonous fraction (soil). On the basis of the high frequency data of water discharge and POC concentration, an annual POC flux was established: 845 tons, corresponding to a specific POC flux of 5.3 tC km−2 yr−1. This value was obtained during a dry period and must be considered as a minimum value for longer time scale. The POC originated mostly from soil (55%) and riparian/litter (~40%) with a very minor (<5%) contribution of autochthonous POC. Thirty-two percent of the annual POC flux was carried in 1% of time and 66% in 10% of time. The specific POC yield, 5.3 tC km−2 yr−1, if extended to the whole mountainous area of the southern coast of the Bay of Biscay (19,000 km2), leads to an estimated POC flux around 100,000 t yr−1. Although small Cantabrian mountainous rivers contributed to only 28% of the freshwater discharge in the Bay of Biscay, their POC load was estimated to account for 70% of the total POC inputs in the Bay.  相似文献

Histological examination of ovaries from European hake Merluccius merluccius from the Bay of Biscay sampled on a monthly basis from December 1996 to October 1997 demonstrated that European hake exhibit indeterminate fecundity. Oocyte development is asynchronous with a continuous oocyte size-frequency distribution in prespawning, spawning and postspawning females, and a gradual decrease in the mean diameter of advanced yolked oocytes as spawning proceeds. Spawning European hake were observed throughout the 11 month study period. The spawning fraction ranged from 0·085 to 0·207, which is equivalent to a batch interval of 5–12 days. The spawning fraction and proportion of spawning females were highest from January to March. Seasonal variation of atresia was inversely related to spawning fraction. Extensive atresia in individual fish was observed in September and October, when the spawning fraction was low.  相似文献

The total annual fecundity of mackerel, Scomber scombrus L., during a spawning season is produced by release of discrete batches of eggs. Total fecundity is then the product of the number of batches times the batch fecundity ( F bw). An extensive trawl survey of the Western mackerel stock in the NE Atlantic was undertaken in the 1989 spawning season. Batch fecundity was estimated for 298 fish by counting hydrated eggs in ovaries just prior to ovulation. F bw, expressed as eggs g−1 body weight, varied with latitude: south of 51°N, F bw= 55.49, s.e. = 2.04, n = 227; between 51°N and 55°N, F bw= 45.72, s.e. = 3.41, n = 52 and north of 55° N, F bw= 41.33, s.e. = 5.52, n = 19. It is suggested that as spawning fish migrate northwards the batch size decreases with progress of the spawning season.  相似文献

Sexually mature female hake Merluccius merluccius with hydrated ovaries were sampled on a monthly basis in the Bay of Biscay, from May 1996 to October 1997 and from March to April 1998. The batch fecundity was positively related to total length. The relative batch fecundity ( F Brel) varied significantly among months and years, but not between areas, i.e. International Council for the Exploration of the Sea Divisions VIIIa and VIIIb within the Bay of Biscay. Two levels of F Brel were found in 1997: the highest between January and April (mean ± s . e . 167 ± 5 eggs g−1) and the lowest from May to October (112 ± 3 eggs g−1). Population condition factor and gonado-somatic indices ( I G) followed the expected trend in relation to the monthly changes in F Brel during 1997. The F Brel variation between years was 9% for 1996–1997 and 28% for 1997–1998, and the difference of the I G was c. 14 and 36%, respectively. Population relative egg production varied from a high value in January to March (985 eggs g−1) to a low egg production between April and October 1997 (445 eggs g−1).  相似文献

The exponential abundance increase of a sub-tropical species, boarfish (Capros aper), as well as the sea bottom temperature increase in the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay (France) over the three last decades are reported. This species was rare in the seventies and is now a dominant one. This is a small bathy-demersal, probably short-lived species with few predators (probably because of the presence of strong spines) and not exploited by fisheries. In the same time, a significant temperature increase in the bottom waters is observed during the breeding season of this population. The boarfish abundance increase is related to the warming, its ability to invade and the absence of predators as well as the absence of fishing.  相似文献

In a 10-stations bathymetrical transect in the Bay of Biscay, we observed important changes in the density, composition and microhabitats of live foraminiferal faunas from the outer continental shelf to the abyssal plain. Four zones are recognised: (1) at the upper continental shelf (140 m water depth), foraminiferal densities are very high and the superficial sediment is occupied by Bolivina subaenariensis and Valvulineria bradyana. Globobulimina spp., Chilostomella oolina and Nonion fabum dominate the infaunal niches, which are positioned close to the sediment-water interface due to a strong compaction of the vertical succession of redox zones. (2) At the upper continental slope stations (300-1000 m), foraminiferal densities are high and the superficial sediments are dominated by Uvigerina mediterranea/peregrina. Deeper in the sediment, intermediate infaunal niches are occupied by Melonis barleeanus. Due to a deeper oxygen penetration, the deep infaunal taxa Globobulimina spp. and C. oolina live at a considerable depth in the sediment. (3) At the mid and lower slope stations (1000-2000 m) in the superficial sediment Cibicidoides kullenbergi and Hoeglundina elegans progressively replace U. mediterranea. U. peregrina is still a dominant taxon, reflecting its preference for a somewhat intermediate organic flux level. Deep infaunal taxa become increasingly rare. (4) At the lower slope and abyssal plane stations (deeper than 2000 m), faunal densities are very low and the fauna is composed exclusively by shallow infaunal species, such as Nuttallides umboniferus and Melonis pompilioides. The foraminiferal data together with the pore water data in the sediment give evidence of the presence of a trophic gradient from very eutrophic settings at the upper continental shelf towards oligotrophic settings at the abyssal area.  相似文献

A fossil primnoid gorgonian skeleton (Octocorallia) was recovered on the eastern Galician Massif in the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic) from 720 m water depth. The skeleton shows a growth banding of alternating Mg–calcitic and organic (gorgonin) increments in the inner part, surrounded by a ring of massive fibrous calcite. Three calcite-dominated cycles, bounded by thick organic layers, consist of five light-dark couplets of calcite and gorgonin. Two AMS-14C datings of the fossil skeleton give ages of 10,880 and 10,820 ± 45 14C years before present (BP). We arrive at a calibrated age range of 11,829–10,072 cal. years BP (two σ), which comprises the late Younger Dryas to the earliest part of the Holocene. The cyclic calcitic–organic growth banding may be controlled by a constant rate of calcite secretion with a fluctuating rate of gorgonin production, possibly related to productivity cycles. The skeletal fabric change of alternating calcitic–organic increments to massive fibrous calcite may be the result of hydrographic changes during the deglaciation as reflected by preliminary stable isotope data. If this hypothesis proves to be correct, primnoid gorgonians are able to match with varying hydrodynamic conditions by changing their biomineralisation mode.  相似文献

A study of stage structured model of fish population is presented. This model focuse on the anchovy population in the Bay of Biscay (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) is presented. The method of study is based on an intermediate complexity mathematical model, taking into account the spatialisation, the environmental conditions and the stage-structure of the fishes. First, to test the model, we show mathematical properties, such as unicity of the solution of structural stability. Then we provide numerical simulations, to validate the model and to test the dynamics according to the variations of the parameters.  相似文献
