Sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) have several advantages, such as a lower footprint and a higher flexibility, compared to biofilm based reactors, such as rotating biological contactors. However, the critical parameters for a fast start-up of the nitrogen removal by oxygen-limited autotrophic nitrification/denitrification (OLAND) in a SBR are not available. In this study, a low critical minimum settling velocity (0.7 m h−1) and a low volumetric exchange ratio (25%) were found to be essential to ensure a fast start-up, in contrast to a high critical minimum settling velocity (2 m h−1) and a high volumetric exchange ratio (40%) which yielded no successful start-up. To prevent nitrite accumulation, two effective actions were found to restore the microbial activity balance between aerobic and anoxic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AerAOB and AnAOB). A daily biomass washout at a critical minimum settling velocity of 5 m h−1 removed small aggregates rich in AerAOB activity, and the inclusion of an anoxic phase enhanced the AnAOB to convert the excess nitrite. This study showed that stable physicochemical conditions were needed to obtain a competitive nitrogen removal rate of 1.1 g N L−1 d−1. 相似文献

A sequencing batch reactor system for high-level biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal from abattoir wastewater 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system is demonstrated to biologically remove nitrogen, phosphorus and chemical oxygen demand
(COD) to very low levels from abattoir wastewater. Each 6 h cycle contained three anoxic/anaerobic and aerobic sub-cycles
with wastewater fed at the beginning of each anoxic/anaerobic period. The step-feed strategy was applied to avoid high-level
build-up of nitrate or nitrite during nitrification, and therefore to facilitate the creation of anaerobic conditions required
for biological phosphorus removal. A high degree removal of total phosphorus (>98%), total nitrogen (>97%) and total COD (>95%)
was consistently and reliably achieved after a 3-month start-up period. The concentrations of total phosphate and inorganic
nitrogen in the effluent were consistently lower than 0.2 mg P l−1 and 8 mg N l−1, respectively. Fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed that the sludge was enriched in Accumulibacter spp. (20–40%), a known polyphosphate accumulating organism, whereas the known glycogen accumulating organisms were almost
absent. The SBR received two streams of abattoir wastewater, namely the effluent from a full-scale anaerobic pond (75%) and
the effluent from a lab-scale high-rate pre-fermentor (25%), both receiving raw abattoir wastewater as feed. The pond effluent
contained approximately 250 mg N l−1 total nitrogen and 40 mg P l−1 of total phosphorus, but relatively low levels of soluble COD (around 500 mg l−1). The high-rate lab-scale pre-fermentor, operated at 37°C and with a sludge retention time of 1 day, proved to be a cheap
and effective method for providing supplementary volatile fatty acids allowing for high-degree of biological nutrient removal
from abattoir wastewater. 相似文献

In this research, investigations were made on material transfer mechanisms and optimum operation mode for sequencing batch reactor system removing phosphorus and nitrogen simultaneously. Phosphorus release characteristics were expressed in the Monod equation, in which the reaction rate was replaced with specific phosphorus release (SPR) rate. The rate of SPR was increased during the first 80 days, but increased sharply to reach 0.003 hr-1 afterwards. Phosphorus removal efficiencies were about 60% in the first 80 days, 75% after 80 days, and above 95% after 120 days. After 120 days, phosphorus concentration in effluent was below 0.5 mgl-1 when 8 mgl-1 was in the influent and the released phosphorus after 3-hour-anaerobic period was 60 mgl-1. In the proposed optimum operation strategy (2-hour anaerobic react, 3-hour aerobic react, 4-hour anoxic react, and 3-hour settle and draw), phosphorus reappeared if the oxidized nitrogen was completely denitrified. In order to prevent this undesirable phosphorus release, anoxic period should be reduced to the extent of which the minimal concentration of the oxidized nitrogen existed. Phosphorus removal efficiency was stable under shock load as 5 times high as normal phosphorus concentration.Abbreviations dP/dt

The aim of this study was to examine nitrogen removal from slaughterhouse wastewater in a laboratory-scale sequencing batch
reactor (SBR) operated at low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels under two aeration strategies: intermittent aeration (IA) and continuous
aeration (CA). Under the IA strategy, during the aeration periods, the maximum DO was controlled at 10% saturation; under
the CA strategy, in the first hour of the react phase, the DO was maintained at 10% saturation, and then it was kept at 2–3%
saturation in the remaining react phase. Total nitrogen removals of up to 95 and 91% were achieved under the IA and CA aeration
strategies, respectively. It is proposed that in situ measurement of oxygen utilization rates can be used to control the operation
of SBRs for nitrogen removal. 相似文献

Biological phosphorus removal in sequencing batch reactor with single-stage oxic process 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The performance of biological phosphorus removal (BPR) in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with single-stage oxic process was investigated using simulated municipal wastewater. The experimental results showed that BPR could be achieved in a SBR without anaerobic phase, which was conventionally considered as a key phase for BPR. Phosphorus (P) concentration 0.22–1.79 mg L−1 in effluent can be obtained after 4 h aeration when P concentration in influent was about 15–20 mg L−1, the dissolved oxygen (DO) was controlled at 3 ± 0.2 mg L−1 during aerobic phase and pH was maintained 7 ± 0.1, which indicated the efficiencies of P removal were achieved 90% above. Experimental results also showed that P was mainly stored in the form of intracellular storage of polyphosphate (poly-P), and about 207.235 mg phosphates have been removed by the discharge of rich-phosphorus sludge for each SBR cycle. However, the energy storage poly-β-hydroxyalkanoates (PHA) was almost kept constant at a low level (5–6 mg L−1) during the process. Those results showed that phosphate could be transformed to poly-P with single-stage oxic process without PHA accumulation, and BPR could be realized in net phosphate removal. 相似文献

Summary The effects of nitrate on phosphorus release and uptake in a sequencing batch reactor for biological phosphorus removal was
investigated. The addition of nitrate decreased phosphorus release in the anaerobic stage. The synthesis of poly(hydroxyalkanoates)
was decreased with the presence of nitrate, possibly due to the competitive utilization of the carbon source by PHA synthesis
and denitrification of nitrate. Instead of oxygen, nitrate could be used as an electron acceptor for phosphorus removal. However,
the simultaneous addition of nitrate and acetate greatly reduced the phosphorus removal rate. Phosphate and nitrate could
be removed simultaneously with nitrate as the electron acceptor, and the continuous and steady feeding of nitrate was beneficial
to phosphate removal. 相似文献

The effect of the different carbon sources acetate, acetate/glucose or glucose on the enhanced biological phosphorus removal
(EBPR) process was studied by experiments under alternating anaerobic–aerobic conditions in one sequencing batch reactor for
each carbon source. The glucose was consumed completely within the first 30 min of the anaerobic phase whereas acetate degradation
was slow and incomplete. Phosphate was released independently of the carbon source during the whole anaerobic phase. The highest
phosphate release (27 mg P l−1) and polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) storage (20 mg C g−1 dry matter (DM)) during the anaerobic phase as well as the highest polyphosphate (poly-P) (8 mg P g−1 DM) and glycogen storage (17 mg C g−1 DM) during the aerobic phase were observed with acetate. In contrast to other investigations, glycogen storage did not increase
with glucose as substrate but was significantly smaller than with acetate. The PHA composition was also influenced strongly
by the carbon source. The polyhydroxyvalerate (PHV) portion of the PHA was maximal 17% for acetate and 82% for glucose. Due
to the strong influence of the carbon source on the PHA concentration and composition, PHA storage seems to regulate mainly
the phosphate release and uptake.

In this study, effect of low intensity ultrasound on the activity of anammox microbial consortium for nitrogen removal was investigated through batch experiments at the same irradiation frequency of 25 kHz. Total nitrogen removal rate increased by about 25.5% when ultrasound intensity of 0.3 w cm−2 was applied at an optimal irradiation time of 4 min, and further experiments demonstrated that this effect could last for about 6 days. Analysis of extracellular polymeric substances indicated that the maximum increase of carbohydrate, protein and total extracellular substances was obtained on the first day after ultrasound, which was 28.8%, 30.5% and 29.7%, respectively. As the time prolonged, the production rate of extracellular carbohydrate, protein decreased gradually. Transmission electron microscopy observation demonstrated that ultrasounded cell wall of anammox microbial consortium became thinner resulting in increased release of extracellular substances. The results suggested that application of low intensity ultrasound may enhance the activity of anammox microbial consortium and ultimately the potential for nitrogen removal. 相似文献

The feasibility of a new flowchart describing simultaneous hydrogen sulfide removal from biogas and nitrogen removal from wastewater was investigated. It took 30 days for the reactor inoculated with aerobic sludge to attain a removal rate of 60% for H2S and NOx–N simultaneously. It took 34 and 48 days to attain the same removal rate for the reactor without inoculated sludge and the reactor inoculated with anaerobic sludge respectively. The reactor without inoculated sludge still operated successfully, despite requiring a slightly longer startup time. The packing material was capable of enhancing the removal efficiency of reactors. Based on the concentration of NOx–N and H2S in the effluent, the loading rate and the ability of the system to resist shock loading, the performance of the reactor filled with hollow plastic balls was greater than that of the reactor filled with elastic packing and the reactor filled with Pall rings. 相似文献

Enhanced biological phosphate removal by granular sludge in a sequencing batch reactor 总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
A laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor was started-up with flocculated biomass and operated primarily for enhanced biological phosphate removal. Ten weeks after the start-up, gradual formation of granular sludge was observed. The compact biomass structure allowed halving the settling time, the initial reactor volume, and doubling the influent COD concentration. Continued operation confirmed the possibility of maintaining a stable granular biomass with a sludge volume index less than 40 ml g–1, while securing a removal efficiency of 95% for carbon, 99.6% for phosphate, and 71% for nitrogen. Microscopic observations revealed a morphological diversity. 相似文献

Model-based optimization of a sequencing batch reactor for biological nitrogen removal 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An optimal operating mode for a sequencing batch reactor was determined via a model-based optimization. Synthetic wastewater containing mainly organic matter (as glucose) and nitrogen (as ammonium chloride) was treated without any addition of an external carbon source to accomplish denitrification step. A simplified model was used to describe process dynamics, comprised of six ordinary differential equations and an empirical correlation for oxygen consumption rate. Batch cycle time was the chosen objective function to be minimized for a fixed volume of waste to be treated. Furthermore, as SBR operation is divided in two major phases - aerobic and anoxic, to achieve total pollutants removal within minimum time, these phases can be repeatedly alternated. To ensure availability of organic matter necessary for denitrification, these two phases were combined with feed steps. Different feed strategies were tested using one, two or three feed steps. A successive quadratic programming algorithm was used, and maximum values for final COD, nitrate and ammonium concentrations, as well as maximum feed pump flow rate were some the process constraints. One step feed strategy was indicated by the optimization leading to a batch cycle time of 5h. 相似文献

The supernatant from mesophilic anaerobic digestion of piggery wastewater is characterised by a high amount of COD (4.1 g COD L(-1)), ammonium (2.3g NH(4)(+)-NL(-1)) and suspended solids (2.5 g SS L(-1)). This effluent can be efficiently treated by means of a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) strategy for biological COD, SS and nitrogen removal including a Coagulation/Flocculation step. Total COD and SS reduction yields higher than 66% and 74%, respectively, and a total nitrogen removal (via nitrite) of more than 98% were reached when working with HRT 2.7 days, SRT 12 days, temperature 32 degrees C, three aerobic/anoxic periods, without external control of pH and under limited aeration flow. The inhibition of nitrite oxidizing biomass was achieved by the working free ammonia concentration and the restricted air supply (dissolved oxygen concentration below 1 mg O(2)L(-1)). Since a part of the total COD was colloidal and/or refractory, a Coagulation/Flocculation step was implemented inside the SBR operating strategy to meet a suitable effluent quality to be discharged. Several Jar-Tests demonstrated that the optimal concentration of FeCl(3) was 800 mg L(-1). A respirometric assay showed that this coagulant dosage did not affect the biological activity of nitrifying/denitrifying biomass. 相似文献

Phenol inhibition of biological nutrient removal in a four-step sequencing batch reactor 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Nutrient removal from synthetic wastewater was investigated using a four-step sequencing batch reactor (SBR) at different phenol (C6H5OH) concentrations in order to determine the inhibition effects of phenol on biological nutrient removal. The nutrient removal process consisted of anaerobic, oxic, anoxic, and oxic phases with hydraulic residence times (HRT) of 1 h/3 h/1 h/1 h and a settling phase of 3/4 h. Solids retention time (SRT) was kept constant at 10 days in all experiments. Initial phenol concentrations were varied between 0 and 600 mg l−1 at seven different levels. The effects of phenol on COD, NH4-N, and PO4-P removals and effluent nutrient levels were investigated. Phenol was almost completely degraded up to 400 mg l−1 phenol concentration resulting in almost negligible inhibition effects on COD, NH4-N, and PO4-P removals. Nutrient removals were adversely affected by phenol at concentrations above 400 mg l−1. Above 95% COD, 90% NH4-N and 65% PO4-P removal was obtained for phenol concentrations below 400 mg l−1. The sludge volume index (SVI) was almost constant around 45 ml g−1 for phenol concentrations below 400 mg l−1 but increased to 90 ml g−1 at a phenol level of 600 mg l−1. 相似文献

Nutrient removal from slaughterhouse wastewater in an intermittently aerated sequencing batch reactor 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The performance of a 10 L sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treating slaughterhouse wastewater was examined at ambient temperature. The influent wastewater comprised 4672+/-952 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L, 356+/-46 mg total nitrogen (TN)/L and 29+/-10 mg total phosphorus (TP)/L. The duration of a complete cycle was 8 h and comprised four phases: fill (7 min), react (393 min), settle (30 min) and draw/idle (50 min). During the react phase, the reactor was intermittently aerated with an air supply of 0.8L/min four times at 50-min intervals, 50 min each time. At an influent organic loading rate of 1.2g COD/(Ld), average effluent concentrations of COD, TN and TP were 150 mg/L, 15 mg/L and 0.8 mg/L, respectively. This represented COD, TN and TP removals of 96%, 96% and 99%, respectively. Phase studies show that biological phosphorus uptake occurred in the first aeration period and nitrogen removal took place in the following reaction time by means of partial nitrification and denitrification. The nitrogen balance analysis indicates that denitrification and biomass synthesis contributed to 66% and 34% of TN removed, respectively. 相似文献

Small-scale domestic wastewater treatment using an alternating pumped sequencing batch biofilm reactor system 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
An alternating pumped sequencing batch biofilm reactor (APSBBR) system was developed to treat small-scale domestic wastewater. This laboratory system had two reactor tanks, Reactor 1 and Reactor 2, with two identical plastic biofilm modules in each reactor. Reactor 1 of the APSBBR had five operational phases—fill, anoxic, aerobic, settle and draw. In the aerobic phase, the wastewater was circulated between the two reactor tanks with centrifugal pumps and aeration was mainly achieved through oxygen absorption by microorganisms in the biofilms when they were exposed to the air. This paper details the performance of the APSBBR system in treating synthetic domestic wastewater over 18 months. The effluent from the APSBBR system satisfied the European Wastewater Treatment Directive requirements, with respect to COD, ammonium-nitrogen and suspended solids. The biofilm growth in the two reactor tanks was different due to the difference in substrate loadings and growth conditions. 相似文献

The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process has attracted considerable attention in recent years as an alternative to conventional nitrogen removal technologies. In this study, an innovative hybrid reactor combining fluidized and fixed beds for anammox treatment was developed. The fluidized bed was mechanically stirred and the gaseous product could be rapidly released from the anammox sludge to prevent washout of the sludge caused by floatation. The fixed bed comprising a non-woven biomass carrier could efficiently catch sludge to reduce washout. During the operation, nitrogen loading rates to the reactor were increased to 27.3 kg N/m3/d, with total nitrogen removal efficiencies of 75%. The biomass concentration in the fluidized bed reached 26-g VSS/L. Anammox granules were observed in the reactors, with settling velocities and sludge volumetric index of 27.3 ± 6.5 m/h and 23 mL/g, respectively. Quantification of extracellular polymeric substances revealed the anammox granules contained a significant amount of extracellular proteins. 相似文献

Nitrogen removal in constructed wetland systems 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Since the mid 1990s, constructed wetlands have been increasingly used as a low‐energy ‘green’ technique, in the treatment of wastewater and stormwater, driven by the rising cost of fossil fuels and increasing concern about climate change. Among various applications of these wetlands, a significant area is the removal of nitrogenous pollutants to protect the water environment and to enable effective reclamation and reuse of the wastewater. This paper provides a review of the current state of nitrogen removal technology, focusing on existing types of wetlands, the mechanisms of nitrogen removal, major environmental factors relative to nitrogen removal, and the operation and management of the wetlands. 相似文献

Laboratory scale anoxic/aerobic sequencing batch reactor (A/O SBR) was operated around 15 °C to evaluate the effect of anoxic/aerobic phase fraction (PF) on N2O emission. The ammonia removal exhibited a decrease trend with the increase of PF, while the highest total nitrogen removal was achieved at PF = 0.5. Almost all the N2O was emitted during the aerobic phase, despite of the PF value. However, the net emission of N2O was affected by PF. Under the premise of completely aerobic nitrification, the lowest N2O emission was achieved at PF = 0.5, with a N2O-N conversion rate of 9.8%. At lower PF (PF = 0.2), N2O emission was stimulated by residual nitrite caused by uncompleted denitrification during the anoxic phase. On the other hand, the exhaustion of the easily degradable carbon was the major cause for the high N2O emission at higher PF (PF = 0.5). The N2O emission increased with the decreasing temperature. The time-weighted N2O emission quantity at 15 °C was 2.9 times higher than that at 25 °C. 相似文献

The information of nutrient dynamics is essential for the precise control of effluent quality discharged from biological wastewater treatment processes. However, these variables can usually be determined with a significant time delay. Although the final effluent quality can be analyzed after this delay, it is often too late to make proper adjustments. In this paper, a neural network approach, a software sensor, was proposed for the real-time estimation of nutrient concentrations and overcoming the problem of delayed measurements. In order to improve the neural network performance, a split network structure applied separately for anaerobic and aerobic conditions was employed with dynamic modeling methods such as auto-regressive with exogenous inputs. The proposed methodology was applied to a bench-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for biological nutrient removal. The extrapolation problem of neural networks was possible to be partially overcome with the aid of multiway principal component analysis because of its ability of detecting of abnormal situations which could generate extrapolation. Real-time estimation of PO43−, NO3− and NH4+ concentrations based on neural network was successfully carried out with the simple on-line information of the SBR system only. 相似文献

Recently, it has been reported that the aerobic/extended-idle (AEI) regime can achieve a satisfied biological phosphorus removal (BPR). Although the AEI regime has exhibited some merits, its main drawback that the extended-idle phase (e.g., 210–450 min) is much longer than the anaerobic phase (e.g., 60–120 min) performed in the aerobic/oxic (A/O) regime requires to be addressed. In this study, a new configuration of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with sludge tank halved (STH-SBR) was therefore designed. After stable operation, 96.9 ± 0.5% of total phosphorus was removed in the STH-SBR, which was higher than that in the AEI-SBR (86.9 ± 0.8%) and A/O-SBR (84.7 ± 1.3%). Further investigations showed that the biomass cultured in the STH-SBR contained more polyphosphate accumulating organisms but less glycogen accumulating organisms than that in the AEI-SBR and A/O-SBR. In the STH-SBR, the aerobic glycogen accumulation was lower than that in the A/O-SBR while the average idle phosphorus release was greater than that in the AEI-SBR. Finally, the key enzyme activities in the AEI and A/O regimes were compared for the first time, and the reasons for the AEI regime showing lower exopolyphosphatase and polyphosphate kinase activities were also discussed. 相似文献
