Predation by the phytoseiid mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis, is considered a major threat to the effectiveness of biological control of gorse, Ulex europaeus, using Tetranychus lintearius. To assess this threat and to determine if the impact of P. persimilis on T. lintearius populations is comparable to its impact on T. urticae populations, its development and predator : prey generation time ratios were assessed. The pre-adult mortality and development time of two populations of P. persimilis fed on two diets, T. urticae and T. lintearius, were determined at two temperatures, 14 and 24°C. There were no significant differences in either mortality or development time between the two populations of P. persimilis at these temperatures. There is therefore no evidence that the two tested populations of P. persimilis are behaving as different strains. Similarly, diet had no significant effect on either mortality or development time at these temperatures. At 14°C the mortality of P. persimilis was significantly higher and development was significantly longer than at 24°C. Using pre-adult development as a surrogate for generation times, predator : prey generation time ratios were calculated between P. persimilis and both T. urticae and T. lintearius using data from this and other studies. The predator : prey generation time ratios between P. persimilis and T. lintearius were lower than those between P. persimilis and T. urticae. These results indicate that the impact of P. persimilis on T. lintearius populations is likely to be comparable to its impact on T. urticae populations. This provides further evidence that predation by P. persimilis is having a deleterious effect on T. lintearius populations and therefore reducing its effectiveness as a biological control agent for gorse.  相似文献

The host range ofTetranychus lintearius was examined experimentally to determine if the mite could be safely introduced into New Zealand for the biological control of gorse,Ulex europaeus (Leguminosae: Genisteae). The rationale for choosing test plants was the same as that employed for testing insect species as biological control agents. Outdoors, mite colonies could be transferred successfully from gorse plant to gorse plant, but could not re-establish on any of 39 other plant species progeny to develop, was measured on 58 plant species other than gorse. Apart fromUlex europaeus andU. minor, development was completed only onPhaseolus vulgaris andGlycine max. Further experiments using 22 bean cultivars showed that mites could not complete a second generation on detached leaf cultures, could not form permanent colonies on potted plants in the glasshouse, and remanned only a short time when transferred to bean plants in the field. Tetranychus lintearius has never been recorded from any plant butUlex species. This fact, coupled with the results of host-range testing, suggests that the mite is sufficiently host-specific to be safely used as a biological control agent for gorse in New Zealand.  相似文献

There are many examples of cryptic species that have been identified through DNA‐barcoding or other genetic techniques. There are, however, very few confirmations of cryptic species being reproductively isolated. This study presents one of the few cases of cryptic species that has been confirmed to be reproductively isolated and therefore true species according to the biological species concept. The cryptic species are of special interest because they were discovered within biological control agent populations. Two geographically isolated populations of Eccritotarsus catarinensis (Carvalho) [Hemiptera: Miridae], a biological control agent for the invasive aquatic macrophyte, water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms [Pontederiaceae], in South Africa, were sampled from the native range of the species in South America. Morphological characteristics indicated that both populations were the same species according to the current taxonomy, but subsequent DNA analysis and breeding experiments revealed that the two populations are reproductively isolated. Crossbreeding experiments resulted in very few hybrid offspring when individuals were forced to interbreed with individuals of the other population, and no hybrid offspring were recorded when a choice of mate from either population was offered. The data indicate that the two populations are cryptic species that are reproductively incompatible. Subtle but reliable diagnostic characteristics were then identified to distinguish between the two species which would have been considered intraspecific variation without the data from the genetics and interbreeding experiments. These findings suggest that all consignments of biological control agents from allopatric populations should be screened for cryptic species using genetic techniques and that the importation of multiple consignments of the same species for biological control should be conducted with caution.  相似文献

Altica carduorumandAltica cirsicolaare two species of leaf-feeding beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) which appear to be morphologically indistinguishable and reportedly hybridize in the laboratory. A European population ofA. carduorumwas previously screened for host-plant specificity and released in North America for the control of Canada thistle,Cirsium arvense.A population ofA. cirsicolafrom China is currently being considered as a biocontrol agent forC. arvenseand, as a different beetle species, must be screened using host-specificity tests similar to those used forA. carduorum.IfA. carduorumandA. cirsicolaare, in fact, one species, the screening requirements forA. cirsicolacould be significantly reduced. Hence, we investigated the taxonomic relationship betweenA. carduorumandA. cirsicolausing morphometric analyses, hybridization experiments, and DNA fingerprinting using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Discriminant function analyses indicate thatA. carduorumandA. cirsicolacannot be reliably distinguished by their morphologies, and interspecific matings produce fertile F1offspring. However, because interspecific matings produce significantly fewer offspring than intraspecific matings, and because of clear differences in their DNA profiles, we conclude thatA. carduorumandA. cirsicolaare separate species. This study serves to highlight the value of genetic analyses in taxonomic studies and their role in biological control programs.  相似文献

Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot successfully controlledTetranychus urticae Koch on rose hedges in an integrated mite control programme in two unheated plastic-covered tunnels at Cleveland in southern Queensland. Mite populations were monitored fortnightly for nearly three years in one tunnel and for two years in a second. Once established,P. persimilis quickly suppressedT. urticae and then persisted. A relatively stable, long-term, low-level interaction developed between the two species under normal commercial conditions. In one tunnel, the production (upper) level of the four rose hedges contained fewer mites of both species per compound leaf (1.71 of all stages ofT. urticae, 0.38 motiles; 0.25 of all stages ofP. persimilis, 0.12 motiles) than the maintenance (lower) layer (2.02 of all stages ofT. urticae, 0.75 motiles; 0.35 of all stages ofP. persimilis, 0.21 motiles). On 68% of sampling occasions, 10% or less of compound leaves in the production layer were infested withT. urticae (all stages including eggs) and control was excellent throughout the 30-month period afterP. persimilis was established, there being no economic losses. In the second tunnel, there was no significant difference between mite numbers in the production and maintenance layers of the two hedges examined. The overall mean number of all stages ofT. urticae per compound leaf was 3.2 (1.45 motiles), and ofP. persimilis 0.46 (0.25 motiles). Control here was slightly less effective than in the first tunnel, but was still satisfactory, with 10% or less of leaves being infested on 45.5% of sampling occasions (20% or less on 66% of sampling occasions) withT. urticae (all stages including eggs).Phytoseiulus persimilis was not reintroduced or redistributed during the course of the observations. An auxiliary miticide (clofentezine) was applied on only one occasion to selected areas in the second tunnel. The influence of high temperatures on control byP. persimilis is discussed.  相似文献

The suitability ofSesamia calamistisHampson andBusseola fusca(Fuller) for the development of two geographical populations ofCotesia sesamiae(Cameron) was examined in the laboratory. One population of the parasitoid was collected from the coast of Kenya and the other from the inland. Both populations of the parasitoid could develop onS. calamistis.OnB. fusca,the inland population ofC. sesamiaewas able to develop, while the population from the coastal area of Kenya was encapsulated. Mating studies revealed that the two parasitoid populations were partially reproductively isolated. Unidirectional incompatibility, possibly caused by theWolbachiainfection, was observed when males from the infected coastal population were mated with females from the uninfected inland population.  相似文献

Gene frequencies, estimated by electrophoretical analysis, were compared between sympatric populations of ninespine sticklebacks,Pungitius pungitius, P. tymensis andP. sinensis, in Hokkaido, Japan. The loci examined wereLdh- E,Sod, Pgm andMp. Consequently, significant differences were detected betweenP. tymensis and other species in all rivers examined. This result strongly suggests thatP. tymensis is reproductively isolated from the other species even when they coexist, although a few natural hybrids betweenP. pungitius andP. tymensis were found through its heterozygosity in esterase isozyme patterns and inPgm. On the other hand, no significant difference was detected betweenP. pungitius andP. sinensis populations in the Biwase River of eastern Hokkaido. Therefore, it is suggested that they possibly belong to a single interbreeding population.  相似文献

Interspecific mating between the two-spotted spider mite,Tetranychus urticae Koch, and the Banks grass mite,Oligonychus pratensis (Banks), was documented using laboratory populations. The incidence of mating betweenT. urticae males andO. pratensis females was 26.0%, while that for the reciprocal mating was 18.8%. The incidence of mating was affected by both male and female species. Such matings may have several important ecological consequences. Interspecific matings resulted in all-male progenies. Thus, progeny sex ratios may be distorted by misdirected mating behavior. In addition, heterospecific mating resulted in lower fecundity than conspecific matings in the two-spotted spider mite, although not in the Banks grass mite. Aerial dispersal behavior of the two-spotted spider mite was also affected. Under crowded conditions and deteriorating resource quality, female mites exhibit an aerial dispersal posture that helps them to become airborne, and allows them to disperse long distances. Forty-two percent ofT. urticae females that mated with conspecific males exhibited this dispersal behavior, compared to only 3.6% for virgin females. The incidence of aerial dispersal behavior for females that mated with heterospecific males was intermediate (27.3%). The effects of these behavioral alterations on male and female fitness may depend on the population structure and resource distribution.  相似文献

The commercially available strains of Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, the biological control agent of Tetranychus urticae Koch, perform poorly in the Western Mediterranean, probably because they are not well adapted to local climatic conditions. For that reason, efforts are being focused on the development of a biological control programme using native phytoseiid mites. Four species of red spider mites can be found in vegetable crops in eastern Spain: T. urticae, Tetranychus turkestani Ugarov and Nikolski, Tetranychus ludeni Zacher and the recently introduced Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard. To evaluate their potential role as biological control agents, the present study evaluates the life-history of local populations of Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) and P. persimilis when fed on T. urticae, T. turkestani, T. evansi, and T. ludeni in the laboratory. Results indicate that N. californicus and P. persimilis are able to feed and complete their development on the four tested red spider mite species. The predators may exhibit a particularly high capacity for population increase when fed on T. urticae, T. turkestani, and T. ludeni, thus may be able to provide effective control of these species in the field. When fed T. evansi, however, predator performance was poor; significant increase in development and preoviposition times, and a reduction in oviposition period and fecundity were recorded. The resultant low capacity for population growth suggests poor ability of the two tested predators to suppress T. evansi populations on commercial crops. It is unlikely therefore that P. persimilis and N. californicus, now being widely used to control T. urticae in greenhouse crops in Central Europe, will be able to halt any spread of T. evansi to greenhouse crops in temperate areas.  相似文献

This study aimed to monitor the present and future developments of the resistance of Tetranychus urticae Koch to fenpyroximate and pyridaben, using the relationship of the LC50 and slope of the concentration-mortality line in a probit model, for the provision of reliable resistance management tactics. Tetranychus urticae populations were collected from 16 commercial greenhouses, where various crops were cultivated, as well as from 10 apple orchards throughout Korea. The resistance to fenpyroximate and pyridaben of each population was estimated by calculating the median lethal concentration (LC50), resistance ratio (RR) and slope of the concentration-mortality regression. Most of the greenhouse populations exhibited moderate levels of resistance, whereas the apple orchard populations showed only low levels, indicating that T. urticae populations in greenhouses were more strongly selected than those in apple orchards. Four population groups were established based on either the habitats (greenhouse and apple orchard) or acaricides (fenpyroximate and pyridaben). To test the hypothesis, “the slope is greatest at low and high levels of resistance,” the slopes were regressed as a function of the LC50, and fitted to a polynomial regression. The polynomial regression model explained this relationship well for the four population groups (p < 0.05), indicating that the development of resistance toward fenpyroximate or pyridaben was consistent with the gradient. A laboratory selection study agreed with the results from both acaricide field populations. These results suggest that the gradient was a good indicator of the susceptibility of T. urticae to genetic variations, which was related to the LC50. The application of these findings is also discussed in relation to the resistance management of T. urticae.  相似文献

Relationships amongCalamagrostis longiseta var.longiseta, C.l. var.longe-aristata andC. fauriei, which are principally at the 2n=28 chromosome level, were studied mainly on the basis of population samples. The populations comprised (1) “pure” populations of each ofC.l. longiseta, C.l. longe-aristata andC. fauriei and (2) populations showing a gradation fromC.l. longiseta toC. fauriei via the intermediateC.l. longearistata and fromC.l. longiseta toC.l. longe-aristata. Hybridization betweenC.l. longiseta andC. fauriei was estimated to be ultimately related to the geneses of the population structures detected, and it was concluded thatC.l. longe-aristata must be of hybrid origin betweenC.l. longiseta andC. fauriei. Populations showing a gradation fromC.l. longiseta toC.l. longe-aristata were regarded to have been brought about by the extinction ofC. fauriei from the hybridizing population coupled with the change of environments and also by the secondary contact betweenC.l. longiseta and plants ofC.l. longe-aristata migrating from the area that produced it. No significant reduction of pollen fertility and seed productivity was found inC.l. longe-aristata. Based on the results of population analyses, the delimitation of the taxa concerned was made clearer. The examination of herbarium specimens showed that the range ofC.l. longe-aristata considerably exceeds the overlapping area of the present ranges ofC.l. longiseta andC. fauriei. The three taxa were deviated ecologically, and “pure” populations ofC.l. longe-aristata were found on several damp subalpine fields in central and northern Honshu that seemed to represent the most suitable niche for this taxon. It was estimated thatC.l. longe-aristata would evolve into a new good species if the future organism-environment interactions are favorable for it.  相似文献

The effectiveness of the predatory mite, Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot (Acari: Phytoseidae), as a suppressive agent of the twospotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), was evaluated on greenhouse ivy geraniums at predator:prey release ratios of 1:60, 1:20, and 1:4. Releases at each predator:prey ratio were made at moderate and high T. urticae densities to determine if initial pest population size influenced the suppressive ability of the predator. At ratios of 1:4 and 1:20, P. persimilis significantly reduced T. urticae populations 1 week after release and kept them at low levels thereafter. Plant damage also was significantly reduced at these densities. After 4 weeks, the P. persimilis that were released at a ratio of 1:4 consistently reduced T. urticae populations from densities as high as 30 T. urticae per leaf to fewer than 0.6 per leaf. We found no interaction between release ratio and T. urticae density, indicating that predator effectiveness remains constant, at least within the range of T. urticae densities used. Our work demonstrates the potential of P. persimilis to provide effective control of T. urticae on a greenhouse-grown floricultural crop at a moderately low predator:prey ratio (1:20) and over a range of initial pest densities. However, we recommend that P. persimilis be released at a ratio of 1:4 for greatest reliability and successful control of T. urticae on ivy geraniums.  相似文献

Trapa natansis an aquatic plant native to the Old World. In the late 1880s this plant was found to be naturalized in the eastern United States where it has become an important weed. To evaluate the potential of biological control to reduce this weed, surveys for natural enemies ofTrapaspp. were made in Northeast Asia and Europe. In addition, populations ofTrapa japonicain South Korea were monitored for one season to evaluate the occurrence and impact of insect natural enemies. Among the insects found, the leaf beetleGalerucella birmanicawas the most common and damaging species in Asia. It can cause complete defoliation of whole populations of plants. Nymphuline pyralid moths were also common and at times damaging. Both the beetle and the moths feed and develop on unrelated plants and so have no potential as biological control agents ofT. natansin North America. TwoNanophyesweevils were found in Asia which feed in petiole floats of the leaves. They are thought to be specific toTrapabut were not observed to be damaging. Low level populations of polyphagous Homoptera were common. Chironomid midges were also frequently associated with the plants, but for the most part were filter feeders, not herbivores. The greatest impact on the monitored plants in South Korea was by the leaf beetleG. birmanicawhich defoliated most of the plants, causing the mats of plants to sink. In Europe, a similar and related insect fauna was found, but none of the insects was very damaging to the plants. One Italian weevil,Bagous rufimanus,feeds within the fruit stems and might be more damaging at higher than observed population levels. Some diseases were seen on some plants in both regions. European populations ofT. natanshave declined significantly, stimulating conservation efforts. Literature records ofTrapainsects from warm areas are presented. These could be of interest ifT. natansspreads into warmer areas of North America.  相似文献

In recent years, grape growers in California reported failures of acaricides against Tetranychus pacificus McGregor. We collected T. pacificus populations from four vineyards and tested them for resistance to bifenazate, propargite and pyridaben. In addition, we sequenced part of the cytochrome b gene of bifenazate-resistant and -susceptible T. pacificus to test for the presence of mutations reported to confer resistance to the congeneric T. urticae. None of the mutations conferring resistance to bifenazate in T. urticae were present in resistant T. pacificus. Resistance levels ranged from full susceptibility to statistically significant 11-fold resistance to pyridaben, sevenfold resistance to bifenazate and fourfold resistance to propargite compared to a susceptible population. Despite the relatively low levels of resistance detected, we estimated that under the conditions of our study the highest field rates of bifenazate and pyridaben application would cause less than 58 and 66% mortality of adult females in the most resistant populations, respectively. In contrast, field rates of propargite application would cause close to 100% mortality in the least susceptible population. These results highlight a potential link between resistance development and reduced field effectiveness for bifenazate and pyridaben. Finally, T. pacificus may be more tolerant to bifenazate and propargite than T. urticae, since the LC50 values for the susceptible population of T. pacificus were several times higher than LC50’s reported for susceptible T. urticae.  相似文献

Analyses were made of the allozyme frequencies of sympatric populations of the capitulum weevils L. latus Herbst and Larinus cyarae F. in Greece. It was found that the two taxa are genetically isolated and that they can therefore be considered as separate species. This complemented ecological data showing separation of the L. latus and L. cynarae populations by their choice of Onopordum illyricum L. and Cynara cardunculus, respectively, as hosts. Onopordum spp. are serious weed problems in Australia while Cynara contains several crop plants. L. latus is a potential biological control agent of Onopordum spp., but its use had been compromised by the uncertainty of the taxonomic distinctness from L. cynarae, biotypes of which are pests of artichoke Cynara scolymus L. Clarification of its taxonomic status lifts these reservations and clears the way for the introduction of L. latus into Australia for the biological control of Onopordum thistles.  相似文献

Platphalonidia mystica (Razowski &; Becker) has been studied as a potential biological control agent against parthenium weed (Parthenium hysterophorus L.). During host specificity testing, larval feeding damage occurred on sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) and to a lesser extent onDahlia sp., but risk of damage to sunflower crops under field conditions is considered negligible. In view of the very great problem thatP. hysterophorus is causing, and the threat of its continued southward spread into Southern Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, field release ofP. mystica was authorised and commenced in Queensland in late 1992.  相似文献

Field trials were carried out in upstate New York in 1990, 1992, 1993, and 1994 and in Chile in 1992–1993 and 1993–1994 in order to evaluate the ability of various strains ofTrichodermaspp. to control bunch rot of grape, to assess the compatibility and possible additive effects of selected biocontrol fungi and dicarboximide fungicides, and to determine factors affecting biocontrol efficacy. In 1990, three strains ofTrichodermaspp. were evaluated for their biocontrol ability, and all provided significant control ofBotrytis cinerea.As few as two late applications of the biocontrol fungi were nearly as effective as up to five applications throughout bloom and fruit development. Trials in New York in 1992 and in Chile in 1992–1993 indicated thatTrichoderma harzianumcould replace some applications of iprodione or vinclozolin with little reduction in efficacy. In New York in 1993, we found that applications ofT. harzianumat bloom and early fruit development followed by a tank-mix application ofT. harzianumand half rates of iprodione gave extremely effective control of bunch rot. In 1994, less effective control was obtained than in earlier years. Addition of a nutritive adhesive (Pelgel, a mixture of carboxymethyl cellulose and gum arabic) applied with the biocontrol agent tended to improve results. Thus, biological control of bunch rot of grape withT. harzianumcan be an effective method of management of this disease.  相似文献

The biological function ofLentinula edodes in a myco-heterotrophic orchid,Erythrorchis ochobiensis was examined, using one local variant each from Japan (JPN), Papua New Guinea (PNG) and New Zealand (NZ). All variants induced seed germination: PNG and NZ isolates were effective at 25°C and JPN isolate showed the highest germination rate at 30°C. Germinated seeds developed into plants and formed normal endomycorrhizas. Hence, it is concluded thatL. edodes has a perfect symbiotic potential withE. ochobiensis, though it has not been observed in the root of the orchid in the field.  相似文献

Dispersal and gene flow of pesticide resistance traits in phytoseiid and tetranychid mites are discussed relative to their biologies and resistance management. The focus is on deciduous fruit-tree crops whereTyphlodromus pyri Scheuten andMetaseiulus occidentalis (Nesbitt) can effectively control spider mite pests. Oregon populations ofM. occidentalis were more dispersive thanT. pyri, as evidenced by movement to small apple trees placed inside and outside of commercial apple orchards. This difference was corroborated by the spatial distributions of organophosphate resistance in populations from sprayed orchards and nearby unsprayed habitats:T. pyri showed patchy, local patterns of resistance whileM. occidentalis showed more regional, homogeneous trends. Gene flow among populations was estimated from allozymic variation ofT. pyri. Intra- and inter-population genetic variation was high enough to prevent population differentiation. Thus, allozymic estimates of gene flow were higher than that indicated by pesticide resistance patterns.Dispersal inTetranychus urticae Koch is also discussed relative to resistance evolution. Immigration of resistant phenotypes from crops or other sprayed habitats can increase the frequency of resistance. Immigration of susceptible individuals from surrounding unsprayed habitat into a sprayed crop can slow resistance or lead to its reversion, depending on the level of gene flow between populations. Dispersal within crops can have the same effect if susceptibles come from a refuge. In pears, immigration of susceptibleT. urticae from nearby habitat and groundcover aided in reversion of organotin resistance. Experiments on resistance management tactics forT. urticae are discussed.  相似文献
