Guilds of Aculeate solitary wasps and bees that nest in preexisting cavities in wood are important components of terrestrial ecosystems because they engage in several ecological interactions (e.g. predation and pollination) with other species of plants and animals. Spatial and temporal variations in richness and abundance of solitary wasps and bees can be related to changes in environmental structure and in the diversity of other groups of organisms. The nesting period of these Aculeata is their most critical life cycle stage. Females of solitary wasp and bee species invest relatively more time constructing and provisioning their nests than do females of social species. Differently from species that nest in the soil or construct exposed nests, the main factors affecting the reproductive success of solitary species nesting in preexisting wood holes are still unknown. Our objective is to provide an overview of the role of proximate causes of nesting failure or success among solitary wasps and bees (Aculeata), for designing effective conservation and management strategies for these Hymenoptera. 相似文献

Temporal variation of solitary wasps and bees, nesting frequency, mortality, and parasitism were recorded from a remanent forest in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil. Wasps and bees were collected in trap-nests placed in areas with 25, 100, and 400 m2, from February to November 2004. The 137 trap-nests collected contained 11 species of wasps and bees. Wasps occupied most nests (75%). Occupation peaks occurred in March (25%) and September (26%); in June, the lowest occupation (2%) was observed. Except for Trypoxylon (Trypargilum) lactitarse Saussure, no significant correlation was found between number of occupied nests, and temperature and rainfall means. In the nests, 48% of the immature specimens died; 13% of the nests were parasitized. Total death and parasitism rates of wasps and bees differed significantly. 相似文献

Cavity-nesting bees and wasps (Hymenoptera: Aculeata) have been showed to be suitable models to investigate the effects of forest fragmentation and human land use. Those studies are particularly pertinent when considering fragmented ecosystems such as the Atlantic semi-deciduous forest in Brazil. We investigated the changes in composition, nest abundance, and mortality of cavity-nesting bees and wasps over edge-center forest fragment immersed in a matrix of agricultural lands in southeastern Brazil. Trap-nests (bamboo canes and cardboard tubes) were set in nine sampling stations in three different zones in the study site: three sampling stations at the forest edge; three at 250 m away from the edge and another three at 500 m away from the edge. Nests were monitored monthly for 2 years (from June 2011 to May 2013). A total of 942 nests (706 built by 16 bee species; 236 from 18 wasp species) were collected in the fragment. A significant change over gradient edge-center was observed on the parameters analyzed. The Non-metric Multidimensional Scale analysis showed that 72% of the species (host and natural enemies) that present more than ten records were associated with the forest edge. Furthermore, the highest values of the abundance of nests, parasitism, and mortality were recorded in the edge. In spite of being surrounded by farmlands, the fragment hosts a great diversity of trap-nesting wasp and bee species. Our findings demonstrate that forest edges are important habitats to maintain communities of cavity-nesting bees and wasps. 相似文献

This study was carried out at the Parque Municipal das Araucárias, in the municipality of Guarapuava, state of Paraná, southern Brazil. The aims of the present study were to access the spectrum of wasp species inhabiting trap-nests in three habitats, to record their richness and diversity and elucidate the process responsible for their composition and abundance and to investigate if there is difference in their diversity between Brazilian tropical and subtropical regions. A total of 1097 nests, belonging to 21 species of solitary wasps, were collected. Of these, nine belonged to the family Vespidae (42.86%), six to Pompilidae (28.57%), four to Crabronidae (19.05%) and two to Sphecidae (9.52%). Crabronidae was the most abundant family in the samplings, with a total of 927 collected nests (84.3%). The environment that presented the greatest species diversity, richness and evenness was the grassland areas. Using the Bray–Curtis coefficient (beta diversity), the greatest similarity, in relation to species abundance, occurred between swamp and grasslands. In contrast, the araucaria forest was the habitat with the greatest dissimilarity, a result corroborated by the correspondence analysis. 相似文献

Evidence-based conservation allows the evaluation of both the collateral benefits and the drawbacks of a wide range of human activities, like quarrying. In this study, the community structure of bees and wasps (Hymenoptera:Apocrita) in Central European sandpits was investigated, focusing on the changes caused by quarrying cessation and technical reclamation, as well as on the changes caused by spontaneous succession leading to the increased availability of food resources but also to the loss of the number and size of available bare sand patches. The bees and wasps demonstrated an exceptional ability to colonize the newly emerging sand quarrying areas, and to survive in them unless these were quarried as intensively as to not allow the development of any early successional vegetation. Both active and closed sandpits were found to serve as important regional refuges for the persistence of many rare species. In total, 221 species were detected, 53 of those were red-listed, with two species thought to be regionally extinct. Typically, active quarrying was associated with the presence of Bembecinus tridens, Halictus subauratus, H. maculatus, and Andrena nigroaenea. The list of the species of conservation interest is provided, and so is the detailed analysis of the life-history traits of the species in relation to the presence of bare sand patches, vegetation cover, quarrying intensity, and time elapsed since the formation of each artificial habitat patch. Sandpits as refuges for xerothermophilous and psammophilous hymenopterans are usually completely and irreversibly lost if the current legislature enforcing the technical reclamation over spontaneous or assisted succession is applied in all or most of the post-mining areas. 相似文献

Anthropogenic habitats, which are frequently occupied by otherwise endangered species of the open landscape, suffer from a lack of sustainability. Here, we analyzed one of the few sustainable anthropogenic habitats, roadside verges. We hypothesized that steppe-like habitats at upper parts of south-exposed slopes of roadside verges may serve as the only strongholds of threatened species ousted from the surrounding intensively cultivated landscape, with direct consequences for plant pollination and other ecosystem services. We examined bees and wasps alongside Highway 7 constructed 14–28 years ago in the northwestern Czech Republic. The sampling sites were located 4–17 m from paved road with traffic intensity of 9523 to 38,688 vehicles × 24 h?1, and they consisted of steppe-like habitats with patches of bare soil (sand, loess and claystone) that formed and were maintained spontaneously. The sites were not connected to any permanent grasslands or forests, and they were surrounded mostly by arable fields. We found 139 species of herbs (nine threatened) in vegetation surveys along transects. We identified 164 species of bees and wasps, with a dominance of 0.052 and a Fisher’s alpha of 45.0; 32 species were threatened, including a second Czech record of Chrysis gribodoi spilota and four critically endangered species (Andrena florivaga, Halictus scabiosae, Sphecodes spinulosus and Nanoclavelia leucoptera). The captured specimens consisted of a higher number of loess specialists and other steppe species compared to specimens associated with other anthropogenic habitats that provide bare ground (sand pits and ash deposits). In conclusion, the formation of spontaneously maintained steppe-like habitats at roadside verges should be considered to be an appropriate tool supporting the biodiversity in the highly cultivated landscape of central Europe. 相似文献

To account for differences in occurrence of social behavior in different lineages of bees, Michener (1985) hypothesized that ground nests are more easily located by parasites than are twig nests. In the former case parasites search in two dimensions, while in the latter they search in three-dimensional space. One prediction derived from this hypothesis is that ground nests will have higher rates of parasitism than twig nests. A survey of published reports on rates of cell parasitism for 92 species of nesting bees and wasps (Apoidea) shows no significant differences in mean parasitism rates between these two classes of nests. The analyses were repeated at the generic level (N=44), yielding the same pattern. These data may be biased due to phylogenetic effects. Paired comparisons (n=11 pairs) of related taxa that differ in nest site show that ground-nesting taxa more often have higher rates of parasitism than twig-nesters. The use of artificial trap-nests to study twig-nesters significantly enhances the success rate of parasites. This bias, as well as several other limitations, suggests that experimental studies of the host-searching capabilities of parasites and predators may be more efficacious than such comparative tests. 相似文献

Wasps and bees are important components of flower visitor guilds in the Neotropical region. The abundance of social wasps and bees, collected during flower visits, was used to calculate niche breadth and niche overlap indices, in order to characterize the utilization of the floral resources by those insects. Samples were taken monthly, for 13 months (156h), by two collectors which captured the specimens on flowers using entomological nets, while walking along a way in an area of caatinga at Itatim, State of Bahia, Brazil. Wasps and bees heavily visited a few sources of floral resources, but the most visited plants by each group were different, and few plant species were important for both groups, resulting in low niche overlap between bees and wasps. The niche overlap among wasp species was generally higher than among bee species. The general overlap, which takes into consideration all species together was low (< 30%). 相似文献

The construction of nests to rear offspring is restricted to vertebrates and few insect taxa, such as termites, wasps, and bees. Among bees, species of the family Megachilidae are characterized by a particularly high diversity in nest construction behaviour. Many megachilid bees nest in excavated burrows in the ground, others place their brood cells in a variety of above‐ground cavities or attach them to the surface of a substrate, and yet others have adopted a kleptoparasitic habit. Evolutionary transitions between the different nesting sites and between conventional nesting and kleptoparasitism in bees are poorly understood. In the present study, we traced the evolution of nesting site selection and kleptoparasitism in the Annosmia–Hoplitis group (Osmiini), which displays an exceptionally high diversity in nesting behaviour. We found that the evolution of nesting behaviour proceeded unidirectionally from nesting in excavated burrows in the ground to nesting in rock depressions and cavities, followed by the colonization of snail shells and insect borings in dead wood or hollow stems. Kleptoparasitism evolved once and the kleptoparasitic species have derived from the same lineage as their hosts. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 108 , 349–360. 相似文献

Four alien, host-alternating cynipid gall wasps are established in the British Isles: Andricus kollari, A. lignicola, A. quercuscalicis and A. corruptrix. Their current distributions divide Britain into four zones; all four invaders are present in the south and south-east of Britain, whereas only A. kollari is present in the far north of Scotland. The rank order, according to how far north the distributions of the four invading cynipid species reach, is: A. corruptrix→ A. quercuscalicis→ A. lignicola→ A. kollari. The life cycles of all four cynipid species involve a sexual generation in spring on Quercus cerris, and an agamic generation in autumn on Q. robur. Here we studied the parasitoid attack by four pteromalid species on the sexual generations of the invaders. We collected and reared the galls of all four species at eight sites from the south to the north of the country (two sites per zone). The geographical locations of the sites reflect the invasion history and thus the residence time of the alien species in the four zones. At each site we measured the densities of all host galls on Q. cerris and of both obligatory host-tree species. We also took a series of measures, such as host-tree density and mean host-tree size, to further characterize the tree stands. These measures are referred to as local parameters. Host densities varied between sites and between years. In A. kollari, galling rates were highest in the middle of the country (zone 2) in 1994, whereas in 1995 they increased from the south to the north. In A. lignicola, galling rates in both years were lowest at the sites in zone 3 (closest to its distribution boundary). In A. quercuscalicis, galling rates were found to be lowest at the site most to the north-west in both years, again the one furthest away from the area where this species was first recorded. Mortality caused by parasitoid attack differed from less than 10% to as high as 70% and varied between host species, sites and years. In four out of six cases the historical/regional variables (north/south and east/west) correlated significantly with parasitoid attack rates that were characteristically lowest at sites close to the distribution boundaries. Of the local factors, we found parasitoid attack rates correlated negatively in one case with host density, whereas they correlated positively in four cases with the density of alternative hosts of the parasitoids. In one of the models the local density of Q. cerris trees correlated negatively with parasitoid attack on A. quercuscalicis. For all three host species the terms retained in the minimal adequate models obtained for 1994 and 1995 differed, which might indicate that these communities of native parasitoids and invading host have not yet settled in any definite structure. 相似文献

Surveying the diversity of stinging wasps (Hymenoptera: Aculeata) provides an important information base to assist in biodiversity conservation and the management of forest reserves, as wasps depend on and maintain the population balance of several other groups of insects. In accordance, this paper presents an altitudinal survey of wasps (Hymenoptera, Aculeata, Vespidae) in Itatiaia National Park, Brazil, which is a protected area covered by Atlantic Forest in a mountainous landscape, with altitudes ranging between 540 and 2791 metres above sea level. Six altitudinal zones were sampled with entomological net, and the abundance and diversity of the species were indicated by zones. Field sampling took 288 h of discontinuous activity, which was randomly conducted from December 2012 to December 2013. A total of 398 individuals belonging to 29 species and two subfamilies (Eumeninae and Polistinae) were sampled. Eight species are new records for the state of Rio de Janeiro. We found a monotonic decrease in wasp diversity in relation to altitude, and the number of captured individuals differed significantly between the low and high altitudes. 相似文献

Although inter-individual diet variation is common in predatory wasp populations, the factors accounting for such variation are still largely unknown. Here, we asked if paired diet dissimilarity in three species of digger wasps correlates with morphological distance and inter-nest distance, two factors previously linked to diet partitioning in vertebrates. Results sharply differed among species and generations. All sampled populations showed significant inter-individual diet variation for prey taxa, but only in half of the cases for prey size. In one generation of two species [Bembix zonata Klug and Stizus continuus (Klug)], similar-sized wasps had similar prey taxonomic spectra (and for S. continuus also similar prey size spectra), a phenomenon which probably reduces intra-specific competition. In addition, B. zonata females nesting closer to each other had more similar prey taxonomic spectra, suggesting that distant females probably hunt on different patches that harbour different prey species. For the females of a further species (Bembix merceti Parker), pairwise size difference and inter-nest distance did not affect prey dissimilarity. Both morphological distance and inter-nest distance are potentially important in shaping the overlap of individual resource use in wasps, though probably only in certain conditions such as a highly clumped distribution of nests and size-related constraints on prey selection. 相似文献

The following trends in oligomerization of the male and female antennae in Tetrastichinae were determined. (1) Reduction (shortening) of the basal segment of the funicle. (2) Reduction (shortening) of the middle segments of the funicle (not recorded in chalcids before). (3) Loss of homonomy by the funicle. (4) Fusion of the claval segments. (5) Reduction (shortening) of the apical claval segment. (6) Incorporation of the apical funicular segment into the clava (not recorded in eulophids before). Sex dimorphism in the antenna structure apparently results from different rates of the evolution of parts of antennae in males and females, in particular from different rates of oligomerization and appearance of novel structures in the male antennae. 相似文献

Abstract The species of Dirhinini from the Indian Subcontinent are revised and a key given to the ten recognized species. These are classified in one genus, Dirhinus Dalman, with two subgenera. Four new species, claviger, deplanatus, pilifer and altispina , are described and seventeen new synonyms (sixteen specific, one generic) proposed. All pertinent biological data are critically reviewed, all host records being from Diptera, especially synanthropic muscoid flies, noxious fruitflies and tachinids. Observations are made on geographic distributions, two species being found to extend from Africa to the Hawaiian Islands. 相似文献

Bembix is a cosmopolitan genus with more than 300 species distributed all over the world. The females of these wasps dig burrows in the ground and hunt for flies to feed their larvae. Current knowledge of the nesting behaviour of most Palaearctic species (around 50) is limited. In this study, we provide data on the nest structure, nesting activity, natural enemies and prey captured by three Bembix sand wasps present on the Iberian Peninsula: B. zonata, B. flavescens bolivari and B. merceti. We also analyze the prey spectrum of the three species, comparing our data with those available from previous studies. B. zonata exhibits the greatest selectivity index (and the narrowest niche width), capturing mainly Syrphidae to provision its nests. B. merceti shows the greatest niche width in comparison with the other two species. The inter-annual differences in the diet of B. merceti are important and are probably due to the ability of this wasp to change from one prey resource to another, depending on its availability. 相似文献

Orchid or euglossine bees are conspicuous Hymenoptera of the Neotropics, where they pollinate numerous plants, including orchids. Allozyme-based analyses have suggested that their populations suffer from inbreeding, as evidenced by so-called diploid male production. We have developed nine polymorphic microsatellite loci for the widespread Euglossa annectans, with observed heterozygosities ranging from 0.143 to 0.952 and between 2 and 9 alleles per species. These loci will be useful for analysis of relatedness, population genetic structure and diploid male production in this and related species. 相似文献

The protein content of tissues in cynipid galls (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae): Similarities between cynipid galls and seeds 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Cynipid galls are examples of induced plant development, where the gall inducer is in control of cell differentiation and morphogenesis of a new plant organ. This study concentrates on the tissues of the larval chamber common to all cynipid galls. The protein content of the inner gall tissue was compared to that of non‐gall plant tissues. We investigated three oak and two rose galls and their respective host plants. Total protein signatures of inner gall tissues were different from those of non‐gall plant tissues, and among the five galls. N‐terminal sequences were obtained for two abundant proteins from the inner gall tissues of D. spinosa and A. quercuscalicis, which were common to all galls, at 62 and 43 kDa. Database queries suggest the 62 kDa protein to be homologous to a protein disulphide isomerase (PDI), and the 43 kDa protein to be homologous to NAD‐dependent formate dehydrogenase (FDH). A naturally biotinylated protein was detected at 33 kDa during Western analyses with streptavidin. Western analyses revealed the presence of the biotinylated protein and PDI in the inner gall tissues of all five galls, while FDH was only detected in A. quercuscalicis and A. fecundator. PDI was also common to all non‐gall tissues, while FDH was not detected in non‐gall tissues, and the biotinylated protein was only detected in seeds. The proteins identified in the inner gall tissue suggest that (a) inner gall tissues in some galls are under respiratory stress, and (b) cynipid gall formation might involve the ectopic expression of seed‐specific proteins. 相似文献
