Interspecific competition between parasitoid larvae may influence the size, structure, and stability of the population, leading to a reduction in total parasitism and thus restricting the pest control. Aphidius ervi (Haliday) and Praon volucre (Haliday) are endoparasitoids that possess a wide host range and present considerable potential for the biological control of the aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas). The larval competition between A. ervi and P. volucre, and the possible intrinsic competitive superiority of one of the parasitoids in M. euphorbiae, have been studied. In single parasitism experiments, mated parasitoid females (n=10) were maintained individually in contact with M. euphorbiae hosts (n=30) inside petri dishes containing lettuce leaf discs and maintained in environmental chamber at 22 ± 1°C, 70 ± 10% RH, and 12-h photophase. The multiple parasitism experiments consisted of exposing single parasitized aphids (n=120) to the second parasitoid species. Two oviposition events were performed with a 4-h interval between them, namely the following: sequence A (oviposition by A. ervi, followed by P. volucre) and sequence B (oviposition by P. volucre, followed by A. ervi). Oviposition sequence A generated 24 A. ervi and 55 P. volucre adults, whereas oviposition sequence B generated 23 and 49 adults. P. volucre is an intrinsically superior competitor compared with A. ervi, and the use of the two species simultaneously may result in competitive exclusion and influence the stability of the parasitoid population.  相似文献

When insects are exposed to fluctuating thermal regimes (FTRs) (i.e., cold exposure alternating with periodic short pulses to high temperature), in contrast to constant low temperature (CLT), mortality due to accumulation of chill injuries is markedly reduced. To investigate the physiological processes behind the positive impact of FTR, based on a holistic approach, two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) analysis were performed with the parasitic wasp Aphidius colemani. Parasitoid proteomes revealed 369 well-distinguishable protein spots, where the overall response to cold exposure was clearly specific to treatments (CLT versus FTR). The reduced mortality under FTR was associated with up-regulation of several proteins playing key roles in energy metabolism (glycolysis, TCA cycle, synthesis and conversion of ATP), protein chaperoning (Hsp70/Hsp90), and protein degradation (proteasome). Our results also support the idea that cytoskeleton components, particularly actin arrangement, could play a role in the higher survival rates of insects under FTR.  相似文献

Parasitic hymenoptera of potato aphids were collected and identified in 2000 and 2001 in 11 potato fields in Belgium. Nine Aphidiidae species, parasiting seven aphid species, were found: Aphidius ervi, Aphidius matricariae, Aphidius picipes, Binodoxys angelicae, Diaeretiella rapae, Praon abjectum, Praon gallicium, Praon volucre and Toxares deltiger. A. ervi and A. picipes were the dominant and sub-dominant species, with 54% and 28% of the primary parasite collected, respectively. Both species and T. deltiger were found on Aphis nasturti, Aulacorthum solani, Macrosiphum euphorbiae and Myzus persicae, the four most important aphid potato in Belgium. Parasitism rate of A. nasturtii and, to a lesser extent, M. euphorbiae was low compared to A. solani and M. persicae. Parasitism of A. solani was particularly high, with 63.5% in 2000 and 89.2% in 2001, and this species was the preferred host of several Aphidiid species. The abundance of alternative hosts as other crops pest aphids or non-pest aphids on wild plants in agroecosystems could explains the efficacy of these species. The biological control of A. nasturtii and M. euphorbiae by parasitic hymenoptera was poorer, and several studies need to be undertaken to find suitable parasitic hymenoptera species effective on these aphids and agro-environmental measures able to promote them.  相似文献

Abstract.  The impact of fluctuating thermal regimes on the cold tolerance of the parasitoid Aphidius colemani at the mummy stage is examined. The hypothesis is tested that, if a cold period is interrupted by a return to a higher temperature for a short time, a physiological recovery is possible and may lead to higher survival. Mummies are exposed to a constant temperature of 4 °C and, when periodic sudden transfers to 20 °C for 2 h are applied, survival of immature parasitoids is markedly improved, proportionally to the warming frequency. The time lag before emergence diminishes with the duration of cold exposure and with warming frequency. The sex ratio of emergent adults after cold exposure indicates that males may be more susceptible than females to cold-injury. It is suggested that the transfer to 20 °C allows a re-activation of the normal metabolism, leading to repair and recovery of any injuries caused by prolonged chilling. The study underlines the importance of cyclic temperature changes on insect survival.  相似文献

Drosophila suzukii is an invasive pest causing severe damages to a large panel of cultivated crops. To facili tate its biocontrol with stratcgies such as sterile or incompatible insect techniques,D.suzukid must be mass-produced and then stored and transported under low temperature.Prolonged cold exposure induces chill injuries that can be mitigated if the cold period is interrupted with short warming intervals, referred to as fluctuating thermal regimes(FTR).In this study,we tested how to optimally use FTR to extend the shelf life of D.suzukii under cold storage.Several FTR parameters were asessed:temperature(15,20,25℃),duration(0.5,1,2,3 h),and frequency(every 12,24,36,48 h)of warming intervals,in two wild-type lines and in two developmental stages(pupac and adults).Generally,FTR improved cold storage tolerance with respect to constant low temperatures(CLT).Cold mortality was lower when recovery temperature was 20℃ or higher, when duration was 2 h per day or longer, and when warming interruptions occurred frequently(every 12 or 24 h).Applying an optimized FTR protocol to adults greatly reduced cold mortality over long-term storage(up to 130 d).Consequences of FTR on fitness-related traits were also investigated. For adults, poststorage survival was unaffected by FTR,as was the case for female fecundity and male mating capacity. On the other hand, when cold storage occurred at pupal stage, postorage survival and male mating capacity were altered under CLT,but not under FTR.After storage of pupae, female fecundity was lower under FTR compared to CLT,suggesting an energy trade-off between repair of chill damages and C22 production. This study provides detailed information on the application and optimization of an FTR-based protocol for cold storage of D.suzuki that could be useful for the biocontrol of this pest.  相似文献

Generalists and specialists use different cues to find their habitat and essential resources. While generalists have the advantage of exploiting a wider range of resources, they are predicted to be less efficient in using one particular resource compared to specialists. The level of specialization of parasitoids can be either at the habitat or at the host level; strategies used by either type are expected to differ. We examined interactions between three aphid parasitoid species that are a habitat specialist Aphidius rhopalosiphi, a habitat generalist Aphidius ervi, and a host generalist Praon volucre on three cereal aphids, Sitobion avenae, Metopolophium dirhodum and Rhopalosiphum padi. We compared total parasitism rate across behavioral and physiological variation in a non-choice test. Next, we addressed total parasitism in two phases to examine: (1) the response of parasitoids to different hosts through the behavioral sequence from antennation through oviposition, and (2) the physiological suitability of different hosts for oviposition and larval development. Parasitization typically involved the following behavioral steps: (1) antennal contact, (2) abdominal bending, and (3) ovipositor insertion (acceptance). A. rhopalosiphi had the same number of antennal contacts with the three aphids but showed fewer instances of abdominal bending towards R. padi. Pre-contact host preference was found for A. ervi but it did not correspond to the level of acceptance. The number of antennal contacts by P. volucre corresponded to the parasitization level of the aphid species but more mummies were produced on M. dirhodum than on R. padi. These results suggest that parasitoid species that are habitat specialists react similarly to the different host species present in the same habitat, whereas generalist species exhibit clear preferences during host selection. Preferences were, however, not always related to host suitability.  相似文献

Abstract Precocene II terminated pupal diapause in the bollworm Helicoverpa armigera as 20-hydroxyecdysterone did, whereas juvenile hormone analog ZR-515, cyclic adenosine monophosphate (CAMP), and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) did not. The results indicate that precocene II affects diapausing pupae in the similar way as what was found in the prepupae of the aphid parasitoids, Aphidius matricariae Haliday and Praon volucre Haliday (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae). It is suggested that precocene II may affect different kinds of termination of diapause in insects.  相似文献

The role of winter diapause in two aphid parasitoid species, Aphidius ervi Haliday and Aphidius rhopalosiphi DeStefani-Peres (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae), in host synchronization and the induction of cold hardiness was investigated. Parasitoids were reared during three successive generations on Sitobion avenae Fabricius, at 15 degrees C under a photoperiod of 9 h light 15 h dark. Although these conditions are known to be strongly diapause inducing, neither parasitoids showed an incidence of diapause above 65% over the three generations; the rest of the population underwent quiescence. In both parasitoid species, diapausing mummies exhibited greater cold hardiness than non-diapausing mummies, resulting in significantly lower supercooling points (SCP) and in a higher survival rate during long-term exposures at 0 and -10 degrees C. The induction of increased cold hardiness in parasitoids was thus associated with the diapause state. SCPs of third instar larvae of S. avenae were similar to those of non-diapausing mummies of both parasitoid species, but significantly higher than those of diapausing mummies. The effect of winter climate on the stability of the host-parasitoid interaction is discussed.  相似文献

Aphidius ervi and Aphidius eadyi, two parasitoids of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum, were attracted to components of the aphid sex pheromone in laboratory bioassays. Pre-test experience with host aphids in the presence of aphid sex pheromone did not affect the response of A. ervi to pheromone in a 4-way olfactometer, compared with that of naive parasitoids. Aphidius ervi females exposed only to the pheromone prior to testing did not respond in the olfactometer, suggesting habituation to the foraging cue by the parasitoid. In a wind tunnel, aphid sex pheromone increased the attraction of A. ervi to the plant-host complex (Vicia faba/A. pisum), suggesting an additive effect when two different foraging cues are present simultaneously.  相似文献

Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to construct electrophoretic 'keys' for identifying larval, pupal and adult hymenopterous parasitoids of Sitobion avenae (F.). In general, for each parasitoid and enzyme system tested, all life stages gave similar banding patterns. Although five enzyme systems were tested, esterase was found to be the most useful single system. Using laboratory-reared parasitoids and staining for esterase activity, all species examined, except Aphidius rhopalosiphi and A. ervi could be readily distinguished with the aid of the appropriate key.  相似文献

Host insects are either susceptible or resistant to parasitoids, where resistant hosts express immunity factors and compatible parasitoids express virulence factors that may reveal the manipulation of susceptible hosts. Using proteomics we compared responses of the same host, the aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae, challenged by a well-adapted parasitoid Aphidius nigripes or by a less adapted relative, Aphidius ervi. The host was found to be equally acceptable to both parasitoids, but while A. nigripes normally developed and killed hosts (high susceptibility), development of the incompatible A. ervi was arrested at the primary egg stage (high resistance). Two-dimensional gels at two stages of parasitism revealed divergence in patterns of protein regulation of the M. euphorbiae host, responding to A. ervi or A. nigripes, with the greatest number of protein modulations in the host resistance response. In A. ervi-resistant hosts, proPO was strongly up-regulated, as were also three cuticle proteins, suggesting a PO basis and exoskeleton reinforcement as early and late responses of M. euphorbiae to the risk of parasitism. Resistance also correlated with up-regulation of antioxidative, energy-related, cytoskeleton and heat shock proteins. In A. nigripes-susceptible hosts, various proteins implicated in host and bacterial symbiont metabolism were significantly altered, suggesting complex host nutritional modulation. Over-expression of energy-related proteins also increased when A. nigripes established and developed. Aphid proteomes of compatible and incompatible Aphidius parasitism provide an integrative basis for consolidating our knowledge of host-parasitoid interactions.  相似文献

Blueberry scorch virus, a commercially important Carlavirus in highbush blueberry, Vaccinium corymbosum L., is vectored by aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae). We surveyed the aphids, primary parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae, Braconidae), and associated secondary parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Charipidae, Megaspilidae, Pteromalidae) on highbush blueberry and other Vaccinium in the Pacific Northwest from 1995 to 2006, with samples concentrated in 2005 and 2006, to lay the groundwork for augmentative biological control. Ericaphis fimbriata (Richards) was the principal aphid. The dominant parasitoid species were Praon unicum Smith, Aphidius n. sp., A. sp., and Aphidius ervi Haliday. Their frequency in relation to the other primary parasitoids varied significantly with geographical area; P. unicum dominated the frequency distribution in southwestern British Columbia, A. n. sp., west of the Cascades, and A. sp. and A. ervi east of the Cascades. Among the secondary parasitoids, pteromalids dominated, and their frequency in relation to the other secondary parasitoids was lowest in southwestern British Columbia. The parasitization rate for P. unicum and A. n. sp. in southwestern British Columbia increased from May or June to a maximum of 0.080 +/- 0.024 and 0.090 +/- 0.084 (SD), respectively, in late July or early August. P. unicum emerged in the spring 4 wk before A. n. sp. The parasitization rate for P. unicum was lower in conventional than organic fields. Whereas aphid density increased monotonically, P. unicum had two spring peaks. A simulation model showed that these peaks could reflect discrete generations. Releases of insectary-reared P. unicum at 150 or 450 DD above 5.6 degrees C, summing from 1 January, may effectively augment the natural spring populations by creating overlapping generations.  相似文献

Host age and fitness-related traits in a koinobiont aphid parasitoid   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Abstract.  1. Trade-offs play a key role in species evolution and should be found in host–parasitoid interactions where the host quality may differ between host age categories.
2. The braconid wasp, Aphidius ervi , is a solitary endoparasitoid that allows its aphid hosts to continue to feed and grow after parasitisation. The hypotheses that host age influences their quality and that female parasitoids exploit their hosts based on that quality were tested under laboratory conditions using no-choice tests.
3.  Aphidius ervi females accepted the aphid Myzus persicae for oviposition and their progeny developed successfully in all host ages. The fitness-related traits of parasitoids did not increase linearly with the host age in which they developed. Host quality was found to be optimal at intermediate host ages and the females preferred to parasitise these hosts. The shortest progeny development time and a more female-biased sex ratio were observed in hosts of intermediate age.
4. This study suggests the existence of multiple interactive trade-offs occurring during host–parasitoid interactions according to host age related quality.  相似文献

The parasitoids Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) and Aphidius colemani Viereck play an important role on the regulation of aphid populations on chrysanthemum grown in greenhouses. This study evaluated the interaction of biological control and plant resistance by the development and the parasitism of L. testaceipes and A. colemani on Aphis gossypii Glover. The aphid host was kept on commercial cultivars of chrysanthemum susceptible Yellow Snowdon (YS) and resistant White Reagan (WR). The experiment was carried out in climatic chamber at 22 +/- 1 masculineC, 70 +/- 10% RH, and photophase 12h. Nymphs of 2nd and 3rd instars of A. gossypii attacked only once by the parasitoids were used in the experiment. The development time was 15.0 and 12.9 days for L. testaceipes and 17.0 and 16.3 days for A. colemani kept on A gossypii on cvs. YS and WR, respectively. The parasitoid L. testaceipes showed greater parasitism rate (68.4%) on A. gossypii on cv. YS than on WR (50%), and for A. colemani was not found significative difference on parasitism (46.8 and 35% to YS and WR, respectively). The emergence rates of L. testaceipes and A. colemani were 91.6% and 85.3% on A gossypii reared on YS, and 78.1% and 100% on WR, respectively. The longevity of A colemani and the parasitism rate of L. testaceipes were affected in a negative way by the cv. WR. The results indicated a positive interaction of biological control with parasitoids and the resistant cv. WR on A. gossypii control in protected cultivation.  相似文献

Plant viruses modify the development of their aphid vectors by inducing physiological changes in the shared host plant. The performance of hymenopterous parasitoids exploiting these aphids can also be modified by the presence of the plant pathogen. We used laboratory and glasshouse microcosms containing beans (Vicia faba) as the host plant to examine the interactions between a plant virus (pea enation mosaic virus; PEMV) and a hymenopterous parasitoid (Aphidius ervi) that share the aphid vector/host Acyrthosiphon pisum. Neither PEMV-infection of V. faba, nor the carriage of PEMV virions by A. pisum, affected the growth or morphology of the aphid, or the oviposition behaviour and development of A. ervi. The presence of developing Aphidius ervi larvae within Acyrthosiphon pisum did not affect the ability of the aphids to transmit PEMV. However, by reducing their longevity, parasitism ultimately decreased the time viruliferous aphids were able to inoculate plants. In terms of virus dispersal, parasitized aphids exhibited more movement around experimental arenas than unparasitized controls, causing a slight increase in the proportion of beans infected with PEMV. Exposure to adult Aphidius ervi caused Acyrthosiphon pisum to rapidly drop off bean plants and disperse to new hosts, resulting in considerably higher plant infection rates (70%) than that seen in control arenas (25%). The results of this investigation demonstrate that when parasitoids are added to a plant-pathogen-vector system, benefits to the host plant due to reduced herbivore infestation must be balanced against the consequences of parasitoid-induced aphid dispersal and a subsequent increase in the level of plant infection.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. A Y-tube olfactometer was used to test the reactions of the hymenopteran cereal aphid parasitoids Aphidius uzbekistanicus Luzhetski and A. ervi Haliday to odours from aphids and their host plants. Only females responded to aphids but both sexes responded to plant odours. A. uzbekistanicus responded to the cereal aphids Sitobion avenae (F.) and Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) whilst A. ervi , which has a broad host range, responded to M. dirhodum and the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum. Female A. uzbekistanicus responded to wheat leaves only but males responded to a range of plant material. Both male and female A. ervi responded to wheat and bean leaves. The failure of A. ervi to respond to either nettle aphids, Microlophium carnosum (Bukt.), or nettle leaves, despite its frequent parasitization of this aphid in the field, suggests the existence of more than one race of the parasitoid and casts doubts on the usefulness of alternative hosts as reservoirs for A. ervi in integrated control programmes. Males of both species responded to their respective females suggesting the presence of a sex specific attractant.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. Direct observations of Aphidius colemani foraging for Aphis glycines demonstrated that A. colemani attacks large aphid size classes selectively, in contrast to other Aphidiinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) species that generally prefer small or medium-sized nymphs of different host species.
2. To determine the effect of this size preference on the potential ability of A. colemani to control A. glycines outbreaks, the stage-dependent survival and fecundity of A. glycines were measured to parameterise a stage-structured demographic model for the density-independent population growth rate of the aphid.
3. Compared with hypothetical parasitoids that show either no size preference or preference for medium-sized host nymphs, the preference of A. colemani for large hosts caused a greater reduction in the population growth rate of A. glycines . This occurs in the model because, by attacking reproductive adults, A. colemani kills those aphids that have the greatest immediate effect on the population growth rate.
4. The strong effect of size preference by A. colemani is diminished somewhat by the continued reproduction of A. glycines adults, which can reproduce for up to 3 days following parasitism. Nonetheless, reproduction by parasitised aphids is not enough to compensate for the stronger, negative effect of the preference of A. colemani for large aphids, which removes individuals with the greatest reproductive value from the A. glycines population.  相似文献

1 Insecticidal proteins can be excreted in the honeydew when sap-sucking insects feed on insect-resistant transgenic plants. Honeydew can be an important source of carbohydrates, thus potentially exposing a broad range of honeydew-feeding insects to transgene products.
2 Snowdrop lectin ( Galanthus nivalis agglutinin; GNA) dissolved in a 2 m sucrose solution had no antifeedant effect on female aphid parasitoids ( Aphidius ervi ) but had a direct negative effect on their longevity.
3 When feeding on honeydew from Rhopalosiphum padi feeding on a GNA-containing artificial diet, Aphidius ervi suffered a longevity reduction that was more pronounced than was to be expected based on the detected GNA concentration in the honeydew.
4 Analysis of carbohydrate and amino acid composition revealed that a change in honeydew composition caused by a GNA-effect on the aphids could be a possible explanation for the additional reduction in parasitoid longevity.
5 When comparing the effect of honeydew from Sitobion avenae and R. padi feeding on GNA-expressing or nontransformed wheat plants on A. ervi longevity, aphid species was found to have a significant effect, whereas the wheat variety had no effect. The latter result was probably due to low GNA expression levels in the plants. Differences in nutritional suitability between honeydew from R. padi and S. avenae could be explained by differences in carbohydrate and amino acid composition.
6 This is the first study to demonstrate that GNA ingested by aphids and transported into the honeydew can negatively affect the parasitoids consuming this honeydew.
7 We recommend that honeydew should be considered as a route of exposure to transgene products in future risk assessment studies.  相似文献

When stressful cold-exposure is interrupted by short warm intervals, physiological recovery is possible, and this improves markedly the survival of insects. Fluctuating thermal regime (FTR) may act as a cue triggering the initiation of a metabolic response involving synthesis of cryoprotective compounds, such as free amino acids (FAA). Since specific changes in FAA levels can provide a good indication of the overall response of an organism to stressful conditions, we investigated temporal changes in FAA body contents of the parasitoid Aphidius colemani Viereck during exposure to FTR (4 degrees C: 20 degrees C for 22 h: 2 h per day) versus constant low temperature (4 degrees C). Physiological response during cold-exposure was clearly dissimilar between thermal treatments. Under constant cold-exposure FAA pool increased, whereas it decreased with cold-exposure duration in FTR. No single FAA accumulation could explain the higher survival under FTR. We propose that instead of considering FAA as a part of cryoprotective arsenal, FAA accumulation should rather be regarded as a symptom of a cold-induced physiological response. This is much less manifest under FTR, as the warm intervals likely allow a periodic reactivation of normal metabolic activities and a recovery of developmental processes.  相似文献
