Increasing the lactose content of different milk replacers or milk diets by approx. 30 % of the dry matter increased the frequency of diarrhoea the first 10–12 days in young calves on all occasions in 5 experiments comprising 120 calves. For all diets taken together, this effect was highly significant. Total daily intakes of lactose amounted to 200–480 g. When lactose was given on top of the milk rations, the growth rate increased significantly, whereas the growth rate was usually insignificantly reduced when lactose replaced other nutrients in milk diets or milk replacers, their levels of protein and fat becoming low. Albumin and total protein in blood plasma were significantly lower when the dietary protein level was low. Milk replacers with 20 or 40 % whey powder, replacing skim milk powder, performed equally well, but gave significantly less growth than the old-fashioned feeding of whole milk-skim milk. Intake of hay and barley and a number of clinical and histological or pathological parameters did not vary consistently with dietary level of whey powder or lactose. Feeding whole milk all the time resulted in low intake of hay and barley and poorly developed forestomachs, but high dressing-out %. Substituting soya for part of the skim milk powder in milk replacers gave abomasal content with no curds. In most cases, pH in the rumen appeared to be nearly up to neutral until the calves ate ground barley, about 1 month old.  相似文献

In two experiments, the performance and health of calves fed on diets containing dried microbial cells (DMC) was monitored. In the first experiment 32 seven-day-old British Friesian bull calves, reared on a conventional early weaning system to 8 weeks of age, were given milk replacers in which 5, 10 and 20% spray-dried DMC and whey replaced 14–55% of skim milk protein. All DMC diets contained 36 g/kg of non-nucleic acid nitrogen. In Experiment 2, 38 two-day-old Ayrshire bull calves were fed for 63 days solely on one of two milk diets containing 0 or 10% DMC at 5 levels of intake designed to produce body gains of 0–1 kg/day. While the inclusion of up to 10% DMC in both experiments had little effect on performance or health, 20% DMC was associated with severe diarrhoea, loss of appetite and growth retardation, and impaired clotting of the milk in vitro. In Experiment 2 the response, in gain, by calves given increasing intakes of milk dry matter was linear and was unaffected by the type of diet offered.It was concluded that when levels of DMC in excess of 10% inclusion are used in association with maize starch, deleterious effects on performance are likely.  相似文献

Milk substitutes for calves are based upon dried skim milk and added fats of vegetable or animal origin. Many attempts have been made to replace part of the skim milk in these feeds by cheaper sources of protein.A milk product coagulates in the calf's abomasum and has a high digestibility. Milk replacers based on fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) do not coagulate in the abomasum, but have a high apparent digestibility coefficient (0.92) and the amino acid balance is similar to that of skim milk.Calves were fed on milk replacers prepared from FPH made from various materials. In general, FPH prepared from white fish (cod, blue whiting, white fish offal) was satisfactory although calf performance until weaning was poorer than for calves fed on milk replacers with dried skim milk (SMP). Some ways are suggested by which the quality of the product (FPH) could be maintained. FPH preparations from fatty fish, like sprats and mackerel, were also used. An antioxidant was added in the preparation of sprats and mackerel because of the unsaturated nature of fish fats. Milk replacers containing sprats prepared without an antioxidant and mackerel (31% body fat) with antioxidant were unsatisfactory and further development work is required on FPH materials from fatty fish.FPH from white fish can be dried without any appreciable loss in calf performance. The daily gain to weaning was 0.25 and 0.29 kg per day for calves fed on the dried and undried material, respectively. On the basis of present knowledge it is suggested that FPH can replace one third of skim milk in milk replacers for early weaned calves; the proportion recommended may rapidly increase with further technical development of the product.  相似文献

Neutral amino acids in the brain: changes in response to food ingestion   总被引:18,自引:13,他引:5  
Abstract— The brain levels of each of the aromatic and branched-chain amino acids change 2 h after fasting rats begin to consume either a carbohydrate-fat diet or a similar diet containing 18% or 40% protein. Carbohydrate-fat ingestion elevates the concentrations of each of the aromatic amino acids in brain, while substantially depressing those of the branched-chain amino acids. The inclusion of protein in this diet suppresses the increases in brain aromatic amino acids and attenuates the decreases in the branched-chain amino acids. The changes in the brain level of each neutral amino acid following the ingestion of any of these diets correlate extremely well with the effects of the diet on the serum neutral amino acid pattern, specifically on the serum concentration ratio of each neutral amino acid to the sum of the other neutral amino acids. The diet-induced changes in the brain level of each of the amino acids also correlate surprisingly well with the calculated rate of brain influx for each amino acid.  相似文献

Summary The objective of these experiments was to examine short- and long-term (7 d) effects of arginine-deficient diets on free amino acid concentrations in hindlimb muscle of rats. In rats fed the control diet containing arginine (+Arg), muscle alanine and methionine concentrations were higher 1 and 2h after feeding compared to food-deprived rats, whereas branched-chain amino acids, arginine and asparagine concentrations were lower postprandially. In Experiment 1, rats were fed an arginine-deficient (–Arg) diet with glutamate (+Glu) substituted for arginine; alanine (+Ala), ornithine (+Orn) or citrulline (+Cit) were substituted for arginine in Experiment 2. In Experiment 1, arginine concentrations decreased in blood but not in muscle. This contrasts with rats fed –Arg/+Ala or –Arg/+Orn diets which had muscle arginine concentrations less than half the concentrations in controls or in rats fed the –Arg/+Cit diet. Muscle essential amino acids in Experiment 2 did not differ by diet, but muscle branched-chain amino acids were elevated relative to controls in the rats fed –Arg/+Ala or –Arg/+Orn diets; however, rats fed the –Arg/+Cit diet had levels similar to the controls. Also, muscle branched-chain amino acids were correlated with glutamine concentrations in both blood and muscle. Veal calves aged 8 weeks were fed iso‐energetic amounts of milk replacers with either a low (7.1g of calcium/kg of air‐dry diet) or a high concentration of calcium (11.6g of calcium/kg of air‐dry diet) for a period of 10 weeks. The extra calcium was added in the form of calcium formiate. Final body weight of the two dietary groups was similar. Faeces were collected during the final week of the trial. The high calcium diet raised faecal dry matter output by 87% and faecal energy by 70%. The extra output of faecal dry matter was composed of 36% and 37% of crude fat and ash, respectively. The extra faecal energy output was for 75% in the form of crude fat. The high versus low calcium intake not only depressed apparent digestibility of total lipids but also that of crude protein, carbohydrates and ash. It is concluded that a high calcium intake by veal calves reduced energy availability without affecting body weight gain.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of protein consumption on extracellular amino acid concentrations in the medial preoptic area (MPOA) of rats. Rats were given free access to diets containing 0, 25 or 50 % protein for 3-h duration, starting from the onset of dark cycle (1800 h). The microdialysis probe was implanted into the MPOA at 1500 h. Dialysates were collected every 20 min from 1700 h to 2100 h. Amino acid concentrations in dialysate samples were determined by reverse phase-HPLC. Extracellular amino acid concentrations in the MPOA were elevated by protein consumption within 20 to 40 min following the start of the meal. The 50 % protein diet resulted in increased (p<0.05) alanine, glutamine, isoleucine, leucine, methionine, tyrosine and valine concentrations, when compared with both baseline and the 0% protein diet. When the 25 % protein diet was fed, amino acid concentrations in the MPOA were between those after the 0 and 50% protein diets. The ratio of tryptophan to the total branched-chain amino acids in extracellular fluid was highest after the 0% protein diet and increased with time. We conclude that extracellular amino acid profiles in the MPOA are affected by dietary protein content.  相似文献

In an experiment with veal calves, the digestibility of the SCP-product ‘Pruteen’ was determined twice, with animals of 8–9 and 15–16 weeks of age respectively. The ‘Pruteen’ was included in the milk replacer diet at a level of 20%. The ‘Pruteen’-product tested contained 74% crude protein and 10% crude fat.The average digestibility of the crude protein in ‘Pruteen’ (93.6%) was nearly as high as that of milk protein (94.2%).The apparent digestibility of the individual amino acids in milk protein and in ‘Pruteen’ was in good agreement with the digestibility of the crude protein, except for cystine in milk protein which gave a low value.The digestibility of the crude fat fraction of ‘Pruteen’ is also high, probably 90–100%.  相似文献

Fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) has been used as the sole source of protein in milk replacers for lambs in several experiments. In comparison with casein, diets containing FPH gave slightly inferior growth rates during the first 2 weeks of a 5-week rearing period. The lower growth rate was generally compensated for in the following 3 weeks so that overall growth rate and food utilization were similar with milk replacers containing casein or FPH. Diets based on FPH, lard and hydrolysed starch were found to give results similar to a milk replacer based on casein, butterfat and lactose. The use of fat fish to provide both the source of fat and protein has received some attention and needs to be further investigated.  相似文献

In an experiment with 4 × 12 male veal calves, the influence of 0, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5% ICI protein and sweet whey powder in a milk replacer on growth; feed efficiency; blood concentrations of urea, uric acid and allantoin; and on the iron status, colour of the meat and carcass grade of the animals was investigated. The proportion of skimmed milk powder in the milk replacer was thus reduced in protein equivalence by 5, 10 and 15% (groups II–IV).Feeding with 2.5, 5 and 7.5% ICI protein in the milk replacer gave, over the whole fattening period (60–150 kg), about the same rates of growth and feed efficiency as the exclusive use of milk protein. While the urea content in the serum was not significantly influenced by the protein sources used, the uric acid and allantoin levels of the groups given ICI protein had risen greatly at 5 weeks and at the end of fattening experiment. Despite the higher total iron supply to groups II, III and IV, the criteria indicating iron supply such as haemoglobin, haematocrit and myoglobin levels did not show any increase compared to group I. Similarly, no significant differences in meat colour and carcass grade were found among the experimental groups.For veal calves the level of ICI protein in the milk replacer can be up to 7.5% during the entire feeding period.  相似文献

The effects of moist extrusion processing of diets containing fish meal (FM) and conventional defatted soybean meal (SBM) or untoasted defatted soybean meal (white flakes [WF]) on amino acid composition, trypsin inhibitor activity (TIA), and apparent total tract digestibility of nutrients were studied. Three diets with the nutritional characteristics of feeds for salmonid fish were formulated: one control based on FM as protein source and two others where 40% of total amino acids from FM were substituted by either SBM or WF. Each diet was fed to mink either as an unextruded mixture of the ingredients or as extruded pellets in order to determine the effect of extrusion processing. Extrusion did not change the amino acid composition of the diets significantly, but reduced the TIA of both diets containing soy products by approximately 76%. Intake of the unextruded WF diet was only one-third compared with the other diets. The dry matter concentration in faeces from mink fed diets containing soy products was significantly lower than in mink fed the FM diet. Digestibility of crude protein, all amino acids and fat was lower, but starch higher, in the unextruded WF diet than in the FM and SBM diets, whereas no significant differences were found among the extruded diets. Extrusion of the WF diet increased digestibility of protein and all amino acids. The greatest increase in digestibility after extrusion of the WF diet was observed for cysteine followed by tryptophan. Extrusion of the FM and SBM diets had no significant effect on amino acid digestibility. Digestibility of starch was, in general, increased by extrusion. It is concluded that the heat treatment involved in typical moist extrusion processing used for fish feed may be sufficient to inactivate most of the TIA in unheated soybean meal, and to increase digestibility of the protein in WF to approximately the same level as found for SBM and FM. Still, extrusion is a lenient process with minor effects on nutrient digestibility of diets containing fish meal or toasted soybean meal as major protein sources.  相似文献

Sixty male Friesian calves were weaned from milk at 5 weeks of age. From 3 to 11 weeks of age, the calves were offered a diet of barley, meat meal, urea and 15% oat straw, supplemented with sodium chloride (NaCl) or sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). The sodium (Na) contents of the diets supplemented with NaCl were 0.3, 1.1, 1.9 and 2.8%. The sodium contents of the diets supplemented with NaHCO3 were 1.1 and 1.9%.The performance of the calves fed on the diets containing 0.3, 1.1 and 1.9% Na from NaCl was similar, but the organic matter intake and weight gains of the calves fed on the diet containing 2.8% Na were significantly lower between 5 and 11 weeks of age. The feed intake of the calves fed on the diets containing 1.1 and 1.9% Na from NaHCO3 was 8 and 15% greater than the feed intake of the calves fed on the diet containing 0.3% Na. However, there was no significant difference in the intake of organic matter, the efficiency of feed conversion ratios or the weight gains of the calves.The sodium treatments resulted in no significant differences in the concentration of volatile fatty acids in the rumen. Summary Concentrations and fluxes of amino acids across the portal-drained viscera (PDV) and liver were assessed in rats fed a meal of one of three arginine-deficient diets containing either alanine or the arginine precursors, ornithine or citrulline. A previous report included findings of seven arginine-related amino acids and indicated that only the citrulline-containing diet protected blood arginine concentrations. In the present report we extend these findings and note that the concentrations and fluxes of the non-arginine-related amino acids showed remarkable consistency across diet groups. However, total branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) concentrations of arterial blood were higher in rats fed the - Arg/+ Ala and the - Arg/+ Orn diets than in rats fed the control (+ Arg) diet. The elevated BCAA correlated with higher circulating concentrations of other essential amino acids but were inversely correlated with arginine concentrations. PDV and hepatic fluxes of BCAA were not different across diet groups, indicating that amino acid absorption and hepatic utilization of BCAA were generally comparable across diet groups. Hepatic concentrations of 14 of 22 measured amino acids, including total BCAA, were correlated with their arterial concentrations. The question was addressed whether the type of dietary protein influences copper (Cu) concentrations in liver and plasma of rats. For this purpose, weanling female rats were fed diets containing as the sole source of protein either soybean protein, casein, amino acid mixtures simulating soybean protein or casein, lactalbumin, ovalbumin, or herring meal. The diets were balanced for residual Cu in the protein preparations. The type of protein and the composition of the amino acid mixture did not differentially influence liver Cu concentrations. Liver Cu was significantly lowered after feeding the amino acid mixtures when compared with the intact proteins. Plasma Cu concentrations were not affected by the type of protein in the diet.  相似文献

Summary Kittens fed diets containing 0.75 × the NRC (1986) essential amino acid requirement (EAArq) and 210 to 560g crude protein(CP)/kg diet exhibited, with increasing CP: 1) decreasing weight gain, 2) decreasing plasma arginine concentrations, 3) increasing urinary orotic acid excretion, 4) increasing plasma glutamic acid concentrations, and 5) plasma isoleucine concentrations at levels that suggest a marginal isoleucine deficiency. Kittens fed a control diet (CD) containing 1.5 × EAArq and 350 g CP/kg diet had maximal weight gains and no orotic aciduria. It was concluded that the decreased weight gain and adverse metabolic effects were caused by arginine deficiency and possibly glutamic acid toxicity induced by high dietary dispensable amino acids. Kittens fed the diets containing 1.0 × EAArq and 350 and 560 g CP/kg diet had depressed plasma arginine and elevated glutamic acid concentrations and orotic aciduria. In light of increasing global protein prices and with the need to reduce environmental impact of contemporary systems of milk production, the current review seeks to assess the feasibility of reducing levels of dietary CP in dairy cow diets. At CP levels between 140 and 220 g/kg DM there is a strong positive relationship between CP concentration and dry matter intake (DMI). However, such effects are modest and reductions in DMI when dietary CP is below 180 g/kg DM can be at least partially offset by improving the digestibility and amino acid profile of the undegradable protein (UDP) component of the diet or by increasing rumen fermentable energy. Level and balance of intestinally absorbable amino acids, in particular methionine and lysine, may become limiting at lower CP concentrations. In general the amino acid composition of microbial protein is superior to that of UDP, so that dietary strategies that aim to promote microbial protein synthesis in the rumen may go some way to correcting for amino acid imbalances in low CP diets. For example, reducing the level of NDF, while increasing the proportion of starch, can lead to improvements in nitrogen (N) utilisation as great as that achieved by reducing dietary CP to below 150 g/kg. A systematic review and meta-analysis of responses to rumen protected forms of methionine and lysine was conducted for early/mid lactation cows fed diets containing ⩽150 g CP/kg DM. This analysis revealed a small but significant (P=0.002) increase in milk protein yield when cows were supplemented with these rumen protected amino acids. Variation in milk and milk protein yield responses between studies was not random but due to differences in diet composition between studies. Cows fed low CP diets can respond to supplemental methionine and lysine so long as DMI is not limiting, metabolisable protein (MP) is not grossly deficient and other amino acids such as histidine and leucine do not become rate limiting. Whereas excess dietary protein can impair reproduction and can contribute to lameness, there is no evidence to indicate that reducing dietary CP levels to around 140 to 150 g CP/kg DM will have any detrimental effect on either cow fertility or health. Contemporary models that estimate MP requirements of dairy cows may require refinement and further validation in order to predict responses with low CP diets.  相似文献

Due to the existence of isotope effects on some metabolic pathways of amino acid and protein metabolism, animal tissues are (15)N-enriched relative to their dietary nitrogen sources and this (15)N enrichment varies among different tissues and metabolic pools. The magnitude of the tissue-to-diet discrimination (Δ(15)N) has also been shown to depend on dietary factors. Since dietary protein sources affect amino acid and protein metabolism, we hypothesized that they would impact this discrimination factor, with selective effects at the tissue level. To test this hypothesis, we investigated in rats the influence of a milk or soy protein-based diet on Δ(15)N in various nitrogen fractions (urea, protein and non-protein fractions) of blood and tissues, focusing on visceral tissues. Regardless of the diet, the different protein fractions of blood and tissues were generally (15)N-enriched relative to their non-protein fraction and to the diet (Δ(15)N>0), with large variations in the Δ(15)N between tissue proteins. Δ(15)N values were markedly lower in tissue proteins of rats fed milk proteins compared to those fed soy proteins, in all sampled tissues except in the intestine, and the amplitude of Δ(15)N differences between diets differed between tissues. Both between-tissue and between-diet Δ(15)N differences are probably related to modulations of the relative orientation of dietary and endogenous amino acids in the different metabolic pathways. More specifically, the smaller Δ(15)N values observed in tissue proteins with milk than soy dietary protein may be due to a slightly more direct channeling of dietary amino acids for tissue protein renewal and to a lower recycling of amino acids through fractionating pathways. In conclusion, the present data indicate that natural Δ(15)N of tissue are sensitive markers of the specific subtle regional modifications of the protein and amino acid metabolism induced by the protein dietary source.  相似文献

In addition to its role as an essential protein component, leucine (Leu) displays several other metabolic functions such as activation of protein synthesis. This property makes it an interesting amino acid for the therapy of human muscle atrophy and for livestock production. However, Leu can stimulate its own degradation via the branched-chain keto acid dehydrogenase complex (BCKDH). To examine the response of several tissues to excessive Leu, pigs were fed diets containing two- (L2) and four-fold (L4) higher Leu contents than the recommended amount (control). We found that the L4 diet led to a pronounced increase in BCKDH activity in the brain (2.5-fold, P < 0.05), liver (1.8-fold, P < 0.05) and cardiac muscle (1.7-fold, P < 0.05), whereas we found no changes in enzyme activity in the pancreas, skeletal muscle, adipose tissue and intestinal mucosa. The L2 diet had only weak effects on BCKDH activity. Both high Leu diets reduced the concentrations of free valine and isoleucine in nearly all tissues. In the brain, high Leu diets modified the amount of tryptophan available: for serotonin synthesis. Compared to the controls, pigs treated with the high Leu diets consumed less food, showed increased plasma concentrations of 3-hydroxybutyrate and reduced levels of circulating serotonin. In conclusion, excessive Leu can stimulate BCKDH activity in several tissues, including the brain. Changes in cerebral tryptophan, along with the changes in amino acid-derived metabolites in the plasma may limit the use of high Leu diets to treat muscle atrophy or to increase muscle growth.  相似文献
