Phytoplankton pigments were studied by LiquidChromatography (HPLC) in nine West Europeanestuaries. Three estuaries, i.e. the Rhine,Scheldt and the Gironde were sampled four timesto cover the different seasons, whereas theother six estuaries were sampled once. Pigmentdistributions in estuaries reflect bothriverine inputs as well as autochthonousblooms. Fucoxanthin was the most commonaccessory photosynthetic pigment showing thatDiatoms were the most common group in thestudied estuaries and were particularlydominant during autumn and winter. In the veryturbid Gironde estuary, degradation processeswere predominant between salinities 1 and 20,while Diatoms, Dinoflagellates and Cryptophytesbloomed above 20 salinity during spring andsummer. This contrasted with the highlyeutrophic but less turbid Scheldt, wherephytoplanktonic blooms occurred at lowsalinities close to the city of Antwerp. In theScheldt, we observed both a tenfold fluctuationof phytoplankton biomass and a fluctuatingpigment diversity index. In contrast,chlorophyll a was always low in theGironde, but we observed large variations ofpigment diversity among samplings duringdifferent seasons. Distribution of pheopigmentsshowed that the maximum turbidity zone (MTZ)was a highly reactive region for heterotrophicphytoplankton degradation. The Scheldt and theThames were the most anthropogenic influencedestuaries contrasting with the Gironde estuarythat has a less urbanised watershed. Anestuarine typology is proposed based on threeclusters emerging from a correspondenceanalysis of pigment variables and variablescharacterising the anthropogenic impact andphysical forcing.  相似文献

The zooplankton of three european estuaries (Ems, Gironde and Westerschelde) was investigated during spring 1992 by means of samples taken along the salinity gradient. The three estuaries are comparable in terms of total area, flushing time and salinity gradient but differ by their level of eutrophication (highest in the Westerschelde), suspended matter concentration (highest in the Gironde) and potential phytoplankton production (highest in the Ems). Copepods and meroplankton dominated the zooplankton in the three estuaries. The dominant copepod species were Eurytemora affinis and Acartia bifilosa. The distribution of E. affinis along the salinity gradient differed between the estuaries. Peaks of abundance were observed at 0 PSU in the Gironde, 6 PSU in the Ems and 9 PSU in the Westerschelde. The downstream shift of the population in the Westerschelde was likely due to anoxic conditions occurring in the oligohaline zone. In the Gironde the downstream distribution of E. affinis was limited by the very high suspended matter concentration found in the maximum turbidity zone. Whatever the estuary, the parameters of the population of E. affinis and maximum abundance values were similar. However, the influence of the better quality of the available food was suggested in the Ems where individual dry weights and egg production were higher than in the two other estuaries. The influence of a good quality of food in the Ems was confirmed by the development of a large population of Acartia bifilosa (as abundant as E. affinis) and highest values of adult individual weights.The meroplankton (essentially Polychaete and cirripede larvae) was much more developed in the Ems than in the Westerschelde and Gironde. This was likely due to the large extent of mudflats and hard substrates in the Ems favouring adult settlement and hence the number of larvae locally produced.  相似文献

Meiofauna from the intertidal zone of five European estuaries (Ems, Westerschelde, Somme, Gironde, Tagus) was investigated. Samples represented a cross section of various benthic habitats from near-freshwater to marine, from pure silts to fine-sandy bottoms. The meiobenthic community comprised everywhere a fauna strongly dominated by nematodes, with meiobenthic density increasing with increasing salinity. The Ems differed from the other estuaries due to the presence of a well developed community of Copepods, Gastrotrichs, large Ciliates and/or soft-shelled Foraminiferans in some sites. The Westerschelde stood out due to the near-absence of harpacticoid copepods and, as in the Tagus, the lower meiobenthic densities in the marine part of the estuary. For nematode community analysis, we also included data from the Tamar which were obtained from the literature (Warwick &; Gee, 1984). This resulted in the enumeration of 220 species, belonging to 102 genera, each with a characteristic distribution along the salinity, sedimentary and latitudinal gradients. Using the multivariate technique CANOCO, a zonation along these different physicochemical determinants was observed as well although salinity and sediment characteristic (scale of hundreds of meters to kilometers) proved to be more important in explaining community structure than latitudinal differences (scale of hundreds of kilometers). Nematode diversity was nearly entirely determined on the genus level and was positively related to salinity. Deviations from this general trend in the Gironde and the Tamar were attributed to sedimentary characteristics or to low macrobenthic predation. The presence of a typical opportunistic colonizing nematode species Pareurodiplogaster pararmatus in the low-salinity region of the Gironde could indicate (organic?) pollution or disturbance of the intertidal mud-flats.  相似文献

The occurrence of volatile organometallicspecies of tin was evidenced and investigatedin three major European estuaries, such as theGironde (F), the Rhine (NL) and the Scheldt(B/NL), along with the salinity gradient andfor all seasons. The most ubiquitous species,observed in surface water, were found to bemethylated forms of butyl-tin derivatives(BunSnMe4-n, n = 0–3), withconcentrations significantly higher in theScheldt (ca. 75–2000 fmol l–1) than in theRhine (ca. 5–125 fmol l–1) and the Gironde(ca. 5–90 fmol l–1). Additionally,estuarine anoxic sediments were found tocontain large amount of such volatile tinspecies.The presence of volatile organic tin compoundsis then supposed to result from naturalmethylation processes of both inorganic metaland anthropogenic derivatives accumulated inthe sediments (i.e. tributyltin released fromship antifouling paintings and waste waterdischarges). These results suggest thatmicrobial mediated and/or chemical methylationmechanisms are likely to produce volatileorganotin species in anoxic estuarineenvironments. The production of volatileorganotin species is also mainly dependent onthe direct anthropogenic load of butyltincompounds within the estuary and on theresidence time of such compounds in the system.Estuarine profiles along with the salinitygradient demonstrate that all investigatedestuaries are continuous sources of volatiletin species, although these estuaries presentdifferent anthropogenic organotin discharges.In consequence, significant export of volatiletin species to the adjacent coastal waters werefound. Finally, the evaluation of the seasonalfluxes of volatile tin species to theatmosphere establishes that volatilisation is amajor sink for such compound in estuaries withlong water residence time (i.e. Scheldt, Gironde).  相似文献

Combining the results of field observations from the Eider, Elbe, Weser and Ems estuaries and laboratory experiments it was found that:
  1. in German North Sea estuaries the tidal freshwater reaches are the main habitat of the diatomActinocyclus normanii.
  2. the residence time within the tidal freshwater reaches is a key factor controlling not only seasonal and spatial densities within one estuary, but also density differences between estuaries;
  3. A. normanii is well adapted to strongly changing light situations and thus adapted to estuaries with high vertical turbulent mixing and low values of Zeu/Zmix;
  4. the downstream limit of the habitat ofA. normanii is mainly determined by light limitation rather than by hyperosmotic stress.

Summary The nonlinear membrane current-voltage relationship (I–V curve) for intact hyphae ofNeurospora crassa has been determined by means of a 3-electrode voltage-clamp technique, plus quasi-linear cable theory. Under normal conditions of growth and respiration, the membraneI–V curve is best described as a parabolic segement convex in the direction of depolarizing current. At the average resting potential of –174 mV, the membrane conductance is 190 mhos/cm2; conductance increases to 240 mhos/cm2 at –300 mV, and decreases to 130 mhos/cm2 at 0 mV. Irreversible membrane breakdown occurs at potentials beyond this range.Inhibition of the primary electrogenic pump inNeurospora by ATP withdrawal (with 1mm KCN) depolarizes the membrane to the range of –40 to –70 mV and reduces the slope of theI–V curve by a fixed scaling factor of approximately 0.8. For wild-typeNeurospora, compared under control conditions and during steady-state inhibition by cyanide, theI–V difference curve — presumed to define the current-voltage curve for the electrogenic pump — is a saturation function with maximal current of 20 A/cm2, a half-saturation potential near –300 mV, and a projected reversal potential of ca. –400 mV. This value is close to the maximal free energy available to the pump from ATP hydrolysis, so that pump stoichiometry must be close to 1 H+ extruded:1 ATP split.The time-courses of change in membrane potential and resistance with cyanide are compatible with the steady-stateI–V curves, under the assumption that cyanide has no major effects other than ATP withdrawal. Other inhibitors, uncouplers, and lowered temperature all have more complicated effects.The detailed temporal analysis of voltage-clamp data showed three time-constants in the clamping currents: one of 10 msec, for charging the membrane capacitance (0.9 F/cm2) a second of 50–75 msec; and a third of 20–30 sec, perhaps representing changes of intracellular composition.  相似文献

Two new species of Isospora are described from skinks, I. cryptoblephari n. sp. in Cryptoblepharus virgatus and I. delmae n. sp. in Delma nasuta, both collected in Australia. I. cryptoblephari oöcysts are ellipsoidal to subspherical, 17.5–22.5 × 25.0–30.0 m with two ovoid sporocysts, 9.0–10.0 × 12.5–14.0 m. I. delmae oöcysts are spherical to subspherical, 16.5–19.0 × 16.5–20.0 m with two ovoid sporocysts, 5.0–6.5 × 9.0–12.5 m. These species of Isospora had two sporocysts, each containing four sporozoites and a characteristic Stieda body. A study of endogenous stages in the host's intestine revealed that I. cryptoblephari develops in the nucleus and I. delmae in the cytoplasm of the host's gut epithelial cell. In the former, both merogony and gamogony occurred in the nucleus.  相似文献

The pCO2 distribution in thesurface waters of the Elbe estuary and German Bight was investigated during high river discharge in April 1997. pCO2 values of about 1100 atm foundin the upper part of the estuary are, comparedto other European rivers, only moderate. In theouter estuary, the enhanced river dischargecreates a pronounced river plume reflected in decreased surface salinity.However, pCO2 in this area(250 atm) is below atmospheric values dueto primary production. Comparison with resultswe obtained during other measuringcampaigns shows that in the outer estuarysupersaturation of CO2 with respect to theatmosphere occurs only in early spring duringthe time of highest river discharge. In latespring and summer, intensive primary productionwithin the surface layer leads to a pronouncedundersaturation (141 atm), despite atemperature increase of more than 20 °Cfrom winter to summer. Undersaturation isenforced by stable stratification of the watercolumn during the productive seasons thatdiminishes the entrainment of CO2from below the thermocline into the surfacewater. In winter, CO2 is close toequilibrium with the atmosphere and controlledby physical processes. Our data suggest thatthe Elbe estuary represents a sink foratmospheric CO2 over the investigatedseasons and that carbon cycling in this areais dominated by biological processes.  相似文献

Human dental fibroblasts transport choline actively. This transport is inhibitable by hemicholinium-3. In this paper, choline transport into fibroblasts of normal donors (four cell lines) and into those of Alzheimer victims (four cell lines, age and sex matched to the normals) is accelerated by methylated xanthines, nicotine, and dexamethasone. At a caffeine concentration of 10 M the stimulation of choline transport into normal cells averages 128% and into Alzheimer donor cells, 45%. 1 M Dexamethasone stimulates choline influx by 86% in normal cells and 36% in Alzheimer cells. Nicotine enhances choline transport by 35% in normal cells and by 16% in Alzheimer cells. The implication is that if Alzheimer's disease is a cholinergic disorder, it may be amenable to transport-directed chemotherapies.Special issue dedicated to Dr. Santiago Grisolia  相似文献

Actinomycetes, especially members of the genus Streptomyces, are responsible for producing the majority of known antibiotics. The production of antibiotics by filamentous organisms is often dependent on the morphology and size distribution of the pellet population within the culture. Particle interaction and subsequent pellet formation are primarily dependent on the rate of collision of particles in culture, which is in turn, a function of fluid turbulence. The microbial polysaccharide xanthan gum was used to artificially regulate the apparent viscosity (a) of S. hygroscopicus fermentation broths with the aim of controlling particle interaction, aggregation and hence pellet formation. An increase in both pellet count and biomass concentration from approximately 2,000 to 8,000 pellets ml–1 and 0.9–2.1 g l–1 dry weight of biomass, as well a decrease in the mean pellet volume from 0.014 to 0.004 mm3 was observed in cultures supplemented with 3 g l–1 xanthan gum. The addition of xanthan gum significantly alters fluid rheology by increasing the a. Counter-intuitively, an increase in the a within the experimental range examined resulted in an increase in the rate of gas–liquid mass transfer. This was attributed to the predominantly diffusive nature of oxygen transfer in shake flask cultures.  相似文献

Rates of carbon dioxide assimilation and methane oxidation were determined in various zones of the Rainbow Hydrothermal Field (36°N) of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. In the plume above the hydrothermal field, anomalously high methane content was recorded, the microbial population density (up to 105 cells/ml) was an order of magnitude higher than the background values, and the CO2 assimilation rate varied from 0.01 to 1.1 g C/(l day). Based on the data on CO2 assimilation, the production of organic carbon due to bacterial chemosynthesis in the plume was calculated to be 930 kg/day or 340 tons/year (about 29% of the organic carbon production in the photic zone). In the black smoke above active smokers, the microbial population density was as high as 106 cells/ml, the rate of CO2 assimilation made up 5–10 g C/(l day), the methane oxidation rate varied from 0.15 to 12.7 l/(l day), and the methane concentration ranged from 1.05 to 70.6 l/l. In bottom sediments enriched with sulfides, the rate of CO2 assimilation was at least an order of magnitude higher than in oxidized metal-bearing sediments. At the base of an active construction, whitish sediment was found, which was characterized by a high methane content (92 l/dm3) and a high rate of methane oxidation (1.7 l/(dm3 day)).  相似文献

Finfish culture is a growing industry, and it causes a nutrient loading problem. To investigate the feasibility of an integrated culture of kelp and salmon, 15-cm long kelp (Laminaria saccharina) was grown in salmon culture effluent. The objectives were to test the effects of flow rate and kelp density on dissolved inorganic nitrogen removal (DIN), and DIN uptake and growth by the kelp. NH 4 + , NO 3 and DIN (NH 4 + + NO 3 ) loadings were in the ranges 6.2–25.4, 12.9–40.0, 19.7–52.7 mol 1–1, respectively, over the experimental period.Surplus uptake of nitrogen was not evident, because the C:N ratio (10–11) was constant in all experiments. During light periods, the kelp removed from 170–339 mol 1–1 h–1, and approximately 26–40% of the incoming DIN. The DIN uptake rate, based on daylight sampling periods, ranged between 6.1–22.5 mol g–1 dry mass h–1. The highest-flow rate, lowest-density tank had the highest DIN uptake rate. Debris from the fish effluent settling on the kelp thalli in the low-flow rate tanks affected uptake. Mean DIN uptake rate based on 3 days of growth for all flow-density combinations ranged between 5.4–8.3 mol g–1 dry mass h–1. The kelp utilized NH 4 + and NO 3 equally.The growth ranged between 6.5–9% d–1. The biomass production ranged from 1–2 g per sampling period. The highest growth rate and biomass production were achieved by kelp in the highest-flow rate, lowest-density tank. Lower DIN concentrations due to higher DIN removal rates in the other tanks and light limitation due to self-shading in the high-density tanks were probably responsible for the reduced growth rate in these tanks.Author for correspondence  相似文献

The activity of methanogenic and methanotrophic bacteria was evaluated in bottom sediments of Lake Baikal. Methane concentration in Baikal bottom sediments varied from 0.0053 to 81.7 ml/dm3. Bacterial methane was produced at rates of 0.0004–534.7 l CH4/(dm3 day) and oxidized at rates of 0.005–1180 l CH4/(dm3 day). Peak methane production and oxidation were observed in Frolikha Bay near a methane vent. Methane was emitted into water at rates of 49.2–4340 l CH4/(m2 day). Rates of bacterial methane oxidation in near-bottom water layers ranged from 0.002 to 1.78 l/(l day). Methanogens and methanotrophs were found to play an important role in the carbon cycle through all layers of sediments, particularly in the areas of methane vent and gas-hydrate occurrence.  相似文献

Zonation of intertidal macrobenthos in the estuaries of Schelde and Ems   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Based on data, collected in 1980–1990, the intertidal benthic macrofauna of the Schelde and Ems estuaries was compared. The spatial occurrence of the benthic macrofauna along the salinity gradient, including the freshwater tidal area was emphasized. Both estuaries appeared to have a very similar species composition, especially at genus level. The higher number of species observed in the Schelde estuary was probably due to a greater habitat diversity. In both estuaries species diversity decreased with distance upstream. The total density did not vary along the estuarine gradient, whereas biomass is highest in the polyhaline zone.In both estuaries distinct intertidal benthic communities were observed along the salinity gradient: a marine community in the polyhaline zone, a brackish community in the mesohaline zone, and a third community in the oligohaline and freshwater tidal zones of the estuary. These three communities were very similar between both estuaries. Their main characteristics were discussed together with the occurrence and distribution of the dominant species.For the Schelde estuary and to a lesser extent also for the Ems estuary, there was evidence that anthropogenic stress had a negative effect on the intertidal macrobenthic communities of the oligohaline/freshwater tidal zone. Only Oligochaeta were dominating, whereas the very euryhaline and/or true limnetic species were missing. In the mesohaline zone, the Schelde estuary was dominated by large numbers of short-living, opportunistic species, whereas in the Ems estuary relatively more stable macrobenthic communities were observed. A comparison with some other European estuaries showed in general similar trends as those observed for the Schelde and Ems estuaries.  相似文献

The vertical distributions of ethylene and methane in the upper water column of the subtropical Atlantic were measured along a transect from Madeira to the Caribbean and compared with temperature, salinity, oxygen, nutrients, chlorophyll-a, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC).Methane concentrations between 41.6 and 60.7 nL L-1 were found in the upper 20 m of the water column giving a calculated average flux of methane into the atmosphere of 0.82 g m-2 h-1. Methane profiles reveal several distinct maxima in the upper 500 m of the water column and short-time variations which are presumably partly related to the vertical migration of zooplankton.Ethylene concentrations in near surface waters varied in the range of 1.8 to 8.2 nL L-1. Calculated flux rates for ethylene into the atmosphere were in the range of 0.41 to 1.35 g m-2 h-1 with a mean of 0.83 g m-2 h-1. Maximum concentrations of up to 39.2 nL L-1 were detected directly below the pycnocline in the western Atlantic. The vertical distributions of ethylene generally showed one maximum at the pycnocline (about 100 m depth) where elevated concentrations of chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen, and nutrients were also found; no ethylene was detected below 270 m depth. This suggests that ethylene release is mainly related to one, probably phytoplankton associated, source, while for methane, enhanced net production occurs at various depth horizons. For surface waters, a simple correlation between ethylene and chlorophyll-a or DOC concentrations could not be observed. No considerable diurnal variation was observed for the distribution and concentration of ethylene in the upper water column.  相似文献

Sulphate uptake by the unicellular marine red algaRhodella maculata conforms to Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Two uptake systems have been found: a low affinity system with an apparentK m of 22 mM, and a high affinity system with an apparentK m of 63.4 M. Transition from the low to the high affinity system can occur within 2.5 min, in response to a decrease in the ambient sulphate concentration to below 10 mM. Assimilation rates in the dark are about 20% those in the light, although enhancement by light is independent of the quanlity of light supplied above 27 mol m-2 s-1. A new phototrophic bacterium was isolated from Jordanian and Kenyan alkaline salt lakes. Cells are rod shaped, 1.5 m wide and 2–4 m long, and motile by polar flagella. They divide by binary fission, and possess photosynthetic membranes as lamellar stacks similar to those in the other species of the genus Ectothiorhodospira and the brown colored Rhodospirillum species. The presence of bacteriochlorophyll a and carotenoids of the normal spirilloxanthin series is indicated by the absorption spectra of living cells. Under certain growth conditions the cells form gas vacuoles, may become immotile and float to the top of the culture medium. Sulfide and thiosulfate are used as photosynthetic electron donors. During the oxidation of sulfide to sulfate, elemental sulfur is formed, which is accumulated outside the cells. The organisms are strictly anaerobic, do not require vitamins, are moderately halophilic and need alkaline pH-values for growth. The new species Ectothiorhodospira vacuolata is proposed.  相似文献

Acute and chronic arsenic exposure results in toxicity in humans and causes many neurological and other manifestations. For the first time the present study reports that zinc decreases arsenic-induced apoptosis and also confirms a single report of apoptosis induced by arsenic in a neuronal cell line. Apoptosis measured by DEVD-caspase activity peaked between 10 M and 20 M of arsenic trioxide. Higher concentrations of arsenic up to 40 M caused increasing cell death with diminishing DEVD-caspase activity. The beneficial effect of zinc was proportional to its concentration with a significant decrease in arsenic-induced DEVD-caspase activity at 50 M and 75 M zinc (P<0.05). This finding may be of therapeutic benefit in people suffering from chronic exposure to arsenic from natural sources, a global problem especially relevant to millions of people on the Indian subcontinent.  相似文献

Traditional measures of biotic indices (, , ) from phytosociological relevés are used to compare diversity at three scale-levels in the upper Rhine valley (Alsace, northeastern region) and the middle Loire (Bourgogne, central region), France. Both study areas included a tributary. The Ill, which is the Rhine tributary in this sector, has no forest communities in common with the main river because of opposite hydrological and edaphic characteristics. This is not the case in the Loire valley, in which the fluvial characteristics are close to those of its tributary, the Allier.Nearly all forest communities (12/14) were shown to be species-rich, due to the role of natural disturbances. Species richness peaks in late-successional forests of the Rhine valley (for example, up to 50 woody species in Querco-Ulmetum). Sixty per cent of the forest-communities are comon to the two floodplains, which explains why 85% of the families, 65% of the genera and 55% of the species are in common. Compared to the Loire valley, the Rhine valleys shows higher biotic diversity. This was related first to its geographical situation, and second to higher landscape heterogeneity. Human disturbance through river management is responsible for changes in species composition as shown by floristic comparison of flooded and unflooded sites. Insularity of natural forests among man-made landscapes is involved in species diversity. In order to preserve the natural diversity of such rich landscapes, floodable areas should be recreated and the attitudes of foresters should evolve accordingly.  相似文献

A study of the particulate organic carbon (POC) in the estuarine turbidity maxima (ETMs) of the three major French macrotidal estuaries shows that the average contents are 1.5, 3.3 and 3.1% (expressed in % of dry suspended sediment) in the Gironde, Loire and Seine Estuaries, respectively. There is no seasonal variation of POC contents in the Gironde Estuary, whereas, they often increase in the Loire and the Seine Estuaries in spring and summer. The lability of the estuarine particulate organic matter was estimated by two analyses: 1/labile organic matter was measured as the organic carbon loss during incubation tests over one month; 2/ the hydrolysable organic fraction was determined after 6N HCl digestion. The organic fractions of the ETMs are mainly refractory. Any increase in the amount of POC as compared to the background levels (cited above) is always correlated to an increase of organic matter lability. The yearly average fluvial contributions by various particulate organic pools (soil and litter organic matter; organic matter of phytoplanktonic and human origin) that enter the three estuaries were quantified. In the Garonne River, soil and litter are the major (90%) POC sources. In the Loire system, due to the eutrophication of the river water, phytoplankton contributes up to 50% of the total POC load. In the Seine river, soil and litter contribute 70% of the total POC input; POC of human origin is also significant (10%), due to the impact of the City of Paris (10 million inhabitants). The lability of the different types of organic matter ranks as follows: phytoplankton ∼litter > human-origin organic matter >> soil. By combining the POC budgets and the lability of each type of organic fraction, it was possible to explain why the POC of the three ETMs is different and characterizes its refractory vs. labile nature.  相似文献
