Laboratory experiments were performed in clear and turbid water to determine the effects of prey size, orientation, and movement on the reactive distance of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) when feeding on crayfish (Procambarus acutus). In clear water, the reactive distance increased linearly with an increase in prey size, and prey movement resulted in a significant increase in the reactive distance. Prey orientation (head-on versus perpendicular) did not change the reactive distances. In moderately turbid water, the reactive distance did not increase with increased prey size, and prey movement did not result in any changes in the reactive distance. The absence of any effects of prey orientation in clear water or prey movement in turbid water is inconsistent with results from studies using different species (primarily planktivorous fish). I propose that largemouth bass change their foraging tactics as prey visibility changes. When prey are highly visible (low turbidity), predators attack (react) only after prey recognition, which is based on multiple cues such as prey size (length, width) and movement. When prey are less visible (high turbidity), predators attack immediately upon initial prey sighting, which does not depend on prey size or movement. 相似文献

Reproductive regulation in the female Japanese minnow, Pseudorasbora parva (Cyprinidae) 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The Japanese minnow, Pseudorasbora parva, is a multiple spawner that lays eggs repeatedly during the spawning season. In laboratory aquaria, 19 of 63 females did not spawn, whereas 44 other females laid 167 to 6285 eggs in 1 to 14 mating sequences. Neither fish density nor sex ratio (number of males per female) affected fecundity, but the increase in fish density significantly decreased the growth rate of females. The increase in male length significantly increased fecundity in aquaria which contained only a single male, whereas it decreased female growth rate. These relationships were not evident in aquaria housing three or ten males. Since larger males were more dominant and had larger testes than smaller males, the correlation between fecundity and male size strongly suggests that individual females regulated fecundity to increase their reproductive success. 相似文献

Larval survival of four local populations ofEpilachna yasutomii in the southern part of Nagano Prefecture was evaluated on leaves of blue cohosh,Caulophyllum robustum, growing at two different sites, Takatoh and Nakatachi. Based on larval survival on leaves of TakatohC. robustum, TakatohE. Yasutomii was clearly distinguishable from the three populations in the Minami-Shinano area (Akasawa, Nakatachi and Tenryu). TakatohE. yasutomii developed successfully to emergence onC. robustum from both sites, while Minami-Shinano populations showed a very low survival rate when given TakatohC. robustum. Under controlled plant growth conditions, larval survival of AkasawaE. yasutomii was significantly reduced when givenC. robustum leaves, from either site, exposed to direct solar radiation, which suggested that larval survival was influenced by environmental conditions at the growing sites rather than genetic differences between the plant populations. In contrast, TakatohE. yasutomii developed well onC. robustum leaves from either site exposed to direct solar radiation. TakatohE. yasutomii appears to have some defensive mechanism that allows it to overcome a substance deterring larval development, which increases in leaves exposed to direct solar radiation. 相似文献

Holostephanus metorchis (Digenea: Cyathocotylidae) is a parasite of birds, transmitted by freshwater fishes. H. metorchis adults were recovered from chicks experimentally infected with metacercariae collected from freshwater fishes, Pseudorasbora parva. The metacercariae were oval, surrounded with thick fibrous capsules. In adult flukes, the holdfast organ occupied the ventral concavity, and the anterior testis did not reach the level of the ventral sucker. Based on these morphological characteristics, these flukes were identified as H. metorchis. 相似文献

Abstract: Extensive collections of Teretrius nigrescens in Mexico, Honduras, and Benin, were electrophoretically analysed to elucidate the prey spectrum of the predator. Both polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and cellulose acetate electrophoresis were used. Beetles were sampled with pheromone traps, using the synthetic aggregation pheromone of Prostephanus truncatus , and directly from farmers' maize stores. The proportion of electrophoretically detected prey protein from adult T. nigrescens in pheromone traps was low: of the 1108 specimens analysed, only in 34 cases, prey protein could be clearly identified. More frequently, prey protein was detected in adult T. nigrescens sampled in maize stores in Mexico, Honduras, and Benin, with 87 samples showing distinct prey bands of the total 1214 predators analysed. Of the 241 T. nigrescens larvae sampled in maize stores in Benin, 136 showed distinct bands of prey protein. In all samples, P. truncatus was the most frequently detected prey species. The second most often identified prey species was Sitophilus zeamais . The results are discussed with regard to various methods for prey spectrum analysis and specifically the biology of T. nigrescens . 相似文献

Development and reproduction of a predatory stinkbug, Podisus nigrispinus in relation to two different prey types and environmental conditions 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abiotic factors, prey availability, prey type, and plant host actsimultaneously under field conditions. Their combined effects werepartially investigated for the predatory stinkbugPodisus nigrispinus(Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) preying on tomato leafminer (TLM)caterpillars Tuta absoluta (Meyrick)(Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) (a preyfeeding on a plant host), and compared to yellow mealworm (YMW)Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)pupae (a prey not feeding ona plant host). These experiments were carried out in the laboratory and inan open-sided greenhouse. In general, the environmental variationsbetween laboratory and open-sided greenhouse did not induce differencesin life history characteristics forP. nigrispinus feeding on the sameprey type. However, development and reproductionof P. nigrispinuswas greatly affected by prey type. Nymphal developmental times weresimilar between prey types under laboratory conditions; but were longer(and produced adults of lower body weight) when predators in theopen-sided greenhouse were fed on TLM compared with YMW. Mean mortalityduring the second instar was higher on both prey types in the open-sidedgreenhouse than in the laboratory. Adult emergencewas 38.5 and 50% inthe laboratory, and 32.5 and 48.6%in the open-sided greenhouse for bugsfed on TLM and YMW, respectively. Reproductive characteristics weresimilar for the different environmental conditions when the predator fed onthe same prey, but offspring production was greater for females fed on YMWcompared to females fed on TLM. These results suggest thatP. nigrispinus can adjust its performance accordingto the type of prey available, independently from environmentalvariations. It has the ability to survive on alternative prey, enabling it to maintain a presence in thetomato ecosystem until a primary pest species arrives. 相似文献

In littoral zones of aquatic systems, submerged macrophytes have marked structural variation that can modify the foraging
activity of planktivores. Swimming and feeding behavior of Pseudorasbora parva and Rasbora daniconius (Cyprinidae) on their prey Daphnia pulex and Artemia salina, respectively, was studied in a series of laboratory experiments with varying stem densities. A range of stem densities was
tested for each of the two species to compare the effect of simulated macrophytes on prey attack rates and swimming speed,
average stem distance (D) was measured in fish body lengths for each of the two fish species. We found that, with reducing average stem distance,
the attack rate decreased in the similar trend and this trend was similar for both fish species. However, the species differed
in the degree to which swimming activity was hindered at increased stem densities, and this was due to species-specific differences
in the distance moved with one tail beat. Therefore, we conclude that the reductions in swimming speed with reduced average
stem distance are due to the differences in fish movement per tail beat. 相似文献

I examined the relationship between age, body size and fecundity in 833 female moose (Alces alces) from 14 populations in Sweden sampled during 1989–1992. Data on population density, food availability and climatic conditions were also collected for each population. Age and body mass were both significantly positively related to fecundity, measured as ovulation rate, among female moose. The relationship between the probability of ovulation and body mass was dependent on age with (1) a higher body mass needed in younger females for attaining a given fecundity, and (2) body mass having a stronger effect on fecundity in yearling (1.5 year) than in older (2.5 year) females. Thus, a 40 kg increase in yearling body mass resulted in a 42% increase in the probability of ovulation as compared to a 6% increase in older females. The lower reproductive effort per unit body mass, and the relatively stronger association between fecundity and body mass in young female moose compared to older ones, is likely to primarily represent a mechanism that trades off early maturation against further growth, indicating a higher cost of reproduction in young animals. In addition to age and body mass, population identity explained a significant amount of the individual variation in fecundity, showing that the relationship between body mass and fecundity was variable among populations. This variation was in turn related to the environment, in terms of climatic conditions forcing female moose living in relatively harsh/more seasonal climatic conditions to attain a 22% higher body mass to achive the same probability of multiple ovulation (twinning) as females living in climatically milder/less seasonal environments. The results suggests that the lower fecundity per unit body mass in female moose living in climatically harsh/more seasonal environments may be an adaptive response to lower rates of juvenile survival, compared to females experiencing relatively milder/less seasonal climatic conditions. 相似文献

We studied the decomposition process and macroinvertebrate colonisation of leaf packs to determine to what extent leaf consumption and invertebrate abundance depend on the pollution level, season, leaf type and patch size. We exposed 400 leaf packs made of two leaf types, alder and chestnut, at two sites of the Erro River (NW Italy) with different environmental alteration levels. Leaf packs were set out as three patch sizes (alone, or in groups of 6 or 12). A first experiment was carried out in winter and a second in summer. Leaf packs were retrieved after 15, 30, 45 and 60 days of submersion to determine the leaf mass loss and to quantify the associated macroinvertebrates. Natural riverbed invertebrates were collected in the same areas. Patch size, season, leaf type and pollution level significantly affected mass loss. The breakdown process was faster for alder leaves, during summer, at the unpolluted site, and in smaller patches. Leaf type and patch size did not affect macroinvertebrate density and richness, but the highest taxon richness was found in winter and at the unpolluted site. There were more shredders and predators than in the natural riverbed. Our study supports two recent ideas regarding leaf processing in streams: that patch size influences the leaf breakdown rate and that the breakdown rate can be used to evaluate water quality and environmental health. 相似文献

We studied the influences of food type, food quantity, water currents, starvation and light on growth and reproduction of
the sea hareaplysia oculifera (Adams and Reeve, 1850) under laboratory conditions. Out of five species of algae served as food,Enteromorpha intestinalis promoted the fastest growth ofA. oculifera, Ulva spp. slower growth,Cladophora sp. allowed maintenance spp. slower growth,Cladophora sp. allowed maintenance of steady body mass, and the brown algaeColpomenia sp. andPadina pavonia were rejected by the sea hares. When sea hares were exposed to four levels of water currents, growth rates decreased as water
currents increased. Sea hares fed on 50% ration grew slower than those fed on 100% ration (ad libitum). During 10 days of starvation sea hares lost weight, but when subsequently fed 100% ration they recovered and grew at a
rate similar to those fed continuously with 100% ration. Under shade and under natural sunlight sea hares grew at the same
rates. Whenever growth rates decreased, sea hares began to spawn at a smaller body size.A. oculifera demonstrated physiological plasticity that adapted them to varied and unpredictable environmental conditions. At different
conditions of food availability they applied different tactics of resource allocation between growth and reproduction. 相似文献

Synopsis Changes in the daily appetite and weekly growth rates of individual adult minnows,Phoxinus phoxinus, on ad libitum rations were recorded before and after they had experienced 4 or 16 days of food restriction. Feeding levels during the restriction periods were either starvation or a maintenance ration. The latter was estimated from a previously determined regression model. Water temperature was 15°C and the photoperiod 9L15D in all experiments. The mean weight of fish used ranged from 1.06 to 2.15 g. The 4 day restriction had no detectable effects on appetite or growth. After the 16 day restriction, the minnows showed hyperphagia and had increased specific growth rates and growth efficiencies compared with control fish. The compensatory increases in appetite and growth were not sustained and within three weeks had declined to levels not significantly different from those of the control fish. At the end of the experiments, there were no significant differences between the mean weights or cumulative food consumption of the restricted and control groups. The results suggest that adult minnows regulate their appetite and growth rate in relation to their previous nutritional history. 相似文献

The relationships between the shell height of the predatory gastropod Cryptonatica janthostoma and the shell length of its typical prey, the bivalve Ruditapes philippinarum, and the diameter of the borehole on the prey shell resulting from a successful attack of the predator were experimentally found and assessed statistically. The shell height of C. janthostoma calculated retrospectively from the borehole diameter using the obtained relationships was 17–52 mm. The prey of C. janthostoma are burrowing bivalves, whose populations are affected by the predator to a varying degree. In populations of medium-sized mollusks (R. philippinarum, Protothaca euglypta, P. jedoensis, and others), C. janthostoma feeds on mollusks larger than 7–10 mm; in species with a shell length greater than 100 mm (Callista brevisiphonata, Saxidomus purpuratus), it eats specimens of 10–58 mm. C. janthostoma apparently has no effect on populations of small-sized mollusks (Anisocorbula venusta) and mollusks with an active avoidance response (Clinocardium californiense). 相似文献

The depth distribution of the common bully, Gobiomorphus cotidianus, a small benthic forage fish, was measured by trapping at set depths from 0–70m in three large oligotrophic lakes, including one where inorganic sediment from a glacially-fed river produces turbid conditions. Bullies occurred at all depths from 0.5–70m in the clear lakes, but none were present below 25m in the turbid lake. Two groups of bullies were present in the clear lakes; a high-density, littoral stock at depths of 0.5–25m, and a low-density, profundal stock at depths of 30–70m. These groups were further distinguished by differing buoyancy requirements and feeding habits. The swimbladders of littoral bullies contained gas, but those of the profundal bullies, which fed more than littoral bullies by both day and night, did not. The variation in mean CPUE with depth within the littoral zone was not related to water temperature, oxygen concentration, or conductivity. Nor was it related to a reduction in light levels or to reduced water transparency caused by increased turbidity. It may therefore be controlled by biotic factors. The absence of a profundal stock below the littoral zone in the turbid lake indicates that the settlement of fines from turbid inputs may affect bully abundance in deeper waters. As conventional measures of the abundance of benthic fish in lakes are often restricted to littoral habitats, and do not reflect changes in abundance with depth, an index of overall abundance based on depth distribution was developed to allow comparisons between lakes. 相似文献

Cryptognatha nodiceps Marshall is an important natural enemy used in biological control programmes against Aspidiotus destructor (Signoret), an introduced pest of coconut in many countries. In order to increase our understanding of C. nodiceps, the present study to quantify aspects of the developmental, reproductive and feeding biology under constant environmental conditions (26±2°C, 55-65% RH) was carried out. In addition, methods for culturing the scale and the beetle were developed. The average duration of development was 19.2±0.1 days for males and 19.6±0.2 days for females. Female longevity and lifetime fecundity was 35.6±5.1 days and 141.0±35.6 eggs, respectively. Life table statistics were as follows: reproductive rate, 9.99, intrinsic rate of increase, 0.09, finite rate of increase, 1.1, doubling time, 7.8 days and generation time, 41.1 days. Studies on feeding biology showed that C. nodiceps was oligophagous. The coccinellid fed and reproduced on prey species in two families, Diaspididae and Coccidae. Adults also fed on the coconut whitefly Aleurodicus cocois (Curtis) (Aleyrodidae) but no reproduction occurred on this prey. Aphididae, Psyllidae and Pseudococcidae were not fed upon. 相似文献

Circadian rhythms have been observed in most mammals, but their importance and function remain controversial with respect
to daily cycles during hibernation. We investigated the timing of arousals from and entries into hibernation for both free-living
and captive mountain pygmy-possums (Burramys parvus). Under both natural and laboratory conditions most arousals and entries were entrained with the light-dark cycle. Entries
occurred mainly during the night and arousals preferably around dusk, which coincides with the onset of the normal activity
phase for the nocturnal pygmy-possums. This entrainment prevailed throughout the hibernation season although only the laboratory
animals were constantly subjected to photoperiodic stimuli, whereas under natural conditions hibernacula are shielded from
photic cues and diurnal temperature fluctuations. Nevertheless, possums left their hibernacula frequently throughout winter
and were occasionally trapped close to the snow surface suggesting that during the periods of post-arousal normothermia they
can be exposed to environmental stimuli. It thus appears that the synchronisation with the photocycle was governed by a temperature-compensated
circadian clock which was reset periodically during short activity periods. For the mountain pygmy-possum, entrainment with
the photocycle probably has two functions:
1. Entrainment ensures that foraging bouts during the hibernation season remain synchronised with the dark phase.
2. Information about the prevailing climatic conditions sampled during short activity periods enables them to time final spring
emergence from hibernation when snow melt begins and ensures that the breeding season can commence as early as possible.

Quantifying the effect of pollen dispersal and flowering traits on mating success is essential for understanding evolutionary responses to changing environments and establishing strategies for forest tree breeding. This study examined, quantitatively, the effects of male fecundity, interindividual distance and anisotropic pollen dispersal on the mating success of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), utilizing a well-mapped Scots pine seed orchard. Paternity analysis of 1021 seeds sampled from 87 trees representing 28 clones showed that 53% of the seeds had at least one potential pollen parent within the orchard. Pronounced variation in paternal contribution was observed among clones. Variations in pollen production explained up to 78% of the variation in mating success, which was 11.2 times greater for clones producing the largest amount of pollen than for clones producing the least pollen. Mating success also varied with intertree distance and direction, which explained up to 28% of the variance. Fertilization between neighboring trees 2.3 m apart was 2.4 times more frequent than between trees 4.6 m apart, and up to 12.4 times higher for trees downwind of the presumed prevailing wind direction than for upwind trees. The effective number of pollen donors recorded in the seed orchard (12.2) was smaller than the theoretical expectation (19.7). Based on the empirical observations, a mating model that best describes the gene dispersal pattern in clonal seed orchards was constructed. 相似文献

Abstract.
- 1 Unlike most parasitoids, tachinid flies of the tribe Ormiini use sound to locate their hosts. Although thought to exert selection pressure on their host's calling behaviour, little is known about the biology of ormiines. Accordingly, this study reports the biology and impact of the ormiine Hornotrixa sp. upon calling males of the univoltine bushcricket Sciarasaga quadrata Rentz in south-western Australia.
- 2 Populations of adult S.quadrata were monitored in the field over two successive calling seasons. Females, which do not call, were not parasitized by Hornotrixa sp., but the risk of parasitism for males increased as the 3-month calling season progressed. Parasitism did not commence until c. 2 weeks into the calling season, but by the end of the season up to 87% of surviving males were parasitized.
- 3 Parasitized males lived for 14 days and were found singing until their penultimate evening before death in the field. Unparasitized males lived on average 69 days and a maximum of 119 days.
- 4 Multiparasitism of hosts was common, with up to sixteen fly larvae found within parasitized males. The number of fly larvae within hosts significantly increased at the end of the season. However, successful emergence of fly larvae from hosts, as well as pupal size, significantly decreased as more than one fly larva developed within the host.
- 5 Hornotrixa sp. has a long pupal duration of 30–31 days at 20°C. As a consequence, only one complete fly generation, which overwinters in the pupal stage, is likely within each host generation.
- 6 No evidence for differential (size-bias) mortality by Hornotrixa sp. on male S.quadrata was found. The size of parasitized and unparasitized males collected in the field was not significantly different.
- 7 It is concluded that Hornotrixa sp. is a significant mortality factor acting on the survival of adult male S.quadrata.

The occurrence of the actiniarian Alicia mirabilis in the Aegean Sea is documented for the first time from five sites in the Saronikos Gulf. The density of A. mirabilis was assessed in one site (Lychnari bay) with line transects (underwater distance sampling with SCUBA). Its density ranged between 0 and 4.3 individuals are-1 (1 are=100 m2) with a mean of 1.1±0.5 individuals are-1. The species was found in a variety of substrates (sandy bottoms, weeds, seagrass beds, rocks, litter) and its distribution was aggregated. Distance sampling was an efficient way to estimate the density of A. mirabillis and is proposed as a good choice for density estimations of actiniarians and other benthic fauna. 相似文献
