The wetlands of 21 countries and territories of the Pacific Islands region are reviewed: American Samoa, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Guam, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, Northern Mariana Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Wallis and Futuna. The regions’ wetlands are classified into seven systems: coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangrove swamps, riverine, lacustrine, freshwater swamp forests and marshes. The diversity of species in each of these groups is at near global maxima at the west of the region, with decline towards the east with increasing isolation, and decreasing island size and age. The community structure is unique in each country, and many have endemic species with the habitat isolation that epitomises this island region. There remain, however, some serious gaps in basic inventory, particularly in freshwater biodiversity. Threats to wetlands include introduced freshwater species, loss of wetlands adjacent to urban growth, downstream effects of mining and land clearance, and over-use of mangrove, seagrass and coral reef resources by predominant subsistence economies that remain in this region. Only five countries are signatories to the Ramsar convention on wetlands, and this only recently with seven sites. Wetland managers have identified the need for community education, baseline surveys and monitoring, better legislation and policy for wetland management, and improved capacity of local communities to allow the wise use of their wetlands.  相似文献

The Pacific Ocean evolved from the Panthalassic Ocean that was first formed ca 750 Ma with the rifting apart of Rodinia. By 160 Ma, the first ocean floor ascribed to the current Pacific plate was produced to the west of a spreading centre in the central Pacific, ultimately growing to become the largest oceanic plate on the Earth. The current Nazca, Cocos and Juan de Fuca (Gorda) plates were initially one plate, produced to the east of the original spreading centre before becoming split into three. The islands of the Pacific have originated as: linear chains of volcanic islands on the above plates either by mantle plume or propagating fracture origin, atolls, uplifted coralline reefs, fragments of continental crust, obducted portions of adjoining lithospheric plates and islands resulting from subduction along convergent plate margins. Out of the 11 linear volcanic chains identified, each is briefly described and its history summarized. The geology of 10 exemplar archipelagos (Japan, Izu-Bonin, Palau, Solomons, Fiji, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Society, Galápagos and Hawaii) is then discussed in detail.  相似文献

Fish stocks and dinoflagellates are essential components of the marine food chain. Sediment cores from a predominantly anoxic basin in Effingham Inlet, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, archive a late Holocene (500–5300 years BP) record of paleoproductivity in the North American Coastal Upwelling Domain (CUD). We present evidence that late Holocene changes in the dinoflagellate cyst assemblages, sedimentary record, and fish stocks in the northeastern Pacific Ocean fluctuated, at least partially, in accordance with regional and global climate cycles.Principal components analysis (PCA), and trend, wavelet and spectral analyses were used to identify relationships, cycles and trends in sediment grey-scale values, and the abundances of fish scales and dinoflagellate cysts on centennial to millennial time scales. Most observed cycles fluctuated in intensity over time, particularly following transition of the regional climate to a higher rainfall phase that impacted coastal oceanic dynamics 3400 ± 150 years ago. Correlation of the marine paleoproductivity records observed in Effingham Inlet with solar influenced climate proxy cycles observed in the North Atlantic region indicates that solar forcing at different scales might have influenced the climate in the northeast Pacific as well. In particular an 1100- to 1400-year cycle in regional climate is well represented in the fish productivity proxy and sedimentological record. It was also observed that colder water, high-productivity, Selenopemphix nephroides and anchovy-dominated “Anchovy Regime” ecosystems alternate with warmer water, herring-dominated “Herring Regime” ecosystems at millennial time scales. The fish scale record preserved in Effingham Inlet indicates that the NE Pacific is now in transition from an ‘anchovy-’ to a ‘herring’-dominated regime.  相似文献

This article discusses the interrelatedness of two sorts of speculation undertaken by Malagasy sapphire miners and traders involved in the northern Malagasy sapphire trade: first, the speculating that these people do in sapphires, and, second, the speculating that they do about the uses to which sapphires are put by foreigners. Although Malagasy people involved in the local trade know a great deal about how sapphires might be profitably traded, most of them do not know why foreigners are so interested in these stones. Dubious of foreign traders' assurances that sapphires are used in the production of jewelry, they speculate a variety of alternate, secret uses for them. In this article, it is argued that these speculations emerge out of a variety of locally developed assumptions about how the sapphire trade works, and specifically, the significant roles that deception and knowledge differentials play in its operation.  相似文献

Aim To provide evidence suggesting the existence of a dynamic system of extinction and replacement. Location The Indo-West Pacific Ocean. Methods Utilization of species distribution patterns produced by detailed systematic works. Results The distribution patterns appear to suggest a sequence of events that is consistent with the centre of origin hypothesis. The East Indies centre is considered to operate according to the centrifugal speciation model. Main conclusions Disjunct patterns appear to have originated in the East Indies and spread out from there. In cases where the vacated area is occupied by a sibling species, competitive (sympatric) speciation may have occurred. Over time the extinction pattern will gradually extend outward until it is played out among small populations far from their centre of origin  相似文献

Results of long-term research on the spatial and vertical distribution of the Pacific lamprey Lampetra tridentata (Richardson, 1836) (the family Petromyzontidae) in the North Pacific, and data on its size structure are submitted. It was shown, that L. tridentate reached its greatest number in the Bering Sea. The maximum concentration of the Pacific lamprey was observed all year round about Navarin Cape, in the Koryak shelf area, at the East Aleutian Islands and at the west coast of the USA, which, apparently, spoke of the increased number of its prey there. On the bottom, the Pacific lamprey was the most numerous at depths of less than 500 m, and in the pelagic, in the upper 100-meter layer. The length of individuals varied in catches from 12 up to 85 cm. The existence of several size groups may indicate that the Pacific lamprey spend several years in the sea. No correlation was revealed between the length of body and fishing depth. The correlations between body length and body weight, body length and condition factor were analyzed. Seasonal dynamics of these parameters were considered.  相似文献

Recent marine planktonic diatom assemblages from 47 sediment surface samples retrieved from the eastern equatorial Pacific yielded four significant Q-mode factors that are related to surface water properties. They include a northern subtropical (Factor 1), a southern subtropical (Factor 2), a Peru Current (Factor 3) and an eastern Equatorial Pacific (Factor 4) factor.A transfer function (based on 42 surface sediment samples) with a productivity range of 109 to 210 gC m–2 y–1 was defined using the geographic distribution of the northern and southern subtropical assemblages (Factor 1 and 2) and their relation to mapped surface water primary productivity. This transfer function has a standard error of estimate of 11.9 gC m–2 y–1 and it is used to estimate late Pleistocene paleo-productivity changes at ODP Leg 111 Site 677 off Ecuador. The Site 677 samples (usually spaced 10 cm apart and with a linear sedimentation rate of 4.3 cm y–3) were the same samples that were used for stable oxygen/carbon isotopic analysis from planktonic Foraminifera. The well constrained oxygen isotope stratigraphy permitted assignment of accurate ages to downcore samples. The interval between oxygen isotope stages 3 and 9 had variable productivity that is generally higher than present values of 175 gC m–2 y–1 A major decline in paleo-productivity below the present value occurred in stage 9, the early part of stage 8 and in the early and late stage 5.  相似文献

The current bioclimates of equatorial Western and tropical South Pacific have been assessed, using the concepts of effective temperature and relative strain as a basis for evaluating likely changes in human comfort regimes as a consequence of global warming. Current bioclimates may be considered marginally stressful for indigenous populations. Global warming will result in changes in the frequency, duration and intensity of physioclimatically stressful conditions.  相似文献

1. We used historical sources, morphology‐based taxonomy and mtDNA sequence data to address questions about the signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus. These included evaluating unrecognised cryptic diversity and investigating the extent to which P. leniusculus may have been introduced within its presumed native range in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. Our study builds and expands on Pacific Northwest phylogeographic knowledge, particularly related to patterns of glacial refugia for freshwater species. 2. Extensive collections (824 specimens) from British Columbia (Canada), Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington (United States) were used to characterise P. leniusculus at the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene. Genetic groups within the species were elucidated by phylogenetics and amova ; evolutionary relationships within the most common and diverse group were investigated using a statistical parsimony haplotype network, a nested amova , and tests of isolation by distance. Morphological measurements were used to relate findings of molecular analyses to three historically recognised P. leniusculus subspecies and characterise cryptic diversity by morphology. 3. We found substantial cryptic diversity, with three groups highly distinct from P. leniusculus in discrete geographic regions: the Chehalis River glacial refugium, Central Oregon and the Okanagan Plateau. Disjunct distributions of P. leniusculus relative to these cryptic groups and known patterns of Pleistocene glaciation and landscape evolution cast doubt on whether P. leniusculus is native to some areas such as coastal drainages of northern Washington and southern British Columbia. Morphological traits previously used to characterise P. leniusculus subspecies still persist but may be incapable of distinguishing P. leniusculus from newly discovered cryptic groups. 4. Cryptic diversity found within P. leniusculus highlights the pressing need for a thorough investigation of the genus Pacifastacus using data based on more extensive gene and taxon sampling. It also warrants conservation attention, as introductions of P. leniusculus within the Pacific Northwest may carry risks of hybridisation and introgression for cryptic groups. Owing to high genetic diversity and limited dispersal capacity relative to more vagile organisms like freshwater fish, crayfish of the genus Pacifastacus offer powerful potential insights into the geological history and phylogeography of the Pacific Northwest region. Finally, by shedding light on the long‐neglected native range of P. leniusculus, our results should also better inform our understanding of potential source populations for, and the ecology of, this important invasive species in regions including Europe, Japan and elsewhere in North America.  相似文献

Abstract

The taxonomic status and synonymy of Williamia Monterosato, 1884 are discussed. Williamia is retained in preference to Allerya Mörch, 1877 and Brondelia Bourguignat, 1862, both of which have priority. Roya Iredale, 1912 is transferred from Trochidae to Siphonariidae as a synonym of Williamia. Roya kermadecensis Iredale, 1912 is synonymised with Capulus nutatus Hedley, 1908, which in turn is placed as a geographic subspecies of W. radiata Pease, 1861. Allerya japonica Habe, 1962 is considered a probable synonym of W. radiata. W. maxwelli n.sp. is described from the Upper Oligocene to Lower Miocene of New Zealand. Roya spongotheras Bertsch, 1980 is transferred to an undescribed genus of the Tylodinidae.  相似文献

The literature on economic feasibility of farming seaweeds like Kappaphycus alvarezii in tropical locations is mainly based upon Asian case studies, and often does not take into account social factors in seaweed farming success. Pacific island countries are culturally and economically distinct from Asia, and efforts are now being made to establish seaweed industries here. Past experiences have showed that social factors often outweigh technical factors in determining the success of rural development projects. In addition, Pacific island communities are very diverse in their socio-economic make-up. The particular community chosen for location of a development project is therefore critical to success. Project managers need to recognize in advance the best type of community for seaweed farming development. The objective of this study was to identify socio economic factors that can be used as predictors of project success or failure. Using results of social survey techniques carried out in eight communities within the Fiji Group, a rapid survey technique has been developed which can enable decisions about whether a community is suitable for farming seaweed or not. Though developed from Fiji case studies, the technique can be applied in other rural Asia/Pacific situations.  相似文献

The coral-treaders (Hermatobatidae) are the only exclusively marine family of insects. Observations in the Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga and Fiji show that the insects can be abundant on shores that provide rocks with cavities that remain air-filled during high tide. The zone of suitable habitats for the insects is restricted to a narrow ( c. 20 cm) vertical band roughly centred around Mean Low Water Neaps. Transplant experiments show that the insects are unable to survive above or below this zone. The insects emerge from their rocky crevices about an hour before low tide, swim on the water surface during low tide, and return to their crevices about an hour after the tide has turned. There are only four larval instars, which can be readily separated by their morphology. Electron microscope studies show that the insects are clothed in a layer of micro-hairs of unique design: a short tapering shaft tipped with a sphere. These micro-hairs may act as a plastron: their distribution corresponds precisely to the pattern of the silvery 'air-layer' seen when the insects are submerged, their spherical tips provide a regular array that could support an air-water interface, they occur at high densities (up to 3.5 times 106 mm-2), and the layer makes connection with the thoracic spiracles. Half the insects were able to survive submergence in recirculated seawater for 12 hours. The adults appear to swim further from shore than the larvae, and they were observed copulating in tidal pools.  相似文献

The remote Pitcairn Group in the South Pacific Ocean comprises a volcanic island (Pitcairn Island), two low coral atolls (Oeno, Ducie) and a raised coralline island (Henderson Island). The geological history of these islands, on anomalously thin oceanic lithosphere, is related to the development of two subparallel island chains (Oeno-Henderson-Ducie; Pitcairn) associated with intra-Pacific plate 'hotspot' activity; the surface manifestation of this activity has been partly determined by structural lineations in the plate inherited from past plate history. The climate of the Pitcairn Islands is determined by the position of the subtropical high pressure system and the South Pacific Convergence Zone. Variations in the strength of this atmospheric circulation system, measured by changes in the Southern Oscillation index of pressure difference, provide a partial explanation of the long-term variability of mean annual rainfall at Pitcairn Island. Knowledge of past climates in the Pitcairn Group remains speculative. Maps of the Pitcairn Islands and a report of climate at Henderson Island (2/91-1/92) are included in the paper.  相似文献

New information on the presence and relative abundances of 41 reef-building (zooxanthellate) coral species at 11 eastern Pacific and 3 central Pacific localities is examined in a biogeographic analysis and review of the eastern Pacific coral reef region. The composition and origin of the coral fauna and other reef-associated taxa are assessed in the context of dispersal and vicariance hypotheses. A minimum variance cluster analysis using coral species presence–absence classification data at the 14 localities revealed three eastern Pacific reef-coral provinces: (1) equatorial– mainland Ecuador to Costa Rica, including the Galápagos and Cocos Islands; (2) northern– mainland México and the Revillagigedo Islands; (3) island group– eastern Pacific Malpelo Island and Clipperton Atoll, and central Pacific Hawaiian, Johnston and Fanning Islands. Coral species richness is relatively high in the equatorial (17–26 species per locality) and northern (18–24 species) provinces, and low at two small offshore island localities (7–10 species). A high proportion (36.6%, 15 species) of eastern Pacific coral species occurs at only one or two localities; of these, three disappeared following the 1982–83 ENSO event, three occur as death assemblages at several localities, and five are endangered with known populations of ten or fewer colonies. Principal component analysis using ordinal relative density data for the 41 species at the 14 localities indicated three main species groupings, i.e., those with high, mid, and narrow spatial distributions. These groupings correlated with species population-dynamic characteristics. These results were compared with data for riverine discharges, ocean circulation patterns, shoreline habitat characteristics, and regional sea surface temperature data to help clarify the analyses as these measures of environmental variability affect coral community composition. Local richness was highest at localities with the highest environmental variability. Recent information regarding the strong affinity between eastern and central Pacific coral faunas, abundance of teleplanic larvae in oceanic currents, high genetic similarity of numerous reef-associated species, and appearances of numerous Indo-west Pacific species in the east Pacific following ENSO activity, suggest the bridging of the east Pacific filter bridge (formerly east Pacific barrier).
