The elastic moduli of human subchondral, trabecular, and cortical bone tissue from a proximal tibia were experimentally determined using three-point bending tests on a microstructural level. The mean modulus of subchondral specimens was 1.15 GPa, and those of trabecular and cortical specimens was 4.59 GPa and 5.44 GPa respectively. Significant differences were found in the modulus values between bone tissues, which may have mainly resulted from the differences in the microstructures of each bone tissue rather than in the mineral density. Furthermore, the size-dependency of the modulus was examined using eight different sizes of cortical specimens (heights h = 100-1000 microns). While the modulus values for relatively large specimens (h greater than 500 microns) remained fairly constant (approximately 15 GPa), the values decreased as the specimens became smaller. A significant correlation was found between the modulus and specimen size. The surface area to volume ratio proved to be a key variable to explain the size-dependency.  相似文献

In this study, we developed a numerical framework that computationally determines simultaneous and interactive structural changes of cortical and trabecular bone types during bone remodeling, and we investigated the structural correlation between the two bone types in human proximal femur. We implemented a surface remodeling technique that performs bone remodeling in the exterior layer of the cortical bone while keeping its interior area unchanged. A micro-finite element (μFE) model was constructed that represents the entire cortical bone and full trabecular architecture in human proximal femur. This study simulated and compared the bone adaptation processes of two different structures: (1) femoral bone that has normal cortical bone shape and (2) perturbed femoral bone that has an artificial bone lump in the inferomedial cortex. Using the proposed numerical method in conjunction with design space optimization, we successfully obtained numerical results that resemble actual human proximal femur. The results revealed that actual cortical bone, as well as the trabecular bone, in human proximal femur has structurally optimal shapes, and it was also shown that a bone abnormality that has little contribution to bone structural integrity tends to disappear. This study also quantitatively determined the structural contribution of each bone: when the trabecular adaptation was complete, the trabecular bone supported 54% of the total load in the human proximal femur while the cortical bone carried 46%.  相似文献

Summary The morphological relationship between the osteoclasts at the endosteal surface of two-week-old rabbit femurs and the endothelium of vascular channels of the bone marrow was examined. Light microscopy revealed that 85% of the osteoclasts make direct contact with the endothelial cells. The ultrastructure of this osteoclast-endothelium interface shows that the osteoclast has specialized processes which reach out towards the endothelial cells coming into close proximity with them. On rare occasions, specialized junctions between these processes and the endothelial cells are noted.Study supported by the joint research fund of the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine founded by the Alpha-Omega Fraternity and the Hadassah Medical OrganizationI would like to thank Mr. Milo Sadownick for his excellent technical assistance  相似文献

Despite a general understanding that bone quality contributes to skeletal fragility, very little information exits on the age-dependent fatigue behavior of human bone. In this study four-point bending fatigue tests were conducted on aging bone in conjunction with the analysis of stiffness loss and preliminary investigation of nanoindentation based measurements of local tissue stiffness and histological evaluation of resultant tensile and compressive damage to identify the damage mechanism responsible for the increase in age-related bone fragility. The results obtained show that there is an exponential decrease in fatigue life with age, and old bone exhibits different modulus degradation profiles than young bone. In addition, this study provides preliminary evidence indicating that during fatigue loading, younger bone formed diffuse damage, lost local tissue stiffness on the tensile side. Older bone, in contrast, formed linear microcracks lost local tissue stiffness on the compressive side. Thus, the propensity of aging human bone to form more linear microcracks than diffuse damage may be a significant contributor to bone quality, and age related fragility in bone.  相似文献

Bone mechanical properties are typically evaluated at relatively low strain rates. However, the strain rate related to traumatic failure is likely to be orders of magnitude higher and this higher strain rate is likely to affect the mechanical properties. Previous work reporting on the effect of strain rate on the mechanical properties of bone predominantly used nonhuman bone. In the work reported here, the effect of strain rate on the tensile and compressive properties of human bone was investigated. Human femoral cortical bone was tested longitudinally at strain rates ranging between 0.14-29.1 s(-1) in compression and 0.08-17 s(-1) in tension. Young's modulus generally increased, across this strain rate range, for both tension and compression. Strength and strain (at maximum load) increased slightly in compression and decreased (for strain rates beyond 1 s(-1)) in tension. Stress and strain at yield decreased (for strain rates beyond 1 s(-1)) for both tension and compression. In general, there seemed to be a relatively simple linear relationship between yield properties and strain rate, but the relationships between postyield properties and strain rate were more complicated and indicated that strain rate has a stronger effect on postyield deformation than on initiation of yielding. The behavior seen in compression is broadly in agreement with past literature, while the behavior observed in tension may be explained by a ductile to brittle transition of bone at moderate to high strain rates.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Haversian remodeling on the tensile properties of human cortical bone by testing specimens containing, as far a possible, a single type of bone tissue. Fifty-one specimens were prepared from sixteen fresh tibias, removed at autopsy. Age range was 19-35. Regions were selected so that the specimens would consist almost exclusively of either primary bone or Haversian bone. The ultimate tensile strength, ultimate strain and Young's modulus of elasticity were determined at a loading rate of 0.05 mm s-1. The primary bone specimens were found to have a significantly higher ultimate tensile strength and modulus of elasticity than those formed of Haversian bone.  相似文献

The role of cytokinins in chloroplast lamellar development   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The accumulation of chlorophyll, production of two specific lamellar chlorophyll-protein complexes, onset of O(2) evolution, and detection of P700 were examined in intact Jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis [L.] D.C.) leaves treated with 10(-5)m kinetin or benzyladenine and allowed to green under low (30-35%) and high (80-85%) relative humidity. In contrast to reports of the promotion of chlorophyll accumulation by cytokinin treatment in excised tissue or cotyledons, intact greening leaves showed neither promotion of chlorophyll accumulation nor alteration in formation of the lamellar chlorophyll-protein complexes or development of photosynthetic function. Furthermore, cytokinin was ineffective in relieving the consequences of low relative humidity water stress on chlorophyll accumulation and on the formation of at least one lamellar chlorophyll-protein.  相似文献

A flexural model of four-point bending fatigue that has been experimentally validated for human cortical bone under load control was used to determine how load and displacement control testing affects the fatigue behavior of human cortical bone in three-point and symmetric four-point bending. Under load control, it was predicted that three-point bending produced no significant differences in fatigue life when compared to four-point bending. However, three-point bending produced less stiffness loss with increasing cycles than four-point bending. In four-point bending, displacement control was predicted to produce about one and a half orders of magnitude greater fatigue life when compared to load control. This prediction agrees with experimental observations of equine cannon bone tested in load and displacement control (Gibson et al., 1998). Displacement controlled three-point bending was found to produce approximately a 25% greater fatigue life when compared to load control. The prediction of longer fatigue life under displacement control may have clinical relevance for the repair of damaged bone. The model can also be adapted to other geometric configurations, including modeling of whole long bones, and with appropriate fatigue data, other cortical bone types.  相似文献

Human compact bone may be viewed as a fiber reinforced composite material in which the secondary osteons act as the fiber reinforcements. The cement line, which is the interface between the 'fibers' (osteons) and extraosteonal bone matrix, may impart important mechanical properties to compact bone. The nature of these properties is not known partly because the composition of the cement line is unknown. This analysis examines the constituents of the osteon cement line using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microprobe analysis to address its biomechanical functions as a local interface. The analysis suggests that the cement line is a region of reduced mineralization which may contain sulfated mucosubstances. This composition is consistent with the hypothesis that the cement line provides a relatively ductile interface with surrounding bone matrix, and that it provides the point specific stiffness differences, poor 'fiber'-matrix bonding and energy transfer qualities required to promote crack initiation but slow crack growth in compact bone.  相似文献

Water, collagen and mineral are the three major components of bone. The structural organization of water and its functions within the bone were investigated using the environmental scanning electron microscope and by analyzing dimensional changes that occur when fresh equine osteonal bone is dehydrated and then rehydrated. These changes are attributed mainly to loss of bulk and weakly bound water. In longitudinal sections a contraction of 1.2% was observed perpendicular to the lamellae, whereas no contraction occurred parallel to the lamellae. In transverse sections a contraction of 1.4% was observed both parallel and perpendicular to the lamellae. SEM back scattered electron images showed that about half of an individual lamella is less mineralized, and thus has more water than the other half. We therefore propose that contractions perpendicular to lamellae are due to the presence of more water-filled rather than mineral-filled channels within the mineralized collagen fibril arrays. As these channels are also aligned with the crystal planes, the crystal arrays, oriented as depicted in the rotated plywood model for lamellar bone, facilitate or hinder contraction in different directions.  相似文献

An understanding of how fatigue cracks grow in bone is of importance as fatigue is thought to be the main cause of clinical stress fractures. This study presents new results on the fatigue-crack growth behavior of small surface cracks (approximately 75-1000 microm in size) in human cortical bone, and compares their growth rates with data from other published studies on the behavior of both surface cracks and many millimeter, through-thickness large cracks. Results are obtained with a cyclically loaded cantilever-beam geometry using optical microscopy to examine for crack growth after every 100-500 cycles. Based on the current and previous results, small fatigue cracks appear to become more resistant to fatigue-crack growth with crack extension, analogous to the way the fracture resistance of cortical bone increases with crack growth. Mechanistically, a theory attributing such behavior to the development of bridges in the wake of the crack with crack growth is presented. The existence of such bridges is directly confirmed using optical microscopy.  相似文献

The use of artificial bones in implant testing has become popular due to their low variability and ready availability. However, friction coefficients, which are critical to load transfer in uncemented implants, have rarely been compared between human and artificial bone, particularly for wet and dry conditions. In this study, the static and dynamic friction coefficients for four commercially used titanium surfaces (polished, Al(2)O(3) blasted, plasma sprayed, beaded) acting on the trabecular component of artificial bones (Sawbones) were compared to those for human trabecular bone. Artificial bones were tested in dry and wet conditions and normal interface stress was varied (0.25, 0.5, 1.0MPa). Friction coefficients were mostly lower for artificial bones than real bone. In particular, static friction coefficients for the dry polished surface were 20% of those for real bone and 42-61% for the dry beaded surface, with statistical significance (alpha<0.05). Less marked differences were observed for dynamic friction coefficients. Significant but non-systematic effects of normal stress or wet/dry condition on friction coefficients were observed within each surface type. These results indicate that the use of artificial bone models for pre-clinical implant testing that rely on interface load transfer with trabecular bone for mechanical integrity can be particularly sensitive to surface finish and lubrication conditions.  相似文献

The heterogeneity of bone shape and size variation is modulated by genetic, mechanical, nutritional, and hormonal patterning throughout its lifetime. Microstructural changes across cross sections are a result of mechanistic optimization that results over the years of evolution while being based on universal, time-invariant ingredients and patterns. Here we report changes across anatomical sections of bone with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) that undermines the work of evolution through genetic mutation. This work examines the microstructure and molecular composition of different anatomical positions (anterior, medial, posterior, and lateral regions) in the diaphysis of an OI human tibia. The study shows that although there is no significant microstructural difference, molecular changes are observed using FTIR revealing differences in molecular composition of the four anatomical positions. In addition, the nanomechanical properties of anterior section of OI bone seem more heterogeneous. The nanomechanical properties of interstitial lamellae in all these bone samples are consistently greater than those of osteonal lamellae. The nanomechanical properties of bone depend on its anatomical section and on the measurement direction as well. Variations in molecular structure with anatomical positions and also corresponding differences in nanomechanical properties are reported. These are compared to those observed typically in healthy bone illustrating the unique influence of OI on bone multiscale behavior which results from an evolutionary process lasting for many years.  相似文献

Some viscoplastic characteristics of bovine and human cortical bone   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Multiple cycle tensile creep tests were performed on human and bovine cortical bone specimens. The tests enabled total strain to be decomposed into elastic, linear viscoelastic, creep and permanent plastic components. The results indicate that a stress threshold exists; above which time dependent effects dominate material response and below which the behavior is primarily linear viscoelastic, with time effects playing only a secondary role. A constant stress above the threshold produces a constant steady state creep rate, with the magnitude of the creep rate being an exponential function of the stress magnitude. Additionally, it was found that a major portion of the inelastic strain is always recovered on unloading and that the accumulation of creep strain increases the material compliance on subsequent loadings below the threshold. These two factors suggest that a damage mechanism is responsible for the nonlinear behavior.  相似文献

In summation and averaging of sections of the EEG of sensorimotor cortex of both cerebral hemispheres recorded during human static effort of definite duration, a complex of negative-positive oscillations was observed. These oscillations appear before the beginning of the effort, accompany its execution and finishing and are also recorded after cessation of muscles activity. Before the beginning, the potential of readiness is formed. The execution of the effort is accompanied by a slow negative wave which in some people may be broken by a pronounced positivity. Further a "final" potential appears; its fast positive oscillation is formed before the end of the effort, and a slow negative wave in which it turns, appears only after muscles relaxation.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the dependence of the elastic properties of cortical bone as a transversely isotropic material on its porosity. The longitudinal Young's modulus, transverse Young's modulus, longitudinal shear modulus, transverse shear modulus, and longitudinal Poisson's ratio of cortical bone were determined from eighteen groups of longitudinal and transverse specimens using tensile and torsional tests on a servo-hydraulic material testing system. These cylindrical waisted specimens of cortical bone were harvested from the middle diaphysis of three pairs of human femora. The porosity of these specimens was assessed by means of histology. Our study demonstrated that the longitudinal Young's and shear moduli of human femoral cortical bone were significantly (p<0.01) negatively correlated with the porosity of cortical bone. Conversely, the elastic properties in the transverse direction did not have statistically significant correlations with the porosity of cortical bone. As a result, the transverse elastic properties of cortical bone were less sensitive to changes in porosity than those in the longitudinal direction. Additionally, the anisotropic ratios of cortical bone elasticity were found to be significantly (p<0.01) negatively correlated with its porosity, indicating that cortical bone tended to become more isotropic when its porosity increased. These results may help a number of researchers develop more accurate micromechanics models of cortical bone.  相似文献
