Summary We recently assessed regularity in fluctuation of annual numbers of breeding pairs observed for several raptor species, and found no indication of reputed regular or cyclic fluctuations in our Colville River, Alaska sample for Gyrfalcons (Falco rusticolus) or Rough-legged Hawks (Buteo lagopus) (Mindell et al. 1987). Discussions with colleagues have prompted us to expand our analysis and clarify key points. We present time series analyses, using the Colville River sample size and interval (13 surveys during a 27 year period) for a data set on lynx (Lynx canadensis) (Elton and Nicholson 1942) and for a hypothetical Gyrfalcon population. Indication of regular 10-year fluctuations (P<0.05) in these analyses supports the adequacy of our Colville River sample size and interval in assessing a possible 10-year cycle for Gyrfalcons. We provide dates and methods used for the annual Colville River surveys in discussing applications and limitations of the survey findings. We use the annual Colville River surveys as an index of fluctuation in actual numbers of Gyrfalcons and Rough-legged Hawks present in the study area at the time, based on similarity in timing of surveys between years, use of boat surveys in 12 of 13 years, evidence indicating similarity in sampling error between years, and demonstration of the adequacy of the sample interval. Whether or not numbers of breeding Gyrfalcons and Rough-legged Hawks fluctuate regularly remains an open question. We have provided a first assessment of regularity in fluctuation of observed numbers of breeding pairs, and find regularity for this parameter unsupported considering the Colville River study area as a whole. If other researchersare stirred to test conventional wisdom presuming regularity, our study will have served its purpose.  相似文献

Serological screening and detection of genomic RNA indicates that members of the genus Henipavirus are present not only in Southeast Asia but also in African fruit bats. We demonstrate that the surface glycoproteins F and G of an African henipavirus (M74) induce syncytium formation in a kidney cell line derived from an African fruit bat, Hypsignathus monstrosus. Despite a less broad cell tropism, the M74 glycoproteins show functional similarities to glycoproteins of Nipah virus.  相似文献

Summary The moult and annual cycle of Darwin's finches were studied at Academy Bay, Indefatigable Island, from February 1963 to June 1964. In 1963 the only heavy rainfall of the year fell on 23–24 February, and was immediately followed by nesting. The next breeding season began in December, following moderate rainfall in late November.It was found that in February 1963, before breeding began, a high proportion of the adult finches were undergoing a wing-moult. When breeding began, this moult was arrested, and it was resumed when breeding ended, in April. By August moult had finished. A smaller proportion of the adults began a wing-moult before the next breeding season began, and this moult was again arrested when breeding took place.The moult regime described is very different from that given in the literature for Darwin's finches, which are said to undergo a single post-breeding moult. Some possible reasons are suggested for the discrepancy.The moult of juveniles was followed in detail in 1963, when the young birds were all hatched in March or April. Body-moult took place in May and June, followed in July by moult of the innermost secondaries and the irregular replacement of other flightfeathers. Later, in the last three months of the year, another wing-moult began, after which the young females were indistinguishable from adults and some, at least, of the males were in partly black plumage.
Zusammenfassung Von Februar 1963 bis Juni 1964 wurden im Gebiet der Academy Bay der Indefatigable-Insel Mauser und Jahreszyklus von Darwinfinken studiert. Unmittelbar nach den einzigen ausgiebigen Regenfällen des Jahres 1963 am 23.–24. Februar begannen die Vögel zu nisten. Die nächste Brutperiode begann im Dezember, nachdem Ende November mäßige Regenfälle voraufgegangen waren.Ein großer Teil der adulten Darwinfinken befand sich im Februar 1963, bevor die Brutaktivität begann, in der Schwingenmauser. Mit dem Einsatz der Brutaktivität wurde diese Mauser unterbrochen und nach dem Ende der Fortpflanzungsperiode, im April, wieder fortgeführt. Etwa im August war die Mauser zu Ende. Ein kleinerer Teil der Altvögel begann die Schwingen zu mausern, bevor die nächste Brutperiode begonnen hatte, und auch in diesem Falle wurde die Mauser mit dem Einsetzen der Brutaktivität unterbrochen.Dieses Mauserverhalten unterscheidet sich sehr von den Literaturangaben über die Mauser der Darwinfinken, nach denen diese jährlich nur eine, und zwar eine postnuptiale Mauser durchmachen. Einige mögliche Erklärungen für die unterschiedlichen Angaben werden vorgebracht.Im Jahre 1963, als alle Jungvögel im März oder April schlüpften, wurde die Mauser der Jungvögel genauer untersucht. Das Kleingefieder wurde im Mai und Juni gemausert; im Juli wurden dann die innersten Armschwingen und in unregelmäßiger Folge auch andere Schwingen gemausert. In den letzten drei Monaten des Jahres begann dann eine neue Schwingenmauser, nach der die jungen von den alten nicht mehr zu unterscheiden waren, während wenigstens einige der nun teilweise schwarzes Gefieder besaßen.

Numbers of breeding pairs of African Black Oystercatchers showed a highly significant increase at Cape Agulhas over a 24year study period. Mean numbers of fledglings per pair did not increase correspondingly but showed a cyclic tendency, peaking twice, with a slight overall decline. The increase in the frequency of repeat clutches was close to significant. Nest failures were ascribed largely to human disturbance. Indications of increasing public awareness about the sensitivity of breeding oystercatchers were noted as well as increasing adaptability to human presence among some birds, whereas other birds moved their nests further away from this disturbance. In view of the closure of the Overberg coast to recreational vehicles from 20 February 2002 and the relative importance of the area for the conservation of oystercatchers, this long-term study represents an important baseline against which to measure change.  相似文献

Using a turkey prolactin radioimmunoassay, the serum prolactin levels of male and female ring doves (Streptopelia risoria) during the breeding cycle were measured and their circulating prolactin levels were compared to crop-sac weight on a within-bird basis. During the early phase of the incubation period, crop weight showed a delayed response to prolactin stimulation and there was no correlation; during the midincubation period when prolactin and crop-sac weight were increasing, there was a strong positive correlation; around hatching, when prolactin was at its peak, there was no correlation. There were again strong positive correlations at later samples, when squabs were developing and both prolactin and crop-sac weight were declining. Thus, it appears that the correlation between the circulating prolactin level and crop-sac development depends on the stage of the breeding cycle. While males and females showed similar pattern of circulating prolactin during the period of incubation and parental care, only females consistently showed a postovulatory rise of prolactin. These results were discussed in the context of the role of prolactin in the breeding cycle.  相似文献

Most birds breed in pairs but at least 3% of passerine species are cooperative breeders, whereby more than two adults help to raise the young. The general rarity of cooperative breeding has led to the assumption that cooperative behaviour has evolved from the ancestral trait of pair breeding. However, it has been suggested that pair breeding may be the derived state in some taxa. The primary aim of this research was to test this suggestion using the genus Acanthiza , which contains examples of both cooperatively and pair breeding species. Mitochondrial DNA sequences were used to construct a phylogenetic hypothesis for the tribe containing Acanthiza , the Acanthizini. The breeding behaviour of the species sequenced was determined from records in the literature; where there were no such data the frequency of another social behaviour, flocking, was used as an indicator of breeding behaviour. The mapping of breeding systems onto the phylogeny led to the conclusion that cooperative breeding is the ancestral state in the Acanthizini, with pair breeding evolving twice in the genus Acanthiza . Models explaining the occurrence of cooperative breeding in terms of broad environmental factors or life history do not appear to be applicable to the genus Acanthiza . The pair breeding Acanthiza species cluster into two clades, suggesting some influence of phylogenetic history on the occurrence of the different breeding systems. Combining the results of this study with other data suggests the tendency to breed cooperatively could be ancestral in the superfamily Meliphagoidea.  相似文献

Menstrual cycle characteristics of seasonally breeding rhesus monkeys   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Rhesus monkeys in seminatural environments exhibit a distinct seasonal mating cycle with conceptions restricted to the fall and winter months. In the present study, the characteristics of menstrual cycles were examined during a 1-year period in twelve rhesus monkeys in whom pregnancy was prevented. Menses occurred throughout the year, but ovulations were observed only in the fall and winter months. Menses in the spring and summer months occurred irregularly and were associated exclusively with anovulatory cycles. The total number of ovulations exhibited by these females during the breeding season ranged from two to six and was positively related to body weight, mean luteal phase progesterone (P) levels of normal cycles and social dominance rank. Ovulations with a short luteal phase were exhibited by four females (seven cycles), with the likelihood of occurrence increasing as the breeding season progressed. The incidence of abnormal cycles was predicted from the linear combination of parity, body weight and luteal phase P of normal ovulatory cycles. These results suggest that during the seasonally delimited period of ovulation, females exhibit a range in the quality and quantity of ovulations which may be predicted by certain idiosyncratic physical and behavioral traits.  相似文献

Our analyses of the incidence of cooperative breeding among South African birds differ from previous studies performed elsewhere in two respects. First, we distinguish between obligate (i.e. regular) and facultative (i.e. opportunistic) cooperative breeding species (OCS and FCS). Second, we have restricted our analyses to 217 South African bird species considered to be sufficiently well-studied in terms of their basic biology and life-history characteristics. This was done in order to control for the well-known bias against the often poorly-studied avifaunas of extreme environments such as rainforests and deserts. The results of our analysis do not accord fully with those of Australian birds by Ford et al. (1988). Cooperative breeding in South Africa is associated with seasonal environments, whereas in Australia the opposite is the case. Analyses of ecological factors that promote cooperative breeding among South African birds suggest that the evolutionary pathway to obligate and facultative breeding may be fundamentally different. First, OCS live mainly in savanna habitats that have predictable seasonal peaks in food availability, yet where the baseline level of food availability during the nonbreeding season is sufficient to support permanent residence by groups. Small to medium-sized birds of the African savannas are particularly vulnerable to avian predators, and foraging and roosting in permanent groups may enhance their survival. We propose that the benefits of obligate cooperative breeding are derived chiefly from survival of individuals away from the nest (i.e. during the nonbreeding season). Secondly, FCS live largely in unpredictable, seasonal steppe habitats. Under these conditions it may be impossible for birds to maintain permanent group territories, and variation in the tendency to breed cooperatively may depend largely on the opportunistic assessment of environmental conditions. We therefore suggest that birds (i.e. FCS) will opt to breed cooperatively only when conditions are unfavourable for independent breeding, and that the benefits thus accrued are chiefly related to reproduction.  相似文献

Bats account for ~20% of mammalian species, and are the only mammals with true powered flight. For the sake of their specialized phenotypic traits, many researches have been devoted to examine the evolution of bats. Until now, some whole genome sequences of bats have been assembled and annotated, however, a uniform resource for the annotated bat genomes is still unavailable. To make the extensive data associated with the bat genomes accessible to the general biological communities, we established a Bat Genome Database (BGD). BGD is an open-access, web-available portal that integrates available data of bat genomes and genes. It hosts data from six bat species, including two megabats and four microbats. Users can query the gene annotations using efficient searching engine, and it offers browsable tracks of bat genomes. Furthermore, an easy-to-use phylogenetic analysis tool was also provided to facilitate online phylogeny study of genes. To the best of our knowledge, BGD is the first database of bat genomes. It will extend our understanding of the bat evolution and be advantageous to the bat sequences analysis. BGD is freely available at: http://donglab.ecnu.edu.cn/databases/BatGenome/.  相似文献

Records of ungulate calving peaks, from different latitudes within the African tropics, are reviewed. Converting these peaks to conception dates, and plotting them against latitude, reveals whether the initiation of conception may be connected with a photoperiodic response. The north-south plots of a short-day species should lie in diagonally-opposed quadrants, and those of long-day species in the opposite quadrants. The analysis suggests that a photoperiodic stimulus could be a factor initiating conception in some species, but others lack any apparent relationship.  相似文献

The Cerrado is considered one of the 25 biodiversity hotspots in the world by conservation organizations. There are few studies on bat taxonomic groups for this biome. Herein we present a bat survey employing mist nets in the protected area of a private natural heritage reserve Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural Pousada das Araras, located in the west-central Brazil. We investigate the hypothesis that the Cerrado habitat complexity plays a role on the different structuring forces in bat ecological communities. Bats represent a diversity of trophic levels, and they occupy a wide range of available Cerrado habitats and microhabitats. The patterns and processes we discuss represent the factors influencing coexisting species of bats in different habitats and their implications for conservation. We captured 758 individuals of 25 species belonging to four families. Phyllostomidae was the dominant family, represented by 20 species (80%). The average recapture rate was 6.2%, and the species with most proportional recapture was A. caudifer. Greater species richness was observed among bats with predominantly insectivore habits, followed by frugivores. Glossophaga soricina was a dominant species, with about 30% of the captures. There was seasonal variation relating to the number of bats captured, with greater bat frequency occurring during the wet season, although some species occurred at higher rates during the dry season, such as C. perspicillata and S. lilium. Sanguivore bats were abundant, reflecting the availability of shelters and food supply (livestock) in the surrounding area. Compared to other surveyed areas, Pousada das Araras may be considered of high species diversity, supplanting the majority of known Cerrado studied areas. Apparently Cerrado favours the occurrence of insectivore species, with emphasis on the foliage-gleaning insectivores belong to the subfamily Phyllostominae. This study indicates that apparently the conservation of the Cerrado savanna fragments can support a considerable diversity of bat species.  相似文献

Two new B-type cyclin genes from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, called CLB5 and CLB6, are located in a tail to tail arrangement adjacent to the G2/M phase promoting cyclins CLB2 and CLB1, respectively. These genomic cyclin arrays are flanked by tRNAs and repeated sequences of Ty elements suggesting an intrachromosomal gene duplication followed by an interchromosomal gene duplication. Based on their deduced protein sequence the CLB5 and CLB6 genes form a new pair of B-type cyclins. They are most related to each other and then to the deduced protein sequence of their adjacent genes CLB1 and CLB2. Both genes are periodically expressed, peaking early in the cell cycle. Loss of function mutants are viable, but clb5- mutants exhibit a delay in S phase whereas clb6- mutants show a delay in late G1 and/or S phase. The clb5 mutant phenotype is somewhat more pronounced in a double null mutant. Both cyclins have the potential to interact with the p34CDC28 kinase in vivo.  相似文献
