Young salmonids may use substratum as hiding stations and/or shelter and they depend on invertebrates, which develop on substratum, for their feeding. For several decades, human activities have contributed to increase siltation in streams, and negative consequences on trout production have sometimes been highlighted. In the research devoted to the understanding of that negative effect, most studies have focused on embryo‐larval survival, and consequences of substrate embeddedness on later stages have rarely been investigated. In the present work we attempt at studying the impact of embeddedness on brown trout juveniles. In an experimental channel, trout growth was compared in embedded and non‐embedded sections. Growth was reduced with embeddedness due to change in trophic conditions and/or in habitat. To investigate the direct role of substratum for fish, trouts behaviour was observed from an under water observation room in two cages offering embedded and non‐embedded substrate conditions but similar trophic conditions. Competition appeared heavier in the embedded cage where dominated fishes stayed almost motionless. The effect of substratum quality on intra‐specific competition is discussed in relation with visual isolation and territory size.  相似文献

The self‐feeding rhythms of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and white‐spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis were studied when group‐held fishes ( n  = 10 per group) were fed using self‐feeders under two different light intensities (50 lx, 16 μW cm−2 and 700 lx, 215 μW cm−2) during the light phase of the light‐dark cycle. Food wastage was also measured. At 50 lx, all groups of rainbow trout learned to operate the self‐feeder within 4 days, whereas it took up to 25 days for all groups at 700 lx. In contrast, all groups of white‐spotted charr learned self‐feeding within 17 days, irrespective of light intensity. These results, although non‐significant, suggest that lower light intensities can stimulate instrumental learning in rainbow trout, but not white‐spotted charr. In rainbow trout, the total number of trigger actuations for the entire experimental period was significantly higher at 50 rather than 700 lx, although this may have been related to delayed learning at 700 lx. There was no significant effect in white‐spotted charr. Growth rate (assessed using the thermal growth coefficient) was also higher in rainbow trout but not white‐spotted charr at 50 rather than 700 lx, although this difference was non‐significant. Light intensity had no significant effect on food wastage in either rainbow trout or white‐spotted charr, and it did not appear to affect the proportion of trigger actuations during the light phase. Clear diurnal feeding rhythms were observed in both species and these were classified into four categories: uniform, dawn, dusk and crepuscular. At 50 lx, fish from both species generally fed in temporally localized periods at either dawn and dusk, whilst feeding was predominantly uniform during the light phase at 700 lx.  相似文献

Primary nutrients and the biotic integrity of rivers and streams   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12  
1. Controls to reduce loadings of primary nutrients to maintain biotic integrity in rivers and streams have not been widely implemented because the relation between nutrients and chlorophyll, and its consequences for higher trophic levels, is confounded in lotic ecosystems by their openness, the variable degree of nutrient limitation and by the effect of physical factors.
2. The relationship between primary nutrients and biotic integrity in rivers and streams was tested using biological, physical and chemical information collected since 1982 from similar locations in streams throughout Ohio using standard procedures.
3. There was a negative correlation between nutrients, especially total phosphorus, and biotic integrity. The deleterious effect of increasing nutrient concentration on fish communities in low order streams was detectable when nutrient concentrations exceeded background conditions (total inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus > 0.61 mg L–1 and 0.06 mg L–1, respectively).
4. These results suggest that the control of release of toxins and oxygen‐demanding wastes to rivers is insufficient to protect aquatic life, and confirm the importance of non‐point sources of pollution in catchment planning as well as the combined effect of habitat and riparian quality on nutrient assimilation.  相似文献

The hypothesis that phosphorylation of the minor photosystem II antenna complex CP29 (CP34 formation) in Zea mays (cv. Dekalb DK300), under conditions of illumination and low temperature stress, may constitute a protective mechanism against photoinhibition, has been investigated. It is demonstrated that illumination at low temperature induces a marked increase in reversible non‐photochemical quenching yield of chlorophyll fluorescence, together with CP34 formation. These two parameters, however, are not related as CP34 dephosphorylates to CP29 in the dark, with a half‐time of about 10 min, while the enhanced non‐photochemical quenching yield is stable for many hours. The enhanced non‐photochemical quenching yield seems to correlate with zeaxanthin formation. The influence of CP34 formation on photoinhibition was also directly investigated. No measurable effect on this parameter could be observed after treatment with high light. It is concluded that CP34 is probably not directly involved in photoprotective processes.  相似文献

The lifetime success and performance characteristics of communally reared offspring of wild native Burrishoole (native), ranched native (ranched) and non‐native (non‐native) Atlantic salmon Salmo salar from the adjacent Owenmore River were compared. Non‐native 0+ year parr showed a substantial downstream migration, which was not shown by native and ranched parr. This appears to have been an active migration rather than competitive displacement and may reflect an adaptation to environmental or physiographic conditions within the Owenmore River catchment where the main nursery habitat is downstream of the spawning area. There were no differences between native and ranched in smolt output or adult return. Both of these measures, however, were significantly lower for the non‐native group. A greater proportion of the non‐native Atlantic salmon was taken in the coastal drift nets compared to the return to the Burrishoole system, probably as a result of the greater size of the non‐native fish. The overall lifetime success of the non‐native group, from fertilized egg to returning adult, was some 35% of native and ranched. The ranched group showed a significantly greater male parr maturity, a greater proportion of 1+ year smolts, and differences in sex ratio and timing of freshwater entry of returning adults compared to native, which may have fitness implications under specific conditions.  相似文献

Specific receptor and fibre types of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss involved in the detection and discrimination of amino acids and a heterogeneous collection of compounds were investigated by recording the electrical activity of the maxillary branch of the facial nerve innervating taste buds inside the upper jaw. Proline (Pro), alanine (Ala), leucine (Leu), betaine (Bet) and 2‐amino‐3‐guanidinopropionic acid (Agp) were the major amino acids detected by the gustatory system. The two experimental approaches, concentration‐response curves and cross‐adaptations, showed that all amino acids were detected by three independent receptor types: Pro ‐, Agp/Bet ‐ and Leu ‐receptors. Bile acids, the most potent stimulants recorded, were detected by a single receptor type independent of those for amino acids, with threshold concentrations of 10−12 M. Strychnine, quinine and tetrodotoxin may have partially shared a single receptor mechanism. The gustatory sensibility narrowly tuned towards the amino acid spectrum compared to those for a diverse array of non‐feeding stimulant chemicals, combined with feeding behaviour triggered primarily by vision and olfaction, suggest that in rainbow trout, and possibly other salmonid species, gustatory chemical cues, in addition to food finding and intake, play an important role in detecting poisonous prey and substances.  相似文献

Population densities of landlocked lake‐migratory brown trout Salmo trutta were estimated in two distinct lotic sections, separated by a lentic segment, in the Greåna River, Sweden, and individual growth and habitat use were monitored for 835 tagged brown trout from September 1998 to June 2000. Residency dominated in the upstream section where density of 0+ and 1+ year brown trout was low and growth rate high. In contrast, >90% of the brown trout that migrated to the lake originated from the downstream section, where density was high and growth rate low. For ≥2+ year individuals, growth rate was similar between the two stream sections, but densities were higher in the upstream than in the downstream section. Lake‐migrants had higher growth rates than non‐migrants (residents) during the autumn of both years. From September to May, migrants increased their body mass by >35%, whereas non‐migrants increased by <5%. Approximately 70% of the brown trout moved <10 m and <2% moved between the two stream sections, indicating that the lentic habitat might function as a barrier for juveniles. Differences in migratory behaviour, density and growth between the upstream and the downstream section might indicate that environmental factors influence the decision to migrate. It cannot be excluded, however, that the observed differences are genetically programmed, selected by migration costs that favour migratory behaviour downstream and residency upstream.  相似文献

Brown trout Salmo trutta redds in the Credit River, Ontario, were enumerated and assessed for physical, location and cover feature characteristics during the 2002 spawning season. Hydraulic habitats were classified on the basis of channel morphology and availability recorded. Combined use and availability data were used to assess habitat selection preferences and test for significant differences. Significant preferences for upstream pool and riffle habitat were found, but all available habitat types were used to some degree. Non‐preferred habitat redds were significantly larger than those located in preferred habitats and more likely to be found in association with woody debris cover. Larger redds were interpreted as indicative of larger fish. The use of non‐preferred downstream habitats by larger fish was further interpreted in the context of overwinter habitat requirements to reflect possible trade‐offs between reproductive and adult over‐winter survival requirements resulting in the selection of habitat for multiple life‐history functions. Results suggest that redd density alone should not be used to infer critical autumn habitat requirements for brown trout.  相似文献

1. Increased primary production in Flathead Lake during the 1980s has been variously attributed to increased nutrient loadings and/or decreases in zooplankton abundance resulting from the introduction of Mysis relicta . In order to assess the importance of these two factors in regulating the phytoplankton community in Flathead Lake, we manipulated zooplankton abundance and nutrient availability in a series of 5‐day enclosure experiments.
 2. Chlorophyll a levels were stimulated by simultaneous addition of nitrogen and phosphorus. At ambient nutrient levels, alteration of zooplankton density had no effect on chlorophyll a levels. Top‐down control through zooplankton grazing could only be demonstrated in treatments supplemented with nutrients. Under these conditions, there was a significant negative correlation between zooplankton abundance and final chlorophyll a levels.
 3. These results suggest that the phytoplankton community in Flathead Lake is regulated primarily by bottom‐up controls. Consequently, future management activities aimed at preventing further increases in algal growth in the lake should focus on nutrient abatement. Alteration of the upper trophic levels does not appear to have significantly affected phytoplankton abundance in the lake. Should nutrient levels increase in the future, then top‐down controls may become more important.

In alstroemeria ( Alstroemeria hybrida ), leaf senescence is effectively retarded by the application of gibberellins and by low fluences of red light. In this study we examined the possible interaction of gibberellins and red light in the regulation of senescence. Determination of endogenous gibberellins revealed that leaf senescence is accompanied by significant changes in the concentrations of non‐ 13‐hydroxylated gibberellins, the onset of senescence coinciding with a dramatic drop in GA4, whereas concentrations of 13‐hydroxylated gibberellins are far less influenced. However, no direct effect of red light on a specific GA‐metabolic step could be determined. When exogenously applied, non‐13‐hydroxylated GAs were more active than the 13‐hydroxylated GAs. It appeared that the effect of red light is additive to that of active GAs. We hypothesise that GA4 and phytochrome control senescence in alstroemeria mainly through separate mechanisms and have independent effects and that the observed differences in gibberellin concentrations are a consequence of delayed leaf senescence rather than a cause for it.  相似文献

Hatchery cutthroat trout Oncorhynchus clarki clarki were used to examine the effects of 48 h and 3 week temperature acclimation periods on critical swimming speed ( U crit). The U crit was determined for fish at acclimation temperatures of 7, 14 and 18° C using two consecutive ramp‐ U crit tests in mobile Brett‐type swim tunnels. An additional group was tested at the stock's ambient rearing temperature of 10° C. The length of the temperature acclimation period had no significant effect on either the first or the second U crit( U crit‐1 and U crit‐2, respectively) or on the recovery ratio (the quotient of U crit‐2  U crit‐1−1). As anticipated, there was a significant positive relationship between U crit‐1 and temperature ( P  < 0·01) for both acclimation periods, and an increasing, though non‐significant, trend between U crit‐2 and temperature ( P  = 0·10). Acclimation temperature had no significant effect ( P  = 0·71) on the recovery ratio. These results indicate that a 48 h acclimation to experimental temperatures within the range of −3 to +8° C of the acclimation temperature may be sufficient in studies of swimming performance with this species. This ability to acclimate rapidly is probably adaptive for cutthroat trout and other species that occupy thermally variable environments.  相似文献

The effect of six different feeding times was tested on feed intake, growth performance, proximate body composition and nutrient retention in the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss . Using a non‐linear regression model, a significant rhythmic pattern over a 24 h period was observed for feed gain ratio and nutrient retention responses to feeding time. Specific growth rate and protein growth rate responses were also rhythmic but the trends were not significant. There was no clear effect of feeding time on feed intake and proximate body composition. The study suggested that feed intake, at least under the experimental conditions encountered, was synchronized to feeding time while some physiological rhythms involved in nutrient metabolism were probably synchronized to photoperiod.  相似文献

In February to March, wild brown trout Salmo trutta were captured by electrofishing in a natural watercourse (tributaries of the River Lille Aa, Denmark), individually tagged (Passive Integrated Transponders), and released. Representatives of the tagged brown trout were recaptured on the release sites in April by electrofishing and eventually caught in downstream smolt traps ('migrants') placed in the main river or by electrofishing ('residents') on the initial sites in June. Upon each capture, smolt appearance and body size were evaluated, and a non‐lethal gill biopsy was taken and used for Na+,K+‐ATPase analysis. Based on repetitive gill enzyme analysis in individual fish, a retrospective analysis of the rate of development in individual brown trout ultimately classified as migrants or residents was performed. Two months prior to migration, a bimodal morphological and physiological (gill Na+,K+‐ATPase) development concurred and was related to the subsequent differentiation into resident and migratory fractions of each population. This differentiation was unrelated to growth rate and body size of individual fish but skewed in favour of migratory females. Individuals destined to become migrants developed a smolt‐like appearance before the onset of migration and had higher rate of change of gill Na+,K+‐ATPase activity than fish remaining residents. The rate of change of gill Na+,K+‐ATPase activity was independent of the distance migrated to the trap (3–28 km). Thus in bimodal wild brown trout populations a major increase in enzyme activity takes place before migration is initiated and is a characteristic of migratory individuals only.  相似文献

Glutamine synthetase (GS, EC 6.3.1.2), a key enzyme in nitrogen assimilation, was investigated in tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Hellfrucht Frühstamm) leaves infected with Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst) or treated with the herbicide phosphinothricin (PPT), an irreversible inhibitor of GS. GS activity decreased markedly when Pst infection occurred in illuminated leaves, but only a slight decrease in relation to control leaves was observed under non‐photosynthetic conditions. In leaves treated with PPT, a rapid inhibition of GS activity was observed under all experimental conditions. When bacterial infection or herbicide treatment was carried out in the light, cytosolic GS (GS1) appeared as the predominant GS polypeptide; however, under non‐photosynthetic conditions GS2 remained the most abundant molecular GS species as occurs in non‐stressed plants. These results suggest a close correlation between the photosynthetic process and changes in the relative proportions of GS polypeptides during infection or herbicide treatment. Ammonium has been described as an inducer of GS genes, but as ammonium accumulated during all treatments, other light‐dependent factors could be involved in GS regulation of stressed leaves.  相似文献

Split‐root experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that adjustments in lateral root initiation, as might occur in response to localized soil conditions, are determined by the sugar content of the root and do not depend on changes in the import of phloem‐translocated phytohormones. Wheat ( Triticum aesticum L. cv. Alexandria) seedlings were grown in hydroponics with their seminal roots divided between two compartments within the culture vessel. Two seminal roots of treated plants were supplied with standard nutrient solution supplemented with 50 m M glucose, whilst the remaining three roots received nutrient solution without glucose. Control plants had their roots divided in the same ratio, but both 'halves' received nutrient solution without glucose. Feeding glucose to one 'half' of the root system increased the frequency (number per unit length) of lateral root primordia in the fed axes. The increase was first observed 15 h after the start of treatment and was located within the apical 30 mm of root. At this time there was no significant treatment effect on the frequency of primordia in non‐fed axes. The enhanced initiation of lateral roots in glucose‐fed root tips was associated with an increase in their concentration of glucose and sucrose plus low molecular mass fructans. In contrast, there was a reduction in partitioning of 14C‐photosynthate to these root tips compared to the non‐fed roots of treated plants and controls. The results indicate that lateral root initiation can be stimulated by sugars in the absence of an increase in phloem translocation. It is proposed that proliferation of lateral roots in response to localized soil conditions, such as nutrient patches, may be signalled by an increase in sugar content of the tissue, rather than an altered flux of phytohormones or other material co‐transported with sucrose in the phloem.  相似文献

The molecular mobility of the non‐cellulosic polysaccharides in hydrated primary cell walls of three monocotyledons (Italian ryegrass, pineapple and onion) and one dicotyledon (cabbage) was studied using solid‐state 13C NMR spectroscopy. These cell walls were chosen as they have different non‐cellulosic polysaccharide compositions. By exploiting proton rotating‐frame and spin‐spin relaxation time constants three different cell wall domains which responded to cross‐polarization experiments were identified. Most of the non‐cellulosic polysaccharides occupied a mobile domain (C), but some occupied a partly rigid domain (B). Crystalline cellulose occupied a highly rigid domain (A). In the cell walls of Italian ryegrass and pineapple, domain C contained mainly glucuronoarabinoxylans and small amounts of rhamnogalacturonans; domain B contained small amounts of xyloglucans and galacturonans. However, in the cell walls of onion and cabbage, domain C contained mainly rhamnogalacturonans with galactans (in onion) or arabinans (in cabbage) as side chains; domain B contained galacturonans and xyloglucans. Single‐pulse excitation was used on Italian ryegrass and cabbage cell walls to reveal signals from a highly mobile fourth domain (D). In Italian ryegrass cell walls domain D contained glucuronoarabinoxylans and small amounts of rhamnogalacturonan, whereas in cabbage cell walls it contained arabinan side chains of rhamnogalacturonans. A novel feature of the research was the use of solid‐state 13C NMR spectroscopy to examine the molecular mobilities of the polysaccharides in monocotyledon cell walls that contain glucuronoarabinoxylans.  相似文献

An electrofishing survey of daytime shelter microhabitat use of bullhead Cottus gobio in a southern English chalk stream revealed positive selection for moderate water velocity, vegetation cover and coarse substrata. Water depth, other forms of cover, shade and substratum embeddedness had no significant influence on the distribution of fish. Microhabitat use was size‐dependent, with patches occupied by adult fish containing coarser substrata and less blanket weed ( Cladophora algae) than those occupied by smaller juvenile conspecifics. Differences in substratum use between size‐classes were less pronounced in parts of the stream shaded by the tree canopy. In laboratory tanks stocked at low fish density, both juveniles and adults favoured use of cobbles over pebbles. The response of fish to increased conspecific density was size‐dependent; juveniles reduced use of the coarse substratum whereas adults maintained their predominance in this habitat. An apparently greater shift by juveniles when in the presence of adults was significant at α = 0·10 only, as was an apparent reduction in interactions between size‐classes under low light intensity. The displacement of small juvenile fish from the preferred cobble substratum is consistent with the hypothesis that intraspecific competition contributes to the size‐related microhabitat shift observed in the field. Although there was a tendency for the strength of competition to be reduced at low light levels, the mechanism by which tree canopy cover affects microhabitat use remains uncertain.  相似文献

Abstract.Males and females of the Japanese calopterygid damselfly, Matrona basilaris japonica Fester, showed a rapid (within 24 h), and significant reduction in immune system function (encapsulation response) after reproductive activity (copulation or oviposition).
 A similar, but non‐significant, change occurred in males that conducted energetically costly behaviour (fighting).
 These data suggest that there may be physiological costs other than energy‐based trade‐offs associated with copulation and oviposition that may have life‐history consequences via their effects on immune system function.  相似文献

Behavioural and electrophysiological responses of reproductive and non‐reproductive female round gobies Neogobius melanostomus to water previously occupied by male round gobies (reproductive male water) were compared. Reproductive females spent more time than non‐reproductive females in a tank near the input of water conditioned from reproductive males. Also, reproductive females swam significantly faster than non‐reproductive females, suggesting that reproductive male odour may have activated spawning behaviour. Olfactory epithelial field potential measurement (electro‐olfactogram, EOG) showed that reproductive male water was a potent olfactory stimulus to reproductive females, but not to non‐reproductive females. Reproductive females responded significantly more than non‐reproductive females to solid‐phase (octadecylsilane) extracts of reproductive male water. Also, when these extracts were separated on reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), reproductive females showed noticeably greater responses than non‐reproductive females to the fractions that eluted between 30 and 40 min. The behavioural data support the hypothesis that reproductive male round gobies release compounds into the water that attract potential mates. The EOG data indicate that these compounds can be quantitatively extracted from the water and be partially purified by HPLC. The evidence is not sufficient to indicate whether or not the compounds are steroids. The relatively early elution time on HPLC, however, suggests that if these compounds are steroids, then it is more likely that they will be conjugated rather than free steroids.  相似文献

Abstract  1. Chrysoperla carnea is an important predatory insect in maize. To assess the ecological effects of Bt-maize, expressing the Cry1Ab protein, on larvae of this predator, the following factors were examined: (1) the performance of three prey herbivores ( Rhopalosiphum padi , Tetranychus urticae , and Spodoptera littoralis ) on transgenic Bt and non‐transgenic maize plants; (2) the intake of the Cry1Ab toxin by the three herbivores; and (3) the effects on C. carnea when fed each of the prey species.
2. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) was used as a measure of performance for R. padi and T. urticae . No difference in this parameter was observed between herbivores reared on Bt or non‐transgenic plants. In contrast, a higher mortality rate and a delay in development were observed in S. littoralis larvae when fed Bt-maize compared with those fed the control maize plants.
3. The ingestion of Cry1Ab toxin by the different herbivores was measured using an immunological assay (ELISA). Highest amounts of Cry1Ab toxin were detected in T. urticae , followed by S. littoralis , and only trace amounts detected in R. padi .
4. Feeding C. carnea with T. urticae , which were shown to contain the Cry1Ab toxin, or with R. padi , which do not ingest the toxin, did not affect survival, development, or weight of C. carnea . In contrast, a significant increase in mortality and a delay in development were observed when predators were fed S. littoralis larvae reared on Bt-maize.
5. A combined interaction of poor prey quality and Cry1Ab toxin may account for the negative effects observed on C. carnea when fed S. littoralis . The relevance of these findings to the ecological risks of Bt-maize on C. carnea is discussed.  相似文献
