<正>"Why do arginine and pyrimidines have to be considered together?"This was the question I asked when I was invited by Barbara Zimmermann to attend the 23rd International Conference on Arginine and Pyrimidines(ICAP)three years ago.The meeting was held in the summer of 2012 at Bogota,Columbia,known as the"the Athens of South America".I am not alone in wanting to know more about the relationship between arginine and pyrimidines.Last summer,when I was organising the next ICAP meeting at Oxford(Aughey et al.,2014),one of my colleagues asked me,"Why such a weird name for a conference?"I am not sure if I had given her a satisfying answer and I was enthused to find out what the reasons may be.

THE THREE G's Meeting the Invertebrate Cell Culture Pioneers: Goldschmidt, Gaw, and Grace

It was my good fortune to meet personally the three invertebrate cell culture pioneers,Richard Goldschmidt,Zan-Yin Gaw,and Thomas D.C.Grace (Fig.1).In 1951 I met Goldschmidt at a symposium in Cold Spring Harbor,but I only knew that he was a prominent geneticist.I had no idea about his insect cell culture work at Yale University and daily contacts with Ross G.Harrison.In 1959 Zan Yin Gaw in Wuhan successfully cultured monolayers of silkworm cells for more than one year.I reported his breakthrough achievement at the 11th International Congress of Entomology in Vienna in 1960,but his work was completely ignored outside China.In 1982 Gaw invited me to Wuhan where he told me that he studied in the United States in the 1930s,working as postdoctoral scientist at the Rockefeller Institute,where he was daily meeting William Trager,and later at Yale University in the Osborn Laboratory,where he was inspired by Harrison.T.D.C.Grace worked in my laboratory at Rockefeller University during 1957 and 1958,then returned to CSIRO in Canberra,Australia.

Effects of environmental stressors on stem cells

Environmental toxicants are ubiquitous,and many are known to cause harmful health effects.However,much of what we know or think we know concerning the targets and long-term effects of exposure to environmental stressors is sadly lacking.Toxicant exposure may have health effects that are currently mischaracterized or at least mechanistically incompletely understood.While much of the recent excitement about stem cells(SCs)focuses on their potential as therapeutic agents,they also offer a valuable resource to give us insight into the mechanisms and risks of toxicant effects.Not only as a response to the increasing ethical pressure to reduce animal testing,SC studies allow us valuable insight into the true effects of human exposure to environmental stressors under controlled conditions.We present a review of the history of publications on the effects of environmental stressors on SCs,followed by a consolidation of the literature over the past five years on a subset of key environmental stressors of importance to human health and their effects on both embryonic and tissue SCs.The review will make constructive suggestions as to areas of toxicant research where further studies are needed,as well as making indications of the potential utility for advancing knowledge and directing research on environmental toxicology.

Profile of Dr.Xu Zhang

正Dr.Xu Zhang was conferred the Bachelor's degree of Medicine from Fourth Military Medical University in 1985.From 1990 to 1994,he carried out his Ph.D.study at the Department of Neuroscience,Karolinska Institute in Sweden.Then,he was appointed as lecturer,associate professor and professor successively at the Institute of Neuroscience,Fourth Military Medical University.In 1999,he was recruited as a principal investigator by the Institute of Neuroscience,Chinese Academy of Science.He received the outstanding young investigator award of National Natural Science Foundation of China in 1995.He was elected as Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015.     

A NEW SPECIES OF LITHODIDAE (CRUSTACEA, ANOMURA) FROM EAST CHINA SEA

In this paper, a new species of Lithodidae is reported. The type specimens are deposited in the Department of Biology, Hangzhou University and the Donghai Fisheries Research Institute. Diagnosis of the new species is given as below.

Three ganera and five species of Urostylidae are reported from China inthe present paper, three species belonging to the genus Urolabida, one toUrochela and one to Urochellus. Among them, a species is recorded for thefirst time from this country, while all the ramaining are described as new toscience. The type species are separately deposited in the Institute of Zoology,Academia Sinica and the Department of Biology, Nankai University. All themeasurements are in millimeters.

Collections-based systematics in the new age of discovery: Celebrating the legacy and life of Professor Wen-Tsai Wang

Professor Wen-Tsai Wang (王文采, June 5, 1926–November 16, 2022) was an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and a legendary plant taxonomist at the Institute of Botany of CAS (Fig.1). Herein, we organize a virtual special issue in Journal of Systematics and Evolution (JSE) to celebrate the legacy and life of Professor Wang, who was a leading plant taxonomist in China and made important contributions toward advancing the understanding of the flora of China, the biogeography of eastern Asia, and biodiversity research in the vast Hengduan Mountains. He served as the Editor-in-Chief of Acta Phytotaxonomica Sinica (now JSE) for 6 years from 1982 to 1988, and trained several generations of plant taxonomists in China (Li,2001).
