I investigated canine dimorphism and interspecific canine form in adult specimens from 4 capuchin species (Cebus albifrons, C. apella, C. capucinus, and C. olivaceus). I used various univariate and multivariate statistics, which are based on 6 variables, to test several hypotheses that are based upon the finding that canine dimorphism is strongly associated with intermale competition in platyrrhines (Kay et al., 1988), Greenfield (1992a), Plavcan and van Schaik (1992, 1994). Results from the indices of canine dimorphism and the unpaired t-tests corroborate the prediction that males of each species possess significantly larger canines than those of females. Large male canines are especially prominent in 2 variables, maxillary and mandibular canine height. Greene's t-test (1989) does not support the prediction that Cebus apella and C. olivaceus possess a larger degree of canine dimorphism relative to C. albifrons and C. capucinus. No interspecific differences in degree of canine dimorphism are indicated by this test. Results of the discriminant function analyses (DFA) do not find that Cebus apella and C. olivaceus possess different canine form relative to C. albifrons and C. capucinus as predicted. However, Cebus apella is differentiated from the untufted capuchins (C. albifrons, C. capucinus, and C. olivaceus) by the DFA. I suggest that intermale competition is the primary selective force underlying the observed morphological patterns; however, it does not explain all the variation associated with canine dimorphism in Cebus.  相似文献

The effects of an intravenous methacholine infusion on cardiovascular-pulmonary function were measured in seven mongrel dogs (22.0 +/- 2.8 kg), anesthetized with chloralose and urethan and beta-adrenergically blocked with propranolol. In a volume-displacement plethysmograph, physiological measurements were made at base line and 25 min after establishing a methacholine infusion (0.1-1.0 mg X kg-1 X h-1). Methacholine significantly (P less than 0.05) increased airways resistance (1.9 +/- 0.8 to 8.2 +/- 2.9 cmH2O X l-1 X s), decreased static lung compliance (84.7 +/- 18.5 to 48.2 +/- 9.4 ml/cmH2O), depressed arterial PO2 (81 +/- 17 to 56 +/- 10 Torr), and lowered blood pressure (132 +/- 10 to 69 +/- 18 Torr) and cardiac output (5.7 +/- 1.9 to 4.1 +/- 1.2 l/min). These effects persisted during a further 80 min of methacholine infusion conducted in five of the animals. During the initial 25-min period of methacholine, the end-expired volume (volume-displacement Krogh spirometer) rose in all animals, indicating an increase in functional residual capacity from 997 +/- 115 to 1,623 +/- 259 ml (P less than 0.0005). Analysis of pulmonary pressure-volume curves revealed no change in total lung capacity but an increase in residual volume from 489 +/- 168 to 1,106 +/- 216 ml (P less than 0.001). Thus methacholine caused 617 ml of gas trapping, which was not detected by the Boyle's law principle, presumably because gas was trapped at high transpulmonary pressure. We suggest that intravenous methacholine-induced canine bronchoconstriction, which causes gas trapping and hypoxia, may be a useful animal model of clinical status asthmaticus.  相似文献

Anthropoid primates are well known for their highly sexually dimorphic canine teeth, with males possessing canines that are up to 400% taller than those of females. Primate canine dimorphism has been extensively documented, with a consensus that large male primate canines serve as weapons for intrasexual competition, and some evidence that large female canines in some species may likewise function as weapons. However, apart from speculation that very tall male canines may be relatively weak and that seed predators have strong canines, the functional significance of primate canine shape has not been explored. Because carnivore canine shape and size are associated with killing style, this group provides a useful comparative baseline for primates. We evaluate primate maxillary canine tooth size, shape and relative bending strength against body size, skull size, and behavioral and demographic measures of male competition and sexual selection, and compare them to those of carnivores. We demonstrate that, relative to skull length and body mass, primate male canines are on average as large as or larger than those of similar sized carnivores. The range of primate female canine sizes embraces that of carnivores. Male and female primate canines are generally as strong as or stronger than those of carnivores. Although we find that seed-eating primates have relatively strong canines, we find no clear relationship between male primate canine strength and demographic or behavioral estimates of male competition or sexual selection, in spite of a strong relationship between these measures and canine crown height. This suggests either that most primate canines are selected to be very strong regardless of variation in behavior, or that primate canine shape is inherently strong enough to accommodate changes in crown height without compromising canine function.  相似文献

The use of a Spinco L-4 zonal centrifuge with the B-XVI continuous-flow rotor for the purification of canine distemper and infectious canine hepatitis viruses is described. Up to 68 liters of virus was processed at one time. Infectious canine hepatitis virus was found to band at 39% sucrose and canine distemper virus banded between 32 and 48% sucrose. The virus was concentrated 10-fold, and the purity of the virus, as measured by protein concentration, was increased by 99%.  相似文献

犬瘟热是一种犬瘟热病毒引起的多种动物共患传染病,在世界范围内的家犬和野生动物中多次爆发。犬瘟热的跨种间传播对多种野生动物如东北虎、非洲狮、雪豹、大熊猫等野生动物的种群安全造成严重威胁,并且感染的宿主范围仍在扩大。近年来的研究表明,犬瘟热病毒的不断变异和野生动物栖息地内流浪犬只的增多使我国野生动物尤其是野外种群正在面临犬瘟热的严重威胁。为了更好地应对犬瘟热对野生动物的危害,本文综述了犬瘟热的病原特征和在野生动物中的流行病学、致病机制、诊断与治疗以及疫苗免疫方面的研究进展,在此基础上提出了针对传染源、传播途径、易感动物三方面的控制措施来减少野生动物犬瘟热的传播风险。目前,由于国内自然保护区科研技术力量欠缺以及防控意识薄弱,对于野生动物犬瘟热的监测处于空白状态,这无疑加大了野生动物犬瘟热的防控难度。因此,为了保障我国野生动物种群安全,我们需要加强在野生动物犬瘟热监测与流行病学方面的研究工作,建立有效的监测防控体系将犬瘟热阻挡在野生动物种群之外。  相似文献

Sexual size dimorphism is generally associated with sexual selection via agonistic male competition in nonhuman primates. These primate models play an important role in understanding the origins and evolution of human behavior. Human size dimorphism is often hypothesized to be associated with high rates of male violence and polygyny. This raises the question of whether human dimorphism and patterns of male violence are inherited from a common ancestor with chimpanzees or are uniquely derived. Here I review patterns of, and causal models for, dimorphism in humans and other primates. While dimorphism in primates is associated with agonistic male mate competition, a variety of factors can affect male and female size, and thereby dimorphism. The causes of human sexual size dimorphism are uncertain, and could involve several non-mutually-exclusive mechanisms, such as mate competition, resource competition, intergroup violence, and female choice. A phylogenetic reconstruction of the evolution of dimorphism, including fossil hominins, indicates that the modern human condition is derived. This suggests that at least some behavioral similarities with Pan associated with dimorphism may have arisen independently, and not directly from a common ancestor.  相似文献

Canine pyometra

Pyometra, literally meaning pus in the uterus, is a common disease entity of intact bitches. Similar conditions occur, including hydrometra and mucometra [De Bosschere H, Ducatelle R, Vermeirsch H, Van Den Broeck W, Coryn M. Cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra complex in the bitch: should the two entities be disconnected? Theriogenology 2001;55:1509-19]. The exact etiology is unknown; however the repeated and prolonged response to estrogen followed by long intervals of progesterone dominance in the intact bitch leads to hormonally mediated changes in the endometrium. The endometrium changes when impacted by bacterial infiltration; changes in endometrial steroid receptors can result in the clinical syndrome described as pyometra. This paper will describe the signalment, risk factors, prevalence, proposed etiologic events, and both medical and surgical therapies. In addition, the prognosis for successful outcome and effects on future reproduction will also be described.  相似文献

目的探索和建立适用于犬皮肤成纤维细胞的体外分离、培养及鉴定的技术方法。方法采用组织贴块培养法和胰蛋白酶、胶原酶Ⅰ联合消化法对犬皮肤成纤维细胞进行体外培养、传代。并对所培养的细胞进行倒置显微镜观察和苏木素-伊红染色,观察成纤维细胞形态,并对培养细胞行波形蛋白免疫荧光染色。结果倒置相差显微镜下可见长梭形细胞生长,苏木素-伊红染色可见细胞呈漩涡状、平行排列,第5代细胞免疫荧光检测波形蛋白(vimentin)表达阳性。结论建立了高效快速分离和稳定培养成纤维细胞的方法,为诱导犬心房纤维化提供了充足的种子细胞。  相似文献
