Alchichica is a warm-monomictic, oligotrophic lake whose phytoplanktonic biomass is dominated by large size (average ca. 55 μm) diatoms. The fast sinking phytoplankton leads to silica, and other nutrient exportation out of the productive zone of the lake. The aim of the present study was to identify and measure the sedimentation fluxes of the diatom species and their temporal dynamics to better understand the magnitude of silica and carbon fluxes. Sediment-traps were exposed at three different depths and collected monthly. A total of 13 diatom species were observed in the traps. The maximum diatom flux was in February (304 × 106 cells m−2 day−1) related to the winter diatom bloom. The diatom silica (DSi) fluxes varied from 2.2 to 2,997 mg m−2 day−1 and the diatom carbon (DC) fluxes from 1.2 to 2,918 mg m−2 d−1. Cyclotella alchichicana was the main contributor (>98%) to the total DSi and DC fluxes. The annual diatom (15 × 109 cells m−2 year−1), DSi (147 g m−2 year−1) and DC (92 g m−2 year−1) fluxes are higher than in other aquatic ecosystems of similar or even higher trophic conditions. Our findings in Alchichica are indicative of the relevance of the phytoplankton type and size in understanding the role tropical and oligotrophic lakes play regarding silica and carbon fluxes. In addition, our results support previous findings suggesting that inland aquatic ecosystems are more important than formerly thought in processing carbon, and can, therefore, affect regional carbon balances.  相似文献

Increasing trends of dissolved Si measured by a colorimetric method and ICP (DSicol and DSiICP, respectively) and total Si concentrations were detected at the center of Lake Kasumigaura during 1980–2006 (mean DSicol concentration in the 1980s and 2000s was 1.3 and 4.0 mg l−1, respectively). The observation of such trends is rare; therefore, the elucidation of the causes could be useful to understanding silicon dynamics in inland waters. Based on statistical analysis, we found that the increases in DSicol and lithogenic Si accounted for most of the total Si increase (44 and 45%, respectively) and that biogenic Si, consisting of diatom frustules, also increased with them. Increases in DSiICP concentration were not detected near the mouth of the inflowing rivers, suggesting that the increase was caused by in-lake processes. Because the increase in suspended solids (SS) caused by sediment resuspension had been observed in the lake for the same period, we assumed that the Si release from SS containing diatom frustules contributed to the increase. The results of the laboratory experiments in which surface sediments were stirred in lake waters showed that the change in DSicol concentration depended mainly on SS concentration, water temperature and the elapsed time of diatom frustules dissolution. An estimation of the released amount of Si from SS using the sediment resuspension model was (1.0–2.7) × 109 g year−1 in the 2000s, which was about 30–90% of the increase in the DSicol outflow of 3.0 × 109 g year−1 from the 1980s to the 2000s. We also determined the Si release rates from bottom sediments through laboratory experiments. The Si amount released from bottom sediments in the lake in the 2000s was estimated to be 4.3 × 109 g year−1, which was about 2–4 times higher than the estimated Si amount released from SS. These findings suggest that the sediment resuspension might be the cause of the latest DSi increase.  相似文献

Human activities have altered riverine silica cycling and diminished the supply of silica to the oceans, but few rivers have been intensively monitored to evaluate the magnitude of these changes. In this study we measured dissolved silica (DSi) and amorphous silica (ASi) fluxes into and out of two large, culturally-impacted natural impoundments of the upper Mississippi River, Lakes St. Croix and Pepin, USA. ASi sedimentation rates and sediment–water fluxes of DSi were calculated for each lake, and a mass-balance approach was used to determine in-lake ASi production. ASi from terrestrial phytoliths in the lake sediments was determined to be only partially available to biotic recycling, and in-lake ASi dissolution was small relative to the total silica budgets. The river reaches upstream of the two lakes were found to have abundant DSi, and riverine diatom production was found to contribute significant amounts of ASi to each lake. The average total phosphorus concentration in Lake Pepin is four times that in Lake St. Croix but ASi production in Lake Pepin is only 2.3 times higher than in Lake St. Croix, indicating that diatom growth in Pepin is limited by factors such as turbidity. Lake St. Croix currently traps about 10% of the inflowing total bioavailable silica (TSib = DSi + ASi) while Lake Pepin traps closer to 20% of its inflowing TSib, clearly demonstrating the importance of silica retention in lakes and reservoirs along the land–ocean continuum.  相似文献

Weathering of silicate minerals releases dissolved silicate (DSi) to the soil-vegetation system. Accumulation and recycling of this DSi by terrestrial ecosystems creates a pool of reactive Si on the continents that buffers DSi export to the ocean. Human perturbations to the functioning of the buffer have been a recent research focus, yet a common assumption is that the continental Si cycle is at steady-state. However, we have no good idea of the timescales of ecosystem Si pool equilibration with their environments. A review of modelling and geochemical considerations suggests the modern continental Si cycle is in fact characterised in the long-term by an active accumulation of reactive Si, at least partially attributable to lakes and reservoirs. These lentic systems accumulate Si via biological conversion of DSi to biogenic silica (BSi). An analysis of new and published data for nearly 700 systems is presented to assess their contribution to the accumulating continental pool. Surface sediment BSi concentrations (n = 692) vary between zero and >60 % SiO2 by weight, apparently independently of lake size, location or water chemistry. Using sediment core BSi accumulation rates (n = 109), still no relationships are found with lake or catchment parameters. However, issues associated with single-core accumulation rates should in any case preclude their use in elemental accumulation calculations. Based on lake/reservoir mass-balances (n = 34), our best global-scale estimate of combined lake and reservoir Si retention is 1.53 TMol year?1, or 21–27 % of river DSi export. Again, no scalable relationships are apparent, suggesting Si retention is a complex process that varies from catchment to catchment. The lake Si sink has implications for estimation of weathering flux generation from river chemistry. The size of the total continental Si pool is poorly constrained, as is its accumulation rate, but lakes clearly contribute substantially. A corollary to this emerging understanding is that the flux and isotopic composition of DSi delivered to the ocean has likely varied over time, partly mediated by a fluctuating continental pool, including in lakes.  相似文献

The quantification of silicon (Si) uptake by tree species is a mandatory step to study the role of forest vegetations in the global cycle of Si. Forest tree species can impact the hydrological output of dissolved Si (DSi) through root induced weathering of silicates but also through Si uptake and restitution via litterfall. Here, monospecific stands of Douglas fir, Norway spruce, Black pine, European beech and oak established in identical soil and climate conditions were used to quantify Si uptake, immobilization and restitution. We measured the Si contents in various compartments of the soil–tree system and we further studied the impact of the recycling of Si by forest trees on the DSi pool. Si is mainly accumulated in leaves and needles in comparison with other tree compartments (branches, stembark and stemwood). The immobilization of Si in tree biomass represents less than 15% of the total Si uptake. Annual Si uptake by oak and European beech stands is 18.5 and 23.3 kg ha?1 year?1, respectively. Black pine has a very low annual Si uptake (2.3 kg ha?1 year?1) in comparison with Douglas fir (30.6 kg ha?1 year?1) and Norway spruce (43.5 kg ha?1 year?1). The recycling of Si by forest trees plays a major role in the continental Si cycle since tree species greatly influence the uptake and restitution of Si. Moreover, we remark that the annual tree uptake is negatively correlated with the annual DSi output at 60 cm depth. The land–ocean fluxes of DSi are certainly influenced by geochemical processes such as weathering of primary minerals and formation of secondary minerals but also by biological processes such as root uptake.  相似文献

The sequestration and recycling of biogenic silica (BSi) in freshwater tidal marshes was modelled through the combination of short-term year round sediment trap data with a long-term sedimentation model, MARSED. The modelling was implemented through the complete evolution from a young rapidly rising marsh to a marsh with an elevation close to mean high water. BSi in imported suspended matter was higher in summer (10.9 mg BSi g−1 sediment) than winter (7.6 mg BSi g−1 sediment). However, the deposition of BSi on the marsh surface was higher in winter compared to summer, due to the higher sedimentation rates. Deposition of BSi was correlated to the suspended matter deposition. In the old marsh, yearly about 40 g BSi m−2 was deposited, while in the young marsh deposition could rise up to 300 g m−2. Young marshes retained up to 85% of the imported biogenic silica. Recycling efficiency (60%) increased drastically for older marshes. The study shows that marshes act as important sinks for BSi along estuaries. The recycling of the imported BSi to DSi in summer and spring is most likely an essential factor in the buffering role of tidal marshes for estuarine DSi concentrations.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that reservoirs with low water residence time and autochthonous production influence river biogeochemistry in eutrophied river systems draining cultivated watersheds. The effect of a single artificial water reservoir and consecutive reservoirs on silica (Si) river fluxes is exemplified by the moderately dammed Vistula River and the heavily regulated Daugava River that are compared with the practically undammed Oder River. The sum of the discharge weighted annual mean biogenic silica (BSi) and dissolved silicate (DSi) concentrations in the rivers Oder, Vistula and Daugava were about 160 μ M (40 + 120 μ M), 150 μ M (20 + 130 μ M) and 88 μ M (6 + 82 μ M), respectively. Assuming BSi and DSi concentrations as observed in the Oder River as typical for eutrophied but undammed rivers, complete trapping of this BSi could have lowered Si fluxes to the Baltic Sea from rivers with cultivated watersheds by 25%. The superimposed effect of hydrological alterations on reduced Si land–sea fluxes is demonstrated by studies in the boreal/subarctic and oligotrophic rivers Kalixälven and Lueälven. The DSi yield of the heavily dammed Luleälven (793 kg km?2 yr?1) constituted only 63% of that was found in the unregulated Kalixälven (1261 kg km?2 yr?1), despite the specific runoff of the Luleälven (672 mm m?2 yr?1) being 19% higher than that of theKalixälven (563 mm m?2 yr?1); runoff normalized DSi yield of the former, regulated watershed, was only half the DSi yield of the latter, unperturbed watershed. Based on these findings, it is hypothesized here that perturbed surface water–groundwater interactions are the major reasons for the reduced annual fluctuations in DSi concentrations as also seen in the heavily dammed and eutrophic river systems such as the Daugava and Danube.  相似文献

The Pawcatuck river watershed (797 km2) is located in southern Rhode Island and northeastern Connecticut. The predominant lithology of the area is granite, and over 60% of the watershed remains forested with mixed hardwoods (primarily oak) and eastern white pine. As part of a larger study of nutrient and sediment exports from the watershed to Little Narragansett Bay, we measured dissolved silica (SiO2) (DSi) concentrations at the river mouth over 70 times between January 14, 2002 and November 29, 2002. Annual export of DSi during our study was 40 × 106 mol or 50 kmol km−2. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) obtained DSi concentrations at this site, at varying frequencies, from 1978 to the present, which allowed for a historical comparison of this study with previous years. River DSi concentrations exhibited a strong seasonal signal that did not vary in a regular way with water discharge or water temperature. DSi and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations were significantly related over the annual cycle (p<0.0001) and both decreased substantially during the spring. Dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) did not covary at any time with silica or nitrogen, suggesting that in-stream biological uptake was not responsible for the seasonal decline in silica. The spring decline in river silica concentrations may be due to silica uptake by terrestrial vegetation. We estimate a net forest silica accretion rate of 41 kmol km−2 y−1, a value that is stoichiometrically consistent with other measurements of net carbon accretion in nearby forests.  相似文献

To determine the chemical and physicochemical characteristics of dissolved organic carbon in the Ado River and the Yasu River, the main rivers flowing into Lake Biwa, the adsorption behavior onto hydrous iron oxide (HIO) and the reactivity to KMnO4 oxidant were investigated in parallel with measurement of the distribution profiles of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) along the rivers. In one year of observation at the mouths of the two rivers, DOC concentrations were found to vary in the Ado over the range 0.28–1.21 mg C l−1 and in the Yasu over the range 1.01–2.68 mg C l−1. Act-DOC, one of the fractions separated from the total DOC by its adsorption-active character onto HIO at pH 4, was thought primarily to control the variation of total DOC, as in Lake Biwa. The int-DOC, another fraction separated by its adsorption-inert or -inactive character onto HIO, remained at almost a steady value around 0.18 ± 0.07 mg C l−1 in the Ado, which was lower than that (0.35 ± 0.05 mg C l−1) in Lake Biwa. The act-DOC in river waters was reactive to KMnO4 oxidant, showing a linear relation with the amount of permanganate consumed for the reaction (chemical oxygen demand: COD). In river waters, the relation can be approximated by a straight line expressed as COD (mg O2 l−1) = 0.64 × act-DOC (mg C l−1) − 0.02. In contrast, in the lake water the relation was COD (mg O2 l−1) = 0.97 × act-DOC (mg C l−1) − 0.50. Received: March 3, 1999 / Accepted: December 2, 1999  相似文献

Lamprocystis roseopersicina was found to be the dominant phototrophic bacterium in meromictic Deadmoose Lake. Using carbon-14 it was determined that phototrophic bacteria fixed 14.3 g C m−2 year−1, 17.1 % of the total limnetic primary production. Experiments indicated low light intensities (X = 8.87 × 10−2 cal cm−2hr−1) to be the most important factor limiting bacterial production. Lamprocystis was shown to be capable of photoorganoheterotrophic uptake of glucose.  相似文献

The cyprinid species of the genus Gnathopogon, exhibiting flexible morphological and ecological variation, include limnetic life forms. We examined the origin of the limnetic forms and the population divergence of the Japanese Gnathopogon species, using molecular phylogenetic and phylogeographic analyses. A Bayesian phylogenetic inference approach based on mtDNA cytochrome b sequence data revealed three major lineages in G. elongatus. One of them formed a monophyletic group with the limnetic species G. caerulescens, which is endemic to an ancient lake, Lake Biwa. The divergence of the G. caerulescens lineage was estimated to date back to the early Pleistocene. This precedes the formation of the extensive pelagic environment in the present Lake Biwa. However, the recent genetic divergence of G. caerulescens was inferred to originate in the present Lake Biwa in the late Pleistocene. Another lacustrine population in the Mikata Lakes was shown to belong to a different lineage from G. caerulescens. The majority of the population possessed unique, but non-monophyletic, haplotypes, suggesting a short evolutionary history. One of the cryptic lineages of G. elongatus discovered in the Ina Valley, the lower area of Lake Suwa, might be related to the extinct lacustrine subspecies G. elongatus suwae, which has been replaced by introduced congeners. The previous and ongoing introductions of Gnathopogon fishes would have produced genetic disturbance to the indigenous populations.  相似文献

The average composition of water, bottom sediments, manganese (Mn) crusts, and Mn concretions from Lake Biwa (the largest freshwater lake in Japan) are re-examined, in conjunction with those of seawater, oceanic pelagic clay, and deep-sea Mn nodules. The purpose is to gain additional insights into the geochemical behaviors of elements in Lake Biwa and the ocean, which are quite different in ionic strength (or salinity), pH, water residence times, sediment accumulation rates, carbon fluxes to sediments, and the redox potential in sediments. Excluding a few millimeters of oxic surface sediment, there is no appreciable accumulation of Mn in the Lake Biwa bottom sediments due to reducing condition there. Consequently, other B-type cations [such as iron (Fe), gallium (Ga), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), cobalt (Co), tin (Sn), and bismuth (Bi), with subshell valence electron configuration of d 1−10] are also less concentrated in the lake sediments than in the oceanic pelagic clay. In turn, B-type cations have much higher dissolved concentrations in the lake water than in the ocean. The rare earth elements (REE) mainly form organic complexes in the lake water and carbonate complexes in the ocean. REE are mostly associated with detritus aluminosilicate phases in Lake Biwa sediments but with phosphate phases in deep-sea sediments. Fe and Mn oxide phases are clearly separated in marine Mn nodules and crusts but not in Mn crusts and concretions from Lake Biwa. Useful parameters such as the enrichment factor (E Al) and logarithms of the distribution coefficient (log K d) of elements between solid and liquid phases were estimated in both systems for further discussions.  相似文献

The dissolved oxygen concentration in the sediment pore water downstream of rivers in the Lake Biwa basin was measured, and the factors affecting the dissolved oxygen concentration were analyzed. In August 2003, nine rivers (Sakai, Nakanoi, Hebisuna, Anziki, Yasu, Echi, Ane, Oh, and Ohura) were surveyed. The dissolved oxygen was depleted in the sediment pore water of the rivers with a high proportion of particles less than 250 μm in size. For these rivers, the difference between the dissolved oxygen concentrations of the river surface water and the pore water was large, ranging from −9.54 to −5.26 mg L−1. It was found that the proportion of land turned to paddy fields has an effect on the percentage of the particles below 250 μm (standard partial regression coefficient = 0.807, p = 0.023). These results suggest that, in the Lake Biwa basin, the sedimentation of the fine particles released from paddy fields results in poor dissolved oxygen in the river sediment downstream. In addition, the water flow conditions in small- and medium-scale rivers without headwaters also affect the sedimentation of suspended particles.  相似文献

A Phosphorus Budget for the Lake Mendota Watershed   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
A phosphorus (P) budget was calculated for the agriculture-dominated Lake Mendota watershed located in Dane and Columbia Counties, Wisconsin, USA. P inputs included fertilizer for agricultural crops and lawns, dietary supplements for dairy cattle, and natural inputs such as dry and wet deposition. Outputs included agricultural crops, livestock and livestock products, and hydrologic export to Lake Mendota. The total P input to the watershed (1,307,000 kg year 1) and total output (732,000 kg year 1) are large relative to the average of 34,000 kg P washing into the lake each year, indicating that the P flux that eutrophies Lake Mendota is a veryminor component of the total watershed P budget. Using the formula inputs outputs = change in storage, we found that 575,000 kg P accumulated in the watershed in 1995. This estimate was corroborated by long-term soil P concentration data, which showed an average annual increase in soil P of over 450,000 kg year 1. Future management programs designed to reduce P inputs to Lake Mendota will be compelled to cope with the large amount of P being stored in the watershed. Seasonal characteristics of surface water fulvic acids (FAs) isolated from Japanese clear-water lakes were investigated. Qualitative changes in Lake Biwa and Lake Tankai FAs were determined and compared. Although the relative molecular weights determined by high-performance size-exclusion chromatography did not change remarkably, the elemental compositions, E6001% E_{600}^{1\% } values and 1H- and 13C-NMR spectral properties varied with the season. Both the H/C and N/C ratios for Lake Biwa FAs tended to be higher than those for Lake Tankai FAs, but O/C ratios were lower and decreased from spring to winter. The E6001% E_{600}^{1\% } values suggested that Lake Biwa FAs contained lower levels of unsaturated structures than Lake Tankai FAs, and the amounts of these structures increased in winter. The 1H and 13C NMR spectra indicated that Lake Biwa FAs are richer in saturated aliphatic chains, especially in spring. Overall, Lake Biwa FAs exhibited clearer seasonal changes in these characteristics than Lake Tankai FAs, suggesting that the seasonal variation may depend on changes in aquatic microbial activities.  相似文献

Silica retention in the Three Gorges Reservoir   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A mass balance of dissolved silica (DSi) based on daily measurements at the inflow and outflow of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) in 2007 and a more precise budget, with inflow, outflow, primary production, biogenic silica (BSi) settlement, dissolution of BSi in the water column and flux of DSi at the sediment–water interface in the dry season (April) of 2007 were developed. We address the following question: How much does the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) affect silica transport in the TGR of the Changjiang River (Yangtze River)? The DSi varied from 71.1 to 141 μmol/l with an average of 108 μmol/l, and it ranged between 68.1 and 136 μmol/l, with an average of 107 μmol/l in inflow and outflow, respectively, in the TGR in 2007. The linear relationship of DSi between inflow and outflow water is significant (r = 0.87, n = 362, p < 0.01). Along the main stream of the TGR, the DSi concentration decreases with an average concentration of 84.0 μmol/l in the dry season. However, the stratification of DSi was not obvious in the main channel of the TGR in the dry season. The BSi is within the range of 0.04–5.00 μmol/l, with an average concentration of 2.1 μmol/l in the main channel of the TGR, while it is much higher in Xiangxi Bay (1.30–47.7 μmol/l, 13.1 μmol/l) than in the main stream of the TGR and the other bays. After the third filling of the TGR, approximately 3.8% of the DSi was retained by the TGR based on a 12-month monitoring scheme in 2007, which would slightly reduce nutrient fluxes of the Changjiang River to the East China Sea (2%). DSi was lost during January to June and November, whereas the additions of DSi were found during the other months in 2007. The budget results also indicate that there is a slight retention of DSi. The retention of DSi in the reservoir is approximately 2.9%, while BSi is approximately 44%. Compared with the total silica load, the retention of DSi and BSi in the reservoir is only 5.0% in the dry season. With its present storage capacity, the reservoir does not play an important role as a silica sink in the channel of the TGR. The DSi load is significantly related to discharge both in inflow and outflow waters (p < 0.01). DSi retention, to some extent, is the runoff change due to impoundment.  相似文献

Production-to-respiration (P:R) ratio was estimated at an offshore site of Lake Biwa in order to examine whether the plankton and benthic community is subsidized with allochthonous organic carbon, and to clarify the role of this lake as potential source or sink of carbon dioxide. The respiration rate of protozoan and metazoan plankton was calculated from their biomass and empirical equations of oxygen consumption rates, and that of bacterioplankton was derived from their production rate and growth efficiency. In addition, the carbon mineralization rate in the lake sediments was estimated from the accumulation rate of organic carbon, which was determined using a 210Pb dating technique. On an annual basis, the sum of respiration rates of heterotrophic plankton was comparable to net primary production rate measured by the 13C method. However, when the mineralization rate in the lake sediments was included, the areal P:R ratio was 0.89, suggesting that Lake Biwa is net heterotrophic at the offshore site with the community being subsidized with allochthonous organic carbon. Such a view was supported by the surface water pCO2 that was on average higher than that of the atmosphere. However, the estimate of net CO2 release rate was close to that of carbon burial rate in the sediments. The result suggests that the role of Lake Biwa in relation to atmospheric carbon is almost null at the offshore site, although the community is supported partially by organic carbon released from the surrounding areas.  相似文献

Primary production of microphytobenthos (MPB) contributes significantly to the total production in shallow coastal environments. MPB is a diverse community in which diatoms are usually the main microalgal group. Diatoms require N, P, and other nutrients as with other autotrophs, but in addition require silicate to create their outer cell wall. Therefore, dissolved silica (DSi) might be a potential limiting factor for benthic primary production in areas with reduced freshwater input. To test this hypothesis, a microcosm experiment was conducted using intact sediment cores collected from an intertidal mudflat in the Bay of Cádiz and supplied with increasing concentrations of DSi (0, 5, 10, 25, and 45 μmol · L?1). After 7 d of enrichment, we determined chlorophyll a and c (Chl a, c) contents, metabolic rates (Net [Pn] and Areal Gross [PgA] Production and Light [RL] and Dark [RD] Respiration), as well as fluxes of inorganic nutrients across the sediment‐water interface. Chl a and c contents increased significantly with respect to the initial conditions but no differences between treatments were found. Both Pn and PgA showed a saturating‐like pattern with silicate concentration, reaching maximum rates at a DSi concentration of 45 μmol · L?1. The addition of DSi also resulted in an increase of DSi and ammonium uptake by the sediment, which was significantly higher in light than in darkness. Our results clearly show that water column DSi concentrations have a direct impact on benthic primary production, also controlling other related processes such as inorganic nutrient fluxes.  相似文献

Regional variability in the annual fluxes of particulate organic carbon (POC) and biogenic silica (Si) at the periphery of the Mackenzie Shelf (Beaufort Sea) was investigated using eight long-term sediment traps moored at ~100-m depth. Relatively high autochthonous POC and Si fluxes were recorded in the Mackenzie Trough (4.1 and 8.9 g m−2 year−1 respectively) and off Cape Bathurst (6.6 and 79 g m−2 year−1), two areas where upwelling events are frequently observed. Diatomaceous new production was minimum on the mid-slope of the Mackenzie Shelf (2.8 g C m−2 year−1), moderate in the Mackenzie Trough (14.5 g C m−2 year−1), and highest off Cape Bathurst (128.7 g C m−2 year−1). High annual autochthonous POC flux corresponded to high diatom production. Among sites, the vertical attenuation of the POC flux increased with diatomaceous new production. Hence, the retention of autochthonous POC in the surface layer (<100 m) was highest (95%) at the highly productive site off Cape Bathurst, intermediate (72%) in the moderately productive Mackenzie Trough, and low (4%) at the unproductive mid-slope of the shelf. Our results indicate that, on Arctic shelves, upwelling and the production of diatoms increase the fraction of the POC which is retained in the surface layer and diverted to the pelagic food web. In the relatively unproductive waters of the Arctic Ocean, biological hot spots such as the one identified off Cape Bathurst where the food web promotes retention rather than vertical export could be disproportionately important as feeding grounds for higher trophic levels.  相似文献

The ability of photoautotrophic picoplankton Synechococcus to degrade urea was examined in the euphotic zone of Lake Biwa. Samples were divided into pico (0.2–2.0 μm) and larger (>2.0 μm) size fractions by filtration. The rates of urea degradation (the sum of the rates of incorporation of carbon into phytoplankton cells and of liberation of CO2 into water) measured by radiocarbon urea were 8 and 17 μmol urea m−3 day−1 in June and July, respectively, for the picophytoplankton in the surface water, and 196 and 96 μmol urea m−3 day−1, respectively for the larger phytoplankton. The rates decreased with depth, somewhat similar to the vertical profiles of the photosynthetic rate. The urea degradation rates were obviously high under light conditions. In daylight, urea was degraded into two phases, carbon incorporation and CO2 liberation, whereas in the dark it was degraded only into the CO2 liberation phase. The contribution of picophytoplankton to total phytoplankton in urea degradation was high in the subsurface to lower euphotic layer. Urea degradation activity was higher in the picophytoplankton fraction than in the larger phytoplankton fraction. Shorter residence times of urea were obtained in the upper euphotic zone. The contribution of picophytoplankton to urea cycling was 4% to 35%. The present results suggest that the picophytoplankton Synechococcus is able to degrade urea and effectively makes use of regenerated urea as a nitrogen source in the euphotic layer, and that picophytoplankton play an important role in the biogeochemical nitrogen cycle in Lake Biwa.
