We characterized 24 polymorphic tetranucleotide microsatellite loci for delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) endemic to the San Francisco Bay Estuary, CA, USA. Screening of samples (n = 30) yielded two to 26 alleles per locus with observed levels of heterozygosity ranging from 0.17 to 1.0. Only one locus deviated from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, suggesting these individuals originate from a single panmictic population. Linkage disequilibrium was found in two pairs of loci after excluding the locus out of Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. Twenty‐two primer pairs cross‐amplified in wakasagi smelt (Hypomesus nipponensis), and 15 primer pairs cross‐amplified in longfin smelt (Spirinchus thaleichthys).  相似文献

Hybridization among closely related species may pose a threat to species persistence, especially between native and introduced species. We analyzed nine microsatellite loci, mitochondrial sequences and 16 species-specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in two native species (delta smelt and longfin smelt) and one introduced species (wakasagi smelt) in the family Osmeridae to describe the extent of hybridization among these species in the San Francisco Bay-Delta, CA, USA. We identified 29 putative hybrids with a microsatellite-based Bayesian assignment method, and we further screened these putative hybrids with the SNP loci and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequencing. From the Yolo Bypass, 11 % of morphologically ambiguous individuals were F1 hybrids and 0.1 % of positively identified delta smelt from throughout the San Francisco Bay-Delta were F1 hybrids according to their SNP genotypes. mtDNA sequencing revealed wakasagi smelt as the maternal parent for all five delta smelt × wakasagi smelt hybrids and longfin smelt as the maternal parent for the single longfin smelt × delta smelt hybrid. Hybridization among these three species appears to occur at relatively low frequencies and may not be an immediate threat to the persistence of the imperiled native species; however, the presence of hybrid individuals warrants continued monitoring.  相似文献

Bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix, are recreationally valuable finfish along the Atlantic seaboard and in the Chesapeake Bay. Diet and habitat use patterns for bluefish life history intervals in Chesapeake Bay estuaries are poorly described although it is widely acknowledged that this apex piscivorous species relies on estuarine habitat for feeding and nursery grounds after oceanic spawning and inshore migration of larvae. Bluefish diet, distribution, and abundance patterns were examined in relation to oyster reef, oyster bar, and sand bottom habitat in the Piankatank River, Virginia. Bluefish from all sites were predominantly piscivorous and were more abundant at reef sites than non-reef sites. Bluefish caught in association with the oyster reef consumed a wider diversity of prey items than fish from other sites; diet diversity may contribute to bluefish success during periods when small pelagic food fish abundance is reduced. Bluefish estuarine habitat use is positively correlated with the presence of oyster shell habitat and the complex trophic communities centering on oyster reefs.  相似文献

We have developed species-specific TaqMan assays for two California fish species, the threatened delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) and the introduced wakasagi smelt (Hypomesus nipponensis). The assays are capable of correctly identifying each species with 100% accuracy, with no cross-species amplification. We anticipate these assays will prove useful for future scientific studies requiring genetic species identification (e.g. predation of smelt) or monitoring (e.g. detection of delta smelt near water diversions).  相似文献

Populations of anadromous European smelt Osmerus eperlanus (L.) are declining across its geographical range in northern Europe, but no practical culture techniques exist to develop stock enhancement programmes for this species. In this study, a culture protocol is described to rear fish from fertilised eggs to mature adults in 2 years involving the use of ‘green water’, live feed and artificial diets. The sequence of embryonic development for eggs incubated at 10°C/0 ppt was described and photographed. To determine the optimum conditions for larval culture, fertilised eggs were reared at a range of salinities (0–20 ppt) and temperatures (5–18°C) until first feeding. Best hatching success (ca. 97%), size at hatch (ca. 0.8 mm) and survival to first feeding (ca. 96%) of larvae were achieved under combined conditions of low salinity (0–0 ppt) and temperature (5–10°C). No larvae survived a salinity of 20 ppt. The time taken from fertilisation to hatch (FtH) and hatching duration (HD) were temperature-dependent ranging from 42 days FtH and 10 days HD at 5ºC, to 10 days FtH and 2 days HD at 18°C irrespective of salinity. The results indicate that conservation programmes could utilise existing salmonid hatchery facilities (i.e. freshwater, ≤10°C water temperature) for stock enhancement. Since on-growing of smelt involves the logistical and technical problems of live feed production, it is recommended that smelt enhancement programme utilise freshwater hatchery facilities to rear fish until hatching, and then stock out onto known spawning grounds in rivers allowing hatched larvae to drift into estuaries to complete the larval and juvenile phases. This approach would minimise the time spent in the hatchery post-hatching, eliminate the need for live food production, prevent the development of predator-naïve fish, and hence would mimic the natural life cycle of the species as closely as possible.  相似文献

Juvenile smelt, Osmerus mordax, were collected from four eelgrass, Zostera marina, beds in the Great Bay Estuary, two within Great Bay and two located nearer the coast. Lapillar otoliths were used to estimate the ages of the smelt and to calculate daily somatic growth based on the widths of otolith increments. Smelt collected from the Bay sites were consistently younger and shorter in total length than smelt collected from the coastal sites. A repeated measures analysis of variance found significant differences among growth trajectories of smelt grouped by their dates of birth.  相似文献

In California’s Sacramento-San Joaquin estuary, environmental protection and habitat restoration efforts directed at a threatened native osmerid, the delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus), are complicated by the presence of a morphologically similar non-native congener, the wakasagi (H. nipponensis), transported to the estuary from upstream reservoirs. In order to better define delta smelt critical habitat and to evaluate the potential for habitat overlap by these two species, we compared the tolerances of the two species to temperature, salinity, and water velocity, environmental factors that vary spatially and temporally within the estuary. For fishes acclimated to 17°C and fresh water (0 ppt), we measured critical thermal maxima and minima, chronic upper salinity tolerance limits, and critical swimming velocities. Wakasagi had higher critical thermal maxima (29.1°C vs. 25.4°C for delta smelt), lower critical thermal minima (2.3°C vs. 7.5°C for delta smelt), higher upper salinity tolerances (26.8 ppt vs. 19.1 ppt for delta smelt), and swam faster (for 6–6.9 cm SL fish, 43.3 cm s–1 vs. 28.2 cm s–1 for delta smelt) than delta smelt. This suggests that the wide seasonal and year-to-year fluctuations in temperature, salinity, and flow typical in the estuary would not exclude wakasagi, although their eggs and larvae may be less tolerant. With respect to these factors, the native delta smelt may be at a physiological disadvantage, particularly in habitats with suboptimal environmental conditions, and may be excluded from shallow-water habitat restoration sites, which are characterized by poor circulation, low flows, and more environmentally extreme conditions. The low abundance of wakasagi in the estuary recorded to date may indicate that factors other than temperature, salinity, and flow determine wakasagi distribution. The fish community in Tjeukemeer was monitored from 1971 to 1988 by trawling, and during the summer of 1988 the distribution of the more abundant species was determined in relation to size and location. Bream, pikeperch and smelt were the most dominant fishes, whereas roach, white bream, perch and ruffe comprised <10% of the total catches. After the termination in 1977 of the intensive gillnet fishery both pikeperch >50 cm and bream >30 cm increased in biomass, but roach >15 cm and perch >15 cm virtually disappeared and pikeperch <50 cm substantially decreased. Only smelt, ruffe, white bream and bream <30 cm hardly changed in biomass. Bream, pikeperch, perch and smelt were restricted to the open water zone, but roach <15 cm and 0 + bream were confined to the littoral zone. White bream and ruffe did not show a distinct habitat preference. Because the recruitment of smelt is largely dependent on immigration from the IJsselmeer, a feed-back between the smelt and pikeperch population is lacking. Because the carrying capacity of the pikeperch population is mainly determined by smelt, the other fish <15 cm are very vulnerable to predation when the smelt population is consumed, before a new year-class of smelt is recruited, or when the smelt fails to recruit. The interplay between structural connectivity ( i.e. habitat continuity) and functional connectivity ( i.e. dispersal probability) in marine fishes was examined in a coastal fjord (Holyrood Pond, Newfoundland, Canada) that is completely isolated from the North Atlantic Ocean for most of the year. Genetic differentiation was described in three species (rainbow smelt Osmerus mordax , white hake Urophycis tenuis and Atlantic cod Gadus morhua ) with contrasting life histories using seven to 10 microsatellite loci and a protein-coding locus, Pan I ( G. morhua ). Analysis of microsatellite differentiation indicated clear genetic differences between the fjord and coastal regions; however, the magnitude of difference was no more elevated than adjacent bays and was not enhanced by the fjord's isolation. Osmerus mordax was characterized by the highest structure overall with moderate differentiation between the fjord and St Mary's Bay ( F ST c. 0·047). In contrast, U. tenuis and G. morhua displayed weak differentiation ( F ST < 0·01). Nonetheless, these populations did demonstrate high rates (< 75%) of Bayesian self-assignment. Furthermore, elevated differentiation was observed at the Pan I locus in G. morhua between the fjord and other coastal locations. Interestingly, locus-specific genetic differentiation and expected heterozygosity were negatively associated in O. mordax , in contrast to the positive associations observed in U. tenuis and G. morhua . Gene flow in these species is apparently unencumbered by limited structural connectivity, yet the observed differentiation suggests that population structuring exists over small scales despite high dispersal potential.  相似文献

Summary Evidence from both field observations and experimental work indicates that predation by larvae of a midge, Pentaneura n. sp. (Chironomidae), causes the low densities of mosquito larvae (Culicidae) found in the water filled bracts of Heliconia imbricata (Musaceae), microhabitats typically colonized by mosquitoes. This predation affects 2 species of mosquitoes, Wyeomyia pseudopecten, a resident species, and Trichoprosopon digitatum, a non-resident species. Predation keeps resident mosquito densities low while completely excluding the nonresident mosquito from the habitat. Both these effects of predation depend on the presence of an abundant alternative prey, an undescribed species of harpacticoid copepod found in the bracts. These copepod prey sustain chironomids when resident mosquito densities are low, permiting predator densities to remain high enough to exclude the non-resident mosquito. I discuss the evolutionary and ecological implications of predation structuring communities.  相似文献

In 1980 a long-term study of the fishery resources of the San Francisco Bay estuary was initiated in an effort to delineate the importance of freshwater inflow to fish and invertebrate abundance and distribution in the bay. An analysis of the trawl data collected between January 1980 and December 1982 illustrates the influence of the timing and magnitude of freshwater inflows on fish fistribution and abundance in this estuary from the perspective of monthly, seasonal and annual time scales. Normally found in the delta, Suisun Bay and San Pablo Bay during periods of increased salinity, pelagic species moved downstream after the two peak flows studied, while demersal species usually found in Central San Francisco Bay moved upstream. Such upstream movements may be due in part to transport by strong density-driven currents.Timing and magnitude of monthly catches of some species varied on a seasonal cycle coincident with variations of freshwater inflow. Most species, especially the marine species, showed no consistent cycle of monthly catches. In the wet years of 1980 and 1982 the distributions of freshwater, estuarine and anadromous species were extended downstream into San Pablo, Central and South San Francisco Bays and some marine species, including the flatfish, were more abundant in the upstream areas. In the dry year of 1981 when bay salinities were higher, few marine species extended their distributions upstream into San Pablo and Suisun Bays. Jacksmelt was the only fish of the 15 most abundant species with its peak abundance in 1981. Most marine species were more abundant in the San Francisco Bay estuary in the wet years.  相似文献

In the eastern Gulf of Finland, European smelt Osmerus eperlanus occurs as an anadromous ecological form that spawns in coastal, low-salinity zones and in several rivers entering the gulf, most importantly in the River Neva. Osmerus eperlanus is a key commercial fish species for the population of St. Petersburg, and the city's fish symbol. However, the state of the smelt stock has considerably deteriorated over the past few decades. Monitoring shows that annual catches during 1965–1992 averaged 2274 t, compared to 292 t in 2002–2017, although some improvement is inidicated by a gradual increase in catches in recent years (e.g., to 595 t in 2017). This paper addresses long-term and recent changes in the fisheries for smelt in the eastern Gulf of Finland, including both commercial and recreational fisheries, and the range of fishing gears used. The commercial smelt fishery is mainly conducted during the spawning period (April–May) on migrating fish, using trap nets of various designs and beach seines. There has been an increase in recreational fisheries for smelt; in years when ice cover on the gulf during winter (December–April) is steady, recreational fishers from St. Petersburg, using hook and line, may catch quantities that are comparable to those of commercial catches. Several factors may account for the stock dynamics and associated changes in catches of smelt: these include a decrease in prey availability in the gulf; loss and degradation of spawning and nursery habitats, partly associated with large-scale hydroengineering operations in Neva Bay; and illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing which became widespread in post-Soviet decades. In spite of a gradual increase in smelt abundance in the most recent 15 years, a failure to accurately monitor and manage the extent of IUU and recreational fishing for smelt, to assess the status of the stock, or to forecast catches, increases the risk of overfishing of the spawning stock.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of four pelagic fish species was studied in relation to their prey availability in the Gulf of Riga (Baltic Sea) during the summer 1999-2006. The zooplankton community was dominated by the cladoceran Bosmina longispina, rotifers Keratella cochlearis and K. quadrata and the copepod Eurytemora affinis, with the highest interannual variability in abundance recorded for B. longispina. The last influenced the diet of adult sprat Sprattus sprattus, juvenile smelt Osmerus eperlanus and three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus as these were strongly selecting for B. longispina. The fish feeding activity did not match the abundance dynamics of their preferred prey, suggesting that fishes may switch to consume other prey in case the preferred diet was limited. A considerable dietary overlap indicated high potential competition between pelagic fish species. While herring Clupea harengus membras and G. aculeatus were relying on very different food, the diets of young O. eperlanus and G. aculeatus were very similar. Interannual variability in zooplankton composition and abundance significantly affected the diet composition of fishes, but those changes were insufficient to exert a consistent influence upon fish feeding activity and total amounts of zooplankton consumed.  相似文献

A captive breeding programme was developed in 2008 for delta smelt Hypomesus transpacificus in reaction to dramatic population decline over several decades. We took 526 sub-adult captive-reared delta smelt and cultured them for 200 days without providing artificial food or water quality management to assess their performance once released in the wild. The results indicated captive-reared sub-adult delta smelt could survive in a semi-natural environment with uncontrolled water quality and naturally produced wild prey through spawning and into their post spawning phase.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to describe the prey preference characteristics of cod larvae and assess preference variability in relation to species and size composition of copepod prey. A further aim is to examine the hypothesis that dietary prey size spectra remain the same during the larval stage when viewed on a relative predator/prey size scale. The study is based on stomach analysis of larval/juvenile cod in the size range 10–35 mm from nursery grounds in the North Sea. Stomach contents (species, size) were compared to environmental composition and preference indices were calculated. Prey size spectra had the expected relationship to larval cod size, and preference for given copepod species could be ascribed to their relative size. Additional species-specific preferences were evident, for example the larger Pseudocalanus and the larger Calanus spp. were highly preferred. Available prey biomass was highest in the areas of a hydrographic front, where larvae have been shown to concentrate. Changes in prey availability with larval growth depend strongly on specific prey biomass spectra at a given location. Both increasing and decreasing prey availability at increasing larval size were indicated, dependent on location. The findings illustrate the usefulness of coupling dietary prey size spectra and biomass spectra of available prey sizes during studies of ichthyoplankton feeding ecology.  相似文献

The rainbow smelt, Osmerus mordax (Mitchill), is an osmerid fish that exhibits extensive life-history diversity throughout watersheds of northeastern North America. There are both ???sea-run (anadromous) and lake-resident (lacustrine) populations and the latter have diversified further into “dwarf-” and “normal-sized” life-history types. Anadromous and lacustrine smelt may inhabit the same watershed and there are several instances where dwarf and normal populations reside within the same lake. We assayed variation among smelt for morphological traits linked to feeding performance in fishes to see if trophic ecology might promote life-history diversity in Osmerus. We also examined mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction site variation among forms to assess their evolutionary interrelationships. Dwarf smelt had significantly more gill rakers, larger eyes, but shorter upper jaws than normal lake and anadromous smelt. The populations clustered into two trophic “morphotypes”; an anadromous/normal lake group of populations and a group consisting only of dwarf smelt. The mtDNAs of 444 smelt from 16 populations were digested with 12 restriction enzymes revealing 93 composite mtDNA genotypes that clustered (UPGMA) into two major phylogenetic groups differing by 0.78% in sequence. Both genetic groups were present in dwarf and normal smelt as well as in anadromous fish. Further, geographic proximity, rather than trophic morphotype, appeared to be the major determinant of genetic affinities among populations. In two lakes, however, dwarf and normal smelt populations had significantly different mtDNA genotype frequency distributions indicating that the forms are reproductively isolated within both lakes. A clustering analysis of population affinities suggested that the divergence of sympatric dwarf and normal populations had occurred independently in the two lakes. We concluded (1) that trophic ecology is an important factor promoting differentiation in smelt life histories; (2) that smelt ecotypes are polyphyletic and there have been multiple, independent divergences of Osmerus life-history types throughout northeastern North America; and (3) that the biological and mtDNA differences between coexisting dwarf and normal lake smelt argue strongly that their genetic isolation may have developed sympatrically.  相似文献

Understanding how animals utilize available space is important for their conservation, as it provides insight into the ecological needs of the species, including those related to habitat, prey and inter and intraspecific interactions. We used 28 months of radio telemetry data and information from 200 kill locations to assess habitat selection at the 3rd order (selection of habitats within home ranges) and 4th order (selection of kill sites within the habitats used) of a reintroduced population of cheetahs Acinonyx jubatus in Phinda Private Game Reserve, South Africa. Along with landscape characteristics, we investigated if lion Panthera leo presence affected habitat selection of cheetahs. Our results indicated that cheetah habitat selection was driven by a trade-off between resource acquisition and lion avoidance, and the balance of this trade-off varied with scale: more open habitats with high prey densities were positively selected within home ranges, whereas more closed habitats with low prey densities were positively selected for kill sites. We also showed that habitat selection, feeding ecology, and avoidance of lions differed depending on the sex and reproductive status of cheetahs. The results highlight the importance of scale when investigating a species’ habitat selection. We conclude that the adaptability of cheetahs, together with the habitat heterogeneity found within Phinda, explained their success in this small fenced reserve. The results provide information for the conservation and management of this threatened species, especially with regards to reintroduction efforts in South Africa.  相似文献

The Magellan region is a unique peri-Antarctic ecosystem due to its geographical position. However, the knowledge about the distribution and feeding ecology of fish larvae is scarce. Since this area is characterized by low phytoplankton biomass, we hypothesize that marine fish larvae display different foraging tactics in order to reduce diet overlap. During austral spring 2009–2010, two oceanographic cruises were carried out along southern Patagonia (50–56°S). Larval fish distribution and feeding of the two most widely distributed species were studied, the smelt Bathylagichthys parini (Bathylagidae) and black southern cod Patagonotothen tessellata (Nototheniidae). Larvae of B. parini showed a lower increase in the mouth gape at size, primarily feeding during daytime (higher feeding incidence during the day) mostly on nonmotile prey (invertebrate and copepod eggs, appendicularian fecal pellets, diatoms). They showed no increase in feeding success (number, total volume of prey per gut and prey width) with increasing larval size, and the niche breadth was independent of larval size. Larvae of P. tessellata showed a large mouth gape at size, which may partially explain the predation on motile prey like large calanoid copepods (C. simillimus) and copepodites. They are nocturnal feeders (higher feeding incidence during night) and are exclusively carnivorous, feeding on larger prey as the larvae grow. Nonetheless, niche breadth was independent of larval size. Diet overlap was important only in individuals with smaller mouth gape (<890 μm) and diminished as larvae (and correspondingly their jaw) grow. In conclusion, in the peri-Antarctic Magellan region, fish larvae of two species display different foraging tactics, reducing their trophic overlap throughout their development.  相似文献

Synopsis Several native fish species in Lake Michigan became rare or locally extinct during the increase of rainbow smelt (1930s) and alewife (1950s–1960s). These particular native species have pelagic eggs or larvae which were large relative to the zooplankton and which co-occurred with feeding alewife, smelt or both. Alewife, smelt and most of the other planktivores in the lake probably consumed eggs, and at least alewife and smelt are known to consume larvae. For each species, I comment on the probable role of predation on early life history stages in their decline. Several species which currently co-exist with alewife and smelt have shown large scale declines during the increase of the exotics. Recruitment declines were often dramatic and the probability of predation on these species during their early life history is evaluated.  相似文献
