The communities of metazoan endoparasites of blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, in waters of north-west Spain were analysed and a geographical comparison made with other localities. Four hundred blue whiting collected in July 1999 and September 2000 were examined for parasites, excluding the head and gills. Six species were found: Anisakis simplex s.l. (L3), A. physeteris (L3), Hysterothylacium aduncum (L2 and L3), Stephanostomum lophii (metacercaria), S. pristis (adult), and Prosorhynchus crucibulum (metacercaria). The latter is a new host record, and A. physeteris is reported for the first time in blue whiting from the north-east Atlantic. Host gender was not a significant predictor of abundance of any helminth species, and host length was only weakly and positively related to the abundance of A. simplex. Infracommunities were species-poor, with 56% of fish harbouring only one parasite species, and 92% up to two species. Infracommunities were strongly dominated by A. simplex (389 fish) or S. lophii (6 fish). Fish length or gender, and the year of capture, did not affect species richness nor the degree of dominance. There were no significant pair-wise associations between species. Infracommunities were basically composed of several allogenic parasites with different life histories that converge in the blue whiting through the local food web. The parasite fauna of blue whiting in the study area was poor and distinctive compared with that of other localities in the north-east North Atlantic. These peculiarities might primarily be related to the composition of the local community of definitive hosts, although there might also be some influence of the geographical distribution of parasites.  相似文献

This study investigated the biogeography and genetic variation in the antitropically distributed Micromesistius genus. A 579 bp fragment of the mitochondrial coI gene was analysed in 279 individuals of Micromesistius poutassou and 163 of Micromesistius australis. The time since divergence was estimated to be c. 2 million years before present (Mb.p.) with an externally derived clock rate by Bayesian methods. Congruent estimates were obtained with an additional data set of cytochrome b sequences derived from GenBank utilizing a different clock rate. The divergence time of 2 Mb.p. was in disagreement with fossil findings in New Zealand and previous hypotheses which suggested the divergence to be much older. It, therefore, appears likely that Micromesistius has penetrated into the southern hemisphere at least two times. Paleoceanographic records indicate that conditions that would increase the likelihood for transequatorial dispersals were evident c. 2-1·6 Mb.p.. Haplotype frequency differences, along with pairwise F(ST) values, indicated that Mediterranean M. poutassou is a genetically isolated population.  相似文献

Blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou mean total length at age in the north‐east Atlantic Ocean was found to vary by around ±6% during the period 2004–2011 and mean mass at age by ±22% during the years 1981–2013. Linear modelling provided strong evidence that these phenotypic growth variations can be explained by trophic conditions, mainly negative density dependence and also food availability, and a negative long‐term temperature effect on asymptotic size.  相似文献

Pleistophora finisterrensis n. sp. is a microsporidian parasite of the hypoaxial musculature of the blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou (Risso). Foci of infection are between 3 and 6 mm in length and have no evident effects on adjacent muscle fibres. We found only a single type of spore (uninucleate, with mean dimensions of 4×2 µm in fresh preparations), contained within sporophorous vesicles (mean diameter 19 µm in fresh preparations; 150–250 spores per vesicle). All of the development stages of this microsporidian are monokaryotic. The meronts are initially uninucleate and bounded by a plasmalemma. Towards the end of merogony, meronts are multinucleate plasmodia with a well-defined surface coat. Sporogony is polysporous, with multinucleate sporonts, which likewise have a well-defined surface coat (about 130 nm thick), dividing by plasmotomy to give rise to uninucleate sporoblasts. The polar tube is isofilar and consists of 8–9 turns in the posterior half of spore. The polaroplast is made up of an anterior lamellar part and a posterior vesicular part.  相似文献

A total of 301 blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou Risso, 1826, ranging in length from 17 to 28 cm, from Motril Bay (Mediterranean coast, south Spain) were examined for anisakid nematodes, as these fish are common items in the Spanish Mediterranean diet. Three anisakid species were morphologically identified with a total prevalence of 10.63%. Anisakis simplex s.l. Rudolphi, 1809 had a prevalence value of 6.65%, compared with 2.66% for A. physeteris Baylis, 1923 and 2.33% for Hysterothylacium aduncum Rudolphi, 1802. Variations in prevalence values with season and host size are discussed. Allozyme markers (leucine aminopeptidase-1) were used to identify anisakid nematodes assigned to the A. simplex complex and all examined larvae were found to correspond genetically to A. pegreffii Nascetti et al., 1986.  相似文献

A combination of traditional and emerging methodologies was used to assess the trade-offs between several life-history traits (linked to reproduction and condition) and parasitism in a commercially-exploited cold-water species, blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou, in the Mediterranean Sea. The use of histological and gravimetric methods revealed conflicting evidence as to the fecundity type (indeterminate or determinate) of this species. Moreover, there seem to be condition-mediated compensations between egg quality and egg quantity. The effects of parasitism on reproduction and condition are species-specific and occur mainly at high intensities of infection; they include a lower batch fecundity (affecting reproductive potential), a higher hepatosomatic index and a higher spleen-somatic index. Considering the fact that larger fish spawn more eggs and that the minimum landing size is lower than the size at maturity, these results may have implications for the future management of M. poutassou stocks in the Mediterranean Sea. Local environmental conditions may account for geographical differences regarding infection in M. poutassou. Altogether, the results support the idea that the complex trade-offs between parasitism, reproduction and condition need to be considered in order to understand the status of cold-water species such as M. poutassou.  相似文献

This paper records the unusual occurrence of the blue whiting ( Micromesistius poutassou ) from inshore waters of the west coast of Scotland from 1971 to 1974. The fish were O and I-group and appeared to migrate into the area during the autumn and winter months. Data on growth, length for weight relationships and feeding are described.  相似文献

From the examination of samples of fish caught in two commercial surveys on trawling grounds around the Falkland Islands, it is noted that Patagonian hake, Merluccius hubbsi , southern blue whiting, Micromesistius australis , and others occurred in fishable quantities especially to the east of Beauchêne Islands where fishes were larger and more numerous. However 47% of the total catch consisted of southern blue whiting which was 100% infested by a myxosporidian parasite in its musculature rendering it unsuitable for human consumption.  相似文献

In April 1995 a patch of blue whiting larvae Micromesistius poutassou was found at low illumination levels below 20 m depth near Porcupine Bank, west of Ireland, together with high densities of copepod nauplii and reduced turbulence rates, suggesting that larval blue whiting vertical distribution was determined by prey concentration, illumination and turbulence. Most (83·8%) larvae (2·0–7·5 mm L s) had food in their guts. Feeding incidence and feeding intensities increased with increasing larval length. Only larvae >5·5 mm reduced numerical in favour of weight-based feeding intensity, indicating a shift in dietary composition. Maxima of the diel rhythms of feeding incidence and intensities occurred at 1800 and 2100 hours and minima at dawn (0600 hours). Proportionately, more nauplii were eaten by day but more copepod eggs and tintinnids at night. The distinct diel pattern in larval blue whiting feeding suggests that any analysis of factors mediating feeding must take into account diel feeding cycles. Larval feeding was significantly affected by wind speed. The larvae ate more and larger items at low than at higher turbulence levels. The data suggest that the maximum level of turbulence was not beneficial for larval blue whiting, but more moderate wind speeds could have had an enhancing effect on larval feeding success.  相似文献

Diet breadth (measured as the S.D. of the log of prey size per larvae; SLH) of blue whiting micromesistius poutassou larvae followed a quadratic equation with larval size. In small larvae, diet breadth in terms of size (SLH), the mean and the maximum of the log of prey size per larvae (MLH and XLH, respectively) increased with larval size as prey size selection shifted to larger prey. In contrast, large larvae tended to reduce diet breadth of prey sizes ingested, focusing on the larger prey that were abundant, instead of raising the upper limit of prey sizes because of the low abundance of larger prey. Except for larvae at the onset of first feeding, number of prey stayed constant or decreased in relation to larval size. Both patterns (in small and large larvae) maintained a constant rate of increase of gut carbon content with increase in larval size. Large larvae appear to maintain the increase in gut carbon content during ontogenetic development by reducing diet breadth (SLH) and increasing selection towards the larger prey that are abundant.  相似文献

Fish larvae employ different feeding strategies depending on area and season of spawning and hatching of larvae. Feeding and growth of larvae of blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou and mackerel Scomber scombrus from Porcupine Bank and the Celtic Shelf Break, west of Ireland, were compared based on prey concentrations in the environment and larval feeding behaviour. Both species were adapted to different environmental conditions. The mesopelagic blue whiting spawned in oceanic water that was well mixed. It was characterized by low production and low prey densities with minimum prey densities <1.0 organism 1−1. Larvae of the Atlantic mackerel hatched later in the season in more productive water that was well stratified. Prey densities in the mackerel environment reached up to 1001−1. Blue whiting larvae displayed a rather random distribution in the water column. Mackerel larvae <7 mm standard length ( L s) were concentrated above the thermocline, while larvae >7 mm traversed the thermocline into deeper layers. Mackerel larvae >5mm L s displayed marked cannibalism, exceeding 70%. Daily ration calculated on the basis of gut contents was rather low in both species: between 2.6 and 5.0% in blue whiting, but only 0.6 to 5.4% in mackerel. The results are discussed in relation to the respective environment both species encounter during their early larval life.  相似文献

The population of solenette, Buglossidium luteum , in the Solway Firth was studied from November 1977 until January 1979. The fish live in mobile, highly aggregated groupings, on sandy bottoms, in the outer Firth. A general offshore movement occurs in winter with a limited incursion of juveniles into the inner Solway in summer. Most growth occurs in the first few years of life and a length of 130 mm is attained. Longevity is 10 years. Females grow larger than males, but both sexes mature in their third year. Spawning starts in March/April, is most active in May/June and ends in August. Food intake is markedly reduced in winter. Small Crustacea, bivalve molluscs and polychaete worms form year-round components of a varied diet. Juvenile forms, especially shrimp and fish are readily taken when available.  相似文献

The diet of blue whiting, hake, horse mackerel and mackerel off Portugal   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This paper deals with the diets of blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou (Risso 1810), hake Merluccius merluccius (L. 1758), horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus (L. 1758), and mackerel Scomber scombrus (L. 1758) off Portugal and explores variations in fish length, water depth, latitude and season. All four species feed on fish; however, hake and mackerel are the first and second most important predators, respectively, blue whiting being the most important fish prey for both species. The diets of blue whiting and horse mackerel are composed mainly of crustaceans. Diet variations according to predator fish size are more important than either latitude or depth. In the diets of blue whiting, hake and horse mackerel, prey importance increases with predator size. For blue whiting and horse mackerel, diet variations with fish length and water depth are correlated: small fish are closely associated with coastal areas where they feed on copepods and decapod larvae. Seasonality in the diet is apparent for blue whiting, hake and mackerel. For blue whiting, the decapod Pasiphaea sivado is the most important prey in summer and autumn, being replaced by the euphausid Meganyctiphanes norvegica in winter. In the diet of hake, seasonality was characterised by the major importance of Macroramphosus scolopax in autumn, whereas the diet of mackerel consisted of zooplankton in summer, fish and decapods in autumn and decapod larvae in winter. Seasonal changes in the diet of horse mackerel correspond to a higher diversity of prey in autumn compared to other seasons (although euphausids are the main prey in all seasons). Seasonality in feeding activity is not as marked for the other species as it is for horse mackerel; the percentage of empty stomachs of horse mackerel is greatest in winter, when spawning takes place at the Portuguese coast.  相似文献

Age and growth of the hollowsnout grenadier was studied based on samples collected seasonally in the Agean Sea between March 2003 and January 2004. Total length ranged from 9.0 to 21.6 cm. Length–weight relationship was described as a = 0.0032, and b = 3.008. Age determinations based on otolith readings were between 1 and 10 years. The von Bertalanffy growth curve fitted to observed lengths‐at‐age provided parameters of L = 24.9 cm, k = 0.115 and to = ?3.494.  相似文献

Cyanogenesis is a widespread chemical defence mechanism in plants against herbivory. However, some specialised herbivores overcome this protection by different behavioural or metabolic mechanisms. In the present study, we investigated the effect of presence or absence of cyanogenic glycosides in birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus, Fabaceae) on oviposition behaviour, larval preference, larval development, adult weight and nectar preference of the common blue butterfly (Polyommatus icarus, Lycaenidae). For oviposition behaviour there was a female-specific reaction to cyanogenic glycoside content; i.e. some females preferred to oviposit on cyanogenic over acyanogenic plants, while other females behaved in the opposite way. Freshly hatched larvae did not discriminate between the two plant morphs. Since the two plant morphs differed not only in their content of cyanogenic glycoside, but also in N and water content, we expected these differences to affect larval growth. Contrary to our expectations, larvae feeding on cyanogenic plants showed a faster development and stronger weight gain than larvae feeding on acyanogenic plants. Furthermore, female genotype affected development time, larval and pupal weight of the common blue butterfly. However, most effects detected in the larval phase disappeared for adult weight, indicating compensatory feeding of larvae. Adult butterflies reared on the two cyanogenic glycoside plant morphs did not differ in their nectar preference. But a gender-specific effect was found, where females preferred amino acid-rich nectar while males did not discriminate between the two nectar mimics. The presented results indicate that larvae of the common blue butterfly can metabolise the surplus of N in cyanogenic plants for growth. Additionally, the female-specific behaviour to oviposit preferably on cyanogenic or acyanogenic plant morphs and the female-genotype-specific responses in life history traits indicate the genetic flexibility of this butterfly species and its potential for local adaptation.  相似文献
