The water relations responses to salt of several important citrus rootstocks such as Swingle citrumelo, sour orange, and Milam lemon have not been studied in detail before. Studies were set up to compare growth and root hydraulic properties of these rootstocks to other citrus rootstocks by exposing them to NaCl and polyethylene glycol (PEG) stresses. Seedlings of 7 citrus rootstocks were irrigated for 5 months with nutrient solutions containing NaCl or PEG that had been adjusted to osmotic potentials of -0.10, -0.20 or -0.35 MPa. The 7 rootstocks studied were sour orange (Citrus aurantium), Cleopatra mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco), Swingle citrumelo (C. paradisi x P. trifoliata), Carrizo citrange (C. sinensis x P. trifoliata), rough lemon (Citrus jambhiri Lush), Milam lemon (C. jambhiri hybrid), and trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata [L.] Raf.). In both shoot and root growth, Cleopatra mandarin and sour orange were the least sensitive to salt, Milam and trifoliate orange were the most sensitive, and rough lemon, Swingle, and Carrizo were intermediate in sensitivity. Even though the roots were exposed to solutions of equal osmotic potentials, plant growth and root conductivity were reduced more by the PEG treatments than the corresponding NaCl treatments. At -0.10 and -0.20 MPa, shoot and root dry weights were reduced 16 to 55% by NaCl and 24 to 68% by PEG. Shoot root ratio was lowered at the higher concentrations, particularly by PEG. There was a major decrease in root conductivity caused by NaCl at -0.10 MPa (19 to 30% in sour orange and Cleopatra mandarin and 78 to 85% in trifoliate orange and Milam). Conductivity decreased more at -0.20 and -0.35 MPa, but not proportionally as much as at -0.10 MPa. Root weight per unit length increased at the higher salt levels, particularly in trifoliate orange. Water flow rate through root systems followed the same trend as root conductivity; salt affected sour orange and Cleopatra mandarin the least and trifoliate orange and Milam the most. However, reductions in fibrous root length by salt treatment differed. Root lengths of Swingle and Carrizo were least affected by salt while sour orange. Milam, and rough lemon were the most affected. Hence, even though sour orange and Cleopatra mandarin were more tolerant than the other rootstocks in terms of water flow rate or root conductivity, these 2 rootstocks showed a proportionally greater decrease in root length than Carrizo, Swingle, or trifoliate orange.  相似文献

We describe the responses of three halophytic grass species that dominate the low (Spartina anglica), middle (Puccinellia maritima) and high (Elymus pycnanthus) parts of a salt marsh, to soil conditions that are believed to favour contrasting root-growth strategies. Our hypotheses were: (1) individual lateral root length is enhanced by N limitations in the soil but restricted by oxygen limitations, (2) the density of root branching within a species is inversely related to the length of the lateral roots, and (3) species from high elevations (i.e. the driest parts of a marsh) are the most responsive to changing soil conditions. Plant growth responses and soil parameters showed that the contrasting but uniformly applied soil treatments were effective. All three species showed a small but significant shift towards a finer root diameter distribution when N was limiting, partly because of the finer diameters of the laterals (Elymus and Spartina) and partly because of increased length of individual 1st-order laterals (Elymus and Puccinellia). The increased length of the 1st-order laterals of Elymus and Puccinellia grown under low N indicates that the first part of hypothesis 1 may be true. However, lack of effect of flooding and reduced soil conditions lead us to reject the second part of hypothesis 1. Hypothesis 2 was rejected for these three halophytes, as the branch density of 1st- and 2nd-order laterals appears to be controlled by other factors than length of individual laterals. Hypothesis 3 may be true for specific root characteristics (e.g. length of individual 1st-order laterals), but cannot be generalised (e.g. branch density and topological index). In conclusion, the present data on root growth in contrasting but homogeneous soil conditions indicate that morphological responsiveness of the root systems of these halophytic grass species is limited, regardless of their location along the elevational gradient.  相似文献

The amount of root mortality caused by root pathogens such as Phytophthora nicotianae (syn. Phytophthora parasitica) has typically been inferred from the net change in root length density in sequential soil cores. Because such measurements give information only on net changes in root populations, the actual rate of root turnover is often underestimated. We used minirhizotrons to track the fate of a large number of individual fine roots of mature field-grown citrus trees over a 6-month period. This method enabled us to examine the effect of P. nicotianae population levels on fine-root mortality. Seasonal and genotypic variation in patterns of citrus fine root mortality were associated with variation in population levels of P. nicotianae. Fine root lifespans were shorter when populations of P. nicotianae were high. Fine roots of the Phytophthora-susceptible rootstock, rough lemon (Citrus jamibhiri), had shorter median lifespans and supported larger populations of P. nicotianae than the fine roots of the more tolerant rootstock, Volkamer lemon (Citrus volkameriana). Rates of root mortality were either relatively constant for roots of all ages, or increased with age; the latter pattern was most pronounced for Volkamer lemon roots. Differences in the age-dependence of root mortality may, therefore, play a role in genotypic differences in tolerance of Phytophthora root rot by these two rootstocks. Photosynthetic responses of citrus trees to soil flooding   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Continuous soil flooding reduced leaf photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance to water vapor, chlorophyll concentration and activity of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco, EC 4.1.1.39) of sweet orange [ Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck cv. Hamlin] trees, grafted onto rough lemon (RL; C. jambhiri Lush.) and sour orange (SO; C. aurantium L.) rootstocks. After 24 days of waterlogging, trees showed senescence, wilting and abscission of leaves, and these symptoms were more evident with flooded Hamlin/SO than Hamlin/RL. Reduction of leaf photosynthetic rate at day 24 was ca 94%, of stomatal conductance, 71%, of chlorophyll, 38% and of Rubisco, 62% for flooded Hamlin/SO, compared with 22, 5, 18 and 33%, respectively, for flooded Hamlin/RL. For both Hamlin/RL and Hamlin/SO, leaf photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance to water vapor were closely correlated (r2= 0.87). Leaf internal CO2 concentration of flooded trees, however, was not decreased by reduced stomatal conductance. Dark respiration rates of fibrous roots of flooded trees were greatly reduced, but not in leaf tissues. Total nonstructural carbohydrate concentrations were higher in leaves (50 and 80% increases for Hamlin/SO and Hamlin/RL, respectively), but drastically reduced in roots (60 and 45% reductions for Hamlin/SO and Hamlin/RL, respectively), as a result of flooding. The data indicate that Hamlin grafted onto RL rootstocks was more tolerant to soil flooding than Hamlin grafted onto SO rootstocks.  相似文献

Root morpho-topology and net nitrate uptake of two citrus seedlings, Volkamer Lemon and Carrizo Citrange, grown at two nitrogen supplies (NO3-N 5 M and 1000 M, respectively) were studied. Root morphological and topological parameters were gauged by an image-specific analysis system (WinRHIZO). Net nitrate uptake was estimated using the nitrate depletion method. The main findings showed that Carrizo seedlings had a dichotomous branching root system characterized by high root tip numbers and long 2nd order lateral roots. Conversely, Volkamer root systems had a herringbone structure with a long tap root and 1st order lateral root. Nitrate treatment did not seem to affect the pattern of the two genotypes, except for the 2nd order lateral roots (Carrizo more than Volkamer) and root/shoot ratio and root mass ratio (Volkamer more than Carrizo) that were significantly different at low nitrate supply. Nitrate treatments induced a diverse net nitrate uptake regulation between citrus rootstocks. Indeed, at low nitrate supply, Carrizo showed a more efficient nitrate acquisition process in terms of: 1) higher net nitrate uptake maximum of the inducible high affinity transport system or full induction (A), (2) higher cumulative nitrate uptake (At) and (3) lower t1 parameter defined as the half time of the net nitrate uptake rate of the inducible transport system during the induction phase, compared to Volkamer. Conversely, at the high nitrate level, only the genotypical difference of the t1 parameter was maintained. The results suggested that, at the low nitrate level, the morphological root traits such as higher 2nd order lateral roots and greater root tip numbers of the Carrizo compared with Volkamer seedlings, enhance the capacity to absorb nitrate from nutrient solution.  相似文献

Drought and fire are prevalent disturbances in Mediterranean ecosystems. Plant species able to regrow after severe disturbances (i.e. resprouter life history) have higher allocation to roots and higher water potential during the dry season than coexisting non-resprouting species. However, seedlings of non-resprouters have a higher survival rate after summer drought. We predict that, to counteract their shallow-rooting systems and to maximize seedling survival, non-resprouters have root traits that confer higher efficiency in soil resource acquisition than resprouters. We tested this prediction in seedlings of less than 1.5 months old. We select 13 coexisting woody species (including both resprouters and non-resprouters), grew them in a common garden and measured the following root traits: length, surface, average diameter, root tissue density (RTD), specific root length (SRL), surface:volume ratio (SVR), specific tip density (STD), tip distribution in depth, internal links ratio (ILR), and degree of branching. These root traits were compared between the two resprouting life histories using both standard cross-species and phylogenetic-informed analysis. Non-resprouters showed higher SRL and longer, thinner and more branched laterals, especially in the upper soil layers. The external links (i.e. the most absorptive root region) were also more abundant, longer, thinner and with higher SVR for non-resprouters. The results were supported by the phylogenetic-informed analysis for the root traits most strongly related to soil resource acquisition (SRL, SVR and branching pattern). The seedling root structure of non-resprouters species allows them to more efficiently explore the upper soil layer, whereas seedling roots of resprouters will permit both carbon storage and deep soil penetration.  相似文献

Six-months-old, uniform sized seedlings of two citrus rootstocks; Cleopatra mandarin (Citrus reshni Hort. ex Tan) and Troyer citrange (Poncirus trifoliata × Citrus sinensis) were irrigated with half-strength Hoagland nutrient solution containing 0, 40 or 80 mM NaCl for 12 weeks. Shoot height, leaf number and fresh weights of the seedlings, and relative chlorophyll contents, chlorophyll fluorescence yields (Fv/Fm), net photosynthetic and respiration rates in the leaves decreased with the increase in salinity level in the irrigation water. The decrease was greater in Troyer citrange as compared to Cleopatra mandarin. The concentrations of sugars i.e. fructose, glucose and sucrose in the leaves of Cleopatra mandarin and both leaves and roots of Troyer citrange decreased with the increase in salinity level. However, the concentrations in the roots of Cleopatra mandarin increased with the increase in salinity level. Free proline content in the leaves of Troyer citrange and root tissue of Cleopatra mandarin also increased with the increased salinity level. Among the polyamines, spermine titer increased in the leaves of both rootstocks as a response to salinity treatments. Na+ concentrations were higher in leaf and root tissue of Cleopatra mandarin, while that of Cl were higher in Troyer citrange.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the extent in which leaf and whole plant transpiration (Tp) were influenced by root hydraulic conductance (Kr), leaf to root ratio and leaf mass. Also, the relationships between the anatomic characteristics of roots and Kr were investigated. To this end, 9‐month‐old seedlings of the citrus rootstocks Cleopatra mandarin (CM), Poncirus trifoliata (PT), and their hybrids Forner‐Alcaide no 5 (FA‐5) and Forner‐Alcaide no 13 (FA‐13) and 15‐month‐old trees of Valencia orange budded on these four rootstocks were tested. The hybrid FA‐13 and PT had higher values of Kr and leaf transpiration rates (E) than FA‐5 and CM. There was a positive curvilinear correlation between E and Kr. Furthermore, E levels in the different types of plants decreased with increased leaf/root (L/R) ratios. Pruning of the roots and defoliation confirmed that transpiration rates were strongly influenced by the L/R ratio. However, variations in E because of differences in L/R ratios were less pronounced in trees budded on FA‐13 and PT than on the other two rootstocks. In addition, there was a positive correlation between Tp and leaf biomass, although differences between rootstocks may be attributed to differences in Kr. The average lumen diameter of xylem vessels was greater in rootstocks with high Kr. Size of epidermal and hypodermal cells of fibrous roots may also restrict Kr.  相似文献

We studied the response of maize (Zea mays L. cv. Anjou 256)to a simultaneous, but separated supply of ammonium and nitrate(localized supply, LS). A split-root system was used to supplyhalf of the roots with ammonium and the other half with nitrate.A homogeneously distributed supply of both nitrogen forms (HS)was the control treatment. Seedlings were grown for 12 d fromthe two-leaf to the three-leaf stage in hydroponics at threepH levels (4, 5·5 and 7). The total N concentration was3 mol m-3. The split-root system was established by removingthe seminal root system and using only four nodal roots perplant. Total root length and root surface area were recordedautomatically with a modified Delta- T area meter. Other morphologicalroot traits (such as main axis length and diameter, number, density, and length of laterals) were recorded manually. Uptakeof ammonium and nitrate was measured by the depletion of thenutrient solution. As compared with LS, HS was superior in shootand root DM, total root length and root surface area, ammoniumand nitrate uptake and shoot nitrogen concentration, irrespectiveof pH level. This indicates that, also under field conditions, mixed ammonium and nitrate fertilization is only beneficialto plant growth if both N forms are evenly distributed in thesoil. At both HS and LS, ascending pH increased the ammonium:nitrateuptake ratio. At LS, declining pH induced a considerable shiftin the distribution of root DM, root length, and root surfacearea the nitrate-fed compartment.Copyright 1993, 1999 AcademicPress Maize, Zea may L., ammonium, nitrate, pH, root morphology, split-root  相似文献

Both water level and nutrient availability are important factors influencing the growth of wetland plants. Increased nutrient supply might counteract the negative effects of flooding on the growth of the fast-growing species. Experimental evidence is scarce and the mechanism is far from clear. The aim of this study is to identify the role of nutrient availability in acclimation to high-water level by investigating the growth and root morphology of the marsh plant Deyeuxia angustifolia, one of the dominant species in the Sanjiang Plain, China. Experimental treatments included two water levels (0 and 10 cm, relative to soil surface) and three levels of nutrient supply (0, 0.5 and 1 g fertilizer per container). High-water level usually led to decreased biomass accumulation, shoot mass and root mass, whereas biomass accumulation was unaffected by water level at the highest nutrient level, indicating that high-nutrient availability played a role in compensating for the growth loss induced by the high-water level. Increased nutrient supply led to decreased root length in 0 cm water-level treatments, but root length increased with nutrient supply in the 10 cm water-level treatments. High-water level usually led to a lower lateral root density, lateral root:main root length ratio and the diameter of main roots and laterals, whereas increased nutrient supply resulted in thicker main roots or laterals, and a higher total root length, lateral root density and lateral root:main root length ratio. These data indicate that the growth of D. angustifolia is restrained by high-water level, and that increased nutrient supply not only ameliorates root characteristics to acclimate to high-water level but also results in a high-total root length to facilitate nutrient acquisition.  相似文献

Effects of localized phosphate supply on the seedling growth of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes 81(85)5-3-3-3 (P-efficient) and NC37 (P-inefficient) were studied using a device which allowed only 3 cm length of root segment to be exposed to phosphate treatment. Localized supply of 0 mmol P L–1 and the rest of root supplied with 0.1 mmol P L–1 (HLH), increased the shoot height, leaf area, root/shoot ratio for 81(85)5-3-3-3, length of root and root axis for NC37, and root axis length and density of first-laterals for both the genotypes, compared to plants with the whole root system in P-sufficient solution (HHH). This suggested that above- and below-ground morphological parameters of wheat were promoted by a localized P-deficiency, presumably via a P deficiency signal. There was a significant difference in the number of first-order laterals between the two wheat genotypes when most of the roots were grown without P and only 3 cm length of root was supplied with 0.3 mmol P L–1. The relationship between the number and density of 2nd-order lateral roots and level of local P supply was quadratic. Maximum number and density of 2nd-order lateral roots were obtained with a localized P supply of 0.70 mmol L–1.  相似文献

Quantifying patterns of variation and coordination of plant functional traits can help to understand the mechanisms underlying both invasiveness and adaptation of plants. Little is known about the coordinated variations of performance and functional traits of different organs in invasive plants, especially in response to their adaptation to environmental stressors. To identify the responses of the invasive species Solidago canadensis to drought, 180 individuals were randomly collected from 15 populations and 212 ramets were replanted in a greenhouse to investigate both the response and coordination between root and leaf functional traits. Drought significantly decreased plant growth and most of the root and leaf functional traits, that is, root length, surface area, volume and leaf size, number, and mass fraction, except for the root length ratio and root mass fraction. Phenotypic plasticity was higher in root traits than in leaf traits in response to drought, and populations did not differ significantly. The plasticity of most root functional traits, that is, root length (RL), root surface area (RSA), root volume (RV), and root mass fraction (RMF), were significantly positively correlated with biomass between control and drought. However, the opposite was found for leaf functional traits, that is, specific leaf area (SLA), leaf area ratio (LAR), and leaf mass fraction (LMF). Drought enhanced the relationship between root and leaf, that is, 26 pairwise root–leaf traits were significantly correlated under drought, while only 15 pairwise root–leaf traits were significantly correlated under control conditions. Significant correlations were found between biomass and all measured functional traits except for leaf size. RV, root length ratio, RMF, total area of leaves, and LMF responded differently to water availability. These responses enable S. canadensis to cope with drought conditions and may help to explain the reason of the vast ecological amplitude of this species.  相似文献

Citrus rootstocks which significantly limited the reproduction of Tylenchulus semipenetrans (Cobb) "Citrus" and "Poncirus" biotypes responded to infection by producing a hypersensitive-type response in the root hypodermis, wound periderm and/or cavities in the root cortex, and/or abnormal vacuoles in nurse cell cytoplasm. Rootstocks which limited nematode reproduction also had significantly fewer nematodes in the rhizoplane within 8 d of inoculation than did rootstocks which did not limit reproduction. Germplasm sources of the cellular responses which limited citrus nematode reproduction were identified.  相似文献

The anchorage of deep rooted 16-year-old larch trees, Larixeuropea japonica, has been studied by combining winching testswith analyses of strain around the base of the trunk and rootsystem and mechanical tests on individual roots. These showedthat anchorage is provided by the laterals which emerge fromaround the stem base, sinker roots which emerge along theirlength, and tap roots positioned directly underneath the bole.During anchorage failure the leeward laterals are bent and eventuallybreak close to their base, whilst the windward laterals arepulled out of the ground, with their sinker roots intact. Afterinitially being confined by the soil and bending, the tap rootrotates in the soil. Anchorage failure is similar when the soilis dry as when it is wet, but failure occurs closer to the trunk.Strain measurements along the lateral roots revealed that thestresses were highest close to the trunk and that these regionsof the roots contribute most to tree stability. The two major components of anchorage were found to be the resistanceof leeward laterals to bending and the resistance of tap rootsand windward sinkers to uprooting. Bending tests on leewardlaterals revealed that they provide around 25% of tree anchorage.Almost 75% of the anchorage strength must, therefore, be providedby the windward sinkers and tap roots. Anchorage strength ofroots was positively correlated to their cross-sectional area. The vertical orientation of the sinkers makes the anchoragesystem of larch more efficient than the plate system formedby Sitka spruce on waterlogged soils and means that no root-soilplate is formed. Plant root hairs are believed to be very important for phosphorus (P) uptake from the soil by expanding the absorptive surface area of the root and increasing the soil volume explored by the roots, but genetic information about root hair traits in soybean is relatively scarce. In the present study, two contrasting genotypes of soybean (Glycine max and Glycine soja), CN4 and XM6, and their 88 F9-derived recombinant inbred lines (RILs) were grown in a field with moderately low P availability. Some important root hair traits, including root hair density (RHD), average root hair length (ARHL), and root hair length per unit root (RHLUR) were investigated and quantified with an automatic image analysis system and the genetic variability for these root hair traits was estimated with the RIL population. The results indicated that the two parental genotypes differed significantly in the three root hair traits measured, with XM6 generally having larger RHD and RHLUR (but smaller ARHL) than CN4, which may in part explain the difference in biomass and P status between the two parents. All the three root hair traits were continually segregated in the progenial RIL population with a normal distribution of the phenotypic values, indicating that these traits are possibly controlled by quantitative trait loci (QTLs). Analysis of variance for the RIL population showed that RHD had a low heritability (h2 b = 27.32, 31.04, 33.97% for basal roots, tap roots, total roots, respectively), while ARHL had a relatively higher genetic variance and hence a higher heritability (h2 b = 53.85, 59.18, 60.98% for basal roots, tap roots, total roots, respectively), suggesting that RHD is influenced more by environmental factors than ARHL. Both RHD and ARHL were positively correlated with RHLUR, indicating that the former two traits may be the attributes to the latter. On the other hand, RHD and ARHL were negatively correlated with each other, implying a possible complementary relationship between the two traits. Both RHD and RHLUR (but not ARHL) were positively correlated with P concentration in the plant, suggesting an important role of root hairs in P status. The basal roots had denser and higher total root hair length than the tap roots, and this is in accordance with previous observations with other plants that basal roots are more effective for P uptake than tap roots in cultivated soils.  相似文献

Summary Citrus somatic hybridization and cybridization via protoplast fusion has become an integral part of citrus variety improvement programs worldwide. Citrus somatic hybrid plants have been regenerated from more than 200 parental combinations, and several cybrid combinations have also been produced. Applications of somatic hybridization to citrus scion improvement include the production of quality tetraploid breeding parents that can be used in interploid crosses to generate seedless triploids, and the direct production of triploids by haploid + diploid fusion. Applications of somatic hybridization to citrus rootstock improvement include the production of allotetraploid hybrids that combine complementary diploid rootstocks, and to combine citrus with sexually incompatible or difficult to hybridize genera that possess traits of interest for germplasm expansion. A few somatic hybrid tetraploid breeding parents have flowered, are fertile, and are being used as pollen parents to generate triploids. Several allotetraploid somatic hybrid rootstocks are performing well in commercial field trials, and show great promise for tree size control. Seed trees of most of these somatic hybrid rootstocks are producing adequate nucellar seed for standard propagation. Somatic hybridization is expected to have a positive impact on citrus cultivar improvement efforts.  相似文献

Four-year-old citrus trees ( Citrus unshiu Marcovitch) were fed via the roots with (15NH4)2sO4 or K15NO3 as a nitrogen source. Nitrogenous compounds and their isotopic abundances in fine roots and xylem sap from trunks were assayed in order to obtain information on the species of nitrogen released by the root system into the ascending xyiem stream.
Arginine, asparagine, nitrate and proline in xylem sap accounted for 48, 21, 13 and 10%, respectively, of the total nitrogenous constituents tested in the sap. However, in the trees fed with labelled ammonium the main nitrogenous compound labelled with 15N in the xylem sap was asparagine and glutamine, which accounted for 79% and 18%, respectively, of total labelled nitrogen. In the xylem sap of trees fed with labelled nitrate, nitrate accounted for 94% of total labelled nitrogen. Nitrate and asparagine followed by glutamine showed the highest ratios of isotopic abundance in xylem sap as compared to fine roots. Proline and arginine had much lower ratios. These results indicate that nitrate, asparagine and glutamine are the main nitrogenous compounds released by the roots to the xylem stream, whereas arginine and proline are released into the xylern vessels by the trunk tissues. Furthermore, nitrate and asparagine are probably in steady movement upward in the trunk xylem, whereas glutamine is more easily taken up by the trunk tissues than nitrate and asparagine.  相似文献

Background and aims

Water availability is often one of the most limiting factors for plants. Climate change predictions for many areas suggest an intensification of water limitation. The ability of a plant to modify its root characteristics can be an important mechanism for preventing drought stress.

Methods

We studied the drought response of seedlings of 10 woody species and compared the biomass allocation, vertical root distribution across different root diameters, and the key traits of very fine roots (root diameter <0.5 mm) under two water regimes (no water limitation and severe drought).

Results

Under drought conditions, the very fine roots had a higher specific root length (SRL, root length: biomass ratio), smaller root diameter and higher root tissue mass density, as well as a lower nitrogen concentration. A higher value of the mean root plasticity index was related to higher drought resistance. A quantitative literature review showed that there was a wide variation in the effect of the drought on SRL, thus there was not a clear effect of drought on SRL.

Conclusions

Certain species have the necessary root traits and plasticity to survive drought. We have identified plasticity in root characteristics as a whole-plant trait which plays a significant role in separating out species into those which are vulnerable and those which are resistant to drought.  相似文献

Previously, we reported that in Citrus plants, nitrate influx through the plasmalemma of roots cells follows a biphasic pattern, suggesting the existence of at least two different uptake systems, a high and low affinity transport system (HATS and LATS, respectively). Here, we describe a novel inducible high affinity transport system (iHATS). This new nitrate transport system has a high capacity to uptake nitrate in two different Citrus rootstocks (Cleopatra mandarin and Troyer citrange). The iHATS was saturable, showing higher affinity than constitutive high affinity transport system (cHATS) to the substrate NO3. The Vmax for this saturable component iHATS was higher than cHATS, reaching similar values in both rootstocks.Additionally, we studied the regulation of root NO3 uptake mediated by both HATS (iHATS and cHATS) and LATS. In both rootstocks, cHATS is constitutive and independent of N-status. Concerning the regulation of iHATS, this system is upregulated by NO3 and down-regulated by the N status and by NO3 itself when plants are exposed to it for a longer period of time. LATS in Cleopatra mandarin and Troyer citrange rootstocks is repressed by the N-status.The use of various metabolic uncouplers or inhibitors indicated that NO3 net uptake mediated by iHATS and LATS was an active transport system in both rootstocks.Key Words: Citrus, inducible high affinity transport system (iHATS), constitutive high affinity transport system (cHATS), nitrate uptake, regulation  相似文献
