The performance ofNodularia harveyana, a N2-fixing cyanobacterium isolated from seawater, has been studied outdoors in two different culture systems: open pond (OP) and tubular photobioreactor (TPR). The productivity in both devices was influenced by areal density. The maximum yield obtained was 12.0 g (d.wt) m–2 day–1 in OP and 14.0 g (d.wt) m–2 day–1 in TPR in August, corresponding to the highest solar radiation received. In a month-long experiment with the cyanobacterium cultivated in TPR at high circulation speed, a net increase in productivity was obtained over that at low circulation speed. The influence of temperature on the productivity of the cultures grown in open ponds and tubular photobioreactors has been investigated. The higher productivity obtained in TPR compared to OP was attributed to its better controlled temperature conditions. In outdoor culture the maximum nitrogenase activity did not coincide with the maximum light intensity, but occurred in early afternoon. The amount of carbohydrate accumulated during the day probably influenced the rate of dark nitrogenase activity and its duration in the night. 相似文献

Three water bloom samples were collected in August 1986 from the southern Baltic Sea. Acute toxicity of the samples was determined by mouse bioassay and the toxins were further studied by HPLC. The bloom samples contained equal amounts of cyanobacteria Nodularia spumigena and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and were hepatotoxic. Two hepatotoxic Nodularia spumigena strains were isolated from the samples. The isolates produce a toxic peak indistinguishable from the bloom material in the HPLC analysis. The toxicity of the fractions was verified by mouse bioassay. Thus the toxicity of the bloom samples was in all likelihood caused by Nodularia spumigena. 相似文献

The crude methanolic extract and subsequent fractions of Teucrium royleanum (Labiatea) were screened for antibacterial and antifungal activities. Against tested pathogens, crude extract and subsequent fractions demonstrated moderate to excellent antibacterial activities. Highest antibacterial activity was displayed by the ethyl acetate fraction against S. typhi (100%), against E.coli (76.7%) and against P. aerugenosa (70.8%) followed by the chloroform fraction against S. typhi (85.7%). Similarly, the crude extract and its subsequent fractions showed mild to excellent activities in the antifungal bioassay with maximum antifungal activity against M. canis (87%) by the chloroform fraction followed by the ethyl acetate (71%) and n-butanol (70%) fractions. 相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the influence of total dissolvedsolids/salinity (mg L-1 TDS) on photosynthetic activity of Nodularia spumigena strain 001E isolated from Lake Alexandrina, SouthAustralia, using photosynthesis-irradiance (PI) curves. N. spumigena001E cultures were grown in ASM medium at a range of TDSconcentrations (360, 6,600, 13,200, 19,800, 26,400 mg L-1)at an irradiance of 30 mol m-2 s-1 (PAR, 400–700 nm) at 25 °C. The PI relationship was determined at 25 °Cfor irradiances between 0 and 500 mol photon m-2s-1 (PAR). The initial slope of PI curve, , a function of lightharvesting efficiency and photosynthetic energy conversion, decreasedproportionally with an increase in salinity from 360 to 26,400 mgL-1 TDS. The maximum rate of photosynthesis (Pmax),occurred at 6,600 mg L-1 TDS. No influence of salinity onIk, the irradiance at which Pmax was measured, or on Rd, the dark respiration rate, was identified. 相似文献

An acetone extract of Nodularia harveyana wasshown to be toxic to the free-living nematode Cephaloboides oxycerca. This antagonistic effect wastested in pot culture trials with lyophilized biomasson gall induction by the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita, using different methods ofapplication of the cyanobacterial biomass to thetomato plants. The trials revealed a possibleutilization of biomass of this cyanobacterium as aprotection agent against this phytoparasite. 相似文献

The allelopathic effects of vegetative and flowering plants of the annual/biennial pasture weed Senecio jacobaea L. (ragwort) against Lolium perenne L. (perennial ryegrass) and four pasture legumes were investigated using a range of bioassays. Bioassays based on shoot and
root leachates demonstrated detectable, although usually slight, allelopathic effects, and these did not usually differ between
the two developmental stages of S. jacobaea. However, aqueous extract and tissue decomposition bioassays demonstrated stronger allelopathic effects, particularly for
flowering plants, and this was in general agreement with toxicity assessments of soil collected from under S. jacobaea plants in the field. According to our study, flowering plants have the potential to weaken pasture through allelopathy, and
decomposition of above-ground litter appears as the most likely mechanism facilitating this. The aqueous extract and tissue
decomposition bioassays also revealed that L. perenne was less susceptible to S. jacobaea allelopathy than were the legumes, suggesting that encouraging a strong L. perenne component in pastures has potential for reducing the overall inhibitory ef S. jacobaea on pasture production. 相似文献

In the present investigation, 17 new synthetic butenolides, i.e. 2-arylidene-4-(4-chloro/ethyl-phenyl)but-3-en-4-olides (3–19) have been synthesized from 3-(4-chloro-benzoyl)propionic acid or 3-(4-ethyl-benzoyl)propionic acid using appropriate reagents. Some of the selected butenolides were reacted with ammonia and benzylamine to give the corresponding pyrrolones (20–31) and N-benzyl-pyrrolones (32–39) respectively. All the compounds were screened for their antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, and Rhizopus oryza. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of the compounds are reported. The pyrrolone derivatives discovered in this study may provide valuable therapeutic intervention for the treatment of microbial diseases, especially against fungal species. 相似文献

Besarhanamides A (1) and B (2) are fatty acid amides purified from the marine cyanobacterium, Lyngbya majuscula, collected from Pulau Hantu, Singapore. The structure determination of these secondary metabolites was carried out using extensive 2D NMR spectral data as well as chemical manipulations including the Marfey's method. In addition, besarhanamide A exhibited moderate toxicity with LD(50) at 13 microM in the brine shrimp toxicity bioassay. 相似文献

In this work, some N-(9-Ethyl-9H-carbazole-3-yl)-2-(phenoxy)acetamide derivatives were synthesised and evaluated for their antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity. The structural elucidation of the compounds was performed by IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and FAB+-MS spectral data and elemental analyses. The title compounds were obtained by reacting 2-chloro-N-(9-ethyl-9H-carbazole-3-yl)acetamide with some substituted phenols. The synthesised compounds were investigated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities against Micrococcus luteus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes and Candida albicans. The compounds N-(9-Ethyl-9H-carbazole-3-yl)-2-(4-ethylphenoxy)acetamide (2c) and N-(9-Ethyl-9H-carbazole-3-yl)-2-(quinolin-8-yloxy)acetamide (2n) showed notable antimicrobial activity. The compounds were also studied for their cytotoxic effects using MTT assay, and it was seen that 2n had the lowest cytotoxic activity against NIH/3T3 cells. 相似文献

As a part of a screening programme developed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of basidiomycetes, 317 isolates representing 204 species collected in Spain were screened against a range of human clinical pathogens and laboratory controls. Extracts from 45% of the isolates, representing 109 species, showed antimicrobial activity. Antibacterial activity was more pronounced than antifungal activity. The proportion of extracts from basidiomycetes showing antimicrobial activity was similar to or above that obtained for representative orders of Ascomycetes, such as Pezizales and Xylariales, but lower than that produced by members of the orders Diaporthales, Eurotiales, Hypocreales, Leotiales and Sordariales. Suprageneric taxa (orders and families) did not show pronounced differences in their antimicrobial activities though such differences were observed at the genus level, suggesting that the ability to produce these bioactive compounds is not homogenously distributed amongst the basidiomycetes. Isolates from some species showed large differences in their ability to produce metabolites with antimicrobial activity, possibly reflecting genetic differences at the infraspecific level. 相似文献

Benzenic extracts from both stems and leaves of Heterophyllaea pustulata showed the most significant activity in vivo in the Brine Shrimp Lethally Test (BST), relative to others of different polarity. They were therefore selected for in vitro antimicrobial activity studies. Bacteriostatic activity against Micrococcus luteus ATCC 9341 was detected, selectively inhibiting both oxacillin-sensitive and -resistant Staphylococcus aureus, among several gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial species tested. Antifungal activity against important opportunist microorganisms and against those involved in superficial mycosis, all from nosocomial origin was also detected. A chemical screening revealed the presence of anthraquinones as major compounds. Among them, we identified damnacanthal, rubiadin, 2-hydroxy-3-methyl anthraquinone, soranjidiol, rubiadin-1-methyl ether, and damnacanthol in the benzenic stem extract. The benzenic leaf extract shows a similar chemical composition, except for damnacanthal, damnacanthol, soranjidiol-1-methyl ether, and 3 anthraquinones whose structures have not yet been elucidated. Acute toxicity studies revealed a low toxicity in mice for the anthraquinonic extracts, as measured in the LD50 value (123 mg/kg body wt. i.v.), and death was not observed at doses of up to 4000 mg/kg body wt. s.c. 相似文献

Bacteria can produce nitrogenous compounds via both primary and secondary metabolic processes. Many bacterial volatile nitrogenous compounds produced during the secondary metabolism have been identified and reported for their antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, algicidal and antitumor activities. The production of these nitrogenous compounds depends on several factors, including the composition of culture media, growth conditions, and even the organic solvent used for their extraction, thus requiring their identification in specific conditions. In this review, we describe the volatile nitrogenous compounds produced by bacteria especially focusing on their antimicrobial activity. We concentrate on azo-compounds mainly pyrazines and pyrrolo-pyridines reported for their activity against several microorganisms. Whenever significant, extraction and identification methods of these compounds are also mentioned and discussed. To the best of our knowledge, this is first review describing volatile nitrogenous compounds from bacteria focusing on their biological activity. 相似文献

Effect of irradiance, temperature and salinity on growth and toxin production by Nodularia spumigena
The object of this work was to determine, using a full-factorial experiment, the influence of temperature, irradiance and salinity on growth and hepatotoxin production by Nodularia spumigena, isolated from Lake Alexandrina in the south-east of South Australia. Higher levels of biomass (determined as particulate organic carbon, POC), toxin production and intracellular toxin concentration per mg POC were produced under light limited conditions (30 mol m–2 s–1) and at salinities equal to or greater than those experienced in Lake Alexandrina. Both highest biomass and total toxin production rates were recorded at temperatures equal to or greater than those of the lake (20 and 30°C). The temperature at which maximum biomass and toxin production was recorded decreased from 30°C for cultures grown at 30 mol m–2 s–1 to 20°C when grown at 80 mol m–2 s–1. In contrast, intracellular toxin per mg POC was highest at the lowest growth temperature, 10°C, at both 30 and 80 mol m–2 s–1. It appears that the optimum temperature for biosynthetic pathways used in the production of toxin is lower than the optimum temperature for those pathways associated with growth. Intracellular toxin levels were higher in cells cultured at 10°C/30 mol m–2 s–1 whereas the majority of the toxin was extracellular in cells grown at 30°C/30 mol m–2 s–1. This implies that the highest concentration of toxin in lake water would occur under high temperature and high irradiance conditions. Individual environmental parameters of salinity, irradiance and temperature were all shown to influence growth and toxin production. Notwithstanding, the overall influence of these three parameters on toxin production was mediated through their effect upon growth rate. 相似文献
