The movement of natural enemies from floral resources is of particular importance in habitat manipulation research, as the distances that they disperse have consequences for the deployment of floral resources to improve insect natural enemy fitness. A number of marking techniques can be used to measure natural enemy movement; however, many of these are labour-intensive and not appropriate for many natural enemy species, the alternative, self-marking techniques, are less common. The aim of this study was to determine whether rubidium chloride (RbCl) could be used to measure the movement of Dolichogenidea tasmanica (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) from flowering buckwheat, Fagopyrum esculentum Moench plants in an organic vineyard. D. tasmanica is the most common parasitoid of leafroller larvae, a serious pest of grapevines in Australia and New Zealand. Foliar applications of rubidium chloride were made to a single strip of buckwheat in the centre of each of five vineyard areas. Sticky traps were placed in each area at distances of 0, 4, 10 and 30 m in opposite directions from the buckwheat to collect adult D. tasmanica. D. tasmanica were marked with rubidium after buckwheat plants had been sprayed with RbCl and were trapped up to 30 m from the plants within a seven-day sampling period. This study indicates that RbCl can be used to mark parasitoids to measure their movement from floral resources and may be used to inform decisions on the deployment of appropriate flowering plant species in conservation biological control.  相似文献

Resources for natural enemies are often lacking in agricultural fields. The provisioning of floral resources in crop fields can ameliorate this problem by providing nectar and pollen to natural enemies. To select an appropriate floral resource, plants must be screened for their flowering times and attractiveness to natural enemies and pests. We tested the attractiveness of nine species of annual flowering plants to hoverflies, which are important predators of aphids in California lettuce fields. We also sampled arthropods in the foliage of tested plants, to assess the abundances of other natural enemy and pest species that were present. Tested plants included three commonly-used insectary plants and six flowering plant species that showed potential as either harvestable herbs or cut flowers. Harvestable insectary plants may provide additional economic incentive for growers to set aside land for floral resources. The commonly-used insectary plant sweet alyssum consistently attracted the most hoverflies and the least bees, while potentially harvestable plants attracted few hoverflies. Competition with bees may have reduced hoverfly visits to several of the tested plant species. Sweet alyssum also stayed in bloom the longest, and contained the highest numbers of predatory hemipterans. Results suggest that plants should be screened for their attractiveness to not only the target biological control agent, but also to other potential competitors for floral resources. While this initial study focused on a limited selection of harvestable annual plants, a wide variety of other marketable plant species, particularly perennials, remain to be tested for their attractiveness to hoverflies or other beneficial arthropods.  相似文献

1 The effects of floral resources of several important non‐crop host plants of Lygus lineolaris on the longevity of Anaphes iole, one of its natural enemies, was studied. 2 Median longevity of A. iole wasps provisioned with floral resources (Erigeron annuus, Oenothera speciosa, Lamium amplexicaule, and Capsella bursa‐pastoris) was in the range 1.27–3.24 days, and did not differ from wasps in the distilled water only control (1.46–2.81 days), but was less than median longevity of wasps provisioned with distilled water + sucrose (5.30–12.46 days). No difference in longevity was observed between gender, although females usually lived slightly longer than males. 3 High‐performance anion‐exchange chromatography analyses of O. speciosa floral nectar revealed that the major carbohydrate components were sucrose, glucose, and fructose. 4 The results indicate that the floral resources of some non‐crop plants that serve as important reproductive hosts for L. lineolaris offer little or no benefit to A. iole.  相似文献

Resources added to agroecosystems to enhance biological control are potentially available to multiple members of the resident insect community—not only the biological control agents for which the resources are intended. Many studies have examined the effects of sugar feeding on the efficacy of biological control agents. However, such information is lacking for other, interacting species such as facultative hyperparasitoids, which may contribute to pest suppression but can also interfere with introduced biological control agents. Under greenhouse conditions, we tested the direct effects of sugar and nectar provisioning on the longevity, host‐killing impact and offspring production of two pupal parasitoids associated with leek moth, Acrolepiopsis assectella: the introduced biological control agent, Diadromus pulchellus, and the native facultative hyperparasitoid, Conura albifrons. Adding sucrose, buckwheat or a combination of buckwheat and common vetch to a sugar‐deprived system (potted leek plants in cages) increased parasitoid longevity and resulted in higher leek moth parasitism and mortality compared to water or common vetch treatments. However, the two parasitoid species exhibited a distinct temporal response to the treatments, likely influenced by differences in their life histories. This study provides insight into how integrating conservation biological control techniques could affect the success of a classical biological control programme.  相似文献

Summary The European starling Sturnus vulgaris preferentially incorporates fresh sprigs of particular plant species for use as nesting material. Chemicals found in these plants may act to reduce pathogen and ectoparasite populations normally found in nest environments. The present experiments were performed to test this Nest Protection Hypothesis. In the fild, we experimentally determined that wild carrot Daucus carota, a plant species preferred as nest material, effectively reduced the number of hematophagous mites found within nests relative to control nests without green vegetation. Chicks from nests containing wild carrot had higher levels of blood hemoglobin than chicks from control nests. However, there were no differences in weight or feather development. In the laboratory, we found that wild carrot and fleabane, Erigeron philadelphicus, (also preferred by starlings as nest material) substantially reduced the emergence of feeding instars of mites, while garlic mustard, Alliaria officinalis, (commonly available but not preferred) had little effect on the emergence of mites. We infer that preferred plant material may act to inhibit feeding or otherwise delay reproduction of mites, thereby reducing risk of anemia to developing nestlings.  相似文献

We compared the effects of floral nectar from buckwheat, Fagopyrum esculentum Moench, and honeydew produced by the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Homoptera: Aphididae), on longevity, nutrient levels, and egg loads of the parasitoid Diadegma insulare Cresson (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). Diadegma insulare lived for 2 days in control treatments of water or clean soybean leaves, for 6–7 days with honeydew, and in excess of 2 weeks with buckwheat nectar. Potential reasons for the superiority of buckwheat nectar over soybean aphid honeydew for extending the longevity of parasitoids include: (i) parasitoids ingest more sugars from floral sources, (ii) oligosaccharides in honeydew have a lower nutritional value than nectar sugars, and (iii) honeydew has antagonistic compounds. Overall sugar levels were lower in honeydew‐ vs. nectar‐fed female wasps, suggesting a lower feeding rate, but other explanations cannot be excluded. Diadegma insulare eclosed with high levels of lipids and glycogen, and low levels of gut and storage sugars. All carbohydrates increased over the life of both nectar‐ and honeydew‐fed wasps, but remained low or decreased in starved wasps. Lipid levels declined over the lifespan of female wasps, but females fed floral nectar showed the slowest rate of lipid decline. Diet did not affect egg load, probably because the females were not given hosts in the experiment.

Abstract.  1. To investigate how floral resources impact feeding and nutrient dynamics of parasitoids, the ichneumonid Diadegma insulare (Cresson) was monitored in cabbage fields with and without buckwheat Fagopyrum esculentum Moench borders. Biochemical analyses of field-collected wasps determined whether sugar feeding occurred, and whether it enhanced nutrient levels and increased parasitism of diamondback larvae Plutella xylostella (L.) from 2000 to 2003. The effects of experimental spatial scale on sugar feeding dynamics were also evaluated in 2001.
2. The majority of D. insulare foraging on cabbage had fed upon sugar, but floral borders did not consistently increase the proportion of sugar-fed wasps or their levels of glycogen and lipid over all 4 years. Floral borders increased sugar storage by females in 2001. More females fed on sugar when experimental plots were separated by at least 800 m compared with 67 m.
3. Feeding on buckwheat nectar vs. honeydew produced by the soybean aphid Aphis glycines Matsumura in surrounding fields was distinguished using the ratio of fructose to total sugars, which was higher in nectar- than in honeydew-fed parasitoids. Floral borders increased the probability that females collected from adjacent crops were nectar-fed in 2002, demonstrating that floral resources were utilised by foraging parasitoids. Diadegma insulare that fed upon any sugar source had higher levels of sugar and glycogen than unfed wasps, and feeding on honeydew appeared to enhance nutrient storage.
4. The prevalence of sugar or nectar feeding by female D. insulare was not correlated with parasitism rates over the 4 years from all plots, but nectar feeding was positively correlated with parasitism rates within floral plots.  相似文献

A field trial to assess the ability of Chondrostereum purpureum to limit the resprouting of cut red alder (Alnus rubra) was established in British Columbia, Canada. Overall, 92% of stumps inoculated with C. purpureum died in the first year and 100% were dead by the second year. C. purpureum was thus as effective as the herbicide treatments Carbopaste and liquid glyphosate (12% Vision) and reduced resprouts to zero. Naturally occurring C. purpureum spores colonized about 40% of untreated cut stumps and about 20% of the stumps treated with chemical herbicides. The peak production of C. purpureum basidiocarps occurred about 22 months after the trial was established, with C. purpureum on 66% of treated stumps. The following year, the basidiocarps persisted on 23% of treated stumps. About 600 young red alder trees were cut to act as spore traps 2 years after trial establishment, when the most C. purpureum basidiocarps were present on treated stumps in the trial. These spore-trap trees were subsequently sampled, and PCR markers were used to verify and characterize 43 dikaryotic C. purpureum individuals, none of which were identified as the released isolate 2139. There was little difference in average band-sharing with the applied isolate among pre-trial (37% average) and spore-trap (38% average) populations. There was therefore no evidence that the C. purpureum strain applied inundatively to stumps in this trial was detectable on nontarget trees in the local area or had any measurable impact on the local C. purpureum population.  相似文献

Understanding the novel ecological interactions that result from biological invasions is a critical issue in modern ecology and evolution as well as pest management. Introduced herbivorous insects may interact with native plants and indigenous natural enemies, creating novel tri‐trophic interactions. To help predict the potential outcomes of novel interactions, we investigated the behavioural and physiological responses of an indigenous generalist parasitoid (Habrobracon gelechiae) to an introduced generalist herbivore (the light brown apple moth, Epiphyas postvittana) and its new host plants in California. We first examined the parasitoid's host location and acceptance on a range of nine common host plants of the moth representing distinctly different geographic origins and morphologies (to examine the effect of a known toxic plant on the parasitoid's performance, an additional toxic plant species was also tested that the moth consumes in the laboratory but does not naturally attack). The parasitoid was able to locate the host larvae on all plants equally well, although clutch size was affected by host plant. We then determined fitness of the moth and the parasitoid on four representative plants. The moth larvae suffered higher mortality and a slower developmental rate on the known toxic plant than on the other three plants, but the parasitoid's fitness correlates did not differ between the host food plants. These results show a high level of plasticity in the indigenous generalist parasitoid in its ability to exploit the exotic host on a wide range of host plants, generating an invasion‐driven novel tri‐trophic interaction.  相似文献

There are many well-documented cases in which multiple parasitoids can coexist on a single host species. We examine a theoretical framework to assess whether parasitoid coexistence can be explained through differences in timing of parasitoid oviposition and parasitoid emergence. This study explicitly includes the phenology of host and parasitoid development and explores how this mechanism affects the population dynamics. Coexistence of the host with two parasitoids requires a balance between parasitoid fecundity and survival and occurs most readily if one parasitoid attacks earlier but emerges later than the other parasitoid. The host density can either be decreased or increased when a second coexisting parasitoid is introduced into the system. However, there always exists a single parasitoid type that is most effective at depressing the host density, although this type may not be successful due to parasitoid competition. The coexistence of multiple parasitoids also affects the population dynamics. For instance, population oscillations can be removed by the introduction of a second parasitoid. In general, subtle differences in parasitoid phenology can give rise to different outcomes in a host–multi-parasitoid system, and this may offer some insight into why establishing criteria for the ‘ideal’ biological control agent has been so challenging.  相似文献

In support of an ongoing study to evaluate potential farmscaping plants for utilization in organic vegetable production systems, we examined the effects of the nectar of three flowering plant species, sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima), buckwheat (Fagopyrum sagittatum), and licorice mint (Agastache foeniculum), on the lifespan and body nutrient levels of the wasp, Microplitis croceipes (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a key parasitoid of some caterpillar pests of vegetable crops in the USA. The greatest longevity (~16 days) was recorded for honey-fed wasps (positive control). Buckwheat significantly increased the lifespan of female and male wasps by at least two-fold relative to wasps provided water only (longevity = 3–4 days). Licorice mint significantly increased female longevity and numerically increased male longevity. Sweet alyssum slightly increased longevity of both sexes but this was not significantly different from the water only control. Females had a significantly longer longevity than males on all the diet treatments. The greatest carbohydrate nutrient levels (sugar content and glycogen) were recorded in honey-fed wasps followed by wasps fed buckwheat, whereas very little nutrients were detected in wasps provided sweet alyssum, licorice mint or water only. However, female wasps were observed to attempt to feed on all three flowering plant species. Thus, the low nutrient levels detected in wasps provided sweet alyssum or licorice mint may be because the nectars were not accessible or were of poor quality. Further studies will evaluate the effects of the promising farmscaping plants on the beneficial and pest insect communities in the field.  相似文献

Weeds are probably the most important vascular plants with relation to hayfever. This is because several plant families such as the Chenopodiaceae, Amaranthaceae, Graminae (Poaceae) and Compositae have wide-spread, abundant, anemophylous taxa which occur as major weeds of both agriculture and waste places. Several characteristics will be presented about the ability of these species to be successful in promoting allergies on a international basis. Interestingly, many of these plant species have been included on weed lists of countries whose geography, ecological amplitudes, climates, and agricultural practices are similar. The subsequent reproductive strategy for these species will be reviewed and biological traits discussed with reference to pollen grain production, and dispersal methods or importance as both weeds and hayfever plants.  相似文献

The larval endoparasitoid Cotesia orobenae Forbes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is an effective natural enemy of the cross-striped cabbageworm, Evergestis rimosalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), in southwest Virginia. Routine use of insecticides to control Plutella xyostella (L.) and other lepidopterous larvae in commercial plantings of cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli can disrupt populations of C. orobenae, causing localized outbreaks of the cross-striped cabbageworm to occur. Since the use of insecticides is the choice insect pest management tactic of growers in southwest Virginia, we examined the differential susceptibility of this hymenopteran parasitoid to four frequently used pesticides, methomyl (carbamate), permethrin and esfenvalerate (pyrethroids), and Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner subsp. Kurstaki (bacterium). Filter paper dipped into four different concentrations of methomyl, permethrin, and esfenvalerate were left to dry and then exposed to C. orobenae. Two concentrations of B. thuringiensis were also tested by contact bioassay, and an additional test was conducted by mixing B. thuringiensis with honey and water as a food source for the insects. Ten adult parasitoids were exposed to each treatment, replicated 10 times. Significant differences in mortality among insecticides tested (p < 0.05) were found. Most toxic to C. orobenae was permethrin, followed by esfenvalerate and methomyl. The parasitoid was not affected by B. thuringiensis when placed in contact with B. thuringiensis-treated broccoli leaves, or by ingestion of honey mixed with it (p < 0.05).  相似文献

Understanding the relationship between a predator and its prey requires consideration of the other food resources used by the predator. In the case of true omnivores, these include plant-provided foods such as leaf tissue and nectar. The presence of plant resources can increase or decrease predation depending on the degree to which they are complementary to, or substitutable for, the prey. This has implications for the role of omnivores in biological control and some groups, notably heteropteran bugs and phytoseiid mites, have been studied in this context. However, few experiments have considered the effects of plant resources both on prey consumption by individual omnivores (which have an immediate effect on the prey population) and on attributes such as longevity and fecundity which act over the longer term to affect predation at the population level. In this study, a model system comprising an omnivorous adult lacewing (Micromus tasmaniae), buckwheat flowers and aphid prey was used to investigate how floral resources affected per capita predation rate, longevity and fecundity of the lacewing. Flowers reduced prey consumption. In the absence of prey, longevity was higher for lacewings with flowers than those without. In an experiment where aphids were provided in abundance, lacewing fecundity was unaffected by flowers. However, when aphids were less abundant, providing flowers decreased the pre-oviposition period and increased the daily oviposition rate. The results demonstrate that floral resources can mediate omnivore–prey relationships and that, in the context of biological control, their effects may be either positive or negative.  相似文献

Medicinal plants are the primary material basis for disease prevention and treatment in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The conservation and sustainable utilization of these medicinal plants is critical for the development of the TCM industry. However, wild medicinal plant resources have sharply declined in recent decades. To ameliorate the shortage of medicinal plant resources, it is essential to explore the development potential of the TCM industry in different geographical regions. For this purpose, we examined the spatial distribution of commonly used medicinal plants in China, the number of Chinese medicinal material markets, and the number of TCM decoction piece enterprises. Specifically, multispecies superimposition analysis and Thiessen polygons were used to reveal the optimal range for planting bulk medicinal plants and the ideal regions for building Chinese medicinal material markets, respectively. Furthermore, we quantitatively analyzed mismatches between the spatial distribution of commonly used medicinal plant richness, Chinese medicinal material markets, and TCM decoction piece enterprises. We found that the areas suitable for growing commonly used medicinal plants in China were mainly distributed in Hengduan Mountain, Nanling Mountain, Wuling Mountain, and Daba Mountain areas. The Thiessen polygon network based on Chinese medicinal material market localities showed there are currently fewer markets in southwestern, northwestern, and northeastern China than in central and southern China. TCM decoction piece enterprises are concentrated in a few provinces, such as Hebei and Jiangxi. We found that the distribution of commonly used medicinal plants, Chinese medicinal material markets and TCM decoction piece enterprises are mismatched in Henan, Shaanxi, Hunan, Hubei, Zhejiang, Fujian, Chongqing, and Xizang. We recommend strengthening development of the TCM industry in Henan, Hunan, Zhejiang, Shaanxi, Hubei, Chongqing, Fujian, and Xizang; building more Chinese medicinal material markets in southwestern, northwestern, and northeastern China; and establishing medicinal plant nurseries in resource-rich provinces to better protect and domesticate local medicinal plants.  相似文献

Many plants pollinated by nectar-foraging animals have to maintain a balance between legitimate visitor attraction strategies and mechanisms that minimize illegitimate visits. This study investigated how floral display and neighboring species composition influences nectar robbing by hummingbirds in the tropical ornithophilous herb Heliconia spathocircinata. We tested the role of inflorescence display, flower abundance, and neighboring species in the reduction of nectar robbing in H. spathocircinata. Our results indicate that nectar robbing hummingbird activity was higher in moderately large inflorescence displays and that the frequency of nectar robbing in H. spathocircinata decreases with increased flower abundance and the presence of neighboring plant species. Neighboring non-ornithophilous plants decreased the frequency of nectar robbing in H. spathocircinata flowers to a greater extent than ornithophilous ones. These results suggest that nectar robbing hummingbirds are attracted to similar conditions that attract legitimate visitors and that spatial aggregation and mixed-species displays may represent a mechanism to dilute nectar robbing effects at an individual level.  相似文献

Since several years it is known that strains of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo-Crivelli) Vuillemin (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) are able to colonize plants as a true endophyte. However, so far no integrated bioprocess engineering approaches have been published where fermentation and formulation strategies are combined to optimize colonization of oilseed rape plant tissues. We therefore aimed at investigating whether and how blastospore (BS) formation can be shifted to resilient submerged conidiospores (SCS) by introducing osmotic stress in different growth phases. When 50 g/L NaCl was added after 48 h to a culture of B. bassiana a yield of 1.4 ± 0.1 × 1010 SCS/g sucrose in shake flasks and 1.8 ± 0.1 × 1010 SCS/g sucrose in a stirred tank reactor were obtained. In a bioreactor, 24 h after the addition of NaCl, the formation of BS slowed down, the respiratory quotient decreased and a shift from BS to SCS set in.Following these steps, different formulation strategies, namely encapsulation, film coating and liquid formulation were evaluated. B. bassiana grew out of beads as well as on commercial fungicide-coated seeds. Due to the complete suppression of fungal growth on non-sterile soil, the most suitable option was a foliar application. A liquid formulation consisting of 0.1% Triton X-114, 1% molasses, 1% titanium dioxide and 106 spores/mL was applied on leaf tips. After 14 days, the endophyte was detected by PCR and microscopic analysis in the leaves.Further research should focus on formation of SCS and protection of plants colonized by B. bassiana against herbivorous insects.  相似文献
