Summary The effect of silicon on manganese tolerance of bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. ‘Red Kidney’) grown in water culture was studied at different levels of manganese supply. Without silicon, growth depression and toxicity symptoms occurred already at 5 × 10−4 mM Mn in the nutrient solution. After addition of Aerosil (0.75 ppm Si), the plants tolerated 5 × 10−3 mM Mn and, at a higher silicon supply of 40 ppm, as much as 10−2 mM Mn in the nutrient solution without any growth depression. This increase in manganese tolerance was not caused by a depressing effect of silicon on uptake or translocation of manganese but rather by an increase in the manganese tolerance of the leaf tissue. In absence of silicon, 100 ppm Mn was already toxic for the leaf tissue, whereas with a supply of 40 ppm Si, this ‘critical level’ in the leaves was increased to more than 1000 ppm Mn. At lower manganese levels in the leaf tissue, a molar ratio Si/Mn of 6 within the tissue was sufficient to prevent manganese toxicity. Above 1000 ppm Mn, however, even a much wider Si/Mn ratio (> 20) could not prevent growth depression by manganese toxicity. With54Mn and autoradiographic studies, it could be demonstrated that, in absence of silicon, even at optimal manganese supply (10−4 mM), the distribution of manganese within the leaf blades was inhomogeneous and characterized by spot-like accumulations. In presence of silicon, however, the manganese distribution was homogeneous in the lower concentration range of manganese and still fairly homogeneous in the high concentration range. This effect of silicon on manganese distribution on the tissue level was also reflected on the cellular level. In the presence of silicon, a higher proportion of the leaf manganese could be found in the press sap,i.e., had been transported into the vacuoles, than in the absence of silicon. The increase in manganese tolerance of bean leaves by silicon therefore seems to be primarily caused by the prevention of local manganese accumulation within the leaf tissue which leads to local disorders of the metabolism and, correspondingly, growth depression.  相似文献

Summary Soybean (Glycine max (L) Merr. cv. Bragg) seedlings were grown in nutrient solutions to evaluate the response to manganese nutrition as affected by potassium supply. In solutions containing 275 M manganese, increasing the solution concentration of potassium from 1 mM to 10 mM alleviated symptoms of manganese toxicity, decreased manganese concentrations in the leaves and increased dry matter yields of the plants. The reduction in manganese toxicity was brought about by a reduced rate of root absorption of manganese at high potassium supply levels.Increasing the supply of either potassium or manganese decreased the leaf concentration of magnesium although there were no apparent symptoms of magnesium deficiency in any treatment. The reduced concentration of magnesium in the leaves was due to effects of potassium and manganese on the rate of root absorption of magnesium.Under manganese deficiency conditions, growth was reduced and manganese concentrations in plant parts were very low; there was no effect of potassium supply when manganese was absent from the nutrient solution.  相似文献

Summary The effect has been studied of varying levels of copper supply on the copper, iron and manganese contents of plants ofT. subterraneum in which the growth rate had been altered by variation in nitrate supply and light intensity.It has been found that the copper content of the plants is related logarithmically to the level of copper in the nutrient and is not affected by nitrate supply or intensity of illumination. Within the limits set, there is no change in the copper content of the tops with time, but the concentration in the roots shows a progressive increase, particularly at the higher levels of copper supply. Between one-fifth and one-quarter of the copper present in the roots is in the free space.The concentration of both iron and manganese decline with increase in copper supply. Although this is largely an indirect result arising from increased growth at the higher copper supply, a considerable distortion of the Fe/Mn ratio can occur. In the roots, however, there appears to be a direct restrictive effect of the higher copper supply on manganese concentration, over and above the indirect effect of growth dilution.The data on which this paper is based are mainly from the these submitted by M. Summary A glasshouse experiment was conducted to study the effects of water content of the topsoil on the micronutrient nutrition of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) growing in a siliceous sandy soil of marginal micronutrient status, with and without a supply of micronutrients at lower depths. The main objectives were to investigate whether micronutrient supplies would be sustained for the regrowth of defoliated grass after the topsoil had dried, and to assess the contribution made by small amounts of micronutrients in the subsoil to nutrient supply.In the absence of supply from deeper layers, topsoil drying rapidly induced deficiency of micronutrients, particularly of manganese, resulting in significant yield depression. When small amounts of micronutrients were present in a deeper, wet layer there was little reduction in yield after the topsoil had dried.The evidence suggests that, provided the roots had access to water in the subsoils, significant amounts of manganese, zinc and copper can be absorbed from topsoils as dry or drier than wilting point. Supply of micronutrients to the subsoil appears to have enhanced the efficiency of manganese absorption from dry topsoil.  相似文献

Summary Four plant species of woodland clearings — Avenella flexuosa, Chamaenerion angustifolium, Rumex acetosella, and Senecio sylvaticus — were grown on five different horizons of an iron-humus podzol profile. Reasonable growth was achieved only on the A0 horizon, which was rich in organic matter. The growth reduction on the other horizons was correlated with low concentrations of manganese and phosphorus in soils and plant organs. The restriction of so-called acidophilous species to acid soils is interpreted as meaning that they have a need for a high supply of manganese.  相似文献

Abstract

The existence of specific sites in tRNA for the binding of divalent cations has been seriously questioned by electrostatic considerations [Leroy & Guéron (1979) Biopolymers, 16, 2429–2446], However, our earlier studies of the binding of Mg2+ and Mn2+ to yeast tRNATyr have indicated that spermine creates new binding sites for divalent cations [Weygand-Durasevi? et al. (1977) Biochim. Biophys. Acta, 479, 332–344; Nöthig-Laslo et al. (1981) Eur. J. Biochem. 117, 263–267]. We have now used yeast tRNATyr, spin labeled at the hypermodified purine (i6A-37) in the anticodon loop, to study the effect of spermine on the binding of manganese ions. The presence of eight spermine molecules per tRNATyr at high ionic strength (0.2 M NaCl, 0.05 M triethanolamine-HCl) and at low temperature (7°C) enhances the binding of manganese to tRNATyr. This effect could not be explained by electrostatic binding. The initial binding of manganese to tRNATyr affects the motional properties of the spin label indicating a change of the conformation of the anticodon loop. From the absence of the paramagnetic effect of manganese on the ESR spectra of the spin label one can conclude that the first binding site for manganese is at a distance from i6A-37, influencing the spin label motion through a long-range effect. The enhancement of the binding of manganese to tRNATyr by spermine is lost upon destruction of its specific macromolecular structure and it does not occur in single stranded or in double-stranded polynucleotides. The observed effect can be explained by the binding of Mn2+ to new sites, created by the binding of spermine, which are specific for the macromolecular structure of tRNA.  相似文献

Summary Mineral deposits have been found in the cell walls of two newly described green algae,Siderocelis minor Crawford andScenedesmus granulatus West et West f.salina Crawford. A morphological account using transmission electron microscopy coupled with X-ray micro-analysis has shown that the deposits consist chiefly of iron and manganese though other elements were also found. Several possible explanations have been suggested for the variation in iron/manganese ratio—the ecological conditions pertaining in the natural habitat being considered particularly relevant.  相似文献

The effects of the metal ions manganese and cobalt on force production by the abdominal superficial flexor muscle of the Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus, have been studied in response to both neuronal stimulation and electrical field stimulation applied to an isolated neuromuscular preparation, and by selectively blocking synaptic transmission with ivermectin. In response to both forms of stimulation, low concentrations of manganese added to the standard N. norvegicus saline increased the contractile force produced by the muscle, whereas higher concentrations of manganese inhibited both responses in a dose-dependent manner, until force was completely abolished at concentrations above 2.9 mM manganese. Cobalt ions produced similar effects, and no significant difference was found between the concentration of the two ions at 50% force inhibition (Km) or between the two stimulation methods (manganese: 1.22 mM; cobalt: 1.29 mM, P = 0.86). This suggests that they have a similar mode of action, and a postsynaptic site of inhibition. These Km values are considerably higher than the concentrations of these ions known to accumulate in the haemolymph of N. norvegicus under eutrophic conditions, and it therefore seems unlikely that accumulations of manganese or cobalt ions under such conditions would cause any significant inhibition of muscle contraction force. A composite phyco-biomass including four different marine macroalgae species (Chaetomorpha sp., Polysiphonia sp., Ulva sp., and Cystoseira sp.) was evaluated as a novel biosorbent for the biosorption of manganese ions from aqueous solution. The experimental studies were performed to optimize the operational factors including solution pH, biosorbent amount, initial manganese concentration, and reaction time in a batch-mode biosorption system. The removal yield of the biosorbent for manganese ions increased with increasing pH, manganese ion concentration, and reaction time, while it decreased as the biosorbent dose increased. The obtained kinetic data indicated that the removal of manganese ions by the biosorbent was best described by the pseudo-second-order model and the pore diffusion also contributed to the biosorption process. The results of isotherm and thermodynamic studies showed that the Freundlich model represented the biosorption equilibrium data well and this biotreatment system was feasible, spontaneous, and physical. The maximum manganese uptake capacity of used biosorbent was found to be 55.874 mg g?1. Finally, a single-stage batch manganese biosorption system was designed and its kinetic performance was evaluated. All these findings revealed that the prepared composite macroalgae biosorbent has a fairly good potential for the removal of manganese ions from the aqueous medium.  相似文献

Summary Bacillus subtilis ATCC 21332 produces an extracellular lipopeptide, called surfactin, a potent surfactant. Using a new technique for cell culturing, continuous phasing with feedback control, the effects of manganese on the growth, and the associated production of surfactin, were investigated. An intimate relationship was revealed between the availability of iron and manganese and the utilization of nitrogen. A critical proportionality of 920/7.7/1.0 (molar basis) of nitrogen to iron to manganese was identified. Increasing the manganese reduced the requirement for nitrogen and resulted in growth under iron limitation. The production of surfactin could be sustained for at least 30 consecutive generations growing under either an iron or nitrogen limitation, but only if manganese was available. The dynamic response of B. subtilis to changes in manganese concentration revealed a non-linear relationship that required several generations to stabilize. Offprint requests to: J. D. The rate of NH4+-N absorption by algae and aquatic weeds in the dark has been shown to be 4-5 times greater for plants which are N-limited as compared to plants with sufficient available N. Eight species of green algae, 2 blue-green algae, 2 diatoms, and 3 aquatic weeds were used to demonstrate the usefulness of the test in determining if available N was in surplus or limited supply in a particular environment. The test was shown not to differentiate between blue-green algae capable of fixing N (4 species) from media with NO3-N or without combined nitrogen. The factors influencing the results of NH4+-N absorption tests have been investigated. In order to differentiate between plants with sufficient available N and those which are N limited, the rate of NH4+-N absorption (0.1 mg N) over 1-hr incubation in the dark by 10-20 mg of algae or aquatic weed tissues is measured. The relatively simple analysis for NH4+-N in the samples makes it very easy to follow the changing N nutrition of plants in cultures with a limited N supply or in the presence of possible N sources.  相似文献

The impact of domestic and wild Caprini browsing on Quercus ilex has been examined in an area of the Sierra de Cazorla. Vegetation as a herbivore food supply, herbivore feeding regime and density in the study area during six sampling periods throughout two years, has been quantified. Wild Caprini show diets similar to the available vegetation, whereas domestic Caprini tend more towards the trophic specialities (browsing or grazing) of their genus. Nevertheless, this tendency was more pronounced in domestic goats than in sheep. A hypothetical estimate of Q. ilex intake by each species under the study conditions was carried out. It was found that domestic Caprini have a greater impact on the holm oak than wild Caprini, density and feeding-niche deviations being the main factors responsible for this situation.Abbreviations DM= dry matter  相似文献

Summary Sporulation ofBacillus subtilis ATCC 9799 in nutrient broth was correlated with Mn++ concentrations at 10–7 to 10–6 M. This specific response was employed for the bioassay of plant available soil manganese. A correlation between sporulation ofB. subtilis in growth medium supplemented with soil samples sterilized by gamma rays or by ethylene oxide, and growth response ofAvena sativa to added manganese was observed in 5 of 6 loessial and rendzina highly calcareous soil types. No correlation between chemical tests and response to manganese fertilization of this soil could be observed.The possible use of this method for the bioassay of plant-available soil manganese is discussed.  相似文献

Forty‐seven manganese‐oxidizing bacterial strains, isolated from manganese nodules, sediment, and sea‐water samples collected from the Pacific Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, were studied to elucidate the role, if any, of plasmids in bacterial manganese oxidation in the marine environment.

Twenty‐two strains of Pseudomonas and seven unidentified species were found to harbor single plasmids. Seven of the plasmid‐containing Pseudomonas spp. and one of the unidentified strains were selected for curing. Only Pseudomonas strain 57, originally isolated from a manganese nodule collected from the Pacific Ocean, was cured successfully. This strain carried a plasmid (pZPl) of about 9 Mdal, and demonstrated enzymatic oxidation of manganese. Although the function ascribable to pZPl remains cryptic, evidence obtained from the study of Pseudomonas strain 57 (carrying pZPl) and its cured derivative suggests that the plasmid encodes resistance to manganese and copper. It is hypothesized that the plasmid (pZPl) provides an ecologically significant strategy for survival in the deep‐sea nodule environment since it encodes for heavy metal resistance associated with the manganese oxidation process.  相似文献

The action of bovine lactoferrin saturated with iron, zinc and manganese on the intracellular multiplication of Legionella pneumophila in HeLa cells has been tested. The results obtained showed that lactoferrin did not influence the invasive efficiency of Legionella. The intracellular multiplication of the bacterium was inhibited by apo-lactoferrin and by lactoferrin saturated with manganese and zinc, whereas lactoferrin saturated with iron enhanced the intracellular growth. Experiments in parallel were performed with iron, manganese and zinc citrate to test the effect due to the metal ions alone. Even in this condition the addition of an iron chelate enhanced the multiplication of Legionella while the manganese chelate produced a certain inhibition.  相似文献

Summary Application of iron as ferrous sulphate or chloride to a loam not deficient in manganese had no effect on the yield but increased the uptake of manganese even in barley which grew vigorously.In an experiment with sugar beet on two soils contrasted with regard to their available manganese supply, applications of manganese, iron and nitrogen were tested in all combinations. On the Købelev soil, not deficient in manganese, no increases in yields were obtained on addition of ferrous sulphate while increases in manganese uptake were found for all combinations of treatments except where iron was added in the presence of manganese.On the manganese deficient Faarevejle soil, significantly higher increases in yields of roots were obtained from ferrous sulphate in the presence of nitrogen than in the presence of manganese. The effect of iron in the presence of nitrogen on the yield of tops was also significant. These treatments also gave the highest increases in manganese uptake.The amounts of manganese extractable from the soils by magnesium nitrate over a range of pH 2–8 could be increased considerably by addition of ferrous sulphate.The results support the suggestion that application of ferrous sulphate to some soils has the same effect as an addition of manganese.  相似文献

Summary The uptake and distribution of iron and manganese were studied in a manganese-sensitive soybean cultivar (‘Bragg’) grown over a range of supply levels of these nutrients in solution culture. At high (90 and 275 μM) manganese levels, increasing the iron concentration in solution from 2 to 100 μM partially overcame the effects of manganese toxicity. Interactions between manganese and iron occurred for dry matter yields, rate of Mn absorption by the roots, and the proportions of manganese and iron transported to the tops. No interaction was observed for the rate of root absorption of iron. The percentage distribution of manganese in the plant top increased with increasing iron, despite a reduced rate of Mn uptake. On the other hand, iron uptake was independent of solution Mn concentration and increased with increasing solution Fe. Also more iron was retained in the roots at high Mn and/or Fe levels in solution. Concentrations of manganese and iron in roots, stems and individual leaves were affected independently by the manganese and iron supplyi.e. without any interaction occurring between the two elements. In general, the concentration in a plant part was related directly to the solution concentration. Symptoms resembling iron deficiency correlated poorly with leaf Fe concentrations whereas high levels of manganese were found in leaves displaying Mn toxicity symptoms.  相似文献
