The effects of increasing nitrobenzene (NB) concentrations and hydraulic retention times (HRT) on the treatment of NB were investigated in a sequential anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR)/aerobic completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR) system. In the first step of the study, the maximum COD removal efficiencies were found as 88% and 92% at NB concentrations varying between 30 mg L?1 and 210 mg L?1 in ABR. The minimum COD removal efficiency was 79% at a NB concentration of 700 mg L?1. The removal efficiency of NB was nearly 100% for all NB concentrations in the ABR reactor. The methane gas production and the methane gas percentage remained stable (1500 mL day?1 and 48–50%, respectively) as the NB concentration was increased from 30 to 210 mg L?1. In the second step of the study it was found that as the HRT decreased from 10.38 days to 2.5 days the COD removal efficiencies decreased slightly from 94% to 92% in the ABR. For maximum COD and NB removal efficiencies the optimum HRT was found as 2.5 days in the ABR. The total COD removal efficiency was 95% in sequential anaerobic (ABR)/aerobic (CSTR) reactor system at a minimum HRT of 1 day. When the HRT was decreased from 10.38 days to 1 day, the methane percentage decreased from 42% to 29% in an ABR reactor treating 100 mg L?1 NB. Nitrobenzene was reduced to aniline under anaerobic conditions while aniline was mineralized to catechol with meta cleavage under aerobic conditions.  相似文献

A pilot-scale test was conducted in a submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) for 452 days to treat high-strength traditional Chinese medicine wastewater from two-phase anaerobic digest effluent. This study focuses on the effects of operational parameters on effluent quality of a SMBR. The parameters include shorter hydraulic retention time (HRT), higher influent COD concentration, higher COD loading rate and mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS). The experimental results demonstrated that when HRT was 5 h and the influent COD was less than 3000 mg L−1, the effluent quality of the SMBR evaluated from its COD content (CODfilt) could meet the accepted Chinese standards for water reclamation; when HRT was 3.2 h and the influent COD was less than 3000 mg L −1, or HRT was 5 h and the influent COD fluctuated between 3000 and 6000 mg L−1, the effluent quality of the SMBR could meet the normal Chinese discharged standard. Statistical analyses showed that CODfilt correlated positively with the COD loading rate. It correlated negatively with the MLSS for MLSS values between 7543 and 13 694 mg L−1. When MLSS was >13 694 mg L−1 it correlated positively with CODfilt. Based on experimental values from SMBR and on values predicted by a simulation model generated using the back propagation neural network (BPNN) theory, the optimum operational parameters for the treatment of a high-strength TCM wastewater were as follows: HRT was 5 h, SRT was 100 day, COD loading rate was<20.5 kg m−3 d−1, the range of MLSS was 7543–13 694 mg L−1.  相似文献

This paper describes the thermophilic (55 °C) anaerobic biodegradation of a mixed feed composed of vinasses and cutting oil wastewater (COW) in a laboratory upflow anaerobic fixed-film reactor (UAFF) with a porous support medium. The experimental protocol was defined to examine the effect of increasing the percentage of cutting oil wastewater in the feed. The UAFF reactor was initially started-up with vinasses as the only carbon source at an organic loading rate of 22.3 kg COD/m3 day and HRT of 0.8 days using porous particles as the support (SIRAN). The percentage of organic matter composed of vinasses was subsequently reduced while increasing the amount of cutting oil until 100% of cutting oil wastewater was added in the feed. Four stages were considered in the study (0, 42.4, 66.6 and 100% COW). HRT was adjusted in order to maintain an approximately constant organic loading rate applied to the system. Under theses conditions, the UAFF reactor was subjected to a programme of steady-state operation with hydraulic retention times (HRT) in the range 0.8–0.15 days and organic loading rates (OLR) between 22.3 and 14.9 kg COD/m3 day in order to evaluate the treatment capacity of the system. The COD removal efficiency was found to be 87% COD and 94.6% TOC in the reactor when treating vinasses at 22.3 kg COD/m3 day. The volumetric methane level produced in the digester reached 0.45 m3/m3 day. After an operating period of 120 days, the reactor was fed with cutting oil wastewater (COW) as the only source of carbon. An OLR of 16.7 kg COD/m3 day was achieved with 85.8% COD removal efficiency (58.1%TOC) in the experimental UAFF reactor. Under these conditions the volumetric methane produced in the digester was negligible.Hence, COW can be removed, if not degraded, by anaerobic treatment in the presence of a biodegradable co-substrate. Wine vinasses degradation creates conditions for non-biological removal of COW constituents. More studies are necessary in order to test the mechanisms of organic removal when biodegradation apparently had ceased. Also, toxicity assays of COW are necessary to evaluate the toxicity to the methanogenic community.  相似文献

Olive mill wastewater (OMW) is a highly polluting wastewater, caused by a high organic load and phenol content. These characteristics suggest that it may be suitable for aerobic treatment and anaerobic bacterial digestion. Aerobic treatment coupled with anaerobic bacterial digestion may be economically feasible as the methane produced is a valuable energy source while simultaneously purifying the OMW. In an attempt to improve the overall performance of the process, the addition of a co-substrate such as whey to the aerobic treatment pre-treatment of OMW by the yeast Candida tropicalis was studied. The two-stage system operated satisfactorily up to an organic loading rate (OLR) of 3.0 kg COD L−1 day−1 with a biogas production rate of 1.25 Lbiogas Lreactor−1 day−1 and a total COD reduction in excess of 93% (62% COD reduction in aerobic pretreatment and 83% COD reduction in anaerobic digestion). Fifty-four percent of the phenol was biodegraded during the aerobic treatment stage, and biogas with between 68% and 75% methane was produced during anaerobic digestion.  相似文献

A pool of hydrolases with 21.4 U g−1 lipase activity was produced through solid-state fermentation of the fungus Penicillium restrictum in waste from the Orbignya oleifera (babassu) oil processing industry. Enzymatic hydrolysis and anaerobic biodegradability tests were conducted on poultry slaughterhouse effluents with varying oil and grease contents (150–1200 mg l−1) and solid enzymatic pool concentrations (0.1–1.0% w/v). Enhanced anaerobic treatment efficiency relative to raw effluent was achieved when a 0.1% concentration of enzymatic pool was used in the pre-hydrolysis stage with 1200 mg oil and grease l−1 (chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency of 85% vs. 53% and biogas production of 175 ml vs. 37 ml after 4 d).  相似文献

Biodecolourisation of an azo dye by anaerobic cultures using a liposomal textile levelling agent as primary substrate was assessed. Liposomes seem to facilitate the uptake of the dye (Acid Orange 7) by anaerobic biomass, leading to a fast decolourisation (colour removal of 96% was achieved in the first sample port of the reactor profiles). On the other hand, the presence of dye (60–300 mg l−1) caused a decrease in the chemical oxygen demand (COD) degradation rate (4.1–2.5 g COD removed l−1 d−1 for 60 and 300 mg l−1 of dye, respectively), suggesting inhibitory effects.Aerobic degradation of aromatic amines was investigated in aerobic respirometric assays with different types of inocula. Sulfanilic acid and aniline were mineralised by inocula with a significant microbiological diversity, even with domestic effluent. These results were confirmed by a significant reduction of COD, total organic carbon (TOC) and a high oxygen consumption (biochemical oxygen demand/theoretical oxygen demand), 92±4%. Kinetic analysis showed that a sigmoid function describes quite well the experimental data, even better than the exponential model. Orthanilic and metanilic acids and 1-amino-2-naphtol were persistent under the tested conditions.  相似文献

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of a 20 l lab scale anaerobic hybrid reactor (AHR) combining sludge blanket in the lower part and filter in the upper part under varying organic loading rates (OLRs) in order to study biodegradation of olive mill effluent (OME). For this purpose, some parameters, such as total phenols, effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and pH in the influent and effluent, and removal efficiencies for those parameters (except pH) were continuously monitored throughout the experimental period of 477 days. Eleven different organic loadings between 0.45 and 32 kg COD m−3 day−1 were imposed by either varying influent COD or hydraulic retention time (HRT). The results demonstrated that the AHR reactor could tolerate high influent COD concentrations. Removal efficiencies for the studied pollution parameters were found to be as follows: COD, 50–94%; total phenol, 39–80%; color, 0–54%; and suspended solids, 19–87%. The levels of VFAs in the effluent, which was principally acetate, butyrate, iso-butyrate, and propionate, varied between 10 and 2005 mg l−1 depending upon OLRs. A COD removal efficiency of 90% could be achieved as long as OLR is kept at a level of less than 10 kg COD m−3 day−1. However, a secondary treatment unit for polishing purposes is necessary to comply with receiving media discharge standards.  相似文献

Ozonation pretreatment was applied to palm oil mill effluent (POME) prior to anaerobic digestion using the anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR). Ozonation increased BOD/COD by 37.9% with a COD loss of only 3.3%. At organic loads of 6.48-12.96 kg COD/m3/d, feeding with non-ozonated POME caused a system failure. The ozonated POME gave significantly higher TCOD removal at loadings 6.52 and 9.04 kg COD/m3/d but failed to sustain the operation at loading 11.67 kg COD/m3/d. Effects of cycle time (CT) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) were determined using quadratic regression model. The generated response surface and contour plot showed that at this high load conditions (6.52-11.67 kg COD/m3/d), longer HRT and shorter CT gave the ASBR higher organic removal efficiency and methane yield. The model was able to satisfactorily describe the relationship of these two key operating parameters.  相似文献

Nutrient removal from synthetic wastewater was investigated using a four-step sequencing batch reactor (SBR) at different phenol (C6H5OH) concentrations in order to determine the inhibition effects of phenol on biological nutrient removal. The nutrient removal process consisted of anaerobic, oxic, anoxic, and oxic phases with hydraulic residence times (HRT) of 1 h/3 h/1 h/1 h and a settling phase of 3/4 h. Solids retention time (SRT) was kept constant at 10 days in all experiments. Initial phenol concentrations were varied between 0 and 600 mg l−1 at seven different levels. The effects of phenol on COD, NH4-N, and PO4-P removals and effluent nutrient levels were investigated. Phenol was almost completely degraded up to 400 mg l−1 phenol concentration resulting in almost negligible inhibition effects on COD, NH4-N, and PO4-P removals. Nutrient removals were adversely affected by phenol at concentrations above 400 mg l−1. Above 95% COD, 90% NH4-N and 65% PO4-P removal was obtained for phenol concentrations below 400 mg l−1. The sludge volume index (SVI) was almost constant around 45 ml g−1 for phenol concentrations below 400 mg l−1 but increased to 90 ml g−1 at a phenol level of 600 mg l−1.  相似文献

Two-phase anaerobic digestion of cheese whey was investigated in a system consisting of a stirred acidogenic reactor followed by a stirred methanogenic reactor, the latter being coupled to a membrane filtration system to enable removal of soluble effluent whilst retaining solids. The acidogenic reactor was operated at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of one day, giving maximum acidification of 52.25% with up to 5 g/l volatile fatty acids, of which 63.7% was acetic acid and 24.7% was propionic acid. The methanogenic reactor received an organic load up to 19.78 g COD/ld, corresponding to a HRT of 4 days, at which 79% CODs and 83% BOD(5) removal efficiencies were obtained. Average removals of COD, BOD(5) and TSS in the two-phase anaerobic digestion process were 98.5%, 99% and 100%, respectively. The daily biogas production exceeded 10 times reactor volume and biogas methane content was greater than 70%.  相似文献

The discharge of textile wastewater containing dye in the environment is varying for both toxicology and esthetical reasons as dyes impede light penetration, damage the quality of the receiving streams. Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor with anaerobic digester sludge treating starch wastewater has been used to investigate the removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and colour of textile dye wastewater. In this study, the starch and textile dye wastewater was mixed at 70 and 30%, respectively, and the experiments were carried out with recycle of treated wastewater at different percentage as 10, 20, 30 and 40. Maximum removal of COD and colour was 96% and 93.3%, respectively, at 30% recycle. At various OLR and HRT, the maximum removal of COD, colour was 95.9%, 93% at 6.81 kg COD/m3d and 96%, 93% with 24 h of HRT. The maximum production of biogas at 24 h of HRT with 30% recycle was about 355 l/d. The Volatile fatty acid/Alkalinity ratio of methanogenic reactor was found to be 0.049–0.053. The result provided evidence, the starch and dye wastewater have wide variation in their characteristics was treated on combination, this new technology supports the effective utilization of starch waste in destruction of dye.  相似文献

The removal efficiencies of 15 PAHs and some COD components (inert, readily degradable, slowly degradable and metabolic products) from a wastewater taken from a petrochemical industry treatment plant (İzmir, Turkey) have been determined using an aerobic completely stirred tank reactor (CSTR). Addition of rhamnolipid surfactant (15 mg l−1) increased the removal efficiencies of PAHs and soluble COD from 72% and 90% to 80% and 99%, respectively. The rhamnolipid treatment caused a significant increase of 5- and 6-ring PAH degradation. The soluble COD removal efficiency was 93%, in CSTR reactors with rhamnolipid added. The inert COD removal efficiency was 60% in a CSTR reactor containing rhamnolipid. Batch tests showed that removal arising from the adsorption of the PAHs was low (between 1.88% and 4.84%) while the removal of PAHs from the petrochemical industry wastewater via volatilization varied between 0.69% and 5.92%. Low sorption capacity (Kp) values for refinery activated sludge (approximately 2.98 l g−1) confirmed that bio-sorption was not an important mechanism controlling the fate of PAHs in aerobic CSTR reactors. Models proposed to simulate the PAH removal indicated that 94% of the PAHs were removed via biodegradation.  相似文献

The effects of lowering the operational pH from 6 to 5 on mesophilic (30 °C) sulfate reduction during the acidification of sucrose at an organic loading rate of 5 gCOD (lreactor d)−1 and at a COD/SO42− ratio of 4 were evaluated in a CSTR and in a UASB reactor. The HRT was 24 h and 10 h, respectively. Acidification was complete in both reactors at pH 6 and the lowering of the operational pH to 5 did not affect the acidification efficiency in the CSTR but decreased the acidification efficiency of the UASB to 72%. The decrease to pH 5 caused an increase in the effluent butyrate and ethanol concentrations in both reactors. Lowering the pH from 6 to 5 caused a decrease in sulfate reduction efficiencies in both reactors, from 43% to 25% in the CSTR and from 95% to 34% in the UASB reactor. The acidification and sulfate reduction efficiencies at pH 5 could be increased to 94% and 67%, respectively, by increasing the HRT of the UASB reactor to 24 h.  相似文献

Anaerobic digestion of cheese whey wastewaters (CW) was investigated in a system consisting of an ecological pretreatment followed by upflow anaerobic filter (UAF). The pretreatment was conducted to solve the inhibition problems during anaerobic treatment of CW caused by the amounts of fats, proteins and carbohydrates and to avoid the major problems of clogging in the reactor. The optimized ecological pretreatment of diluted CW induce removal yields of 50% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 60% of total suspended solids (TSS) after acidification by Lactobacillus paracasei at 32 degrees C during 20 h and neutralization with lime. The pretreated CW was used to feed UAF (35 degrees C). The effects of organic loading rate (OLR) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the pretreated CW anaerobic degradation were examined. The average total COD removals achieved was 80-90%. The performance of the reactor was depressed by increasing the COD concentration to 20 g/l (OLR = 4 gCOD/ld) and the COD removal efficiency was reduced to 72%. Significant methane yield (280 l/kg COD removal) was obtained at an HRT of 2 days.  相似文献

Biological treatment of synthetic wastewater containing Cu(II) ions was realized in an activated sludge unit with pre-adsorption of Cu(II) onto powdered waste sludge (PWS). Box-Behnken experimental design method was used to investigate Cu(II), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and toxicity removal performance of the activated sludge unit under different operating conditions. The independent variables were the solids retention time (SRT, 5–30 d), hydraulic residence time (HRT, 5–25 h), feed Cu(II) concentration (0–50 mg L?1) and PWS loading rate (0–4 g h?1) while percent Cu(II), COD, toxicity (TOX) removals and the sludge volume index (SVI) were the objective functions. The data were correlated with a quadratic response function (R2 = 0.99). Cu(II), COD and toxicity removals increased with increasing PWS loading rate and SRT while decreasing with the increasing feed Cu(II) concentration and HRT. Optimum conditions resulting in maximum Cu(II), COD, toxicity removals and SVI values were found to be SRT of 30 d, HRT 15 h, PWS loading rate 3 g h?1 and feed Cu(II) concentration of less than 30 mg L?1.  相似文献

The performance of a laboratory-scale sewage treatment system composed of an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) at a temperature of (22–35 °C) was evaluated. The entire treatment system was operated at different hydraulic retention times (HRT’s) of 13.3, 10 and 5.0 h. An overall reduction of 80–86% for CODtotal; 51–73% for CODcolloidal and 20–55% for CODsoluble was found at a total HRT of 5–10 h, respectively. By prolonging the HRT to 13.3 h, the removal efficiencies of CODtotal, CODcolloidal and CODsoluble increased up to 92, 89 and 80%, respectively. However, the removal efficiency of CODsuspended in the combined system remained unaffected when increasing the total HRT from 5 to 10 h and from 10 to 13.3 h. This indicates that, the removal of CODsuspended was independent on the imposed HRT. Ammonia-nitrogen removal in MBBR treating UASB reactor effluent was significantly influenced by organic loading rate (OLR). 62% of ammonia was eliminated at OLR of 4.6 g COD m−2 day−1. The removal efficiency was decreased by a value of 34 and 43% at a higher OLR’s of 7.4 and 17.8 g COD m−2 day−1, respectively. The mean overall residual counts of faecal coliform in the final effluent were 8.9 × 104 MPN per 100 ml at a HRT of 13.3 h, 4.9 × 105 MPN per 100 ml at a HRT of 10 h and 9.4 × 105 MPN per 100 ml at a HRT of 5.0 h, corresponding to overall log10 reduction of 2.3, 1.4 and 0.7, respectively. The discharged sludge from UASB–MBBR exerts an excellent settling property. Moreover, the mean value of the net sludge yield was only 6% in UASB reactor and 7% in the MBBR of the total influent COD at a total HRT of 13.3 h. Accordingly, the use of the combined UASB–MBBR system for sewage treatment is recommended at a total HRT of 13.3 h.  相似文献

A laboratory-scale multistage anaerobic biofilm reactor of three compartments with a working volume of 54-L was used for treating a synthetic medium-strength wastewater containing molasses as a carbon source at different influent conditions. The start-up period, stability and performance of this reactor were assessed at mesophilic temperature (35 °C). During the start-up period, pH fluctuations were observed because there was no microbial selection or zoning, but as the experiment progressed, results showed that phase separation had occurred inside the reactor. COD removal percentages of 91.6, 91.6, 90.0 and 88.3 were achieved at organic loading rates of 3.0, 4.5, 6.75 and 9.0 kg COD/m3 day, respectively. A decrease in HRT from 24 to 16 h had no effect on COD removal efficiency. When HRT decreased to 8 h, COD removal efficiency was still 84.9%. Recirculation ratios of 0.5 and 1.0 had no effect on COD removal but other factors such as the volatile fatty acid (VFA) content were affected. The effect of toxic shock was also investigated and results showed that the main advantage of using this bioreactor lies in its compartmentalized structure.  相似文献

The C:N ratio of the pharmaceutical wastewaters is usually suitable for a combination of the anaerobic pretreatment with the high COD removal and aerobic posttreatment with the efficient biological N removal. This kind of anaerobic-aerobic process was tested in semipilot scale by using a UASB reactor and an activated sludge system with a predenitrification (total volume 100 1). It was found that at a total HRT of 2.3 days an average of 97.5% of COD and 73.5% of total N was removed. The UASB reactor was operated at 30°C with a volumetric loading rate of 8.7 kg.m-3.d-1, the efficiency of COD removal was 92.2%. The processes, which take part in the biological removal of nitrogen, especially the nitrification, were running with lower rates than usually observed in aerobic treatment systems.Abbreviations AAO anaerobic anoxic oxic configuration - AOO anaerobic oxic oxic configuration - B V volumetric organic loading rate (kg COD.m-3. d-1) - dB x specific COD removal rate (mg COD. g-1 VSS. d-1) - DNR denitrification rate (mg N–NO3. g-1 VSS. h-1) - ECOD efficiency of COD removal (%) - HRT hydraulic retention time (d) - NR nitrification rate (mg N–NO3. g-1 VSS. h-1) - R recirculation ratio (%) - SBP specific biogas production (m3.kg-1 removed COD) - SRT solids retention time; sludge age (d) - SS suspended solids (g.1-1) - UASB upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor - VSS volatile suspended solids (g.1-1)  相似文献

The catalytically oxidized olive mill wastewater (OMW) was subjected to continuous anaerobic treatment using two treatment schemes. The 1st step in both schemes was an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor (2 0 l). The 2nd step was either a hybrid UASB reactor or a classical one (1 0 l, each). The 1st stage was operated at constant hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 24 h. The organic loading rate (OLR) varied from 3.4 to 4.8 kgCOD/m3 d depending on the quality of the pretreated wastewater. The results obtained indicated that, the 1st step UASB reactor achieved a COD percentage removal value of 53.9%. Corresponding total BOD5 and TSS removal were 51.5% and 68.3%, respectively. The results obtained indicated that the hybrid UASB reactor as a 2nd step produced better quality effluent as compared to the classical one. This could be attributed to the presence of the packing curtain sponge with active biomass in the sedimentation part of hybrid UASB reactor which minimizes suspended solids washout, consequently enhancement of the efficiency of the reactor.Available data showed that a two stage system consisting of a classical and a hybrid UASB reactor operated at a total HRT of 48 h and OLR of 2.0 kgCOD/m3 d provided promising results. Removal values of CODtotal, BOD5 total, TOC, VFA, oil and grease were 83%, 84%, 81%, 93% and 81%, respectively. Based on the available data, the use of a two stage anaerobic system consisting of a classical UASB reactor followed by a hybrid UASB as a post-treatment step for catalytically oxidized OMW is recommended.  相似文献

Summary A stepped-loading start-up regime utilising variable organic influent concentrations in the range 1650–11600 mgCOD1–1 was applied to an anaerobic fluidised bed bioreactor at 37°C. The reactor was sensitive to variable influent COD concentrations, but the stepped-loading aided rapid recovery from transient organic loading shocks. Variable effluent COD levels were produced but a COD removal efficiency of 76% was obtained at a final HRT of 0.5 d and an organic loading rate of 5.3 kg COD m–3 d–1.  相似文献
