Growth of body height and weight and skeletal maturation are discussed, based on 49 male and 61 female Hottentot children aged 3 to 17 years from Warmbad, Namibia (South West Africa) and 124 boys and 113 girls aged 1 to 21 years of related populations, the Rehoboth Basters of Namibia and Cape Coloreds from Cape Town, South Africa. The related populations are taller and heavier than the Hottentots, and have almost the same body height as American blacks and whites at least after the age of 18 years. In the Hottentots and Rehoboth Basters, the mean TW2 skeletal age is always less than the British standard by one or two years in both sexes. In general, the Rehoboth Basters have a skeletal age that is intermediate between Hottentot and British children. In both Hottentots and Rehoboth Basters, the increase in body height shows a linear relation to the skeletal age, and the regression curves are almost parallel in both sexes. The differences in body height and weight between the Hottentots and Rehoboth Basters become greater after the skeletal ages of 15 years for boys and 13 years for girls.  相似文献

Three different strains, homozygous for a radiation induced structural chromosome mutation (T), exhibiting negative hererosis, were tested for their ability to displace the standard (wild-type) karyotype from experimental populations. The experimental populations were initiated by mixing fertilized females of both a T strain and the standard strain at different ratios. Two of the T strains showed the ability to displace the standard karyotype if the initial frequency of the T karyotype was at least 0.65. The additional release of T males into the experimental population accelerated considerably the process of displacement of the standard karyotype, especially if the initial T karyotype frequency was 0.65.A computer model for simulating the process of population displacement in Tetranychus urticae was developed. The model accounts for variation in developmental time and for the age dependency of variables related to fitness. The simulations showed a good correlation with the experimental results. A system analysis on the sensitivity of the model output to varying different population parameters demonstrated that especially the relative number of males produced by a T strain and the female developmental rate were of significant importance to the population displacement ability of a T strain. The negative influence of genetic markers on general fitness and various aspects of practical application of the method are discussed.  相似文献

Chromosome analysis using G-banding was carried out on cells from 65 males and 102 females of all ages from a random sample of the population. The frequency of aneuploid cells showed a significant increase with age in both sexes, and in females the increase in hypodiploidy and hyperdiploidy was more marked than in males, and involved a high proportion of cells that had lost or gained an X chromosome, 45,X cells being much more common than 47,XXX cells. In females, the occurrence of a "fragment" of an X chromosome also correlated with increasing age, and this "fragment" appears to be an X chromosome that has simply divided prematurely at the centromere. The effects of time in culture and of repeating cultures of blood samples from the same individual on proportions of abnormal cells of various types were also investigated, and the results are discussed in the light of findings from several other "ageing surveys".  相似文献

This paper reports results of the first cytogenetic study of parthenogenetic psyllids, carried out on an asexual population of the holarctic species Cacopsylla myrtilli W. Wagner from northeast Finland. Preparations of mature eggs extracted from females revealed 39 univalent chromosomes in prophase and metaphase cells. Hence, female meiosis is of apomictic type and replaced by a modified mitosis. The karyotype consists of 3n = 39 (36 + XXX). Clearly, the population is triploid, the haploid number being n = 12 + X as characteristic of the genus Cacopsylla as a whole. As typical for Psylloidea, the chromosomes are holokinetic, only slightly varying in size and without any visible markers, rendering impossible the precise identification of triplets of homologous chromosomes in the triploid complement. The distribution of bisexual and parthenogenetic populations of C. myrtilli throughout the world is briefly given, and a possible origin of the triploid parthenogenetic population is discussed.  相似文献

Age-related increases in the incidence of vaginal cornification were associated with increases in the reproductive success of female gray-tailed voles previously isolated from males. The pregnancy rate of females first paired with males at 30-50 days of age was significantly lower than that of females first paired at 90-120 or 150-200 days of age. The improvement was due to increases in propensities to display receptive behaviours and decreases in the incidence of sterile matings. Although plasma oestrogen concentrations increased with age and were higher in receptive than unreceptive females, plasma oestrogen values alone did not account completely for differences in receptive behaviours amongst females of different ages. Females ovariectomized at 30-50 days of age rarely displayed receptive behaviours when treated with large doses of oestradiol benzoate, whereas nearly all females similarly treated were receptive if ovariectomies were performed between 150 and 200 days of age. The receptivity rate of females ovariectomized between 90 and 150 days was intermediate between the rates of the other two groups.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE--To determine the incidence of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus up to the age of 21 in a geographically defined population in England with independent validation of completeness of case ascertainment. DESIGN--Prospective registration of newly diagnosed cases supplemented by centralised hospital discharge records and death certificates. Validation of ascertainment from general practitioners. SETTING--Oxford Regional Health Authority area (population 2.4 million). PATIENTS--All patients with insulin dependent diabetes diagnosed below age 21 during 1985-6 and resident in the region at the time of diagnosis. INTERVENTIONS--None. END POINT--Validation of a method of case ascertainment for assessing temporal variation in incidence of insulin dependent diabetes. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS--The overall yearly incidence of newly diagnosed insulin dependent diabetes mellitus in people under 21 was 15.6 cases/100,000 (95% confidence interval 13.6 to 17.6). Among males the incidence was 16.8 cases (14.0 to 19.7)/100,000 and among females 14.3 cases (11.6 to 17.1)/100,000. The highest incidence, in the 10-14 year age group, was 26.4 (20.9 to 31.8) new cases/100,000 population yearly. Case ascertainment was greater than 95%. CONCLUSIONS--The incidence of insulin dependent diabetes in England is considerably higher than reported from large scale studies. It is consistent with described patterns of geographical variation. The figures provide a baseline for assessing temporal change.  相似文献

The research was aimed to elaborate a method for selection of male plants (XY, YY) and female ones (XX) as well as for identification of supermale genotypes (YY) among male phenotypes. The population obtained by self-pollination of andromonoecious plants was analysed. In order to identify the bands differentiating the male from the female genotypes, Bulk Segregant Analysis (BSA) was carried out. Primers identified by BSA analysis were used for RAPD amplification on the template of the male and female individuals. Among the products obtained by the use of primer OPB-20, some bands were linked with sex. A band of about 700 bp was found in all female plants, and in 4 phenotypically male specimens. In the male plants, the band showed a much lower intensity, compared with the female specimens. It seems that this fragment can be linked to the X chromosome in the investigated specimens. In the female specimens with XX karyotype, template duplication occurs and hence the band intensity is twice as high as in the XY karyotype. Three male plants did not include the OPB-20-700 fragment so they could potentially have the supermale (YY) karyotype. If the obtained marker proved its usefulness for identification of supermale plants, it could become a valuable tool facilitating breeding work.  相似文献

The seaweed fly, Coelopa frigida, exhibits LMSP. A large chromosomal inversion system affects many traits including egg-to-adult viability via heterosis. Consequently, there is also considerable potential for cryptic female mate choice to operate on the basis of sperm karyotype. Here, we investigated the effect of time interval and chromosomal inversion karyotype on postcopulatory sexual selection. Homokaryotypic females were mated with a male of the same and a male of the opposite homokaryotype. The order of the matings was varied so cryptic female mate choice could operate either in concert or antagonistically with LMSP. LMSP was found when there was a 24 h time interval between matings, irrespective of the order in which the males were mated. However, when the males were mated in quick succession the order of mating was important. When LMSP and cryptic female mate choice work in concert a high level of LMSP was found. However, when the male of opposite homokaryotype mated first, then first male sperm precedence was observed. This suggests that polyandrous females might be able to bias paternity but only when matings occur in quick succession. Consequently, population density is likely to affect the operation of postcopulatory sexual selection.  相似文献

Social behaviour was proposed as a density-dependent intrinsic mechanism that could regulate an animal population by affecting reproduction and dispersal. Populations of the polygynous yellow-bellied marmot (Marmota flaviventris) fluctuate widely from year to year primarily driven by the number of weaned young. The temporal variation in projected population growth rate was driven mainly by changes in the age of first reproduction and fertility, which are affected by reproductive suppression. Dispersal is unrelated to population density, or the presence of the father; hence, neither of these limits population growth or acts as an intrinsic mechanism of population regulation; overall, intrinsic regulation seems unlikely. Sociality affects the likelihood of reproduction in that the annual probability of reproducing and the lifetime number of offspring are decreased by the number of older females and by the number of same-aged females present, but are increased by the number of younger adult females present. Recruitment of a yearling female is most likely when her mother is present; recruitment of philopatric females is much more important than immigration for increasing the number of adult female residents. Predation and overwinter mortality are the major factors limiting the number of resident adults. Social behaviour is not directed towards population regulation, but is best interpreted as functioning to maximize direct fitness.  相似文献

Potamotrygonidae is a representative family of South American freshwater elasmobranchs. Cytogenetic studies were performed in a Potamotrygon species from the middle Negro River, Amazonas, Brazil, here named as Potamotrygon sp. C. Mitotic and meiotic chromosomes were analyzed using conventional staining techniques, C-banding, and detection of the nucleolus organizing regions (NOR) with Silver nitrate (Ag-NOR). The diploid number was distinct between sexes, with males having 2n = 67 chromosomes, karyotype formula 19m + 8sm + 10st + 30a, and fundamental number (FN) = 104, and females having 2n = 68 chromosomes, karyotype formula 20m + 8sm + 10st + 30a, and FN = 106. A large chromosome, corresponding to pair number two in the female karyotype, was missing in the male complement. Male meiotic cells had 33 bivalents plus a large univalent chromosome in metaphase I, and n = 33 and n = 34 chromosomes in metaphase II. These characteristics are consistent with a sex chromosome system of the XX/XO type. Several Ag-NOR sites were identified in both male and female karyotypes. Positive C-banding was located only in the centromeric regions of the chromosomes. This sex chromosome system, which rarely occurs in fish, is now being described for the first time among the freshwater rays of the Amazon basin.  相似文献

The wood lemming displays certain peculiar features: (1) The sex ratio shows a prevalence of females (FRANK, 1966; KALELA and OKSALA, 1966), and some females produce only female offspring (KALELA and OKSALA, 1966). (2) In a considerable proportion (in the present material, slightly less than half) of the females, an XY chromosome complement is found in the somatic tissues, but the Y is absent in the germ line of those studied (Fredga et al., 1976). Therefore, (3) a mechanism of double nondisjunction in early fetal life of XY females has to be postulated, which replaces the Y in the germ line by duplication of the X. It is assumed (4) that the X of XY females bears a sex-reversal factor that affects the male determining action of the Y (Fredga et al., 1977). There is (5) a strong presumption that in most cases the XY females are those that produce daughters only, but (6) a few exceptions may occur (FRANK, unpublished observations), suggesting that the regulation according to assumption 3 (perhaps also to 4) is incomplete in XY females. In the present report, four females are described with a 31,XO karyotype, two females with 33,XYY or 32,XY/33,XYY, respectively, two males with a 33,XXY, and one male with a 32,XX/33,XXY karyotype, as observed in a consecutive series of 502 wood lemmings. The incidence of sex-chromosome anomalies in liveborn and adult animals was 2.3%; the overall incidence, including embryos, was 1.79%. Neither the somatic XO constitution nor the existence of an extra Y in females precludes fertility. However, the XXY condition in the male results in sterility. There is certain evidence that an instability of the proposed mechanism for double mitotic nondisjunction of the sex chromosomes in oogonia accounts for the high rate of sex-chromosome aberrations in wood lemmings, at least when the mother is XY.  相似文献

In an attempt to relate karyotype evolution to clinical and hematological data serial chromosomal analyses were performed in 31 patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), both in chronic and acute phases. Our results in Philadelphia chromosome (Ph1)-positive CML are in line with karyotype profiles described in the literature. In addition, we report on chromosomal findings in 4 cases of Ph1-negative disease, one presenting with an iso17q chromosome in the positive CML. The same chromosomal abnormality was observed in a small population of Ph1-negative cells present in one of two patients with mixed Ph1-positive/Ph1-negative CML. The first case of a female patient with the loss of a sex chromosome in Ph1-positive cells is reported. Two patients with unusually long and mild chronic phases despite the presence of trisomy 8 in their karyotypes are described. Our findings suggest that the order of appearance of additional chromosomal changes of CML is of prognostic significance for the progression and the clinical picture of the disease.  相似文献

Previous work has shown that captive female cowbirds, Molothrus ater, can influence the outcome of male song development by affecting retention or deletion of song elements and by stimulating improvization. Here we looked for evidence of female influence during the process of learning, as males progress from subsong to plastic song to stereotyped song. In a longitudinal study, we measured the rate and timing of vocal development in captive, juvenile male brown-headed cowbirds, M. a. artemisiae. Half the young males were housed with female cowbirds from their own population (South Dakota: SD) and half with female cowbirds from a M. a. ater population (Indiana: IN). Both populations of females prefer local songs and differ in the time of breeding, with SD females breeding 2 weeks later than IN females. The results showed significant effects of female presence on the age at which males advanced through stages of vocal development: the SD males with SD females, as opposed to SD males with IN females, developed stereotyped song earlier, reduced motor practise earlier, and produced more effective playback songs. Longitudinal observations of social interactions showed that the two groups of females reliably differed in social responses to males. Degree of social proximity of females to males in the winter predicted song maturity, rate of rehearsal and song potency. The karyotype of the giant beetle Dynastes hercules hercules is composed of only 16 autosomes and large sex chromosomes. Meiotic studies in the males showed that a large part of the sex chromosomes undergo synapsis at pachynema similarly to autosomes, demonstrating that both derived from an autosome-gonosome translocation. Therefore, karyotype formula is 18,neoXY. The heterochromatisation of the neoX short arm at pachynema indicates that it corresponds to the ancestral X. It carries the nucleolar organizer region (NOR) in its proximal part, which is undercondensed, especially in male mitotic and meiotic cells. In female mitotic cells, both NOR staining and undercondensation were more difficult to observe in the neoX short arms. In somatic interphase nuclei, NOR expression strongly varies with the sex. Two separated compact groups of silver dots were observed in female nuclei, while a single dispersed and large group of silver deposit exists in the males. Both the lower condensation and the higher NOR expression of the single neoX of the males, compared to each of the two neoXs of the females, is interpreted to be a consequence of dosage compensation, a mechanism not yet described in Coleoptera. In mammals as well as in Coleoptera, the carriers of gonosome-autosome translocations not exhibiting deleterious phenotypes show constitutive heterochromatin at the autosome-gonosome junction. Thus, heterochromatin may play an important universal role by clearly separating chromosome segments with different regulations of gene expression, such as inactivation or dosage compensation of the X chromosome on the one side and a conventional autosomal structure on the other side.  相似文献

Under sexual selection, genitalia typically undergo rapid and divergent evolution across species and competition between the sexes over control of fertilisation may drive the co-evolution of male and female sexual traits. Sexual selection can, therefore, influence genitalia in three fundamental but non-mutually exclusive ways: (1) cryptic female choice, (2) sperm competition and (3) sexual conflict. Golden moles (Chrysochloridae) are a highly specialised family endemic to sub-Saharan Africa. We examined intra-specific genital allometry of both male and female subterranean Hottentot golden moles (Amblysomus hottentotus). Consistent with previous studies in mammals, we found positive allometry and a high coefficient of variation (CV) for male genitalia. The results for female reproductive tract length of A. hottentotus contrast with the findings of previous studies as isometry was recorded. Based on the allometric relationships of both males and females presented here, we suggest that the males do not sequester females and that in the absence of visual cues the female may use penis size as an indicator of phenotypic quality.  相似文献

The karyotypes of seven Ilybius species are described and illustrated. All except I. wasastjernae have a basic karyotype of 34 autosomes plus sex chromosomes which are X0 ( male symbol ), XX ( female symbol ), with the X chromosome among the largest in the nucleus. This karyotype appears to be the norm for Ilybius and supports the transfer of the species concerned from Agabus to Ilybius. I. wasastjernae has 36 autosomes and the X chromosome is the smallest in the nucleus and its karyotype is unlike any other known karyotype in either Ilybius or Agabus. In most of the species studied no intraspecific variation has been detected. Exceptions are I. chalconatus, where there is one inversion polymorphism in one of the autosomes, and I. montanus whose autosome number has been found to vary from 29 to 34. Such variation is highly unusual among Coleoptera. The variation results from fusion-fission polymorphisms involving three different pairs of autosomes. In each case the fusions may be homozygous, heterozygous or absent. All populations investigated were polymorphic for some of the fusions, but only one (La Salceda, Spain) included individuals lacking all fusions. The frequencies of fused and unfused chromosomes were analysed in three English populations. In only one case was there a departure from the values expected from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and this population also showed a significant difference from the other two. Meiosis in males heterozygous for fusions involves the production of trivalents in first division, but results in the production of abundant sperm, with no evidence of chromosomal abnormalities in second metaphase, or of degenerating cells as a result of failed meiosis. The three fusions sites are consistent in all the populations studied, and it is concluded that these fusions represent unique historical events rather than current chromosomal instability.  相似文献

In the majority of socially monogamous bird species, females have offspring sired by males other than their social mate as the result of extra-pair copulations. While it is widely recognised that there is considerable variation in the frequency of extra-pair paternity between species, between populations of a species and between individuals of a population, determinants of this variation are surprisingly difficult to establish. With respect to individual variation within a population, it is an important step to test for male and female correlates of cuckoldry to better understand the patterns as well as the adaptive significance of extra-pair mating behaviour. Here, we analysed patterns of extra-pair paternity in relation to male age, female age and their interaction in the great tit Parus major, a socially monogamous passerine with a moderate frequency of extra-pair paternity. Based on a large sample of 316 genotyped first broods from five successive years, we failed to demonstrate interaction effects of male and female age on both the proportion of extra-pair offspring and the likelihood that at least one extra-pair offspring is present within a brood. However, both the proportion of extra-pair offspring and the likelihood of paternity loss were higher for yearling as compared to older males, while this was not the case for yearling vs. older females. Furthermore, the proportion of extra-pair offspring within a brood decreased with increasing age of the attending male in within-individual analyses. We found a comparable effect also for attending females in within-individual analyses, but only when excluding two individuals with 100% extra-pair paternity. A female (extra-pair) mating preference for older males and/or a limited ability of yearling males to prevent cuckoldry in their broods could explain these age-related patterns of paternity loss. Effect sizes, however, were not particularly large and substantial residual variation within age categories suggests the importance of further yet unidentified determinants of variation in paternity loss in the study population.  相似文献

To test hypotheses involving reproduction and demographics, the sex of individuals must be established, but many species of Cetacea are not obviously dimorphic. In the North Atlantic right whale, Eubalaena glacialis , population, the sex of 61 males and 55 females had been determined previously by observation of the urogenital region, and the sex of 43 more females had been inferred from repeated sightings with a calf. To confirm the sex of some of these animals and to identify the sex of mote animals, genomic DNA was isolated from skin samples of 95 individual right whales (54 from among those described above and 41 additional recognizable individuals). The DNA was surveyed using the human Y-chromosome probe pDP1007. With Eco RI-digested DNA, a clear, sex-discriminating banding pattern was apparent. This method verified the sex of all 54 animals whose sex was previously known or inferred and identified the sex of an additional 41 recognizable individuals. A total of 89 male and 111 female right whales was identified in the population. The most unbiased estimate of sex ratio available is the 36 male and 34 female calves identified by genital morphology and DNA techniques. The sex ratio of this sample does not differ significantly from unity (P = 0.811). Only 38% (58/152) of the females in the North Atlantic population are known to have been reproductively successful compared with 54% in the population of right whales in the western South Atlantic. The population growth rate reported for the North Atlantic population is only 33% of that reported for right whales in the South Atlantic. Thirteen adult North Atlantic females have been identified that have not been known to calve during the past 11 yr. These data suggest that the absence of measurable recovery may be due to a combination of fewer actively reproducing females and lower reproductive rates of some females.  相似文献
