Prevalence of agglutinating antibodies against<Emphasis Type="Italic"> Listeria monocytogenes</Emphasis> in chicks of the white stork (<Emphasis Type="Italic">Ciconia ciconia</Emphasis> Linnaeus, 1758) in Poland

In 2002 and 2003, blood samples from white stork (Ciconia ciconia) chicks were examined for the presence of antibodies against Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria antibodies were detected in 121 (59%) of 205 chick samples. The probability of Listeria antibodies being present increased with chick age; chicks detected with Listeria antibodies were in better condition than those without the bacterium.

在长岭草原共采到中气门螨9科15属20种。优势种为胸前下盾螨Hypoaspis praesternalis Willmann,1949,螨数和分布生境数最多,常见种有10种,稀有种为9种。在调查的20个生境中,羊草杂类草生境螨数和螨种数最多,碱茅生境没有采到螨,其余18个生境都采到不同数量的螨。     

Long-term satellite tracking of white stork ( Ciconia ciconia) migration: constancy versus variability

During satellite-tracking investigations of 140 white storks (Ciconia ciconia), one individual, the long-term world record holder among birds, was followed along 12 migratory journeys over a period of 10 years. This long-term study confirms what previous several-year tracking studies of white storks had indicated: there can be great variability from year to year in the choice of winter quarters as well as in the routes and times of migration, intermediate destinations and stop-over periods, but constancy of winter quarters and migration routes is also possible. The variability may well be caused by external factors, of which food supply is probably predominant.Communicated by F. Bairlein     

Breeding dispersal directions in the white stork (Ciconia ciconia) are affected by spring migration routes

We examined breeding dispersal directions in the white stork (Ciconia ciconia), a migratory bird breeding in large parts of Europe. We asked whether and how the direction of the major spring/autumn migration route (from south-east to north-west and vice versa) affects breeding dispersal directions. Breeding dispersal directions were clearly nonrandomly distributed and were influenced by the major spring migration direction, leading to a bias toward south-eastward and north-westward breeding dispersal.

The camerobiid mites (Acari, Camerobiidae) of Turkey

Three new species of Neophyllobius viz. N. demirsoyi, N. yunusi, N. bolvadinensis and male, protonymph and larvae of N. lachishensis Bolland, 1998 from Turkey are described and illustrated. Neophyllobius lachishensis is reported from Turkey for the first time.

Aerial dispersal of European red mites (Acari: Tetranychidae) in commercial apple orchards

Aerial dispersal of European red mite, Panonychus ulmi (Koch), in commercial apple orchards was estimated by trapping windborne mites. Studies were conducted at four orchards in eastern New York during 1989 and 1990 and at three orchards in western New York during 1989. In each orchard mites were trapped in three locations; the interior of the orchard, at the border of the orchard and in a field or woodlot beyond the orchard. Large numbers of mites were captured, even when the numbers of mites on apple foliage were well below levels where mite injury to leaves was visible (less than five per leaf). The log numbers of mites trapped were linearly related to the log density of mites on leaves and this relationship was consistent for each year and region the study was conducted. The trap captures among the three locations in and outside an orchard were highly correlated. The implications these findings may have on metapopulation dynamics and resistance to acaricide dynamics are discussed.

Melatonin and thyroxine response to pollution in white stork nestlings (Ciconia ciconia): aspects of rhythmicity and age

There is growing evidence that ubiquitous environmental contaminants may interfere with vertebrate endocrine systems. The selected endocrine biomarkers are used to indicate the condition of free-ranging populations of wildlife, including avian species. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of environment quality on serum thyroxine (T4) and melatonin (Mel) in white stork nestlings (Ciconia ciconia) living in different locations: small villages in natural areas surrounded by forests and crop fields, near the city and near the copper smelter. We extended our analyses to examine the hormones' day-night changes in conjunction with chicks' age. Total serum T4 and Mel was measured by RIA. T4 level, as a decisive measure of thyroid hormone productivity, was significantly lower in the nestlings exposed to pollutants from the copper smelter. Mel, as a well-known scavenger of free radicals, was elevated in the nestlings in the area near the copper smelter. This study indicates that alteration in T4 and Mel levels could be a useful marker of exposure of nestling wild storks to different toxic substances in field studies. Mel is postulated to be a susceptible defensive molecule as a protective mechanism for organisms.
