The rate of behavioural innovation, such as opportunistic feeding innovation, may facilitate adaptation to novel environments. Because parasites may affect how their hosts adopt novel means of resource acquisition, or because opportunistic behaviours may involve the risk of being exposed to a large parasite fauna, we hypothesize an evolutionary link between the rate of feeding innovations and parasitism. We investigated the phylogenetic relationship between relative frequency of feeding innovations (adjusted for research effort and population size) and relative size of immune defense organs (as a relative measure of parasite-mediated selection) and the prevalence of blood parasites in birds. Using generalized least squares models, we found that species with relatively large bursa of Fabricius, thymus, and spleen had higher rates of feeding innovations than species with small immune defense organs. Similarly, there was a positive interspecific association between feeding innovation and haematozoa prevalence. These relationships were not confounded by migration, relative brain size, geographical distribution, and male plumage brightness. Analyses of causality relying on evolutionary modelling of discrete variables and path analysis suggest that increasing rate of feeding innovation may place species under intense selection due to parasitism. Therefore, behavioural adaptation by feeding innovation seems to have consequences for the coevolutionary arm race between parasites and hosts. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 90 , 441–455. 相似文献

Synopsis Seven species of rock-frequenting cichlids, endemic to Lake Malawi, formed feeding-schools. Petrotilapia genalutea was the nuclear species comprising 92% of the school members (n = 2690 individuals from 50 schools). Fifty-eight per cent
of all schools encountered consisted only of P. genalutea. School size ranged from 10 to 300 members (x = 81 ± 74 SD, median = 62). Schooling behaviour was facultative. Ninety-seven
per cent of the feeding sites used by the schools occurred within the territories of highly aggressive, territorial species.
These sites support considerably greater standing crops of algae, the food of the schooling species, than undefended sites.
Individuals of schooling species were unable to gain access to the aggresively defended areas unless they joined schools. 相似文献

There is scant information available on the ecomorphology of Antarctic fishes, and especially on their feeding capabilities. We measured interspecific variation in mechanical advantage (MA), force-producing capability, and suction index for the jaws of the five dominant taxa of high-Antarctic fishes: the nototheniid Trematomus bernacchii; the zoarcids Pachycara brachycephalum, Lycodichthys dearborni, and Ophthalmolycus amberensis; and the liparid Paraliparis devriesi. Analysis of variance indicated significant differences in jaw metrics, and ordinations of morphological traits identified three loosely defined groups reflecting their family-level taxonomy. Principal component analyses showed distinct segregation between the nototheniid and the liparid, indicating that they are at the extremes of the feeding performance continuum. The zoarcids fell in the middle, suggesting that they utilize a combination of feeding modes to capture prey. The liparid had the lowest MA and bite force, but a large epaxialis implied a ram-suction-feeding mode. The large adductor mandibulae in the zoarcids P. brachycephalum and L. dearborni suggest that they are capable of grasping mobile prey and manipulating sedentary, hard-shelled macroinvertebrates. The zoarcids had a smaller epaxialis than the liparid and may not be as efficient as suction-feeders. Values for mechanical advantage ratios and suction indices in Antarctic fishes were within the range known for non-Antarctic fishes. The five Antarctic species do not possess dentition specialized for durophagous feeding; however, the high mechanical advantage ratio in the nototheniid and, to a lesser extent, in the zoarcids, suggests that durophagy may be possible. 相似文献

Several studies on cognition, molecular phylogenetics and taxonomic diversity independently suggest that Darwin''s finches are part of a larger clade of speciose, flexible birds, the family Thraupidae, a member of the New World nine-primaried oscine superfamily Emberizoidea. Here, we first present a new, previously unpublished, dataset of feeding innovations covering the Neotropical region and compare the stem clades of Darwin''s finches to other neotropical clades at the levels of the subfamily, family and superfamily/order. Both in terms of raw frequency as well as rates corrected for research effort and phylogeny, the family Thraupidae and superfamily Emberizoidea show high levels of innovation, supporting the idea that adaptive radiations are favoured when the ancestral stem species were flexible. Second, we discuss examples of innovation and problem-solving in two opportunistic and tame Emberizoid species, the Barbados bullfinch Loxigilla barbadensis and the Carib grackle Quiscalus lugubris fortirostris in Barbados. We review studies on these two species and argue that a comparison of L. barbadensis with its closest, but very shy and conservative local relative, the black-faced grassquit Tiaris bicolor, might provide key insights into the evolutionary divergence of cognition. 相似文献

Two seagrass grazing fishes, Meuschenia freycineti and Meuschenia trachylepis (Monacanthidae), were offered three choices of Posidonia australis seagrass blades of different epiphyte coverage and leaf age to determine whether these fishes exhibit a preference for epiphyte-covered seagrass blades. Both species removed significantly more biomass of the epiphyte-covered blades than of the two other blade types in multiple-choice tests. This clear preference for epiphyte-covered seagrass blades results in a preferred removal of older blades within the seagrass shoot of P. australis .

Functional responses describing how foraging rates change with respect to resource density are central to our understanding of interspecific interactions. Competitive interactions are an important determinant of foraging rates; however, the relationship between the exploitation and interference components of competition has received little empirical or theoretical consideration. Moreover, little is known about the relationship between aggressive behavioural interactions and interference competition. Using a natural gradient of consumer and resource densities, we empirically examine how aggressiveness relates to consumer–consumer encounter rates and foraging for four species of Chaetodon reef fish spanning a range of dietary niche breadths. The probability of aggression was most strongly associated with both total consumer and resource densities. In contrast, total encounter rates were best predicted by conspecific consumer density, and were highest for the most specialised consumer (Chaetodon trifascialis), not the most aggressive (Chaetodon baronessa). The most specialised consumer, not the most aggressive, also exhibited the largest reduction in foraging rates with increasing consumer density. Our results support the idea of a positive link between the exploitation and interference components of competition for the most specialised consumer. Moreover, our results caution against inferring the presence of ecological interactions (competition) from observations of behaviour (aggression and agonism) alone. 相似文献

Five species of eleotrid fishes ( Gobiomorus dormitor, Dormitator maculatus, Eleotris amblyopsis, Eleotris pisonis and Leptophilypnus fluviatilis ) are known from the Tortuguero estuary of Costa Rica. One, E. amblyopsis , appears tightly linked to the presence of mats of macrophytes and two others, E. pisonis and D. maculatus , are largely limited to this habitat in the lower estuary. All three of these species feed on hyacinth roots. Despite certain food and habitat specializations among the forms, there is evidence of competition and predation among four species. Individuals of breeding size have never been found in the system for D. maculatus and L. fluviatilis . Alternative means of establishing and maintaining eleotrid populations are suggested. 相似文献

While the role of host preference in ecological speciation has been investigated extensively in terrestrial systems, very little is known in marine environments. Host preference combined with mate choice on the preferred host can lead to population subdivision and adaptation leading to host shifts. We use a phylogenetic approach based on two mitochondrial genetic markers to disentangle the taxonomic status and to investigate the role of host specificity in the speciation of the nudibranch genus Phestilla (Gastropoda, Opisthobranchia) from Guam, Palau and Hawaii. Species of the genus Phestilla complete their life cycle almost entirely on their specific host coral (species of Porites, Goniopora and Tubastrea). They reproduce on their host coral and their planktonic larvae require a host-specific chemical cue to metamorphose and settle onto their host. The phylogenetic trees of the combined cytochrome oxidase I and ribosomal 16S gene sequences clarify the relationship among species of Phestilla identifying most of the nominal species as monophyletic clades. We found a possible case of host shift from Porites to Goniopora and Tubastrea in sympatric Phestilla spp. This represents one of the first documented cases of host shift as a mechanism underlying speciation in a marine invertebrate. Furthermore, we found highly divergent clades within Phestilla sp. 1 and Phestilla minor (8.1-11.1%), suggesting cryptic speciation. The presence of a strong phylogenetic signal for the coral host confirms that the tight link between species of Phestilla and their host coral probably played an important role in speciation within this genus. 相似文献

The feeding habits of four species of mesopelagic fishes from northern Chile are described: Triphoturus mexicanus, Diogenichtys atlanticus, Vinciguerria lucetia and Cyclothone acclinidens. Samples were captured in September 1988 between 18 degrees 25' and 19 degrees 09'S in the South West Pacific. The quantitative and qualitative analyses of the stomach content showed that the species have a zooplanktophagous opportunistic behavior, mainly predating on Crustaceans, especially on Copepods. The evaluation of the trophic spectrum and diversity of T. mexicanus and C. acclinidens suggests that these are nictoepipelagic species, while D. atlanticus and V. lucetia would be typical mesopelagic. 相似文献

The impact of human activity is evident in the depletion of fish populations worldwide. This being the case, there is an urgent need to discover the true biodiversity of the world before the loss rate exceeds its limits. Because the feeding ecology of a species is thoroughly linked to its population dynamics, knowledge of the feeding ecology contributes to the understanding of such subjects as resource partitioning, habitat preferences, prey selection, predation, evolution, competition and energy transfer within and between ecosystems. Such ecological information is of great value when developing conservation strategies and is, therefore, a key element in the protection of species and ecosystems. Our paper reviews the geographic and/or biogeographic regions where the majority of studies concerning the feeding ecology of fish have been conducted, with the goal of identifying regions and/or environments in need of further attention. In addition, we identify which journals published more papers regarding the subject. Our analysis was conducted by assessing studies indexed on the ISI Web of Science database. We detected a lack of data concerning several aspects of the feeding of fish, such as: threatened species; freshwater habitats especially within the Neotropical, Ethiopian and Oriental realms; species rich developing countries; and, when considering marine fish, the Eastern Indo-Pacific region. Considering the calculated weight for each journal, Ecology of Freshwater Fish, Neotropical Ichthyology and Environmental Biology of Fishes were the most important ones. If we ignore these gaps in our knowledge we run the risk of losing a huge amount of information without knowing it ever existed, especially in the fast changing world we face today. 相似文献

Feeding complementarity versus redundancy among herbivorous fishes on a Caribbean reef 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Herbivory is an important driver of community structure on coral reefs. Adequate understanding of herbivory will mandate better
knowledge of how specific herbivores impact reef communities and the redundancy versus complementarity of their ecological
roles. We used algal communities generated by herbivore manipulations to assess such roles among Caribbean herbivorous fishes.
We created large enclosures on a 16- to 18-m-deep reef to create treatments grazed for 10 months by: (1) only Sparisoma aurofrenatum, (2) only Acanthurus bahianus, (3) no large herbivorous fishes, or (4) natural densities of all reef fishes. After 10 months, we removed cages and filmed
how free-ranging reef fishes fed among these treatments that differed in algal community structure. In general, Acanthurus spp. and Scarus spp. rapidly grazed exclosure and Sparisoma-only treatments, while Sparisoma spp. preferentially grazed exclosure and Acanthurus-only treatments. These patterns suggest complementarity between Sparisoma spp. and both Acanthurus spp. and Scarus spp. but redundancy between Acanthurus spp. and Scarus spp. Despite these generalities, there was also within-genera variance in response to the different treatments. For example,
large Scarus spp., such as Scarus guacamaia, fed more similarly to Sparisoma spp., particularly Sparisoma viride, than to other Scarus spp. Moreover, the three common Sparisoma species differed considerably in the macroalgae to which they exhibited positive or negative relationships. Thus, herbivorous
reef fishes vary considerably in their response to different algal communities and exhibit complex patterns of compensatory
feeding and functional redundancy that are poorly predicted by taxonomy alone. 相似文献

The food spectra, trophic statuses, and feeding interrelations of three most abundant benthic carnivorous fish species inhabiting
the Shelikhov Bay—the Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus, the great sculpin Myoxocephalus polyacanthocephalus, and the Okhotsk sculpin M. ochotensis—are considered based on materials collected during the complex survey of the RV Professor Kaganovsky of the TINRO-Center, in September 2004. It was found that these species were facultative predators with wide food spectra.
The significance of prey objects in the diet of the Okhotsk sculpin was as follows: crustaceans, fish, and mollusks. Great
sculpin and Pacific cod preyed mostly on fish, then on crustaceans, and mollusks. Pacific cod ate equal proportions of fish
and decapods. All the species had age-related variability of diet. The potential competition of great sculpin and Okhotsk
sculpin for food was mitigated by the difference in the depths of their ranges, as well as by morphological (body size) and
behavioral peculiarities in the areas where their habitats overlapped, and in microecosystems. The most probable competition
was among Pacific cod 30–60 cm long and Okhotsk sculpin 20–50 cm in length, as well as among cod and great sculpins of all
sizes. 相似文献

Feeding of tropical freshwater fishes: seasonality in resource availability and resource use 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Food resources in the environment and in the diets of small fish inhabiting two water bodies in a tropical savanna were studied during both wet and dry seasons. During the wet season (high water, abundant food) most fish species in both habitats fed predominantly on vegetation-dwelling invertebrates. Most fish species switched to alternative foods (algae and detritus) following the drastic decline in invertebrate food available towards the end of the dry season. In one habitat, this change in diet was accompanied by an increase in the volume of food intake. In the second habitat, only two larger species foraged intensively, while smaller species showed low food intake or almost ceased feeding. These differences may be explained by the high risk of predation for small fish in the second habitat. Dietary overlaps among fish species were high at the end of the dry season and moderate in the wet season. However, critical analysis of such factors as food abundance, the size and number of shared prey, and diet breadth showed that all significant overlaps were ecologically unimportant i.e. there was only weak competition for food. 相似文献

Synopsis Factors that structure preferences among food corals were examined for the obligate coral-feeding butterflyfishChaetodon multicinctus. In the field, fish show a simple repetitious pattern of foraging composed of (1) pre-encounter search for coral colonies,
and (2) post-encounter inspection/orientation, bite, and consumption of polyps. Rose coral,Pocillopora meandrina, and the massive coral,Porites lobata, were taken in higher proportions than their percentage substrate cover, while finger coral,Porites compressa, was taken in lower proportion. Paired presentations of coral colonies in the lab gave similar results:Poc. meandrina was preferred overPor. lobata which was preferred overPor. compressa. Poc. meandrina tissue had the highest energy content, lowest handling time, and highest profitability. Energy content did not differ amongPorites tissues, but handling time was greater and more inspective eye movements were made while foraging on the branched finger coral,Por. compressa. Experimental manipulation of coral colony morphology indicate preferences amongPorites are most likely structured by handling costs. Predictions of a simple prey-choice foraging model are supported in theC. multicinctus system if abundance of the branched coralPor. compressa is estimated as that available to fishes rather than percentage substrate cover. The relative size and abundance of stinging
nematocysts are also consistent with observed foraging patterns in the field, but await immunological confirmation. Coral-feeding
butterflyfishes offer unique opportunities to test models of foraging ecology in reef fishes, and the direction of future
studies is suggested. 相似文献

Synopsis In this study the diets of five species of bottom-feeding fishes (Prochilodus lineatus, Steindachnerina insculpta, Loricariichthys platymetopon, Trachydoras paraguayensis and Iheringichthys labrosus) were analyzed. Samples were taken in the High Paraná River basin and its floodplain from August 1987 to July 1988 and in February, August and September 1991. The results demonstrated that P. lineatus and S. insculpta were ileophagous, L. platymetopon was detritivorous and I. labrosus and T. paraguayensis were benthophagous. The feeding activity was higher during the flood period for P. lineatus and in dry season for T. paraguayensis. P. lineatus and S. insculpta fed mainly during the day, while I. labrosus and T. paraguayensis during the day and dusk, respectively. 相似文献

Analysis of the feeding habits and trophic interrelationships between nine important fish species including Ambassis interruptus, Liza vaigiensis, Escualosa thoracata, Leiognathus decorus, Stolephorus indicus, Gerres oyena, Arius sagor, Sillago sihama and Ambassis kopsii utilizing an impacted coastal habitat revealed that the diets of most species underwent marked changes with ontogeny. Most of them had moderate food intake with fullness value ranging from 2.50–4.88. Variations of diet breadth and vacuity index were observed between species and size. New settlers of most species fed mainly on microcrustaceans especially calanoid copepods, before shifting to other food items. A multivariate analysis demonstrated that diet composition of the nine fish species differed from each other. However, significant overlaps between some fish species, including A. kopsii with G. oyena, E. thoracata with L. decorus, A. sagor with S. sihama and G. oyena with L. decorus, were detected by a Morisita-Horn index. This indicates that food partitioning with a slight competition among species occurs in this heavily impacted ecosystem. 相似文献

Feeding in extinct jawless heterostracan fishes and testing scenarios of early vertebrate evolution. 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Mark A Purnell 《Proceedings. Biological sciences / The Royal Society》2002,269(1486):83-88
How long-extinct jawless fishes fed is poorly understood, yet interpretations of feeding are an important component of many hypotheses concerning the origin and early evolution of vertebrates. Heterostracans were the most diverse clade of armoured jawless vertebrates (stem gnathostomes), and the structure of the mouth and its use in feeding are the subjects of long-standing and heated controversy. I present here evidence that heterostracan feeding structures exhibit recurrent patterns of in vivo wear, are covered internally by microscopic oral denticles, and that the mouth may have been less flexible than has been thought. These data, particularly the absence of wear at the tips of oral plates, and the evidence that the mouth was lined with delicate outwardly directed denticles, effectively falsify all but one hypothesis of feeding in heterostracans: heterostracans were microphagous suspension feeders. This has a direct bearing on hypotheses that address ecological aspects of early vertebrate diversity and evolution, contradicting the widespread view that the pattern of early vertebrate evolution reflects a long-term trend towards increasingly active and predatory habits. 相似文献
